"Magpie" with Daisy Ridley Premieres at SXSW
The Magpie is a bird that has been associated with good luck and good fortune in Asian cultures. However, in this SXSW film that had its World Premiere at the Stateside Theater at SXSW on Saturday, March 9th, good luck quickly goes bad. It’s a thriller from first-time feature director Sam Yates of the U.K., starring Daisy Ridley, Shazad Latif, Matilda Lutz, and Hiba Ahmed. The bird crashing into the glass side of the house may be the origin of the title. It’s certainly representative of how the female lead, wife and mother Annette, must feel in her marriage. THE STORY The plot idea, we were told during the Q&A, came from Ridley, in collaboration with her husband, Tom Bateman. Bateman wrote the screenplay. He also received the Breakthrough Actor award at GQ's 2018 Men of the Year Awards. As an actor, he made his US feature film debut in Jonathan Levine's "Snatched" opposite Goldie Hawn and Amy Schumer. The 6’ 2” thirty-four-year-old Bateman is one of 14 children, and has a twin brother. Bateman and Ridley have been married since 2022. The first-time feature U.K. director is Sam Yates. Bateman's screenplay is the old familiar story of the long-suffering wife giving up her promising career to stay home and care for a child. In this case, Ridley’s character (Annette) has a young daughter (Mathilda) and an infant son (Lucas). The baby is cranky. Dad does as little as possible to help care for the child. BEN & MATHILDA Dad Ben may not pay much attention to his wife, but he seems to dote on his daughter (Hiba Ahmed). When Mathilda gets a role in a movie as the daughter of rising female star Alicia (Mathilda Lutz), Dad immediately begins taking her to the set daily. He hangs around the set, further ignoring his long-suffering wife stuck at home with a crying baby. Soon, Ben becomes romantically interested in the leading lady. If you expect some racy sex scenes, however, think again. The romance is more illusion than reality. The father figure in “Magpie” is fairly representative of many men of the Baby Boomer generation. Nowadays, with the majority of women working wives, Mom expects and deserves a spouse who participates in tasks like getting up in the night to take care of the crying baby or helping change diapers. Can we say that Ben is the Donald Trump of Dads? Or should I quote Shazad Latif, who referred to his character as “a piece-of-shit.” The audience burst into spontaneous applause after the scene where Ben gets his come-uppance. THE GOOD Daisy Ridley is riveting as the wife who is putting up with Ben’s wandering eye, while keeping her own eyes firmly on the situation. She is right on the edge, stressed to the max, and we’re right there with her. She sports a severe short haircut---a nice touch. There is a great scene where Ben runs off and leaves Annette with their infant son on a day when she has a luncheon date with an old work colleague. Annette has to take the child along in an infant carrier. The lunch, as you can imagine if you’ve ever had a colicky baby (as I have), is a disaster. The incident makes us even more sympathetic to poor Annette. Shazad Latif as Ben is appropriately belligerent, self-centered, and narcissistic. His actions seemed quite representative of many men in my days as a young mother. Today’s fathers are more involved. We might compare Ben to Donald Trump, who has publicly said that he left all the hands-on parenting of young children to his wives. THE BAD The actions of Annette, however, seemed much too docile and passive. She passively puts up with Ben’s indifference. While we see her stressed to the max in private, she keeps a stiff upper lip during every confrontation. Maybe she should speak up, instead of acting out? Perhaps she could have put a halt to Ben’s wandering eye sooner, rather than later? Annette did get in a good dig about Ben’s supposed career as a successful writer, implying that nobody knew who he was. (Indeed, I wondered when or if Ben ever worked.) The audience loved that line, too. The young actress who played Tilly (Hiba Ahmed) came off as very plastic. Some child actors are instantly believable. Young Hiba was not. The three lead adults were great, but the film would have benefited from a stronger child star. THE HOUSE From the stage, during the Q&A at the Stateside Theater in Austin, the filmmakers described how the film began falling into place once they found the right house. It had to be a glass box that seemed as though the wife was nearly imprisoned there. They found the right house; it worked. The cast, during the Q&A, described a fun shoot, saying, “Everyone was so brilliant and happy. Everyone raised each other to tell the story." CONCLUSION: This is the kind of movie that will show up on a streaming service and enthrall audiences. It may not be the most in-depth portrait of marital strife, but it’s a situation to which many hassled wives and mothers will relate. Pencil it in for your evening enjoyment when it shows up on television. You won't be disappointed. Read the full article

Mushy Peas 2.0: The Mushening
Finally achieved success—or at least, peas that mushed—in my second attempt at the classic British side dish.
This isn't my first time working with dried marrowfat peas; I have been buying them occasionally to make pea soup like the early 19th century Royal Navy. I finally attempted mushy peas after the recipe by Annette Yates in her cookbook English Traditional Recipes: A Heritage of Food and Cooking. My downfall was not using the soaking tablet because the recipe didn't mention it, and I didn't think it would be ~traditional~ to soak the peas with the provided tablets of sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, and sodium acid pyrophosphate.
Well. Not even extra extra extra simmering got those peas to mush, and despite the overnight soak they remained tough. This time I used the tablet and simmered the peas longer. Yates' recipe calls for carrot and onion to be added to the water with the peas, then discarded after cooking. I didn't feel like ruining another sacrificial onion so I added a clove of garlic (hey, it's an allium!) which probably un-Britished it. (Ghosts of my Italian ancestors cheering in the background while my English ancestors wail).
Other recipes online, such as this one, dispense with the added sacrificial vegetables so I don't know what is Annette Yates' deal (also, they add some baking soda to mush-ify the peas, which would have been good to know!) At this point I am starting to think of her as a wee bit unreliable, not least because her English Traditional Recipes has a recipe for "Brown Windsor Soup," which is apparently a joke from a 1950s radio show??

Cooking with the Captain: Whitebait Dinner
My latest cooking project has been rewarding, not only as the recreation of a meal mentioned in Captain Marryat's novels, but a meal that Frederick Marryat himself enjoyed on at least one documented celebration: presiding over the whitebait dinner welcoming Charles Dickens home on his return from his American tour of 1842.[1]
Whitebait dinner, prepared from tiny whole fish lightly breaded and fried, was once a staple of London life. “They used to be caught in large numbers every summer in the Thames estuary,” writes Annette Yates in her cookbook, English Traditional Recipes, “and an annual whitebait dinner held at Greenwich and attended by government ministers marked the end of each parliamentary session for most of the 19th century.”[2]
A whitebait dinner at Greenwich drawn in 1860 by John Leech, an English caricaturist who also illustrated Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol (Wikimedia Commons)
Marryat, in his 1840 novel Poor Jack, traced the popularity of whitebait dinners to the early 19th century:
...before steam-boats made Greenwich so come-at-able, there were many families of distinction who resided there and in its environs especially in the autumn of the year, when the river offered such amusement. It was just at that period that the white-bait parties became so much in vogue, and Greenwich was considered a pleasant retreat for a few months by many of the fashionable world.
The title character, who is a poor mudlarker in his early life, mentions that the well-heeled patrons of these parties were a source of income as they waited for their dinner in river-side taverns:
There were other ways by which money was to be obtained during the summer season; which were from the company who used to come down to the white bait parties at the Ship and other taverns. There were many other boys who frequented the beach, besides me; and we used to stand under the windows, and attract attention by every means in our power, so as to induce the company to throw us halfpence to scramble for. This they would do to while away their time until their dinner was ready, or to amuse themselves and the ladies by seeing us roll and tumble one over the other.
— Frederick Marryat, Poor Jack
(Yes, Marryat spells it as both white-bait and white bait in the same book—this is another reason why book critics roasted him).
For a recipe, I turned to Annette Yates' English Traditional Recipes, quoted above, which is a beautiful, well-illustrated book filled with cultural notes and careful instructions. Her 'Deviled Whitebait' calls for cayenne pepper, which I imagined would improve the taste of the frozen imported whitebait that I used as a raw material.
You know you married the right woman when you open up a box of frozen tiny fish and she calls them cute. (I think my wife also enjoyed the finished product even more than I did!)
Allowing my whitebait to thaw overnight in the refrigerator, I rinsed them and followed Yates' simple recipe: dipping the fish in milk, coating them in flour seasoned with black pepper, salt, and cayenne pepper, and deep-frying them in small batches. They are to be served very hot, and dusted with additional cayenne pepper.
I was leery of all the hot pepper—and the irony of this deadly heat coming from a book called English Traditional Recipes—but it was sound advice. I'm usually not a fan of lemon juice on seafood, but it was very good on the whitebait. Tartar sauce was also very good, but once the whitebait cooled down they were less appetizing. According to Yates, fried whitebait “were once so plentiful that they were sold from barrows in the streets.”
Another John Leech drawing, this one from 1853 (source). Did the dinner at Greenwich in honour of Charles Dickens and attended by Captain Marryat resemble this gathering? The poet and author Thomas Hood wrote that he declined a leading role, and “Captain Marryat presided instead. On his right Dickens, and Monckton Milnes, the poetical M.P., on his left, Sir John Wilson,” and he lists a number of other writers, artists, politicians, and minor celebrities of his day in attendance.[3]

The phone was in my jacket pocket so I couldn’t see anything and I was scared of getting caught, so a lot is very zoomed and I’m really sorry about that. I absolutely loved the set, it was reimagined into a more modern almost gangster like setting. Shot in 4k on my phone. Please gift out to anyone who asks. Duncan having an intense argument with a liberal girl in the white house's office. Y/N hates Duncan because he's a republican and Duncan doesn't even know why he hates Y/N (liberal, I guess?) But they discover that both have a lot in common that they think. Not only in terms of politics.
I’m not really good in politics, so all I know about it comes from Wikipedia...
"What the fuck are you doing it Shepherd ?!"
It was always nice to be greeted by the President's favorite doggie, who had almost completely ruined his life by revealing to him that he had been adopted before having him arrested for high treason, almost putting him in prison forever, and who now wanted to speak to him to supposedly burying the hatchet. Duncan had hesitated before accepting the invitation to the White House, after the last time, and knowing that Annette and Bill would not be delighted, but he had thought about it, seeing an opportunity to save his reputation, because if Claire Underwood agreed to see him despite all the charges, so maybe the public would think it was just a huge mistake. While waiting for the president to finish an important meeting, he had hoped not to cross paths with (Y / N), one of her assistants, a loyal little soldier who had always followed her. Claire could laugh at the relationship Frank and Doug had all she wanted, but theirs wasn't much better. As soon as she saw him in the hallway, (Y / N) almost jumped on him, barking. It was a little surprising that the president did not tell her that he had to come, or else she wanted him to be yelled at a little before receiving him.
"I was invited." he sighed as he tried to walk away.
"Invited ? You ? Who is the fool who may want to see you after all that you and your family had done ?"
"This fool is your dear boss and our beloved president. If your planning is not up to date, it's not my fault."
(Y / N) seemed outraged, as if she refrained from hitting him, but she was also embarrassed to have insulted the president without doing it on purpose, so she simply made a face of disgust, before standing in front of the door of the oval office, as if she didn't believe him and preferred to be certain that he had no bad intentions.
"After the incident with Mr. Yates, I find that normal." she growled.
"Ah yes. Attempted murder, then suicide, right ? You really believe in it or you just don't want to see that she probably killed him ?"
" Shut up Shepherd. We can also talk about your wonderful app if you want. How much did your mother have to pay for the judges to agree to let you out with nothing ? You Republicans are really... You love judges only when it suits you, huh ? The president must go to the Supreme Court for totally invented crimes, but if it is you, the judges should not have the right to legislate. Unless, of course, they can to be bought, so it doesn't matter. You can sleep knowing that you are a traitor to the country that you claim to love and defend Shepherd ? And all that for your family ? Capitalist assholes who think only of money and who will throw you under a bus if you're not up to it ?"
"Fuck you."
This charming discussion could have continued, turning into a fight, if Claire Underwood had not left her office at that time, smiling, placing her hand on (Y/N)'s shoulder to calm her down, telling her that everything was fine, before inviting Duncan to follow her. He couldn't help but wink at the little dog before closing the door, amused when he saw her expression. The rest was less amusing, when he discovered that it was not Annette, as he thought, who had paid his bail, but Claire. The pragmatic Bill Shepherd had forbidden his sister to intervene during this affair, to not attract more bad publicity to them, without forgetting that he was not one of them, so it was not really important. Claire handed him a handkerchief when she saw his eyes fill with tears.
"I couldn't let you go to jail. Now that I'm a mother, now that I have a family, I see things differently. I'm sorry I used you to reach Annette, even if you can't say that she didn't do the same. Your application could have been perfect, if they hadn't hijacked it for illegal purposes. You would have had a good career and it would be difficult after what happened to take over the business. I feel responsible, I want to help you."
"I think you've done enough." he breathed, struggling not to cry. "Why tell me all this ? Why don't you let me believe that my mo... Annette and Bill still wanted me ?"
"So they don't manipulate you again. I'm giving you your freedom a second time. Don't let it go, Duncan."
It was really nice to say that to a man : you are free. You are alone, you have lost everything, you are hated by almost the whole country, you have no family, but you are free, so smile. At least Claire did not offend him by offering him to work for her or speak with Annette, she simply wished him luck, shaking his hand before taking him outside. Despite his tremors, he managed to grab a cigarette and his lighter, needing to smoke so as not to crack, but between his fingers which refused to remain calm and his vision which was disturbed because of the tears, impossible to light it. Someone came to help him, quickly taking his lighter. (Y / N). Great. He really didn't need that now.
"Are you... you crying ?" she wondered. "Are you going to complain about the mean president to your dear mommy ?"
"Don't talk about what you don't know !"
"Wow ! Calm down, Shepherd."
"I am not a Shepherd !" he shouted, turning to her, unable to control himself because of all the fury and despair he had accumulated for weeks, wanting to save appearances. "I have no family, I have nothing, no one will want to work with me or even be seen with me ! My life is over ! But go ahead, make fun of me ! Tell me that's what I deserve, that I'm just a capitalist asshole, crying because he has no money left ! I didn't care about money, I wanted to make a revolutionary application, I wanted to change things, I wanted the Americans to be able to express themselves as they wanted and to be informed on all subjects, and Bill ruined everything ! All their political bullshit ruined everything ! I'm not playing politics, shit, I'm a business man ! Well... I was a business man."
Contrary to what he thought, (Y / N) didn't make fun of him, but neither did she seem to have pity on him, frowning before sighing and hitting him softly in the back of the head.
"Hey !"
"Shut up Shep... Duncan. Life is hard, sometimes we get in big trouble, but stop whining and fight back ! Are you smart ? You're going to find a job quickly, even with this 'scandal'. Some idiots might even want to have you because of that. You have no more money ? You will earn more, unless all the capitalists in the world forget how capitalism works, that is, by circulating money, and not keeping it in a bank. Was your application good ? Do another one, but this time one that respects the privacy of the users and that no motherfucker can use for personal gain. You have been found innocent. even if the judge was bought ? So you're innocent and people quickly forget about this story."
"Even you who yell at me when you see me, talking about it over and over ?"
"You had insulted the president, I just reacted !"
"Okay. She asked the judge to release me, are you going to criticize her or remind me that I was adopted to divert the conversation ?"
"What ? She... But..." stammered (Y / N), visibly surprised by this news, before taking his cigarette to smoke it.
They stood there for a moment without saying anything, in the cold, looking at the gray sky thinking of everything they believed, all their hopes and dreams that were never going to come true, all the things that kept them apart and brought them together.
"My father was a Republican." said (Y / N) looking down. "A real asshole. Very rich, very racist, very sexist, loving no one but himself... But you don't see that when you are a child, he was my hero, I believed everything he said, I thought the media was lying to us all the time, that we were the best, that we deserved to be happy because we were born in the right place, at the right time. I was happy to receive lots of money without doing anything. Then my mother left him, I walked away from him and it was after that that my eyes opened. Wait. I'm not saying that everything the Republicans say is false, some ideas are interesting, but in fact, I find that they are unfair and selfish people who use others to succeed. Like your Bill, who thought only of him, regardless of what could happen to you. You're much better off without him, believe me."
Gently, she gave him back his cigarette before putting her hand on his arm, tapping it timidly, biting her lips, visibly uncomfortable. Now that he thought about it, Duncan had not stopped looking at his navel, without seeing that even if his situation was horrible, there were thousands of people who lived worse, every day, and who nevertheless came to be happy and do what they wanted. No doubt (Y / N) was not wrong, he had always been a temperamental, protected, selfish little boy with an easy life. With his studies, his experience, and even his name, since no one knew he was not really a Shepherd, he had no reason to be so desperate. He had never been close to Bill, and not really to Annette. He was young, he had time.
"Thank you..." he muttered.
"Hmm. You're welcome. Are you... racist or sexist ?"
"What ? No !"
"Okay. So maybe you're not that bad. A boy who cries in public without being ashamed can't be that bad."
"I'm not crying. And I thought I was alone."
(Y / N) laughed, opening her mouth to speak when a bodyguard approached, to tell her that the president wanted to see her. Quickly, she took a card from her pocket, with her number on it.
"Call me... if you're alone again, not crying. Or just to talk."
Playing with the card between his fingers, Duncan smiled at her before following the bodyguard to leave the White House, returning to his empty apartment, but feeling much lighter.

The Great Barrier Reef is Not Doing Too Great
The Great Barrier Reef, located off of the north-eastern coast of Australia, is the world’s largest reef and is composed of 3,000 individual reef systems and coral cays. It is one of the seven wonders of the world and is larger than the Great Wall of China. It is the only living thing on the planet that is visible from space. In 2016, the Great Barrier Reef has been affected by climate change and has experienced coral bleaching, which occurs when unnaturally hot ocean water destroys the colorful algae that surrounds a reef which, in turn, starves the coral. This extensive process is not always fatal for the coral but a study last year found that the largest die-off of corals ever recorded was in 2016 with about 67% of the shallow water coral dead. Global warming has the most detrimental impact on reef decay but another factor that does not help the reefs thrive is tourism. Millions of tourists from all over the world go to see the beautiful reefs that are found on the ocean floors, however, many are uneducated in how to properly treat a reef. Many people often step on the reefs or break off corals and plants, which in turn kills and harms the reef in many ways. Common sense coral reef education should be voiced as many people believe their actions against the reef are harmless, when in actuality, they are killing this ecosystem slowly.
Coral reefs play such an important part in our world as they not are not only home to thousands of species, but those species hold the key to new medicines. Many different drugs and medicine have recently been developed from coral reef species such as the animals and plants that inhabit the reefs. Cures for cancer, arthritis, infections, and other diseases become more obtainable by discovering the new species that are within the reefs. Scientists have estimated that that there is around 1 to 8 million species still waiting to be discovered in the ocean and around coral reefs. This shows that coral reefs are not just known for their beauty and being big tourist attractions around the world but they are important for the future generations of our planet. Many experts say that once the reef has died there is no chance of saving it, however, there may be one last hope. At the rate the reefs are dying and climate change is accelerating, the only sure way to preserve the world’s coral reefs will be to take drastic action immediately to reverse global warming.

2021 is going to be a year of savoury pastries for me, I can feel it. This is one of my Mutton Pies from weekend cooking: adorable delicious muffin-sized little pie, and inside is MEAT.
My Traditional English Recipes cookbook has an entire section for Savoury Pastry and oh my gosh—finally I can understand how the British ruled the world. It was meat pies all along.

Kameron: You and Joseph have done a wonderful job with this old house! It looks amazing!
Annette: Thanks, Mr. Yates. I still can’t believe we got it for so cheap. And I have you to thank for teaching your son how to be so handy!
Kameron: (chuckles) I am just happy those skills are actually being used.
Belle: (from inside) Where would I find the ice?
Annette: I’ll show you! (takes Belle down to the bar and makes her a drink) So... Are we, uhm, ok, Mrs. Yates?
Belle: (smiles tightly) I’d prefer if you both had waited and gotten married before shacking up together but I do like you. I just need some time to adjust to this. (her smile turns into a grin) But I do love what you’ve done with the house!

Season 6 Episode 1 SPOILERS: The Reign of Claire Underwood
With a sneak peek into the first episode of the upcoming season, how is the sudden disappearance of Kevin Spacey’s character explained? Claire kills Frank Underwood. How she did it? We have yet to find out. With Frank’s waning health in the previous season, I can imagine most of the suspicions were put to rest.
The First Hundred Days
To the public, her first months in office were that of mourning. Burying the previous president as well as her husband is a good excuse to stay cooped up in the White House. Being the first female president also comes with additional adversity. A slew of social media death threats has the FBI and Secret Service taking extra precautions as Claire is about to send off the first tour into Syria. With opposition to her presidency and the previous season’s declaration of war on ICO, an assassination attempt remains expected.
The Fourth of July
Against the warnings of her staff, Claire finds herself celebrating the birthday of America with its servicemen. After thunderous applause, she begins working the line of soldiers heading to their first tour of duty. To her surprise, it’s a female soldier that questions the president’s motives. As much as Claire claims it’s the woman’s turn, sending America’s youth to war without a plan of pulling out doesn’t sit well with many.
A bullet pierces Claire’s rear-window during the return trip. Situated in a more secure location, thoughts of passed presidential assassination attempts run through her mind. Without any bodily harm, Claire perversely sees this as the first real sign of respect she has received in her first hundred days.
Old Ties and New Enemies
Old ties made by Francis come to haunt Claire in the form of new characters from the elite class. It’s a group that Frank tried to collaborate with while still trying to become president-elect. His goals changed suddenly as season five came to an end. Frank exclaims in the last episode that real power comes from those who own the White House, not the ones that live in it.
In this latest season, the elite comes in the form of the Sheperds (played by Greg Kinnear and Dianne Lane). Another power couple, much like Francis and Claire, Bill and Annette Sheperd seek the cooperation of the presidency. Claire, wanting to separate all ties from Frank’s past, shows opposition. With broken promises, the upper echelon of the wealthy stand against Claire and her presidency.
We also have a short scene with a new and tenacious journalist, Melody Cruz (Athena Karkanis). Threatened by previous politicians that she’d end up in a river only adds fuel to Cruz’s fire. As a character similar to Hammerschmidt and Zoe Barnes, I expect Cruz to be a formidable threat when it comes to the media.
What to Expect from this Final Season of HOUSE OF CARDS
Hammerschmidt could investigate Claire’s involvement with Frank and Doug’s crimes. But even then, it’s hard to say whether he has much motivation anymore. Both characters are essentially out of the picture. Melody Cruz will probably take up the Zoe/Hammerschmidt torch in that aspect.
Frank’s passing leaves an ominous presence, but Claire makes it clear his death was necessary. In one scene we find Claire with a trapped bird in Frank’s old bedroom. As she captures the poor creature, it feels almost sadistic; the audience wondering if she will kill it or not.
Doug still stands as a threat with all the Underwood knowledge weighing on his shoulders, but he seems determined to protect Frank’s name. He is currently in a psychiatric ward for the top percentile, still unpardoned, and with added disdain for Claire. I’m just not sure how much more his character can be involved. Yet, he manages to be the barrel of gunpowder ready to explode and reveal all of the Underwoods’ transgressions. Of course, I would love to see some redemption for him.
Claire’s Adversity
The new elite and the ongoing war in Syria are currently the only active conflicts for Claire. We have a general idea of the Sheperd’s influence, seemingly surpassing that of the White House, so anything is possible. The war in Syria will more than likely involve Russia’s Viktor Petrov, so expect odder sexual tension between him and Claire.
I’m excited to see Frank’s better half as president. How is she going to compete with the devious Francis Underwood? She’s already killed her former lover, Tom Yates, meaning first-degree murder isn’t an issue for her now. And she has connections to all of Frank’s crimes. How far will Claire go to solidify her position as Leader of the Free World?
What’s unfortunate is that this season of HOUSE OF CARDS will be its last, and a shorter one at that with only eight episodes. Without an exact release date mentioned, we can hope to expect the premiere near the end of this year. Here’s to hoping Doug receives his redemption!
