Archie Andrews is suffering SO much in the aftermath of losing his father, and it's one of the great burdens of his life that he has such a FailMother who stopped loving his dad a long long time ago. He just confessed to her that he is not ok, he is not healing, he is completely subsumed in grief, and all Mary Andrews can manage is that she doesn't share the grief. Egads.

“‘Machine’ is journalese....Inexact terms like that are part of the war psychosis. People are never machines, even when they want to be. You have to start somewhere.”
andrew raynes you will always be an anti war king to me, idc what anyone else (ralph) says you will always be famous
#mary renault#the charioteer#andrew raynes#another funny aspect of this book is that i actually respect quakers anti-war stance#so ralph's hating andrew for this makes me laugh

Remember when Amara brought Mary back as a thank you gift to Dean for fixing her relationship with Chuck and then Mary proceeded to be a terrible human being and Amara tried to gaslight him on the meaning of a gift (I never said it would make you feel good tho 🤨).
Andrew Dabb is poisonous I am so serious and my one comfort is he’s never touching anything I love again.

"I want to be remembered as the Anti-JK-Rowling."
"JK Rowling the billionaire author (which, by the way, billionaires should not exist) who instead of using her wealth and reach to better our world has decided to spend her days on Twitter attacking trans people for having the audacity to exist. Imagine, you are one of the BIGGEST authors the world has ever known, writing books for standing up for what's right, only to turn into the villain you warned about.
"What a slap in the face that is. What an absolute betrayal. People like that - people who think that they are somehow better than others, more human, deserve to be shunned from society, no ifs, ands, or buts, and nothing less than just that. At the end of the day, Rowling has no idea who I am, and that's okay. I'm going to keep on doing what I'm doing, writing for my community who deserves to see themselves in books.
"Our stories matter. Important stories that show all the different facets of our lives. Stories where we get to be the heroes. Stories where we get to be the villains. Stories where our truths are put down on page. Trans and nonbinary authors like Ryka Aoki, Anna Marie Macklemore, Andrew Joseph White. Those authors are telling trans stories in a way that no one has ever done before, putting trans characters front and center where they belong in stories that defy imagination."

TV Show idea: A Christian woman named Juliet moves into a new neighborhood, hoping to find a husband and have a child. After moving into her new home, she goes to meet her next-door neighbors - and is horrified to find out it’s a loud, party-girl, dirty mouthed black lesbian named Maggie Dalene and her smart, CEO girlfriend Mary (played by Laverne Cox). Juliet does everything she can to try and turn them to Christ. She does it both forward and subtle. While she does this, she also meets and falls in love with a man named Paul, and starts visiting the local orphanage to bring the kids there to faith.
The main plot points of the first season:
Juliet’s (failed) attempts to convert Mary and Maggie. They keep running into each other. Maggie goes the opposite way and tries to get Juliet to relax a little. Juliet is especially concerned when Christmas comes around and they bring out the Menorah.
Juliet meets three triplets at the orphanage named Jesus, Emmy, and Susej. Susej is the only girl. Juliet tries to get the three Jewish kids to convert, but they refuse. She also tries to get Emmy to go by his full name, Emmanuel - but he finds it stupid.
Lucifer and Abbadon (Lucy and Abby) are a gay gender-unconforming couple who have extremely random jobs everywhere. They seem to be working everywhere. Cashiers, fake-Gucci boot sellers, librarians, janitors, shelf restockers, anything. They’re there. No one else mentions it. It drives Juliet insane. She finds the idea of them being feminine men disturbing, but she can’t call them anything but Lucy and Abby as she refuses to say the Devil’s name. She also finds Abby being black disturbing.
It’s often hinted at that Susej is the Antichrist. And by hinted at I mean she’s always staring piercingly into empty space, whispering threateningly, and is always there when things go wrong. Also her eyes occasionally go black and she starts floating and speaking ancient curses. Juliet is terrified. No one else notices.
Jesus is friends with a group of 12 boys from the orphanage, named Peter, James, John, Andrew, Phillip, Judas I, Matthew, Thomas, James A, Bart, Judas T, and Simon. Jesus goes by Jeezy-boi. The others go by Peezy, Jazzy, Jozzy, Azzy, Pheezy, Jewzy, Meezy, Teezy, Jameezy, Beezy, Yeezy, and Seezy. They’re all played by 12-year-olds, except Yeezy, who’s played by a Kanye West-lookalike. It’s never remarked upon. He talks like Kanye.
Juliet tries to get Mary to turn to God. She will often compare her to her “namesake”, Mary of Jesus fame, to show her the “right side”. Mary takes none of it and points out that Mary and Jesus were Jewish. Mary is very no-nonsense when it comes to these things. Mary is heavily implied to actually BE Mother Mary as she knows things the church doesn’t.
Paul keeps accidentally calling Juliet Jennifer. She doesn’t notice. He’s often drunk and rude to waiters and retail workers. Juliet is too, mind you. He hides his phone and yells a lot. He complains about Juliet’s decision to “wait until marriage”, but doesn’t mind her being anti birth control.
At the end of season 1, Juliet gets married to Paul. He barely gets the vows right at the wedding. Mary and Maggie go out for an unknown trip. There’s a time skip of a few months. Maggie and Mary are celebrating outside of their house, because Maggie just won a Noble Prize in Chemistry. Maggie is yelling “I won! I won!” Juliet smiles and says, “No. I won.” She’s holding a baby in her arms. Maggie paused for a moment and responds “No baby, I won. Paul’s gonna leave yo ass in 3 seconds. You gon have to raise that baby alone. And who says we ain’t got kids?”
Jesus skates by on a skateboard with a cowboy hat. He tips his hat to them as he passed. Emmy is running behind him in a pink skirt. Juliet places her baby down momentarily to talk with them, as Susej comes up and starts whispering to the baby. It nods, and she smiles, before disappearing in a cloud of black smoke. She reappears behind Mary. End of Season 1.
This isn’t a prompt but I would gladly accept criticism and more ideas. And characters. I’m open.

i think you do a really impressive job balancing comprehensive/concise while referencing a lot of complex frameworks(contexts? schools of thought? lol idk what to call that. big brain ideas) but if you have any readings specifically on the institution of psychiatry topic that you would recommend/think are relevant, I'd be interested. it's absolutely not a conversation that's being had enough and I want to be able to articulate myself around it
yes i have readings >:)
first of all, the anti-psychiatry bibliography and resource guide is a great place to start getting oriented in this literature. it's split by sub-topic, and there are paragraphs interspersed throughout that give summaries of major thinkers' positions and short intros to key texts.
it's from 1979, though, so here are some recs from the last 4 decades:
overview critiques
mind fixers: psychiatry's troubled search for the biology of mental illness, by anne harrington
psychiatric hegemony: a marxist theory of mental illness, by bruce m z cohen
desperate remedies: psychiatry's turbulent quest to cure mental illness, by andrew scull
psychiatry and its discontents, by andrew scull
madness is civilization: when the diagnosis was social, 1948–1980, by michael e staub
contesting psychiatry: social movements in mental health, by nick crossley
the dsm & pharmacy
dsm: a history of psychiatry's bible, by allan v horwitz
the dsm-5 in perspective: philosophical reflections on the psychiatric babel, by steeves demazeux & patrick singy
pharmageddon, by david healy
pillaged: psychiatric medications and suicide risk, by ronald w maris
the making of dsm-iii: a diagnostic manual's conquest of american psychiatry, by hannah s decker
the myth of the chemical cure: a critique of psychiatric drug treatment, by joanna moncrieff
the book of woe: the dsm and the unmaking of psychiatry, by gary greenberg
prozac on the couch: prescribing gender in the era of wonder drugs, by jonathan metzl
the creation of psychopharmacology, by david healy
the bitterest pills: the troubling story of antipsychotic drugs, by joanna moncrieff
psychiatry & race
the protest psychosis: how schizophrenia became a black disease, by jonathan metzl
administrations of lunacy: racism and the haunting of american psychiatry at the milledgeville asylum, by mab segrest
the peculiar institution and the making of modern psychiatry, 1840–1880, by wendy gonaver
what's wrong with the poor? psychiatry, race, and the war on poverty, by mical raz
national and cross-national contexts
mad by the millions: mental disorders and the early years of the world health organization, by harry yi-jui wu
psychiatry and empire, by sloan mahone & megan vaughan
ʿaṣfūriyyeh: a history of madness, modernity, and war in the middle east, by joelle m abi-rached
surfacing up: psychiatry and social order in colonial zimbabwe, 1908–1968, by lynette jackson
the british anti-psychiatrists: from institutional psychiatry to the counter-culture, 1960–1971, by oisín wall
crime, madness, and politics in modern france: the medical concept of national decline, by robert a nye
reasoning against madness: psychiatry and the state in rio de janeiro, 1830–1944, by manuella meyer
colonial madness: psychiatry in french north africa, by richard keller
madhouse: psychiatry and politics in cuban history, by jennifer lynn lambe

inheriting madness: professionalization and psychiatric knowledge in 19th century france, by ian r dowbiggin
mad in america: bad science, bad medicine, and the enduring mistreatment of the mentally ill, by robert whitaker
#sorry this is SO MANY things lmao#i wld recommend starting with harrington or scull as an intro and then maybe look at one of the more topic-specific texts#depending on what interests you specifically#book recs#psychiatry

I'll ask for more mer au please to give you a rest from your problem child angel Neil xx
WIP Wednesday (7/24) | Mer Roadtrip AU (Part 46)
When Abram hears the shower cut on, he sinks into the mattress with his hand over his face and his binder clutched to his chest. He can’t believe what he’s just done. He’s invited a perfect stranger into his room! What’s next, calling up his father and telling him their plan?!
God, Mary would bust him across the face for this! But she’s dead, Abram thinks pitifully. She’s dead and he has no one else. He’s got an ally in this fight now. In the form of an anti-social mer who’s been living in a cave for a month…
No, no, no. This is good. Andrew seems trustworthy enough, Abram thinks. And he seems strong. A fighter where Abram is a runner. If Lola and Romero catch up to him now, he’s got backup. Someone to throw his punches for him. Or someone to take punches for him while he escapes. Either way, win-win.
It’s terrible, isn’t it, that he’s so willing to throw this stranger under the bus at the first sign of trouble? Well, what can Abram say? He is his father’s son after all. And his mother’s, too.
Speaking of, Abram moves to sit up and flips the binder open so he can start constructing their exit plan. After all, California’s been nothing but death and sunshine. Abram thinks he’s ready for some shade…

12/31/2011 5:57pm Saturday
Beginning of a new year’s journal. Andrew’s Hotel. SF CA
MAC showers.
The mood is different than last week. Arm bands required. Don’t drive. No guests. No room partys..
Hard to find a place to eat.
I’m a bit beat up—He’s been a bit grumpy.
But, we’re here. Not drinking. Away from Modesto.I got the letter yesterday from”my neighbor” who said that our car port is “a disgrace”.
I talked with Linda, Jeff and the guy who moved into Alvin’s house.
They all said “what’s he gonna do?”
“Alvin” said “You’ve been working on your house”.
Jeff said “must have been someone from your side” (of the court we lived on)
All supportive.
__________________-
MAC’s shower ends—should perk him up. He missed his dosing today.
Hotel man trys to find us a place to eat. Really helpful. Friendly. So is Mary, his fellow desk person. So, the City New Years Eve. Clean and clear.
End of entry
Margin note to the above entry December 31, 2013 Tuesday 8:50pm
Now it (the car port) is graced by a pink chandelier
Time Square Live is on the computer in the computer room. MAC TV’s in the living room. 2 full calendar years clean have now passed.
End of entry
Notes: 9/28/2024
After my partner Jim died in November 2009, I decided to do some rearranging of the massive amount of things thatt we had collected through Nour lives. I’d movesd things ourt into the car port which was visible from the stern. The anonymous neighbor complaint eventually resulted in in a fine by the City. I assumed that the complaint was anti gay more than messy carport motivated. So, after the car port was cleaned my friend installed a pink very gay chandelier in the car port. Later, much later, I learned that the actual complainer was gay! But, the Chandelier glows on and my neighbor who has a view of it out of her living room window says that she loves it!
More tales from suburbia.
MAC lived with me off and on from August of 2010 to December of 2014. He has been homeless since 2018. I write about him now in then in my blog. He still says hi now and then.
I quit drinking 2/21/2011. New Years 2011-2012 was my first sober new Years in decades. I have been sober now over 13 years.
MAC was going to a clinic to take methadone . He missed his dosing to go on our new Year's trip.
Linda, Jeff and "Alvin" were my neighbors on the Court that MAC and I lived on .

assign the last five books you read to riverdale characters
Zazie dans le Métro - Raymond Queneau
Jellybean Jones. Struggled with this one but she's the only one who has that specific childhood brand of insanity and I think Zazie would make snuff films to cope if someone brought it up to her too.
Flowers in the Attic - V.C. Andrews
I mean... Cheryl Blossom. That's a no brainer lol.
Frankenstein - Mary Shelley
Archie Andrews. Some rich fuck molded him into a shape he finds repulsive but can't shake for the rest of his life and he resorts to violence because of it.
The Virgin Suicides - Jeffrey Euginedes
Jughead for the voyeuristic narration and inserting himself into the narrative and shaping everything we come to know about the people he is obsessed with.
The Atrocity Exhibition - JG Ballard
Uhhh the Milkman. Sort of anti America (affectionate) but I also don't know what the point was and I was not enjoying the ride.
Bonus because it actually came before but it's not fiction:
Art: A Sex Book - John Waters & Bruce Hainley
Betty Cooper. Everything can be horny if you try hard enough.

Nine People I'd Like to Get to Know Better
Thanks for the tag @vxyablr! My dm's are always open if anyone wants to scream about rwrb or anything.
Currently watching: I'm not currently watching anything but I recently finished my rewatch of Mary & George and I wanna watch that again maybe soon.
Spicy/sweet/savory: I love spicy food but I can be picky about food textures so that's limits that a bit. Sweet treats are always welcome! Love me something sweet. Savory is also good depending on the food.
Current obsession: There's so many I feel like. Currently the top ones are RWRB and Mary & George. M&G obsession includes my DEEP research on the actual history. The book it's based on (The King's Assassin) should come in the mail next week so I'm SUPER excited about that.
On top of those, in the broadway world I'm still obsessed with Falsettos.
Current celebrity obsessions include Nicholas Galitzine, Taylor Zakhar Perez and Andrew Rannells. My loves
Relationship Status: Single but open for a relationship. So far been unsuccessful.
Last song I listened to: Whizzer Going Down (In Trousers)
*~*~*
I tried to pic some people who I've been seeing in my notes recently who look cool. @babygalitzine @saturnerens @anti-homophobia-cheese @enchanted-unicorns @cornbread-knows
Anyone feel free to do this too <3

On April 4th 1617 John Napier, the mathematician, died.
I hated maths with a vengeance at school, I'm not talking about counting, I can hold my own with that, but real maths. algebra, geometry, topology and worst of all logarithms, which we have Robert Napier to "thank" for, he introduced them in the early 17th century as a means to simplify calculations, aye right!
If John Napier had been born a common man he would maybe have been burnt at the stake, nothing to do with him and his maths nonsense but because he dabbled in the occult at a time when we were routinely setting such people on fire!
James VI was on the throne and his obsession with devilry consigned hundreds of unfortunates to the flames. Unless you were born of a noble family of course. A wee bit background on the Napier's his father was Sir Archibald Napier of Merchiston Castle, and his mother was Janet Bothwell, daughter of the politician and judge Francis Bothwell, Lord of Session, and a sister of Adam Bothwell who became the Bishop of Orkney. Archibald Napier was 16 years old when John Napier was born. John, as was the common practice for members of the nobility at that time, he was privately tutored and did not have formal education until he was 13, when he was sent to St Salvator's College, St Andrews. He dropped out of Uni and toured Europe for a time before returning to Scotland aged 21.
Back to his links with sorcery, several members of John Napier’s family – respected and wealthy participants of Edinburgh society - were commonly known to be wizards or sorcerers. Their necromantic power was feared by nobles as well as peasants from far and wide.
The family wizardry started with Napier's father, Sir Archibald, seventh Laird of Merchiston, who successfully predicted when Mary, then the former Queen of Scotland, would leave Lochleven Castle, where she was imprisoned. The story goes: "Claude Nan, the Queen's secretary, wrote that 'the Laird of Markyston (Sir Archibald), who had the reputation of being a great wizard, made bets with several persons to the amount of five hundred crowns, that by the 5th of May Her Majesty would be out of Lochleven." Mary escaped on 2 May 1568 – and the senior Napier was presumably wealthier for his prediction.
Sir Archibald married Janet Bothwell, sister of Adam, Bishop of Orkney, who the paper said was "a notorious necromancer", so that their son, the future mathematician, inherited "a double inclination towards the magic arts". This might explain some of John's odd behaviour. A necromancer is a wizard or magician by the way, I had to google it!
Tenants who lived on the vast Merchiston estate south-west of Edinburgh thought John to be a bit mysterious at times, Napier would be seen many evenings wearing a long gown, pacing outside his tower chamber, a private work area where he often would pass many long hours alone.
Many people thought that his pet black cockerel was a familiar – a supernatural being which assisted witches and wizards in their magical practice. However, the Napier family held the hereditary role of King’s Poulterer and Napier may have kept the cockerel on a whim but I have read he travelled not only with the bird but also with a black spider in a small box, not normal behaviour.
The Scottish writer and translator Sir Thomas Urquhart, who, told of a demonstration of devastating artillery Napier devised against the threat of invasion by Spain.
"He gave proof upon a large plaine in Scotland to the destruction of a great many herds of cattel and flocks of sheep, whereof some were distant from other half a mile on all sides and some a whole mile,"
A well as being a wizard and mathematician Napier was also a fervent Protestant, much of his writing is vehemently anti-Catholic even by the standards of the time. He was a man of contradictions though, as he is said to have had friends who were Catholic, including Alexander Seton, the Earl of Dunfermline, although the vast majority Catholics back then had to hide their faith.
The last interesting, and worrying, fact I found out about John Napier is that his cause of death according to wiki he died "from the effects of gout" at home in Merchiston tower, now I suffer from gout and it is bloody painful but I didn't know it could kill you!

Spider-Man Day
How will you celebrate Spider-Man Day on August 1? It’s important to remember one thing: with great power comes great responsibility. Now, you, a Spider-Man fanatic, have all the power in the world to celebrate one of the most iconic comic-book superheroes of all time whichever way you want to, so don’t take this responsibility lightly. This is your gift and your curse!
Created by Steve Dikto and Stan Lee, Spider-Man is Marvel Comics most iconic character for the past 59 years. For all true fans of the web-slinger, August 1, 2023 is the day on which you can appreciate what Spider-Man has brought to your lives.
However, you chose to celebrate Spider-Man Day 2023 don’t forget to share your thoughts with us.
When is Spider-Man Day 2023?
“Spider-Man! Spider-Man! Friendly neighborhood Spider-Man!” is celebrated on Spider-Man Day on August 1, 2023.
History of Spider-Man Day
Everyone loves Spider-Man. And how can we not? Spider-Man entered the comic-book universe in issue 15 of Marvel Comics’ “Amazing Fantasy” in August 1962 and has been a major player ever since. The groundbreaking story caught the attention of readers when it featured an awkward, antisocial teenager as its superhero — a description typically associated with sidekicks. But this bold move turned out to be a boon for creator Stan Lee, who touched the hearts of a generation of kids who felt lonely, rejected, or had difficulty making friends. Spider-Man proved that anyone can be a superhero and, even after being around for about 60 years, he’s still as popular as ever.
Spider-Man got his own comic series, “The Amazing Spider-Man,” in March 1963. The titular character rose to popularity and quickly became integral in the ever-expanding Marvel Universe, engaging with regularly featured characters like the Human Torch, the Incredible Hulk, and Daredevil. The supporting characters in the Spider-Man world were equally interactive and colorful, enthralling readers who developed soft spots for them. This includes J. Jonah Jameson, the anti-Spider-Man editor-in-chief for the “Daily Bugle” newspaper, Spider-Man’s love interests Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson, and costumed villains like Doctor Octopus, the Green Goblin, and Venom.
Spider-Man became a fast-expanding franchise, his heroics no longer able to be contained in single monthly issues. Spidey’s frequent crossover storylines with other Marvel characters led to the creation of the bimonthly series “Marvel Team-Up” in March 1972, which ran for 150 issues. Spider-Man teamed up with nearly every high-profile superhero in the Marvel Universe in this ongoing series.
“Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man” was the fourth installment comic series of Spider-Man’s continuing adventures. It debuted in December 1976 and ended after 263 issues. One of the most memorable events of this era was Peter’s marriage to Mary Jane Watson.
We all know Spider-Man is fast, but his momentum in the comic world was soon noticed by Hollywood as well. Sony Entertainment purchased the rights to Spider-Man, and brought him to the big screen in May 2002 with the movie “Spider-Man.” With Tobey Maguire playing the friendly neighborhood superhero, the Spider-Man movies paved the way for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the superhero movie genre. “Spider-Man 2” was released in 2004 and broke box-office records, followed by “Spider-Man 3” in 2007, which ended Director Sam Raimi’s trilogy. The franchise was rebooted five years later, with “The Amazing Spider-Man” in 2012, starring Andrew Garfield.
Next, Spider-Man made his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the third act of “Captain America: Civil War” (2016). Young actor Tom Holland breathed life into the web-slinger, who had been neglected due to the ongoing legal issues and character rights between Sony Entertainment and Marvel Studios. The latest Marvel movies featuring Spider-Man are worldwide blockbusters “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018) and “Spider-Man: Far From Home” (2019).

Spider-Man Day Activities
Have a Spider-Man movie marathon
Throw a Spider-Man party
Parkour!
Depending how far back in time you want to go and which producers/directors you prefer, you could easily spend an entire day watching movie adaptations of Spider-Man comics. Perhaps you and your friends could watch and compare the latest releases, both Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man and discuss which version is better.
Invite your friends over, decorate the house and get the silly string web-slinging devices ready 'cause it’s party time! To really make your party stand out, try some Spidey-themed food like deviled eggs with paprika shaken into the shape of a spider. To keep the adults happy, try making the Spider-Man cocktail mixed with cherry and raspberry liqueurs, tequila and a sprinkling of pop rocks.
Ever wanted to leap and fly like Spider-Man? While swinging through New York City with a series of webs isn’t quite realistic, the growing trend of parkour can be done, right here and now. A mix of gymnastics and dancing, building up your parkour skills means flipping, sliding and jumping through the city just like Spidey.

your incentive to read to the bottom of this post is ✨Ben Vereen in a thong✨
In honor of yesterday being Good Friday and Easter being on Sunday, let me tell you about my current hyperfixation: Tim O’Horgans, original Broadway production of Jesus Christ Superstar.
This version is notoriously hated by Andrew Lloyd Webber- opening night being described as “the worst night of his life” but that’s only because even as a young man he was clearly a curmudgeon who hated fun.
This production is campy, it’s busy, and its clear it relies a lot on the spectacle pillar of theatre, but I love it nonetheless. my favorite version of JSC is the OBC recording consisting of: Jeff Fenholt as Jesus, Ben Vereen as Judas, Yvonne Elimen as Mary, Barry Dennin as Pilot, Bob Bingham as Caiaphus and Paul Ainsley as Herod. Some of the names you’ll recognize reprises their role for the 1973 movie.
I’m gonna tell you a few my of favorite fun facts/ things I noticed based on images and what I’ve read in Nassirs Rock Opera. Without further ado:
Overture: There are many descriptions of the overture, and they're very wild and I have no idea how to verbalize it. But I can tell you that Jesus rode in on a golden chalice with this opulent cape on lol.
You can learn more abt the staging for the overture here. The next pic is of him in his chalice chariot thing lol
Heaven on Their Minds: These are images of Judas and his tormentors. Now, Judas is usually played by a very strong actor, so a visual representation of what he’s going through isn’t really necessary, but I love the concept. They’re these hooded, shadow figures who follow him around and push him about on the stage. They chronically torment him and he fights them throughout the show until it’s time for his death where they lifthim up so he can get the rope to hang himself.
This Jesus Must Die: this one gets me really excited. So the High Priests are on this brige that’s meant to look like dinosaur fossils; and have you seen their costumes?? Like I have so many questions, this is such an interesting take. They keep their elaborate head pieces in the 1973 film, and they also give them a scaffold as a lair, but their costumes/set is so campy here. Really giving off Disney villain. Their part in the show received a lot of criticism because they’re portrayed kinda smarmy, and slinking in the shadows; the portrayal was deemed anti-semantic.
In the 1973 movie, they added the song “Then We are Decided,” between Caiaphus and Anna’s to portray a more human side to the Sanhedrin. That song is never performed, so you can imagine how well that went.
Hosanna
This is probably my least favorite song in the whole album but visually? I have no idea what's going on in this picture, but I love it. So it's a processional and the priests are watching from their lair. Apparently the props are supposed to look like microbes, and I know there was an insane thought process behind this, it's giving protozoa, amoeba realness. Like someone is carrying a giant set of dentures, can you find them?
Pilate's Dream
Costume Design for Pilate, and also Pilates Dream
The Temple: This is another wild one:
No Words, simply watch the Tony performance:
I Don’t Know How to Love Him:
She's so cute, I love her. This song was apparently one of the biggest applause of number, justifiably. I think one of the biggest complaints with this production as a whole, was the use of the gaudy mics. They're interesting. You can watch her performance at the tony's too.
Gethsemane: Apparently, Gethsemane was one of the biggest flops of the night, such a flop that people were laughing lol. It was staged with Jeff Fenholt, alone, center stage. There was this thing that dropped down behind him, O'Horgan dubbed 'The Universe Box'. It was suppose to look like Jesus was singing this song at the precipice of the universe with a galaxy of stars around him. In Rock Opera, Nassir refers to it as 'O'Horgans oversized toy', and there were several things that compared it to decorative boxes and toys from the 80's. I tried really hard to visualize this, because the concept of it sounds super cool. Instead, it looked silly to viewers and apparently Jeff Fenholt (who sings my favorite rendition of Gethsemane) didn't have the acting chops to pull away from the failure of the concept. YOU! DO! NOT! UNDERSTAND! THE! ANGST! I WENT! THROUGH! TO! GET! AN! IMAGE! OF !! THIS!!! DAMMED!!!!! BOX!!!!
Okay, I have to agree, it does look... strange and I would not have guessed it was supposed to represent the universe.
I'm not quite sure what is looks like. 💀💀
(I found the image from a person on TikTok! The account has lots of JCS OBC tidbits )
Pilate and Christ:
There was this really cool set piece that acted as the door to Pilates palace, it was ceasers head, and when the doors opened, it would expand to reveal 6 more eyes and pilate would sashay out lol.
King Herod
This number also got a lot of applause, it was definitely comedic relief, as Herod is often used for. Apparently he was wheeled in inside a giant, green dragons head and it opened to reveal him sitting in like a shell type thing. I'm still trying to find pictures of this prop- after finding the universe box, I am determined! He was in full drag with nails, the dress, the headdress and those fabulous platforms. Those platforms slay, btw.
Apparently there were a lot of high kicks and they did the Charleston lol.
Could We Start Again Please
There was some criticism about this songs placement in the show. This number was said to be not memorable at all because people were still reeling from the show Herod put on I think it's placed perfectly, because it kinda brings you back to the gravity of the situation. Had this song been placed before Herods Song, right after this Judas would hang himself. That's just too much too soon if you ask me. This provided a nice buffer, to settle down and get ready for the angst to come
Judas Death: Here are images of Judas' tormentors helping him take his life.
Trial With Pilate: Apparently this number flopped too. People said it was too long and the positioning of Dennen's mic caused him issues as his voice would cut in and out when he moved. Also, I have no idea what to make of the Roman guards costumes
I love the images of Barry Dennen going feral, pls best Pilate!!
Superstar: aaah,, the titular song. This was another stand out and y'all, If you thought Carl Andersons white fringe was extra? Any Judas getting bedazzled, wearing sparkles or glam during this song??? Yeah, none of that holds a Candle to Ben Vereen fucking coming out and performing this song in a gold thong. I can't make this shit up.
Now, I think this part is pretty cool. Jesus rises out of the ground wearing what's been dubbed 'the chrysalis'. It starts out thin, but each ensemble member grabs a pillar and spread the cape out across the stage. Judas sing this song on a butterfly set piece behind him. Okay metaphor 😩
For the opulence that was displayed throughout the entire show, the crucification was rather simple; he's simply stripped out of the 'chrysalis ' and put on a triangle.
Pls. Anyway. I love this show and we need a revival of this exact production! I'll wait until ALW expires and then find a producer lmfao 😌 There are a few updates that need to be made, but it is absolutely possible with todays technology?? Image updated gethsemane?? Tom O'Horgan your mind, sir!!!! Anyway. I love this production.
If you made it this far, thank you, I hope you now love this production as much as I do. 🫶🏾
