Got somethin' to say this #AniMonday ?
Another concept test for Foster/Superfan while at Blue Sky studios . We were playing around with a magical race whose magic was all illusion based. They were flashy and over the top, and their costumes/clothes would constantly change and shift depending on their mood/feelings/attitude. I thought the Chris Tucker from Fifth Element bit would be perfect for the test. Tried to get some Genie from Aladdin energy in there as well. Had a lot of fun with this one!

Anime Spotlight #42: Tsukimichi - Moonlit Fantasy
Happy AniMonday, Ticketholders!
I'm conflicted about today's review because I'm glad I didn't miss out on Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy...but after spending June with Full Moon Features and ending July with Moonfall, I want to be done with that big ball of Endless Vearth in the sky that wiped out Termina and gave a whiny high school girl magic powers.
Yes, I did just reference One Piece, Majora's Mask, and Sailor Moon back to back....
So yeah, Tsukimichi is isekai with a twist, a rich world, fun characters, spectacular fights, solid tonal balance, and banger intro music. I can't wait for Season Three!
Enjoy!

Dear nimoners, I hope you're aware of the fact that Ambrosius in the early concept of the movie was supposed to give that glam rock/rock'n'roll feel (I don't think I'll be able to find the post but I hope you know what I'm talking about), so!!!
I present to you!!!
The song which imo suits this early version SO WELL
youtube
First off, it OOZES with his vibe. Like YEAH he WILL do anything for love (but he won't do that)
Second off, this paragraph explains everything perfectly:

Yeah honestly it was all a trap for you guys to check out this song bc it's so cool and Ambrosius-Goldenloin-graphic-novel-core

Keep in sync this #AniMonday !
This was an early Nimona concept I was proposing where the guards would move in sync with each other, while visually sticking to a design that leaned heavily on vertical, horizontal, and 45° angles.

I got a taker so here we go, we're going back in time (mumble mumble) number of years to when I was a little bitty tween baby exploring the internet for the first time. I'm going to go into excruciating detail on this story so bear with me, okay?
So, the first piece of context you need to know about is that when I was in middle school (specifically seventh grade), my school was involved in an experimental program that involved giving every student a personal laptop that was linked into the school's network, to see if it would help students with schoolwork and research. And if you're thinking "boy that's a lot of computers" you're right, but also remember that my graduating class was all of 78 people and we were considered a "big" class. While classes at that end are smaller than in middle school, it was still >3oo, which I can assume is why our school was involved. They certainly weren't going to involve Dublin in this, where that is usually the size of their graduating classes alone.
(A side note: when this program was announced, we had a big assembly and were allowed to ask questions. One kid asked if we were allowed to take them with us if our family went out of town, and our principal remarked that they were for schoolwork and "you wouldn't take your textbooks on vacation with you, would you?", which just goes to show that while my principal was actually a really chill guy and did a pretty good job of connecting with his students, he definitely did not understand the hold that computers would come to have over us. But that's another story.)
Anyway, the point is, at the ripe old age of 12, I was given my own personal laptop, which my parents had no involvement in. It was a pain in the neck to carry and it was through the school and wifi wasn't really a thing at the time so I couldn't really surf the web at home, but it was still my first taste of complete freedom to explore my interests. And my interest at the time... was anime.
See, this was also during that time period when anime was hitting BIG in America. I had been an anime fan for years at this point, having been exposed to it through FoxKids' Animonday and Anime Afternoon blocks, where I discovered both Monster Rancher and Digimon in my attempts to just fucking watch Pokemon (I have conflicting memories about these attempts; either it only came on in the morning when I was getting ready for school, or I didn't have the channel it came on- it's possible it's both and I only had the channel it was syndicated on, because 7:oo in the morning seems a very strange time to air new episodes of the most popular show in America at the time).
In any case, I had been a fan of anime for years and Digimon owned my entire tiny gay ass, so naturally the second I was given unlimited and unsupervised access to the internet I immediately began looking for anime stuff. Which is how I found Lelola.net, a website I would spend inordinate amounts of time on and probably had every page memorized. A lot of anime that I've never watched but know a lot about are because Pan talked about them on her site, and there are anime on my to-watch list to this day because of that site.
But that's not where this story goes. I didn't discover fanfiction through Lelola.
What I did discover through Lelola was several affiliated websites- this was back in the day when everyone linked their websites on each other's websites, so when you'd gotten your fill of content on one site you could just go to that little affiliates sidebar or the links page and then go find another website to get your fix on.
I spent my time surfing these websites, but apart from Lelola there were none I spent as much time on as Anime Admirers. Pan and Julie indirectly became my guides into the world of not just anime but of being an otaku, but being a fan of anime. I couldn't watch most of them because we had basic cable, but I could read about the updates and read fan discussions and- as I would soon discover- fanfiction.
So, I was exploring Anime Insiders, and I discovered a part of the menu that said "fanworks". Sometimes the section would be so big it would be divided into "fanfiction" and "fanart", two whole categories. I had no idea what these things were. What in the world did these links imply?
(You're probably thinking "it seems rather obvious" but please recall, 1, I was twelve, possibly eleven, 2, this was my first foray into the world of fandom, and 3, I was kinda stupid at that age.)
Anyway, I went into the Digimon fanfiction section and clicked on the first link, and that was how I discovered fanfiction! I do not remember 99% of the fic, BUT! If you've ever noticed me using the phrase "put chin in hand and think", guess where I got it from?
Tumblr media
(By the way, that screenshot is a spoiler for where this post is going ;)
Anyway, along with Digimon, my tiny gay ass was also deeply invested in Medabots at the time- in fact my first attempt at writing fanfic would end up being Medabots fiction, about my own self-insert, The Black Cat Medafighter, real identity Andie Hunter, who was an old friend of Henry's and in her secret identity was a rival thief to the Phantom Renegade.
After reading in the Digimon section with fascination, I moved over to the Medabots fanfiction to see what there was there. And I found a fic called Robo Romance by a writer using the handle Jedi_And. This fanfic was part of a very long series, all hosted on Anime Admirers, about the discovery that Medabots could become pregnant and give live birth.
...yeah when I say nothing fandom can produce has the ability to shock me this is why. This fic lives rent free in my head two decades after my discovery of it. The fic was, I suspect, no masterpiece, but I was twelve and it gave me new adventures with these characters I liked so much, and as a bonus it was just raunchy enough to feel thrilling to read while being nowhere near raunchy enough to even merit the word.
But the reason this fanfic is notable isn't because it killed my ability to be surprised by fandom, or because it was like the second or third foray I'd made into reading fanfiction, but because when I had finished reading the entirety of the Robo Romance series, I decided to take one of the 8oo shiny new email addresses I had signed up for (...look, it was a different time, okay?) and reached out to Jedi_And to tell him that I had enjoyed his work.
This proved fruitful, and Andrew and I ended up corresponding via email for a few weeks after that. If memory serves, he told me he was Canadian and lived somewhere with a lot of forest, and he told me about Tatu, a lesbian girlband from Russia that would end up being one of the first instances of my homophobic upbringing being challenged and the first time it was explicitly so in my mind, but that's another story for another day.
Anyway, I think about Andrew all the time, or at least fairly frequently- every few months I'll pause and remember that year I spent on Lelola and Anime Insiders and the time I spent corresponding with Andrew. I doubt he knows that he was my first fandom friendship, and I very much doubt he'd remember me, but I remember him, and I wonder how he's doing, and if he ever got better at writing, because what very little I can recall of Robo Romance is about what you'd expect from what I can only assume was a teenager in 2oo1.
But that's not where this story ends! Because just now I was reminded of the Wayback Machine and recalled that the last time I tried to nostalgically visit Lelola Pan had taken down the anime website and turned it into her cosplay directory, so I decided to see if Lelola was on the Wayback machine. And then I realized that if Lelola was there, I could probably use it to seek out that other website, whose name was a bit more generic and thus harder to remember.
And you know what? I found both of them.
But more importantly... once I was on Admirers... I found A Chance Worth Taking and Robo Romance (note robo romance link takes you to the anime fanworks page because they're not, to my knowledge, linked within each other).
I'm not going to read them. I'm going to let them stay pristine in my memory, obscured by all of the dust of nostalgia. But it's nice to know they're there, and look at the links and think about little me being nervous about reaching out but knowing that after all that, I sort of had to-
And that's the story of how I discovered fanfiction and made my first fandom friend :)
I wonder what Andrew is up to these days...?
So who wants to hear about the very first fanfic I ever read?
eta: And consequently the first friend I ever made through online fandom :)

Anime Spotlight #25: The Apothecary Diaries
One week to Valentine's Day, Ticketholders!
The February Anime Spotlights begin here with The Apothecary Diaries, one of several selections that are turning out to have less to do with romance than expected.
But I'm loving the series, so hopefully that counts?
Enjoy the Month Of Love!
