Hi I’m sorry for all my anti-Jurdan tantrums lately… but I’m not anti-Jurdan more anti-Nicasia yet I can’t make peace with the fact that Cardan still cares about Nicasia despite the fact she tortured Jude. So I have to ask, do you think Nicasia and Cardan are still friends despite the fact she tortured Jude?
to answer your main question: maybe not friends, per se, but i think there will always be an understanding between Cardan and Nicasia. they are each other's longest standing allies/accomplices, that kind of bond isn't one broken lightly.
but i want to talk about the rest of your ask because there's a lot to unpack there.
you seem to be hung up on this "Nicasia tortured Jude" narrative. and while that may be your reading of it, i don't really see it that way.
Orlagh was the one who kidnapped Jude. Orlagh was the one who held her captive. Orlagh was the one who gave her less than humane living conditions. she is the queen of the Undersea. if Jude had been meant to be treated with decency while there, she would have been under no one else's command than Orlagh's. instead, Jude stayed in a cold, dark unfurnished cell and drank sea water and was given very little food for weeks. because of Orlagh.
if you think Nicasia had any hand in Jude's treatment while she was kidnapped in the Undersea, if you think Nicasia is anything more than a pretty pawn to a cold and ruthless queen, i'm sorry but that is a plain misreading of the text.
anger at children who are literally trying to Figure It All Out, is often sorely misplaced in this series, and it breaks my heart that people wouldn't have a more nuanced understanding of their situations. we should be directing that anger at the people who are usually the ones directly responsible: the parents and guardians.
just to be clear, the only thing Nicasia did directly was punch Jude in the stomach once and take away her air bubble for five seconds. that doesn't exactly scream "torture". that was a brief altercation catalysed by anger, and perhaps also jealousy.
Nicasia thought Cardan, her ex-lover and longest known friend, was being romantically manipulated by Jude somehow. and though Jude wasn't manipulating Cardan's feelings for her, Nicasia was under that impression and was called to rock her shit for it. it's dramatic irony–quite a useful and entertaining literary device.
also, need i, for the millionth time, remind us all that Jude has done far worse than punch someone in the stomach.

i asked a friend who’s never read tfota to describe its characters
here’s how it went:
overall i think he did a pretty good job considering i haven’t actually blabbed about tfota too much to him. what do you think?
all artwork is by @phantomrin
JUDE
okay who do you think she is
cold blooded ruler of a kingdom forced into war by circumstances beyond their control if i had to guess
CARDAN
and him?
i’m getting loki vibes from that lad, a sort of anti-hero who gets into trouble and dabbles with villainy but at the end of the day he’s a good dude
TARYN
good-guy protagonist vibes from that one, relatively innocent at the beginning of the story but suffers some kind of loss prior to the climax that like, makes her both more cold AND more powerful/motivated
VIVI
getting bad guy vibes there. she looks like she uses her beauty to sabotage/manipulate for her own goals, and she doesn’t play by the rules. a formidable foe 100%
OAK
protagonist for sure. if it was a magic story, i’d say not a very powerful magician but one with a certain skill that would 100% help out the characters along the way. kind and innocent, from what i see here
MADOC
a bad guy, but not bad because he’s evil, bad cause he’s been through some stuff and that’s just how he’s had to be to survive. he looks like he’s in a powerful position, but again, i’m getting vibes like “he’s a surface bad guy, but not for reasons in his grasp of control
ORIANA
someone who knows too much. not really in the “good guy/bad guy” scheme, just kinda neutral. i have no doubt she’s incredibly powerful but for some reason or another chooses not to use her powers or to get involved with sides
LOCKE
wise, clever, good guy. has a knack for ingenuity, but is also sometimes dangerously arrogant. an asset
VALARIAN
i can’t read that face but that curved dagger screams “bad dude”
NICASIA
good guy, but not by a lot. she looks incredibly powerful, pretty much the opposite kingdom of the first gal you sent me. she looks like she’s helping the protagonists not because she likes them, but because there’s something in it for her. possible betrayal in the making? possible
BALEKIN
good guy for sure. seems like a tough guy but a nice guy at heart. plus emo so that’s some bonus points
DAIN
looks like this guy’s picture is hung in a palace somewhere to signify his heroism. good guy, at least on the surface, strong of mind either way. also, nice bird
THE BOMB
good guy, clever, inventor. the team engineer maybe? intelligent vibes. love the hair too!
THE ROACH
i sense military leadership in this lad, he’s been doing this forever. if you ever saw guardians of the galaxy, i’m getting yondu vibes from this guy. he’s a good guy, and if the rest of them are magic, he’s not. he’s just a normal guy. but he’s a normal guy with experience and genius strategy. and that’s what makes him so dangerous. he’s right on par with the others, even without magic
THE GHOST
2. okay you know gale from the hunger games? yeah, that’s pretty much that lad there. a stealth agent by trade and a hunter by passion, he can invade enemy lines with ease. although not a people person, coupled with an espionage expert their squad can infiltrate enemy lines with ease
#how’d he do?#the queen of nothing#qon#tcp#the cruel prince#twk#the wicked king#tqon#tfota#jurdan#jude#jude duarte x cardan greenbriar#jude duarte#cardan#cardan greenbriar#incorrect tfota#incorrect tcp#knife wife jude#cardan is soft for jude#jude greenbriar#jude x cardan

Ghost in the Stone chapters 25 & 26
Click to see the rest of the snark & image descriptions
Chapter 25
Caina nodded, retrieved her throwing knives from the courtyard, and headed for the Gallery of the Well, Sicarion and Corvalis following.
Chapter 25 summary: After the three of them get away from the room, Sicarion says that it's probably safe to open their eyes. Caina seems to think that they might be able to get some help, but Sicarion bursts that bubble. Says that the leaders left for a better place to hide from potential assassin attacks, while all of the slaves fled. It's only just them in the place now.
The ground has been shaking throughout the past two chapters as the guy summons the earth spirit. But now, the ground bursts open and a huge spirit comes out; Sicarion says that it's only just a minor earth spirit. Corvalis attacks with his sword, but the thing is made out of stone, and a steel sword does nothing. They're forced to use magic and ghostsilver.
However, Caina realizes that the thing doesn't notice her since she's wearing the anti-magic cloak. She distracts it from Corvalis, and then leads it from the area, across a bridge. The bridge collapses under the weight, which takes the spirit down into the water, where it “drowns” because it is rock.
They take a moment to breathe before they head out to stop the guy from summoning an even bigger, even more powerful spirit.
Chapter 26
“Well, you did help us against the Kindred,” said Caina, and she grinned.
The Ghosts paid their debts.
And so did Caina.
Chapter 26 summary: The three of them come upon Ranarius as he's almost finished summoning the spirit. Sicarion disables his anti-steel wards, and they try to attack him like that.
Ranarius asks for Sicarion to help him encase Caina in stone for the next couple of centuries so that they can be free. But the difference between Sicarion and Ranarius is that Sicarion likes working for Jadriga.
They continue fighting. At some point, Ranarius shoots both Caina and Corvalis with lightning; Covalis goes down and doesn't get up.
But eventually, Caina manages to break the slave bracelet on Ranarius's wrist. Nicasia shows up, toys with the idiot a little bit, before she turns him to stone. And then because he would eventually be released from stone, they push him down into the seemingly bottomless well.
As thanks for having freed her, Nicasia goes with Caina and Corvalis (still alive after being struck by lightning), where she un-petrifies Claudia.

Nicasia's karma was having Cardan–her ex-lover, longtime friend, and arguably the person she cared about most in all of Elfhame–reject her in favour of someone she can't stand. if you think that's not enough, justice does not always work out how we want it to.
what's more, i wonder what you would classify as "torture" and "enslavement". from where i'm standing, Nicasia has done nothing of the sort.
i think it would be beneficial for you to do some reading of other people's interpretations with at least a small effort at understanding them. here are some of mine:
this post
this post
and the above post, of course
and i'm sure there are others by other people floating around out there.
if you've read these clearly analysed posts with actual evidence from the text to support the arguments, rather than subjective personal beliefs, and you are still intent on hating Nicasia, i don't know what else to tell you. you are not going to convince me she is BadTM and i'm clearly incapable of swaying your opinion.
but this is very evidently a pro-Nicasia post. and i would appreciate it if you kept anti-Nicasia sentiments away from it.
Look people are absolutely entitled to their own opinions but I love it when they back up not liking this character for x reasons or being a bad person. Like ?? Jude murdered an immortal fae at the tender age of 18 ??? I mean valerian totally deserved it but just think. In tCP when Jude found out about Taryn lying to her about Locke she made Taryn fight her??? She kidnapped the future high king, enslaved him, poisoned Madoc and fought him, and god knows how much else. Listen we all love Jude but no one can deny that she lacks more than a few morals. I mean from book one she dedicated herself to being worse than the Fae bc she couldn't be better than them. And I also feel like people forget that Nicasia answered Jude's call in QoN to help Cardan when he was in his snake era. No one in this series is a good person and they've all murdered or have been associated with a murder. Except heather and oak, we stan them and their non-existing body count.
tbh, nonnie, you are so right and i hope you say it more.
is it the SJM effect? is it the twitterification of fandom spaces? unclear, but frankly, it bores me.
there's an important discrepancy between "books are for everyone!" and "every book is for everyone" that i think often goes neglected in fandom spaces. while i believe books are for everyone, not every book is for everyone. and just as you must curate your own social media experience by being mindful of your boundaries/who you allow into your space, i'd implore people to use that same discretion in curating their bookshelves.
if you don't like fucked up little guys doing fucked up little things in fucked up little worlds, this series is probably not going to be right for you. as nonnie says, everyone here is terrible.
and we love it.
if you don't like a character because you don't vibe with them, that's fine. but what we should discontinue post-haste, recall like a defective Honda Civic, is this rise in hating characters because they don't act in alignment with your personal morals, while your own fav is sitting on dozens of atrocities.
Jude may well be justified in a few of her kills, but it is incumbent upon me to remind everyone that, not only did she kill Valerian–one of the Gentry with a significant enough title so as to be closely associated with a prince of Faerie–, she also killed a spy. not because that spy had done anything. but because someone told her to. HOURS AFTER SHE KILLED VALERIAN!
and nonnie is absolutely right. Jude tells us herself that she is going to be worse than the fae. "If I cannot be better than them, I will become so much worse." isn't that literally one of the most renowned lines of the series? yet, the same people who scorn minor characters that dare to oppose Jude, conveniently also forget how awful Jude is herself.
and then we have to begin to wonder if it is really about morals at all, and rather more about projecting yourself onto a character while being allowed to exist in wilful ignorance of their flaws, so you don't have to see something ugly in yourself.
Jude knows she is a terrible person. at least give her the credit she deserves.
