Amanda Marcotte at Salon:
After the Supreme Court ended federal abortion rights in 2022, there was a robust debate between pro- and anti-choice activists over whether or not banning abortion would kill women. Pro-choicers pointed to evidence, from both history and other countries, showing that abortion bans kill women. Anti-choice activists dismissed the record and pointed to toothless "exceptions" in abortion ban laws as "proof" that women could get abortions to save their lives.  The latter argument was frustrating not just because it was wrong but was generally offered in bad faith. Anti-abortion leaders know that abortion bans kill women. They don't care. Or worse, many view dying from pregnancy as a good thing. In some cases, it's viewed as just punishment for "sinful" behavior. Other times, it's romanticized as a noble sacrifice on the altar of maternal duty. But conservatives are aware that this death fetish cuts against their "pro-life" brand. So there was a lot of empty denials and hand-waving about the inevitable — and expected — outcome of women dying.
We now have another proof point that abortion bans are about misogyny, not "life," as the first deaths from red state abortion bans are being reported. Instead of admitting they were wrong and changing course, Republicans are behaving like guilty liars do everywhere, and destroying the evidence. In the process, they are also erasing data needed to save the lives of pregnant women across the board, whether they give birth or not.  ProPublica has published a series of articles detailing the deaths of women in Georgia and Texas under the two states' draconian abortion bans. They most recently reported the death of Porsha Ngumezi, a 35-year-old mother of two from Texas. Ngumezi suffered a miscarriage at 11 weeks but was left to bleed to death at the hospital, instead of having the failing pregnancy surgically removed. Multiple doctors in Texas confirmed that hospital staff are often afraid to perform this surgery, however, because it's the same one used in elective abortions. Rather than risk criminal charges, doctors frequently stand by and let women suffer — or die.  Ngumezi's youngest son doesn't fully understand that his mother is dead. ProPublica reported that he chases down women he sees in public who have similar hairstyles, calling for his mother.
A day after this story was published, the Washington Post reported that the Texas maternal mortality board would skip reviewing the deaths of pregnant women in 2022 and 2023 — conveniently, the first two years after the abortion ban went into place. The leadership claims it's about speeding up the review process, but of course, many members pointed out the main effect is that "they would not be reviewing deaths that may have resulted from delays in care caused by Texas’s abortion bans." This is especially noteworthy because it's become standard after one of these reports for anti-abortion activists to blame the victims and/or the doctors, and not the bans. Christian right activist Ingrid Skop, for instance, responded to Nguzemi's death by insisting "physicians can intervene to save women’s lives in pregnancy emergencies" under the Texas law. If she really believed that, however, she would desperately want the state maternal mortality board to review this, and other cases like it, so they could come up with recommendations for hospital staff to treat women without running afoul of the law. Strop, however, is on the Texas maternal mortality board. She was likely part of the decision to refuse to look into whether women like Nguzemi might be saved.
[...] But despite claims to be "pro-life," anti-abortion activists do not care. Instead, they are on Twitter griping about how comprehensive reproductive health care access "promotes sexual promiscuity."
Skop also argued last year that abortion bans are justified because "promiscuous behavior declines." It's tempting to point out that all five women whose deaths have been reported by ProPublica were in long-term relationships or marriages. Three of the five planned to bring their pregnancies to term and died because they were denied miscarriage care. But that's the problem with vague terms like "promiscuous." They draw us into debates about how much women are allowed to enjoy sex before their lives are forfeited. Or how many "good girls" should die to punish the "promiscuous" ones. That is the trap of misogyny. It allows women like Lila Rose or Ingrid Skop to pretend that, if you submit to the sexist order and obey all their arbitrary rules, you'll be saved. But these laws punish all women and girls: mothers and non-mothers, wives and single women, women who've had 100 partners and those who were virgins when raped. Abortion bans make crystal clear that, to the Christian right, no woman's life is worth saving. Anyone can be sacrificed, to protect their cruel patriarchal order.
Want more reason why abortion bans are bad for women? Republicans are working hard to destroy the evidence that abortion bans kill women.
Abortion bans have zip to do with the "sanctity of life", but are a tool for misogyny.

a trope that i hate is an empowered westernized asian woman who is "not like other girls" shaming asian women and girls who are into lolita or high femme subcultures. i watched the trailer for kim's convenience and i knew i wouldn't touch that show with a ten-foot pole when the daughter figure side-eyed her korean cousin dressed in a lolita-adjacent outfit. it infuriates me because the outfit and cousin's behavior was framed as cringe - framed as "non-western", foreign, "girly", and weird - while the tomboy main character is the "normal" asian that everyone can relate to. just say you don't know the non-conformist, anti-patriarchy, punk roots of lolita and femme subcultures in east asia and leave 😭😭😭

Hi! Given your experience working with marine mammals and intelligent views on cetacean captivity, I wanted to ponder the following. Here in the Netherlands is a cetacean (mostly porpoise) rescue organisation. After years of having no facilities, and having a 100% kill policy unless a porpoise could be returned straight away, they finally have a gorgeous rescue facility again.
Recently they announced the facility would be getting an outdoor expansion, featuring habitats emulating the Wadden Sea ecosystem. Providing both education about its inhabitants, as well as a place for late-stage rehab porpoises to spend their last weeks before release outside, in a larger habitat. And, in case an animal is non-releasable, provide an adequate space to hold them for while while next steps are being assessed.
The response was overwhelmingly negative. Most of their following is cetacean-smitten, but completely anti-cap (of the emotional, uninformed type). They all bristled at the idea that perhaps a few sharks and seals would be kept there "and then you'd be no better than a zoo!" (which is of course the worst thing to be). But mostly: the amount of people saying they would honestly rather see a non-releasable porpoise killed, because death is preferable to spending a single day in captivity ("because that is what I would want"), is frankly staggering. What do you say to these people??? A rescue facility is getting a beautiful outdoor expansion - GREAT! How can someone claim to love the animals so much when they would rather see them dead than in a situation that makes them personally uncomfortable? It just boggles my mind and frustrates me to no end.
Tl;dr: people want rescued porpoises dead because they might end up in captivity, and have you found an appropriate response to this ridiculous line of thinking?
Wow that's really amazing that the Netherlands is stepping up like that! It sounds like a great option for rehab and also to provide much needed education about porpoises to the public.
Honestly my response to those people is pretty much what you said: "Why do you want to see these animals dead just because it makes you personally unhappy to see them in human care?"
I think it's important to call out these comments as what they are: advocating for the death of animals. It's not noble, it's people projecting their own guilt complexes (of something they have no control) over onto animals.
And that is what a lot of anti captivity propaganda relies on - shame and guilt. That's what I remember when I was starting to allow myself to learn more about SeaWorld after being so convinced by Blackfish for a long time. I felt a hollow shame feeling in my chest as if being curious about how killer whales are trained was somehow wrong or bad.
Activist marketing (especially The Dolphin Project and anything from Naomi Rose, Lori Marino and Ingrid Visser) is about making you feel bad for even considering going to marine parks or learning more about cetaceans in human care. As if it would genuinely make a difference on things like Taiji or improve the lives of the animals in any way (it won't and it looks like it's only making things worse at this point)
A lot of these activists have massive egos and savior complexes that are fed by this sort of marketing. As if their snarky comment on Facebook is going to make a difference.
At the end of the day, they're people that have to make zero personal sacrifice (going to a marine park is not a hard thing to do for them) to feel a sense of moral superiority. And that's very reinforcing and feels good.
If you calmly give them the facts about cetacean welfare in human care and tell them exactly what they're advocating for (death or poor welfare)- it may not change their mind (because that's not how our brains work) but it may convince the people reading the comment thread.

I don't know what it is about this week, but I've been on a massive "I hate Ingrid" mood
I've gradually gotten more sour about her and her terribly addressed racism and I've reached peak "god, your existence sickens me"
I've come and gone about how I feel about her. On one hand, the writing about her family situation and belief of what knighthood is proved to be really entertaining and fleshed out.
On the other hand, the times she stumbles into food obsession and, as you said, the poorly written Duscur racism just plain sucks. They make sense (her family's lack of money and crops turned her into a foodie who values getting meals at all and I guess there needed to be one anti-Duscur Faerghus character), but making sense doesn't auto translate to well written, entertaining, or handled appropriately.
More than any other game, 3H is in the extreme where it has supports that are golden and supports that are just plain hot air.

Good evening!
Fitness anon here with my review of the weekend and some questions as well…
When will everyone put 2 and 2 together on the other side of the street and understand that these sightings are all about business?
A man who repeatedly says publicly that he is protecting his loved ones at all costs,  drags three women into the public eye in 6 months. Whose identities have been revealed here within minutes without much effort.
And S yesterday tried to attract too much attention by overacting that you almost felt sorry for him and wanted to shout "You can stop, we've all seen it!“
If you didn't know that S makes his money with acting, you wouldn't believe it after all these bad performances.
And his „dates“ so far in 2024 are all women who earn their money by showing off their assets on social media.  One of them even constantly advertises herself and her stuff during her holiday abroad and thanks her followers several times for using her codes. And the recent one sharing that she was struggling due to personal difficulties. Add her over-the-top intimacy which seemed hilarious.
Sounds like genuine love stories!? Already creating new couple name hashtags. Think again…
Dear (returning) Fitness Anon,
I have nothing to add to your excellent summing up, as usual. And after what transpired about her interactions with those Antis, on Instagram DMs, I think it's a secondary plotline that could be toyed with for a (short) while, then quietly dropped off. Precedents exist.
The women have always been all sorts of wannabes. Think just about 2024: Fitness Wannabe. Fashion Wannabe -cum - Prostitute. And now Journalist Wannabe (if that woman is a journo, I am Ingrid Bergman).
That is very cheap, darling. And that is a very shabby (not even chic) coverup effort.
Makes me remember that very witty Ashkenazi proverb: 'I am too poor to buy cheap things'. Because of course, whatever is cheap is ultimately horribly expensive.

The infuriating part of having pretty neutral opinions in general but still having the urge to disagree with anyone and everyone no matter what they think or if I'd agree with them normally, really is that I know how they could beat me but they don't. I keep winning discussions or at least come to a mutual agreement by the end but I never really reach the conclusion that I'm wrong just solely from the other person's argument.
And that's not because I'm just so good at discussions or am just on the right side of the disagreement. It's because so many people try to take apart good arguments, which they mostly fail at, instead of making their own point.
Take Ingrid for example. I hate her but objectively speaking, I see that people can easily see themselves in her since she's a pretty basic character. Good for them. So instead of trying to say that it's not racist to say that children, medics, non-combatants in general deserve to be slaughtered just for living in the same place as a select group of people who have wronged you, you can tell me that Ingrid has ambiguous character development in her support with Dedue that can be read as a "you're different from the other black people" but can also be seen as her recognizing that her own prejudices are bad. That argument would be further supported if you look at other translations of the support. Most are as ambiguous as the English one but the Spanish translation for example clearly has Ingrid go through a redemptive arc not only concerning Dedue but the people of Duscur in general.
But most Ingrid lovers don't bring that argument to the table because they're not trying to convince you or have an open discussion, they just want to prove you wrong.
It's so sad to see, since communicating and listening to other people, is so important, especially if they have an opinion that differs from your own

Jessica Valenti at Abortion, Every Day:
They are killing us. I don’t know any other way to put it. Yeniifer Alvarez-Estrada Glick. Candi Miller. Amber Nicole Thurman.  And now,  Josseli Barnica—a 28-year old mother, whose smiling face in a selfie she took with her daughter made me weep as soon as I read ProPublica’s headline: “A Texas Woman Died After the Hospital Said It Would be a ‘Crime’ to Intervene in Her Miscarriage.”
Josseli died in 2021, before Roe was overturned but after Texas passed SB 8. Even though she was miscarrying at just 17 weeks into her pregnancy with no chance for the fetus’ survival, doctors told Josseli they couldn’t treat her while there was still a heartbeat. By the time her Houston hospital intervened, she had spent two days with a fetus pressed up against her open cervix, exposing her to bacteria. Josseli died of a preventable infection three days later.  I am heartbroken, but more than that I am just so angry. I am angry that this young beautiful woman is dead. I am angry that her now-4 year-old daughter will grow up without a mother. I am angry that we have to live in a country where our lives are treated as disposable. And I am really, truly furious about what I know will come next.  Anti-abortion groups will rush to send out tweets and press releases with phony condolences, insisting that Texas’ law allows life-saving care. They will blame doctors for not acting quickly enough, the hospital for not giving providers clear enough guidance—even pro-choicers for scaring’ doctors out of treating patients. Anything to shirk blame and to wash the blood off their hands.
We cannot let that happen.  When Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America comes out with a statement promising that abortion bans protect women, I want you to remember that they lobbied against exceptions for women’s lives. When the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG) claims that Josseli should have been given care, remember that the ‘care’ they’re referring to isn’t an abortion—but a forced c-section or vaginal labor. That’s because these groups believe abortion is never necessary to save a person’s life. They use language and push for laws accordingly.  Most of all, I want us to remember—and for all Americans to know—that these organizations and legislators knew this would happen. They knew women would suffer and die as a result of their laws and decided to pass them anyway. There is no press release or talking point that can paper over that truth: they decided our deaths were an acceptable trade-off for a political win.
When I say that the anti-abortion movement planned for deaths like Josseli’s, I mean it literally. In October 2022, I warned that conservatives had launched a preemptive messaging campaign to blame doctors and abortion rights activists for women’s deaths. Today, two full years later, we’re watching Republicans insist that it’s not bans endangering women, but pro-choice “misinformation” about the laws.  They didn’t just plan to avoid responsibility for our deaths, though—they planned to cover them up. There is a reason that Republicans are disbanding maternal mortality review committees, or stacking them with anti-abortion activists. In Texas, where Josseli was killed, Republicans put a well-known extremist on the state's maternal death board just a few months ago: Ingrid Skop has made a career out of arguing that maternal mortality statistics can’t be trusted and that abortion bans won’t lead to maternal deaths.
Jessica Valenti wrote in Abortion, Every Day that the anti-abortion movement is gaslighting the people about the deaths caused by strict abortion bans such as Amber Nicole Thurman and Josseli Barnica.

In an alternate universe if bb was not injured and joined Lucy and Keira in Barcelona there will be no stopping fcb femeni and England. And also Alexia's headache😂
bb would join barça after she absolutely destroyed them in a CL game with ease... she nutmegged Alexia, outdribbled Aitana and rainbow-chipped ona, lucy and Ingrid before she mocked cata and went for top right even if she preferred top left...
mapí went absolutely mental when the news broke that bb will join Barcelona while Alexia just groaned and immediately went on Amazon to order the big pack anti-headache pills...
Lucy promise ale to keep bb under control and the first thing bb did is moving Ales out of her cubicle to the other side between pina and Mapí... just because she can and she knows it'll annoy Alexia to no end...

public/private knowledge
Public Knowledge
Leon Scott Kennedy is a nationally recognized agent occasionally assigned to the US President's security detail.
He's a survivor of the Raccoon City Incident.
He saved Ashley Graham, daughter of former President Graham from a cult in 2004, and is considered a "Hero".
He is a founding and high ranking member of the Division of Security Operations.
Private Knowledge
Leon's official codified orders are federally recognized and have been since 2002 under Anti-Virus Weapons Protocol No. 7600. It authorizes him to act on behalf of national security separate from military operations. He takes full advantage of this protocol to make decisions about what to do next. This is a position of service but also an extreme position of potentially rogue power.
Leon was involved in Operation Javier, and took Manuela Hidalgo into protective custody in 2002.
His F.O.S. Point of Contact and Handler is Ingrid Hunnigan. They have been partners since 2004.
Leon was coerced into the position of special agent for the United States by Adam Benford, who was a CIA agent then.
He's considered a mutant, due to complications with Las Plagas after 2004, and that has also locked him into specific healthcare providers, necessary procedures, and biological disposal options postmortem. He's paid significantly less than he should be paid because of legislature that was passed regarding B.O.W. mutations and he absolutely refuses to fill out paperwork to acquiesce to the law. He'll take the pay cut.
Leon took a chip containing evidence of treason that formed the groundwork of the DSO in 2005. It's a very well kept secret of his.
Leon was sent on a mission to the small country of Daijoon in 2009, where he fought a BOW species that the local populous called "Demons". He took a mission from the country's Prince exile after his own mission was fruitless, to burn a BOW "Tree of Life" that had fallen into the hands of a rich foreigner. He was successful in this mission.
A year later, he got placed into the Eastern Slav Republic on a search and apprehend/destroy mission for the "Beekeeper" of the Plaga Parasite being used there.
Leon killed President Adam Benford during a banquet in Tall Oaks University, Tall Oaks, after Adam had succumbed to C-Virus.
He made the decision to hunt and kill Derek Simmons after their first phone conversation.
Leon was involved with the routing of A-Virus in Manhattan, and successfully helped rescue Rebecca Chambers from Glenn Arias. It wasn't his finest moment.
Leon was called to Alcatraz afterwards, and assisted the BSAA in taking care of the remnants of the outbreak there, and apprehending his suspect.
There are other outbreaks he has handled in the backdrop, and his schedule is always changing.
Leon Kennedy is a Delta-32 gene carrier, making him one of the naturally immune people to Tyrant Virus. He was bitten/exposed several times in Raccoon City and didn't turn.

Felix
"I fucking hate my dad" "why? Is it cause he didn't accept you being queer/trans?" "No, he was cool with that. He's just fucking annoying."
"Ingrid, what the hell, I'm literally trans. You know this. We've been friends since we were in diapers." "Oh. I forgot." "YOU FORGOT!?"
Wasian. (tw sui joke) @ Dimitri and Sylvain "stop joking about killing yourself--you're appropriating my culture, assholes."
Secret Olivia Rodrigo fan. He only listens to her music on youtube + incognito mode. Only Annette knows. Annette manages to get them concert tickets were they run into Lysithea.
Ashe
Spider-Man stan on main. Somehow he convinces Dedue to be his Ned Leeds to his Peter Parker for Halloween
He knows Ingrid would like the MCU if she watched it, but she's scared of needing to watch 10000 movies
*slaps Ashe's back* You can pack so much anxiety in this guy
Started school in the middle of the year because he's a foster kid. Rumors started spread about him being a harden criminal because he went to juvie. He keeps tries to correct them and say he's never been but Caspar keeps fueling the rumors
"Caspar! Stop telling people I went to juvie! That never happened!" "...You... lied to me? :(" "You made it up!" "Oooh. Right."

I really don't have any time or respect for people who call themselves marine mammal scientists while acting as lobbyists and continuously misleading the general public about marine mammal welfare.
Animal welfare is a relatively new scientific field - especially in cetaceans. It's really only in the last few decades that we've been actively studying and determining welfare parameters in dolphins and whales.
That said, we have scientists like Dr. Isabella Clegg, Dr. Jason Bruck, Dr. Heather Hill, Dr. Kelly Jaakkola, Dr. Kathleen Dudzinski, Dr. Fabienne Delfour and many other incredible scientists, research fellows and facilities contributing amazing welfare data.
Not to mention the fantastic global Cetacean Welfare Study
We're learning how to study welfare, what good welfare and bad welfare looks like, what affects welfare the most, monitoring welfare acoustically, comparing parameters to wild animals, what is actually the best habitat for these animals and so much more.
Yet you have people like Dr. Naomi Rose, Dr. Lori Marino and Dr. Ingrid Visser who claim that "the science is settled" on cetacean welfare. That we don't need to do anymore research, show's over, nothing to see here. Tank bad, sanctuary good, don't look at over there at the actual research, trust us - we're the scientists.
That's why I get so frustrated when I see people uncritically use these scientist's sources. Or any sort of anti cap media who take their word as gospel, regurgitate Blackfish talking points and deliberately mislead with emotive, anthropomorphic language.
I can't understand why, when presented with the notion that these animals may not be suffering, that the response is anger.
Why? When I realised that the orcas at SeaWorld were living a much better life than what was portrayed in Blackfish I felt relief! I was happy to see the high energy enrichment and training session videos.
I was happy when I travelled all the way to Orlando from Australia and spent hours and hours at SeaWorld at the underwater viewing area. I asked questions and I watched the orcas rest, play and engage in sessions. I was excited about the idea of being apart of this world and getting to work with animals using positive reinforcement and prioritising welfare.
Tumblr media
Little did I know that only in a few years I'd be networking with those amazing welfare scientists and working with dolphins! I don't expect others to have the same journey I did, but I hope some of what I post can make a difference in changing how people perceive cetacean welfare.
There's a lot more we need to learn and study but a lot of the current data is pointing to positive/neutral welfare states in cetaceans in human care. I hope more will be published on orcas - a lot of the data is in bottlenose dolphins (which is probably why lobbyists aren't targeting them in legislation as much anymore).
Cetacean welfare is in no way a settled science, so be very wary of sources that claim it is or make uncritical claims about "captivity".
