As I begin the next chapter of research into my grandfather's journey through World War 2, I am focusing on his whereabouts betwen 1941 and 1945.
We believe some of this time was spent detained in a PoW camp, but we are not yet sure which one. We have a photo and anecdotal stories passed down the family. I also have a series of replies from official bodies saying they have no record of my grandfather.
During the height of the conflicts in Wolrd War 2, there were over 1000 camps for detainees, including Concentration Camps, Transit Camps and Prisoner of War Camps.
A needle in a haystack doesn't even begin to cover what I am trying find, and so to try and help narrow things down, and to provide some context and clairty of definitions, I am starting with some of the basics before investigating which camps he could possibly have been detained in.
What is a Prisoner of War?
A prisoner of war (PoW) is "A combatant who falls into the hands of an adverse party...in the course of an international armed conflict".
The rights afforded PoW's also stretches to civilians, so that any persons "who fall into the hands of the enemy during an armed conflict are protected under humanitarian law. If the individual is a combatant, he or she is accorded protection as a prisoner of war. If the individual is a civilian, he or she is protected as such." (Medecins Sans Frontieres)
Under the Geneva Convention, which at the time of Word War 2 was in its second iteration, and hence why I am flipping into past tense here, Prisoners of War and other civilian detainess were granted legal rights of protection.
To oversee these rights, the International Committe of the Red Cross (ICRC) were entrusted with a central role of "protecting the dignity and wellebing of PoWs". With the responsibility of monitoring conditions of those detained, the ICRC would attempt to visit camps and interview those detained.
However, during the Second World War, when attempting to access those captured by the Germans, this was not straightforward. German Red Cross had been pulled into being state owned and was no more than a puppet committee, and they did not comply with the ICRC's demands to visit detainees.
On 29 April 1942, the German Red Cross informed the ICRC that it would not communicate any information on "non-Aryan" detainees, and asked it to refrain from asking questions about them.
The ICRC have since acknowledged they were "impotent" during the Nazi regime.
So although no official records seem to exist for my grandfather thus far(acknowledging that I haven't completed all my investigations), I am slightly encouraged.
At first I felt that no records existed because he wasn't technically a PoW as he wasn't a combatant, which I assumed due to his age at this time. Of course it is possible he was a member of the Yugoslav Partisans at the age of 18 - we know that other members of our family were part of Tito's Partisan army.
However, it is just as possible, if not more likely, that he was captured by the Italians as a Slovene, and simply not visited by the Red Cross, especially given the difficulties they were having with Germany (which I read as all Axis powers).
Now I can understand why I have received responses From the ICRC stating that they have no known records of my grandfather during this time. I can also understand why no records exist from the former Yugoslavia, given this country no longer exists and many records were destroyed during the conflict of the early 1990s.
But with this clarity on the definitions surrounding Prisoners of War, along with this context and background of how PoWs were treated and monitored, I can start to find a way of narrowing down my searches and focus my investigations to find my grandfather in and amongst the historical chaos and confusion of the Second World War.

2024 / 36 - Abridged vacation edition
Aperçu of the week
“Human dignity is inviolable.”
(Article 1 of the Basic Law, Constitution of the Federal Republic of Germany)
Bad News of the Week
It is well known that life in Afghanistan is not exactly a paradise. The Taliban rule with an absolute power that interferes so deeply in people's everyday lives that it can safely be described as invasive. Now a new law of the guardians of morality is coming into force, which - of course - further restricts the lives of women.
Men are not allowed to wear shorts or to practice martial arts. And must grow a beard if working in public service. But that is nothing compared to the restrictions for women. They are only allowed to attend school up to the 6th grade, are virtually excluded from working life, must always be fully veiled and are not even allowed to leave the house without a male escort. Now even singing or speaking out loud is forbidden - with the threat of a prison sentence. Why? Because the female voice is seductive and men should not be tempted.
Ravina Shamdasani from the UN Human Rights Office in Geneva puts her horror at this development into words: “The newly passed law cements a policy that completely erases women in public life, silences them and takes away their independence by trying to turn them into faceless, mute shadows. That is intolerable!”
The fact that the German government wants to negotiate with the Taliban right now about the repatriation of rejected asylum seekers is at least as intolerable. This is, of course, a reaction to the completely exaggerated cries of the extreme parties that the allegedly excessive migration is the root of all evil. And, in my opinion, it calls into question the principle of asylum. Because the definition of “imminent threat to life” should also include the absence of fundamental human rights: a life that is not worth living is just an existence.
Good News of the Week
German democracy is celebrating its 75th anniversary. After the darkest chapter in its history, the Germans have created the foundations of a liberal, egalitarian society with a democratic basic order. With a classic division of powers in the legislative, executive and judicial branches, unshakeable principles of human rights, freedom and social participation as well as balanced federalism.
The Bundestag (parliament) and Bundesrat (representation of the federal states) are therefore celebrating their birthday. They look back on the past with satisfaction, but express concerns about the future. Liberal democracy is under pressure from authoritarian forces worldwide, says former Federal Minister of the Interior Gerhart Baum in a speech. At 91, he is also a contemporary witness and knows what he is talking about. Bundestag President Bärbel Bas commented: “We can overcome crises - despite tough controversies. Our democracy is strong and resilient against all those who want to harm it." If she is right, Germany can look to the future with confidence.
Personal happy moment of the week
My own children finally got to meet my sisters' children (from my youthful stay abroad in Canada 37 years ago). And it was as if they had known each other forever. I would be very happy if that would last - even across the Atlantic and across time.
I couldn't care less...
...that the US Republican campaign team feels disadvantaged that the film “The Apprentice” about the dubious rise of Donald Trump is now being released in US cinemas before the elections. The guy is already getting away with his delaying tactics in so many (even court!) proceedings that I'm pleased about every confrontation that actually takes place. And that confronts him with his infinite body of lies.
It's fine with me...
...that an international comparative study has now also confirmed the positive effect of a cell phone ban in schools. Researchers at the Chair of School Education at the University of Augsburg came to this conclusion and published their findings in the journal Education Sciences: a smartphone ban has measurably positive effects on the social well-being of pupils and on their learning performance. Our school has been doing this since the first iPhone. And is obviously right to do so.
As I write this...
...the - voted out - democrats in the eastern German states are trying to form majorities without the radical right-wing AfD (Alternative für Deutschland / Alternative for Germany). This party owes it above all to the very young and the very old voters to have become the second strongest (in Saxony) or even the strongest (in Thuringia) party in the state elections. Sometimes democracy has to act against the declared will of the voters in order to protect itself.
Post Scriptum
The summer of 2024 was warmer than ever before since complete records began in 1940. According to the EU climate service Copernicus, the current year as a whole is also heading for a record high. In the past, people would have been happy about “the nice weather”. Today, people are afraid of the next forest fire and water sources drying up. And we are still not prepared to do what is necessary.

I'm always up for some fun 😁
[TAG SOMEONE YOU WANT TO KNOW AND/OR SOME OF YOUR BESTIES]
favourite colour: I might have picked a definite answer when I was younger but as of now I've come to the conclusion that I like all colours. Would I paint my walls bright pink? Probably not. Would I wear a sunny yellow dress? Probably also no, because I have the skin colour of untoasted white bread and it would look absolutely awful. So it really depends what item is supposed to have a specific colour and what mood I'm in.
last song: something from my Good Omens playlist, apparently "All I Want" by Kodaline.
last movie: Spider-Man - No Way Home while being sick, but really only half-assed, scrolling tumblr and stuff while doing so. I only just realise, that I could have watched Venom - Let there be carnage instead, which I might have enjoyed more.
currently watching: Loki season 2 and Sex Education Season 4, I also want to watch The Fall Of The House Of Usher
other stuff I watched this year: The complete 5 seasons of The Dragon Prince, all of the 13th Doctor (was pushing this off the whole time but finally wanted to keep up to be prepared for the upcoming 60th Anniversary special), Good Omens season 2 of course (and rewatched seaosn 1), all 3 seasons of Staged (highly recommend for GO fans!), the final season of Disenchantment, the 3rd season of The Witcher (I'll most probably drop it now that Henry Cavill isn't playing Geralt anymore), Sandman season 1, Star Trek Picard season 3, The Mandalorian season 3, Shadow and Bone season 2 - man, I watched way more than I would have thought and I probably forgot something! What the Hell! Definitely watched some new season of Rick and Morty as well...
shows I dropped this year: I don't think I really dropped something this year but I didn't pick up The Boys again after season 1 yet. Just never was in the mood for it.
currently reading: Graham. Green - Doctor Fisher of Geneva or The Bomb Party and The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub which I've started ages ago and got stuck somewhere in the middle. Next up: The Crow Road by Iain Banks.
currently listening to: my Good Omens playlist, here are some of my favourites
David Arnolds soundtrack for the 2nd season of Good Omens and the soundtrack for Oppenheimer by Ludwig Göransson.
currently working on: tidying my desk so I can see the surface again and don't have to shuffle books and stuff around to connect my laptop for work, convertig the old super small flat of my granny along with part of a barn to an actual house (well, kind of) to live in and fighting the German authorities for it (a flaming sword would be really handy right now), oh and trying to write a Good Omens post season 2 fanfic in English, which is not my native tongue, as well as having ideas for an original story I should probably write in German since that IS my first language, but it somehow frightens me even more.
current obsessions: Good Omens and everything connected to it, no competitors. The brain rot is real!
That was really fun! 😁
Thank you so much @theonevoice for tagging me in this.
I absolutely have to tag my internet friend (if I dare saying so) @turquoisedata as well as @demonic-mnemonic who's Good Omens content and especially poetry I enjoy very much.

KE AUPUNI UPDATE - NOVEMBER 2023
When Lāhainā Was the Capital After his victory at the Battle of Nuʻuanu in 1795, the archipelago (except for Kauaʻi and Niʻihau) came under the singular rule of Kamehameha the Great, King of the island of Hawaiʻi. Thus, was born what eventually became known as the Hawaiian Kingdom. In an absolute monarchy, the King is the government. Wherever the King is, thatʻs where the government is. This means wherever the king lived, that was the capital. To make sure Oʻahu was firmly under control, after the Battle of Nuʻuanu, King Kamehameha remained on Oʻahu for a year (1795-1796). Because he lived in Waīkikī, the seat of government, the first capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom, was Waīkikī. When King Kamehameha relocated from Waīkikī to Hilo in 1796, Hilo became the capital. In 1802 Kamehameha moved to Lāhainā, and that became the capital until 1812 when Kamehameha set up his home at Kamakahonu in Kailua-Kona (where the Kailua Pier, Ahuʻena Heiau and the King Kamehameha Hotel are now located) making Kailua-Kona the capital. There, in May of 1819 King Kamehameha the Great joined his ancestors, and his son, Liholiho, ascended the throne as Kamehameha II. The next year, after welcoming the first party of missionaries from America at Kamakahonu, King Kamehameha II relocated to Mokuʻula in Lāhainā and Lāhainā again became the capital. After the death of Liholiho in 1824, King Kamehameha III (Kauikeaouli) and the royal family continued to live in and rule from Lāhainā as the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Thus, Lāhainā was the nation’s capital during the crucial, formative years of the Hawaiian Kingdom. King Kamehameha III oversaw the transformation of his domain, the Kingdom of the Hawaiian Islands, into an independent, highly enlightened, literate, progressive sovereign country. Literacy and education was a high priority and hundreds of schools sprang up all over the islands. The first high school “west of the Mississippi River” was Lahainaluna High School, overlooking Lāhainā. The first Hawaiian scholars (in the western sense) like historians David Malo and Samuel Kamakau and Kamehameha III’s closest friend and consummate diplomat, Timoteo Haʻalilio, were graduates of Lahainaluna School. During those years at Lāhainā Kamehameha III issued the Hawaiian Declaration of Rights (1839); promulgated the first Constitution for the Kingdom of the Hawaiian Islands (1840); converted His government from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy; dispatched the envoys Haʻalilio, Richards and Simpson to Europe to petition for recognition of the Hawaiian Kingdom as a sovereign nation; weathered the “Paulet Affair” which ended peacefully with Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea, Sovereignty Restoration Day. It was while the Kingdom’s capital was in Lahaina that King Kamehameha III received the news that his envoys were successful in securing the recognition of Hawaii’s sovereignty through the Joint Proclamation by the United Kingdom, and the Kingdom of France (followed by the USA, Belgium, and so forth). The day became known as Lā Kuʻokoʻa (Independence Day), and later this month, on November 28th, Hawaiians and friends in Hawaiʻi and around the world will be celebrating the 180th anniversary of our independence. EDITOR: I submitted information to The Journal that I feel needs to be covered in its entirety over the next few issues to try to capture the love in this community that has spanned generations and families. Over the course of the next few issues I want to share the heart of Christine Burgess. LRM
Pat’s Cash and Carry 50th Anniversary: Pat’s Cash and Carry began in 1973, when Christine and Perry Burgess bought the business from Eddie and Geneva Townes. Later they purchased the building and property from the landowner, the Oxford Oil Company in the 1990s.
Christine and Perry both have passed but leave behind children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to carry on the business in their place.
“Pat’s” has been a vital part in the Burgess family, where all the family came together. Teresa, Chris, and Mark, children of Perry and Christine congregated there with friends, helped their parents, and celebrated their own birthday parties there. When they all married and had children of their own, again, Pat’s was a home away from home for all the grandchildren. And, today, great-grandchildren.

ASHTON RECALLS by Ashton Hester SALEM WAS ON THE MOVE 70 YEARS AGO - (Editor's note: There was a lengthy story in the June 17, 1953 Keowee Courier with the headline "Progress At Salem Going On And On." I will post the story in segments over the next few weeks. Following is the first segment). . .Chartered as a municipality only slightly more than two years ago, Salem today is experiencing civic growing pains, and its citizens are getting a kick out of watching it grow. . .One of its topmost expansion projects is the proposed straightening of the town's Main street, and Mayor Clyde Talley told the Courier Friday that highway crews only the other day had run some survey lines that must precede the actual beginning of work. . .The job is to be somewhat of a major operation since it will necessitate the moving back of several stores on one side of the thoroughfare and the moving of several houses on the other side. . .However, the Salem council is laying a firm foundation for the town's future in street building. With this accomplished, any future council will be able to lay out additional streets in squares and blocks. . .Another progressive venture is that a specially appointed committee of Salem men is hard at work right now on preliminary plans for obtaining suitable land and erecting a building for an industry, Paintset Fashions, Inc., which has indicated its strong desire to begin operation in the immediate area sometime around the first of next year. . .Paintset already has two plants in Walhalla, and they employ a goodly number of Salemites. Plans are for these employees to be shifted to the Salem plant, so that they will be working nearer their homes. . .Successful completion of this venture would mark Salem's first large-scale home industrial payroll--outside its fruitful lumber trade, of course. . .TO BE CONTINUED NEXT ISSUE

Paul McCartney Is Still Trying to Figure Out Love – The New York Times Magazine
By David Marchese, Nov. 29, 2020
Paul McCartney, like the rest of us, this year found himself with an unexpected amount of time stuck indoors. Unlike the rest of us — or most of us, anyway — he used that time to record a new album. The pandemic-induced circumstances of its creation may mark “McCartney III” as an outlier in the former Beatle’s catalog, but as its title suggests, it does have precedents: Like “McCartney” (1970) and “McCartney II” (1980), the album, out Dec. 18, was primarily recorded by McCartney alone, with him playing nearly all the instruments and handling all the production. “At no point,” McCartney said, “did I think: I’m making an album. I’d better be serious. This was more like: You’re locked down. You can do whatever the hell you want.” Which was a gas, as always. “What I’m amazed with,” McCartney explained, “is that I’m not fed up with music. Because, strictly speaking, I should have gotten bored years ago.”
It seems to me that working on music by yourself, as you did on the new album, might allow for some insights about what you do and how you do it. So are there aspects of “McCartney III” that represent creative growth to you?
The idea of growing and adding more arrows to your bow is nice, but I’m not sure if I’m interested in it. The thing is, when I look back to “Yesterday,” which was written when I was 21 or something, there’s me talking like a 90-year-old: “Suddenly I’m not half the man I used to be.” Things like that and “Eleanor Rigby” have a kind of wisdom. You would naturally think, OK, as I get older I’m going to get deeper, but I’m not sure that’s true. I think it’s a fact of life that personalities don’t change much. Throughout your life, there you are.
Is there anything different about the nature of your musical gift today at 78 than in 1980 or 1970 or when you first started writing songs?
It’s the story that you’re telling. That changes. When I first said to John, “I’ve written a few songs,” they were simple. My first song was called “I Lost My Little Girl” — four chords. Then we went into the next phase of songwriting, which was talking to our fans. Those were songs like “Thank You Girl,” “Love Me Do,” “Please Please Me.” Then came a rich vein as we got more mature, with things like “Let It Be,” “The Long and Winding Road.” But basically I think it’s all the same, and you get lucky sometimes. Like, “Let It Be” came from a dream where my mother had said that phrase. “Yesterday” came from a dream of a melody. I’m a great believer in dreams. I’m a great rememberer of dreams.
What’s the last interesting dream you had?
Last night’s was pretty good.
What was it?
It was of a sexual nature, so I’m not sure it’s good for the Kids section. Pretty cool, though. Very interesting, dreams of a sexual nature when you’re married. Because your married head is in the dream saying: “Don’t do this. Don’t go here.” And just to let you know, I didn’t. It was still a good dream.
You know, I was conscious of not mentioning the Beatles early in this interview, and you’ve already mentioned them a few times. So let me ask you: The band broke up 50 years ago. You were in it for roughly 10 years. When you’re not doing interviews or playing concerts, how central to your own story of your life are those 10 years from half a century ago?
Very. It was a great group. That’s commonly acknowledged.
Generally speaking.
[Laughs.] It’s like your high school memories — those are my Beatles memories. This is the danger: At a dinner party, I am liable to tell stories about my life, and people already know them. I can see everyone stifling a yawn. But the Beatles are inescapable. My daughter Mary will send me a photo or a text a few times a week: “There you were on an advert” or “I heard you on the radio.” The thing that amazes me now, because of my venerable age, is that I will be with, like, one of New York’s finest dermatologists, and he will be a rabid Beatles fan. All of that amazes me. We were trying to get known, we were trying to do good work and we did it. So to me, it’s all happy memories.
“McCartney III” will come out very close to the 40th anniversary of John Lennon’s death. Has your processing of what happened to him changed over the years?
It’s difficult for me to think about. I rerun the scenario in my head. Very emotional. So much so that I can’t really think about it. It kind of implodes. What can you think about that besides anger, sorrow? Like any bereavement, the only way out is to remember how good it was with John. Because I can’t get over the senseless act. I can’t think about it. I’m sure it’s some form of denial. But denial is the only way that I can deal with it. Having said that, of course I do think about it, and it’s horrible. You do things to help yourself out of it. I did an interview with Sean, his son. That was nice — to talk about how cool John was and fill in little gaps in his knowledge. So it’s little things that I am able to do, but I know that none of them can get over the hill and make it OK. But you know, after he was killed, he was taken to Frank Campbell’s funeral parlor in New York. I’m often passing that. I never pass it without saying: “All right, John. Hi, John.”
And how about your perspective on the work you did together? Has that changed?
I always thought it was good. I still think it’s good. Sometimes I had to reassure him that it was good. I remember one time he said to me: “What are they going to think of me when I’m dead? Am I going to be remembered?” I felt like the older brother, even though he was older than me. I said: “John, listen to me. You are going to be so remembered. You are so [expletive] great that there’s no way that this disappears.” I guess that was a moment of insecurity on his part. He straightened me up on other occasions. It was a great collaboration. I can’t think of any better collaboration, and there have been millions. I feel very lucky. We happened upon each other in Liverpool through a friend of mine, Ivan Vaughan. Ivan said, “I think you’d like this mate of mine.” Everyone’s lives have magic, but that guy putting me and John together and then George getting on a bus — an awful lot of coincidences had to happen to make the Beatles.
People always ask you about John. I’ve noticed they rarely ask about George, who of course also died relatively young.
John is probably the one in the group you would remember, but the circumstances of his death were particularly harrowing. When you die horrifically, you’re remembered more. But I like your point, which is: What about George? I often think of George because he was my little buddy. I was thinking the other day of my hitchhiking bursts. This was before the Beatles. I suddenly was keen on hitchhiking, so I sold this idea to George and then John.
I know this memory. You and George hitchhiked to Paignton.
Yeah, Exeter and Paignton. We did that, and then I also hitchhiked with John. He and I got as far as Paris. What I was thinking about was — it’s interesting how I was the instigator. Neither of them came to me and said, “Should we go hitchhiking?” It was me, like, “I’ve got this great idea.”
Why is that interesting?
My theory is that attitude followed us into our recording career. Everyone was hanging out in the sticks, and I used to ring them up and say, “Guys, it’s time for an album.” Then we’d all come in, and they’d all be grumbling. “He’s making us work.” We used to laugh about it. So the same way I instigated the hitchhiking holidays, I would put forward ideas like, “It’s time to make an album.” I don’t remember Ringo, George or John ever ringing me up and saying that.
How strange is it to share an idle recollection from your youth, as you just did with that hitchhiking story, and then have the person to whom you’re sharing it — in this case, me — know the memory? It seems as though it would be weird.
It’s quite annoying, David. It’s like people at dinner yawning when I’m telling stories. This keeps happening to me.
I even know the details. You and George slept on the beach.
That’s right.
Some Salvation Army girls kept you warm.
Yes.
Then at some point you sat on a car battery and zapped your ass?
That was George who did that! I have a very clear recollection. He showed me the scar. Let’s set the record straight: It was George’s ass, and it was a burn the exact shape of a zip from his jeans.
Do you remember the last thing George said to you?
We said silly things. We were in New York before he went to Los Angeles to die, and they were silly but important to me. And, I think, important to him. We were sitting there, and I was holding his hand, and it occurred to me — I’ve never told this — I don’t want to hold George’s hand. You don’t hold your mate’s hands. I mean, we didn’t anyway. And I remember he was getting a bit annoyed at having to travel all the time — chasing a cure. He’d gone to Geneva to see what they could do. Then he came to a special clinic in New York to see what they could do. Then the thought was to go to L.A. and see what they could do. He was sort of getting a bit, “Can’t we just stay in one place?” And I said: “Yes, Speke Hall. Let’s go to Speke Hall.” That was one of the last things we said to each other, knowing that he would be the only person in the room who would know what Speke Hall was. You probably know what the hell it is.
Yep.
I can’t amaze you with anything! Anyway, the nice thing for me when I was holding George’s hands, he looked at me, and there was a smile.
How many good Beatles stories are there left to tell that haven’t been told?
There are millions. Sometimes the reason is that they’re too private, and I don’t want to go gossiping. But the main stories do get told and told again.
Can you think of one now that you haven’t told before?
Hmm. I will rake through the embers. Oh, I’ll tell you one! I thought of one this morning. It’s pretty good. I don’t think I’ve told it. You’re going to have to say in the article, “I forced this out of him,” because it’s a bit telling-out-of-school.
I am hereby twisting your arm.
So when we did the album “Abbey Road,” the photographer was set up and taking the pictures that ended up as the album cover. Linda was also there taking incidental pictures. She has some that are of us — I think it was all four of us — sitting on the steps of Abbey Road studios, taking a break from the session, and I’m in quite earnest conversation with John. This morning I thought, I remember why. John’s accountants had rung my accountants and said: “Someone’s got to tell John he’s got to fill in his tax returns. He’s not doing it.” So I was trying to say to him, “Listen, man, you’ve got to do this.” I was trying to give him the sensible advice on not getting busted for not doing your taxes. That’s why I looked so earnest. I don’t think I’ve told that story before.
Tax filings — that’s some deep arcana.
I have dredged the barrel.
I know that your goal with making music is to do something that pleases yourself. What’s most pleasing to you on the new album?
I’m very happy with “Women and Wives.” I’ve been reading a book about Lead Belly. I was looking at his life and thinking about the blues scene of that day. I love that tone of voice and energy and style. So I was sitting at my piano, and I’m thinking about Huddie Ledbetter, and I started noodling around in the key of D minor, and this thing came to me. “Hear me women and wives” — in a vocal tone like what I imagine a blues singer might make. I was taking clues from Lead Belly, from the universe, from blues. And why I’m pleased with it is because the lyrics are pretty good advice. It’s advice I wouldn’t mind getting myself.
There’s a song on “McCartney III,” “Pretty Boys,” that is kind of unusual for you in how the music is sort of unassuming but the lyrics have an almost sinister edge. What inspired that one?
I’ll tell you exactly. I’ve been photographed by many photographers through the years. And when you get down to London, doing sessions with people like David Bailey, they can get pretty energetic in the studio. It’s like “Blow-Up,” [the director Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1966 film thriller about a fashion photographer, thought to be loosely based on David Bailey] you know? “Give it to me! [Expletive] the lens!” And it’s like: “What? No, I’m not going to.” But I understand why they’re doing that. They’re that kind of artist. So you allow it. Certain photographers — they tend to be very good photographers, by the way — can be totally out of line in the studio. So “Pretty Boys” is about male models. And going around New York or London, you see the lines of bicycles for hire. It struck me that they’re like models, there to be used. It’s most unfortunate.
“Lavatory Lil” is another song I was curious about. That’s quite a title.
“Lavatory Lil” is a parody of someone I didn’t like. Someone I was working with who turned out to be a bit of a baddie. I thought things were great; it turned nasty. So I made up the character Lavatory Lil and remembered some of the things that had gone on and put them in the song. I don’t need to be more specific than that. I will never divulge who it was.
I have another bigger-picture question. In your experience, how is the love in a marriage different at different stages of your life and in different marriages?
I don’t think it’s different. It’s always a splendid puzzle. Even though I write love songs, I don’t think I know what’s going on. It would be great if it was smooth and wonderful all the time, but you get pockets of that, and sometimes it’s — you could be annoying. To Nancy I’m pretty complex, with everything I’ve been through.
In what ways?
I’m some poor working-class kid from Liverpool. I’ve done music all my life. I’ve had huge success, and people often try to do what I want, so you get a false feeling of omnipotence. All that together makes a complex person. We’re all complex. Well, maybe I’m more complex than other people because of coming from poverty.
And how do you think about money these days?
It has obviously changed. What has stayed the same is the central core. When I was in Liverpool as a kid, I used to listen to people’s conversations. I remember a couple of women going on about money: “Ah, me and my husband, we’re always arguing about money.” And I remember thinking very consciously, “OK, I’ll solve that; I will try to get money.” That set me off on the “Let’s not have too many problems with money” trail. What happened also was, not having much money, when anything came into the house, it was important. It was important when my weekly comic was delivered. Or my penpal — I had a penpal in Spain, Rodrigo — when his letter came through, that was a big event. When they had giveaways in comics with little trinkets, I kept them all. Some people would say that’s a hoarding instinct, but not having anything when I was a kid has stuck with me as far as money. You know, I’m kind of crazy. My wife is not. She knows you can get rid of things you don’t need.
You’re a hoarder?
I’m a keeper. If I go somewhere and I get whatever I bought in a nice bag, I will want to keep the bag. My rationale is that I might want to put my sandwiches in it tomorrow. Whereas Nancy says, “We’ll get another bag.” In that way, my attitude toward money hasn’t changed that much. It’s the same instinct to preserve. One of the great things now about money is what you can do with it. Family and friends, if they have any medical problem, I can just say, “I’ll help.” The nicest thing about having money is you can help people with it.
Something that has been a constant for you musically is your ability to keep coming up with melodies. It’s there on the new album — the melodies all flow. Is your facility for writing a catchy melody ever an obstacle to getting the songs to be more than just catchy? Because a good tune by itself is not always enough to make a good song. “Bip Bop” would be an example of that. Do you know what I’m saying?
No, I know. “Bip Bop” is not lyrically stunning. I was always embarrassed about that song. Literally, it goes, “Bip Bop / take your bottom dollar.” It’s inconsequential. But I mentioned that to a friend, a producer, a few years ago, and he said, “That’s my favorite song of yours.” So you don’t know what people like. It’s enough if I like it and enjoyed putting it on record and don’t particularly want to think of any more lyrics. I don’t want to sweat it. Sometimes maybe it would be better if I sweated it. Once or twice I tried to sweat it, and I hated it. It’s like, What are you doing this for?
Sixty-something years into writing songs, do you feel any closer to knowing where melodies come from?
No. There is something with my ability to write music that I don’t think I’m necessarily responsible for. It just seems to come easier to me — touch wood — than it does to some people. That’s it. I’m a fortunate man.
#paul mccartney#old paul#grandpaul#*m#(the start of the interview was pretty worrying (with him bringing up yesterday like after 5 seconds) but actually?#it turned out to be a decent one)#favourite bit hands down paul's dirty dreams. DUDE... he cannot keep it in his pants even when he is in his dreams#well actually he said he did but lmao#but yeah many other great bits. ''i'm a keeper'' ... loved that one#the complex man rant#and the john and george bits#him being the instigator#!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i love this guy :)

Rash of mass shootings stirs US fears heading into summer (AP) Two people were killed and at least 30 others wounded in mass shootings overnight in three states, authorities said Saturday, stoking concerns that a spike in U.S. gun violence could continue into summer as coronavirus restrictions ease and more people are free to socialize. The attacks took place late Friday or early Saturday in the Texas capital of Austin, Chicago and Savannah, Georgia. In Austin, authorities said they arrested one of two male suspects and were searching for the other after a shooting early Saturday on a crowded pedestrian-only street packed with bars and restaurants. Fourteen people were wounded, including two critically, in the gunfire, which the city’s interim police chief said is believed to have started as a dispute between two parties. In Chicago, a woman was killed and nine other people were wounded when two men opened fire on a group standing on a sidewalk in the Chatham neighborhood on the city’s South Side. In the south Georgia city of Savannah, police said one man was killed and seven other people were wounded in a mass shooting Friday evening.
Summer camps return but with fewer campers and counselors (AP) Overnight summer camps will be allowed in all 50 states this season, but COVID-19 rules and a pandemic labor crunch mean that many fewer young campers will attend, and those who do will have to observe coronavirus precautions for the second consecutive year. “Camp might look a little different, but camp is going to look a lot better in 2021 than it did in 2020, when it didn’t happen,” said Matt Norman of Atlanta, who is getting ready to send his 12-year-old daughter to camp. Even though most camps will be open, reduced capacity necessitated by COVID-19 restrictions and the labor shortage will keep numbers well below a normal threshold of about 26 million summer campers, said Tom Rosenberg of the American Camp Association.
Mexico says COVID-19 has affected a fourth of its population (Reuters) About a quarter of Mexico’s 126 million people are estimated to have been infected with the coronavirus, the health ministry said on Friday, far more than the country’s confirmed infections. The 2020 National Health and Nutrition Survey (Ensanut) showed that about 31.1 million people have had the virus, the ministry said in a statement, citing Tonatiuh Barrientos, an official at the National Institute of Public Health. According to Barrientos, not all of the people in the survey’s estimate necessarily showed symptoms. The survey was based on interviews with people at 13,910 households between Aug. 17 and Nov. 14 last year, and confirmed preliminary results released in December.
Peru on edge as electoral board reviews result of disputed presidential election (Guardian) Peru was on a knife-edge on Friday as its electoral board reviewed ballots cast in the presidential election, after a challenge to the tally by the losing candidate Keiko Fujimori. The final tally gave the leftist teacher Pedro Castillo a razor-thin 50.17% to 49.83% advantage over his rightwing rival Fujimori, which amounts to about 60,000 votes. However, the country’s electoral authority has yet to confirm the win, and Fujimori, the scion of a controversial political dynasty, has refused to concede. She alleges fraud, even though national and international observers said the vote was clean, and has called for up to 500,000 votes to be nullified or reexamined, forcing the electoral board to conduct a review of ballots.
For Cornwall, G7 summit brings disruption (AP) Towering steel fences, masses of police, protests on the beach: The Cornish seaside’s turquoise waters and white sandy beaches are looking decidedly less idyllic this week as leaders of the Group of Seven wealthy democracies descend for a summit. U.S. President Joe Biden and leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan are arriving for three days of talks starting Friday at the tiny village of Carbis Bay, near St. Ives in Cornwall. The region is a popular holiday destination in the southwestern tip of England. Locals may be used to crowds and traffic jams during the peak summer tourist season, but the disruptions caused by the summit are on another level. A naval frigate dominates the coastline, armed soldiers guard the main sites and some 5,000 extra police officers have been deployed to the area. Authorities have even hired a cruise ship with a capacity of 3,000, moored offshore, to accommodate some of the extra officers. A main road is closed for the whole week, and local train lines and bus services have been shut down. A 3-meter (10-foot) tall metal fence nicknamed the “ring of steel” has been erected around Treganna Castle in Carbis Bay, where world leaders will stay. Security is also tight in the nearby town of Falmouth, the main base for international media covering the summit.
World leaders are in England, but beautiful British beaches have stolen the show (Washington Post) When President Biden shared a photo to Twitter on Thursday of him standing alongside British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and gazing out onto an unspoiled, sandy white beach from the Group of Seven summit in Cornwall, England, the post was supposed to be a tribute to the “special relationship” between the United Kingdom and the United States. But to many, it was the image of the picturesque coast that stood out. It looked somewhat suspicious. Too good to be true. Others questioned the authenticity of the scene, wondering whether it was photoshopped. Although it is true that some of Britain’s beaches have a reputation for pebbles, angry seagulls that steal food from unsuspecting tourists and diapers that float in murky waters, the county of Cornwall boasts some of the country’s best seaside destinations—complete with calm, clear waters that are perfect for swimming in and long stretches of soft sand that attract families from around the world. Carbis Bay is one of several beaches that make up St. Ives Bay, which, according to the Cornwall tourist board, is considered by the “Most Beautiful Bays in the World” organization to be one of the world’s best. The bay is described as being “surrounded by sub-tropical plants and lapped by turquoise waters.”
Ransomware’s suspected Russian roots point to a long detente between the Kremlin and hackers (Washington Post) The ransomware hackers suspected of targeting Colonial Pipeline and other businesses around the world have a strict set of rules. First and foremost: Don’t target Russia or friendly states. It’s even hard-wired into the malware, including coding to prevent hacks on Moscow’s ally Syria, according to cybersecurity experts who have analyzed the malware’s digital fingerprints. They say the reasons appear clear. “In the West you say, ‘Don’t . . . where you eat,’ ” said Dmitry Smilyanets, a former Russia-based hacker who is now an intelligence analyst at Recorded Future, a cybersecurity company with offices in Washington and other cities around the world. “It’s a red line.” Targeting Russia could mean a knock on the door from state security agents, he said. But attacking Western enterprises is unlikely to trigger a crackdown. The relationship between the Russian government and ransomware criminals allegedly operating from within the country is expected to be a point of tension between President Biden and Russia’s Vladimir Putin at their planned summit in Geneva on Wednesday. The United States has accused Russia of acting as a haven for hackers by tolerating their activities—as long as they are directed outside the country.
Pandemic relapse spells trouble for India’s middle class (AP) India’s economy was on the cusp of recovery from the first pandemic shock when a new wave of infections swept the country, infecting millions, killing hundreds of thousands and forcing many people to stay home. Cases are now tapering off, but prospects for many Indians are drastically worse as salaried jobs vanish, incomes shrink and inequality is rising. Decades of progress in alleviating poverty are imperiled, experts say, and getting growth back on track hinges on the fate of the country’s sprawling middle class. It’s a powerful and diverse group ranging from salaried employees to small business owners: many millions of people struggling to hold onto their hard-earned gains. The outbreak of the pandemic triggered the worst downturn since the Great Depression of the 1930s and as it gradually ebbs, many economies are bouncing back. India’s economy contracted 7.3% in the fiscal year that ended in March, worsening from a slump that slashed growth to 4% from 8% in the two years before the pandemic hit. Economists fear there will be no rebound similar to the ones seen in the U.S. and other major economies.
‘Xi Jinping is my spiritual leader’: China’s education drive in Tibet (Reuters) Under clear blue skies, rugged peaks and the spectacular Potala Palace, one image is ubiquitous in Tibet’s capital city Lhasa: portraits of Chinese President Xi Jinping and fellow leaders. China is broadening a political education campaign as it celebrates the 70th anniversary of its control over Tibet. Civilians and religious figures who the government arranged to be interviewed on the five-day trip pledged loyalty to the Communist Party and Xi. Asked who his spiritual leader was, a monk at Lhasa’s historic Jokhang temple named Xi. “I’m not drunk ... I speak freely to you,” said the monk named Lhakpa, speaking from a courtyard overlooked by security cameras and government observers. “The posters [of Xi] coincide with a massive political education programme which is called ‘feeling gratitude to the party’ education,” said Robert Barnett, a Tibetan studies veteran scholar at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies.
Long overlooked, Israel’s Arab citizens are increasingly asserting their Palestinian identity (Washington Post) Growing up in an Arab village in northern Israel in the 1990s, Mahmoud Abo Arisheh was sure of at least two things: He was Israeli, and he was not allowed to talk politics. “Be careful, or the Shin Bet will get you,” his parents told him, referring to Israel’s domestic security service. Decades later, much has changed: Abo Arisheh is a lawyer, a poet and a theater director in Jaffa. He attends protests and talks politics freely—in Arabic, Hebrew and English. And while his citizenship may remain Israeli, the identity most dear to him is that of a Palestinian. “I didn’t know anything about being Palestinian,” said the 32-year-old, “but then I opened my eyes.” And now, it seems, so are many others. In just the past month, Palestinian citizens of Israel—also known as Israeli Arabs—have risen up in mass, nationwide demonstrations to protest Israeli evictions and police raids. They have been arrested by the hundreds following some of the worst communal violence between Arabs and Jews in Israel’s post-independence history. For a community that is often overlooked despite numbering nearly 2 million people—or about 20 percent of the Israeli population—these are momentous days indeed.
Nigerian police fire tear gas to break up protests over rising insecurity (Reuters) Police fired tear gas and detained several demonstrators in the Nigerian cities of Lagos and Abuja on Saturday during protests over the country’s worsening security situation, Reuters witnesses said. Anger over mass kidnappings-for-ransom, a decade-long Islamist insurgency and a crackdown on protesters in Lagos last October has fueled demands for the government of President Muhammadu Buhari to do more to tackle violence and insecurity. Reuters witnesses in Lagos and Abuja saw police shooting their guns into the air and firing tear gas into the crowds to disperse the demonstrators, who held placards and chanted “Buhari must go”. Officers were also seen smashing mobile phones confiscated from protesters, who also denounced the country’s 33.3% unemployment rate.

Guardians of the Stones Chapter 16 A Wedding and An Anniversary
1747
Claire sits writing in her dairy. She started it at the castle when she first came through. She keeps it well hidden, as she doesn’t wish anyone to find out the full truth of her past. She is reliving her wedding day a year ago.
She recalls it like it was yesterday. The dress, borrowed from Ellen, adjusted to fit her, with bits of tarden, in the Fraser and Mackenzie colors, weaved in. She wished to represent her family.
Brian had offered to walk her down the aisle but she wanted Fergus. Brian understood. She smiled as she remembers her sons, all three. Her youngest, a month old, were being watched over by their grandma while Fergus comes up to her.
“Oh ma! You are so beautiful.” His dark eyes glow with joy.
“So do you. So handsome.” He was dressed in a kilt in the Fraser colors. She noticed something new on his kilt belt. “Oh. I see you have a dirk.”
“Aye ma. Da says at 13 I am old enough to carry one and need one to protect you.”
“That is very good Fergus.”
“Are you ready to go?” She smiled hugely as she takes his arm.
“Yes. I am very ready.”
She grins recalling her husbands confession, later that night, that he was so nervous, pacing back and forth.
“Why,” she had asked him, “we were already married?”
“But not before a priest, eh.”
She turns back to her diary as she recalls walking towards the kirk on her son's arm and the surprise that awaited them.
From out of nowhere came Geneva. She grappled for Claire. She is jerked behind Fergus, who has his dirk out. “You will not marry him. I am to be Mrs. Fraser!”
“You will leave my ma alone. She is already Mrs. Fraser!” Fergus yells out. The commotion draws Brian from the kirk's door where he waited to let Claire and his grandson in.
“Haven't you caused enough trouble! Be gone with you!” Two townsmen were brought out to take her away but Dougal got there first.
“I will take out this rubbish.” He tells them all. He told Claire later that Jamie, who also heard the scrimmage, wanted to come but he wouldn’t let him.
“Would be no good for him to see ye outside the kirk, eh.” Said with a wink. He made it back for the ceremony.
“Are you alright ma?”
“I am. Thanks to you. Your da will be so proud of you.” She remembers telling him. She retakes his arm. “Let's do this.” He proudly escorts her into the kirk.
She remembers everything. Their tenants lining the aisle. Her babies, in their grandma’s arms, starting to fuss when they se her and hushed by their grandma. Even at just a month, they know not to cross her. But most of all, the sight of Jamie.
A highlander in full regalia is an amazing sight, no matter how old or ill favored. A young and by no means ill favored one, like her husband, is breathtaking. And take her breath he does. In his highland kilt, fresh linen shirt, tarden over his shoulder, tucked into his belt, where his own dirk and sword, hanging on each side. His knee high laced up boots completed the look. She recalls the look on his face when he sees her.
They are full of light and love. Her knees get weak and it is only Fergus' support that get her down the aisle. Fergus places her hand in his da's. “You take care of her like I have.”
“I swear to son.” Satisfied joins his cousin, Hamish who had came for the wedding with Dougal. It is a simple ceremony. They hold tight to each other as the repeat the vows after Father Mackenzie. He kisses her with enthusiasm at the end.
A huge party had followed. They danced, drank, and ate, well into the night. He praised Fergus for his quick thinking and protection.
“She wasn’t to touch ma!” Fergus had replied, head held high and chest out.
“I am proud. You showed you are a man today.” Jamie had replied while pouring him a shot of whisky.
Later she recalls dancing close to Jamie and telling him that Fergus was now old enough to start seriously courting.
“Aye but not until he finds the love of his life like I did.”
Jamie walks in, startling her out of her recollections. She quickly hides her diary.
“Mon gaul, happy anniversary.”
“She smiles as he bends down to kiss her. “I was just remembering our wedding.”
“Were you now? Well I plan on spending every second with you. I've only one regret from that day.”
“A regret?”
“Aye that the twins age didn’t allow a proper wedding night. But, you see, I've already arranged for Willie and Robbie to spend tonight with their Auntie. I've a night to make up for.”
He is as good as his word.
2020
Fergus makes his way into the small kirk and meets the priest there. “I am Father Campbell. How may I help you son?”
“Fergus Fraser. I've found a diary from my ancestor, Claire Beauchamp Fraser. It tells the tale of…”
“I ken well. So you finally found her diary. Good. We've a lot to discuss.”

Saigon March 31 and May 3, 1967. Entered into force on May 3, 1967. 18 UST 546; TIAS 6262; 685 UNTS 207 (100)which is why was self America torn shred with the Republic of Vietnam by this bilateral treaty? Because America and the Republic of Vietnam had agreed to pay the taxation to each other, the American people and the Vietnamese people are equal to each other. So the Government of the United States of America and the Government of the Republic of Vietnam are too, no one government violated crime to each other.
(101) H.RES 293- Recognizing the 42nd anniversary of the Fall of Saigon on 30, 1975 -
According to this bill of the shameful of the United States Congress sending for the all of the Southern officers of prisoners of war a bitter-source scold because the US Congress has enacted H.R. 7885 Foreign Assistance Act in 1963 to persuade the Republic of Vietnam to fight against communism, but the end, the Government of the United States of America did not enforce this bill when America has sold off the Republic of Vietnam to communism. So the bill’s H.R 7885 had sold off the human rights, the Freedom, the sovereignty, and all of the sacred dignity of the Vietnamese people, and the Republic of Vietnam to communism during America has deprived rights of the life of the Southern people and the Southern officers. Let America play the inhuman war in South Vietnam. In contrast, America has forcefully forced us to cut and run out of the Republic of Vietnam when we, the Southern Officers, did not only betray our ancestors but also had the treason our fatherland to let us follow behind the American Armed Forces. Even worse, the Government of the United States of America has sold us to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. Therefore, the North Government did not only imprison us but also nationalized all of our properties and small business. Let us come to the United States when we did not have earned any benefits of prisoners of war but also had some years nearby, the United States Congress has enacted for a few of the bills dug up so many conditional ashamed of both sides. One is the great power of America has ___________
(100) the agreements listed below were in force between the United States and the Republic of Viet-Nam (South Viet-Nam). The status of these agreements remain under review by the United States
(101) Honors: the contributions of Vietnamese Americans to the United States over the last 42 years and their tireless commitment to upholding freedom and democracy in Vietnam; the service of members of the U.S. Armed Forces and of the South Vietnamese forces who fought in Vietnam, including those who gave their lives; and the memory of the Vietnamese who lost their lives while attempting to flee Vietnam. Encourages all U.S. citizens to join in remembering the Fall of Saigon, honoring the contributions of the Vietnamese American community, and calling for freedom and democracy in Vietnam
fooled a small national Vietnam and second is an American modern civilized and progressive playing a trick on America's ally, which is the Republic of Vietnam-however, the rich of America gloriously has millionfold the Southern officers of prisoners of war, but the United States Congress has still deceived the Southern Officers of prisoners of war by American law again. Bills to honor us to be enriching for our second mother of American because no army of the whole world had followed with the military occupier in order to betray their nation and people like America has strongly forced the Republic of Vietnam Army Forces to surrender a barbarous enemy when our enemy did not have any international relations and international protocols with America and the Republic of Vietnam.
(102) H.Res 309 - the 44th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975, America within H. RES. 309 Recognizing the 44th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975. The ethical conscience of this express bill of the respectful lack of the law of war on the Hague Convention in 1901, since the American President and the US Senate, was approved by the American law. Even good, the US Congress has forcefully enacted the law to the Foreign Assistance Act for the Republic of Vietnam. In the meanwhile, the Government of the United States of America has been signing for a few multilateral treaties and bilateral treaty for the Republic of Vietnam in which did not only endorse the self-determination of the Southern people but also approved the sovereignty of the Republic of Vietnam by those treaties, by American law which is why a modern civilized and progressive America did not keep the solemn promises with a small country. But America has abuses for the atomic power and the powerful missiles one's self to force the Republic of Vietnam that's unconditional surrenders. In the meanwhile, the American Government has distorted all of the super values of great power and all of the super values of American honors to exchange a little core of interests in the Republic of Vietnam to get the national interests with Communism. Especially, America is a super trader when America looked at the Southern Officers who looked like the slaves of prehistoric America. Therefore, the text of this bill has contained the full enslaved smell without had little human rights of American humanism because on the playing war yard does not only have equally but also one side was lost defeated, so the lost war ought to compensate for the injured war. That is why the United States Congress has fooled us for a second time. In the meanwhile, the United States Congress has fully understood the Southern officers of prisoners of war were sacrificed our wonderful life to protect the core of interests of America by the invaded war of America which is why the richest of the

(102) Shown Here: Introduced in House (04/10/2019) This the resolution recognizes the significance of the 44th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975. The resolution honors the contributions of Vietnamese Americans and honors the service of members of the U.S. Armed Forces and the South Vietnamese forces who fought in Vietnam, including those who gave their lives.
American Government is trillion-fold of the Southern officers of prisoners of war which is why the United States Congress has still fooled us.
(103)H.R 7885 Pbl.L 88_205 - Approved December 16, 1963, so the quick orders of American President sent the American Armed Forces to the Republic of Vietnam together with the same day- In condition, Secretary Defense William Westmoreland who is an excellent hero of World War Two during he led the strong American Armed Forces and the American Alliance of the Southeast Organization Treaty to come to the Republic of Vietnam in order to occupy the Republic of Vietnam after the thirty years in the war. And then, America has begun to betray the Republic of Vietnam after America has been consumed the oldest weapons of World War Two. So America has sold off the Republic of Vietnam to communism. Because America has borrowed the law of war to shake hands with Mainland China, America, after that, has trafficker humans with communism and arrested so much slave war to come to America. As a result, the Southern officers run to follow with America on 30 April 1975, the United States Congress has enacted this bill. Let America praise them to easily listen to the American occupier when they were easily treason for their ancestors and their wonderful fatherland. Moreover, they demeaned to work so many jobs when the jobs of the Native Americans have never worked these jobs. Why do our high military ranks and pundits of the Republic of Vietnam change to work these jobs in the US? Why did the US Congress enact this to scold us but no compensated any pennies of the prisoners of war because we have listened to ear America by the lost nation? How would we explain our treason for our ancestors and our fatherland and our Vietnamese people when we were betrayed in all by the United States Congress?
(104) 28 USC § 1502 Treaty case because of the fifteen five years have gone by, our petition was from the low courts to the US Congress, but they have never resolved the prisoners of war benefits and the real property. Therefore, I would like to carry out our case to the Senate of the United States because the Government of the United States of America has been endorsed all of the multilateral, bilateral treaties, American laws, and international of relation protocols that enforced in force by the United States Congress.
