The amount of people acting like Ethan was some sort of “one that got away” for Devi is concerning. Or worst, one she should’ve fixed.

Ethan was hot. He served his propose which was entertain Devi and get her off Ben. That was pretty much it. It’s okay. He was not doing anything for Devi outside of her sexual life. Stop projecting on Devi a situation that wasn’t going to last or was meaningful for either of them.

Devi wanted to go to college. Ethan was a liability. A dead beat boy without a plan and Devi is not going to start this new chapter of her life babysitting some dude that writers “bitches” on a teacher’s car because he got mad. I can assure you, Devi is not crying over him in college wishing she had “given him a chance”. He is going to be remembered as a bad boy she dated once in high school.

Devi got over her horny haze because as she said, it’s not worth risking her college life over. And Ethan pretty sure found himself another girl to hookup with after Devi dumped him. End of story. Stop trying to make it more than it is.

And funny enough, I saw a TikTok complaining he wasn’t there for the rest of the show or at Nirmala’s wedding. Why would he be on the same table as Devi’s close friends? Be serious. Let hot guys be a plot device and move on.

brutally honest opinion on devi/paxton

SO MUCH WASTED POTENTIAL

Devi and Paxton were two flawed teenagers who supported, respected, challenged and cheered each other on. They were always there for each other, especially when no one else was. Paxton accepted all parts of Devi.

But the show squandered all their romantic potential because they can't be friends and date?? Even though a healthy romantic relationship is built on friendship? The show butchered Daxton for what??? Devi to end up with a white boy who disrespects her???

In s1, Paxton's biggest quality was accountability. He made amends apologised and did better. He was arguably the most emotionally intelligent character of the show.

In s2 he was a different person. He couldn't speak, was a stereotypical jock, never apologised for anything. Also that "reveal" where Paxton was ashamed of Devi when they were together in ep 1... utter garbage. It made no sense and contradicted Paxton being publicly involved with Devi in ep 1.

Still hate Devi thanking Paxton for being a dream in s3. I know this stupid Paxton-hating fandom thought that everything that happened between Daxton until now was fake and rooted in "fantasy." It undermined Daxton's development since s1. As soon as Devi started talking to Paxton, he was no longer an empty cipher she could project on.

Don't get me started on s4 and Paxton returning to high school. Why not have Paxton return after taking a sabbatical or he's on holidays??? Uni is hard. You have so many more responsibilities and priorities. Students tend to care less about rigid social hierarchies, like the ones in high school. But Paxton went through so much to get there. He lost his swimming scholarship, accepted being tutored by Devi (the girl who ridiculed him and in his mind made him loose his scholarship), went the extra mile etc. Paxton's priority was his grades, never his reputation. So Paxton dropping out after 2 weeks??? Bullshit.

Some of y'all give Margot way too much credit. Yes, she got Ben to respect her and to value art (and art helped him cope with his stress), and to not worry so much about his grades. But I honestly feel like she was only able to do it because he had already grown quite a bit by the time she met him. He was already more open to respecting other people's intelligence thanks to Fabiola and Paxton, and he was already a little more relaxed because of his conversation with Paxton, and most importantly, his conversation with his dad. Margot isn't some super girl who got Ben to calm down in a way that no other girl could achieve. And she also wasn't the first non-Devi person to get him to respect her intelligence.

Also, for the people who claim that Devi was more vulnerable with Paxton than she was with Ben - Oh like the time she moved into Paxton's house after she had that huge argument with her mother in season 1? Oh wait, that's not what happened, is it? Devi almost always tried her best to downplay her emotions with Paxton. For example, as soon as she says that she feels like everyone in her life is done with her, she asks him to forget she said that, and that it was weird. And his response is to kiss her. How is that a sign of great emotional intelligence? I think Paxton had some really wise moments, but I honestly don't think he's so much more mature than Ben or Devi (as some people claim). They had their fair share of wise moments too. And all three of them had their own flaws. Paxton is just less obviously off-putting than Ben and Devi. I mean I'm not put off by them, but I'm talking about the people who might dislike their "mean" or "crazy" sides.

• YES! I keep seeing all these 14 year olds being so upset that Devi didn’t end up with Ethan because “she could fix him” and he “really liked her”. Devi shouldn’t be in the business of fixing ANYONE!!!! (Also note to all the Ethan Stan’s: never be in a relationship where you feel like you have to fix someone, that never works). Ethan did not “really like her”, he just thought she was hot (which is super fair tbh, I do not fault him for that). I can guarantee you that as soon as Devi dumped him, he skipped off to hook up with someone else.

His future includes nothing. Like that boy has zero ambition and probably disappeared because he got expelled.

Sometimes I still remember the insanity that was a fic writer writing a fic about Paxton breaking his arm and having to try hard in school before NHIE season 2 came out. And then I remember that I wrote a fic about Ben and Trent getting high together and the exact scenario happened in season 4.

Crazy to me that Mindy Kaling (massively well-known celebrity) clearly chose to steal fan ideas for her shitty show rather than coming up with her own original ideas. How tf did that show get 4 seasons.

I wish we could find more funny, lesser-known women of colour and have them create and write original shows. Give new PoC a chance to shine and make a name for themselves.

Also if DBDA, a very original and well-written show with good characters and acting, is canceled in favor of unfunny shows by unoriginal writers and mediocre characters and acting. I will riot.

Girl the nhie writers did paxton and aneesa so dirty. Like boy Aneesa had like two seconds of screen time and dont even get me started on Paxton.

Like yeah he had an ending, not like Aneesa but they just got bored?? They made him fall in love with some random teacher, not even go to college? the whole being a teacher thing is nice, I do like that. But the fact that Devi and Paxton weren't endgame and BEN GROSS WAS?? like its in the name, 'gross'. Plus he's like 5 centimeters.

The enemies to lovers trope is adorable but what did Ben even do? Ignore her and blame Margot.

Paxton literally made her heal from losing her dad. he was like always there for her. Its literally right person, wrong time except is right person, wrong writer.

I totally get being upset over your ship not getting the endgame. The universe knows I've been there lots of times and it's no fun, lol. But to reduce a whole, complex show with well-handled subject matters so important such as grief (and different coping mechanisms), friendship, teenage insecurities, family and coming-of-age processes to such a small thing is kinda sad, unfair, and frankly a bit pathetic.

Degrading and trashing a good show just because its writers didn't make your romantic fantasy canon is on another level of childish. It's fiction guys, grow up a little and move on.

also like, they act as if jaren isn't attractive which confuses me so much? i may not be into men as a whole but even i can see that he's also a conventionally attractive guy. hot, cute, sexy, whatever you wanna say - he is all of those things! and so is darren! i don't care if you're trying to "defend your ship" or whatever (a ship that has effectively sunk at least as of 3x10 and, if we're being honest, earlier than that), you leave people's appearances out of it lol.

i think d*xton was cute, when they were together. i think they were a sweet short-term high school relationship. i think devi needed to explore that relationship with him in order to let herself fully move past that fantasy she had. i don't hate the ship itself - i just really very strongly dislike a majority of its shippers, for many many many reasons, the ben and jaren bashing just being one of them

Haven't seen the later episodes but as far as I know, he never apologised for being a huge bigot in s1. Still can't believe we got a whole episode dedicated to his white boy sob story about him being alone. Be nice and you'll get friends, it's realllly not hard.

Ben can do whatever consequence-free whereas Devi can't. He was never held accountable for being a dick??? He was terrible to and for Devi for years until he liked her romantically (and even then he was a jerk).

He didn't have "redemption arc," he wants to get in Devi's pants so all their hostile history is suddenly... gone? And he does the bare minimum, if that, and Devi's supposed to settle for that??? This is the boy who pressured Devi into altering her body to be forgiven??? And we're meant to root for them??? What kind of white nonsense??

Ben & Devi is one most badly executed "enemies-to-lovers" trope I've seen. The only reason this happened is because of Mindy's obsession with white bullies.
