AOGG CONTENT?!!? tell me, what is your favorite moment from the books 👀
hi hi hi! my favorite moment would have to be anne asking diana to be her bosom friend at the beginning of aogg!
"We must join hands--so," said Anne gravely. "It ought to be over running water. We'll just imagine this path is running water. I'll repeat the oath first. I solemnly swear to be faithful to my bosom friend, Diana Barry, as long as the sun and moon shall endure..."
..."You're a queer girl, Anne. I heard before that you were queer. But I believe I'm going to like you real well" - Anne of Green Gables (XII, "A Solemn Vow and Promise")
what i love most about the aogg books is the emphasis on female friendships and relationships so this moment, though simple, sets the theme going forward. I could honestly talk for days about Anne's relationship with the women in her life!

The two little girls walked with their arms about each other. At the brook they parted with many promises to spend the next afternoon together.
“Well, did you find Diana a kindred spirit?” asked Marilla as they went up through the garden of Green Gables.
“Oh yes,” sighed Anne, blissfully unconscious of any sarcasm on Marilla’s part. “Oh Marilla, I’m the happiest girl on Prince Edward Island this very moment. I assure you I’ll say my prayers with a right good-will tonight.”

It is a little surprising, but there is a parallel between Anne Shirley and Ilse Burnley that I haven't noticed before:
Anne Shirley and Diana Barry:
"I had had such a lonely, starved heart all through my childhood. I’m just beginning to realize how starved and lonely it really was. Nobody cared anything for me or wanted to be bothered with me. [...] You don’t know what your friendship meant to me. I want to thank you here and now, dear, for the warm and true affection you’ve always given me.”
“And always, always will,” sobbed Diana. “I shall never love anybody . . . any girl . . . half as well as I love you. And if I ever do marry and have a little girl of my own I’m going to name her Anne.”
Anne of Avonlea by L. M. Montgomery
Ilse Burnley and Emily Starr:
"Ilse glanced happily around her—poor little neglected Ilse, who found in Emily’s companionship what she had hungered for all her short life and who was, even now, being led by love into something of her rightful heritage."
Emily of New Moon by L. M. Montgomery
"Oh, we'll be happy enough, too. And we'll visit each other, you and I—and compare our children—call your first girl Ilse, won't you, friend of my heart—and—and what a devilish thing it is to be a woman, isn't it, Emily?"
Emily's Quest by L. M. Montgomery
I know that teary-eyed talks are not really Emily&Ilse's thing, but what Anne said applied to Ilse as well!
And these "I'll call my future daughter after you" moments are the sweetest! Anne named one of her twin girls Diana, while Diana Barry had her own little Anne Cordelia... I think that if Emily and Ilse had any daughters in the future, they would definitely name them after one another.

Your new hat is elegant, Diana, and so becoming. When I saw you come into church last Sunday my heart swelled with pride to think you were my dearest friend.
Lucy was looking sweetly pretty in her white lawn frock; she has got a beautiful colour since she has been here.

Anne and Diana
Tumblr media
The Urban Diction describes the term kindred spirits as: two people that make a special connection by sharing a bond that has joined them by the means of an experience that has drawn them together on a higher level of consciousness. We often spend our lives searching for that special someone who understands us and whose devotion will stand the test of time. Prior to her life in Avonlea and at Green Gables, spunky red-headed Anne Shirley longed for a kindred spirit/bosom friend. For years she made do with “mirror friends” and her own imagination to cope with her unhappy situations. Then when she was sent to Avonlea, and she was adopted by the Cuthbert siblings, she found her first kindred spirit in Matthew. The second kindred spirit she found was Diana Barry.
Tumblr media
A girl near her own age, of more traditional inclinations, Anne was ecstatic to meet Diana. Anne had to work hard to earn some of the Avonlea locals’ trust. After criticizing her hair and freckles, local gossip Rachel Lynde encounters the girl’s fiery temper and Anne must offer up a theatrical apology. At one point, Marilla suspects Anne of stealing and losing her special brooch. When he teases her and calls her carrots, Gilbert Blythe more or less had to have sense knocked into him via a school slate. However, from their initial meeting, Diana offered Anne friendship and showed her kindness others had not shown her before.
Tumblr media
For the first time, Anne is allowed to be a kid and she blossoms. For the first time, Diana embraces her own imagination and creativity. Together they grow into young ladies, they attend parties and dances, and have girlish adventures. They indulge in romantic fantasies, write stories, read poetry and novels. It is all very idyllic, but not without a few woes. As with every friendship, it is tested.
Tumblr media
One day when Marilla is away, Anne invites Diana over for an afternoon, and mimicking the ladies of Avonlea she serves her friend cake and cherry cordial. Or so she believes. In reality, the cherry cordial is a bottle of Marilla’s currant wine. Diana is soon intoxicated and when Mrs. Barry discovers this latest scrape, she forbids Anne from seeing her bosom friend/kindred spirit. The girls meet in secret, for a last farewell, and pledge their love to one another. When Minnie May Barry falls dangerously ill with croup, Diana comes to Green Gables for help. Matthew goes for the doctor, but knowing it is hazardous to wait too long, Anne takes matters in her own hands. Armed with ipecac, Anne and Diana go to the Barry’s and Anne works tirelessly at nursing Minnie May back to health. Anne is redeemed in Mrs. Barry’s eyes and with her blessing, she and Diana resumed their friendship once more.
Tumblr media
Anne and Diana’s friendship continued into their adult years; however, for a while they took different paths. Anne chose to advance her education and she had a teaching career, writing and publishing occasionally. Diana doesn’t attend college and decides to accept a proposal from Fred Wright, to settle down and have a family. After chasing her for years, Gilbert Blythe wins Anne Shirley’s romantic heart and they marry and have a family of their own.
Tumblr media
Their love and devotion enduring, eventually Anne and Diana had daughtersdaughters which they name after each other. If that is not proof that they were kindred spirits, I don’t know what is. It offers hope to the rest of us that someday we will each find a kindred spirit of our own.

"I think people make their names nice or ugly just by what they are themselves."
"That's a lovely idea, Diana," said Anne enthusiastically. "Living so that you beautify your name, even if it wasn't so beautiful to begin with...making it stand in people's thoughts for something so lovely and pleasant that they never think of it by itself. Thank you, Diana."

Anne totally should of ended up with Diana in this adaptation. Unlike other versions of Anne of Green Gables where Gilbert understands Anne more than Diana, AWAE Diana understood Anne more than AWAE Gilbert ever did.

I don't think if many people (or anyone at all) can relate to this post, but i see that many people were fans of Harry Potter or Percy Jackson or hunger games as kids, but i was an aogg kid from the very start. I read all 8 books when i was 9 or 10, and i reread it several times over the years, everytime with a new outlook on the world and myself.
Everything about it is nostalgic to me, from the moment Anne met Matthew in the train station, to her friendship to Diana, to her holding a grudge againts Gilbert for 5 years, to her silly mistakes in the first and second book, to her finding new friends in college and Ruby's death in the third book (which was hard to take tbh), to all those letters she wrote to Gilbert in the 4th book, to her marriage and the death of her first child, her meeting captain Jim, Leslie and Miss Cornelia in the 5th book, the 6th book where her children's adventures begin; the 7th book and the arrival of the lovely Merediths; and finally, the last book and the shadow of war over Anne's life, Walter's death and at last, her sons' homecoming and the beautiful ending which brought Rilla and Ken together. It's just that when you read the books you basically follow her all the way from her childhood to her girlhood and then womanhood, and then you start loving her children just as much as you love her. You live in Green Gables and Windy Poplars and Ingleside, you watch her grow old. You follow two generations of the lovliest people in literature. To me it was aogg from the very start and I'm glad about that, reading and rereading it is always somehow the reassurance that I need that the world isn't that horrible of a place, it's just messy, and in dire need for a cup of tea and good old friends you can visit old gardens with on your birthday :)
