Nata Talikishvili, one of the funny, gorgeous sex-workers Mate and Merab encounter after the club, has, since the film, been working for NGOs supporting trans rights. Recently she was attacked and hit in the head near her home. The government's queerphobic rhetoric and anti-LGBT+ laws have made bigots braver, and for all the platitudes about 'we don't care what you do at home just don't do it in public', trans women sure do get attacked at home a lot. I think Nata was just pretty shaken up, no serious physical damage, but a lot of friends were really scared for her.

Today was the general election in Georgia. That fear might only get worse if Georgian Dream get away with hijacking the country like they're intending to. In the past week they've been buying new water cannon and arresting researchers at NGOs. They denied entry to the country to a reporter for the Kyiv Independent and they've said they'll lock up the opposition after they win. Their leader has given unhinged interviews ranting about the 'global war party' and spreading falsehoods about human rights in western Europe (i.e. claiming in spain they make children attend orgies at pride, and that parents force their children to medically transition. You know the old lies the bigots love to trot out.). They're preying on Georgia's fear of Russia to bully and con people into voting their way at the expense of the population's vast preference for closer ties to the EU, and they have been torpedoing diplomatic relations with the west left, right, and centre

I don't exactly have recommendations other than to look up English language reporting (OC Media, JamNews, Radio Liberty) and make people aware of this and make Georgian queers aware you're on their side. You can donate to OC Media's fund to support independent journalism and you can donate to NGOs like Tbilisi Pride, the Shame Movement, Human Rights House Tbilisi etc.

And keep Georgia in your hearts, things are not going to be easy, however the election pans out.
