Homemaking, gardening, and self-sufficiency resources that won't radicalize you into a hate group

It seems like self-sufficiency and homemaking skills are blowing up right now. With the COVID-19 pandemic and the current economic crisis, a lot of folks, especially young people, are looking to develop skills that will help them be a little bit less dependent on our consumerist economy. And I think that's generally a good thing. I think more of us should know how to cook a meal from scratch, grow our own vegetables, and mend our own clothes. Those are good skills to have.

Unfortunately, these "self-sufficiency" skills are often used as a recruiting tactic by white supremacists, TERFs, and other hate groups. They become a way to reconnect to or relive the "good old days," a romanticized (false) past before modern society and civil rights. And for a lot of people, these skills are inseparably connected to their politics and may even be used as a tool to indoctrinate new people.

In the spirit of building safe communities, here's a complete list of the safe resources I've found for learning homemaking, gardening, and related skills. Safe for me means queer- and trans-friendly, inclusive of different races and cultures, does not contain Christian preaching, and does not contain white supremacist or TERF dog whistles.

Homemaking/Housekeeping/Caring for your home:

Making It by Kelly Coyne and Erik Knutzen [book] (The big crunchy household DIY book; includes every level of self-sufficiency from making your own toothpaste and laundry soap to setting up raised beds to butchering a chicken. Authors are explicitly left-leaning.)

Safe and Sound: A Renter-Friendly Guide to Home Repair by Mercury Stardust [book] (A guide to simple home repair tasks, written with rentals in mind; very compassionate and accessible language.)

How To Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis [book] (The book about cleaning and housework for people who get overwhelmed by cleaning and housework, based on the premise that messiness is not a moral failing; disability and neurodivergence friendly; genuinely changed how I approach cleaning tasks.)

Gardening

Rebel Gardening by Alessandro Vitale [book] (Really great introduction to urban gardening; explicitly discusses renter-friendly garden designs in small spaces; lots of DIY solutions using recycled materials; note that the author lives in England, so check if plants are invasive in your area before putting them in the ground.)

Country/Rural Living:

Woodsqueer by Gretchen Legler [book] (Memoir of a lesbian who lives and works on a rural farm in Maine with her wife; does a good job of showing what it's like to be queer in a rural space; CW for mentions of domestic violence, infidelity/cheating, and internalized homophobia)

"Debunking the Off-Grid Fantasy" by Maggie Mae Fish [video essay] (Deconstructs the off-grid lifestyle and the myth of self-reliance)

Sewing/Mending:

Annika Victoria [YouTube channel] (No longer active, but their videos are still a great resource for anyone learning to sew; check out the beginner project playlist to start. This is where I learned a lot of what I know about sewing.)

Make, Sew, and Mend by Bernadette Banner [book] (A very thorough written introduction to hand-sewing, written by a clothing historian; lots of fun garment history facts; explicitly inclusive of BIPOC, queer, and trans sewists.)

Sustainability/Land Stewardship

Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer [book] (Most of you have probably already read this one or had it recommended to you, but it really is that good; excellent example of how traditional animist beliefs -- in this case, indigenous American beliefs -- can exist in healthy symbiosis with science; more philosophy than how-to, but a great foundational resource.)

Wild Witchcraft by Rebecca Beyer [book] (This one is for my fellow witches; one of my favorite witchcraft books, and an excellent example of a place-based practice deeply rooted in the land.)

Avoiding the "Crunchy to Alt Right Pipeline"

Note: the "crunchy to alt-right pipeline" is a term used to describe how white supremacists and other far right groups use "crunchy" spaces (i.e., spaces dedicated to farming, homemaking, alternative medicine, simple living/slow living, etc.) to recruit and indoctrinate people into their movements. Knowing how this recruitment works can help you recognize it when you do encounter it and avoid being influenced by it.

Sisters in Hate by Seyward Darby (I feel like I need to give a content warning: this book contains explicit descriptions of racism, white supremacy, and Neo Nazis, and it's a very difficult read, but it really is a great, in-depth breakdown of the role women play in the alt-right; also explicitly addresses the crunchy to alt-right pipeline.)

lots of folks have made really great suggestions, but I'm surprised I didn't see any about a few common resources that are just. totally invaluable.

the library!!! i saw library books mentioned a few times, but many library systems offer free public workshops and/or Libraries of Things (as in you can borrow tools, wifi hotspots, etc -- sometimes this includes things like sewing machines!!!!)

thrift stores -- not just for old fabric but also for sewing patterns! patterns can get pretty $$$ new, and it's totally unneccessary. like many other hobbyists, it's pretty common for affluent and even working class folk to get excited about new projects and accumulate extra supplies. inevitably when folks move or someone passes on, these get tossed or donated. depending on where you live, if you're lucky there might be reuse infrastructure of some kind, and you can find fabric (scraps and by the yard) or patterns or other sewing notions secondhand for crazy cheap. check out online resources like Freecycle, too.

this is kinda in between thrift stores and sewing guilds -- fabric/clothes swaps! again, depends on where you live, but these are usually free and OVERFLOWING with resources. sometimes organizers will ask for a donation, but often sliding scale when this occurs. and I personally don't worry about coming empty handed to clothes swaps -- every swap I've organized or attended ends with the hosts having leftovers. there's truly so much material out there and you really don't need to spend money as a beginner.

SEWING GUILDS!!!!! SEWING GUILDS!!!!!!! these are basically social/skills exchange groups of folks who love their craft. there's quilting guilds, embroidery, you name it. again, this'll depend on where you live, but if you can find one and attend, guaranteed there are elderly folk who are itching to share years of experience. depending on how chill n lovely the group is (in my experience, usually v supportive environments), folks might just GIVE YOU materials. like, "here ya go!!! i have way too much and i never really liked this fabric anyway but it's good material for practicing" kind of deal.

not a resource but important if you're interested in machine sewing of any kind -- older machines are often much, much sturdier and easier to repair. I used to work in reuse and we had a wonderful volunteer who repaired sewing machines for the hell of it (she actually used to just purchase them from us, fix em up, then resell them, just cause she loved to work on them so much. Pretty much any machines that came in from the 2000s onward, (and sometimes even as old as the 80's or 90s) she'd rattle off a list of all the plastic parts in them and how quick they were to break or how difficult they were to reach if they did break, because the machines are no longer being built to last. meanwhile we would literally get 100 year old machines that needed some grease and a new belt and they'd be good to go. Of course, newer machines often have lovely bells and whistles, but for a beginner what you really wanna look for is straight stitch, reverse, zigzag, and a spool winder (this is very boring and time consuming to do by hand, but not a deal breaker imo). Those will serve you well as a beginner. Straight stitch is just fine for many fabrics, zigzag is good for materials that may be under a lot of stress and for stretchy fabrics.

your friends and family! ask if they have clothes they've been meaning to get rid of. 99 times out of 100 the answer is yes. costs $0 and you will probably get some cool fabric from your friends.

local punks/punk hangouts. see somebody with a cool back patch on their jacket? ask to do a work trade! alternatively, if there's a bar/library/3rd space frequented by lefties in your area, they might have resources they can recc to you :)

ALSO, if you've got pets or friends with pets, any project that you really despise with a passion or can't fathom how to transform into something else -- can usually be turned into stuffing for pet beds or dog/cat toys. like other folks said, mending/creating cleaning stuff is a great way to practice stitches and not need to care about the final results.

I really want to learn how to sew, but I'm very overwhelmed. I'm afraid of practicing on most things for fear of messing them up and wasting them. I'm really the kind of person who needs someone teaching me and available to answer my questions, but I don't have anyone for that and there's several reasons I'm apprehensive about finding a class (the most rational of which are my lack of income and COVID, but social anxiety is also a factor).

I know there's guides and videos online, but I always get so overwhelmed and usually don't know where to start because all my ideas are abstract, abstract to me specifically (because I don't know how fabric construction works), or difficult and/or risky enough to scare and/or confuse me out of wanting to do it.

Does anyone have tips for teaching yourself to sew? How do I practice without being wasteful?

Since I have a write up about every other AU I have in this poll, I thought I’d give the medieval AU one as well.

Albert Munson III was traitorous bastard whose only thought was making the next gold coin. Coin he never seemed to be able to hold on to. Gambling, booze, and women were only some of Albert’s vices. His younger, more level headed brother, Wayne did everything he could to try and keep as much of Edward’s inheritance as possible, but it was a losing battle.

Finally Albert spent the wrong man’s coin and ended up beheaded at the behest of the crown. The two remaining Munsons were stripped of their lands, title, what little was left of their coffers.

King Lawrence demanded that Wayne replace his court jester, but Edward stepped in and volunteered, saying that he knew how to sing, and to play the lute. King Lawrence agreed.

The point of the jester is to speak truth to power. To make the king laugh in front of his court and then think later in private. Eddie was good. He was just getting a feel for the old King when the man passes away suddenly. Edward would have suspected the young prince, Stephan, of murdering the old man. But the prince cried harder then the queen mother, Queen Penelope at the funeral.

Queen Penelope is eager to find Stephan a bride as soon as possible. Duchess Annika, called Nancy by her friends. The Marquise Robbyne of Buckley. Her first husband died while she was still young enough to be married off again. Ladies Tamera and Victoria. But the brightest gem is Princess Christine of Cunningham. Are all brought to the castle with a gift and their doweries to entice King Stephan to the alter.

Too bad his eyes tend to wander toward his jester then bevy of beauties his mother keeps parading around.

Sir Dustin is Stephan’s personal servant and guard. Hopper is chief of the guards that include Sirs Lucas, Michael, and William. Lord Jonathan was given head of his family’s fading house when his father died in the battle that Albert, Earl of Munson had sold the king’s own weapons to the opposition.

Backstory: Alexis was born to Belinda, a vampire and Nick, another vampire on the 10th of August before her brother, Jaybird and along with their younger sister Bea. Belinda was a huge role model in her life where her dad was hardly around. Their mom warned them about the werewolves. They hanged out with the Cullens whenever both of their parents were busy. When she was 8, she met Jacob and played with him but was cut short when her mom took her away from him, telling him his family was part of the werewolves. So, she never hanged with him again.  Soon enough, when a fight between the Volturi and their family broke out, the dad ran away in cowardly fear and her mother and brother died. Alex and Bea cried next to their mother and brother that night and she grew distance between her sister.

A few years later, Bea and a vampire named Jack  Austin, soon having a child with him. Alex noticed something off with Jack and tried to tell Bea but Bea wouldn't  listen. Alex gave up and looked after Hailey whenever her sister or brother-in-law were busy and grew attached to her. She soon met Jacob again when she told him off for going onto vampire territory. Bea and Alex continued going to school, hence Carlisle helping them with school fees cause he's ✨rich✨. After getting into an argument  with Bea one time, Bea got ran over   by a car and passed away and Jack left, leaving Alex with Hailey. She soon started hanging out with Jacob,  giving up with everything and they both slowly started to develop  feelings for each other. By the time they were 17, they started to secretly date, the pack and Cullens soon finding out and who   knows what happens next :)

Backstory: Annika Daisy Austin was born on the 8th of May 2005 to Bea and Jack Austin. She loved her parents and aunt dearly and they loved her back. Whenever her parents weren't around, she hanged out with her aunt, Alex. But everything took a turn for the worse when her parents died. Alex was forced to look after Annika. But everything sorta worked out for the both of them.

A few years later, she meets Seth when they are training to fight Victoria's vampire crew in Eclipse. They became friends and as time passed, she developed a small crush on him. She teased him playfully sometimes but other times, she was good friends with him. They met again when Edward and Bella got married and hung out secretly when no one was looking. They soon became a couple while Edward and Bella were on their honeymoon. And time will tell what happens next :D

Born in November 9th 2024 in Geneva, Switzerland to Max and Juliette Verstappen.

Born six days after their dad wins his fourth championship.

Grows up with a passion for football, being a PSV Eindhoven supporter like his father.

He goes into football academies as a kid, and proves to be the best of his class.

Models his football game style off of Lionel Messi and Julian Alvarez.

The Cubs Together

The cubs never feel quite complete without each other, calling themselves 'four quarters of a whole' as they grow up.

Emilian is the leader, Estelle is the brains, Casper is the energy, and Annika is the heart.

The cubs have their arguments, all siblings with such contrasting personalities and passions do, but they always make up afterwards, and are left stronger for it.

They instate a pact with each other to attend each other's sporting events whenever they're able to.

Max and Juliette raise them to support each other in everything, and to be there for emotional support.

They share everything with each other, having no secrets, following their parents' example.

As professional athletes, they always shout each other out, creating a fandom for themselves as their parents, uncles, and aunts did.

They're all deeply protective over each other, but the significant others do become family really quickly.

They grow up calling Seb, Kimi, and Fernando their 'grandpas' as Juliette lost her father in her teens, and Max doesn't let his father near them for a long time.

The cubs become an example to follow for all of the grid kids to come.

The media labels them as 'The Princes and Princesses of The Paddock'. However, they prefer 'The Cubs' - even into adulthood.

They all become heavily involved in growing their individual sports.

Max and Juliette are incredibly proud of all of them, and love them unconditionally. The family being very tight knit.

Yeah, that's about all I can think of for the Verstappen Cubs. I can already kinda feel how much personality they all have unto themselves and together. I want them to be kind of a perfect mixture of their parents in a lot of ways. I'd imagine the entire grid family would be deeply proud of the people the cubs grow into.

Weekly Book Recs: 9/22-9/29

Duke of Depravity by Scarlett Scott

A very classic historical--pair a drunken, PTSD-ridden war veteran duke with a takes-no-shit governess who's actually spying on him because he's suspected of treason? It's delicious. This is the first time I've read Scarlett Scott, and I love the heat to her books, the wit and sense of humor matched with melodramatic emotion. The air is a bit... Tessa Dare meets Elizabeth Hoyt. Which is a really good combo, I've gotta say. Will definitely read more from her soon.

The Billionaire's Fake Fiancee by Annika Martin

Annika Martin's Billionaires of Manhattan series always evokes the sense of a truly great cinematic romcom. A lot of "romcom" novels are not actually funny, and she has such an upbeat sense of humor in her writing, along with some serious sex appeal. I didn't love the third installment after super enjoying the first two, but this one was a return to form--it may be my favorite yet. You pair a hairdresser obsessed with daytime soaps and Hello Kitty on a yacht with her stern client who hates everything she represents (... or rather, he's obsessed with everything she represents) and force them into a fake relationship... You have magic. Actually, fake dating is so ubiquitous in contemporary at the moment that it often doesn't work--but here, it so does. A fabulous "grumpy hero has a love realization" moment included.

The Princess Trap by Talia Hibbert

Kind of wild that I've been bitching about being bored with fake dating lately, only to recommend two fake dating books back to back. But in my defense a) they're both really good and b) they both came out a few years ago, back before the trope was quite so exhausted. Anyway! This is great. I'm a sucker for a good royal romance, and this hits. Ruben's a very "nice guy in the streets, fuck you and leave (consensual) bruises in the sheets" type of hero, which is difficult to resist. And he's a Danish-ish prince! But where Talia Hibbert really excels is in writing great heroines, and Cherry is no exception. No nonsense yet bratty (in other words, the ideal match for Ruben) with a tough veneer that masks a very sweet, very kind heart. It's super hot--there's a moment where he tells her he likes to take control in bed, and has an "oral fetish", as if these are potential problems--but it has a soft center. Her Errant Earl by Scarlett Scott

A classic "marriage in trouble by way of his dipshittery" book, short and sweet--or not so sweet. I personally enjoy a cheating book. In this case, Will and Victoria never really had a relationship before he began cheating; he marries her to appease his father, sleeps with her once, and is off on his way for six months. But it doesn't hurt her any less, and so you have a lot of groveling, some secret keeping, and plenty of righteous anger on her part. It's not complicated, and it could stand to be a bit longer. But if you want a good long grovel with actual misdeeds to make up for? This is it.

Her Lovestruck Lord by Scarlett Scott

Another "low-down cheating dog" book, as the second installment of Scott's Wicked Husbands series (a series with a premise for me if there ever was one). In this case, however, Maggie's husband Simon never bothered to consummate the marriage before ditching her--because he was already in love with a married woman, who subsequently dumped his ass, leading him to accidentally deflower his wife at a masked sex party, during which she was planning on cucking him in revenge. Whew. And I kind of fucking loved this one. Whereas Will of Errant is a rake through and through, Simon is stern. And possessive as fuck. And so confused, because he does not love wife!!! But why is wife all he can think about??? Why wife so pretty??? This one is for the "alpha male is downed by love" crowd, with a charming heroine and a third act twist that I didn't love, but--I did love the subsequent angst. Definitely scratched an itch.
