Percy: I don't know what you're talking about, it was romantic!
Annabeth: You said you wanted to cut me open and live inside my skin.
Percy: Yeah. In a romantic way. I'm not going to do it, but if I could, I would because I love you so much.
Annabeth: That's not romantic, Percy, that's incredibly creepy and makes me scared to sleep at night.
Percy: Fine! You can cut me open and live inside my skin.
Annabeth: Stop talking about living inside people's skin!
Percy: It's romantic!
Annabeth: Nothing about living in someone else's skin is romantic!

Okay, you know earlier this week when I dropped a paragraph of a fic? I actually finished it, and the end isn’t the best so I’m posting it here and not on AO3.
Loneliness - (featuring my HoH Percy and Clarisse head cannons)
TW for attempted self harm and a generally bad mental space
Percy’s never really had a mentor. When he was young he was put in a few organizations as a mentee. The type of organizations that are supposed to make things easier on kids like him, brown and black kids with “authority problems”. They never really clicked though, sometimes it was him, a lot of the time it was the supposed mentor. He had never cared much, it’s not like they could help him in a way that mattered.
Then there was Luke. Luke who was tall and strong and quick and really, really, really good with a sword. Maybe some of it was a crush, but he had never met someone who he was so encapsulated by. Luke was cool, intelligent, and good looking. He was everything Percy ever wanted and ever wanted to be.
Luke left a bitter taste in Percy’s mouth and a scar on his hand and a distaste for soda. Luke left Percy with an even quicker brain and a knot in his stomach that turned into a murder plot for his stepfather. He drew Percy in time and time again with a hatred that was laced with unrequited love and left Annabeth with blood stains on her dagger and both of them with salt stains on their cheeks and the taste of ash on their tongues.
After Luke was Beckendorf. Granted Percy had had a bit of a crush on him too. Beckendorf was pure, not in the way some white campers might call Hazel innocent. He was just kind, and genuine, and warm. Percy looked up at Beckendorf, big, strong, brave, caring, and he thought this, this is something I could do. I might not be able to be a big hero, but I can do this. I want this.
Beckendorf left Percy with no body for the shroud to cover. He left Percy with inside jokes that would never again be completed and a desire in his brain to constantly be in the forges and to keep as far away from them as possible. Beckendorf left a hole in Percy’s heart that was filled by blood and guilt. Percy looks at the acid scars on his foot with a longing for the time when Beckendorf was taken by giant ants.
And after Beckendorf there was no one. Suddenly Percy was one of the oldest campers. A war veteran. Supposedly the strongest demigod alive. He wasn’t just a counselor now, of his cabin that was solely him, he was a senior counselor. Jake Mason sat in Beck’s seat and Percy cried because suddenly he was alone.
He shouldn’t feel alone. When Annabeth holds his hand while they wait for breakfast he shouldn’t feel alone. When Grover makes enchiladas in the kitchen of the Big House and they eat them together in a field Percy shouldn’t feel alone. When Nico comes running into Percy’s cabin telling Percy that Mythomagic is apparently run by demigods and that they made a card of Nico he shouldn’t feel alone.
It only gets worse when he’s back at home. His mom goes through their normal post-quest routine. She gives him time and space and love. She takes him to the doctor’s. His old prescriptions get refilled, adderall, meperidine. Sally tries again to find a demigod therapist, to no avail. They don’t celebrate his birthday this year.
He’s at Goode without Rachel and he has no other friends. He’s never really been good at that, the whole friend thing, and now it’s practically impossible finding someone who isn’t uneasy around him. He sits in the back of his physics class and eats alone at lunch and sleeps in Paul’s office during breaks.
A teacher hands him back an essay and there’s a paperclip in the corner keeping all the pages together. There is a B+ on it with a smiley face, and Percy takes the paper clip and sharpens it and tries to scratch his skin. It doesn’t do anything. His skin still won’t break, there is just a faint redness. Only after scratching away mindlessly for weeks does he realize that he’s writing words. Last words. “Go!” “Don’t let it happen again.” “Tell him I’m sorry.”
He can fill up his schedule with school and homework and swim and skating and basketball. He can wake up in the morning and eat breakfast and take adderall and carry around the other small orange bottle waiting for his skin to revolt against him. He feels disgusting and empty. Like a demon in a suit of skin that used to be Percy. He misses two years ago when the war wasn’t looming over head, when he and Annabeth and Silena and Beck would all hang out, when he and Clarisse had weekly midnight basketball games.
Grover knows. Grover’s gotta know. For one thing, there’s the empathy link. And Grover is calling multiple times a week, and he always asks how Percy is, if he’s alright. Percy lies “I’m all good man, don’t worry. How’s work?” Then Grover goes off on a tangent about pollution or some shit he saw a human do and the way he purses his lips when he’s worried doesn’t come back until they’re hanging up.
He hates it, the lying. He’s only told lies to protect others, when he doesn’t have enough information yet, when he needs to save them. Now he is lying for himself. How fucking selfish does he have to be? But he’s so lonely, and he can’t bare to lose anyone else. It feels like the smallest step out of line will make his world crumble.
So he lies. He lies his ass off, and he doesn’t know if he’s good at it, but he could be. When Annabeth comes over one weekend, all the way from California, and she asks about the pill bottle rattling in his pocket he says that it’s adderall and she turns back to the tv. When his mom asks if he’s made new friends he says yes, and proceeds to tell a mortal version of something that he and Beck did last year.
One day Rachel comes into the city to visit her parents. They’re sitting on a bench in Central Park and he takes the paperclip out of his coat pocket and goes to work on his wrist while they talk. It’s habit by now. Rachel stops in the middle of her sentence and gently pries the paperclip from his hands and in its place she leaves a blue eyeliner pencil.
Soon his arms are covered in names and words and horrifically beautiful drawings. Blue pigment against brown skin and pink scars, all swirling together. The pencil runs out quickly, but a week later, just as he’s about to take the paperclip back out, an envelope arrives. Sitting in the bottom is a new pencil of blue eyeliner. Percy throws the paperclip in the trash.
By Thanksgiving break Percy isn’t feeling good exactly, he’s feeling mildly better. Loneliness still hits him, in pangs. He’ll be walking to lunch and he’ll have to jump in the canoe lake because he can’t handle it, and swimming is a good excuse for missing a meal.
He wakes up early in the morning and sits in Rachel’s cave waiting for her to wake up. She makes hot chocolate and points out drawings she particularly likes, and then he’ll wash his arms off ready to begin again.
Days are filled with meetings. Meetings with Chiron and meetings with other counselors, trying to make up for being away at school. When he’s not in meetings he trains. Sometimes himself, but a lot of newer or younger campers. The disarming technique he teaches throws him back to Luke and he gives the campers a five minute break hoping the feeling leaves.
Evenings are being tossed between one person and another. Racing up the climbing wall with Annabeth and laughing at the top and sitting there for way too long. Stopping by the Aphrodite cabin where Drew will catch him up on everything he’s missed being away or being busy. He sits on the floor of the Hades cabin trying for the fifth time to understand Mythomagic.
Every night since he’s gotten back Clarisse raps on his door at two in the morning and they play one v. one on the basketball court until they end up on their backs under the stars. There’s rarely any talking. It’s dark outside and Clarisse has left her hearing aids in her cabin and he’s left his back in Manhattan. Not like he ever uses them in public.
He’s still lonely.
Maybe Clarisse can read his mind because she taps his leg and they sit up facing each other. He can just barely see her fingers in the moonlight.
“Sometimes people can be lonely not because they are alone but because they miss someone. You have a lot of people to miss.”
“Thanks for reminding me.” He signs back.
“Oh be quiet punk.”
They both break into laughter then, before she continues.
“Miss them. As much as you fucking want. I was in love with Silena, and she died, and Drew is a bitch about it, but she has a right to be.”
Percy is struck again by how similar he and Clarisse are, their lives and their feelings and their actions. The only difference is that Clarisse grants herself the freedom to do what she wants, and he’s scared to death of doing that himself.
“But, and do not ever tell anybody I told you this, a lot of people would miss you. You can pull away and feel lonely but you can’t disappear. Annabeth needs you, Rachel needs you, Nico and Will and Drew need you. And gods fucking dammit, I need you.”
Clarisse stands and pulls him up behind her. They part ways, heading back to their cabins. Percy mulls her words over in his head as he finally drifts into sleep, his body completely and utterly exhausted. Suddenly there is a blue-gold light, and he remembers Annabeth, and then everything is dark and there’s the smell of pine.

Kingdom Collisions XIV
Masterlist for other parts, more jercy, crackships and bad ideas
writing fic=more description=(hopefully) improve writing
no prewritten chapters=sporadic updates=as surprised as you about what happens
Tell me your thoughts, I'm insecure about this chapter. Also sorry for the long ass wait I haven’t felt in the writing mood but hopefully I'm back.
together or not at all. find him. find him. find him.
Crown Prince Jason’s dream starts as all his dreams do. Him sitting on a cloud looking over a burning meadow. He feels himself wince as if his body already knows its going to be hurt and then he is pulled under, under, under and suddenly the dream is a memory. One he had forgotten about, one he wishes he'll live through for the rest of his life.
"Prince," A soft, warm voice calls. "Are you in here?"
There is a moment of quiet, the crackling of the fire and the turn of the page the only interruptions.
"I'm here." The reply is gentle, and sweet, and full of the brightest days.
Jason blinks, looks through long blonde lashes. "Hello my Ardor"
Leo sinks into the couch, grabbing his hand with the need to be close and comfortable and together. "What are you doing here so late?"
"I had some things to research before tomorrow meeting with FreedomtoFeed."
The Captain of the Guards raises an eyebrow and gives a pointed look to the raunchy cover of the novel he has clasped in his hands. "That looks very appropriate for a feeding-the-people initiative."
He blushes crimson and shuts the book with a huff of embarrassment. "I finished the research."
Leo pulls them together until their foreheads bump gently, "I'm only teasing. But you should go to sleep."
"Will you join me?"
The fingers dancing at the nape of his neck still, and smoldering brown eyes catch his. "Of course."
They release twin breathes and move impossible closer, until lips brush against skin and oxygen is sparse.
"You are so beautiful," The Prince whispers, kissing his jaw. His cheek. Nose. Throat.
"Please kiss me." Leo is shaking with anticipation, arousal.
And who is Jason to refuse such a precious request? He brushes his lips gently across his Ardor's and groans at the softness he finds. Pillows, and peaches, and sweetness that only intensifies when it deepens. Their tongues dance, explore each other languidly. Like time is nothing but a suggestion. His fingers brush silken warm cheeks and dance across Leo's skin until they're resting on his thighs.
Jason is breathless when he breaks away, "You are—" His words are cut off as the Guard pulls their faces together.
"No talking now my Prince. Tonight we only feel."
Jason feels himself frown, as the memory becomes hazy, disjointed. This wasn't how it happened.
‘Together or not at all. find him. find him. find him.” Leo gasps, his head falling on the Prince's shoulder. "Jase, I can't—" He's cut off by a cry.
And suddenly all his beautiful brown skin is turning to ash under Jason's hands. He tries to grab on to anything, any part of Leo, but the more he holds the more ash comes away.
"Ardor?" He cries. This isn't how it happens. This isn't the way it goes. He can't go like this. They can't leave each other. He just got him back.
He can't, he can't, he can't, he c—
Prince Jason Grace wakes up with a scream, blunt finger nails tearing into his chest as he attempts to rid himself of the nightmare. And when his eyes adjust to the world he only knows darkness and despair. The love of his life is still dead and he is still far away from his dear kingdom. Actually he has no idea where he is at all. That thought is the final pick in the ice and suddenly his body is wracking with sobs. His life is a complete fucking mess. And he doesn't want to do this anymore. Every event piles onto his chest like boulders until he can't breathe, until he is hyperventilating.
Far from home; Leo is dead; kidnapped; tortured; his husband is—
Wait where is his husband? The thought shocks him out of his panic so fast he's reeling as he sits up. The cold floor underneath his fingers ground him to the present and he pushes off the concrete onto shaky legs. He feels so weird, like his body is not his own, like he's been forcibly removed from it and shoved into a whole new one and now he has to learn how to be human all over again. He feels like he's died. Slowly he stumbles around until he hits a wall and then plastering his right hand to it he walks. Or more like drags himself along, nails scraping against the brick and a bare shoulder scratching against the roughness.
His eyes are useless for anything further than his feet and he sees no evidence of light. But the room, or what he's beginning to suspect is a hallway, continues so he to keeps going. Someone will fill in all the blanks in his memory but first he has to find his husband. There is a deep chasm in his chest and he has the ugly feeling it will only start filling when he sees those green eyes and floppy curls. It almost disgusts him how much he needs to see the Prince of Mare. It's like his body, his heart, has forgotten about Leo entirely. He feels sick to his stomach at the thought so he banishes everything but the need to get out of here. Suddenly he hits a wall, hard enough that he knows there’ll be a bruise tomorrow. With a silent prayer to gods he didn't care to believe in, he turns his body and keeps walking. Right hand still on the wall.
There is nothing and no-one. He feels likes he's in the inside of a black hole. There is not even the faint sounds of outside. It is just his dragging feet and his cracking nails and the ringing in his ear from the sheer lack of sound.
He will get out of here. He will get out of here. He will get out of here. He will get out of here. He will get out of here. He will get out of here. He will get out of here. He will get out of here. He will get out of here. He will get out of here. He will get out of here. He will get out of here. He will get out of here. He will get out of here. He will get out of here. He will—
There's a scraping sound. Someone gives a sharp inhale. A pinprick stings his neck. He is never getting out of here.
together or not at all. find him. find him. find him.
Prince Jason clutches his rolling stomach, and without warning throws up the little contents that may have been in there. Before he even opens his eyes he knows whatever he will see cannot be good. Even behind his eyelids it is unnaturally bright and he can hear hushed whispers coming from somewhere. They sound angry. He will get the brunt of it.
"Well well well," A rapsy voice echoes around him.
He forces his eyes open and blinks back the harsh neon lighting to see Annabeth Chase, his previous kidnapper, and Grover Underwood.
"It's such a pity you don't remember me." She pouts unhappily, but there is nothing but viciousness in her grey eyes.
He wonders what he should remember.
"How do you feel Jason?"
"Like I died. Like I want to get out of here. Like I need to see my husband." He spits at the man leaning against the wall so casually.
"All in due time. But while we have you here I think we could use you."
"Why should I help either of you?" He curls his lip, anger making his vision blur, "You," He points a disgusted finger at the blonde girl, "Kidnapped me and Percy and then proceeded to torture us." She giggles and he wants to bury that sound six feet underground. "And you," He looks to Grover, the advisor to Mare and Percy's friend. He looks every bit the enemy. "I don't trust you one bit. Not if you can have her in your presence so calmly."
"I'm not looking for your trust Prince," The man, the being, scoffs. "I just need your cooperation. Otherwise Annabeth here has permission to get as creative as possible."
Grover tilts his head to her, a silent conversation passing between them, and then he leaves without so much as a glance to him.
"I'll never tell you anything." He growls at her.
She grins, pretty white teeth gleaming in the horrible light. "Let me tell you a story Prince Jason Grace, about the day you lost your sister."
"My who?"
She gives a secret smile and begins.
Twenty seven years ago a girl with blonde hair and grey eyes was born to The King and Queen of Mare. She was a sweet little girl with pigtails and a sharp mind and she kept her parents on their toes every second. One day this little girl's mom came to tell her that she would soon be getting a little sibling to play with and care for. The little girl was undeniably excited, or as excited as you can be when you're three years old and get told you're getting a small person just like you. Needless to say a little boy with blonde hair the exact same shade as hers, and blue eyes as bright as the summer skies was born. While she had eyes the exact shade of her mother’s he had their father’s eyes. And it was dangerous, but nobody knew that then. The little girl loved him immediately and with all her heart. They spent every moment together. Growing up and learning and loving each other as if it was the only natural thing to do. But when the little girl turned eighteen she received some horrible news. Her mother had died. Her brave beautiful mother who gave her kisses and taught her chess and spent hours reading to them. Understandably the family was devasted and they took it very hard. The girl— not so little anymore, grief will do that to a person— was angry and broken and unwilling to listen to the world that had so unfairly taken from her. So she rebelled against their father and lost their mother. And in her quest to feel something she engaged in nefarious, sinful, delightful activities. It was there that she met the love of her life. The Crown Princess of Hekima. Reyna. They got married within a year and have been together ever since. But the girl found out something about her mother's death and she was so furious as she rightfully should be that she renounced her title and vowed to bring down the very thing that killed her beloved mother.
together or not at all. find him. find him. find him.
“You are terrible at telling stories.”
Annabeth smiles like a lion ready to pounce. "Figured out who the little girl is?"
"You." He heaves, chest constricting as he takes her in.
"And her little brother?"
"How come I don't remember you?"
"When we kidnapped you we put a serum in that would make you forget certain aspects of your life." She shrugs as if she's discussing the weather.
"And you feel no remorse for hurting your brother?" He spits at her feet.
Her grey eyes flash like steel and she gets into his face. "I have no family."
"Why tell me at all? Why not just let me be ignorant?"
That makes her smile- no, bare her teeth. "Because unlike me Jason Grace you would do anything for the people you love, for the people you think you owe. No matter the cost."
"I'm not telling you anything." His voice is hard. Like the concrete he is pressed into. Like thunder.
"Nah uh," She grins at him, "I'm your sister remember. You wouldn't deny your sister the information she wants."
"Try me."
It must be a sibling thing because a challenge enters both their eyes and it shines bright enough to dull the horrid neon lighting in the room.
"How do we kill Crown Prince Perseus Jackson?"
He blinks at her. Blinks again. And then he starts laughing. Knee slapping, stomach aching, wheezing kind of laughter. He can't breathe. He can't even see because his eyes are so filled with tears.
"I'm serious." She grinds out.
"How the fuck should I know? We don't discuss ways to kill each other," He rolls his eyes, muttering "Even if we do think about it."
"You must know. You have to know. It is woven into your DNA. You meet each other in every lifetime and die. You have seen it for centuries."
His fading laughter vanishes completely as he whips his head up to look at her. "What?"
"You and Perseus. You guys are immortal deities who appear whenever the world needs to be remade.” Her voice is impatient as if he should know this. As if she’s explaining it to an incompetent child. “You as the healer and him as the destroyer. But people and beings alike have been killing you for centuries because your presence means they will cease to exist. You have watched each other die multiple times. You have revived each other multiple times too."
"So you're saying we're soulmates?" He can hardly believe what he's hearing. It sounds like the biggest load of bullshit he's ever heard.
"No. You're more than that. You aren't just two halves that fit to make a whole. You aren't even two wholes that fit to make a pair. You are each other. You do not exist without him. He does not exist without you. You are not bound by souls or hearts or whatever us humans believe is the epitome of love. You are bound by life."
"I don't believe you." He rolls his eyes. This is garbage. This is nonsense. This is not real.
"I don't really have time to argue with you about it. Just tell me what I need to know and you will be spared."
"Why should I?" He's not even considering it. He would never betray his husband like that. Would never put the Prince in such volatile danger.
"Because if you don't," She gives another of her terrifying grins, "The kingdom you know and love will crumble to nothing."
"You're lying."
"It's already started Jason." She cackles, "The more time you spend with Perseus the more he will bleed into you and you into him. There are already cracks in the castle. Do you really want to risk it?"
His heart is pounding but she is wrong. Isn't she? "I don't believe you." He says again.
"Oh Jase," She gives him a pitying look and he wants to rip her eyes out and toss them in a lake to watch the fish. "The Castle of Caelum is falling to the ground. Your Prince's blood spilled on mom's roses and they crumbled to dust. There are splinters in the stone. They will become chasms. Either you help us or you risk your precious kingdom turning to debris right before you."
"And what's in it for me?"
"You'll be spared from the slaughter of the monarchs."
"And my husband?"
"He will die. This is non negotiable. One of you must, to stop you from fulfilling your fates. We have someone with him right now."
Wrong answer. But he bows his head and pretends to mull it over. Inside his thoughts are whirring like a new machine and plan after plan formulates in his mind.
"Okay Annabeth Chase, my sister," He smiles soft and sweet. She returns it in triumph. "I will join your rebellion. I will tell you how to kill my husband."
And as she picks him up from the floor and removes the invisible ties keeping him pinned to the concrete he allows himself a secret smile of his own. It hints at the malice, the destruction, to come. They made the biggest mistake of their lives when they took him away from the Prince. They will pay.
I'm coming for you Percy.
So Crown Prince Jason Grace loops his arm through his sister's and makes friends with his enemy.
together or not at all. find him. find him. find him.
------------------------------------------------------------------
I don’t really know how I feel about this part. Feels a bit all over the place but at least we’re getting some clarification which is cool. Also are Annabeth and the rebels the good guys or bad guys for wanting to save the world from Jase and Perc? *raises eyebrow curiously*

oops, i (fake) love you, ch.13
Annabeth
A few days after the double date blow up incident, Piper approaches Annabeth.
The blonde’s kind of shocked, to be honest. She’s fully prepared to see them waiting to pounce on her, and demand she let go of Percy. After all, the date had been nothing but a disaster. But alas, here is Percy’s friend, looking meek and remorseful, and all Annabeth can think is why.
“Um, hey,” Piper begins awkwardly, once she stops in the space besides Annabeth’s locker. She continues fidgeting with the hem of her shirt.
“Hey,” Annabeth says, just as awkward. “Anything I can help you with?”
“So, listen. Ah, I know we got on the wrong feet last week and that we acted really mean towards you. Especially at the diner, all those questions and rude remarks were really uncalled for. But you’d have to understand that we were just trying to protect Percy as our friend, and it just so happens that you’re the—the focus of his attention.
“Anyway, what I’m trying to say is, um, I’m sorry, we’re sorry for everything. We totally could’ve been better in handling the situation. And we’d just have to accept your relationship, even though it’s, um—I don’t know—uh, weird,” Piper finishes, and she looks at her in the eyes.
Annabeth doesn’t know what to say, everything is a little overwhelming, so she blurts out the first thought in her mind. “If you don’t mind me asking, why do you think we’re weird?”
A frown makes its way onto the brunette’s face. “Out of everything I said, that’s what you picked up on?”
“I heard the rest, don’t worry, but why? Why are we weird?”
“Uh, duh." Piper rolls her eyes like it's the most obvious thing she has ever heard. "You two are like polar opposites of each other. And you were enemies for so long, it’s kind of hard to imagine you two both being couple-y and stuff. I mean- I don’t know, I find it hard to think that you probably use fighting to turn each other on.”
First of all, ew. Annabeth scrunches her nose at the thought. “Yeah, no.”
“But other than that, I accept the apology. I’d understand where you’re coming from. I’d also be wary of myself, if I were in your shoes.”
Piper raises her eyebrows. "Sure."
"I know I'm not exactly the bubbliest person--"
"That's an understatement."
"Yeah, whatever. But truth is, I mean no harm to Percy or to your group. We just want to be together without causing harm to others. And I just want to say sorry if you felt otherwise."
"Yeah, I understand." Piper beams at her. “Great. Friends?”
She smiles back. “Sure.”
“See you at lunch later! Sit at our table so we can bond better!” Piper hollers as she walks towards her next class.
Despite the relationship being fake, Annabeth’s glad something genuine will come out of it.
...
Lunch arrives and Annabeth is a bit hesitant to move at Percy and his friends' table. She's honestly unsure how they are going to treat her, especially with all the tension she experienced before. But Piper kind of expected her to, and it would be quite weird if she can't even sit with her own (fake) boyfriend.
So she shakes her nerves and walks towards the direction of their table.
She first spots Percy, whose hands are flailing as he explains or argues something with Grover and Jason. Her gaze then lands on Piper. When their eyes meet, Piper immediately perks up and waves her hands around.
"Annabeth! Come sit here!"
Now that she's seen, she can no longer make an excuse not to sit with them. She cautiously approaches them and sits herself beside Percy.
"Hey," he greets. She playfully pinches him and returns the greeting.
She turns back to watch the table warily, and strangely enough, they aren't watching them like hawks do at their prey. Jason even manages a slight smile.
Percy whispers slowly at her. "Don't worry. Piper already told us that you'd be sitting with us today."
"Yeah?"
"Yep. So stop sitting so still, you look like a statue."
She can't help the scowl forming on her face. "You do know how to get on my nerves."
Then, when nobody's looking, she whispers to him. "Prick Jackson."
Percy laughs (the audacity!) and pinches her cheek in mocked fondness and in an annoying voice, "You're so cute!"
At that comment, all of his friends' gazes turn to them. Grover and Jason look like they're trying hard not to laugh; Rachel even smiles, and Piper just grins.
"Well, I never thought I'd see the day you two are together, but I have to admit, this is too cute!" Piper says, genuinely.
"Cute like 'you make me want to play my reed pipes' cute," Grover says.
Jason scrunches his nose. "That is so weird dude."
"I don't know. It's like, Grover's dirty talk," Rachel comments.
Piper agrees. "It's like a kinky line from a 60s films. Imagine this: You go into a bar and say something like," she changes her pitch to sound deep like a man, "hey, you make me wanna play my reed pipes."
"Yep, that is so weird," Percy chimes in and laughs. The rest of the table laughs too, and Annabeth finds herself holding back a smile.
…
Percy
"Remind me again why this is necessary?" Percy grumbles as he slouches on her passenger seat.
Annabeth just hums and swats his feet off her dashboard. "Get your ugly feet off my car!"
He snorts. "That would mean me leaving this car and walking back home, which is very tempting."
She doesn't even deign him a response, but a sharp glare from her prompts him to keep his very beautiful feet back to her carpet.
He huffs, "Fine. Just so you know, I hate this."
"I know. You've told me about 50 times already."
"And I'm telling you again, just in case you finally acknowledge my feelings."
"No."
"You're evil, you know. Pure, puppy-kicking, steal the last pizza evil. The worst of your kind."
She says nothing, and continues humming to the song on the stereo, like she's mocking him. Percy isn't even surprised, to be honest.
"I don't even understand this! I know you hate shopping."
"Yep."
"So, why? Why are we subjecting ourselves to torture?"
"You do know you're kind of hopeless, right?"
"That's not a proper reason."
"Minus 10 points."
"What? This is graded?" he asks incredulously.
"Everything you do is," Annabeth says. She makes a very tiny space with her thumb and index finger. "This is how close you are to getting a D."
"No, shit."
"Yes, shit."
They stop at a red light. He stares at her, and she stares right back, unyielding. They refuse to break the challenge up until the traffic light changes to green and cars behind them start honking angrily.
He breaks the stare with a pout. "Fine. You win this round."
"Told you sooo," she says teasingly.
"You're the worst kind of annoying," he quips, just so he can have the last word.
As they are passing through the traffic, Percy's gaze snagged on a picture of the Golden Gate bridge on a store's front glass.
"Golden Gate looks so red. And it's not even red."
"It's officially called international orange," Annabeth comments. "It's around 1.7 miles long and 90 feet wide. And did you know that a safety net under the bridge during its construction saved the lives of 19 men? These survivors were officially called members of the 'Half-Way to Hell Club'. Also, an earthquake struck it before it could even be completed. Aaand I think I'm gonna stop now. Did I say too much? 'Cause I feel like I said too much."
Percy just looks at her, amazed. "It's- you're okay. How do you even know all of that stuff?"
Her ears burn red and she refuses to look at him. "Oh, you know, it's just a thing I picked up from living in Cali."
"No, don't even downplay that. You're amazing."
"Not really."
"Yes you are! I'm guessing you just won't happen to know about how tall Empire State is?"
Annabeth not so subtly rolls her eyes at him, but she smiles nonetheless. "Don't even get me started on that. But just in case you're wondering, Empire State Building is about--"
…
About half an hour of listening to Annabeth talk about facts about Empire State Building to the wonderful beams and arches of some classic 'architectural masterpiece' (he forgot the name, he's not really into history anyway), they finally end up at some mall.
He holds back a sigh. "We're really doing this?"
"It's not like I have much of a choice. C'mon, quit babying around. It's not like going inside will kill you or anything."
It does, in fact, kill him.
Not to be overdramatic or anything, but how can he expect to come out alive when he's being hounded by the salespersons every way he turns?
Annabeth's not doing well either, but she manages to fend them off with a well-placed glare. Percy briefly wonders if she can command an army with just her gaze. It doesn't seem far from the truth.
They pass by a small boutique after picking up some clothes Annabeth deemed decent enough for him. And honestly, she's probably right. He never really paid much attention to his clothes; he just tends to pick whatever seems clean enough from the closet (or the floor, if he forgets to do his laundry). But seeing himself in the mirror after Annabeth throws him a shirt that, in her words, "brings out the color in your eyes", he has to admit that she probably has some kind of magic.
Once they enter the store, Annabeth immediately goes for the dress shirts and hands him a navy blue one. After changing, he opens the door to be appraised at.
"So, what do you think?"
Annabeth's gaze peruses his body, and something close to impressed settles in her expression. "You do clean up nicely, after all."
"That's the nicest thing you've said to me," he comments with a laugh.
"Yes. And probably the last one too," she replies dryly, while inspecting the fit of the shirt on his body.
"I'm beginning to think you're using this as an excuse to touch me, Chase."
"In your dreams."
"Ha. Like I would consciously dream about you."
One side of her mouth quirks up. "So does that mean you subconsciously dream about me?"
"I don't know. I prefer to call them nightmares. Y’know, like those things that haunt you at night."
She pinches his side. "Ass," she says, but there's a smile threatening to grow on her face.
She turns to the sales lady, "We'll take this."
By then, his gaze has already wandered to the pale yellow sundress hanging off the clothes rack. He picks it up and taps the blonde.
"Hey, why don't you try this one?" He then gestures to the dress he's holding.
Annabeth frowns. "We're here to shop for you. Not me."
“Doesn’t mean you can’t try something for yourself.”
She throws him a look.
"Fine. I just thought that this will look great on you. It can’t hurt to try."
She fingers the hem of the dress. "I don't know.."
The sales lady smiles at them. "You should probably listen to your boyfriend. I think the color compliments your tan."
Percy has half a mind to deny the statement, before remembering that they are in fact, must appear to be dating for real. So he settles with an "I told you so" and a smug look directed at Annabeth.
The said girl just rolls her eyes, mutters "fine", and takes the dress from him. She quickly disappears into one of the dressing rooms.
"Little fight?" the lady asks.
He laughs. "Oh no. She's just being difficult. Don't worry, I'm used to it."
"You kind of look like you are."
"That's because I've known her for almost half of my life."
"Really? Must have been a puppy love then?"
Percy doesn't know what to say so he just agrees with her. "You could say that."
"That's cute. Hope you're both still together until marriage."
He blushes to the tips of his ears because if this lady only knew the truth about their arrangement, she wouldn't be saying that.
Thankfully, he's saved from making a response when Annabeth comes out of the stall.
True enough, the dress fits her like a second skin. Her tan seems to glow with the color. The hem of the dress ended just a few inches above her knees, making her long legs stand out. And yes, they were long enough to keep his gaze trailed down her legs before realizing that he's staring. At the enemy no less, who happens to have really great legs.
Red tints his cheeks. Damn it. He might just have discovered a weakness.
"Well?" Annabeth asks.
He wishes they could've stopped at that food stall earlier to buy bottled water. His throat feels parched. "Erm...nice."
"Nice?" She repeats.
"Nice. You look nice."
"That's a lie. You look gorgeous, dear," the sales lady comments.
"That's what I meant… in less eloquent words," he whispers under his breath.
The blonde hears him. "I'm surprised you can say eloquent," she teases, but nonetheless she looks happy with the words.
Rolling his eyes at her, he tells the woman, "We'll take this too."
Annabeth frowns. "I'll pay."
"Nope, it's on me."
"I can and I will."
"No, seriously, I'll take this. You can pay for dinner later."
She looks like she still wants to argue but settles for it at the end. "Fine. But I'm choosing the place."
"As you wish."
Once Annabeth has changed back into her jeans and they begin heading towards the cashier to pay for the clothes, Percy catches the sales lady winking and gives him a thumbs up.
He’s so mortified he almost misses the shy smile on Annabeth’s face as she turns away from him.
Almost. But not quite.
He shares the smile.
…
Ahhh apologies for the late update! To be honest, I have not started any draft re: chapter 13 two (or three) weeks ago, until I received an email notif that someone left a comment on this story. So yeah, I decided to read it again and fell in love with the story once more, and I am back hahaha. Updates may be sporadic cos even in this quarantine I am working at home (woes of public accounting) and sometimes i feel not motivated enough/inspired enough to write a chapter that i’ll love.
But yeah, i think i like this one (cos percabeth are being cute), and hopefully, I’ll have some free time to write the next chapter soon.
That’s it! Hope you like this one and leave your thoughts down below! Thanks!!
P.s. hopefully this didn’t sound like i’m writing you a business email or whatever. lol

Control - Dark Percy
Summary: Percy is at his last summer at Camp Half-Blood before he goes to live in New Rome for college. His powers are growing exponentially and he struggles for control. (I just really love dark Percy okay? Also yes, this is a lowkey songfic from control - Halsey.) Beta read by @tevi-tevi
Genre: Oneshot Dark!Percy fic, no warnings
Word Count: 6617
Read on AO3
“I sat alone, in bed till the morning
I'm crying, "They're coming for me"
And I tried to hold these secrets inside me
My mind's like a deadly disease”
Percy’s sword arm hurt. He can’t remember how many monsters he’s killed. They just kept coming and coming. How did they get into camp? There were so many of them now that Percy couldn’t see his friends fighting. Suddenly the air turned humid and hot, like it was trying to choke him. As he turned around the comforting landscape of Camp Half-Blood slowly melted into an all too familiar horror. Tartarus. It can’t be. I can’t be back.
More monsters came at him. He recognized everything he’d ever fought or read about. Percy yelled out for help, calling his friends, Chiron, Poseidon, anyone. He looked back to see where they all were, but rather than seeing them fight, he saw something so much worse. A mountain of bodies, stacked up to at least a giant’s height. Blood flowed down like rivers. All the faces were familiar. His mother. Annabeth. Every friend or ally he had ever known. Percy stopped fighting.
His sword was stuck. He turned towards it and found not the Cyclopes he thought he was slaying but rather his best friend. Percy tried to pull his sword out from where it resided in Grover’s chest but somehow he pushed it in deeper. The satyr fell to his knees. Percy tried to speak, to say anything. But the words won’t come. All he can do is stare and hold his best friend’s dying form. Percy called on the water, hoping that it could help heal. The waves came swirling around their heads, but would not go towards Grover. Soon there was enough water to separate them from everything else, trapping Percy in a dome made from the ocean.
“You did this.” Grover spoke before melting into the soil.
Percy fell forward and started to yell frantically. For help or for grief, he didn’t know. The water started to close in. Percy thrust his hand out, trying to push it away, but water from the ground started to rise instead. Quickly. Percy couldn’t control it. He swam and thrashed around, desperately trying to find a way out. Soon the water was over his head.
He couldn't breathe. The water felt clean and normal but Percy couldn’t breathe. Panic filled his lungs where air should be and he prayed to his father.
A deep booming voice resonated through Percy: “You’ve gone too far. You are no longer worthy of the gifts I have given you.” His father’s voice echoed in his head, over and over again until he couldn’t hold his breath any longer.
Percy jolted up in his bed, sweat clinging to him. He took deep breaths trying to convince himself it wasn’t real. But Percy had had visions before. Is the camp under attack? He stood up and walked out of his cabin without bothering to find shoes. He ran towards the Big House where Grover was staying and walked in without knocking. Opening the door of the satyr’s room, he let out a sigh of relief. Grover was in bed, surrounded by tin canes and snoring very loudly, but definitely not dying.
He considered waking the goat to discuss the dream but decided to let him sleep. It was probably midnight. It could wait until morning. He walked back toying with his camp necklace. There were five beads, one for every summer he’d known of this world, as well as a trident pendant his father, Poseidon, gave to him after the Giant War. Once Percy got back to his cabin, he tried to go to sleep, but every time he closed his eyes, images from the dream danced around. After about an hour of restlessness, he got up and headed for the arena.
Percy didn’t know just what it was about saving the world a few times that made people act differently around you, but since the whole Gaea thing, the harpies that guarded the camp and threatened late nighters like himself didn’t really bother him anymore. He, of course, didn’t mind this as sword practice after a bad nightmare was his go-to therapy. He’d either tire himself out to the point where he had to go back to sleep, or he’d sit there practicing jabs and strokes until sunrise where he would sneak back to his cabin and pretend he got up with the rest of the camp. Tonight was the latter option. By the time the sun came rolling around and he was getting dressed for the new day, Percy’s arm was tired and the bags under his eyes were prevalent.
Annabeth met up with him after breakfast, flipping through papers as she walked. “I’m captaining capture the flag tomorrow, you’re leading offense, I’ll take defense.” Percy nodded his head and slipped his hand into hers.
“Sounds like a plan.”
“Not quite. These are the plans.” She gave Percy half of the papers she had. “Those are all my battle strategies I wanna try out, choose one soon so I can match a defensive plan.”
“Ah, great, more homework,” Annabeth laughed at him and turned towards the cabins.
“I’m on cabin check, I’ll catch you later!”
“Wait, Annabeth!” he called after her. He hadn’t seen Grover yet and he knew that if he talked to Chiron, the centaur would make into a bigger deal than it was, but he wanted to talk to someone about his dream.
“What’s up, Seaweed Brain? Is it about Rome, have you heard back?” Percy shook his head. He definitely did not want to think about college right now. It had been hard enough graduating high school that spring, what with his grades and the fact that he’d missed most of the junior year, courtesy of Hera.
“No, I just wanted--” Percy faltered. He didn’t really know how to describe his dream. Annabeth just looked at him, waiting for him to continue. As he thought about, one thing about the dream bothered him almost more than anything else.
“Is it, I don’t know, possible for a god to...take away powers?” He tried. Annabeth just raised her eyebrows in confusion. “Like, if Hephestus wanted to take away Leo’s fire ability, could he do that?”
Annabeth looked down in thought. “I don’t know, Perce, maybe? I mean I imagine if they could, they would have done it to all the demigods that supported the Titans. Why?”
She was looking at him with concern, all stormy eyes. He didn’t want her to worry so he cracked his signature lopsided smile, giving him that special Percy-Jackson-idiocy look. “Just thought about it,” It seemed to have worked as Annabeth just laughed.
“See you later, Seaweed Brain.”
Percy smiled and waved her off. He used to hate the fact that everyone, even Annabeth sometimes, took him for being the happy-go-lucky dumb one. He joked around a lot, and yeah, he didn’t do great in school, but that didn’t mean he was incapable. Lately, however, he almost appreciated the persona people had made for him. The only time his allies delved from that idea was when he was on the battlefield.
Then everyone’s ideas changed. Rachel said he looked fierce and terrifying. Frank said he fought like a demon. Everyone always wanted battle Jackson on their side and were afraid if he wasn’t. It never bothered him much at first, but now it kind of scared him. He’d take happy-go-lucky over demon-fighter any day.
“I paced around for hours on empty
I jumped at the slightest of sounds
And I couldn't stand the person inside me
I turned all the mirrors around”
A wave of demigods all strapped up in armor gathered at the entrance of the woods. It was time for capture the flag and Percy had just explained everyone’s roles, courtesy of Annabeth’s strategy.
He was readjusting his straps that he couldn’t seem to make fit right, despite having done it hundreds of times. He hoped the game would go over well, but Percy’s head just wasn’t in it.
He’d had more nightmares of drowning, and to top it off, he’d gotten a letter back from the college in New Rome. As much as they were “pleased the former Praetor” wanted to attend, his grades weren’t good enough to get into their marine biology department. He would have to write another entrance essay and pass a STEM test to be accepted. Percy knew they were being generous, they did mostly deal with preoccupied demigods, but he still felt flustered and angry.
“Focus on the game, Jackson,” he grumbled to himself as he tightened his shoulder strap. Percy uncapped Riptide and headed out into the woods to get to his post before it started.
The plan was fairly simple, but the Ares cabin was leading the other team. They didn’t have much more strategy than hit everything you see. There were two offensive teams. Percy’s team was the distraction, leading the Ares defense out to fight. The second would retrieve the flag and bring it back to base, where Annabeth’s team was defending in several groups.
The fight broke out fairly quickly and half of the other team’s defense was on Percy’s group within minutes. They would need to plow their way through these guys in order to get the others to come, making the flag vulnerable.
For Percy, going against the other campers was fairly easy. He had three on him, two bulky Ares kids and one Demeter kid. He disarmed the Demeter kid first, stunning him so he wouldn’t have the opportunity to use any plant magic, and slashed and blocked with the other two fighters. His body was on autopilot from all the battles he’d been in. Unfortunately, those battles were life or death. This wasn’t. Percy went too hard. He slashed towards the left of one and turned to hit him with the butt of his sword, knocking him to the ground. He stepped in close enough to the next one that she couldn’t use her sword and hit her jaw with his forearm. He felt bad for a moment, but the strategy was working. The rest of the offense came up to avenge their teammates.
He tried to take on the bulk to the campers to give the rest of his team a better chance. They were going one to one while Percy was in four to one. His experience didn’t fail him. At this point, he might’ve even been able to beat Luke. Campers went down left and right. Too quickly. Percy’s mind wandered to his dream, the monsters' bodies that went down only for them to be revealed as his half-blood friends. He felt the panic rise up. His movements became slow and one of the campers got a hit in on his arm. He felt one approaching from behind. Percy’s body moved before his mind. He’d lost the Curse of Achilles long ago but sometimes his body seemed to forget and his only instinct was to protect his back.
Percy summoned water from the creek to blast the three in front of him. He turned around and thrust his hand out to the camper, expecting a water wall to push her down. She fell back, but there was no water. Percy realized with a start that he’d controlled the water in her. He had pushed her back. Without even touching her.
Fear overtook him and he dropped his sword to run to her side. “Are you okay? I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean--”
“Percy, it’s okay, I just fell,” Percy looked at her furrowed brow. She didn’t know. He’d let go as soon as he realized and she didn’t know. He apologized again, or maybe it was several times all rushed together. He pushed past everyone else who had stopped fighting and ran for something.
The ocean. It always calmed him down to sit on the shoreline. It smelled so strongly of the sea and of home that once he got there, Percy almost jumped in to escape his thoughts. But something held him back. Honestly? He was afraid to. How could he have done something as violating as control another person’s body without meaning to? He could still see Annabeth’s face, in fear of him in Tartarus when the met up with Misery. He did that.
Percy could hear the hooves coming up behind him before Chiron spoke. “Percy,”
He turned towards the centaur and nodded. “I’m sorry I left, sir,”
Chiron put his hand on Percy’s shoulder and spoke evenly. “It’s alright, though I will admit I am curious as to why you did. Your team won the game and when dear Annabeth went to find you, the others said that you ran off, after knocking several members of their team unconscious.”
“I’m sorry about that really, I didn’t realize--I don’t know.” Percy sighed and looked down. Chiron had the same effect as his mom did: feeling like you disappointed them was the worst feeling in the world. And Percy was no stranger to bad feelings.
“They are all resting up in the infirmary, perfectly fine. It will serve them good motivation to spend their time in the arena wisely. Now, why don’t you tell me what’s happened?”
Percy did. As he talked, he found himself realizing things he wasn’t aware of before, at least not fully. His restlessness since returning home last summer. His struggle to separate fend-for-your-life battles and training exercises like today. He even told Chiron about his dream and his fear of drowning.
“I’m afraid that maybe one day, I’ll need to control the water to help and I won’t be able to or...or maybe I’ll control it too much.”
Chiron nodded, his face a mask. Percy guessed that after thousands of years of teaching, you could probably hide any reaction. “Percy, you have been through a lot for your young age,” Understatement, Percy thought but didn’t interrupt. “These nightmares and worries are normal from someone in your situation and even expected. However, with your abilities, you need to discover control. You have done well training, but how much time of your training has been devoted to your unique powers?”
Percy thought for a moment. Chiron had a point. His summers at camp had mostly been spent working on his swordsmanship. Sure, he’d practice every now and then, and he almost always used his water abilities in combat or during war games. However, he’d never really practice in order to strengthen those abilities.
“Percy, I recommend that you use this summer as an opportunity to make sure you know your limits before you leave for New Rome. If you would like to avoid using this...blood bending, then you need to make sure you know what your powers feel like, and what their limits are.”
Percy thanked Chiron and walked back to his cabin quietly thinking. He definitely didn’t want to go to New Rome with his powers out of control -- they already thought Neptune was bad enough. He could definitely put some more work into his training.
“Percy, wait up,”
Annabeth came running up to him just before he stepped into his cabin. “Hey, you alright?” Her wrinkled brow and stormy eyes made him smile.
“Yeah, all good, Chiron just gave me some advice.”
“Okay, I was going to head down to the fire with Piper, you wanna come? Jason will be there,” She smiled and held his hand.
“Yeah, okay,” He laughed.
They walked to the amphitheater like everything was fine because, for the moment, it was.
“I'm well acquainted with villains that live in my head
They beg me to write them so they'll never die when I'm dead
And I've grown familiar with villains that live in my head
They beg me to write them so I'll never die when I'm dead”
Percy spent almost the entire day with Annabeth. Normally, that’s not something he would complain about, however it was spent alternating between writing his essay and studying math. Not his favorite activities but at least she was there to help him. Without her, he probably would have put the essay off until the week of the deadline, and it definitely would have been less articulate. Annabeth always had a strategy, even when it came to Percy’s education. This time it was “finish as soon as possible while still being good so you’ll impress them”. If they followed her timeline, Percy would be ready to take the test, which New Rome kindly allowed Chiron to administer, in about a week.
Needless to say, Percy needed to blow off some steam. While the other campers headed to the campfire after dinner, he trudged towards the woods. He thought if everyone was together in the amphitheater, he could be alone to follow Chiron’s advice. Part of the reason he’d never focused his training on his Poseidon abilities was that no one knew how to teach him. No one knew the limit of what he could do--not even Percy.
When he got to the creek, he started with just relating to the water. He stood in the bank and just focused on its power. He could feel it rushing, sense its wildness. He always felt a connection to the water; it was reckless and strong, it refused to be controlled for long, and more than anything it wanted to be free.
Percy wanted to start simple. He willed just a small line of water to rise. It was easy, nothing he hadn’t done hundreds of times. The point, however, was discipline. He dropped the water and stepped out of the river. He concentrated on raising one side of the creek, then the other. The whole stream oscillated back and forth.
Then he started making shapes with the water. Small things, at first: A sphere, a cube, a pyramid. Then he went for intricate. He started to recreate Poseidon’s cabin. First, the basic shape, a generic house. Then the memorized details of spending summer and summer there. The shells embedded in the walls. The curve of the window planes. He was so focused, he didn’t hear it.
Something slammed into his back and threw him to the river. The falling of his cabin-sculpture was enough to startle whatever it was just long enough for Percy to turn around to face it.
Of course, it was a giant scorpion. Percy had his fair share of luck with them. He reached into his pocket but Riptide was gone. Probably floated downstream when he fell. Percy was pinned under the monster and wouldn’t be able to stall long enough for the sword to reappear. As the scorpion's pincers rushed forward to end Percy Jackson’s life, he thrust his hands towards it, trying to push it off.
The monster went flying into the nearest tree. It couldn’t move but wasn’t dead yet. Percy had done it again: controlled the water inside another being. Apparently just as the human body had 80% water, monsters had their fair share too. Unlike during capture the flag, Percy was reluctant to let go. The thing that attacked him was at his mercy. It would be so much easier to end it like this. Even as he thought about it, water started coming from inside the scorpion, swirling around them. If he could take down monsters with just his thoughts, everything could be so much easier. All of his quests, done in half the time. Right before the last of the water was gone from the monster, Percy saw Annabeth’s scared face in his mind.
He let go. He didn’t even finish the monster off with his sword; he felt too guilty for that. It crawled away back into the woods. Percy fell to the ground. He couldn’t breathe. There was panic and guilt pushing on his chest and he had no idea what was happening to him. He couldn’t breathe. The creek responded to his anxiety and pushed water against him, pulling him into the creek. The water was soothing and helped calm his breathing but he still felt the weight of the sky on his chest. Percy realized he was moving upstream. He wasn’t controlling the water, which meant something else was. He started to fight it but stopped quickly. Could it be his father?
Percy let the water take all the way to the ocean. He fell in and instantly swam under, looking for any sign of Poseiden. In the waves, a shimmering figure appeared. It solidified into a woman with dark flowing hair and a soft smile. Percy wasn’t sure how to react so he bowed. “You’re the Nereid that helped me in Santa Monica?” Despite Percy accidentally wording it as a question, the woman held her smile.
“I am, child. It has been a long time since we first me, though I have always kept an interest in you.” She brushed her hand on his cheek and Percy felt warm currents. She still sounded so much like his mother.
“Did my father send you?”
“Not this time. I come for you only; we are shielded from his gaze.” Percy furrowed his brow. Why would she not want Poseidon to know they were meeting?
“It is okay, young hero, no wrong has been done. I simply come with advice.”
“Advice for what? Why haven’t I seen you in so long?” She laughed, a soft sound that reminded Percy of swimming with his mother in the frigid waters during their trips to Montauk. His favorite memories.
“Child, you are more powerful than you know. Like Poseidon, I must keep my distance. Playing favorites among heroes is something Olympus looks down upon. But you are the favorite of the sea, Perseus, and the sea stands behind you.” For some reason, he didn’t mind that she’d called him by his full name.
“What do you mean?” Percy was confused and felt disorientated. “What can I even call you?”
“I have gone by many names throughout your history, though I was never as well known as my sisters. You, child, may call me Maera.”
“Your sisters?”
“The Fifty Nereids, you have met some of them. Amphitrite is married to your father, and I believe you know Calypso without introduction.” Percy’s face warmed. He hoped it wasn’t noticeable underwater. He would always have a soft spot where Calypso was concerned.
“As for what I meant, I think you know. You are growing stronger, but you still have more to gain. To unlock yourself, you must push the limits, Perseus, but be wary. You can do incredible deeds. One day, you may even be able to rival your father. In order to get there, you must keep focus. Do you understand, child?”
Percy slowly nodded. “I think so, but I don’t get why I need to practice. There isn’t much more than Titans and Giants and those are over with.”
Maera brushed his cheek again. “Because one day, a choice of power will come to you, and you will need to be prepared for it.”
“I don’t want power.”
“And that’s what makes you worthy of it. I must go back to Poseidon’s court.” She started to fade back into light. Percy reached out to her, not wanting her to go yet.
“Wait!”
“We will see each other again, young hero, I promise. Follow your heart!”
And just like that, she was gone. Again. Percy stayed underwater for a while, not wanting to leave the safety. He sent out a silent promise to Maera that he would do as she asked.
He walked back to the cabins and ran into Annabeth.
“Hey! Are you...you’re wet.” She stared at him like he was on fire and could only be dosed out by a puzzle.
“Yeah.”
“You’re never wet.”
“Yeah.”
“Are you okay?” He felt bad for cutting her short, but he didn’t know what to say, except about meeting Maera and something told him that he should keep that to himself. He cracked the Jackson smile.
“I’m sorry, I just started working on training, y’know Chiron’s advice, and I’m pretty tired.”
She gave him a worried smile and kissed his cheek. “Okay, well, get some rest and we’ll work on your essay tomorrow?”
He nodded and kissed her goodnight before heading back into his nightmare filled bed.
“I'm bigger than my body
I'm colder than this home
I'm meaner than my demons
I'm bigger than these bones”
Not even Chiron could’ve come up with a more intense training regime. From then on, Percy was entirely focused. He would get up every morning before camp broke and run the length of the beach, racing against various sea animals, or sometimes Blackjack. At first, he had no chance. As the days passed, he started to get closer and closer to winning. He was still yards away from the hippocampi, but he’d bested two dolphins.
Then he would eat breakfast with Annabeth, working on his studies. It was difficult as he was more restless than ever, but Annabeth was determined--and it paid off. He finished his essay in a week and a half and took the STEM exam by late July. His score certainly wasn’t outstanding but he passed, which was enough for the marine biology program.
After that, he was either in the arena, the woods, or the ocean. He would spar with the Athena and Ares kids. Hand to hand, he had yet to beat Clarisse, but he was a lot closer than he’d ever been. She was actually trying now. When it came to swords, however, no one came close. He usually trained with them to keep up the practice, not get rusty. But now he was trying to improve his skill. He didn’t go easy on them. It took a month before he could beat every member of both cabins in one day. As a favor (that may or may not have stemmed from swapping shower times and chore charts), the Hephestus cabin built him three super-powered warriors that could keep up with him. When he first went against them, Percy felt like he was sparring Luke, Chrysaor, and Quintus (or rather, Daedalus) all at once. It was finally a good challenge. It took two weeks before they needed repairs. After that, the warrior bots needed fixed every night.
“Come on man, what are you training for? The bronze versus sword Olympics?” Leo joked. Percy offered to teach him as payment for the constant repairs. He found teaching helpful, it reminded him of old tactics. Soon he had a class of about half the camp that he taught three times a week. Even Annabeth and Jason signed up for a couple. When he wasn’t teaching, people came to watch him fight against the bronze warriors, watching for tips. He’d gotten good at blocking out excess noise and just focusing on the battle at hand.
Unlike the arena, his time spent in the woods and ocean were private. He would never tell Annabeth, but he was practicing this new blood bending technique. Only on monsters in the woods, and only to a point. He hadn’t killed any with it, and he didn’t plan to. At least, not anytime soon. He had gotten a fair grasp on it. He could now pinpoint how he wanted the monsters to move, rather than just away.
In the ocean, he worked on bending waves and currents to his will, shaping water and utilizing it. He focused on summoning hurricanes and controlling them. His stamina improved enough that starting a storm didn’t wear him out anymore if he was careful. Though it did make some of the campers who were previously enjoying a nice sunny day upset with him. He talked more with creatures under the surface. Rather than just talking to them when either he or they needed help, Percy developed relationships with them. Learned from them on how to better navigate the ocean and his training. Sometimes he would even go looking for a sea monster.
He always won.
One day, Percy skipped out on dinner to stay under the surface. Not entirely voluntarily. Some fish had gone back to Poseidon with the knowledge of Percy’s training and since then his dear old dad would send various underwater menaces Percy’s way when he couldn’t be bothered to clean up after them. Normally it was fine. Just a big fish or a scaley being, nothing to be too worried about. This time, Poseidon went too far. He sent a skolopendra.
Shrimpzilla was worse the second time around. He was pushing currents against it and throwing sharped water its way, but it wasn’t easy. Percy was defending himself well enough, but just went he tried to go in with Riptide, it all went wrong. One of the tentacles grabbed Percy, the sharp ends tearing into his skin, and threw him out of the water. He went flying. Great, Percy thought, If I don’t die from impact, Zeus will be sure to shoot me down. He landed hard just outside the mess hall, some forty yards away from the shore. As soon as he hit down, the ground shook, as if he weighed enough to pressure it. A small earthquake.
Percy was admittedly pissed. He didn’t ask for his dad’s fights. He certainly didn’t ask to be thrown by some crayfish monster. He didn’t even ask to be a half-blood, which is what it all came down to really. He turned his anger into fuel, called upon water from the air to strengthen him. He ran charging at the ocean. About halfway there, his feet picked up from the ground. The storm he was causing was strong enough to lift him up. In the back of his ADHD mind, he wondered if this counted as Jason’s flying and if that would put him in hot water with Zeus. As he was lifted to the monster, who at this point had emerged from the water, he thrust his hand out and called on the water swirling around him to create a weapon in his hand. He came down on the skolopendra, driving a water made trident right in between its glassy eyes. The monster dissolved under him and he used just a little bit more strength to guide him back to shore (where campers had started to gather) before dismantling his hurricane, leaving him soaking wet.
But Percy wasn’t done yet. No, of course not, he always had something to say.
“Really?!” He shouted at the ocean in a voice that sounded a lot more malice than his own. Several campers stepped back.
“What was that?!” He threw the water trident into the water, it sailing well beyond what should have been capable. He imagined it going all the way to Poseidon and punching right into his desk. “Hmm, I don’t wanna deal with fucking Shrimpzella, so I’ll just send on over to my favorite son, Percy, yeah?!” He didn’t know what else to emphasize his point, but he was angry with his dad, so he uncapped Riptide and threw that into the ocean for good measure. “Then again you never were good at cleaning up your messes, huh, dad?”
He started to walk away but paused. He tore the trident pendant from his necklace off and threw it into the water.
“You can have that back too,” he said, though the malice was gone, and he just sounded tired.
Percy kept his head down as he walked to the cabins. One of the campers tried to grab his arm and stop him, but Percy growled out a “Don’t touch me,” and kept going. Only later did he realize it was Annabeth and apologized to her.
No one brought up the sea monster, at least not around Percy.
“And all the kids cried out, "Please stop, you're scaring me"
I can't help this awful energy
God damn right, you should be scared of me
Who is in control?”
They were lucky that the Golden Fleece made the camp barrier so strong. The monsters that had gathered just hit against the barrier, causing no damage. A few had followed some new demigods to camp, and then called for backup. Normally, the would just wait it out until they left, but it had been a while. Chiron let Clarisse lead a group to “dispatch” the beasts. Percy counted three Laistrygonians, two Cyclopes, and something that resembled a leopard crossed with a shrimp.
“Group One: take on the giants, Jackson you take point. Rodriguez, you lead Two to go after the Cyclopes. Chase, you’re with me. Attack plan twenty-three.”
The broke up and prepared to exit the barrier. The plan was to divide and conquer. Separate each monster so they couldn’t work together, stay in pairs so it’s always two to one. Percy was paired with someone from the Apollo cabin, Ashley. They would stand back and use a bow while Percy got in close with his sword.
The fighting started the second they left the camp line. Percy could hear the Cyclops in the distance, but focused his attention. He ran at one of the giants while arrows went over his head. He played it simple. Ducking under the Laistrygonian, he slid in between its legs, slashing the calf. The monster fell over and Percy twisted as he stood up to drive his sword into its back, vaporizing it.
He signaled to Ashley to go after the nearest giant. Together they ran towards it. Ashley aimed a flash arrow right on his forehead, stunning him, while Percy rolled through and slashed at the chest. The other two campers fighting got the idea and jabbed their weapons into its sides. The now bigger group went to help with the last giant, who was already on the ground. Percy looked around to take inventory. Two giants down, one Cyclops was missing, and… Annabeth fallen. Whatever the leopard thing was, it was on top of her, claws deep.
Percy felt anger and panic rise in his chest. He was too far away to run to her in time. The Cyclops. It was backed into pond. That would give him enough strength. Maybe. He ran towards it, breaking the pattern. Splashing into the water, he called on its power and rose up. He used the Cyclops’ head like a springboard and jumped into the air. When he landed, he focused his power into the ground, taking in water from the pond, from the air, even from himself. A tremor rolled through the ground, knocking everyone off of their feet. Percy thrust his hands down and with them fell each monster. He imagined their lifeforce, the water in them, in his hands. He slowly made a fist. Then he took the driving force and punched the ground.
After that, everything was a blur. He’d used a lot of his strength. The monsters were dead. He was at Annabeth’s side. She was awake. The cuts across her midriff were bleeding, but they weren’t deep.
She was okay.
Percy blacked out.
When he woke, he was in the infirmary. His head felt like he had banged it against a concrete wall for fun. Annabeth was there, asleep on the chair. Percy sat up and rubbed his eyes.
“You were out for just a day, but I imagine you’ll need a few more for recovery.”
Percy looked up. A man with rugged features and green eyes stared down at him. Poseidon.
“Dad?” He wanted to ask why he was here, but his voice was so raspy, he barely got out the single word. Poseidon gestured to the table next to him. A cup of iced nectar was there. Percy gratefully took it.
“Percy, you are very powerful. After all, you are my son.” Poseidon looked at him as if trying to gauge whether or not his words were sinking in. “But you must be careful when using your power. What you did on the hill, not even I use that ability often.”
Percy was confused. Moreso, Percy was angry. “You’re kidding, right?” Poseidon just blinked at him.
“I have been trying to get you to help me understand what I can do since I was twelve! I only see you when the world is about to end!” Percy yelled. As much as he had forgiven his father for, there was an equally long list of things he hadn’t.
“You send me quests and monsters and expect me to risk my life for you, and now you think you have full range to question my abilities? If you wanted to be able to do that, then you should’ve been there when I was discovering them.”
If Percy had been strong enough to stand, he might’ve pushed the god. Which probably would have been a bad idea. He imagined he could get away with yelling at his father, but at the end of the day, Poseidon was immortal and all-powerful. He wasn’t sure what to expect for a reaction. He did not expect Poseidon to nod.
“I understand why you’re angry. I would have liked to have been there for you, to train you myself, but there are rules which I must follow. And there are rules which you must follow.”
“Rules?”
“Demigods are limited by their bodies. There are given godly power but are not born in something that can handle it. I appreciate you trying to connect with the ocean, and gain control over your abilities. But if you keep on your path, you won’t be the one in control. You will burn yourself up, and I am not speaking in metaphors.”
Percy wanted to ask why he was given them. He wanted to yell at Poseidon for trying to mentor him. But he stayed silent.
The god walked over to the nightstand and placed something down. “I must return to my court. I would advise adhering to my warning.”
And just like that, he was gone, melted into water that disappeared before it touched the floor. Percy’s energy to be angry with his father melted with it. He reached over to the table to find what Poseidon left. It was the trident charm he had thrown in the ocean weeks ago.
At least the god had been listening.
Annabeth stirred and he set the pendant down.
“You’re awake.” She muttered.
“And you’re not,” He chuckled back. She reached over and took his hand, but wouldn’t quite meet his eyes. “What’s wrong?”
“Percy, what you did…” She struggled for the words. “Some things shouldn’t be controlled.”
Percy felt like someone punched his stomach. Those were the exact words she’d said to him in Tartarus, only instead of looked terrified, now she just looked worried. He didn’t know how to respond.
Chiron stepped into the room.
“Percy, I am sure that you do not want to hear this, but you must be careful.” Percy sighed and looked down. He didn’t argue. Chiron was a strong mentor, and even though he didn’t want to talk, Percy knew that he should listen.
“I have never seen powers like yours in my lifetime, and I’ve taught many heroes. What you did, it was godlike, Percy. I do not want your demise being caused by your gifts growing.”
“Chiron, I--” Percy faltered. He didn’t know how to explain it. He still felt as if he shouldn’t talk about the Nereid, but it was beyond her advice. He wanted to understand his limits, his capabilities. “I’m not sure if I can help it from becoming stronger.
He looked down again, speaking softly.
“I’m not sure what I’m becoming.”

Half-Blood Love Chapter 2: The Truth within Percy and Y/N
Word Count: 1,484
Pairing: Percy Jackson x Reader
Author: sabi959 (Wattpad), I’m just the translator, the plot and the way of writing is all from sabi959.
Translator: Deka
Warnings: Nope
Now…
Today Percy and I have our anniversary, 1 year and 5 months. I’m waiting for him in my house; he was supposed to come for me to go to our favorite restaurant, as always, he’s late. I was sitting in my sofa in the living room to wait for him, watching one of those TV shows that are so silly that you laugh out of nothing, and accidentally fell asleep. I woke up because I felt someone talking inside my head. A feeling? A hunch?
“Call Percy”
Why? Who are you?
“There’s no time for explanations, you’re in trouble”
Wha- what troubles?
“Run!”
I started hearing groans, it couldn’t be Nancy, she had gone to play bingo with her friends. The groans were getting louder, while a rot smell appeared in the room. Suddenly, there was nothing to be heard, until a big monster came in. It was like 3 cows all together; with the top of a bull and legs of goat… it looked like a chupacabra. The strange voice started to speak again as the monster came closer, he looks pissed off.
“There is a ring and a necklace besides the small table, pick them up”
Without having second thoughts, I grabbed them. The necklace turned into a big bronze sword, or that’s what it looked like, and the ring transformed itself into a circular shield. The chupacabra screamed in a very awful way and looked at me; obviously I screamed too and run outside as fast as I could, with the weapons. I hide behind the barbecue grill and searched for my phone in my bag (yes, I still had it). I saw the reflection of the giant monster in it, and discovered that it had already seen me. Tears starting coming out of my eyes, I tried to find Percy between my contacts. Once found, I called him.
C’mon… pick your phone up, pick it up…
The chupacabra came closer to me slowly, the call was still on hold, I saw my sword and shield while waiting. I turned around when I saw a blinding and hot light; the monster could spit fire, great. Percy didn’t answer, I’ve called 3 times now, still on hold. Maybe it was because I was in the backyard and I didn’t have enough signal; I took out my heels, grabbed my weapons and put my phone between my cheek and shoulder. I ran to the other side of the yard where there was a table, I turned it and hide behind. Oh! Percy answered!
“Y/N?”
“Percy, you have to come.” I cried, the chupacabra heard me and threw the table. I, obviously, screamed.
“Y/N? Are you okay? Damn it, Y/N, answer me!” The phone flew out of my hand when the chupacabra grabbed me by my dress. I fell on the grass and bumped my head and back, when it tried to grab me again, I pointed at him with my sword and hide behind the shield.
“Stay away from me!” The sword slip out of my hand, so I pointed at it with my finger and a thousand of lightings came out of it. The monster fell electrocuted and I looked at my hand.
“Wh- How did I do that?” I wondered, asking myself the impossible.
“Y/N!” I recognized the alarmed voice instantly.
“Percy!” I ran to him and hugged him tightly, seconds after I started crying in his shoulder while he moved his hand along my back.
“Y/N!” Grover shouted; he was running towards us, but without his crutches. The he began to take out his pants, my eyes went wide at that moment, he had hairy legs! Like… really hairy, they looked like sheep legs. What was that?
“Grover?!” I was surprised, “Are you half sheep?”
“No, sweetcheeks. I’m half goat” He said.
“Okay… wait a second… What was that things that attacked me” I asked, I didn’t understand anything. Grover approached the monsters’ body and watched it in detail.
“It’s a minotaur” He exclaimed.
“AND WHAT’S A MINOTAUR DOING IN NEW YORK?” I was terrified, yep.
“Don’t get alarmed. We’ll talk inside, alright?” Percy said, putting an arm on my shoulders.
“The minotaur has something to do with where you go without telling me?” I asked looking at him at his eyes, in which were forming little waves of anger.
“Yes” He whispered, closing his eyes. “I’ll tell you my truth… and yours too, okay?”
“Okay… let’s go inside”
We were sitting in the same sofa I was before the monster attacked, nobody spoke. Percy was looking at me, kinda intimidating me; Grover was nervous and let out a few goat noises, you know, the “Blaah!”
“So…? What happened?” I tried to break the ice.
“Percy…” Grover looked at his friend.
“I don’t know where to start” He said, looking at the floor.
“Right from the start” I suggested.
“Well… you know that in Greek Mythology there are 12 gods?” I nodded, “Hmm, long ago the gods began to have... affairs with mortals, and then they had children. These kids are called half-bloods or demigods”
“Wait a minute,” I interrupted, “are you telling me that… you’re a…”
“I’m a demigod, Y/N.” Percy confessed, I gasped and a tear fell down my cheek.
“Why didn’t you tell me anything, Perseus?” I angrily got up from the sofa and went out to see the yard. The minotaur wasn’t there anymore, in its place there was golden dust.
“It was for your protection, Y/N” Percy took my hand in his, “I am so sorry, honey”
“Percy…” I was going to say something, but I closed my mouth instead, it was silly.
“Yeah?” He asked.
“Then… your father is a god?” I wondered looking at the floor.
“Yes, my father is Poseidon, God of the seas” He answered proud.
“So, you can control water, and talk to fishes and horses?” I asked.
“Yep” Percy grinned, I kept silence.
“So… if Poseidon is your father, who is my father?” I looked at his eyes for a few moments; I couldn’t take my eyes off him.
“Your eyes… they’re so grey, like storm clouds” Percy told me.
“His father could be Hermes, Nemesis, Apollo, Ares or Zeus” Grover announced, coming near us, I knew it because I could hear his hooves hit the ground every time he took a step.
“I don’t know, could be Ares… she’s like Clarisse” Percy said, taking his eyes off me and glanced at his friend.
“Oh, oh, oh! What about Athena? She looks like Annabeth!” Grover jumped a little.
“It couldn’t be, she lived with her mother until she was 12” Percy gave up and threw himself on the couch.
“Clarisse? Annabeth? Who are they?” Uh, oh, jealousy taking over.
“You’ll meet them soon” Half-goat boy said.
“Percy…” I whispered.
“Yes, honey?” He looked at me.
“Before the minotaur attacked me, I heard a voice inside my head. He told me to grab a ring and a pearl necklace, and then they turned into a sword and a shield” I got up from the sofa and looked towards the backyard, I looked everywhere in search of threats. Behind the table were the weapons, but turned into their jewelry form, I run there and picked them up.
“What’s that?” Grover asked.
“The ring and the necklace” I answered.
“Can you give it to me?” Percy said.
“Sure” I passed them on and Percy looked at them for a long time.
“Activate them, every demigod has to do it” He told me, giving me back the accessories.
I took them and put the ring on the table beside the couch. I looked at the necklace in my hand, thinking about how to activate it; first time was just luck, right? I pulled one of the pearls and, surprisingly, it turned into a sword, Grover jumped by the sudden change.
“Wow!” He said, “It’s like Percy’s”
“Can I see it, Perce?” He searched for it in his pockets and took out a pen, he took out the top and a big sword came out. “Wow!”
“It’s awesome, right? Watch this.” He show me a trident within the handle and blade of his sword, below it there was an inscription, the words were flying and then I could read Aνακλυσμός, meaning… riptide.
“Cool” I said taking my ring, I pressed the diamond in the middle of it and it turned into the same shield.
“Wait…” Grover interrupted, “Isn’t that… Zeus’ symbol, Percy?” He got up from the sofa quickly.
“It’s a… a golden lightning?” Perce asked nervous.
“Yes, it is, bro” Grover answered.
“No, no, no, this can’t be happening” My boyfriend walked from a corner to the other, never stopping mumbling.

For @achillesmonochrome based in this AU
--
Annabeth splayed out on the bed. Two hours listening to Percy rant and rave and then another hour helping him fine tune his shrine for the billionth time.
Why couldn't he just use a candle like a normal person?
Piper kicked open the bedroom door and stood there, arms on her hips, eyes flaring. Annabeth sat up and grinned. "You look sexy."
Piper stormed over and pushed her down, straddling her hips. "There's no amount of flattery that can save you now. You've crossed the line, Bethany."
Settling her hands into the nice curve of Piper's hips, Annabeth rolled her eyes. "He's my best friend."
"And that's fine! But using Grover-" She jabbed Annabeth's chest. "That's just cheating."
"You say that like he's actually going to come down and pick one of them," Annabeth huffed.
"I like to believe in love."
"And that's what makes you a sucker." She locked her grip and rolled them over, her hands snapping up to pin Piper's in place above her head. "You look cute like this."
Piper grinned mockingly. "Not happening."
Annabeth groaned and dropped her head. "Pipes-"
"Nope!" In a smooth move even Annabeth couldn’t have calculated, Piper slid one leg under Annabeth’s outstretched body, locking it over her shoulder and flipping her over. She bounced up before Annabeth could grab her again. “No sexy time for you until you apologize and agree to stop helping Percy in his worthless crusade for moon ass.”
“No.” Piper flipped her hair over her shoulder and fixed Annabeth with a pointed look. Fine. She could dig her heels in too. Annabeth crossed her arms. “If you’re going to be a nuisance about this, I’m not cuddling you tonight.”
Piper’s face fell for a quick second before hardening. “I don’t need cuddles.”
She was such a liar. She was almost as bad, if not worse, than Percy was when it came to demanding casual physical affection. If Percy was an octopus then she was a koala.
Clingy as fuck.
“Okay. Then we’re both fine.” Annabeth pulled her hair up into a tight ponytail. Piper’s eyes traced the bare skin of her exposed neck and shoulders. “I’m gonna order Taco Bell.”
As she passed by Piper, she deliberately held her body back, refusing the barest hint of skin-to-skin and smiled meanly at her girlfriend of three years. Piper frowned as she passed, the frown slipping into a scowl the moment Annabeth had her back turned.
“I don’t need cuddles,” she heard her mutter.
Annabeth snorted. Yes, you do.
She grabbed the Taco Bell menu pinned to their takeout board and flipped through it. Fishing her phone from her back pocket, she opened up the delivery app, eyes still trained on the words written in front of her. Out of the corner of her vision, she saw her phone go black.
She glanced at it. Gave it a little shake. Huh, she thought, pressing the power button and watching it glow back to life. Weird. Thought I changed the screen time.
She shook her head, scrolling through the delivery app until she hit Taco Bell. She passed the menu off to Piper’s outstretched hands, sneakily dipping out of the way when she tried to stroke her fingers on the grab.
Halfway through her order, the phone went black again. “Are you fucking shitting me?” she muttered. She squeezed the power button.
It didn’t turn on.
What the-
“Ann?” Piper called out. She glanced up to where she was staring. The TV was glitching, a mass of empty static on the screen. “Is it broken?” Annabeth stepped closer, Piper not following. ”This is how white people die, Annabeth!”
“Oh, don’t be ridiculous.” Annabeth glanced behind the TV. “It’s probably just a wire or something.”
“Of course you would say that,” Piper hissed, grabbing the metallic bat from her baseball kit stored by the front door. Bat balanced in front of her, she pushed herself up the wall. “Between me and you, I’ll probably die first. You get to be the final girl.”
“If I’m gonna be the final girl, it’ll be because I’m smart enough not to get outwitted by a demon,” Annabeth grunted, reaching behind the TV and fiddling with the wires. She checked the TV, seeing empty static. “Not because of racism.”
“It always comes down to racism,” Piper muttered.
Annabeth frowned, stepping out from the side. She picked up the remote and tried to change the channel but the static didn’t vanish. “Fucking hell,” she grumbled. “Must be the cable box.”
“Demon!” Piper protested. “Did you fuck with one of my sigils? I swear to the gods, Beth, if you fucked with one of my sigils-”
“Why would I fuck with one of your sigils, Pipes?” Annabeth yanked out the cable box and fiddled with the wires but it was fine. She frowned and turned the box off. The static didn’t vanish. She turned the TV off. The red light vanished but the static remained. “Hmm. Well, now I’m stumped.”
“Check on my sigils!”
She groaned. “If I knew letting you live with me would make a puppet like this, I wouldn’t have agreed,” she muttered, pushing up from her knees and checking the hidden painter’s tape Piper had pressed along the edge of the wall. It took a few seconds for her to spark her own second vision to see the hidden tape and it’s resulting intricately designed sigils.
“I don’t know why you didn’t have your own! Who lives without protection like that?” Piper protested.
Her knees burned as she crawled along the floor but she still huffed out, “People who don’t have werewolf friends?”
“Hahaha.”
“I’m only kidding a little bit.” She grunted as she came to the doorway splitting the living room from the hallway. “I don’t fuck with anything or anyone that doesn’t belong to our Lady Reyna and/or isn’t human. That keeps me pretty safe.”
“Grover isn’t human.”
“Grover doesn’t count,” Annabeth muttered. She turned to crawl around the doorway when her vision split. Ugh. Another reason why she couldn’t bother with sigil. Hiding them from the eyes of others meant split vision and she was never good at managing second sight.
Her beliefs stemmed from strength, confidence, strategy.
There wasn’t that much magic, if any, she bothered to follow. Second sight wasn’t even necessary until she met Piper.
“What’s wrong?”
“Vision split,” she muttered. “Gimme a second.”
Seeming slightly more relaxed that the sigils in the area where the main issues were happening weren’t snapped, Piper nodded. Then someone knocked on the door. “Oh, fuck no.”
“Relax,” Annabeth huffed, standing up.
Piper swung her bat at her, freezing a foot away. “If you try to open that door, I will kill you.”
“If I learn how to apply sigils, will you learn how to use a proper weapon?” Annabeth pushed the bat out of her face. “Reyna cannot be looking down on you with approval for this.”
“She looks down on me with hella approval,” Piper said. “And fuck off from the door.”
Annabeth rose her arms over her head and backed up. “Fine, fine, fine.”
She watched with slight trepidation as Piper approached the front door, peaking through the peephole. Her stance tightened and she backed up.
“What is it?”
“Nothing,” Piper hissed through gritted teeth. “Just an empty hallway. Don’t fucking like that.” She turned out, her eyes glowing faintly with second sight before she pushed her bat into Annabeth’s hands and dropped to her knees, furiously checking on the sigils taped around the apartment.
In her absence, Annabeth glanced back at the static TV. Hmm.
Balancing the bat over her shoulder, she stepped up to it once more, fishing her phone from her pocket. It was still black. She glanced between the TV and the phone, frowning. She didn’t pocket her phone but walked into the kitchen, turning on the microwave. It counted down from thirty, steady, until it reached twenty-five.
Then it glitched, numbers spiralling. The glow inside didn’t stop but changed from it’s usual bright orange spin to an unearthly red.
Grover passed through her mind, his weird brown aura.
Her mother didn’t use sigils anywhere but the bedrooms, citing privacy. The first time he’d tried to pass through, her light turned a dark brown, casting a creepy glow, before Annabeth had the chance to give him the code.
Red...
Red could be many things. The sun, war, fire. She pressed her fingers to the microwave’s buttons, reverting Aethin code to Arabic numerals. As soon as she hit nine, the final number, the microwave began to count down again. Her phone glowed back to life, the delivery app peering back at her.
As she turned, she called out, “Hey, Pipes, it’s not a demon, I think it was just-” She jerked to a frozen stop.
Lady Reyna stared down at her, all six foot five glory and righteousness. “A god?” she asked. Her smile was not kind or threatening - a blank neutrality that had Annabeth shivering, feeling all too small and all too much like a slice of prey. “You’d be right.”
“Ann, why did you stop-” Piper’s voice faltered before she weakly finished, “-talking.”
“I believe she was caught off guard,” Lady Reyna said, stepping to the side. She gestured loosely to Annabeth’s side and Piper slid right into the spot. “I have something I’d like to discuss.”
“I told her not to get summer’s kiss,” Annabeth said. Her mouth was dry as hell.
“It smelled nice,” Piper whispered.
Lady Reyna frowned then snorted. “No, no, this isn’t about my candle. This about my friend. Nico. Lord of the night skies, prince of death.”
“Oh.” Seriously? Was he seriously choosing between their weirdly obsessive friends? “Okay.”
She pushed her hand through her hair, muscles rippling under her tunic. Annabeth resisted the urge to reach out and touch, gently slapping away Piper’s hand as she tried to so.
“I find their obsession... concerning but easy enough to ignore. But now they’ve roped you, my lovely followers-” Annabeth’s knees smacked together. “-into their strange brigade. I find that a personal affront. If they’re so willing to court a god-” Her tone darkened, eyes glowing whiter than bone. “-they should be doing so of their own merit. Proving themselves worthy of such a man.”
Annabeth tried to respond but her breath caught out in her throat, releasing no words, just broken sounds.
Lady Reyna sighed. “I would appreciate you passing on my message. Hazel is... reluctant to agree with me. What with her own interest in one of your... obsessive friends. Talking with my own followers, however, is never out of the question.”
“Of course,” Piper breathed. “I didn’t like helping Jason anyway.”
Liar. “Yeah.” Annabeth coughed. “Same. With- with- Percy.”
Lady Reyna clasped her hands. “Wonderful then.” She stepped back. “I hope you’ll heed my words about your involvement in thier conquest. I’d rather this not be the reason for my next visit.”
She was gone before either of them could say a word.
Next visit. Annabeth stared at the spot she’d been standing. NEXT VISIT?
“Did... Did she just say she was coming back?” Piper whispered.
“Uh huh.”
“Do you think... do you think she meant, like... temple visit? Like... normal?”
“Uh uh.”
“Oh.” Piper sounded faint. “We’re gonna have to deep clean.”
Annabeth covered her face with her hands and sank down to the floor in a slightly tense squat. “Uh huh.”
“Might as well get a new mattress,” Piper muttered. “Since I’m gonna fuck her.”
Annabeth groaned. “Piper!”
“You can join us! That was totally expected for you to do, Annie!”
Annabeth pulled her hands from her face and looked up at her girlfriend. “Well...” She faltered. Lady Reyna’s muscles rippling came back to view. Her stacked biceps. “Good.”
