“She has been happy here, and anxiously miserable, but she has never been free.”
Annie Bot was everything I wanted from Klara and the Sun, with a bonus hint of feminine rage.

This is the best book I've read in 2024. So far at least. Part science fiction, part allegory for abusing, manipulative, controlling relationships, part psychological study of what it means to be human, of what makes out our soul, it is addictive, creepy, unsettling, sad and surprising, all in one. If artificial intelligence is a subject that sparks your interest, you should give it a chance.
I am completely in awe.

📚January Book Review📚
4/5 Stars! ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️
“Whatever he says, whatever he does, you need to remember that you are a brilliant, amazing person. You bend over backwards to please that man, and if he doesn't appreciate you, if he doesn't realize how special you are, then you just have to do whatever you need to do to protect your heart.”
Hey guys so for my birthday month I decided to finally read this on my TBR since I loved the cover and the sci fi story that challenges toxic masculinity and empowers women to escape from abuse. As The Companian movie draws closer being released on January 31st, I decided to read a book that shares similar elements of toxic masculinity with a futuristic setting and a female companion robot named Annie as the FMC. It’s safe to say this book took me by surprise in good ways as I continued reading it. There are brilliant explorations of ownership disguised as love that pushed my levels of discomfort but also allowed me to see that self-prioritizing is important especially when you’re in an abusive relationship like Annie and Doug’s. This is shown throughout Annie’s relationship with her human owner Doug who’s shown to be misogynistic and controlling over Annie that heightens as the story continues. The domestic prison she lives in is riddled with toxic masculinity as her life is quite literally in Doug’s hands who flaunts his control over her repeatedly. Greer’s prose is compelling as her details are attentive from Annie’s point of view as she breaks out of her monotonous existence and seek the thrill of human excitement. All in all this is a book you should read if your looking for a girlfriend experience mixed with future robots.

I’m reading Annie Bot and I had no idea what the book would do because the synopsis is kind of vague but I’m 100 pages in and this is like the most captivating panic attack I’ve ever had

Books Read June 2024
Direct Sunlight by Christine Sneed
I fell in love with Sneed's writing after reading The Virginity of Famous Men earlier this year. This is another strong collection with her trademark subtle shifting glances into people's delicate lives and emotional states. Excellent work.
Cocktail by Lisa Alward
This was the final of the 2024 Danuta Gleed nominees I had to read. The funny thing is this is a lot like Sneed's work; literary fiction about relationships, but this didn't resonate. Probably found it the least engaging of the nominees but what do I know? It won the Danuta Gleed.
The Doll's Alphabet by Camilla Grudova.
Also a Danuta Gleed nominee but from a previous year. I saw this mentioned in a Twitter thread about best short story collections. Lived up to the hype. Eerie speculative fiction.
The Dance of the Demons by Esther Singer Kreitman
I heard someone mention Kreitman in the context of being Isaac Bashevis Singer's neglected and forgotten older literary sister. Was she an undiscovered amazing author buried by the patriarchy? Well, not in English she wasn't. I found the novel quite sad and a bit of a slog. An interesting read in the way it captures a way of European Jewry about to be completely obliterated but not a great read on its own. The edition I read included essays and notes on the translation which were very interesting though.
Things That Cause Inappropriate Happiness by Danila Botha
I wanted to like this so much. I found it incredibly mid. Also not the author's fault but there was an insane amount of typos in my copy, like 20+ which I've never had in a book before.
Bear by Julia Phillips
Went in and out of like with this one but I thought it stuck the landing incredibly well.
Annie Bot by Sierra Greer
Quick and heartbreaking look at a sex bot who gains sentience. I thought this was incredibly heartbreaking and wonderful.

Book of the Month Pick: Annie Bot
Annie, a robot, was designed to be the perfect girlfriend for her owner, Doug. Manufactured to meet all of his physical and emotional wants and needs, she cooks dinner every night, wears the outfits he picks out for her, and can change her libido at a moment’s notice to match his moods. She’s not the best cleaner, but she does her best not to displease him. Sometimes, that is harder than…

Artificial Autonomy
#BOOKREVIEW - Artificial Autonomy - #AnnieBot #blog
A bot designed to be the perfect companion is learning more human traits to adapt more suitably for her human owner but contradictions begin to arise as she learns that are increasingly difficult to navigate in Sierra Greer’s Annie Bot. Created to be the perfect girlfriend for her owner Doug, Annie has been learning more human traits as she cooks his favorite meals, cleans his home, wears the…

Update on my June Books
Okay! I Hugely dropped the update ball but whatever I finished Project Hail Mary and it was Fine. Good book for a dad in your life. I started the Unbroken by C.L. Clark, and I'm not loving it so far but I'm trying to stick it out to at least 50% before I consider dropping it. I think the characters just feel so young? I'm not falling into step just yet.
I finished House Of Hunger, which I wrote a much longer review of on my Goodreads earlier this month, but again have to take a second to mourn the fact that HoH was so so short and underdeveloped. I wanted so much more from that because I really liked Henderson's writing style too. I also finished a pretty good essay collection called Hood Feminism by Kendall Mikki which was a good starter for people not familiar with intersectionality. On a date with my girlfriend, she pointed out Here for the Wrong Reasons by Annabel Paulsen and Lydia Wang. Which of course I bought on the spot and read in just the last three days. It was a delightful romcom rift on The Bachelor. Moving forward I'd like to try and knock out both the Unbroken, which I'm listening to on audible, and Annie Bot by Sierra Greer, which isn't too long so it might be possible if I do 50 pages per day. I'm not moving as fast as I was in January, but I'm picking up the pace a bit again after a pretty big slump.

Friday
"Does table salt go bad" and "first amendment text" and "richmond virginia suburbs" and other things I've asked the Internet this week.
It was almost warm enough a couple days this week to make park days a thing. I tried. My toes got cold.
I think banning TikTok as it exists today is probably a good idea, but the law to effect that change seems to be in conflict with the first bullet point in the bill of rights. If we lived in a time where precedent mattered, I might be more bothered about how this all plays out. Will the government give TikTok assurances they wont enforce the law that the government enacted to oust them? Who knows. Does it matter? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ At the end of the day, I think I'm mostly just sad about my TikTok (maybe?) going away.
Booked a trip to (the suburbs of) Richmond, VA for the middle of February. A couple nights in Tuckahoe and a couple in Chester. Mostly just a vibe check. I'm hoping to settle on a plan by early March.
[work stuff.]
Rachel Platten is coming to town in March and it took me all of about 12 seconds to buy a ticket this morning, even though I haven't listened to her music in ages.
I have so many pictures to sort through and scan. And a bunch of laundry to fold.
Maybe this weekend.
It could happen.
#i knew that salt didn't ''go bad'' but i asked anyway#the salt in question was more than a couple decades old#it was fine... i think#i need to repaint my toenails#i've spent years curating my algorithm#and it's hardly any subversive propaganda at all these days#multitudes etc.#I was tempted to push the VA trip out until late March or early April but [work stuff] got me back on track#I've also got tickets to Lauren Sanderson and Lauren Mayberry in a couple weeks and Kelsea Ballerini in March and then nothing 🥺#and maisie peters bailed on opening for kelsea ballerini :((#(but she's been touring a. lot. and i'd rather see her take a break instead of burn out)#get yourself a fan like me who'll just buy a ticket to your show and then figure out what you're on about these days#I don't think I made it through the first chapter before DNFing Annie Bot#But this book was good#evenings this week with cameo appearances from Venus
