The other day, I was at a physical therapy session (for my shoulder, not my ankle, though I am in PT for my ankle as well) and chatting with another patient and the physical therapist treating us.
The other patient was feeling bummed about his slow progress, so I told him about how, despite my most recent ankle injury being a grade 1 sprain back in October and there being no visible damage from the outside, I'm still in physical therapy for it. And I will continue to be in PT for quite some time. My ankle is messed up in a complex way that requires me to be very gradual in increasing my physical therapy and very careful about not overexerting it.
The reason it's so messed up goes back to spraining it initially nine years ago. I didn't see a doctor right away (I was at college and decided I didn't have time for that) and when I did see one, I didn't get the appropriate treatment for it. My doctor didn't even mention PT, despite my injury being so bad she was worried I broke my ankle. When I sprained it again almost as horribly two months later, she still didn't send me to PT.
And the physical therapist just nodded at me and said that's very common for ankle injuries. People don't get the appropriate treatment and suffer needlessly for years.
So here's my PSA: If you sprain your ankle, see a doctor. Make sure to check whether physical therapy would be beneficial for you; it almost always is for an ankle sprain. If you are having pain, swelling, bruising, or some combination of the three a month after your injury, make a fuss at the doctor's office if they tell you to continue doing the RICE method and send you on your merry way.
I've been struggling and suffering for nine years. A third of my life. Ankle injuries are treatable. You can recover well! But you need to seek medical help early and get the right treatment.
Don't be like me.
#my most recent ankle injury was a grade 1 sprain on the outside of my ankle#yet the MRI back in January showed two grade 2 sprains. one on both side.#it's crazy difficult to sprain the inside of your ankle and I'm still not sure how it happened#I just sort of chalk it up to my ankle having serious issues that weren't addressed until LAST YEAR#this year in January was my first ankle MRI!!! despite YEARS of ankle weakness and pain#and seriously I cannot convey how bad my first two sprains were#seriously do not be like me. get treatment fast. avoid the stuff I've been struggling with.#speechie sucks at health#speecher speaks

Achilles tendonitis: a lasting inflammation !
Achilles tendonitis is an inflammation of the Achilles tendon, the largest tendon in your body. It connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. This inflammation is often caused by overuse of the tendon, resulting in pain and stiffness in the heel.
Causes of Achilles tendonitis
- Overload: A sudden increase in physical activity, especially in sportspeople, can put excessive strain on the tendon.
- Poor footwear: Unsuitable, worn or high-heeled shoes can increase pressure on the tendon.
- Poor posture: Problems with posture, such as flat feet or high arches, can alter the distribution of forces on the Achilles tendon.
- Age: Middle-aged people are more likely to suffer from this condition due to natural wear and tear of the tendon.
Symptoms
- Pain: Pain at the back of the heel, which usually worsens with physical activity and relieves with rest.
- Stiffness: A feeling of stiffness, especially when waking up in the morning.
- Swelling: Sometimes a slight swelling may be visible or palpable in the tendon.
Treatment
Treatment for Achilles tendonitis depends on the severity of the inflammation. It may include :
- Rest: It is important to reduce or stop activities that cause pain.
- Ice: Apply ice to the painful area several times a day.
- Medication: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can help reduce pain and inflammation.
- Orthotics: Orthopaedic insoles can help to distribute the pressure on the foot and relieve the tendon.
- Physiotherapy: Specific exercises can strengthen the tendon and improve its flexibility.
- Shock waves: This technique can help stimulate tendon healing.
- Corticosteroid injections: In the most severe cases, a corticosteroid injection may be considered to reduce inflammation.
Prevention
- Warming up: Before any physical activity, it's important to warm up properly to prepare the muscles and tendons.
- Stretching: Regular stretching of the calves can help prevent Achilles tendonitis.
- Appropriate footwear: Choosing the right shoes for your physical activity is essential.
- Gradual increase in physical activity: Avoid increasing the intensity or duration of your exercise too quickly.
If you are suffering from heel pain, it is important to consult a healthcare professional for a precise diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Understanding Foot and Ankle Pain: Causes, Treatments, and Exercises for Relief
Foot and ankle pain can significantly impact your daily life, limiting mobility and causing discomfort with every step. Whether it's a sharp pain from an injury or a persistent ache that worsens with time, understanding the underlying causes and finding the right treatment is crucial for regaining your comfort and mobility.
Common Causes of Foot and Ankle Pain
Injuries:
Sprains and Strains: Ankle sprains are among the most common injuries, often resulting from twisting or rolling your ankle. Strains, on the other hand, involve overstretching or tearing muscles and tendons.
Fractures: Broken bones in the foot or ankle can cause intense pain and swelling. Fractures often require immediate medical attention.
Achilles Tendonitis: Overuse or sudden stress on the Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscles to the heel bone, can cause inflammation and pain at the back of the ankle.
Arthritis:
Osteoarthritis: This degenerative joint disease wears down the cartilage in the foot and ankle, leading to stiffness, swelling, and pain, especially with age.
Rheumatoid Arthritis: An autoimmune condition that can affect multiple joints, including the ankles, causing chronic pain and deformity.
Plantar Fasciitis:
One of the most common causes of heel pain, plantar fasciitis occurs when the fascia connecting your heel bone to your toes becomes inflamed and thickened, often due to overuse or poor footwear.
Bursitis:
Inflammation of the bursae (small sacs of fluid that cushion the bones, tendons, and muscles near the joints) can cause pain in the heel and ankle, often due to repetitive motion or prolonged pressure.
Best Treatments for Ankle Pain
Treating foot and ankle pain requires a comprehensive approach tailored to the specific cause of your discomfort. At Neuron Pain & Spine Clinic, we offer various treatments designed to provide effective relief and promote long-term healing.
Physical Therapy:
Customized physical therapy programs can help strengthen the muscles around the ankle, improve flexibility, and reduce pain. Therapists use targeted exercises to enhance stability and prevent future injuries.
Medication:
Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help manage mild to moderate pain. In some cases, your doctor may prescribe stronger medications or anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce swelling.
Orthotics:
Custom orthotic devices, such as shoe inserts or ankle braces, can provide support and alleviate pain by correcting foot and ankle alignment.
Injections:
Corticosteroid injections can reduce inflammation and provide temporary to long-term relief for conditions like arthritis or tendonitis. This treatment is often used when other methods haven’t provided adequate relief. Another therapy called platelet rich plasma (PRP) which is obtained from patients’ own blood is used to treat many heel pain conditions.
Surgical Options:
In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to repair fractures, correct deformities, or replace damaged joints. Our expert surgeons at Neuron Pain & Spine Clinic can discuss the best surgical options based on your specific condition.
Ankle Pain Exercises for Relief
Incorporating exercises into your daily routine can help alleviate foot and ankle pain, improve mobility, and prevent future injuries. Here are some recommended exercises:
Ankle Circles:
Sit or lie down with your leg extended. Slowly rotate your ankle in a circular motion, first clockwise, then counterclockwise. This exercise improves flexibility and strengthens the muscles around the ankle.
Toe Raises:
Stand with your feet flat on the ground. Slowly raise your toes, keeping your heels on the floor. Hold for a few seconds, then lower your toes back down. This exercise strengthens the arch and helps with conditions like plantar fasciitis.
Calf Stretch:
Stand facing a wall with one foot in front of the other. Keep your back leg straight and your heel on the ground while bending your front knee. Hold the stretch for 15-30 seconds and switch legs. This stretch targets the Achilles tendon and calf muscles.
Heel Raises:
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Slowly raise your heels off the ground, balancing on your toes. Hold for a few seconds, then lower your heels. This exercise strengthens the calf muscles and improves ankle stability.
