That brings up an interesting point. Since you seen to be a canon girlie, do you think/feel that Hermione DOES become Minister?
What do you make of Harry being Head of Magical Law Enforcement?
thank you for this question anon! i do think it's very plausible hermione becomes minister of magic. i think it's equally plausible that harry becomes head of magical law enforcement. mostly because, well:
basically: i think both characters' career trajectories are in keeping with the politics of the series as a whole - eg. the goodies are all liberal, pro-state, non-revolutionary moderates who support a gradualist reformist agenda rather than a radical re-imagining of societal organisation. i also think both career options track with who each character is in canon (or rather, who the teenage versions of these characters might become as adults). and i think most of the reasons people are disappointed by either idea, and especially by harry coming 'a cop' then rising up the ranks to run law enforcement, is because they are putting their own more radical ambitions around social justice onto characters that would be poor vehicles for them.
on hermione - i don't know how many people have huge issue with the idea of hermione as minister of magic. i imagine the complaints with this idea come from people who a) like hermione and think hermione's politics as a teenager - identifying systemic injustice and labour exploitation of a subject people - jar with the idea of her settling within a political system that upholds and enforces that structure and others like it, or b) people don't like hermione as much and who think she would be too unpopular to get elected. to the former group, i'd trot out the arguments made far better than people other than me: that hermione's support for the house elves mostly boils down to a bit of a saviour complex and 'be nicer to your slaves', which is not especially radical position, and also point out the ministry's institutional culture seems to reward high-achieving technocrats with establishment credentials (or at least, prior records of academic and professional achievement), and i could see hermione riding that train straight to the top, especially on wave of post-war reformism with diminishing anti-muggleborn prejudice. (the wizarding world also loves a good (and bad) law and is extremely vigilant in enforcing them to a fault. hermione jean granger absolutely loves a rule. it's a match-made in heaven. it is - i fear - giving keir starmer).
to the second point, as i talked a bit about here, the wizarding world does not seem to be a democracy. so hermione wouldn't even need to be especially popular to get the top job. i personally love the idea of hermione quietly parking her commitments to representative democracy to get a bit of good labour legislation passed, or even thinking about wizarding democracy in victorian terms (as long as you're representing what you think the enlightened citizenry want, you're gucci). i mean honestly, what do the masses know! ignore em, queen. they're all kind of pureblood racists anyway!
on harry: i have a feeling it's harry's trajectory that most pisses people off. and i absolutely get it! people hate cops, and harry appears to become one, after spending a lot of the series raging against how shit senior leadership at the ministry of magic tend to be. while i do see the argument that teenage harry has strong criticisms of the ministry for its officials' self-interest, corruption and lack of accountability for their many miscarriages of justice, the truth is that a) harry never really associates being an auror with representing the ministry of magic as an institution, that b) he thinks of lots of characters who work in and around the ministry of magic, including in law enforcement, as agents of good (arthur weasley, kingsley, tonks, mad-eye, amelia bones) and c) harry at no point shows himself interested in thinking about ideology, about political systems, or about a more developed worldview beyond a deep sense of right and wrong and a need for justice. i think harry would like being head of magical law enforcement much less than hermione would like being minister, and i could see him finding the job enormously frustrating both for how much politicking it likely requires and for how little field action it would require. but i don't think that means it's out of character for him to rise up the ranks in pursuit of a more effective justice system and eventually take the top job as a means to an end.
the only other thing i'll say is that i do think there is something a bit culturally specific about imagining these two characters we think of as morally good actors taking up roles within the state to try to work for what they feel to be positive reform and progressive causes. the state appears quite neutrally in the hp series: it's a tool to be picked up and used to affect political change. this reflects its author's worldview, the political moment in which it was written (eg. under blair's new labour), and a longstanding dimension of real-life centre-left social democratic british politics usually expressed, at various times and to varying extents, by the political programme of the labour party throughout its history (to say nothing of a wider european context). it's not an inherently problematic political worldview (it is a core social democratic and socialist principle; it is also my own view of the state...), though ofc it can become so in the wrong hands. for instance, it's a consistent through-line in jkr's political evolution and a staple of her practically single-issue dangerous anti-trans politics even now - terf politics is a lot about wielding the state to remove legal protections from trans people, stop them from accessing health care etc. but the idea of the big state and of laws and government as a positive interventionist tool does colour hp as a text in lots of ways and is reflected in the worldview of many of its characters with which the reader is supposed to side. and i don't think we should overlook that.
conversely, hp is also a series devoid of political movements, and certainly of a meaningful far-left ideology or political sphere. and that's important to remember too if we're interested in canon coherence: hp is a liberal text in that it seemed plausible for its author to vacate a great deal of politics from her world-building. and i think that is, regretfully, worth remembering when we're claiming hermione should have been a trade union agitator or harry should have been an acab abolitionist organiser or whatever.
#meta#basically#hermione 🤝 kamala 🤝 keir = social outsiders using a legal career as a springboard to careers on the political centre/centre-left#harry just loves a pretty black and white version of justice and also was just thinking of the pension#politics#wizarding world#hp politics

Hello! I hope you’re enjoying your well-deserved break 🙂 I am reading through the anti-Theo tag but I have a more specific ask that I haven’t found yet - do you know if any fics where Theo is an antagonist, but not as a death eater/blood purist - rather, just a rival/enemy of Draco’s. Can have any relationship to Hermione - rival, enemy, friend, suitor, whatever.
Thanks in advance 💕
Chasing Forever - floorcoaster - M, one-shot - After a shocking turn of events, Hermione worries her marriage isn’t as strong as she thought.
Redemption by anondracomalfoy - M, 23 Chapters - Hermione works at St. Mungos, and the fourth floor has recently made a discovery and inadvertently retrieved her biggest regret-her lost and seemingly Obliviated husband, Draco Malfoy. Draco is forced to return to her, and strange things begin to occur.
Voyeuristic Malady By: bentnotbroken1 - M, one-shot - Theodore Nott has it all; a lucrative business, a small fortune, respect and any women he could want, but it’s not enough. There’s still a hole that needs to be filled, a need to be met. Something important is missing. Or should he say, someone? (Death by Quill submission) Dramione and one sided Theomione
Ordinary People by inadaze22 - M, 19 Chapters - “Let me be clear about something tonight, Granger. You’re the only woman I’ve ever wanted…It’s always been you.” Draco steps in the fireplace, drops the floo powder, and disappears in a burst of green flames. Being re-written.
Memories of the Past by mayawrites95 - T, 35 chapters - After tragedy strikes, Hermione finds out a secret about her past, changing everything she knew as truth. Enter Draco Malfoy who is brought in by the Minister of Magic on a case as a crisis dangles over their heads. However little does she know that Draco holds his own secrets which could change her life in ways she never knew were possible.

Trailblazing & Stargazing - Chapter 17
Hermione made herself some coffee and waited on the sofa. When the time came, she took the broken mirror out of her pocket and unfolded the napkin, the moment it activated she touched it and she felt like she was being pulled inside a tornado. She landed roughly at the Portkey Arrivals gate at the Kingsford Smith International Airport. She went through the Wizarding security checks and then she met Ron. “Hey, ‘Mione! How are you?” He hugged her tight. “Hello Ron! I’m a bit drowsy but I have a potion, give me a moment.” She took the anti-disconbobulating potion from her beaded bag and drank it in one single gulp. She felt better and mentally thanked Malfoy. “Look at you, Ron, all tanned! You look like an Aussie already!” “I must say, things are going really well for me here.” “I’m so happy for you! And thank you, for looking out for my parents.” “You know I always cared about them, that hasn’t changed.” “What did the healers say?” “I’m taking you there right now so you can talk to them directly.” He held out his arm, when she took it, he apparated them to the Ursula Southeil Hospital for Magical Maladies. They entered the hall and Ron purposefully strode towards the information desk. “Hey, Mate.” He said to the wizard on duty. “I have an appointment to see Healer Alinta Cavanaugh.” The wizard checked the parchment in front of him “Second floor, ambulatory number 24, turn right when you get to the second floor, fifth door on the left side.” “Thanks Mate.” As they climbed up the stairs, they met quite a few healers along the way. Unlike the healers at St. Mungo’s, who wore very unpractical robes, the healers here wore regular muggle scrubs in different colors. Hermione and Ron reached the ambulatory and knocked. The door opened and a witch about their age, with dark hair, dark eyes and traditional tattoos on her forehead and chin greeted them, she was wearing blue scrubs. “Hello Mr Weasley. You must be Minister Granger. I’ve read a lot about you.” “Hello Healer Cavanaugh. I sure hope your source material wasn’t the Daily Prophet or you’ll have a really poor opinion of me.” “Oh no, don’t worry. I hate the Prophet.” She gestured dismissively.

The interviewer- a Dramione fanfic
Chapter one!
Author’s note: This is seven years after the war. Hermione is working at the ministry of magic in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, in her case, the Anti-overthrow office which was established after the war to prevent the ministry from ever being overthrown again. Her job is to interview new businesses and make sure they aren’t planning anything against the ministry.
There are a lot of pictures too! But only of the rooms, outfits, and other random things. I’m going to let you imagine the people yourselves. (Because I hate it when people show me what they’re supposed to look like!)
Hermione is 24 and Draco is… 23? Look it up. My math ain’t mathing right now!
That’s all I have for now, so, enjoy!
September 21, 2005
Hermione’s house
Hermione woke up to the sound of her alarm clock ringing.
(Her bedroom)
She quickly turned it off, got up, and went to her kitchen. She had a nice house. A little big, but, whatever floats your boat.
(Her kitchen)
She quickly made some coffee and buttered some toast.
Once she finished, she washed her dishes and sat down on the couch to read. It was her day off so she decided to relax.
(Her living room!)
A few minutes later, there was a tap on her window. She looked up and saw an owl.
“Hello.” She said, opening the window for it.
It held out its leg for her to untie, took a treat from her, and left. Once she sat back down, she read the letter.
Dear Ms. Granger,
I just wanted to let you know that tomorrow when you come in don’t bother going to your office. I need you in my office because I have arranged a meeting with the owner of a new company and I need you to interview him. I will give you more details tomorrow.
Sincerely,
Kingsley Shacklebolt-
Minister of Magic
She reread the letter to make sure she understood it all and then put it down.
“I wonder what business it is.” She said to herself. And picked her book back up.
Draco’s house
Draco woke up to his alarm clock but turned it right back off. It was Saturday, he wasn’t getting up till he had to.
(His room!)
Once he finally got up, he flicked his wand to make up is bed, stumbled into the kitchen, and sat down.
(His kitchen!)
Even after an hour of extra sleep, he was still exhausted. Starting and running a business was harder than he thought. Once he ate breakfast (Ham and Eggs) he went into the living room.
(His living room!)
He sat down and picked up his coffee, thinking about random things. There was a peck at the window so Draco got up, already knowing it was an owl, and untied the letter. Opening it he read,
Dearest Draco,
Hello! I was just wondering if you would like to join me for lunch? Please respond!
Love,
Pansy
He rolled his eyes. He had been getting the same letter every Saturday since his father had passed. He had only accepted the first time because he thought it was just a friendly gesture. Turns out, she only wanted his money. So he had declined making up an excuse every time since then. But today he just wrote,
No.
And that was it. He was too exhausted to think of an excuse.
Hermione’s house
Hermione woke up with a jolt. Her stomach felt like it was burning.
“Gosh, I’m hungry!” She said to herself. She looked at the time, 1:30, and made some lunch. Once she finished, she decided to sit on her porch.
(Her porch!)
So she went outside and right as she was about to sit down she saw a package by her door. She went to pick it up wondering who would have sent her this. Opening it she saw a note that said,
Hey Hermione!
Sorry I didn’t send this by owl, it was too big! I hope you like it and Happy Birthday!
Love,
Ginny
She opened the box and found a beautiful red lace dress.
(The dress!)
She couldn’t help but gasp when she saw it. It was…Perfect! She couldn’t wait for an opportunity to wear it.
Draco’s house
Draco woke up to Blaise Zabini tapping his shoulder
“Hey mate, wake up!” He said.
Draco grunted and said,
“I regret giving you a key.”
“Whatever. C’mon, let’s go somewhere!”
“I’m to tired.”
“Aww! Come on! We can go to lunch… on me.”
Draco immediately got up saying.
“I’ll be ready in five.”
Blaise just laughed and sat down to wait.
Draco came back with a green sweater and jeans.
(His outfit!)
“Alright, where are we going?”
Ok! That was chapter one! Stay tuned to my page for more!

It's Just a Title.
“Well, well, well, if it isn’t our new Minister for Magic, Hermione Granger.” Rita’s voice was dripping with sarcasm.
“It’s just a title, Miss Skeeter.” Hermione rose from her seat, crossing her arms.
“It’s just a title, she says.” Rita quickly jotted it down.
Hermione rolled her eyes. “Is there a reason for you to be here?”
“Yes, Rita, what are you doing in my wife’s office?” Luna walked in behind Ginny. They stood next to Hermione in solidarity.
“Oh, do you need your wives to help you trade barbs with me?” Rita’s voice was still acidic.
Ginny snorted. “Honestly, Rita, you keep forgetting who captured you.” Ginny looked over to her wife, “Minister Granger, did you check to see if she has registered yet?”
“Stupefy!”
Ginny’s head whipped to Luna to see her wand out and pointed towards the door. “What?”
“She was trying to escape.” Luna spun her wand and put it away. “I am going to assume she hasn’t.”
Hermione grinned ferally as she walked over to her nemeses and leaned over her, “I have you now, Rita and I can see the headline title. “The Newly Elected Minister for Magic Squashes Her Bug.”
“HARRY?”
“Yes, Minister Granger?” Harry ran in. He looked down and started chuckling. “I’ll take care of this for you. I’ll make sure we put the anti-animagi chains on her.”
“Thank you, Head Auror Potter,” Hermione smirked as she watched Rita disappear.
“Thank you, ladies.” Hermione spun around and hugged them. “I’m hungry.”
“Let’s go, Minister Granger.” Ginny kissed her lips.
“Congratulations, Minister Granger. We love you.” Luna kissed her, too, before they left the new office.

My Dream-
Granger
A TV Series about Hermione Granger at
Clifden Institute of Magic
Because Witches & Wizards who want to specialize need to study for an additional 3-4 years of study, preferably at an Institute of Magic. Duh!
Background-
IMs (Institutes of Magic) came into formation around the year 800. There had always been specialized organizations/program/academies for high levels of Magic. They usually took less than a handful of students each year. Around 800AD the area now know as Nairobi, Kenya had more than 20 of these academies. They joined together and the first IM was founded. IMs were few and small for many years. In the 1800s they continued to grown in enrollment and prestige. This was continued into the 1900s when these IMs became funded by magical governments offering exceptional witches and Wizards the chance to study advanced magics for free. Although specialized academies still exist throughout the world, there are only 25 Official IMs Globally. Although there have been rumors for years about secret IMs for high level dangerous or experimental Magic, none have been confirmed.
Clifden IM , in County Leitrim Ireland, was founded in the year 1050 by Merlin and Morgana High Wizard and Witch of Camelot. The IM itself is invisible to muggles. Only once in the early 1800s did a muggle once view Clifden. He believed it to be the gateway to another universe or perhaps Heaven. He went insane looking for it and eventually recreated the castle from what he remembered . The real Clifden Institute is 1000 times larger and more grand than the muggle replica castle. It is said to be one of the most expansive and beautiful Magical institutes on earth. While it is far from being the oldest, it is considered an elite school competing with Bayou IM in New Orleans, Louisiana USA, Nairobi IM, and Scholomance IM in Transylvania, Romania. (Rumored to be run by the devil to ward off Muggle, but actually run by Magical Creatures -Vampires-Werewolves-Giants-etc who were originally not allowed in traditional IMs, and still face discrimination in employment, the school's speciality is The Dark Arts)
The Show-
Hermione is awarded a special entry into a top level DADA program due to her fighting Voldemort. It’s her secondary field. Her Primary study is Comparative Magical Politics & Wizarding Relations . Hermione is beginning to think about a career in government. Normally student decide these things their final year of Hogwarts, but Hermione missed that year due to her Horcrux search. After graduating in 1999, she continued onto Clifden Institute of Magic.
Ron mises her. He supports her though. Time are hard with the distance. He’s undergoing intense training with Harry and of focused on work, but misses her a lot. Jealousy may occurs and they may go their separate ways for a while, but they always come back to each other. (It’s a TV series, we need the Drama!!)
Hermione & friends dealing with their PTSD of being children of war.
Hermione & her BFFs Ginny, Kellah, Angie, Ali, and Chelsea (aka Chelsea Cho-Chang, because “Cho” liked Quidditch but didn’t loved it and wants to leave her jock friends attitude, and childhood nickname in the past) hanging out, practicing magic on levels they didn’t know existed, dating. It’s PG-13 so nothing to out there, we want teens to see a beautiful intelligent Black leader in Hermione as she growns up, so it will be darker with more adult themes, but still PG-13.
Hermione Roomies/Friends/Classmates/Emenies
Apartmentmates- Parvarti & Padma Patil, Kellah Williams. Ginny Weasley (first woman in the family to go to a IM, her mom is very proud)
Next door student apartments
-Percy Weasley & Penelope Clearwater. Percy worked the ministry taking corospondance classes in Comparative Magical Politics & Wizarding (Hermione's same field) at the ministry’s Intern program, as they were funded by his intern job. After the battle at Hogwarts Percy needed a change, and after a breakdown he decided to quit his job and become a full time student. He is now a third year student and Hermiones’s SA (Sorcerers Apprentice/ AKA TA). He currently lives with his girlfriend Penny.
- Dean Thomas. Seamus Finnigan. Neville Longbottom. Ibrahim “Ibi” Bem. Emmanuel “Manny”Bem (who BTW- parents were Voldy supporters even though their mom’s big bro, AKA Uncle Kingsley fought him at Hogwarts. Their parents were killed a few weeks after the battle of Hogwarts and now the boys are being raised by their Uncle the new Minister of magic. They aren’t handeling all their new found “fame” too well.
- Angelina “Angie” Johnson. Alicia “Ali” Spinnet. Two of Hermiones closest friends.
- Hannah Abbot. Susan “Susie” Bones. Marietta “Mari” Edgecombe. Chelsea Cho Chang.
-Justin Finch Fletchley. Ernie Macmillan. Zachariah “Zach” Smith. Michael Corner
-Off Campus Student Mansion. Cuz you know these girls pulled some strings, pooled their money and bought the nicest place in Clifden.
-Pansy Parkinson. Mafalda “Mal” Weasley. Flora Carrie. Hesita “Hess” Carrow. Daphnee & Astoria “Tori” Greengrass.
-Draco Malloy. Blaise Zambini. Joshua “Pike”.
Off campus apartments ( non students)
Lee Jordan. With occasional long visits from his BFF George Weasley who really wants to hang out with Angie.
“Friends/Frenemies” who drop by for a few episodes throughout the series
(these people don’t go to Clifden as Students but still can come by
“ Katie”Bell. Leanne. Oliver Wood. Cormac McLaggen. “Romi” Vane. Dennis Creavy. Luna Lovegood. “Greg” Goyle. “Millie” Bullstrode. Adrian Pucey. Chase Vasiey. Marcus Flint. “Theo” Nott. Miles Bletchley. Graham Montague. Graham Pritchard. Malcom Braddock. Gemma Farley. Cassius “Cass” Warrington. Harry Potter. “Ron”/“Charlie”/“Bill” & Flure Weasley/ . (Some deep cuts here- if you know you know)
Also let’s be honest, HP was pretty white. Black Hermione being roommates with The Patil sisters, & Kellah, and BFFs with Angie, Ali, Dean, Lee, the Bem Bros, & Chelsea would be pretty cool. They have to kick Blaise’s Anti-muggle ass though.
Ps 19 years ago, Snape one got stupid potion drunk after he ran into a Lily-Lookalike visiting London from Canada. He saw her again that night, and being that she had just had a bad breakup and he looked like her goth musician boyfriend, well... lets just say, Draco is going to have surprise roommate who just graduated from Ilvermorny and reminds him very very much of an old teacher, with Lilly’s eyes of course 😋

Madam Umbridge Home for Wayward Girls by LovelyVillain
E/Ma | WIP | 469k

I really like your posts especially the Hermione critical ones. I'm trying to convince my friend that Hermione isn't perfect and your posts explain it really well. If it's alright with you, can you share some links to your posts in chronological order? For e.g. the fourth book, fifth book, and so on. I am reading you new story Beloved. In the latest chapter, I don't understand the hostility between Hermione and Jones. Did you have another story where there back story or history is explained. Thank You.
Mornin’ Nonnie. Coffee is brewed in the kitchen.
TL;DR answer: - Read Ch. 16 of Ron Weasley Chronicles.
Long answer under the cut below because it’s long and spoilerish for Beloved and other fics in my entire Nicheverse.
Hemera Octavia Jones is an OC of mine. She’s s statuesque at 1.85M, dark brown skin, unapolgetic in being cometent to the point of arrogance, unabashedly Bisexual (*in a relationship with Aurora Sinestra, Astronomy Prof at Hogwarts, whom she met when she was DADA professor in the 1998-1999 post-war term), best friends with Kingsley Shacklebolt (even if she is a few years younger), cousin to Hesetia and Gwenog Jones, and 1983 graduate of Hogwarts (Hufflepuff House)
She’s much like how Okoye is written for the film adaptation of Black Panter - but that was purely accidental on my part, considering I’ve not yet watched it and wrote Jones before the movie came out (nor have I read the first comic.)
I wanted someone who was a force of nature and much a foil for Hermione, like another wing of the same bird with similar goals.
She started in the program right out of Hogwarts, having Gawain Robards and Kingsley Shacklebolt as Seniors (and later, Moody, too, before he retired.)
Her first and only year at Hogwarts (which is in a half-written Yr 8 fic focusing on the friendship of Hermione, Ginny, and Luna while the guys are off being Aurors) was wrought with problems, most of them caused by Hermione Granger. Jones, though, also saw so many of Hermione’s weak moments, the ones where she lost her temper, had PTSD flashbacks, nightmares, and other mental health problems. Admittedly, Jones also protected Hermione, sometimes from herself, and from additional scrutiny from others and outside influences, so she would have a chance.
Hermione never realizes that until much, much later on.
(This is also when we get a better introduction to Audrey Reeves (who is later Audrey Weasley but that’s not what you asked.)
Jones and Hermione knock sparks and will for a very, very long time. Hermione can’t drop the grudge from that first year and Jones takes great pleasure in antagonizing her, because Hermione is so passionate but it’s also a weakness because others can possibly control her by being emotional. (Yes, I realize it’s a toxic trope idea and anti-feminist but it’s also something that women get from other women sometimes, myself included. Thus, while problematic, it’s also realistic.)
But here is the ultimate relavant section from Ch. 16 for you:
“Go on. I’m listening. I figure that after the last coupleof days, I should listen to my mistakes so I can learn from them. You’ll alsonot sugar coat anything for my benefit.”
Hermione leaned against the door. “I don’t know where yougot the idea that we’d be friends from the first day. I don’t know why youpresumed that I would be so open and trusting with someone I didn’t know. Noteven Professor McGonagall can force that. But,” Hermione stopped and she sawHemera nodding, “But when you were teaching us, you were so bloody mental. Youdidn’t listen to anything the survivors were telling you. Because you are anAuror, you taught the class like no one else had gone through anything worsethan taking our OWLs. Everyone in your classroomof seventh-year students had been throughhell, one way or another. Yet you treated us like first years that didn’tdeserve to be out from our Mum’s apron strings.”
“I had a task, Granger. The Minister wanted you in the AurorCorps and we needed the help. He thought you would be an amazing asset. I wasalso there to see if anyone else had the aptitude for it. When you’re down to12 Aurors from 100 because of the culling and the Coup, you take what mightwork.”
Hemera winced while shifting in her bed. “But there wassomething else, something personal. Ron let it slip that you attacked him onetime, with magic. He explained what happenedwhen he was first assigned to me as a trainee. He tried to say he wasresponsible for it, and I know that’s bullshit. But it caused a huge problem.Do you want to know what that was, and what happened as a result?” Hemera’seyes flashed. “No matter how hard I worked him, insulted him, belittled him, orhumiliated him, he wouldn’t raise his wand against me. An Auror who won’tdefend himself is useless to me and will probably get a whole team killed. Nomatter what I did to him, he wouldn’t raise his wand against me. He’d have noproblems with the other Seniors in training. Butme, a woman? He said he couldn’t do it, ‘cause of what you did to him.
“Do you know how bloody long it took me to re-train Ronafter that incident? It took a month of daily training; a month of wasted time, all because you got shirty he went and kissed another girl ‘cause you couldn’tpull your finger out and tell the bloke you fancied him.”
“I couldn’t afford to lose him as my best friend!” Hermioneyelled. She looked and saw Harry roll over in his bed and Ron shift but wentback to snoring. “I didn’t know and you never said.”
“I was too busy fixing your mistakes, mistakes you neverbother to apologize for. Hell, even I can say I’m sorry and I’m as much of an arseholeas anyone. But you? Ron casually mentions off-hand that he has to back downwhile rowing with you, and apologize anytime that you think he’s wrong. The fewtimes he’s stood up to you and tried to tell you when he’s feeling less thanstellar you bite his bloody head off. Fuck, he has zero pride when it comes tostanding up for himself, because you and Potter never once tell him that he isright about something.”
“That’s impossible. Ron never backs down from a fight, especially with me.”
“Isn’t it? You weren’t there seeing him constantly beingknocked on his arse because he wouldn’t raise his wand in self-defense. Whensomeone you love attacks you with magic it is a hard betrayal to overcome. Butsomehow he did but the consequences held him back until he pulled his head outof his arse and raised his wand to me and fought back like you finally did. It took me dropping my wand and tellinghim that he either raise his wand to me and fight back or I would personallykick his arse out of the program. I berated him in front of everyone andbelittled him to the point he slugged me before walking out.”
“Good for him,” Hermione muttered. “I would have loved toslug you myself some of those days.”
“Things would have gone swimmingly for you had you tried,Granger. You might have gotten over your fear and made something of yourself, for the Auror corps.”
Jones had a secondary task: recruiting for the Aurors post-war. Hermione was who they wanted, just as much as Ron and Neville and Harry. But her post-war time (years, really) was filled with much mental health distress, such as ptsd, anxiety, sleep deprivation from nightmares, and a short-term sleeping draught potion addiction (where sleep was vital but also a co-morbidity to depression, too.)
They knock sparks but Jones also had to re-train Ron to be who he needed to be, as an Auror. While Viv has mentioned in her public and private meta that Ron needs praise and encouragement and positive support, Jones didn’t know that and didn’t do such until after he would be willing to stand up for himself. Once he did/does, the relationship changes for the better, even if it appears to be negative.
For the relationship with Ron, it’s about self-respect. Once he has that, Jones can respect him too, even if she disagrees. Admittedly, that’s one of my not-necessarily positive traits. O_O
So when I write this, it’s a case of breaking a bad habit and rebuilding a new one. When you break someone, it’s your personal responsibility to rebuild them. That takes patience, determination, and giving a (dung) about their welfare and well-being. That’s what Jones did here - which Hermione never realized that it was for his own safety and benefit.
Yes Ron is soft-hearted and so caring but he had a job he wanted to do and was incapable of doing it if he wouldn’t stand up for himself and others. Once he decided to do such, his career took off.
It’s only years later that she sees Ron and Harry as peers, along with Hermione, but it’s that she has trust issues and can’t get too close because Aurors get injured, maimed, and killed in their profession. Once she realizes that she can get close to them, as a peer and as a friend later on, the relationship blooms for everyone, including Hermione.
So nonnie, if you read this far, congratulations. Now you know why Auror Hemera Jones is vital in my nicheverse.

Apparently the Ministry is a racist, unfair institution. Who'd have thought? When Hermione Granger finds out that in order to get the internship of her dreams, she’ll need to pay the expensive tuition for them to, in their words “justify letting a muggleborn into the Ministry's esteemed program,” she needs to find a job that will pay quick. Unfortunately, there aren’t many jobs open to muggleborns. Fortunately Hermione would do anything to get the best results. And anything might just mean murder.

The Rise and Triumph of Harry Potter
One of the most well-known wizards in modern history, Harry James Potter was born on July 31, 1980. Known for his famous defeat of the dark wizard, Tom Riddle (known famously as Lord Voldemort), at the battle of Hogwarts in 1998 – his history of helping the wizarding world dates back to when he was just a year old.
Born to muggleborn Lily Evans and pureblood James Potter (both members of the original Order of the Phoenix) Harry Potter was a half-blood wizard born in the well-known wizarding village of Godric’s Hollow. In his infancy, his parents were forced into hiding due to threat from Riddle. There has been much speculation as to the reason why the family was threatened, but it is thought to be due to a prophecy regarding Harry and Riddle (the supposed prophecy has never been confirmed by Potter).
The Potter family stayed in hiding until October 31, 1981 when Riddle located the family at their safe house. The Potter family had been protected by the Fidelius charm, and it was long believed that the Potter’s best friend (notorious accused mass murderer and later cleared) Sirius Black had been the one to give up the Potter’s location to Riddle. It was later discovered, however, that the believed-to-be-dead Peter Pettigrew had actually been the one to sacrifice his friends to Riddle.
Upon locating them, Riddle famously murdered both Lily and James Potter, and proceeded to attempt the killing curse on infant Harry Potter. This would be the first occasion that young Harry Potter helped the wizarding world, as a whole. The killing curse rebounded and hit Riddle, leaving nothing but the well-known lightning bolt scar upon Potter’s forehead. It was later learned that when Lily Potter died defending her son, an ancient magic was invoked protecting the young Potter from Riddle and thus causing the curse to rebound.
After the death of his parents, Potter was taken to muggle family on his mother’s side in Little Whinging. He grew up there, away from the wizarding world, for the next 11 years. Not much is known about his life with the muggles, but it is known that this family was incredibly anti-wizard and did not agree with his involvement in the wizarding world from 11 years old and on. On July 31st, 1991 Rubeus Hagrid (Keeper of Keys and Grounds and Care of Magical Creatures professor at Hogwarts), located Harry Potter and advised him for the first time that he was a wizard. Potter started his first year at Hogwarts in September of this same year and there met his famous cohorts Hermione Granger and Ronald Weasley. He was also sorted into Gryffindor house at this time. It was during this year that Potter first joined the Gryffindor Quidditch team as seeker, found by Professor Minerva McGonagall, officially making him the youngest quidditch player in a century. Many compared Potter to his father, another Gryffindor player known for his quidditch prowess. James Potter, however, was a chaser unlike his son. On October 31st of this year, Potter, Weasley, and Granger took down a fully grown mountain troll which had gotten into the castle. This sort of victory was unheard of for children of this age.
In June of 1992, Potter once again took on Riddle, then possessing Hogwarts professor Quirinus Quirrell, and once again came out triumphant. He also prevented the rare Philosopher’s Stone from falling into the hands of one of the most evil wizards of all time.
In September of 1992, Potter began his second year at Hogwarts. It was this year in which Potter first showed his ability to speak parseltongue, an ability widely known to be a trait unique to ancestors of Salazar Slytherin himself. On May 29, 1993 Potter discovered the rumored Chamber of Secrets within Hogwarts castle and slayed the basilisk lurking within. He saved Ginevra Weasley from the beast at this time.
In September of 1993, Potter began his third year at Hogwarts. In June of this year , he came out with a tale many would later learn to be true – that his Godfather, Sirius Black, was innocent and a wizard long believed to be dead, Peter Pettigrew, was alive and attempting to assist the dark lord. The minister at this time, Cornelius Fudge, did not believe Potter and instead ordered the Azkaban dementors patrolling Hogwarts to give Sirius Black “the kiss”. Black escaped, and many believe that 13-year-old Potter had something to do with it.
In August of 1994, Potter attended the Quidditch world cup with wizarding family the Weasleys (with whom he has been known to be incredibly close). Many remember the mayhem that broke out at this cup, with supporters of Riddle torturing muggles and ending the celebrations prematurely. In September of this year, Potter began his fourth year at Hogwarts. In October 1994, Potter was chosen as a fourth champion for the Triwizard Tournament, which had never happened previously. It was later discovered that a follower of Riddle had tricked the Goblet of Fire into accepting Potter under a fourth, fake, school. Potter took part in all three tasks of the tournament. The first task had been to recover a golden egg from a live dragon. Potter used his flying prowess and charm work to retrieve the egg from a Hungarian Horntail. The second task took place in the lake at Hogwarts, where Potter notoriously waited until all of the champions’ loved ones were saved, at risk to his own score, before completing the challenge. The final task (taking place June 24, 1995) is most well-known of all Triwizard Tasks in history. This took place in a maze created by the ministry, and Potter came out triumphant, however what makes this most well known is the death of student and champion Cedric Diggory. Potter claimed that his death had been caused by Peter Pettigrew during a ritual to bring back the dark wizard Riddle to full strength, in a graveyard in Little Hangleton. Potter claimed to have once again faced and triumphed over Riddle. At the time, many did not believe him, and the ministry condemned this story, however it was later found to be true. It was also during this year that Daily Prophet writer Rita Skeeter had taken an interest in him for the first time.
During the summer of 1995, the Ministry of Magic began a smear campaign against Potter and Hogwarts Headmaster of the time, Albus Dumbledore. They advised the wizarding community that Potter and Dumbledore were not being truthful regarding the return of Riddle. In August of 1995, two dementors attacked Potter and his muggle cousin, causing Potter to cast a Patronus charm and subsequently earning him a hearing at the Ministry. This is notable, as dementors typically did not leave Azkaban except on Ministry orders and did not venture into muggle territory. It was also unheard of for an underage wizard to receive a full criminal trial before the Wizengamot for use of underage magic. At the hearing on August 12, it was discovered that Potter was able to cast a corporeal patronus in the shape of a stag, and had been able to since his third year at Hogwarts, due to the tutelage of Remus Lupin. Potter was found innocent and cleared of all charges at this hearing.
In September of that year, Potter began his fifth year at Hogwarts, famously clashing with Ministry official Dolores Umbridge, the newly appointed High Inquisitor of Hogwarts (a new position). Potter was reportedly in trouble a majority of the school year. During this year, Potter also gave his famous one on one interview with Rita Skeeter for magazine The Quibbler, detailing his tale of the events that had taken place in the Little Hangleton graveyard the previous year. In June of 1996 he traveled to the ministry with fellow Gryffindor fifth years Neville Longbottom (son of well-known aurors Frank and Alice Longbottom ), Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger; and fourth years Ginny Weasley (Gryffindor) and Luna Lovegood (Ravenclaw). There is still much that is unconfirmed about the 1996 Battle at the Ministry of Magic, however it is believed that Potter and friends traveled to the famed Hall of Prophecies, destroying the entirety of its contents. They battled many confirmed Death Eaters, such as Lucius Malfoy and Bellatrix Lestrange, and ultimately ended up in the main hall of the Ministry. At this time, Albus Dumbledore arrived and assisted Potter in once again taking down Riddle, now confirmed to be back as he was witnessed by multiple ministry employees, including the Minister of Magic himself. During this battle, Sirius Black was notoriously murdered by Bellatrix Lestrange.
In September of 1996, Potter began his sixth year at Hogwarts. He had achieved enough OWLs to pursue classes pertaining to his dream of becoming an auror for the ministry and began taking the classes he would need to reach this lofty goal. His romance with future wife, Ginevra Weasley, also began in this year. On June 30, 1997, the Battle of the Astronomy Tower took place. Potter and Dumbledore had been off campus and arrived back to the school after Death Eaters had already infiltrated it. Dumbledore was famously killed at this point, in the astronomy tower by Professor Severus Snape. Potter was there, hidden underneath his famous invisibility cloak and trapped by a body bind curse. He had been the one who confirmed Dumbledore’s murderer to be Snape. This battle yielded no other professor or student deaths; however, it was a huge blow to security and trust in the school. This also marked the beginning of the rise of the Death Eaters within the Ministry and Hogwarts. Potter attended Dumbledore’s funeral, before returning to his muggle family one last time.
During the summer of 1997, Potter left his family’s home in Little Whinging and on July 27, the Battle of Little Whinging took place in the skies above his childhood home. Well known auror Mad-Eye Moody was murdered during this battle. Potter returned to a safe location and remained hidden for quite some time. It was later confirmed that he attended the wedding of Bill and Fleur Weasley on August 1, under a disguise. It was also on this day that the Ministry of Magic fell, and Potter, Ronald Weasley, and Hermione Granger went on the run. It is unknown exactly what trio were doing for a majority of the time they were underground, but they were rumored to be seen at Malfoy Manor around Easter 1998, and were confirmed to be at Gringotts Bank on May 1, 1998. The “Golden Trio” broke into a vault and escaped upon the back of a dragon, next being seen at the Battle of Hogwarts. The Battle of Hogwarts took place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry on May 2, 1988. This battle was one of the most devastating battles of modern wizarding history, most notable not only because of its death count, but because of how many young witches and wizards were lost on this day. Notable among them were Remus Lupin, Nymphadora Tonks, and Fred Weasley, all of whom were considered family by Potter. Potter once again faced death at the hands of Riddle, and once again survived the killing curse, making him the only wizard alive to survive the killing curse, not just once, but twice. Ultimately, Potter faced Riddle in a duel, admitting to the crowd that he had been hunting horcruxes (incredibly dark magic, we highly discourage readers from reading about these items), that Riddle has presumably made. He also stated that he was the owner of the much-coveted elder wand, a wand rumored to be one of the three “deathly hallows” referred to in the children’s tale “The Three Brothers” by Beedle the Bard. As the sun rose that morning, Potter cast his most famous spell, Expelliarmus, and defeated Tom Riddle once and for all.
He has since become an accomplished auror, married Ginevra Weasley, and had three children – James, Albus, and Lily Potter.

the whole story
CHARACTER’S FULL NAME : John Dawlish. No middle name and no, John isn’t a nickname. He’s often called Jack, though he never understood how Jack became a nickname for John. He never understood why John needed a nickname at all, to be perfectly honest. Especially one that only has one letter in common and isn’t actually any shorter. John is the fourth John Dawlish in his family, though they luckily let the number go after the third. His mother affectionately calls him Jr, just to minimize confusion, since both he and his father switch back and forth between John and Jack.
CHARACTER’S AGE / BIRTHDAY : 27 / 12 September 1951
OCCUPATION : Auror. John didn’t always know he wanted to be an Auror. In fact, he never really thought about it when he was in school at all. John had no real idea what he wanted to do. He took whatever NEWT level classes interested and any he thought might be helpful down the line, but never had a specific focus. After leaving Hogwarts he got a job at the Ministry as an undersecretary in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, mostly because it was what was available at the time and it was as good as anything else. Not that you would have known it from his interview, however. John Dawlish, if ever good at anything, was always good at selling himself. While the job was a placeholder for him, he interviewed as if it was his dream to follow on the coattails of whatever minister or other, learning at their shoulder how to run the world. He’d been at the Ministry just under two years when the idea of being an Auror finally crossed his mind. Between observations around the ministry, the things he read in reports, and the potential adventure the job held, John took a liking to it. So he put in his notice and requested a transfer to Auror training. Many underestimated him, having known him as the assistant to the assistant to their boss and not a wizard capable of the physical and magical demands being an auror put on a person. But John had never before met a challenge he couldn’t conquer, and that would be no exception.
WAND DESCRIPTION : Hornbeam with a unicorn tail hair core, 14¼ inches, rigid. This is a wand for the stubborn and for the determined. Hornbeam wands adapt quickly to the style of magic of their owner and, when truly loyal, will refuse to perform magic that does not fall in line with the user’s moral code - wherther good or bad. They find themselves most often in the hands of wizard’s with a single pure passion. Combined with a unicorn tail hair core, this wand is one that will be wielded by only one wizard in all of it’s history, and will undoubtedly expire before it can be used by another.
WHY THIS CHARACTER? : I have been staring at John Dawlish for a couple weeks now and it took me a long time to really find in my head who he is. I was intrigued by him at first because Armie Hammer and because I always had this theory about Dawlish. I always thought to myself, ok. In the Harry Potter series we have this Auror who Dumbledore tells us is exceedingly smart. He achieved outstandings in all of his NEWTS. And yet, every time we see him, he is getting his ass handed to him in the most ridiculous ways. He gets beat to hell by Augusta Longbottom, Dumbledore gets the drop on him even though the is on high alert, he tripped over another colleague and knocked himself unconscious! Why, JK, would you bother telling us how smart Dawlish was meant to be if you were just going to make him this foible. So I started thinking and I came to this conclusion that I then fell in love with. John is a soldier, the kind that follows orders and believes in a cause. This can take so many different forms, though, and not all soldiers are in the Order of the Phoneix. John’s loyalties lie with the Auror Department itself. It took him a long time to find his place there and when he did, he found a home. But even thought that was his unit, that was his home, he knew that Voldemort was wrong and could not be allowed to win. So he stayed with the Aurors faithfully and did what he could to uphold his duty from within. Proving useless to Voldemort, allowing himself time and time again to be beaten when it would serve the people he believed could defeat Voldemort. And now I’m just crying over John Dawlish okay.
AFFILIATION : I answered a lot of this up on the last question because I was rambling but. John is neutral. He officially sides with neither the Order of the Phoenix nor the Death Eaters, though he has his strong opinions about each organization. As far as the Death Eaters are concerned, Dawlish believes they are a menace to everything good about the world and that they must be stopped before they can gain any real power. It is no secret that he is one of their more vehement opposers in the Auror Department and someone responsible for a fair number of their arrests and setbacks. As for the Order, his opinions are far more elusive. John knows of the Order - he would have to be a crap Auror not to - but while he supports their goals, their methods and their operations go against his personal code. They are vigilantes, when you get down to it, and John is a firm believer that the system is in place for a reason. One extreme faction cannot be balanced by another, they can only pound against one another until something combusts.
HOW DOES YOUR CHARACTER FEEL ABOUT THE WAR? : John does fight in this war, every day and with all that he has. Just because he’s not a member of the Order, doesn’t mean he doesn’t do everything in his power to undermine and put down Voldemort and his psychotic followers. Muggle blood runs just as strong in his veins as does magical and John doesn’t believe there is a shred of difference. To persecute people because of their parentage is to him, a base affront to human decency and he is as quick as anyone else to say it.
WHAT IS YOUR CHARACTER’S GREATEST AMBITION? : John’s greatest ambition is the pursuit of ambition itself. Never having had a clear vision in mind for his future, John only knew that he wanted to be great. He wanted to meet and exceed expectations at every turn. Having found a career he is passionate about in the Auror office, John channels that desire for greatness now into his work.
HEADCANONS :
1. John’s favorite subject in school was Transfiguration. In that class, Charms coming in a close second, there was a definite ability to excel. It wasn’t a soft subject like History or Divination, it was cut and dry. He could practice, work at technique and pronunciation, and he could improve. John one day hopes to become a registered Animagus, merely because to be able to achieve the title would be a challenge.
2. He graduated top of his class at Hogwarts, achieving NEWTS in the greatest number of classes one could feasibly take at a time (at least until Hermione Granger).
3. His favorite time of the day is morning. He is an early riser, not one to sleep for excessive amounts of time. Time spent sleeping is, in his opinion, time spent wasted. He can get more done before nine am than most can get done in a day.
4. John is demisexual. He’s not an overtly sexual person, he doesn’t generally flirt or go for one night stands or flings. He most often feels attraction to people based on his emotional connection to them, not based on their looks or their gender (though his preferred gender is generally male). He is far more likely to fall for someone he is already close to and already admires and respects than he is to fall for the hot guy at the bar.
5. After the second war, John withdraws from he magical community. He resigns from the Ministry and moves back home, living for a time with his brother and his family. He puts his wand away, living as a muggle.
SHIPS / ANTI-SHIPS : John/Chemistry
EXTRA INFORMATION :
1. BOGGART: John’s boggart is complete darkness. It’s the kind of dark that cuts your senses off at the knees. You can’t see but it’s so dark that you can’t even be sure you can hear. You can hear everything but at the same time, nothing. And you don’t know if it’s because there is nothing to hear or because you’ve gone deaf as well as blind. John fears losing access to his senses. They have always been his greatest asset and the idea of being without them terrifies him. To dispel the boggart, to bring light to the dark, he imagines the mos ridiculous of suprise parties. With the shouting of the word Riddikulus, the lights come on and people in masks appear from behind furniture and from thin air.
2. PATRONUS: John’s patronus is a hawk. Hawk’s are observant animals, capable of taking in all relevant details around them, creating a plan, and executing it to perfection . It represents a perfectionist, someone who is both observer and hunter and covers both sides of the coin. Someone independent, who relies on himself before others. To conjure his patronus, John calls on the memory of his brother. It isn’t just one memory that fuels the spell, but a montage of moments over the course of a lifetime. His brother’s wedding, summers spent exploring, nights spent talking until the sun rose, the unconditional support and love he feels with his brother and finds in him.
BIOGRAPHY
John Dawlish was born into a family, a home, and a life that was remarkably free of dramatics or extremes. He was the oldest of two sons, born into a family balanced perfectly between the magical and muggle worlds. His mother, a muggle born witch, and his father, a halfblood, were resolutely normal people. Both were Healers, his father worked at St. Mungo’s and his mother worked in her own practice in their small home town. His entire childhood would be spent answering whether or not he would follow in their footsteps.
And for a time he thought he might. But then, the young John Dawlish also thought he might be the Minister for Magic, a professional Exploding Snaps player, the front man for a muggle band, a professor at Hogwarts, an author, a journalist, a missionary, or a dragon tamer. He never could settle on just one thing he wanted to do, the only thing he could settle on was that whatever he did, he wanted to be the best.
When he was four, his first important job was thrust on him. His brother, Timothy, was born. John wasn’t entirely thrilled with that development, or so his parents always told him, and he didn’t doubt them. Some of his earliest memories are of running off with his friends, his little brother left behind because he was too small or too boring or too - his brother. There was no rhyme or reason to why he didn’t want the smaller Dawlish around, it just wasn’t what you did. He was four years older, after all. He was on an entirely different plane than the shy little boy who preferred reading to playing at the park or stealing cookies out of the cookie jar. It was the only job that John didn’t try to excel at right away. In fact, he never thought about his failures as a brother, not while he was young.
Neither of John’s parents much worried about his magical aptitude. He was young when he showed his first signs of magic, only six. He was out playing in the backyard with some of his mates and they were all taking turns jumping over the creek that bordered the Dawlish’s yard. John, with a need to be the best as always, had not yet reached the imposing height he would one day achieve and should not have been attempting the jumps he was. He took a running start and began his sixth leap, the leap that should have won him the bragging rights and also should have landed him in the hospital with a broken neck and paralyses. His foot slipped as he pushed off the ground and by all rights he should have landed on his neck in the shallow rock bottomed creek. Instead, he sailed over it, crossing an impossible distance, as his mother watched with her heart in her throat from the kitchen window.
He was too busy being scolded by his mother as she ran out of the house to realize that what he’d just done had been magic. He didn’t even realize that was what had happened until he overheard his mother recounting the story to his father, titling her story ‘the first magic john every did.’ After that, he tried and tried and tried to perform magic again. He snuck his father’s wand out at night after bedtime, playing with it and trying to make it spark or flash or do something. The first books he ever read were spellbooks, reading and thoroughly mispronouncing spells whenever his mother wasn’t looking. He set more things on fire than any muggle boy could dream of doing but each failed attempt was just a step closer to success. By the time he got to school, he could perform a number of small spells and he was happy to demonstrate them for anyone who would humor him enough to watch.
It was this pattern of obsessive hard work that made John’s mother think he would be a Hufflepuff, as she had been, when he finally went to Hogwarts. But it wasn’t a dedication to hard work itself that John was expressing. It was a desire to be the best. It was a trait that would land him very firmly in Slytherin. John fit well in his house, thriving on the challenge of living among other overachievers. He was one of the quieter boys, not because he was shy but because he was constantly taking in his surroundings. He watched people, listened to them when they didn’t know he could hear, learned from them. And he used it all to his own advantage.
And then when John was fourteen, his failures as a brother - the only thing he’d ever really failed at - were put into sharp focus. His brother should have been getting his letter that year, should have started his first year at Hogwarts when John started his fifth. But his brother would never come to Hogwarts. Though the family had been waiting with bated breath, Timothy Dawlish never showed any magic and when he turned eleven, they had to face facts. He was a squib. John knew that was bad, in theory, but it wasn’t until he went home for summer holidays that he saw how desolate Timmy was. The boys had never been close before that summer but after, John could never be called a bad brother again.
They spent every day together, John curbing every show off urge he had and living for three months completely magic free. When he went back to school, his brother was not the only crying at their goodbye. For the first time, though, they kept in touch with letters and pictures, they were closer than ever and would remain that way from that point forward.
John’s ambitious nature didn’t flag all the way through school, even when faced with the need to choose a career and finding himself unable to do so. Instead of having a focus, he simply took all the NEWT courses he could handle, achieving Outstandings in every one. He left school and got a job in the Ministry, working as an undersecretary to the Minister of Magical Law Enforcement. He worked there for two years before the idea of being an Auror truly crossed his mind. His friend from school, Alastor, was an Auror and between the stories he heard from him, the things he read in the reports, and the general air of adventure and greatness that followed the Aurors, John thought it was worth the pursuing. He didn’t intend to find in that job a passion for the work and for the principles. He didn’t expect to love it.
PARA SAMPLE
“But Jackie, I don’t understand. If you’re fighting so hard, why not? It makes sense.”
John was sitting in the main room of his brother’s house, a beer in his hand as the two talked. Upstairs, Tim’s wife was giving their twin girls a bath and getting them ready for bed while the brothers caught up. Though a squib, Tim’s wife was a witch and between her and the rest of the Dawlish family, Tim was as well aware of the war as anyone else. Somehow the conversation had gotten onto the topic of the rumored group of fighters who were forming a group to oppose the Death Eaters, John was hesitant to talk about.
“Because they’re not fighting the right way,” John pointed out, perhaps for the third time. His voice wasn’t argumentative, not bitterly so. It was a debate, the kind common between the brothers. “Everything they do is unsanctioned and illegal. So yeah, they stop some Dark Wizards but they’re breaking the law themselves. Unless they kill them, there’s no official way to clean up their mess. And if they do kill someone, we’ve got to bring one of the ‘heros’ in and that makes our job as Aurors harder.
Timmy, John knew, was a romantic. And well removed from the fighting. To him, these heroes - the Order - were knights in shining armor. They were the ultimate good that would save them all but to John, they only complicated matters. They had a good foundation, he could at least say that, and he wouldn’t argue with their end goals. But he couldn’t approve of their methods, not when he found himself jumping through hoops to make any good come of some of the more - unorthodox - things they had done.
“It’s a war. There isn’t any right way. There’s just good and bad.”
John shook his head. He wished it were that simple. He wished he could look at the world and only see in shades of right or wrong. That there wasn’t more to think of other than the idealistic images everyone wanted. There would always be both sides, even when the war was over, John knew that. There was no way to win this war and make it last if all you wanted to do was wipe out the other side.
“It won’t always be a war. One day the war will be over. And if either of these groups have their way, the other side will end in flames. And flames only make it easier for stronger factions to rise from the ashes.”
