AWAE Spoilers - S3E6 review (mostly rants about Gilbert)
I’m not disappointed, nor sad. I’m MAD! The Shirbert clownery that was served is infuriating. I feel bad for putting so much emotion on that dance scene, and I felt Anne’s distress.
Tumblr media
Seeing Gilbert with Winnie at the fair was something I anticipated (the Ka’kwet theory was quite unlikely given the historical context), but the way Gilbert handled the entire situation was shameful!
Ladies and Gentlemen! The magnificent Idiotic Gilbert Blythe!
Tumblr media
I am not mad at Gilbert’s relation with Winnie. And I’m not mad at him not reciprocating Anne’s feelings. I’m mad because he didn’t acknowledge ANY of the feelings or relation!
With Anne. HE KNOWS he has feelings for her! We ALL saw that! He even ranted about it to Bash while he was cutting carrots! He also knows (or at least guesses) that Anne had shared the same feelings with him. And he is also free to pursue her or to go for Winnie. But why does he have to behave like an idiot!? How could he think that bringing Winnie to the fair where they’ll definitely meet Anne was a good idea?!! HELLO??? Blythe, Have you already forgotten Anne or do you not care anymore?
Tumblr media
He didn’t feel embarrassed when he and Winnie bumped at Anne, on the contrary he looked proud and relax. He introduced Anne as a “classmate”. He didn’t even get a clue on why Anne wishes him and Winnie every happiness. Not a single good old heart eyes! He was as interesting as a dead oyster. I’m as mad as Anne, and frankly he deserves another “Anne’s Special” (this is how I call the slate breaking incident) to bring him back to his senses. But good for Anne, she could channel her anger to do justice to Josie. At least, all this frustration with Gilbert didn’t blind her to see through the little details and recognize that her friend was devastated. And the fact that she’s using the printing press for something else that it is intended to, shows that sometimes, you have to break the rules in order to bring change. I was so proud of Anne at the end of this episode!
With Winnie. We get it Blythe! Winnie is “easier to be with”. You invited her AND her parents. It’s a big deal so you want to look pretty. You score points with her dad. He even offers to help you reach your dream of studying at La Sorbonne. And yet Blythe, when you had to introduce Winnie to the Avonlea crew, you could’t even acknowledge what she was! Even though you were not expecting to marry her yet, you couldn’t acknowledge her as your girlfriend, not even “good friend”! Nothing came out of your mouth! You are pathetic, Blythe!
Doesn’t he know that inviting your girlfriend’s parents is a big deal? Or is he using her to reach his goals? Either way, we know it’s not gonna end well. And Gilbert will be denied his dream to go to La Sorbonne when he breaks up with Winnie. I hope he’ll have the decency to initiate the break up instead of being the passive fool who gets dump. Please Gilbert, show us that you can still use your brain!
I ended up liking Winnie more than Gilbert in this episode (Yup, I said it! And I’m not ashamed!). She was considerate enough to ask Anne if she spells her name with an e or not. She is so similar to Anne in many ways, and I hope they are going to be friends, and kick Gilbert out of their cool girls club!
Tumblr media
With everybody else. Gilbert has shown a great deal of sympathizing since the beginning of the series. He’d fight any form of injustice as much as he can, and show in action that he truly care for the others. And yet, he didn’t see Josie’s near-rape as something important to him. WTF! Have his hormones been raging so much that he forgot that girls are still human beings and not objects you can choose to ignore? He should be the first person to support Anne in her effort to defend Josie’s honor, and he failed monumentally!
Now I understand the title “the summit of my desires” in the context of this episode. That Frankenstein’s quote was taken from chapter 4, in which Victor Frankenstein finally found the solution to make his “creature” alive. Romance was the last thing that Anne had to overcome in order to become the full feminist figure she’s destined to be, and Gilbert unleashed that. Since (almost) nobody but Anne care to defend Josie, Anne will have to break the rules in order to make her point.
From a Shirbert perspective, this episode was a bummer (even worst than episode 2!), but for everything else that we love about AWAE, it was a fantastic episode. And of course, we got the Jerry and Diana kiss! Aaahh these two are breaking my heart because I can anticipate a tragedy coming for them

OMG THE EPISODE
That episode was a masterpiece, we got almost everything we wanted (RIP Derry, I’m so sad). AND THREE , count them THREE SHIRBERT KISSES!!!!!
Anne got a book from her parents! Which was so cute, and so important for her, the portrait of her mother! AHHH
MY GIRL DIANA GOING OFF ON GILBERT WAS AMAZING!! Thank you Dalia for hinting at that!
The girls in their grown up finery, wearing corsets and their hair up! AWWW
Anne running through Charlottetown, her hair falling down was so poetic and beautiful.
Elijah coming back, I’m so glad that storyline ended, it was important for him to come and grieve his mother, and it’ll be good for Dellie to have her brother there, to give her more memories of her mother when she is older (isn’t she the cutest baby!?)
Poor Winnie! We never really knew her feelings towards Gilbert, and I really didn’t want her to be hurt.
The note Gilbert left for Anne! It was so poetic and beautiful, I’m low-key happy she didn’t read it, because he never read hers, and it lead to more miscommunication and drama, which just tore our hearts to shreds, but thank you Diana and Winnie for finally getting those idiots together.
Matthew crying! My precious baby! Though he finally said his feelings and it was wonderful!

hey so just a reminder
Gilbert claims he doesn’t want to be a country doctor, he desires to figure out how to treat/save people and i adore it, but there’s one thing
He was on a trip around the fricking world and eventually came back to Avonlea.
He was prepared to leave the school early to become a doctor as quickly as possible, and eventually decided not to, to „work on farm with Bash, like they planned”.
So sweetie, do you think Paris and a sophisticated girl will be the option your heart would choose?
Lucas speaking Irish: is that you?

Props to Gil for being kind and respectful to Winnie while breaking her heart, for being honest with her and letting her know that anyone else would be the luckiest person alive to be with her.
Just, this episode once again reminded me why I love Gilbert Blythe so much, and I love the way they handled things.
I do also think it’s interesting that Winnie was more concerned with what people would think than her actually not having a future with Gil.

i’ll come to thee by moonlight
(a/n: this is basically the story nobody asked for but I somehow wrote? all it takes is seeing Anne with her own two eyes for Winnifred Rose to quickly understand Gilbert’s undevoted attraction toward her. Minor spoilers related to season 3. content rated G+)
Winnifred Rose sat snuggly between a tall blonde boy, of whom she noticed dressed quite fashionably and exquisitely for someone of his age, and her dear friend, Gilbert Blythe. She glanced curiously about the luxurious garden in which they sat at, as the beautiful blooms gently swayed from the early afternoon summer breeze on the island. She suddenly startled as her attention was swiftly refocused on the dainty, soft girl raising her voice in passionate cry as she finished the end of her poem. The crowd gathered around the small platform before them clapped in admiration at her performance, and she heard a loud ‘whoop’ from a group of boys seated in the section of chairs to their right. She clapped politely along with the others from Avonlea. The small freckled girl smiled shyly from her spot on the stage and gave a curtsy bow before exiting and seating herself in the front row next to a familiar head of auburn hair.
“Next, we welcome to the stage, Miss Anne Shirley-Cuthbert. Miss Shirley-Cuthbert will be reciting The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes.”
Winnifred watched as the young woman made her way from her chair up onto the stage. To her right, she sensed Mr. Blythe shift in his seat, slowly leaning forward in anticipation. Had it not been for this fundraiser organized by the spirited Anne herself, Winnifred would not be seated where she was today. Gilbert had expressed his excitement for the fundraiser in his last letter, urging Miss Rose to attend with him in order for her to finally meet this Anne he had fondly spoken of many times in the past.
Anne gracefully took her place in the center of the flower-adorned platform and clasped her hands together in front of her chest. Gilbert’s body inched even closer to the edge of his seat as the girl dressed in a luxuriously deep blue satin dress began to speak.
“The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees.
The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas.
The road was a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,
And the highwayman came riding—
         Riding—riding—
The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn-door.”
All around her, eyes that were nodding in tiredness or looking elsewhere quickly became fixed on the redhead’s delivery of the famous poem. It was as if a spell were overtaking the crowd, herself included in the magic this faerie was casting over them. Winnifred could not help but glance over at the curly headed boy. Wonder and awe were written clearly on his features, yet his own eyes held a secret that he had never revealed in all the time she had known him. Gilbert was in love. No, perhaps love was too light of a word. He was smitten, captivated, and completely bewitched by Miss Shirley-Cuthbert. A hidden smile made the corners of her lips turn upward at the realization.
As the poem drew to a close, Winnifred understood why this enchanting young woman had captured the heart of her close friend because she had been drawn into the same allure. Why Anne had no sooner breathed the final words of the poem than Gilbert was already on his feet clapping fervently with the crowd and shouting, “Encore!” The crowd seemed to follow suit and the tall blonde boy next to Winnifred joined in Gilbert’s pleas for more from Anne. Miss Rose saw the redhead glance purposefully in their direction as she beamed and bowed for those cheering at her magnificent delivery. The color creeping up her cheeks began to match that of her hair as Gilbert whistled and smiled so widely his dimples dotted his cheeks.
After an encore performance from Anne, the poetry reading ended and those attending the fundraiser dispersed and headed toward the refreshments located in another section of the majestic garden. Winnifred trailed behind Gilbert and the tall boy who had been sitting beside her, of whom she learned was also a friend of Anne’s, named Cole. They found Miss Shirley-Cuthbert surrounded by an entourage of men, women, and children alike, complimenting and commenting on the zeal they had experienced from her performance. Waiting patiently as she graciously accepted and thanked their praises, she suddenly came bounding over to them, smiling eagerly and laughing happily.
She threw her arms around Cole first and he spun her around once before placing her firmly back on the ground. “Oh Anne!” he exclaimed proudly, taking her hand in his own.
Miss Rose observed the interaction between the pair rather quizzically and stole another glance at Gilbert, who did not appear taken back by the gesture.
“You were simply marvelous! The way you proclaimed the last stanza nearly had me in tears!” Cole clutched at his heart for added dramatic effect and Anne nearly doubled over in laughter.
“We have both come a long way since our days imagining up all kinds of stories in my room at Green Gables, have we not?” Anne stated, catching her breath, and turning away from Cole to Gilbert and Winnifred.
Winnifred watched as Gilbert opened his mouth and his hand began to gesture in her direction when Anne abruptly cut him short by enveloping him in a tight hug. He appeared taken back as he nearly lost his balance, but his arms soon found their way around her petite waist.
“Thank you for coming!” she cried as they broke apart. “Really and truly, Gilbert. I daresay I might not have been on that stage if it had not been for your dear companionship after school these past weeks.”
Gilbert looked down at the ground, flustered at the unexpected recognition from Anne, a blush crawling up his neck from beneath his collar. “You were remarkable, Anne. I was only an outlet for your creativity and talent,” he said fondly, his eyes meeting hers as the two shared a moment in which Winnifred felt like she was intruding upon.
Anne was the first to break the trance by turning to Winnifred and taking both of her hands in her own. “You must be Miss Rose. I was so pleased to hear that you were attending the fundraiser. I hope you have enjoyed Avonlea. Before you leave, I simply must show you The Lake of Shining Waters. It would be a shame to miss such a glorious sight at this time of the year,” said Anne with nearly as much fervor as the poem she had just recited.
Taken aback slightly by her enthusiasm, Winnifred returned the offer with a genuine smile herself and squeezed the redhead girl’s hands, declaring, “How could I pass up such a lovely proposal for adventure, Miss Shirley-Cuthbert? Perhaps while we are there, you could read another poem? I do not think I can take another conversation about the latest medical practice from Mr. Blythe.” She shot Gilbert a teasing look and he shrugged in return.
Winnifred feared Anne was going to burst from elation—quite literally—after hearing her proposal and the redhead squealed delightedly. “Yes of course! I—”
However, before she could finish her next thought, she was being ushered away by a short, stout, grey haired woman who had been calling her name and informed her that she must meet one of the biggest donors of the fundraiser. Anne turned and waved, mouthing ‘Good-bye’ to the three of them as she disappeared in the flock of people.
“I think I know where your passion lies, Gilbert,” she smirked as he stared after the satin outline of the girl. He turned, giving her a puzzled look and she continued. “Oh please, dear friend. You may deny it until you are blue in the face, but your eyes tell me all that I need to know. Perhaps anyone for that matter. You mustn’t let someone like her slip away from you. She’s a rarity in this big world.” Winnifred would know, seeing as she had met many people from all kinds of places thus far in her short lifetime.
Gilbert stood there, his brow furrowed after listening to her words, his brain making an obvious effort to understand everything she had spoken to him. Then, it was as if a new dawning had just occurred to him, and the lines in his forehead smoothed. He put his hand lightly on her shoulder and uttered a ‘Thank-you’ before turning on his heel to go find the auburn-haired girl she assumed.
She stood there, arms crossed, feeling rather smug with herself for helping a friend in need. Perhaps one day, she would find an equal partner in life like Gilbert with Anne, but for now, she was content in experiencing more that this world had to offer. She was awakened from her reverie when Cole, who she had nearly forgotten was still standing beside her, spoke.
“I think you and I are going to be good friends,” he said with a glint in his eye that said, ‘I have been telling them the same thing for years.’ Miss Rose grinned up at him and accepted the gentlemanly arm he extended.
“Shall we drink to prosperity or continued foolishness?” she questioned as they arrived at the beverage table, handing him a glass of punch and taking one of her own.
“Both!” he chuckled, as they clinked glasses and each took sips of the sweet, orange liquid.
Winnifred would later learn that his toast would reign remarkably true.

Remember when Moody was breathing into that paper bag before Queens exams? Yeah that was me during the whole scene with Gilbert and Winnie’s father. That was me when Gilbert practically told Anne he wanted to stay with her. That was me this whole episode.

Story idea
Au ish I guess you could say. Jerry and Diana never kissed and she never stayed at his house
Anne's moping around after she discovered Winnie with Gilbert. She's love stricken and will do anything she can to win Gilbert's love back. But she's also deeply afraid and her fear stems from the abuse she's endured. She just wants to be loved.
She has an epiphany and begs Jerry for help. He's a boy and understands Gilbert. So she thinks. Jerry is hesitant and initially says no. Of course he gives in after she pleads with him (and throws herself in front of where he's supposed to be work, refusing to move until he changes his mind).
Anne is hopeful her plan will be successful. Only things don't go according to plan and she's terrified once she realizes that she's beginning to fall for Jerry in a romantical sense

People are discussing "first kisses" today and I'm like
Tumblr media
I mean, look at the sample size-
Anne- Gilbert (mixed feelings but i love some of the theories out there)
Anne- Charlie (first let him have a coherent convo with her then we'll talk)
Gilbert - Winnie (it won't be a surprise if it happens at all)
Gilbert - Anne and Gilbert- Winnie ( I'm sorry but my heart can't take this one)
Diana - Jerry (I'm rooting for this Moira!)
I'll add mine too:
Josie - Billie (at the rate Josie is going, I think the kiss will happen and Billy won't even know about it lol)
Ruby- Moody (I'm torn between Ruby understanding her self-worth and deciding to not think about Bois for a while & oh but they would look so good together!! I know I'm shallow)
Tilly - both Pauls (she'll kiss them both- no doubt about it-she da queen)

Chapter Ten: Is there anybody out there?
'Do you think the universe fights for souls to be together?
Some things are too strange and strong to be coincidences.'
"How long has he been there?"
"Like three hours, Winnie's meant to come for him in a while but he hasn't even showered," Bash replied, eyebrows raising. "I think he's gone crazy."
The couple was staring at the young man from across the entrance hall, Gilbert was curled up on the couch, scrolling through old facebook's pictures, he'd been there ever since Bash and Mary got up for breakfast and they didn't know exactly what was he doing, but he seemed way too focused on it.
"He probably doesn't even know the time," Mary said worryingly. "Has he eaten at all?"
"Dunno– Hey, Blythe!" Bash called out loud.
Gilbert gave a start a looked up, the dark circles under his eyes proving he wasn't at his best.
"Yeah?"
"Did you sleep at all last night?"
Gilbert frowned. "Yeah?"
"You look dead, man," Bash mentioned. Mary slapped his arm lightly and he quickly added. "I mean, did you have a nightmare or what?"
"No, I just... I'm looking for something," He shook his head, his attention going back to the laptop.
"What thing?"
Gilbert looked up again briefly.
"Something," He said quietly.
"Oh, so now you're keeping secrets, huh?" Bash walked up to him and leaned over the couch to see the pictures on Gilbert's screen.
"Stop that!" Gilbert complained, closing the laptop for a moment.
"Why on earth are you stalking a highschool classmate?" Bash raised a brow.
"I'm not stalking people," He said defensively. "I'm looking for someone."
"Looking for...?" Bash started, then his face lit up with realization. "This is about your dream girl, isn't it?"
Gilbert scoffed, but he didn't deny it.
"Blythe, you dunce," Bash said, but now he looked genuinely worried. "Tell me you're not seriously looking for this girl."
"What girl?" Mary asked excitedly.
"Oh no, don't get all happy," Bash frowned. "This ain't a real girl, he's been having dreams about a girl he probably saw in a magazine or something and now he has an obsession. This needs to stop, Blythe. You can't lose your mind before the Orchard's anniversary, I need you at your best!"
"Listen I know I'm not crazy!" He groaned. "Her face is just so... so vivid. It's like I've seen it from up close at some point..."
"Yeah, brains are funny like that," Bash took the laptop and pushed Gilbert out of the couch. "Get up and eat."
"Wait– NO!" Gilbert fell off, grunting as he landed on the ground. "Just five more minutes!"
_____________________
Anne had wasted the last ten minutes staring at a picture of her and Roy, trying to decide what to do with it.
The obvious choice was to throw it away, but then again, it was a picture of her first boyfriend. It was sort of special, a memory like that one it's worth keeping... right?
No. She had to delete that picture now.
Her finger hovered on the 'delete' option. Five seconds. Ten seconds.
With an exasperated scoff, Anne threw the phone onto the mattress and walked out of her room, making a beeline towards the back door and finding Matthew sitting outside while quietly reading a newspaper.
"Morning," She smiled, kissing the top of his head softly. "Anything interesting today?"
"Been quiet," He replied, folding the paper. "How was your night?"
"Slept like a baby," Anne replied blissfully. "I don't know what it is about Green Gables, but my bed is always so comfy!"
Matthew nodded. He picked up a plate that was placed next to him and offered a plum puff to Anne, which she took and ate happily. She sat close to him and stared at the rising sun.
"Do you think love is real, Matthew?" She asked, then quickly added. "Romantical love, I mean. Because I know love when it comes to friends and family can be real, and I have lots of it, but I... I wonder if it's worth my time to search for a romantic partner."
"Well," Matthew started. "If it is, I can't think of anyone who deserves to be loved more than you do, but if you decide to live on your own, I'm sure you will be just as happy."
"Thank you," Anne sighed. "But that doesn't answer my question, Matthew."
Matthew hummed, but he didn't add anything else.
_____________________
Gilbert could admit that he was acting a bit crazy.
Maybe he simply had liked a bit too much some girl his brain had created. Maybe the dreams that had come after the first were mere repetitions.
Maybe he was too so scared of starting a real relationship that he'd obsessed with a dream so he didn't have to go out with strangers.
Either way, he had a short period to relax before Christmas break was over, and he really needed time for himself, more importantly, he had to help Bash with the Orchard's celebration. He decided to push aside his crazy investigation, it was clearly just an excuse to run away from real life.
It wasn't like dating a girl nowadays equalled to an engagement, he could go to a few without them having to mean anything. Then why did it feel so wrong?
He was being ridiculous, love wasn't like in the movies, he wasn't going to find his soulmate in his first try. So better to prepare and be a big boy, face the facts like an adult, and accept that sometimes soulmates aren't real and you need to find your own regular partner.
What was love, anyway? Mary and Bash hadn't fallen in love at first sight, Moody had a crush on a girl he didn't even know and Winnie had at least three partners per month. Love wasn't real, it was merely a name for attraction and a bunch of chemicals doing their work so humans can continue to make babies and we don't fall into extinction.
So really, looking for a fairytale in a world that's so blunt and straightforward was a stupid thing to do.
He picked up his phone and opened Winnifred's chat. Starting to record a voice note.
"Hey, Winnie? It's Gilbert," He said. "I've been thinking about your offer... I'll bite. How bad can it be, right? Just one blind date..." He sighed. "Pick a girl and send me her number."
Taglist.
