and i also spotted the post talking about an endgame for ej if caswen wasn’t a possibility - and while rina is adorable, there is no denying that disney had a golden opportunity right in front of them but i digress. when i tell you the post made me squeak with joy at not being alone in shipping him with rico and/or kaden! if i had the confidence, i would absolutely write up and post some snippets or a proper spin-off featuring one or both of the potential pairs alongside some caswen.

General PSA to all, that my inbox/askbox, whichever you want to call it, is always open. As long as you're not being hateful or creepy.

I struggle sometimes with Elico, Daywell, and the ocassional Alawell just because I'm not a good multi-shipper. As a reader I can handle it, especially if the fic is good in general, but when writing it's a much bigger struggle.

It's also a little funny to me that the Dancers in HSMTMTS have only slightly more screentime and characterization then the band in Glee. Who incidentally are also referred to by their actors' first names because the show doesn't offer anything else. (Though I will admit, the fact they canonized it makes it that much funnier. Like we know Kaden Dayton's character shares that exact name, which is just...magical)

Also, do not be afraid to write and post to your heart's content. Like anxiety and imposter syndrome are just kind of...fixtures whenever I write, but at the end of the day the only way to get better is to straight up write more. And considering EL James' terrible writing was officially published, became popular, and even got movie adaptations, the bar is almost impossible to go under.

And....here come more WIP ideas now that I'm thinking about these boys again. One would be the quartet (EJ, Ricky, Rico, and Kaden) initially seeming a bit soured because they ALL think the person they have their eyes on has eyes for someone else, until they eventually figure out that they're not actually a love square, but rather a love X. On to a more depressing idea...EJ and Mack trying to teach each other the advantages of their respective histories, only for EJ to break down when he realizes his childhood wasn't nearly as joyful as it should've been. And Mack can have a breakdown too. (WiPs #28 and #29 it seems)

I haven’t thought about All American too much during this hiatus but here’s some thought dumps. 

Jordan’s relationship with Layla has been a vehicle for displaying Jordan’s character development. He summed up his entire year with the word “maturity” and pretty much his primary plot in S5 was Layla. He is more mature now and we see it in his relationship with Layla. As a fan of Jordan and Jordayla, I’m happy to see how his character journey continues through the marriage chapter of life, and how it’s good and right. When he got married the first time, he didn’t ask his parents, he didn’t put in the work into the marriage afterwards, he didn’t tell his friends about it, he just did not go about it in a way that set them up to be successful at all. This time will be different. I did want to have heard his reflections but we’ll see them for sure.

In the last episode, Layla was the mouthpiece for the cons for marriage. I just can’t wait to hear them describe their decision and relationship. 

I just LOVE the later parts of a ship where we look over their past moments (Did anybody else just watch the Rina flashback montage in hsmtmts S4?!). When they call back to prom etc, when I hear their vows, I fear I won’t survive.

In S3, it comes up repeatedly that Jimone thought that marriage would turn their love “real”, whereas Jordayla’s love is very much already REAL. I did want to make a post about this but just don't have it in me to rewatch S3 lol.

To revisit their best friends era, just rewatch S4. To revisit their dating era, just rewatch S5. It doesn’t matter if it's too soon for them to get married, just watch S6 when you’re ready hahaha. I’m happy that a married era is being filmed and released of our favourite couple, who wouldn't be?

A cute thing – When he’s advising Asher about Jaymee, he talks about her being “not afraid to live.” Similar to 5x20, when talking about Jasher, we can hear into his thoughts about his own relationship. One of the main reasons for proposing is that after his traumatic experience, he’s eager to live, and he can only see himself doing it with one person. We see this theme repeatedly: “He wants to start a life with her” / “I don’t want to spend a day of my life without you knowing.” Also, whilst he’s giving relationship advice, Layla is heart eyeing him hard and it takes me back to the first time she caught feelings for him when he was giving relationship advice about Clay during the prom dance and she’s taken aback by that sincere passionate side of him. It’s still something that makes her swoon!

I’ve enjoyed their love story happening away from everyone, a little nervous for them to be in the middle of the spotlight. Oh, and I hope the marriage process is not to Billy-centric, hearing his name in the proposal almost sent me over the edge. Realistically, I know he’ll come up but I just won’t love it. 

I think the writers always (as much as a fan can ask for) get them right and will continue to.

Okay I saw your tag saying this is a Portwell space and you’re not here for Rina debates on my anon post which is fine but I just stumbled upon it in the HSMTMTS tag so I sent it. One last thing though :) Ricky clearly grew from being selfish as y’all say in s3. He showed up for Gina multiples times showing he cared about her. Really working hard towards the musical for her which Ashlyn said he never did before, telling her “he’s proud of her” bc he understands it’s something she has wanted, talking to her on the porch about the drama, helping her set up a canoe date with EJ despite his feelings, approaching her in camp prom but backing off when he sees she’s crying but still checking up on her afterwards, and still not telling her his feelings bc he knows she’s vulnerable shows that. So he clearly gets her feelings, understands her, validates her in season 3. He knows how he went wrong and how Gina might have felt when he has to help Gina with her promposal. Maybe he didn’t outright say sorry (although he does that one time in school with Big Red and seems like he’s about to in the quincenera episode before Gina cuts him off) but that doesn’t mean he never grew from his mistakes. Gina does deserve a bigger apology and I hope they address it in s3 but let’s not act like EJ ever apologized to her in s3 about calling her out in front of all their friends with the Ricky comment at the pool, not showing up for their last dance when he knew how much she wanted that, or even in their breakup instead completely shifting blame onto her and saying everything’s because of Ricky and he was actually her boyfriend. But I guess it’s hard to see how much EJ hurt her in s3 or how Ricky’s grown when you’re still stuck on season 2.

i don't necessarily think ricky was selfish in s2 he just wasn't the best friend to gina.

the stuff he did this season was pretty bare minimum when you look at both gina's relationship with EJ and her relationship with her friends. they have all shown up for her and supported her and now because Ricky has the free time and says like one nice thing and helps her once they're suddenly the best relationship? also, he didn't even read the whole show so it's not like he worked that much harder.

also, EJ wasn't able to be there for all the things it's not his fault. he tried his best to be there for her but he was also busy trying to direct a whole show that was about to be broadcast across the internet and also ensure that he could stick around for Gina all while dealing with his POS dad and he's only freaking 18 years old. also, EJ and gina both made snappy comments at each other

the difference between the ways EJ and ricky hurt her is that EJ was doing everything for gina in s3, and he still cared about her even when he was going through his own crap and tried to make time for her, and it was just two weeks of their whole relationship realistically it's not that big of deal if he can't be around her all the time because it's just two weeks. he wanted to spend time with her and do all the things but he was forced to run the show to help all his friends. him not running around the woods or attending a basketball game while he was running an entire show he never wanted to run in the first place is so valid and not hurtful in the way that knowing how someone feels about you and ignoring that and never addressing it and asking them to give you advice as if you were their girlfriend also expecting them to be your bestie and support you when you haven't done the same for them is. the difference is, EJ was struggling so much in order to help everybody.

also, i can't just disregard season 2 because i can't just erase the fact that ricky has a history of not being the best person for gina and hasn't done that much for her while gina and ej have a history of supporting and understanding each other in a way s3 tries to make us forget by the end.

again, as i've stated in other posts, I'm too tired to properly debate this just know that i know how i feel about both relationships and the more asks you send me, nothing will change. so just save both of our time and go read through the positive r*na tag or something

i think the world needs your hsmtmts analysis

i was waiting until i watched this weeks episode to answer this ask and my current answer is that it’s a bad show with bad writing and insanely amazing and talented and appealing young people acting in the dumbest storylines a human being could ever think up. ok im being unfair. but let me talk about it i guess

season 1 was remarkably good young peoples television, the stories were tight, the actors were extremely appealing, it handled a lot of topics in a way that felt pretty well-thought out (for a disney show. like for example in s1 i thought rickys family situation was given the appropriate complexity and informed the story and the character in a believable way) also every single song in s1 slapped so hard it was insane. wondering is still in my top 50 songs of all time on spotify bc that song went SO hard. the main problem was that the narrative was concluded when ricky and nini got together. that was the driving force behind all of season 1. so they already had an uphill battle going on from there.

season 2 was one of the worst pieces of television ive ever suffered through. the stakes were all over the place, the ending was a complete garbage fire, and as olivia rodrigos star rose, it became a problem because she was kind of… the main character. she was the whole center of the show. the whole season just felt like everyone was running around with their heads on fire trying to figure out what to do now that everyone knew that her and joshua had dated and broken up and she’d released a smash hit of an album about it, and the only shining lights in that season were seblos and portwell, again mostly just bc the actors are so appealing. (and watching the villains of s1 get redeemed through liking each other… it was great. i loved it.)

season 3 just feels like it’s retreading ground that doesn’t need retreading? like oh now ej is an asshole again! for no reason except that he’s only acting that way because the writers don’t know what to do with him because he got too appealing last season and now we don’t have a villain! ricky is in love with gina again because we invented that lily girl and then everyone hated her so we wrote her out! nini is just… gone because olivia rodrigo is on the sour tour but we did have one random episode with the guy from modern family in it and we just haven’t addressed it since! like it’s better than s2 by a long shot but it still doesn’t feel like there’s any drive to the narrative, except the ricky/gina thing which, like i said, just feels like an unnecessary retread to me.

the only thing that’s not a retread this season is this sibling storyline that is BORING MY TEETH OUT because WHO CARES. why are we wasting so much screen time on siblings we don’t care about who we have no investment in? who cares about them? also have any of the writers ever had a sibling? sometimes they’re annoying! that’s the whole thing about siblings!! it’s not some unforgivable roadblock it’s just like. a normal part of being in a family. i cannot bring myself to care in the slightest about either of these characters.

i think another problem in s3 is that there’s no villain. like maybe corbin bleu is the villain? or the documentary is the villain? maybe they’re trying to make ej the villain again? even in s2 we had that lily girl. but this season there’s no real antagonist so it doesn’t feel like the story is going anywhere. so they’re doing a documentary. okay? why does it matter? why do they care? there needs to be some kind of stakes if it doesn’t work out. i mean last season the stakes changed episode to episode and the ultimate conclusion to them was “nvm<3” but at least they *tried* to have stakes? this season things are just like, happening.

also in s1 the musical was like, central to the story and this season it’s like. oh yeah we’re doing frozen btw but you can’t see any of it which is the same thing they did last season with batb and it’s annoying to me. because if they wanted to draw parallels (which it seems ? like they’re trying to do, but they’re lazy about it) they’d do what they did in s1 and do 1 original song and 1 musical song in each episode and tie the stories together. but instead they’re like. no <3

also i love kourtney. i feel like i never talk about her but i love her. ashlyn too. i wish they still had arcs that impacted the central narrative but i guess the problem is there IS no central narrative anymore. maybe that’s the whole problem — the show just feels unfocused. like what are they trying to say anymore? we’re just spinning our wheels. where are we GOING? why does it matter? what justifies this narrative? it feels like even the writers don’t know anymore.

ok that was more of a rant than an analysis but anyway the point is im ANNOYED and i feel like all these crazy talented kids are being wasted in these storylines and it bums me out because i loved s1 SO MUCH and i just feel like the show isn’t doing justice to it’s own characters.

i mean not to go here AGAIN but im going to do the glee comparison bc tbh it’s true. basically go read my glee s1 essay about why glee s1 is the only good season of THAT show and it’s basically the same thing. bc so often with these shows they have a good and coherent narrative purpose in the first season, and then in the subsequent seasons they just spin their wheels doing fanservice and having fun with the characters people latched onto, but they don’t actually write a good STORY. and that’s what’s missing from hsmtmts. it’s not good characters, or good acting, or good writing on a micro scale (we’ve had some bangers of lines this season!!) what’s missing is a good, justified, truly plot-driving story that keeps people hooked AND develops and explores all the characters at the same time

Carlos is going to have so much fun playing Olaf he will be sharing a lot of scenes with his close friends Gina, Kourtney and Ricky. Carlos will literally be going up to his close friends and be like "Hi, I'm Olaf and I love warm hugs" and it's going to be hilarious. I desperately need to hear Carlos sing "In Summer" because I know he will kill it and it would be the perfect opportunity for Carlos to show off his dance moves because Olaf does a little tap dance in the song.

hi anon! i fully agree that carlos as olaf makes sense - you’re totally right, they could make a really good dance number with in summer, i hope they do that! - and he’ll be great for the role. i do hope he starts feeling a little better about the casting, though, because i don’t exactly get the impression he’s happy with olaf yet. hopefully we’ll get some more insight into that in the next episode! we’ll definitely be seeing him in costume (based on the promo pics) and i’m so excited for that!

I am really mad at the writers for the way they treated Portwell this season. By throwing away their relationship and treating it like meant nothing to Gina. Do they really expected me to believe that Gina never had feelings for EJ? I know some people are in love with the idea of being in love but, I don't think Gina is that type of girl that would just date anyone that has feelings for her that makes her feel love. Portwell deserves so much better than this.

I have seen on so many occasions that the Lucaya kiss was too passionate for Disney's standards at the time. That's not why it was cut. Michael Jacobs tweeted (@GMWwriters) the almost kiss was shot two different ways (kiss and almost kiss) and that it didn't fit the direction that the show was going in. It's safe to say that Riley and Maya's friendship would've imploded had Lucas kissed Maya. Riley wasn't ready, obviously. I could write a list on why Rucas was doomed but I hope this is useful.

Yeah I forgot about this but I remember this being said too! TBH I heard both which leads me to believe maybe it was a little bit of both reasons.

It’s interesting because I was just on twitter for a LONG time trying to find where the writers talked about this but couldn’t find it. HOWEVER, Peyton Meyer (who played Lucas) apparently did a Twitch stream literally a couple months ago and talked about how they shot two versions and how he wishes the kiss was aired. Even he didn’t totally understand why the other one was shown. I know a Lucaya when I see one 🥲 I also saw all the tweets about how sad the showrunners were it got cancelled. Gosh it makes me wish we had a s4 for that and Andi Mack SO much more. Im so happy we’re getting one for hsmtmts

sooo people (r*na’s) are starting to talk about this. Im getting a little worried, i mean there’s nothing to be worried about i know my pw will be engame but this still could mean something, right..:(

Meg Donnelly talked about HSMTMTS in a recent interview and she revealed that she had filmed a lot of scenes with Matt Cornett which means EJ and Val will have a friendship. "When we filmed High School Musical, most of our scenes were together so that was really cool. It was so easy and so comfortable and we actually got so much closer on the High School Musical set. It was really weird not seeing him in a blue wig, but nonetheless, it was great." (This part is from an anon but still addresses what you're asking about so I'm putting it t/g.)

Here's the article everyone's freaking out about LOL. I have quite a few asks in my inbox about this part Meg talks about, so I will try to answer them all today (some t/g to save time). First thing first, let's all take a nice, deep breath. Okay? Breathe in. Breathe out. Now, I don't think we need to worry all that much just yet. Didn't we all predict months ago there was a strong possibility EJ and Val could be childhood friends from camp? Maybe they’ve been attending Camp Shallow Lake since they were junior campers and have always been close friends. Does Meg’s quote here really surprise anyone? To me, it just (partly) confirms Val and EJ may share history/a friendship and they’ll use it as an opportunity to show EJ’s growth as a character from the last time he attended camp (when he food poisoned Emily so Nini would be the lead). Val was presumably there at camp when it happened. But EJ doesn’t operate the way he used to (during his selfish 1.0 days) and Val may very well call attention to that. If they are good friends, maybe Val will let the audience know that she sees a real change in him from last year. He’s not who he used to be. The EJ now is “a really good guy” (2.08) who tries to do the right thing (in the right ways this time!) Just b/c “most” of Meg’s and Matt’s scenes were t/g doesn’t inherently mean that’s the end of Portwell lmaooo. Meg also said a few weeks ago that she feels like ppl will “really like” her character, even tho Val will contribute to some drama this season. I don’t think she would make that claim if most of the audience was supposed to hate/dislike her. I’m not getting antagonistic vibes from Val given her character description, which implies she won’t be just another Lily. Tim also said the Wildcats would “come head-to-head and heart-to-heart with Shallow Lake campers Jet, Maddox, and Val," which very well could mean Gina misinterpreting EJ and Val’s relationship at first before she has an eventual heart-to-heart with her by season’s end. Please keep in mind this show spent 2 whole seasons building Gina and EJ up as individual characters first, then progressed their story t/g. It took them 2 seasons to even agree to go out on a date together. With S3′s timeline being only 2 weeks, I doubt Val will cause any lasting damage to Portwell. This is the first season that they’re dating and we, the audience, get to see EJ and Gina as boyfriend and girlfriend for the first time. It’s more likely Val will force EJ and Gina to confront any insecurities in their relationship during these 2 weeks than Val causing them to permanently break up. Plus, as far as we know, Meg will be guest starring only in S3. I don’t think we’ll see her character again for any future season(s) considering Val may be based in California, not Utah. I get the feeling once the trailer is released, Val’s part in the trailer may be deceptive in that it’ll look like she’ll cause bad drama for Portwell, but it could actually be the good kind of drama that will help strengthen them in the long run. TLDR: don’t stress over Meg and Matt sharing “most” scenes together in S3. I know Portwell have a tough season ahead of them, but who says they won’t continue on this journey together? Val might just help EJ realize just how much he cares about Gina and how different his relationship with her is from his previous relationships. We just won’t know until S3 starts airing.

this is so true and it’s frankly infuriating how some n*ni stans (mostly l*v stans) want to credit the shows success onto ol*via and have been awful to sofia lately. when the wdykal duet came out they wanted to talk about rin* duets and now they want to talk about n*ni being "the female lead that carried the show!" no, she did not. i like l*v & nini but sofia was carrying the acting of that show in her back and still is. she was the only recognizable face of the show at the time because andi mack was so popular. sofia getting her moment to shine was long overdue. it’s been so sad seeing all the low key racist comments lately. "she looks like ol*via" "she’s getting her moment because ol*via left". rina is not a thing because olivia left. rina has been a thing and was always going to be a thing because tim switched the writing when he noticed the chemistry. like i will need those liv stans that tuned into the show on s2 for the drama to stop watching the show and stop disrespecting sofia.

not so secret fact about me that most people know, i LOVE olivia like i am such a huge fan of her and everything she does, and i LOVED nini as a character.

but what i’m NEVER going to do is disrespect the reason i even know about hsmtmts at ALL which is because of miss sofia wylie. i’ve known and loved sofia way way way longer than any of the other cast members of this show, and for so many of this shows original fans SHE is the reason that we even watch.

i strongly believe that without her there is no fanbase, there is no core group of people who spent countless hours online in 2019 defending this show to all the people who said it was going to be awful and said it was going to ruin the hsm movies. the original fanbase who was here because of sofia is the concrete foundation to all that is the hsmtmts fandom today and i will not stand for the way people drag my girl through the mud, it’s so frustrating.

I saw you mentioning that Matt and Josh are best friends, but I don't think they're as close as they used to be (they don't interact as much as they used to and they don't seem to be so supportive of each other as they used to; I think they're on good terms since Matt talked happily about the ejxricky battle with light swords and also put in his story andrew's tiktok with josh). From what I understand Josh went to Disneyland (I know there's one close to LA and one in Florida) and we know he was on a cruise (he may still be and just made a stop at Disneyland, in this case it can be from another continent also). But if he's not on the cruise anymore and he went to the one close to LA it doesn't look good to me... He really could've come.

It really makes me sad to see the actors not being as close... One thing that made me like this show so much was how close the cast was in s1. I know then the whole drama thing happened. But , now, it only seems to get worse. Matt and Josh aren't as close (I really hope there isn't a pb), Josh doesn't seem to be as close to the rest of the cast as he used to, Sofia unfollowed Matt on tiktok and she also didn't come to the premiere and she was in LA (here it seems to be a pb)...

I also saw that Sofia follows a few people on tiktok (do you know which of the cast she still follows there?).

Anon social media is not their entire life. We can’t assume anything according to who they follow or what they post or where they are. Josh and Sofia might be having their last moments of vacation because after hsmtmts press Sofia is gonna be on a marathon of SGE with its premieres in different countires and its press. Josh will be travelling the US and Europe for his tour like let’s give them a break.

POTENTIAL HSMTMTS EP 7 SPOILER WARNING (incase anyone cares)

I just assumed when they said the "leaks exaggerated" they meant that maybe Gina doesn't break up with EJ (Isabel said Gina's the one who initiates it) since the rest of their ask was about the pw breakup. As for that very last part about staring at each other, I'm gonna be honest, I don't think I registered that when I wrote my response lol (sorry to that anon!!) so I think I totally misunderstood. I realize now that they were probably trying to say that they think the leaks were exaggerating when they said that Ricky & Gina almost [redacted]. It's not an exaggeration though, it literally says "Ricky & Gina [redacted]!" twice on the shotlist for ep 7.

While I don't think it's what they're referencing, there is a moment during Prom where Ricky & Gina (supposedly) make eye contact across the dance floor, like they wish they were dancing with each other. I think it might be while Maddox & Jet are singing "Wouldn't Change a Thing" but I'm not totally sure.

Side note: is it dumb that I keep censoring the [redacted]? I'm sure most people know by now, I just don't want to ruin it for anybody who doesn't.

but i have had some r*nas coming onto my anti r*na posts and saying things like i shouldn't talk about them, which is wack, or that i "don't understand" r*na when i just mentioned canon scenes that happened like there's not anything to misunderstand there lol. in those cases, i don't know why they feel the need to go onto posts clearly tagged anti their ship.

there really is a lot of policing of ships with r*na, like the way a lot of them reacted when people started shipping jetwen?? gloating about how it was never going to happen and people who shipped it were racist and anti gina and all these things??? assuming we would throw a fit if jetwen didn't happen when many of them threw fits over portwell?? anytime anyone mentioned a Ricky ship that wasn't with gina i saw r*nas quick to shut that down.

also the fact that they're using the portwell tag to gloat is just so messed up. why do they feel the need. especially because in my opinion there's not much to gloat about. to get canon r*na, they had to write portwell completely out of character and absolutely destroy them, and even the r*na confession confirmed a lot of anti-r*na's suspicions/beliefs that r*na isn't great for Gina, because Gina ended up having to be the one doing all the work to make the relationship start, ricky's past mistakes are ignored, and he doesn't have to do anything or put himself out there in the same way gina always ends up having to

do you think it’s possible that instead of nini, lily could end up being ricky’s endgame? i’ve started to consider it as a possibility given the writers likely wanting to avoid the irl drama and surrounding implications of putting ricky and nini as the actual endgame of the show the way it was almost certainly planned… plus ork’s been upped to a series regular, and she’s likely going back to east high imo if there’s a fourth season…

if they write it well i genuinely don’t think people would hate it as much as they think they do at the current moment, and while olivia rose keegan’s write up when she was announced called lily a freshman, in the show it’s never mentioned so that doesn’t have to be true for canon. plus ork is even a year older than josh, so there’s not the same age issue like with sofia that people have talked about with por.twell and such…

That would be a hell of a twist anon but even assuming that Olivia and Josh just refuse to act out romantic Rini scenes again I can't see Rily being endgame unless for some reason Sofia has left the show before the series finale. And if for some reason both a Rini and Rina endgame was not an option then I think it's much more likely that Ricky just ends the series single. I can't remember if Lily's age was ever mentioned in S2 but it's likely that there was a reason that she was written as a freshman and it will probably factor into the show in some way and that age gap would be a serious obstacle to them being endgame. Plus I think Tim knows that at least one combination of the core 4 needs to endgame in order for the series to have a satisfactory ending.

I do agree with you that the audience will probably come to like Rily. It's likely that a significant portion of Ricky's screen time in S3 will be with Lily, the likely secret romance tropes they'll be playing with are fun to watch if done right, and Ricky is always at his most charming when he's romancing someone who likes him back so I think there will be some very sweet Rily scenes before disaster inevitably strikes. And I do think that a lot of people aren't factoring in that Rily is likely together for most, if not nearly all, of S3. What exactly Lily's role would be after S3 is anyone's guess, Tim has referred to her as an agent of chaos which makes her the closest thing this show has to a Cheryl Blossom. She certainly brings some much needed Glee S1, 2, and 6 energy to HSMTMTS which is something the show could use more of so Tim could definitely keep around for the rest of the series in some capacity.
