Princess Anneliese is intelligent, brave, and kind, and when duty calls her to marry a complete stranger in order to save her kingdom from bankruptcy, she reluctantly agrees.

Julian is Anneliese’s tutor who has secretly been in love with her for many years, having no idea that she feels the same way and deciding to step aside in order to let Anneliese fulfill her duty.

Anneliese, however, disappears without a trace a week before her wedding, and Julian, suspecting foul play, arranges for Anneliese’s identical twin, a peasant girl named Erika, to take the princess’ place until he can solve the mystery. Anneliese escapes her captors but is not believed by the palace guards when she tries to return, and Julian is kidnapped as well after delving too deep into the plot to steal Anneliese’s kingdom. The two will have to work together to escape a deadly mine collapse and save Anneliese’s mother from making a terrible mistake, but first they will have to admit the feelings they have suppressed for so long.

I don’t think Anneliese told anyone she thought about running away, not even Julian. she seems to keep her thoughts mostly hidden, which makes sense, considering one of the princess rules is “never show a thing you feel inside.” (altho I do believe that’s a little bit open to interpretation, honestly.) and before the mine scene, there’s a lot that’s unsaid between her and Julian, so I don’t think she would have confided in him before. they were close, but not that close. (see: the balcony scene where she says “sometimes I wish...” and then says never mind.)

but regardless of all that, I love that Julian knows that her running away is out-of-character. he says outright that it does not add up, and he’s right. he knows that Anneliese puts her duty and responsibilities before anything else. he knows that she wouldn’t do this. thinking about something and acting on it are two very different things, so he wouldn’t necessarily know if she thought about it, but he knows that she would not do it. it’s a beautiful illustration of how well he knows her.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate Julian, aka the best love interest to ever exist in a Barbie movie. His character was actually important and developed, playing an important role in the story. It was made very clear that he and Anneliese were best friends. Their relationship developed naturally over the years, and wasn’t suddenly added in at some point in the movie.

He truest love Anneliese, not because she was a princess, but because she was Anneliese, his best friend. He knew that he’d never have a chance to be with her, and had resigned himself to that fate and throughout the entire movie thought she harbored no feelings towards him. He just cared so much about her regardless of whether or not they’d end up together. This man went and committed treason because he knew her well enough to know when something wasn’t right. He ended up helping save her kingdom from bankruptcy and prevented Preminger from stealing the throne without expecting anything in return.

Not to mention the fact that he interacted with Erika, a girl who looked identical to the one he loved, without any sign of romantic interest whatsoever. This man didn’t love Anneliese because she was pretty or royalty, he loved her because of who she was.

Anyways yeah stan Julian. The best love interest in any barbie movie. He’s that best.
