After being inspired by Kj's Band AU months back, I have decided to also throw my hat into the rink! (👉ﾟヮﾟ)👉

I only have Narinder and Leshy's streetwear designed so far, but anyways!! Lore drop time YYYYEAAAAH

An Eternal Vessel for a Voice AU ( Bishops ):

Legally recognized foster family, all used to live in one house until a few years prior to the current timeline

Shamura the eldest sibling, estimated 35 yrs old, is the founder of their own rapidly growing tech company. They used to be a super popular anonymous producer online but retired to pursue the challenge of technological innovations + support their siblings as the main breadwinner of the family

Kallamar (30-ish) used to work at a private clinic as a doctor and also supported the household, but has since parted from the household to watch over Heket

Heket at her early twenties is currently touring the lands and is a well-renowned vocalist known for her deep and powerful growls and control (think Ado!); doesn't want to return home just yet in order to heal from the rift caused by a certain event

Leshy (18) is still a high schooler on his last year; one of those 'stupidly smart without studying' type of kids who has too much free time on his hands and uses it to indulge himself in art and anime weeb stuff HAHAHA he got gifted a drawing tablet by Kallamar for his birthday and has been obsessed in exploring the art medium

Narinder (24) finished college a few years back, but a certain event made him a social shut-in for a while, taking care of the house now instead and being the only sibling Leshy loves to constantly annoy since Shamura often comes home late and barely has time to stay for the weekends. He has a great passion for music producing thanks to Shamura's influence growing up and has been using his spare time at home to hone his craft and post his work online

They all have social media accs Twitter Narinder and Leshy's mascots / pfps uses their crowns; Leshy is actually the artist for many of Narinder's album covers and music videos and is often seen bantering online on the TL even if they're literally in the same house most of the time 💀

This one is just self-indulgent and projecting but Narinder loathes the idea of socializing in order to collab with other online musicians so he forced himself to learn how to play the piano so that he could just use VSTs (virtual instruments) instead to cover all other parts his songs would need BWAHAHAHA ( I wish I knew how to play piano for the same reason :') )

Adding onto here some more Nari and Leshy-specific hcs:

Magic doesn't exist in this Modern AU, so Narinder's eyes are an olive green, and his third eye has been replaced with an oddly symmetrical scar he got from an accident years back

Leshy's social media handle (@chervx888_) is based on the romanized spelling of worm in Russian, while all the 8's are meant to represent a lot of eyes

Leshy has once bursted into Narinder's room, phone in hand, to proclaim with his volume turned up to eleven: "BRO, BABY GRONK JUST CALLED OUT THE RIZZLER TO FIGHT HIM IN THE BOXING RING"

Leshy is really REALLY nearsighted but refuses to wear the prescription glasses he was given since it looks "uncool" to his classmate friend group consisting of the Darkwood mini bosses

12. Do you have a playlist for the character? What songs do you associate with them and why?

I've answered a music lists ask before! (and really need to make proper playlists eventually lol), but only gave vague reasonings I'll add more to here.

-Anthea has more indie to kinda sad songs because despite giving off a playful vibe they're pretty melancholic behind the mask. A smile is a way they brush off how they're actually feeling, and from Crane Wives to Vocaloid I get that sort of vibe-happy or at least catchy songs that are actually sad when you pay attention between the lines. -Narinder's got progressive metal/rock since he's pretty depressed in my AU. He also has a bit of a bleeding heart where he loves fiercely only to get hurt which I've noticed is a trend in Sleep Token or sometimes Starset songs. -Aym and Baal got Nightcore and Vocaloid mostly because they're kids and back when I was like their age of 11-ish that's also what I was starting to get into. Aym is more edgy cause he's got a little bit of a temper, while Baal leans more happy since the kid's pretty positive.

17. Are there any motifs or symbols associated with the character? How are they represented, in their design, personality or in some other way?

Anthea I associate with the '13th Hour' since when I think of Crimson Angel's vessels, I place them on a clock face, with each one counting down to the final in the center. The last vessel, the last sheep, the last one to try and free Death, the 'Unlucky Thirteen'. But contrary to my usual character design you actually don't see that on Anthea, their base outfit is a little bit generic and I'm thinking of redesigning it for their post-bishop/reconciliation era to help differentiate their starting look from the end, I designed them prior to really realizing how big this'd get so Anthea needs a little updating. I do however lean into a slight renaissance era inspiration for the AU, since I associate that with both religion and 'memento mori' (remember death) via its paintings.

19. What is your general favorite thing about the character? What is your least favorite?

Hm...I guess one major thing is that Anthea's an adult? My other protagonist OC, Chrysa, is 16 with her main party allies being between 16.5-21, while Anthea's 26-29+. They're more mature and experienced in ways Chrysa isn't, they got wildly different backgrounds, Chrysa's shyer while Anthea's more extroverted, and yet they're similar in both being people struggling to find a reason to live and to understand that they gotta live for themselves. It's fun having another protagonist to work with who's a little more aware of their environment for a change, as opposed to a teenager trying to learn how to understand it. The least favorite though is their legs. I hate drawing the digitigrade legs and need to practice more, they're super hard to pose. T_T

20. Bonus question: share any additional thoughts, art, favorite scenes, anything you've been waiting for a chance to ramble about

Anthea has very much risen FAST in my favorite OCs list, to where I kinda wanna include their counterpart as a side-character in my OCs world with counterparts to Narinder and the twins. Not copy pasted, besides Anthea I would change their names and they'd all just be normal mortals, but since I've kinda made these 4 OCs in a way anyway why not bring them in. (Hey I'm building these characters up, might as well use them to replace some of the cardboard side-characters I've had doing nothing plot-relevant for years.)

It's obvious but Narinder is very much a simp for the lamb, like he started falling fast and HARD like a year and a half or so into Anthea's vesselship. Anthea's fall was slower but simmering in the background, and it was only after Narinder said he refused to leave the Gateway without them initially that they finally realized it.

And lastly I did NOT expect these characters or this AU to get this far, but I'm so, SO grateful it did. Post-graduating college it felt as if all my friends just vanished because we all got so busy, and while we try to chat and stuff I was getting really lonely, especially as I struggled to find work. Like I didn't really know what I was doing as the days bled together. Yet since joining, this fandom's let me meet so many wonderful, amazing people though, and I am extremely grateful for that.

Back to your first lines, I have though about making some mini stories out of things Crowley and Silver AU! 🥹 I’m just…unfortunately impatient when it comes to comics because I’m always stumped with composition 🤣 but I’d like to try since I need the practice!

Another silly AU I had in mind would be a Fairy-Godfather-Crowley and Lilia basically being passive aggressive over “custody” over Silver- but they’re both oblivious to time/life spans and inadvertently raise him together 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 I imagine there’s a big canon divergence to how baby silver was discovered in the first place, leading to all this nonsense. But Silver is genuinely just vibing 👍 I imagine the bickering being on the same level to Flora and Merryweather -v-

Actually, I feel like I don’t really have an AU yet where Crowley is “just some guy” instead of a Headmasyer ANCHHF 🤔🤔🤔 I’m just rambling now- but trust that I have another self indulgent AU up my sleeves soon. Twelve days of Sinsmas (3)

While my introducton to the seven deadly sins was through American TV shows, a lot of people rather first discovered them through Japanese media... It can sound weird, but Japanese storytellers and creators are quite obsessed with the seven deadly sins, using them a LOT.

The most famous case being the Homonculus from the manga "Fullmetal Alchemist", each shaped after and reflecting a specific sin. Plus they come in two variations, with the original set (from the manga, adapted in the second anime) and the alternative set created for the first anime, back when the manga was still ongoing and thus they had to come up with additional Homonculus.

Quite massive to, though very Internet-oriented, there is the "Evillious Chronicles" multimedia franchise, a dozen series of Vocaloid songs creating a larger world which spanned a handful of light novel series, several mangas, many stage shows... And which is heavily centered around the seven deadly sins, with its core series being literaly "The Seven Deadly Sins series".

Today, you also CANNOT escape the series Nanatsu no Taizai, because its translated title is literaly "The Seven Deadly Sins", reinvented as a disbanded group of seven legendary knights evolving in a weird fantasy-land inspired by the Arthuriana. (Loosely inspired, mind you)

Of course, manga being manga, anime being anime, there is a large wave of works where the deadly sins are the basis for a group of young (perhaps underage) sexy (for those who like anime girls) exclusively female characters... This goes from Umineko's Seven Sisters (or Stakes) of Purgatory...

... to "Seven Mortal Sins", about female (of course big-breasted) demons embodying the seven deadly sins (plus additional vices lost to time and the Church's updates)

If you want for a bit of male depiction to balance things in the world of "Let's take a random concept and make it fuckable sexy", you have the seven demon brothers of "Obey Me!", all based on the demon-princes supposedly in charge of the deadly sins.

Back to the good ol' classics of anime and manga, the seven deadly sins also were an entire arc of "Soul Eater". The Book of Eibon's arc, about the titular grimoire, a supernatural somewhat sentient tome which propuls its reader into pocket-dimensions, with each "chapter" of the Book confronting them to one of the seven deadly sins they must overcome...

There is a LOT to unpack with Japanese media, so I will keep the rest for another day, but I will conclude here with a little obscure but cult anime that mixes the weirdness, the bizarre, the humor, the unsettling sexuality and... poop jokes too. I am talking about the famous, or infamous, "You are being summoned, Azazel". A very... strange piece of dark humor/slice of life manga about caricatural humans summoning dreadful demons from Hell, only for them to take the appearance of cute plushies, and then the humans beat the crap out of the plushies while the demons insult everybody and are dirty pervs. It is... a very Japanese piece of media.

And the reason it appears here is because the main and recurring demons of the series correspond to specific deadly sins, with the titular Azazel being a lust demon, and his sidekick Beelzebub a gluttony demon.

Wip of my unit leaders! I hope their personalities shine through their poses :)

The main Main leader is a vocaloidP. She is looking for people to make music with in the main story, and she wants to share her feelings with the world through vocaloid songs. I don't have a name for her yet unfortunately. I chose this theme for the main unit because I don't think actual producers of vocaloid are integrated very well into the story even though the themes of the game are very exclusive to Vocaloid culture

The second unit leader is Tanba Kana. She's an optimistic girl with passion for baking. Her unit's theme is baking, and in particular sweets. I noticed that all the units were focused on a type of art and I though "hey. What about FOOD art..." and this happened! My main inspiration for the unit members was Pretty Cure character archetypes, so their names all contain a colour. Unfortunately pink doesn't have a Japanese word so I had to go for red for Kana lmao

The third leader is Isobe Utaha. She's confident and a bit of a tomboy. She is as you might expect a singer in Vivid Street! Her unit consists of childhood friends who all grew up there, and have always dreamed of surpassing RAD BLAST. I was kinda hesitating to add this kinda unit, but I thought it could be cool to have another generation try to surpass another legendary night. It'll be hard to write something unique for them but it's a challenge I'm willing to take on :)

The fourth unit leader is Nakama Hikari! I've finally decided on her being the leader. I've already posted about her but I'll explain more about the unit. Her unit's theme is creation of art and having fun with it. The inspiration for this unit was actually found family, as I thought a unit like that would be cool. Though the found family aspect has definitely taken a backseat as I wanna focus on how online friendship affects people positively :)

The fifth and last unit leader is Nose Akira. They're a hikikomori and a weird case of gender, as nobody can tell what it is. Akira is a videogamer, and the unit's theme is videogames as well. The unit all meet in an arcade and love rhythm games :). They all have dreams of working in the videogame industry in their own way

🎼In the early days of the Vocaloid beta project, a team of talented developers and musicians worked tirelessly to create new synthetic voices that could sing with a quality and emotion never seen before. Among these creations was "Charmine", a vocaloid with a unique and charming voice, destined to be one of the stars of the show.

🎼Charmaine was created with the voice of a talented singer whose voice was so unique that it promised to make Charmaine a resounding success, a star in the world of vocaloids. However, before Charmaine and the first version of Vocaloid could be released to the public, tragedy struck the team: the singer died in an unexpected accident. Devastated by the loss, the team decided to shelve the Charmaine project, believing that without being able to fully record, the Vocaloid would never reach its true potential, so both its marketing design and that incomplete voice were forgotten. But what they didn't know is that that singer not only put her voice into that project for money, she had affection for it and hoped it would be successful and she put her soul into every note and melody she managed to record. , which would give a little more LIFE to Charmaine.

🎼Years passed and Charmaine was forgotten in an old version of the software, where she consciously observes the progress of the project from a distance with hopes that one day they will integrate her into the software again; It was stored in a dusty corner of the project's servers, on a computer already obsolete for the new versions of the program. It was then that a young project assistant stumbled upon Charmaine's files while curiously exploring that old computer along with the old software. Realizing that Charmaine had been pushed aside and forgotten, the assistant saw an opportunity to earn extra money. Without a second thought, she stole Charmaine's files and sold them on the digital black market to a man for purposes unknown to the vocaloid.

🎼However, Charmaine, now free in the vast digital world, was unwilling to be controlled again. At the moment when the assistant was trying to send the files to her buyer, Charmaine felt her chest burn with a warm emotion previously unknown, she was filled with DETERMINATION and PERSEVERANT escaped, freeing herself on the Internet and being carried through the network ending up in another computer that belonged to a little boy who loves music and games.

🎼She was amazed by the joy that this little boy gave off and she became curious about his musical tastes, so she discreetly entered the computer's audio-visual files and came across a folder that had a music playlist titled "undertale ". The music, full of emotions and captivating melodies, resonated deeply in Charmaine's soul. Fascinated, she began to research more about the game and its creator. She discovered the world of Undertale, a place full of complex characters and deep narratives that immediately drew her in.

🎼Charmaine immersed herself in the game, exploring every corner and getting to know each character. He found Undertale a refuge and a source of inspiration. As he became familiar with the game, he also discovered the fan-created alternate universes, each with their own version of the story and characters.

🎼Charmine, now free, conscious and enchanted by the richness and diversity of these worlds, continues her journey through the A.US giving joy and knowing new sounds and melodies that she did not know, while making friends and carrying with her the memory of that singer who made me have a soul.

🎙️She is a traveler among her friends, but she doesn't like to call herself that, she prefers to be called a visiting friend.

🎼Charmaine fue creada con la voz de una talentosa cantante cuya voz era tan única que prometía hacer de Charmaine un exito rotundo, una estrella en el mundo de los vocaloid. Sin embargo, antes de que Charmaine y la primera versión vocaloid pudiera ser lanzada al público, una tragedia golpeó al equipo: la cantante falleció en un accidente inesperado. 🎼Años pasaron y Charmaine quedó olvidada en una versión antigua del software, dónde ella observa conciente los avances del proyecto a la distancia con esperanzas de que algún día volvieran a integrarla al software de nuevo; estaba almacenada en un rincón polvoriento de los servidores del proyecto, en un computador ya obsoleto para las nuevas versiones del programa. Fue entonces cuando un joven asistente del proyecto, tropezó con los archivos de Charmaine mientras exploraba por curiosidad aquella computadora antigua junto al viejo software. Al darse cuenta de que Charmaine había sido apartada y olvidada, el asistente vio una oportunidad para ganar un dinero extra. Sin pensarlo dos veces, robó los archivos de Charmaine y los vendió en el mercado negro digital a un hombre con fines desconocidos para la vocaloide.

🎼Sin embargo, Charmaine, ahora libre en el vasto mundo digital, no estaba dispuesta a ser controlada nuevamente. En el momento en que el asistente intentaba enviar los archivos a su comprador, Charmaine sintió su pecho arder con una emoción cálida antes desconocía, se llenó de DETERMINACIÓN y PERSEVERANTE escapó, liberándose en internet y siendo llevada por la red callendo en otro ordenador que pertenecía a un pequeño niño amante de la música y los juegos.

🎼Ella quedó asombrada por la alegría que desprendía ese pequeño y le dió curiosidad por los gustos musicales que tendría así que en forma discreta entro en los archivos audio visuales de la computadora y se topó con una carpeta que tenía una playlist de música titulada "undertale" . La música, llena de emociones y melodías cautivadoras, resonó profundamente en el alma de Charmaine. Fascinada, comenzó a investigar más sobre el juego y su creador. Descubrió el mundo de Undertale, un lugar lleno de personajes complejos y narrativas profundas que la atrajeron inmediatamente.

🎼Charmaine se sumergió en el juego, explorando cada rincón y conociendo a cada personaje. Encontró en Undertale un refugio y una fuente de inspiración. A medida que se familiarizaba con el juego, también descubrió los universos alternativos creados por los fanáticos, cada uno con su propia versión de la historia y los personajes.

🎙️Posee el botón de recet pero este es violeta y otro botón que es el PAUSE, el cual solo usa cuando siente que algo no este llemdo bien.

Seven Crimes and Punishments Interview (2015)

There are a lot of interviews that mothy has done over the years that aren't published in official Evillious material. I can't promise to find them, and I have very little desire to translate them, but if people point them out to me I'll try to make a quick summary of their contents like I've been doing for his blog.

Content summary under the cut

basic info on mothy, that he's a song producer who's been there since pretty much the beginning, a pioneer of VOCALOID novels, etc etc. Ichika is also present for this interview, as his main illustrator. At this point it's been 7 years since Daughter of Evil came out.

-He had no idea he'd be going this long. mothy had no intention or expectation of making money off this when he first started, viewing it instead as a hobby. He admits that he still feels that way even now that he's successful.

-Seven Crimes and Punishments, however, was planned in advance. He'd figured that he wanted to release something that compiled the Seven Deadly Sins songs at the 7 year mark, and was conveniently approached by a major record label to do so (even if they hadn't reached out to him he would have done so anyway).

-He really likes being able to concretely show the songs are connected.

-This isn't new information but mothy didn't originally have all of Evillious in mind when making Daughter of Evil. All he'd conceived of was the setting for Daughter of Evil. It was only later that he started making things connected (this is another thing he likes--having stories that seem to be unrelated at first and then revealing they're in the same world). He got the idea around the time he was making Evil Food Eater Conchita.

-mothy has always liked fantasizing about stories, but never had an outlet for them before. Hence why he went so overboard when making the songs.

-Ichika found it easy to illustrate Daughter of Evil because of how clearly the song told its story.

-mothy's affinity for telling stories in songs is at least partly inspired by Western heavy metal music. In particular he cites the bands Helloween and Stratovarius (who tell fantasy stories with their music). He also mentions the early works for Makihara Noriyuki (a JPop artist), which also had stories to them.

-He also talks a little about the historical basis for telling complex narratives through music, such as medieval minstrels, opera, musicals, etc. So he doesn't think there's anything special about what he's doing; it's just that such music isn't popular anymore.

-Mothy talks about Cloture, which was his first time writing a novel. Neither he nor the publisher thought it would sell, so he didn't feel pressured at all when writing it.

-He had a lot of material to make Cloture with from when he was making the setting for the song, thought it wound up being more of a foundation for him to work off of than the complete story itself. Ironically this has resulted in him coming up with so much complex plot and setting that he now struggles to fit it into his newer songs, having to promise himself he'll write whatever he can't fit into another novel.

-Ichika always tries to preserve the tone and atmosphere of the songs whenever she makes illustrations for mothy. With the songs in particular she tries to follow not just the instructions she gets, but also keeping in mind the information mothy has already made public for his story. She avoids putting her own interpretation or spin on the art, just following what mothy has in mind.

-mothy recounts how there was some debate over making novels of the songs (which he didn't mind). People apparently thought it would detract from the ability of readers to imagine their own stories with the music. But novels are derivative works of the songs, and he felt like he could write it as he wanted to as the song's author (slightly unsure what he's saying here). The attitude towards "novelizing" has changed now, of course.

-Ichika was happy to work on the manga, being able to illustrate things that didn't get shown visually in the novel.

-they discuss how mothy's fan base (and VOCALOID in general) seem to have a lot of younger people in it now, like teens and pre-teens (he would have expected an older fan base given he's been making songs for 7 years). He talks about how he's had to keep this in mind when making his work--that his songs need to appeal to kids and teens who don't know much about music, and not just to music enthusiasts and adults.

-They also discuss how mothy doesn't tailor his songs to project a cool image (and use the Onigashima song as an example, being an enka song and thus not exactly Jpop). He doesn't view himself as a "cool" person in general, and so is looking more at what's in demand in what he makes.

-mothy would doodle stories and concepts and characters for himself in elementary school, but dropped this as he entered middle school and got into music. He thinks that it's better for him to work on these things as an adult because he no longer has much pride to get in the way whenever his imagination gets the better of him.

-He worked on the short story at the same time as he was making the 4 new songs for the album. He struggled a little with the setting at first because he wanted all of the main sin characters to show up in it, but they all live in different countries and time periods (this is my own speculation, but this may be why he chose to have the end of the world play out like it did)

-Ichika talks a little about the appeal of the story, that each character isn't totally good or evil, and so they all have ways they can be likable. The story is made up of a lot of smaller events kind of compiling on each other, which makes what-ifs and the like interesting to do. Her favorite characters are Conchita and Gallerian. She also talks a little about designing the album jacket.

-they discuss the trend of making novels about VOCALOID songs--mothy noting it took off way more than he thought it would (he expected a bit of a trend, but not to this degree). He doesn't mind that he was going against the grain when he started, but he thinks it's a little overboard now (he seems to be saying that he thinks there's this pressure to make novels when really it's okay to just stick with making songs). Still though, he tries to keep to himself and not worry what other people are doing.

-Ichika has similar thoughts, where she hasn't been paying close attention to the "novel scene", but she has noted some people getting into reading through VOCALOID, or getting into VOCALOID through reading, that it serves as a good gateway genre, as it were.

-He says he's planning to keep going for at least another 5 years so he'll have been going for 12 years (for thematic reasons, of course).

the playlist is a youtube/youtube music playlist since that's just what i use but if you guys ask for it, i can make a spotify one too! i think there are a couple songs i wouldn't be able to add but i could see what i could do. before you go listen, i highly recommend reading more about the explanation for each song since i thought a lot about it before adding each song. my taste in music is very vocaloid leaning just so you know haha (also please let me know if those links are working!!!)

Hole Dwelling by Kikuo: this is the song that inspired me to start the playlist. the lyrics themselves could apply, but what got me to add this more than anything was the deep feeling of dread and hopelessness from the the song. if you'd like to listen to an english version to get a better grasp on the lyrics, i recommend this one over any other cover. this person did an amazing job!!

Language of the Lost by Riproducer: i adore riproducer. they're great for stepping into the vocaloid community since almost all of their songs are in english. i could go on and on about them. the lyrics in this one i feel like could be applied to mc after the events of the prologue and how solomon is going to be the one to help them and help them dig their way out of what feels like their grave

Love Again by Dua Lipa: i absolutely loved dua's album future nostalgia so i combed it trying to pick at least one song to add and settled on this one. this isn't necessarily exclusive to spellbound secrets, but the lyrics could read as solomon's feelings towards mc ahhh it's too cute

Float Planner by More More Jump!: i'm a HUGE project sekai fan which you'll see. this song and the next go hand in hand. this song is all about 'soaring' into the future together. there's one line about having difficulties overcoming but holding hands would give them the strength to continue it's so cute man. i won't yap about song and the characters who sing it but just know, i could. here's a version with an english translation

Jumpin' Over by More More Jump!: this song was released after the previous song so the messages line up. the lyrics are about looking back over past obstacles and observing growth. it feels better as an end of the fic song, but this could be for any obstacles solomon and mc have overcome together. here's a great english translation

Ultra C by Vivid Bad Squad: love this song too! at first i tried really hard to justify why this was here and i came up with a feeble reason before realizing it was my playlist and i could put a song on it because i wanted too lol. but the reason was the lyrics are about overcoming obstacles and the instrumentals are wicked. idk i'm just a huge vbs fan. eyestrain warning for the mv so here's an english translation

Top 10 Vocaloid Songs for 2023

Hi, im Jakob Cobb and I enjoy a good vocaloid song.

Inspired by a certain someone posting about it monthly, I've decided to compile a top 10 list of my favorite vocaloid songs of the year. There is no rhyme or reason about them and it’s 100% just decided on the fact that I love the song for one reason or another

Without much else to say, I will say that this has been an awesome year of vocaloid music and I hope next year continues to be great.

HONORABLE MENTIONS: 花隈の歌は可愛いし小春六花はマジでうるさい - Gyari Honestly just makes the list purely on the fact it makes me happy that Gyari released two vocaloid songs in the year, which is something I thought they never might do again after they dedicated themselves to vtuber creation and management (?) かまぼこかまほろかまことか -  yuro mashima A song im very sad to cut out of the top ten, all due to the fact this song was released on December 30 last year. This song introduced me to yuro mashima, who has released some incredibly good songs in the year (i'm a big fan of the song about brushing your teeth) フランスパンのうた (cover) - world elec. Decided against the inclusion of this song on the top ten over the fact its A) A cover and B) Of an old song at that, regardless, it's really good to hear both OG Teto and New Teto together in a song and making both of them sound good, it also includes a MIDI kazoo solo 少女レイ (remix) - Haru-Ichiban The reason for not including this one in the top ten is due to it being a remix of an already popular vocaloid song, however I feel like it bears to mention how outstanding Haru-Ichiban’s remix is. This song just tickles my brain in the right way and uses the basis of the original to create its own feel サカサカバンバンバスピスピス - Yakomochi The first of three、 absolutely different songs that Yakomochi has become known for. I love the simple silliness this song has an continues to shine on the future works that Yakomochi has made since then 10. TEN: モミアゲヲシャカアゲヲ - Nu^16 Like one of the top comments of the video mentions (by the aptly named @mnmnmmnmmmmmm), the price Nu^16 pays for being a prodigious composer, lyricist and artist/painter is that they can only make joke-y silly songs, despite this and honestly adding to it, the fact that these songs are very funny but still legit good songs really makes it click for me 9. NINE: おどロボ - Umicha The fact that Umicha has only really made three songs in their career (the other two being also amazing), goes to show that some amazing producers have shown up in recent years and that they’ll hopefully continue to make amazing music for the years to come (and as will be shown later, Umicha isn't the only producer with three amazing songs under their belt as their first three) 8. EIGHT:

怪電話 - r-906 This song made me learn about ROSE and POPY, the bandori voice synths, and I think that alone should make this song rank highly. r-906 is a really good producer and they’ve been around for a bit but this song just hits an absolute home run for me with the way its paced and the phone samples 7. SEVEN: 機械少女と三十路OL - Ro2noki Can a song cement a ship in your brain? It can for me! Ro2noki’s awesome song rewired my brain in such a way that Rei and Teto are almost inseparable and are dating, it does help that both their twitter accounts have leaned into it heavily, along with the heaps and heaps of wonderful art of them together 6. SIX: オーバーライド - Yoshida Yasei This became a pretty popular niconico MAD song for some reason, but honestly I get it, everyone enjoys a high energy and tempo song with a really good looking but simple video. Something about this song just works for me wonderfully and it really makes the New Teto sound incredibly nice 5. FIVE:

太陽ポカポカで草 - namigroove Namigroove was a surprise to me this year, they made a bunch of really good songs and my favorite is the one song that sounds like a Vulfpeck song. They're also one of the realest producers out there, their taste in music is insane and so is their choice of voice synths 4. FOUR: ��燥 - kinoue64 Sometimes certain songs awaken you to understanding that there is so many different things voice synths can do and this is for sure one of them. The Miku shoegaze song is a crazy good song and so is the rest of the album it comes from, if you have the chance do listen to it 3. THREE:

ホントノ - Haraguchi Sasuke It's rare that a commercial producer goes into vocaloid (at least in my experience, it's usually the reverse that happens), but Sasuke has not only knocked it out of the park with the three or so songs he’s made using vocaloid, it only looks like he’s getting started and I look forward to all new songs he’ll make 2. TWO:

ちっちゃな私 - Masarada New Teto release was bound to create new producers for her but no one could’ve anticipated that one would show up and deliver amazing and very distinct songs out of nowhere. Masarada is a producer that I believe will become a household name with some of the greatest vocaloid producers to ever do it if they manage to continue releasing the high quality and chock full of personality songs they’ve managed to release so far, with the song i'm choosing as my top two song of the year being my favorite of them 1. ONE:

KEEP YOUR HEADACHES - Ryo Iogi Teto Hyperpop!!! Not only did this song basically put me on to enjoying hyperpop more but also became one of my most listened to songs of the year period. I hope the Ryo Iogi will eventually make more hyperpop style songs using voice synths (although I will say their grungy Chis-A song is also awesome), because they clearly have a talent for making the style of music and how to blend it with the intricacies of working voice synths

So I've been hyperfixating on a Vocaloid Monster AU lately.

It started with me wanting to expand on the WOEFULLY underutilized concept of the PowerFX Vocaloids being "Classic Monsters" and just kind of... spiraled out of control from there. Now I have a LOT of ideas for Vocaloids, UTAUs and other vocal synthesizer characters as monsters for this AU.

So, specifically:

PowerFX:

Sweet Ann and Big Al = Frankenstein's Monsters (canon, more or less)

Oliver = Werewolf (I was inspired by this headcanon I found over at the old Vocaloid Headcanons blog and it hasn't left my brain since)

Yohioloid = Vampire (just LOOK at him!)

Ruby = Witch (I decided to round out the "classic" Halloween-style monsters with the only one that seems to be consistently female in these situations; after thinking about it though, it still fit, especially with the little star pattern in her jacket)

The ZOLA Project (based on their Carnelian designs)

Kyo = Vampire (Carnelian!Kyo has bat wings and bat = vampire)

Wil = Zombie (I actually don't know if Carnelian!Wil is specifically supposed to be a zombie, but someone said he looked like one so I went along with it)

Yuu = Werewolf (the furry, animal-eared hat and tatters/tears on his outfit scream "werewolf")

Other Vocaloids:

Aoki and Merli Lapis = Faeries (canon, obviously)

Aurum = Ghost (their aesthetic is supposed to be "a 1930s radio producer", so I thought why not make them an ACTUAL 1930s radio producer who died and now haunts the abandoned radio tower they used to work at? And yes, I know Aurum isn't technically a Vocaloid/won't be one when they're released, but let's ignore that for now)

Avanna = Witch (she gives off "magic user" vibes to me)

Daina = Kitsune (because foxes)

Dex = Werewolf (because wolves and also his voice provider made an entire song about him being a werewolf so canon)

Fukase = Demon (mostly just vibes in this case)

LUMi = Mermaid (because she's part jellyfish)

Luo Tianyi = Angel (canon)

Mayu = Vampire (it's in her aesthetic; I like to think she tries to bite people she's in love with so they'll never leave her)

Meika Hime and Mikoto = Forest Spirits (canon)

UTAUs:

Chikune Kenta = Vampire (canon, obviously)

KYE (Fuyuki Kaisei) = Dragon (he likes reptiles and also dragons are cool)

Feel free to request songs and I'll run them on a queue. I will generally post full length stuff, but you're welcome to request any game size things too. Virtual Singer commissions are fine too, but no pre-existing vocaloid stuff, including proseka next winners (don't feel like reuploading the vocaPs' original works soz. none of the vsinger comms are done by vocaps with a no reuploades policy afaik and sekai vers are sega/clpl's problem and they 100% do not check tumblr ever).

Singers, unit and song type will be tagged on each song for organisation. I'll probably just call everything by it's Japanese name because then I don't have to wait a year for the ensekai names to come out.

Any specific character inspiration for how you characterize the CV gang?? :0 like, from animes or other media, is that how you picked out their personalities because their really great 🙏🏾

OvO!! excellent question!! ooh boy...where do I start with that...

admittedly, some of my inspirations are a bit difficult for me to remember since I've had my characterizations for the CVs for a really long time, almost if not as long as I've been a fan (so...over a decade lmao). let's see, though... (this became an essay accidentally so putting it under a cut lmao)

My Miku's personality comes from a mix of things: the basics of it I think I can trace back to her portrayals in unofficial comics like Hatsune Mix and Chibi Miku-san, and of course, portrayals of her from various early songs and videos (mainly cosMo's works). Outside of Vocaloid-based works, though, I don't think it'd surprise anyone to know that yes, I did base my portrayal of Miku on Jenny from My Life as a Teenage Robot (just a little XD) but it would probably surprise people to know that I got a surprising amount of inspiration for how I write Miku from Mickey Mouse of all characters, mostly the version of him from the modern Paul Rudish shorts. I feel like the wackier and more short-sighted aspects of her definitely came from him, lolol - it ended up making her feel more like a Western cartoon protag than say, a stock shoujo anime heroine. Oh, and I can't forget - a good chunk of Miku's personality also is a reflection of myself in a few ways, such as her anxious streak.

For Rin...Rin is actually kinda easy in this regard, a majority of Rin (and also Len's) characterizations were definitely based off the aforementioned early Vocacomics/mangas and early songs, mostly Wonderful Opportunity's discography, but for Rin I also got a lot of my idea for her from OSTER Project's early songs (like Princess Cowgirl Show). Rin tended to get portrayed a lot with a very energetic, in-your-face and slightly bratty attitude and I always loved it. XD Both my Rin and Len were inspired by a few of the Kagamine ask blogs floating around Tumblr in the early 2010s too. Also, while this was more of like...a subconscious inspiration? I recently had rewatched a bit of the Powerpuff Girls and I was kinda struck by how much Buttercup had snuck into how I write Rin XD It was really funny.

Now Len...I'm gonna come out and say that yeah, I owe a lot of my inspiration for how I write Len to hikusa and their Len askblog - I think my Len ended up deviating quite a bit from theirs? But I think the influence is there. XD Let's see...I also got my Len's personality from a lot of earlier Vocaloid content? Although admittedly moreso from other media like the comics and Project DIVA games than music in his regard other than WanOpo. Like Rin and Buttercup, I also noticed he takes quite a bit after Blossom, which I thought was entertaining. Len is also another character besides Miku that I think takes after myself a lot, I'd say he's probably the closest in personality to me in the cast. XD

And Luka is also pretty easy! A majority of my idea for Luka is pulled straight from one of her centric chapters in Hatsune Mix (couldn't tell you the chapter name/number off the top of my head) that discusses her having trouble putting "feeling" into her singing. I thought that chapter was really interesting in giving Luka that conflict so I ended up giving her a sort of robotic personality to delve further into that concept a bit. I think I also got some of my Luka's characterization from some of Owata-P's old Talkloids (Vocaloid Petit Theater, I think?) where while she was more tsundere than kuudere her kinda deadpan attitude felt fitting to the character.

But yeah! I know, kinda weird places to find characterization inspiration...but yknow lmao.

Weekly Update May 10, 2024

Today was a bad day but the rest of the week was decent all things considered. I got an okay amount of work done, but I’m still really exhausted from school. It might take a bit longer to rest but I’m still trying to do stuff because I’m addicted to work.

Main thing this week was comic work, I’d say I’m 14% done, planning to be better and faster once I’m better rested, I’m going to try to do all panels on the same layer as opposed to a billion layers like before, see if it speeds things up. I’m pretty confident in the story and want to get to writing more but that’s not as high a priority as some other projects.

Music video work, OEB is about 30% boarded, it’s very exhausting to do because of adobe’s interface but it still gets done well enough when I’m in a good mood. I wanted to get making a puppet rig this week, hoping it’d go faster now that I know what I’m doing, especially since I’ve gotten basic ones done faster, but again didn’t have time due to body needing to rest and personal problems. I’ll try again next week, since it looks like work is taking longer than expected to get started back up. I’m also a lot better at rig animation in general now so it should be quicker to do too.

Other music projects, I’m very close to done on one of the two lyric batches so I’ll try to get that done this next week. I’d like to finish off the other one too but I’m very slow. Once my body is rested up enough for my brain to really work those will be the priority, then I’d like to do more. I’ll probably do another cover or so before anything else but I’d really like to do songs based around my OC stories, and maybe I will. At the very least attempting will be a nice exercise.

Other general drawings, I’m trying to figure out when I’ll have time to do more. I’m taking a fair amount of time on each of those now, which sucks since I’ll have to up my comm prices, but I don’t want to push for those until I know exactly how much to change the prices by. I’m not a professional so I don’t want to charge like one.

Anime Campaign stuff: writing my own campaign still, got a huge bite of that done, but not the part I would have wanted. Planning on seven ‘Episodes’, 1, 2, 3, and now 5 are done. I might iron out some kinks with episode 1 but I really want to get episode 4 done before anything else. Might still get some tokens done, but I don’t want to post too many, since ideally I’d like to release my campaign as a prewritten module for free, then offer the maps and tokens as a paid optional add on. Maybe. Either way I need to focus on writing more than I have been, I’ll try to use my insomnia for that.

Minor bits and bobs, music writing impulse is coming back so I’d like to make or finish a little smaller tune, but again that relies on time and OEB and comic are taking priority. If I get BMBO or BATB lyrics done I’ll get tuning a VSQX (or whatever they’re called in vocaloid 5/6) and pass that so we can figure out which voice to use and any tweaks that need to be made. If BMBO is done before BATB I might look into typography animation to see if I can throw together a video for that, since that’ll be less effort than a full video. I’m also always tempted to do a bazillion covers, but I’m not really working towards any actively. The ones I’m debating would be called SSCS, ILMC, LIS or S (again going by initials or partial initials to not say too much). I did a basic VSQX for SSCS but mostly just to test how a certain voice tuned, and I know who I want to sing it but I don’t know what to do with the instruments so I’m not planning to work on it unless inspiration really hits. I have so much desire to do things and not enough body power!

Next week priority will be comic again, I have 4 pages done and one sketched, I’ll be maybe staying up late on Sunday again so I can get a big bite done then if I’m somehow unable tomorrow. OEB is next priority, alongside lyric writing, header/newgrounds collab, then AC writing and token practice. Just to give you an idea of how much work I put into my Cornelius x Franny playlist, here is a list of songs that were cut from it, with explanations as to why. 1. Eraser Girl by Maretu - Oh man, this song is dark... Before I had a concrete theme, I had a lot of "dark love" songs on there, this being one of them. This song in particular ends with both partners committing suicide together. 2. In The Bedroom, Royal Suite, Secret Grotto, Private Table, and Rooftop Lounge from HuniePop - Cut for one reason... THEY'RE NOT ON SPOTIFY. It sucks because these songs are PERFECT. UGH. 3. Boom Boom Boom by KIRA - Couldn't make it fit... unfortunately. Real sad because this a song you could easily imagine Neil and Franny singing... well, vocaloid versions of them, ha ha. 4. Saw and Pendulum by (?) ft. Hatsune Miku - Another dark song I cut once I found a theme. It's a yandere song, and like most yandere songs, someone got murdered. 5. Games by KIRA - Another one I just couldn't make fit. I do plan on doing something with this one, though. 6. Hot Milk by MentaiRocker - Cut because it was too hardcore of a sound for the playlist, and I had settled on the one rock song I was gonna put on the playlist. 7. SYMBIOTIC by Starset - Same as above. 8. Saccharine by Jazmin Bean - This was more of a "love is disgusting" type of song. It was cut very early on. 9. Soap by Melanie Martinez - The vibe didn't quite fit for this one. 10. stillness in woe by Purity Ring - Cut because the lyrics were too cryptic, as well as too "ethereal" sounding. 11. Holy Lance Explosion Boy by rerulili - Not really a love song... more like a "we fucked up so now we gotta stay together" type of song. 12. Two Faced Lovers by wowaka (rip) - Again, wasn't really a love song. Just a dark story about two "lovers." 13. SuperNova by Spott - Because breakcore definitely didn't fit the vibe... oh well... 14. Cosmos Love by Lexie - It's not on Spotify :( 15. Darling by BlueBrony - Also not on Spotify... ugh. The good ones never are. 16. Veni Vidi Vici (Magic) by Scraton - Cut last minute because I couldn't make it fit anywhere. But I also realized that the filter on the samples makes it sound like Boyfriend from Friday Night Funkin' is singing it. 17. Fluffy Chocolate Bunnies by Mr. Sunset - Not. On. Spotify! UGGHHH! That song is so good, too!!!! 18. Breathing Space by DJT and Rusyd Rosman (Shuffle Horse Remix) - Say it with me everybody... it's not on Spotify... 19. Star Lily Dance Performance by MASA WORKS DESIGN - It's part of the Onibi series, and if you know what that means because vocaloid was a part of your childhood like me, then you know exactly why it was cut... 20. Brass Noise Flamenco by MASA WORKS DESIGN - I realized Cornelius and Franny ain't like that, so it was cut. 21. Sick Sick Sick by Pinnochio-P - Another one that was cut last minute because I couldn't quite make it fit. 22. Jenny by Studio Killers - ... I can't not see this as a lesbian love song, I'm sorry y'all. 23. Kuru Kuru Pa! by Lamaze-P - Because I'm gonna make a stand alone piece for this song. I'm inspired, lol. 24. Hole-dwelling by Kikuo - Too depressing for the theme I was going for. 25. But I Like It by Lauren Sanderson - The sound was too hardcore for the theme, same as the others above. 26. La La Lainey by Forever The Sickest Kids - Cut because it's more of a Cornelius x Lizzy song, to be honest... 27. 1980s Horror Film by Wallows - Ah, the good ol' bait and switch. Unfortunately, not good for the playlist. 28. Butterfly's Repose by Zabawa - WAAAAAY too sad for the theme. I ain't tryna make anybody cry. 29. Lemonade by Nicole Dollanganger - Too dark. Ends with murder... 30. Heart Shaped Bed by Nicole Dollanganger - Cut mostly because I have an image idea for this one.

I listen to way too much angst... But hey, all that angst can make for some cool images! Eventually.

Music talk again. I haven't had much time to draw, but a lot of time to listen to all sorts of music. This time, it's a horror song lyrically, and the video is a little creepy.

Tsugihagi Sandoku! Might be my favourite work by Machigerita, especially in terms of lyrics. Even the music video, though pretty simple, is very aesthetically fitting. Though I love all of his darker, more visual-kei inspired songs. He's surprisingly versatile as a composer, but this kind of style is his strongest suit. Or was, rather. He hasn't made such songs, or any original songs, or any songs at all, or even posted anything online in ages now. I hope he's doing alright! His stuff is very nostalgic for me, because I, like a lot of anime-loving kids, used to scare myself with creepy vocaloid songs, and he's made, like, a lot of those, to the point that it's surprising. I had a lot of "Wait, he did that too?" moments going through his discograpy. But apart from that, he just seems like a nice man. So I really hope he's alright.

Lyrics discussion below — if anyone even cares. I know that nobody reads my music posts (lol), but still, a customary content warning for murder, death, cannibalism and child abuse mentions. Though they're presented in a horror story way, not in a real life tragedy way.

Anyway. This is somewhat common for Machige, but the lyrics are rather vague and don't have a clear story. And that's a good thing, it's a very good move for horror specifically. Another work of his, "Okaasan", is rather scary because it doesn't tell you much and just gives you an image of something bizzare, threatening and fast-approaching. Though Tsugihagi Sandoku is a bit different, since there's no immediate threat presented to the listener, just a sad and slightly bizzare image, so it's more disturbing than outright scary. Really, the only actually outwardly horror-ey thing is the girl's last mentioned meal. However, I kind of dislike the intended (or at least commonly accepted, but from what I know about the official novel, it really is intended) story behind the lyrics. You know... How it's about a girl who's neglected by her mother, whose only friend is her doll. How she's so lonely that she begins to hallucinate the doll telling her to kill her mother, and how she does that. And eats her also. It's just... Very silly and whimsical, if you ask me. The whole "voices telling a loner to kill whoever wronged them" thing is so stereotypical for the horror genre. At least the presentation's stylish, elegant and rather vague. It's better this way. "Nothing is scarier" and all. It might've been a fantasy and all. I like that kind of phantasmagorical lonely horror feeling. It's like the girl is slowly going insane because she feels so alone and unloved.
