backstory.

he thought from a young age that his name would dictate his fate. his brothers, emilio (to strive, excel, rival), luka (bringer of light), milo (dear/beloved), or his sister, narcissa (daffodil). yet him? vatavios held no meaning. his mother was often too sad to tell him what she had in mind when he was gifted that name. aurelian (gold) -- perhaps for his hair, though he heard it likened to fallen snow. elrich (ever-powerful). Was his name meant to be a blessing? a promise? a memory carried forth? or was he named without thought. he was not the family eldest/first son; he was not clever and the one in reserve, he was not sickly, or the little girl. I am repulsed, shaken, and deeply offended. But, I am also, once again motivated in the battle to fight the fight I though my grandparents already did for me.

My grandparents are Holocaust survivors and heroes of the war. The vast majority of their family and friends were killed in the Holocaust in the hands of the Nazis and the Europeans who supported the Nazis.

My grandparents fought for survival and for the survival of truly anyone they could help. And, that continued for the majority of their lives, as they lived with the ever constant effort to help the Jewish people survive and thrive.

But, today, I read the news…

Swastikas were pasted throughout the Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial in Idaho. Flyers and stickers were plastered throughout the memorial with swastikas and the threatening words “we are everywhere.”

This is the only memorial dedicated to Anne Frank in the United States. Anne Frank personifies so much for Jewish people, for those struggling with victimhood and marginalization, and for understanding of what Jews suffered during the Holocaust and the horrid Anti-Semitism Jews faced in Europe.

Anne was one of the over Six Million Jews tortured and murdered by the Nazis and Nazi sympathizers during the Holocaust. Her story became almost canonized for so many of us, because of her father, who survived the Holocaust, published her diary. The Diary of Anne Frank gave us a perspective of victimhood from a child’s perspective, which is painfully even more poignant due to her hopeful and wise-beyond-her-years perspective on life.

The Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial was built not only for Anne, and not only for Jewish victims of the Holocaust and those of us descended from Holocaust survivors. It was built as a reflection of the Jewish experience. What we Jews do is use our experiences, turning our victimhood narrative into one of resilience, claiming “Never Again” and “Always Remember.” And, we do all of this as we help repair the world, helping others who are victimized and marginalized. We do all of this as we are always seen at the forefront of every social justice and human rights movement.

This memorial to Anne Frank is the only one in the United States. This place exemplifies the concepts of what our people faced during the Holocaust and throughout our much too long and continued history facing Anti-Jewish hate speech and violence. A statue at the memorial, named “Spiral of Injustice” features the words “language,” “avoidance,” “discrimination,” “violence,” and “persecution.” This artwork symbolizes the surrounded and bound by those words. And, even on this statue the hateful anti-Jewish neo-Nazis plastered their vandalizing swastikas and flyers.

This is a memorial that was built as a physical statement of our Jewish values and shared values of standing up to confront hate.

But, hate….was emboldened once again. And, hate….found its way into this specific place to reveal itself and mark its territory as everywhere. Just as the words of the hateful vandalism state, “we are everywhere.”

These words are meant to strike fear into our hearts. And, they do.

So, what do I say? What do I do?

I speak up, I speak out, and I put my words into action. I must take action to fight hate, and especially to end Jew hatred. It is my responsibility and duty, in honor of my grandparents who survived the horrors of the Holocaust, and in honor of my other grandparents who managed to escape. I do this because all of my grandparents lost the majority of their family and friends. I do this in honor and in memory of the Jews whose lives were brutally destroyed and shattered by those who hate us. I will not stay silent. I will not shudder in fear. I will fight hate.

There has never been a Jewish civil rights in the United States until now. This year a new movement has been formed, End Jew Hatred, which is mobilizing Jewish organizations and activists to fight for positive change. I am proud to support this movement, which aims to eradicate Jew hatred in this generation. If we are determined and work together, Jew hating can be a thing of the past.

This recent act of hatred targeting Jews is not a rare event. Instead of my listing the terror of violent attacks over the past year, take a look at just some of the incidents in the past couple months.

December 7, 2020, in Boise, Idaho:

Vandalism and propaganda stickers that included a swastika and the message “We are everywhere” at the Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial.

December 6, 2020, in Westminster, Colorado:

14 First, a neo-Nazi group, distributed propaganda that read “I’m dreaming of a White Christmas” and “A message to white men and women: Diversity is a complete failure and destroying our race.” The propaganda included an anti-Jewish imagery of a swastikas and anti-immigrant messaging.

December 5, 2020, in St. Paul, Minnesota:

The words “Free Palestine,” “Fuck Zionism” and “Solidarity STP — Palestine” were spray-painted on the pavement outside a synagogue.

December 5, 2020, in Colorado Springs, Colorado:

Various property at Roswell Park was vandalized with swastikas and antisemitic, anti-Black, and anti-LGBTQ graffiti that read “Die nig — -s,” “I hate fags,” and “Die Jew.”

Nate/Leia are not even CLOSE to Jackie/Hyde. For starters, the former were always friends whereas the latter initially HATED each other and grew closer. If anything, Gwen/Nikki are Jackie/Hyde. Frenemies/enemies to lovers, Nikki/Jackie being in unhealthy relationships with guys who don’t treat them right, and that annoyance from Gwen/Hyde. Not even gonna repeat myself so here.

If anyone is Nate/Leia, it’s Hyde/Donna. Both dynamics are plot devices that make the male character look bad (Donna clearly doesn’t want him/Nate is dating Nikki). Also Leia/Donna have deep and meaningful relationships with Jay/Eric who are Nate/Hyde’s best friends.

Not people saying that Nate and Leia are going to be the new Hyde and Jackie

Oh god, I hope not. I’m sorry but Leia and Nate just feel so forced to me. Like with Jackie and Hyde there were little hints from the end of s1 onwards, until they finally got together. And then with Nate and Leia, there was just one almost kiss, and then there’s feelings there that weren’t before. And I’m not even sure that they spent that much time together during the summer either. So they’re just a no for me.

When readers know a character before you do

I do a lot of planning in my writing, like... a LOT.

But sometimes both my readers and characters surprise me and I enjoy looking back on both.

Awhile back I created a character called 'Skana' intending her to be a rival to Neia, the main character. But neither character would cooperate, their chemistry was to strong, to powerful, I just couldn't make Skana behave as I wanted her to.

Readers who commented, remarked on the pair as potential romantic partners, and it was only then that I recognized her as such, and once I did so, it couldn't have flowed more smoothly. The pair bonded and remained united right to the very end with such devotion and vigor that one anti-gay bigot actually changed his mind on the whole issue of gay marriage and was like, 'Yeah, this is what love looks like, how can I oppose that?'

Sometimes readers gain insights into your work that even the author might not catch, and a character might be far different than the way you first envisioned them. When that happens... I say embrace it. :)

It just makes no sense, imo, for Nate and Leia to get together after admitting that it was a heat of the moment thing and that they just wanted to be with Nikki and Jay.

I can maybe understand the idea of Nate and Leia just lying in the premiere about nothing being there, but after seeing how much Leia loves Jay and Nate being so focused on Nikki (I say focused b/c I think he’s actually falling out of love with her but anyways) and how genuine it is, I can’t really see the idea that they’re both lying to themselves.

I'll admit tho, when I saw that scene of Nate and Leia admitting that this wasn’t what they wanted, it hurt. But I don’t think it was random. It has been a whole year since they almost kissed. A lot can happen.

Canon Neia, as far as S1-2, is literally Hyde/Donna except w/o the sexual assault.

I think Neia is a pretty ship with great chemistry and I love what they could’ve been pre season two.

I also enjoy Niknate as a high school relationship despite not liking some of the aspects of them after the third episode of season one.

But in the long run and in canon part two-present? I don’t want either pairing to happen.

Neia admitted in the premiere that it wasn’t what they wanted, and basically that they used each other for comfort, so if they go there again, it would make no sense. Plus Jeia grew so much this season, and it would be a shame to jeopardize it all.

Niknate, on the other hand, would be full on character regression. They’re very incompatible and have different wants for their future. I fully believe that in order to get back together, they'd have to water themselves down and it'd stunt their growths in some ways. Even if I didn’t ship Gwikki, I still wouldn’t want Niknate as a couple again. I do feel like they’d be good as fwb again and then they’d end it b/c it isn’t what they want anymore. Or they just be friends and nothing more.

In conclusion: N*knate and N*ia both don’t work in the long run imo, but I know that writers are probably gonna go for them anyways. But I have hope that both will just remain friends and nothing more.
