Hellooo time for part 2 of this post! (This will be in three parts, I'll edit the posts for easier access).

Unfortunately (for them), one evening Bob and Claryce fall on the Simpsons family- Bart and Lisa don't hesitate to warn their school librarian about Bob's dangerous nature.

This greatly surprises Claryce- who complains that she knows Robert since they were kids- and that no one had the right to tell her what she should think of her childhood friend! (And anyway, why are they calling him "Sideshow Bob?") Bob takes advantage of the situation to cut the talk short and leave somewhere where they'll be just the two of them- just to reassure her and to please ignore those idiots. While still confused, Claryce relaxes... And they settle for a meeting in a few days - a moment Bob swears that she'll never forget. ♥

...But the seeds of doubt were already planted. And as soon as she's back home, curiosity gets the best of her...

And she types "Sideshow Bob" in her search browser.

She barely sleeps the following night - or when she does, she has nightmares of her favorite fictional villain turning into a murderous Bob - and spends the next day seeking for answers. Just anything to clear her doubts. This is surely some kind of bad joke - or some exaggerated facts - you know how the media is!

But the more she asks, the more anxious she gets. Nothing seems to reassure her, and worst, she keeps hearing the scariest rumors about her partner... And everyone assumed she was aware of it all!

So eventually, the tension builds, the paranoia grows, and she snaps.

Thankfully, when she's down, she can always count on her family... Or the one member who's still in Springfield.

There's something ironic about telling the leader of the Mob you're worried of dating a criminal mastermind.

Oh well. Mob leader or not, he's still the best uncle you can have for life advice... Well, sometimes. For Claryce, at least.

This at least helps her to relax once more... And consider that, yes, perhaps this could work! And who knows? Maybe she could "fix him", as her friend Ann (@fauchart's OC - who makes a little cameo in this post ♥) told her about Snake!

Yes. Perhaps things could be nice, for a change. She'll go to that date. And enjoy it while it lasts. Can't be that bad, after all that summer spent together, right?

no because now i am quite literally thinking about how due to the nature of me writing goud after i wrote wings of love (in it, in which, merel gets her happy ending), i unknowingly trapped merel rooijakkers in her fate in a way no other character got. it is WRITTEN by me, exactly where merel is a year after goud and she is still understandably traumatised from that night. it is a huge part of her backstory. with no other character in goud is it that known where they would be a year later, except maybe liesbeth and she hardly counts because she was hardly in wings of love. with anne-fleur, all that was known about her was that she was in love with merel and then cheated on her. i got full control of what i could do with her because i hadn't written her story yet. her fate was unknown. i didnt know what happened to her before the events of the play, and i didnt know what happened after. i could write her story however i feel.

but merel? as much as it hurt me, no matter what i wrote, it had to end with her crying on a canal. she was tied to her fate because i had already written it for her.

While we’re on the subject of names, is there an explanation for how traditional nicknames came about that are seemingly unrelated to, or have little in common with, the original name?

ie- John/Jack, Richard/Dick, Henry/Harry/Hank, Charles/Chuck, Margaret/Peggy/Daisy, Sarah/Sally, Mary/Molly, Anne/Nan, etc

I am actually over a week into researching a huge follow-up post (probably more than one if I’m being honest) about the history of nickname usage, so I will be going into this in much, much more detail at a hopefully not-so-later date - if I have not lost my mind. (Two days ago I spent three hours chasing down a source lead that turned out to be a typographical error from 1727 that was then quoted in source after source for the next 150 years.)

As a preview though, here’s some info about the names you mentioned:

The origins of a good portion of common English nicknames come down to the simple fact that people really, really like rhyming things. Will 🠞Bill, Rob🠞Bob, Rick🠞Dick, Meg🠞Peg.

It may seem like a weird reason, but how many of you have known an Anna/Hannah-Banana? I exclusively refer to my Mom’s cat as Toes even though her name is Moe (Moesie-Toesies 🠞 Toesies 🠞 Toes).

Jack likely evolved from the use of the Middle English diminutive suffix “-chen” - pronounced (and often spelled) “-kyn” or “kin”. The use of -chen as a diminutive suffix still endures in modern German - as in “liebchen” = sweetheart (lieb “love” + -chen).

John (Jan) 🠞 Jankin 🠞 Jackin 🠞 Jack.

Hank was also originally a nickname for John from the same source. I and J were not distinct letters in English until the 17th Century. “Iankin” would have been nearly indistinguishable in pronunciation from “Hankin” due to H-dropping. It’s believed to have switched over to being a nickname for Henry in early Colonial America due to the English being exposed to the Dutch nickname for Henrik - “Henk”.

Harry is thought to be a remnant of how Henry was pronounced up until the early modern era. The name was introduced to England during the Norman conquest as the French Henri (On-REE). The already muted nasal n was dropped in the English pronunciation. With a lack of standardized spelling, the two names were used interchangeably in records throughout the middle ages. So all the early English King Henrys would have written their name Henry and pronounced it Harry.

Sally and Molly likely developed simply because little kids can’t say R’s or L’s. Mary 🠞 Mawy 🠞 Molly. Sary 🠞 Sawy 🠞 Sally.

Daisy became a nickname for Margaret because in French garden daisies are called marguerites.

Nan for Anne is an example of a very cool linguistic process called rebracketing, where two words that are often said/written together transfer letters/morphemes over time. The English use of “an” instead of “a” before words beginning with vowels is a common cause of rebracketing. For example: the Middle English “an eute” became “a newt”, and “a napron” became “an apron”. In the case of nicknames the use of the archaic possessive “mine” is often the culprit. “Mine Anne” over time became “My Nan” as “mine” fell out of use. Ned and Nell have the same origin.

Oddly enough the word “nickname” is itself a result of rebracketing, from the Middle English “an eke (meaning additional) name”.

I realized earlier this week that my cat (Toe’s sister) also has a rebracketing nickname. Her name is Mina, but I call her Nom Nom - formed by me being very annoying and saying her name a bunch of time in a row - miNAMiNAMiNAM.

Chuck is a very modern (20th century) nickname which I’ll have to get back to you on as I started my research in the 16th century and am only up to the 1810s so far lol.

Hi! Now that I've posted my character reference I can share this drawing I've made for @fauchart featuring her own Simpsons OC, Ann-Doreen Dale! I figured out that I feel the need to tell the story behind my oc so I can present it to people clearly!

Ann is basically me but also not me, like many people's mychara. She's basically me in an ideal PriPara Universe™️. So yeah basically the oc.

Ann is a lovely type idol whose preferred brand is Fantasy Time. She's adult year old and her character phrase is "um-um!" (used when she agrees deeply with others or with what she says; because I'm really shy, I actually “umum” instead of saying “yes” irl and I got people telling me it's a peculiar way to express agreement, so I thought it was quite funny as a character phrase). Born June 3rd. Her motifs are angels, bunnies and stars. Her favorite food is the fluffy and round angel food cake. Her image color is marshmallow blue (sub is white). The coord she usually wears in Pripara is the Kirakira Yumeme Coord.

Inside Idol Land Ann has the appellation of "Angelic Idol": she's gentle, soft spoken, slow, a bit childish in the most moe way possible (e.g. Kirara Hanazono). It seems like she has her head somewhere alse all the time, so much so that sometimes she forgets about Promises she signed up for and you'll find her in the Idol Land forest wandering around. Unfortunately her bunny manager is a literal ばぶ baby, so that also doesn't help her that much. Her idol goal is to spread kindness and to reach the hearts of those who are in need, especially children. She's easy to approach, a great care giver and will partake to any plan, even the most risky one (and she'll come back mysteriously all safe and sound…).

Outside Pripara Ann

As mentioned Ann is an adult. She aspires to become a children book writer and illustrator. Despite sharing the same naiveness of her IL persona, real world Ann is quiet, reserved and speak very few words to people. Because of this she thinks her attitude might scary strangers away, so she uses her Pripara counterpart to archive her goal to take care of others. She also wears big round white glasses but I don't like how I draw them so you have to take her glass-less! lol She shares her apartment with a pet chicken named Piyo-kun who will log in Idol Land to cheer on her lives (system desu!). She started Pripara during her first years of high school, were involved in the great memory cancellation thing, but gained her memory back when she found an old self-produced picture book about Pripara.
