actually hold on. even better. unrequited destiel au where dean feels like he Has to be with cas once he’s out of the empty. because how else is he supposed to respond to that? “no thanks cas sorry you died for me but i don’t swing that way.” so he forces himself back into a familiar pattern, chokes himself to death to fit his role, and the thing is that Cas is happy, Dean’s a damn good conman when he needs to be. He did this with Lisa for a year, how hard could it be to keep it up again for however long he has left to live? It’s for Cas, and Cas gave everything for him, it’s only fair.

Of course, this whole charade is killing dean anyway. trying to remember what to say, when to say it, letting cas across boundaries he doesn’t want breached so that cas feels fulfilled while dean feels suffocated. the performance collapses in on itself. dean can’t do it. and in the end, he’s still himself, and he’ll tell himself he ruined it even when the truth is that he never should have started doing it in the first place.

After a beautiful omega saves him from an alpha who believes having an alpha voice makes him king, Dean's inner omega is left swooning. The college is so big though, and he has no idea who the other omega is, so he assumes that is going to just be the end of that and he'll never get another chance to talk to the omega, who for a moment made him feel so safe.

"Oh, hello again," a familiar voice said, the silky gravel sending a shiver of pleasure down Dean's spine.

"Hey," he said, somewhat breathlessly, once again face to face with the omega who had saved him. He was frozen in place, his thoughts spinning uselessly. His inner omega was swooning, like an omega in a fairy tale seeing their knight in shining armor, while the logical part of Dean was trying to decide if he was thankful about getting a chance to see the other omega again, or pissed about Charlie meddling.

"I'm glad to see you're okay," the other omega—what had Charlie called him? Casper? It was definitely Cas- something. Caspian?—said with a smile that was fond and kind and enough to send butterflies spiraling through Dean's stomach. This was insane. He'd barely had one conversation with the guy, he should not be being this pathetic around him, even if he was the most beautiful guy Dean had ever seen, with a scent that Dean wanted to drown in to boot.

"Yeah, I'm glad about that too. And that you're okay too. I was a bit worried. Though clearly you can look after yourself." He paused awkwardly, trying to remember where that sentence had been supposed to go. "I can look after myself too, normally. When biology isn't fucking me over." He rubbed the back of his neck, hoping that if he laughed a little bit no one would think he was going insane. "What I'm trying to say is thank you. You didn't need to put yourself in danger for me, but you really saved my bacon."

Not Part of the Plan by Annie D (scaramouche) [NC-17, 317k] - yes, it looks a little bit long but the verse has 7 parts; first two are rather short and give you a good insight into what’s to come - unreliable narrator (Cas POV), political intrigues, mutual pining, well written smut, domestic fluff, angst, reunions, and ultimate power couple Dean and Cas. My favorite fic from my favorite author when I need a Cas fic fix! 

If this seems too long, try other fics by Annie D - Should’ve Just Asked (rich Dean AU), What Has Eight Tentacles and Isn’t Allowed to Eat Pie? (bunker fic with octopus Dean, sweet and T rated), The Parts of Our Sum (scifi), Convenient Husbands (creature!cas, hunter Dean, fandom favorite). Or any other of her shorter fics.

Passing Ships by quiettewandering [M, 78k] - a lovely anti-soulmates AU fic where Cas is a Cupid, and Dean and Lisa is unlucky couple he’s to get together. No worries, Lisa is great but not in a relationship with Dean. 

Through the Mists of Time by LoveIsNotAVictoryMarch [NC-17, 17k] - time travel harlequin fic! Alternating POV and very lovely characterization of Dean and Cas. Don’t miss the time stamp, it is also very good. I also very muchenjoyed  it’s a lot like life fic by this author. It’s a historical AU with Dean and Cas in master/ servant positions and dabbling with dom and sub dynamics. If that is your jam, very highly recommended! 

This Isn’t Where We Intended to Be by PorcupineGirl [NC-17, 14k] - bunker fic with fallen Cas, soft Dean and clueless Sam. I really loved Cas’ characterization here - he’s not bitter or angry. He’s just so sweet? And then Cas and Dean do that awkward dance around each other they do so well. 

The Ghosts of Blackthorn Hall by linoresearch [NC-17, 94k] - destiel and Jane Eyre fusion, Cas POV, historical AU. Absolutely loved it! It’s great if you know the original, and it’s great if you don’t. Pies and Prejudice by the same author is a modern day AU fusion with J Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. It’s a Dean’s POV, so Cas is a bit scarce here, but if you are a fan of original book and BBC miniseries, this is a must read.

dean and cas let sam “babysit” jack one time to have a date night (dean pretending this whole situation isn’t hell for him and trying to make cas happy, cas hiding in the bathroom wondering why he feels like shit when he’s supposed to be happily married) and jack bursts into his adult body as sam is carrying him back to the car, the moment cas and dean stopped looking, and sam nearly falls over because of it. and then jack crawls into the backseat of sam’s car and curls up and starts asking him if he’s unloveable as he is, why they want a baby more than they want him, trying not to cry because he thinks that’ll just make him look more like a child as he vents his frustration at being treated like one. and everything clicks into place as sam realizes just how much trouble they’re having in paradise.

Let Jack do some biting and exploding as a little treat. He needs it for enrichment in his environment! Alternatively this is his “hormone driven teen age rebellion/angst” phase. Or he’s threatening to run away and live with Sam.

Assuming you’re referencing my anti-domestic destiel au: yeah 🥰 jack is in just the worst situation here, and he put himself there, sure, he agreed to it, thought it would be okay. but crucially, to me, he also thought it was temporary. and that the love he would experience as Dean & Cas’s actual baby wouldn’t differ that much from what he gets as himself. And when it actually is different, when they treat him different, (maybe there’s more kindness in Dean when he’s holding someone that looks more like a child, maybe Castiel’s more attentive and knows how to handle him better because after all, he planned, he took classes, for a baby) that’s rough! horrible and frustrating!

and since they’re all pretending this is fine and makes them happy, he spends more time than he should playing along and feeling worse and worse about himself. I think things should start breaking around him. His toys all crack and twist into terrible shapes. Blood stains show up on his baby blankets. He cries and glass shatters. (He’s trying so hard to keep it in, but it’s not working, he’s upset and he doesn’t even have an outlet to talk about it or anything because Dean and Cas are fully treating him like the toddler he’s taken the shape of.)

I really think Sam would be his saving grace here because Sam is a reprieve from having to keep up that appearance and act. Sam treats Jack as his son, yes, but also as an adult, because that is what Jack is, fast growth cycle and odd birthday count or not. He doesn’t want to be a child. The window for that has passed. He’s grown up.

(I swear that Jack’s part in this isn’t just me being frustrated with his literal infantilization in popular fanon as a character who’s very obviously (to me, anyway) coded as autistic. I swear. It’s not all that. Just. Most of it.)

Jack running away with Sam would be such a way to kick off the falling apart of this “perfect” life that Dean and Castiel have constructed. Their son up and fucking leaves, goes to live with Sam because he can’t stand how neither of them look at him and actually see who he is rather than who they’d prefer him to be. Maybe jumpstarts a few realizations about the fact that they aren’t seeing each other truthfully either, that they’re both miserable and need to split up before they lose their friendship that’s so important to them as well.

(and of course, for extra drama, Jack should burn their house down. What better way to signify that the Normal Apple Pie Life is coming to an end then a housefire. Dean walks in to check on Jack during the night and instead of a baby, there’s Jack standing there next to his small bed, eyes burning gold and neither of them can say anything before the whole room explodes into flame. (Which Jack is very upset about. He didn’t mean that to happen. (He’s glad that it did.) He just lost control.)

but also just in general even outside of this au, jack should be allowed to bite people <3 it’s good for him <3 he gets his bloodthirsty urges to tear out people’s throats from his dad! (sam)

even funnier if this au is one where mary is alive and watching all of it happen and like. yes she knows its going to crash and burn like it did for her, inevitably, but dean is an adult who can make his own choices and it’s not her job to fix his life for him. sam plans for how to break dean and cas up while mary plans for how to cushion dean’s fall when he figures it out himself. (her cushioning might be too little, too stiff, not positioned right, but she builds it anyway as best she can. because at least he won’t end up on any ceilings, right?)

it’s lisa and ben 2.0 but with cas and jack instead and worse this time because sam isn’t even dead, sam’s alive but dean keeps cutting him out of the picture to make his life with cas work (remembering how quickly he left lisa to go back to sam, knowing that the only way he can make himself choose anyone else over his brother is to push sam as far away as possible and hope that sam picks someone else first.) (which doesn’t work because again. sam broke up with eileen months ago and isn’t looking for anyone else.)

happy endgame of anti domestic destiel au is that dean and cas both move back into the bunker, and dean is allowed to have the time with sam he needs to feel like himself, and jack is treated like the adult he’s grown into, and cas allows himself to go back to having a life outside of dean (maybe starts getting angels back from the empty with jack? gives them a chance at a life unmanipulated by chuck and a chance to live in peace on earth if they want?)
