x
You wake up to an empty bed. What did you expect? That he’d stay? Bucky isn’t known to spend the night after fucking you but you keep wishing he would. You run your hand down his side of the bed and feel the cool sheets. He must have left early in the morning so that your sister wouldn’t see him.
It’s not like she hates him but she hates the idea of you being with any one of her “coworkers”. Natasha isn’t shy when it comes to relationships and often encourages you to go out and have fun with different men. She loves dating even if she doesn’t show it, and you love telling her about all the dates you get to go on. The issue is that she doesn’t want you dating anyone she knows. She knows the baggage that comes with the men she knows and doesn’t want you mixed up with it.
You went to University to get a degree as a voice actor. You’ve gotten gigs across the country but ultimately settled in New York where you got a job working on a popular animated television series. You’re already in your third season and have no plans of stopping anytime soon. Natasha loves to tell you how normal you are and how different you are compared to the shit she goes through every day.
You’re not a spy and you have no desire to be a spy. You’re not Natasha’s biological sister because you came into her life well after she got done with the Red Room training. She was on a mission to kill your father for all the bad shit he has been doing. You hated the man and had always wanted to leave. However, your mother died at birth and you were a minor at the time. He always hid his shady shit which is why he didn’t get convicted for anything.
She saved you and she adopted you a couple of years later. You don’t blame her for your father’s death even if she did pull the trigger. He’s a bad man who is rotting in Hell and you’re better off for it. Now, you have a successful job and are in love with the infamous Winter Soldier. Only he doesn’t know it and if he does, he doesn’t do anything about it.
You two met when Natasha was having a party at the Avengers Compound. She didn’t want you to go but you insisted that with her by your side, you’ll be fine. It’s not like the Avengers are going to pick a fight with you or anything. Even Bruce had his alter ego under control, so she relented and let you come.
Her world is and was much different than yours. She told stories of how she went to space, how she kicked someone’s ass, and how she infiltrated an organization. All you have to show for is the work you’ve done for entertainment. You’re not nearly as special as any of them but Bucky makes you feel like you are.
He kept to himself in the corner of the room drinking something that wasn’t alcohol when you approached him.
“Hi. Do you mind if I join you?”
“No, go ahead,” he clears his throat.
“I’m Y/N. I’m Natasha’s sister. Adopted sister, actually, but she feels like a real one to me. What’s your name?”
“You seriously don’t know who I am?” he chuckles.
“I know who you are but I’d thought I’d be polite and let you introduce yourself instead of assuming I know everything about you.”
“Right,” he nods. “I’m Bucky.”
“It’s nice to meet you, Bucky.”
You two fell into conversation that lasted well past the party. Natasha had a secret thing for Steve and didn’t mind staying over as long as you were safe and okay with staying. You left that night with thoughts of Bucky and when the next time you were going to see him, but Natasha didn’t share your enthusiasm.
“Listen, I don’t want to tell you what to do but I don’t want you seeing Bucky.”
“Funny. That sounds exactly like you telling me what to do,” you scoff.
“I mean it, Y/N. Bucky is a good guy now but he wasn’t always like this. He’s not all the way back yet and I don’t want you getting hurt. With any of them. They have too much baggage and you don’t need something like that in your life.”
You look out the window in annoyance.
“I just spent the last two hours talking to a guy who made me feel like I was the only woman in the world. I’m not saying I want to marry the guy but I felt something that I haven’t felt with any of the guys I’ve dated.”
“I knew bringing you to that party was a bad idea,” she scoffs. “You’re not seeing Bucky. End of story.”
“I am an adult, Nat. Let me make my own decisions. Let me decide if he’s worth the heartbreak.”
“He will do more than break your heart. He will break you. He didn’t get his name for nothing. His body count is well into the hundreds if not thousands. I am not worried about him breaking your heart. I’m worried about him killing you. I mean it, Y/N. Stay away from that one.”
You tried, God knows you tried, but there is something about Bucky that you couldn’t stay away from. You formed friendships with Wanda and Thor which gave you an excuse of going to the compound where you knew Bucky was living. Wanda caught on pretty quickly at what you were trying to do since she can read minds and all that, and she agreed to keep your affair with Bucky from your sister.
You’re not trying to hurt Natasha but you fell for Bucky and fell for him hard. He just never stays the night like you hope he does.
You get out of bed and walk to the bathroom where you hear the shower going. Natasha must be in there. You slip in and knock on the door to let her know that you’re inside the bathroom with her.
“Hey, Nat, I’m just going to brush my teeth. I’ll be out shortly.”
You slip in, close the door behind you, and walk over to the sink.
“I’m not Nat.”
You tense when you hear Bucky’s deep voice but then smile when you realize he slept the night in your bed. The curtain slides to the side just enough for him to peek his head out of it, and you turn to face him.
“I thought you left last night.”
“Nope. I wanted to stay the night with you. Is that okay?”
“It’s more than okay.”
He closes the curtain again and resumes cleaning himself.
“Got any plans today?”
You’re about to answer when you hear the front door slam open and shut. Natasha is the only one who has a key so she must be back. If she found out Bucky has not only been dating you but secretly fucking you, she’d have a heart attack and probably kill him.
“Y/N? Are you in there?” The bathroom door shakes and you do the first thing that comes to mind. You quickly hop in the shower, fully clothed, and look at Bucky who smirks. The door opens and Nat walks in. “Y/N?”
“I’m in the shower!” Bucky’s mouth opens so you place your hand over it so he understands he needs to be quiet. “What do you want?”
“Listen, Steve and some of the guys are having a cookout at Clint’s farm. I was wondering if you wanted to come with me.”
“Really? You’ll let me go?”
“I feel bad and I shouldn’t keep you away from your friends.”
“Is Bucky going to be there?”
Bucky nods and looks at you with mischievous eyes.
“Yeah.”
“Then I’ll go.”
“I invited you because Wanda and Thor will be there. They’re your friends.”
“I know.”
“Y/N…”
“It’s fine, Nat. I’ll hang with them.”
“Okay. We leave in an hour.”
She leaves the bathroom and you remove your hand from Bucky’s mouth knowing you didn’t need it to be there. He knows Natasha’s opinion of him and how she wouldn’t approve of you two dating. He just wanted to feel your hands on him if he’s being honest.
“Great, now I’m all wet. Look what you did.”
“I like it when you’re wet,” he smirks.
You shove his shoulder and scoff playfully but he grabs you and pulls you into him. He slides his hands into your hair and kisses you. He must forget the situation you’re in because you can feel his growing arousal on your stomach.
“No, Bucky, we should stop. I will not be tempted into shower sex again. Remember what happened last time?”
“Damn, my arm malfunctions one time and you’re triggered.”
“Can I trust you to keep your hands to yourself at this cookout?”
“No,” he chuckles. “It’s gonna be hard not to. Now I’m picturing you wet.”
“Hurry up and leave before she finds you in here. I’d rather not know what a fight between Black Widow and the Winter Soldier looks like.”
You slip out of the shower and back to your room without your sister noticing. While you’d like your relationship to be out in the open, sneaking around is just too much damn fun.

Our non-marine heroine Karleeen McQueen
You know what, you already know lots of stuff about Ahti II, I’m now going to tell you about Karleeen the spidergirl, Ahti’s best friend and the protagonist of a story I’m writing! A quick information sheet:
Tumblr media
(+ Art reference)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Karleeen (with three e’s)… well, who doesn’t know about Karleeen! Probably not by looks, but you could read all about her on the papers some years back. It’s been a while, you'd hardly recognise her if you saw her now! Especially among the other jolly beachgoers, joggers, shoppers and summertime tourists; Karleeen lives in Naantali after all, with her single father on the coast of southwest Finland. In the summer it's busy, in the winter it's very quiet, all year round it's a very appropriate place for Karleeen, she thinks.
Now in her mid-teens (the Sirpaverse “starting point” is 2021), Karleeen is a most open and jolly girl! She loves socialising and chats with just about anybody she has a chance to interact with for more than five minutes. She’s always planning outings and looking to spend time with her best friends, too! She enjoys being silly, making wordplay and coming up with puns with ridiculous set-ups. Karleeen is a sensitive soul, she feels all of her emotions very strongly and shows them strongly, too. She sometimes has trouble regulating her emotional reactions and has a tendency to spiral. It's very difficult for Karleeen to lie, her feelings will be very clear from her facial expressions and body language no matter how hard she may pretend to feel otherwise. Not that she'd even lie! It would make her feel too bad.
Karleeen has loved nothing more her whole life than making "thingamajigs" — you know, machines, things that move, little inventions! It's so fascinating to her, how pieces that are little more than scrap on their own weave together into intricate creations that are far more than the sum of their parts. When she was a young kid she'd make things out of twigs and rocks and rope, but in her teens she's now moved onto more sophisticated methods, legos and actual robot-building sets. She's also dipping her toes into coding, so far it seems fun and it offers an additional medium for making things (only digitally this time). Karleeen would love to study mechanical engineering when she's old enough to go to a university, but it'll be a while until then! Besides for robotics Karleeen enjoys hiking in the outdoors, climbing trees, basking, collecting fun and/or useless trinkets of various kinds and strawberry-themed items, playing platformers and action-adventure games and doodling.
Karleeen’s a smart girl, but she struggles a lot with languages. Or, well, don’t let me entirely misrepresent her: she does have the achievement of knowing some ASL signs. Still, Finnish is the only language she speaks fluently and it’s her own mother tongue! She can’t quite get anything else stuck to her brain, speaking Swedish or Surish or even simple English feels like a chore. Like stated above Karleeen’s body language is very clear, one of the more common actions Karleeen does when she’s nervous, scared or sad is holding her hands and arms close to her chest.
Karleeen's favourite genre of music is classical, but she can't listen to it casually because it makes her very emotional. She likes pop, rock and soundtracks when it comes to just playing music in the car or with friends. Her favourite animals are elephants, and her favourite fish is the electric eel. Her favourite meal is minute beef steak with seasoned butter and chanterelles, but her actual favorite singular food item in general and favourite snack is wild strawberries. Her favourite drink is tap water. Her favourite flower is fireweed.
(Nowhere else to really mention this but Karleeen is also asexual and biromantic, it took a long while for her to figure out because her relationship with having human connections is rather complicated and unusual but she’s comfortable in that identity and doesn’t really overthink it, she has a lot of love in her heart for so many things so it’s only natural she would have a lot of love for many people too, she thinks)

Do you think The Great Arthurian Movie To Rule Them All will ever be made? I know many think that it's Excalibur but we do really need for this century a movie (or perhaps a 2/3 movie saga, but no more) that covers Arthur and his world from his dark begetting at Tintagel to his last travel to Morgan's realm Avalon.
Ohh how I would love it. Unfortunately, I do not think so. I AM SORRY THIS IS GOING TO BE SO LONG
It looks like the movie industry in general is not doing so good, and I do not see them investing in a movie saga on King Arthur after the past flops. I do maybe have more hopes for smaller movies (smaller in scope/plot) like "The Green Knight", so nothing that comprehensive but maybe themes used here and there.
But yeah, I feel like it could only happens if/when we first have a very big success now. Merlin BBC was very successful I feel and it kind of gave rise to a bunch of movies and attempts, but after Camelot Starz, Cursed, the Winter King, the 2017 Guy Ritchie movie - it looks like it is failure after failure.
It is a pretty harsh space nowadays. People have been "trained out" from going to the movies during the main years of the pandemic, with studios sending their movies to digital very early (and sometimes directly). And old small tv-trashy movies are in such small number, because the competition is so high - you cannot throw it on some tv channel and force people to watch it because now people choose. Movies, shows, videogames - it is harsh out there.
Regarding tv shows, I have a bit more trust, but the streaming model also killed the old build up. Now it is one season or you get the axe, and with the competition it has to be a very good show or a very big name attached to it, or someone who insists on insuring that they will have multiple seasons (thank you "The Dragon Prince: Mystery of Aaravos", I had no doubt it would have been axed on s2 without an agreement).
I do have small hopes for tv series and maybe a new Camelot musical movie still. Maybe my hopes are silly, but if Wicked is a success it would be another in a series of movie musicals that were successful or well received. And regarding tv show, if there is a popular enough novel or series of novel in the future maybe we will have one. They really dropped the ball with the Winter King.
BTW, I just wanted to say, these last few years are a on the side of the less-arthurian-media (movies and shows) years. These are the last arthurian movies, all from 2021-2020:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We have three moves in the Fate series, which is the one successful arthurian franchise, alongside Kaamelott movie (another successful arthurian franchise), then we have two animated movies that are just arthurian-themed, then "Arthur and Merlin" which is from a smaller studio, and finally "The Green Knight" which is the one big studio movie there and it was also a success (it made a few million more than what it spent).
2022-2024 no arthurian movies.
If we look from the 60s till now we usually have at least a movie a year with sometimes a year being skipped. The other longer time was 1985-1987 where we had no movies, so we only have these two gaps.
For series, I have more hopes. I actually also hope for a full arthurian anime too. We had a lot of arthurian popular stuff from Japan: Nanatsu no Taizai, the whole Fate franchise which has multiple movies and series, plus there have been two arthurian musicals in the past few years.
So who knows! Maybe the next big arthurian "full on Arthur story" might end up being an expanded Camelot musical movie, or an anime!

Happy Portfolio Day!!
It's 2025, which mean this is the first PFD of the year. The last few years I didn't bother to post anything here under the impression that "professionals don't use tumblr" but I'm tired of thinking that way and I'm tired of feeling confined to spaces that simply haven't worked in the past. Today I'm sharing some fanart-- mostly fanart-- so you can all get a feel for my skillset! One thing I know I need to get better at, is building up trust with an audience/fans of my work. In order to do that, I have to show the work I've been doing!
In 2024, I made an effort to take myself seriously. Regain my confidence in my work, and attempt to fill the void left by the rejection and disappointment of our industry atm. I graduated college in 2021 and have been hunting for a job since. Clearly I haven't gotten anything back yet. But I'm improving every day and making moves to be better than I was the year before.
More work under the break!!
My animation reel:
youtube
Give Stars Burn Out a try if you like dark fantasy, adventure, world bending, and monsters. It's still in the earlier chapters but as the story pushes forward I have a lot in store that feels like a love letter to every creepy crawly ooky spooky 1980s dark fantasy film or book I've ever welcomed into my life:
Tumblr media
If you want dark and psychological, but aren't into comics. Maybe follow along with the development of my first solo-dev game, Before. It follows 19 year old Zelinda Gibbs, and the horrors she encounters inside AND outside of her own mind. I plan to have the game released in Decemeber of 2025. Granted things don't go all haywire on me!
Tumblr media
Or maybe you DO like comics and just want a quick read to make you feel good about the winter season. I wrote a 4-page comic called Winter Break. It follows Jaelynn and her friends as the welcome the season together! Soft, Sweet, and Simple. It's only $1 so please feel free to grab it!
Tumblr media
That's all folks, thank you so much if you read through this post or every shared it. I'm very grateful for the help!

Story and photographs by Ronan O’Connell
September 26, 2023
In the middle of a field in a lesser known part of Ireland is a large mound where sheep wander and graze freely.
Had they been in that same location centuries ago, these animals might have been stiff with terror, held aloft by chanting, costumed celebrants while being sacrificed to demonic spirits that were said to inhabit nearby Oweynagat cave.
This monumental mound lay at the heart of Rathcroghan, the hub of the ancient Irish kingdom of Connaught.
The former Iron Age center is now largely buried beneath the farmland of County Roscommon.
In 2021, Ireland applied for UNESCO World Heritage status for Rathcroghan (Rath-craw-hin). It remains on the organization's tentative list.
Tumblr media
Rooted in lore
Spread across more than two square miles of rich agricultural land, Rathcroghan encompasses 240 archaeological sites, dating back 5,500 years.
They include burial mounds, ring forts (settlement sites), standing stones, linear earthworks, an Iron Age ritual sanctuary — and Oweynagat, the so-called gate to hell.
More than 2,000 years ago, when Ireland’s communities seem to have worshipped nature and the land itself, it was here at Rathcroghan that the Irish New Year festival of Samhain (SOW-in) was born, says archaeologist and Rathcroghan expert Daniel Curley.
In the 1800s, the Samhain tradition was brought by Irish immigrants to the United States, where it morphed into the sugar overload that is American Halloween.
Dorothy Ann Bray, a retired associate professor at McGill University and an expert in Irish folklore, explains that pre-Christian Irish divided each year into summer and winter.
Within that framework were four festivities.
Imbolc, on February 1, was a festival that coincided with lambing season.
Bealtaine, on May 1, marked the end of winter and involved customs like washing one’s face in dew, plucking the first blooming flowers, and dancing around a decorated tree.
August 1 heralded Lughnasadh, a harvest festival dedicated to the god Lugh and presided over by Irish kings.
Then on October 31 came Samhain, when one pastoral year ended and another began.
Rathcroghan was not a town, as Connaught had no proper urban centers and consisted of scattered rural properties.
Instead, it was a royal settlement and a key venue for these festivals.
During Samhain, in particular, Rathcroghan was a hive of activity focused on its elevated temple, which was surrounded by burial grounds for the Connachta elite.
Those same privileged people may have lived at Rathcroghan. The remaining lower-class Connachta communities resided in dispersed farms and descended on the site only for festivals.
At those lively events they traded, feasted, exchanged gifts, played games, arranged marriages, and announced declarations of war or peace.
Festivalgoers also may have made ritual offerings, possibly directed to the spirits of Ireland’s otherworld.
That murky, subterranean dimension, also known as Tír na nÓg (Teer-na-nohg), was inhabited by Ireland’s immortals, as well as a myriad of beasts, demons, and monsters.
During Samhain, some of these creatures escaped via Oweynagat cave (pronounced “Oen-na-gat” and meaning “cave of the cats”).
“Samhain was when the invisible wall between the living world and the otherworld disappeared,” says Mike McCarthy, a Rathcroghan tour guide and researcher who has co-authored several publications on the site.
“A whole host of fearsome otherworldly beasts emerged to ravage the surrounding landscape and make it ready for winter.”
Thankful for the agricultural efforts of these spirits but wary of falling victim to their fury, the people protected themselves from physical harm by lighting ritual fires on hilltops and in fields.
They disguised themselves as fellow ghouls, McCarthy says, so as not to be dragged into the otherworld via the cave.
Despite these engaging legends — and the extensive archaeological site in which they dwell — one easily could drive past Rathcroghan and spot nothing but paddocks.
Inhabited for more than 10,000 years, Ireland is so dense with historical remains that many are either largely or entirely unnoticed.
Some are hidden beneath the ground, having been abandoned centuries ago and then slowly consumed by nature.
That includes Rathcroghan, which some experts say may be Europe’s largest unexcavated royal complex.
Not only has it never been dug up, but it also predates Ireland’s written history.
That means scientists must piece together its tale using non-invasive technology and artifacts found in its vicinity.
Tumblr media
While Irish people for centuries knew this site was home to Rathcroghan, it wasn’t until the 1990s that a team of Irish researchers used remote sensing technology to reveal its archaeological secrets beneath the ground.
“The beauty of the approach to date at Rathcroghan is that so much has been uncovered without the destruction that comes with excavating upstanding earthwork monuments,” Curley says.
“[Now] targeted excavation can be engaged with, which will answer our research questions while limiting the damage inherent with excavation.”
Becoming a UNESCO site
This policy of preserving Rathcroghan’s integrity and authenticity extends to tourism.
Despite its significance, Rathcroghan is one of Ireland’s less frequented attractions, drawing some 22,000 visitors a year compared with more than a million at the Cliffs of Moher.
That may not be the case had it long ago been heavily marketed as the “Birthplace of Halloween,” Curley says.
But there is no Halloween signage at Rathcroghan or in Tulsk, the nearest town.
Rathcroghan’s renown should soar, however, if Ireland is successful in its push to make it a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Irish Government has included Rathcroghan as part of the “Royal Sites of Ireland,” which is on its newest list of locations to be considered for prized World Heritage status.
The global exposure potentially offered by UNESCO branding would likely attract many more visitors to Rathcroghan.
But it seems unlikely this historic jewel will be re-packaged as a kitschy Halloween tourist attraction.
“If Rathcroghan got a UNESCO listing and that attracted more attention here that would be great, because it might result in more funding to look after the site,” Curley says.
“But we want sustainable tourism, not a rush of gimmicky Halloween tourism.”
Those travelers who do seek out Rathcroghan might have trouble finding Oweynagat cave.
Oweynagat is elusive — despite being the birthplace of Medb, perhaps the most famous queen in Irish history, 2,000 years ago.
Barely signposted, it’s hidden beneath trees in a paddock at the end of a one-way, dead-end farm track, about a thousand yards south of the much more accessible temple mound.
Visitors are free to hop a fence, walk through a field, and peer into the narrow passage of Oweynagat.
In Ireland’s Iron Age, such behavior would have been enormously risky during Samhain, when even wearing a ghastly disguise might not have spared the wrath of a malevolent creature.
Two millennia later, most costumed trick-or-treaters on Halloween won’t realize they’re mimicking a prehistoric tradition — one with much higher stakes than the pursuit of candy.

Excerpt from this story from the LA Times:
After years of debate, nearly two miles of fencing that prevented Point Reyes National Seashore tule elk from accessing water and competing for food with nearby cattle will be removed, the National Park Service announced Monday.
The 8-foot-high, 2.2-mile enclosure fence, which was decried as inhumane by animal rights activists but supported by cattle ranchers, will be removed along with all temporary water systems.
“We analyzed three alternatives and incorporated feedback from over 35,000 public comment letters gathered during three comment periods,” said Anne Altman, park superintendent, in a media statement. “The benefit of removing this enclosure is to allow elk to access additional habitat, increase the species’ population resilience during drought, and promote a more natural population cycle.”
In 2021, the federal agency released a report that showed more than one third of the 445 elk fenced in at Tomales Point at the time had died the previous winter, reducing the population to 293.
Environmental and animal activists called on the Park Service to remove the fence, saying that it prevented the elk from reaching fresh water outside of the enclosure. Animal rights groups tried to bring water to the elk in 2020 but were rebuffed.
The fence was first installed in 1978 after tule elk were reintroduced to Tomales Point. The minimum population estimate for the herd is 315 elk, according to NPS’ 2024 annual count.
Their fenced-down freedom is expected to, both quickly and over time, improve the health of the herd. Significantly, it will reduce the number of elk deaths from thirst and starvation during California’s hot, dry summer and autumn seasons.

His own Valkyrja
Pairing: fem!Doctor!reader x Hvitserk Ragnarsson
Summary: Valkyrje. They come from the sky to take to Valhalla the warrior that feel in battle but Hvitserk Ragnarsson has his own, very different version of a Valkyrja
A/N: This came to mind while watching Doctor who specials on DIsney+ and I wanted to write a ff for the series since I am back at watching it but I dind't want reader to be the companion so I inverted the roles and made a crossover with my favourite historical Tv Show. Also the TARDIS is referred as she because I felt like doing so.
A/N pt.2: There are a couple of words in Old Norse like já that means yes and Valkyrja/Valkyrje, Old Norse for Valkyria/Valkyrie
The song is in danish/old norse so here a transation of the song
Tumblr media
It was a simple day in Kattegat, nothing special was going on, not during winter. During the snowy season there were just talks, talks about what was the best curse of actions to take in the spring. Were they going to plunder back a new Saxon’s city or were they going to discover and plunder a complete new city? This was something only the spring and summer could tell.
The winter wind was blowing, hard and consistent, like an old friend that wants to catch up. Everyone wearing thick coats to protect themselves from the cold weather and in the crowded market of the city, one of the sons of Ragnar was walking around.
The prince, the man or whatever you want to call him, didn’t had a place to be, nor he was really interested in what people sold in their lonely stools. He just needed time for himself, away from his brothers, his mother and the lords who tried their everything to become friends with him.
Walking around the city, head up to the clouds, Hvitserk Ragnarsson didn’t notice when he walked outside the city’s walls. It was when he was at the forest’s door that he was brought back to reality.
Looking behind him, he couldn’t see the city, nor hear the chattering of the market anymore. It was just him, a snowy and grey landscape. His mind wondered if he had to go back, but then he decided to stay out a little bit longer. He knew that if anyone needed him, they were going to send someone to find him.
The landscape was snowy and grey and silent. Too much silence was keeping company to the warrior, he started singing. Sure, between his brothers he knew Sigurd was the most artistic one. He was the one with a nice voice and gentle touch and the one with the mind filled with honey like words, but Hvitserk, he was pretty sure he came in good second.
The song was one that his mother's maiden used to sing to him and the rest of the Ragnarssons, it was about Ymir and was rather short but his favourite nontheless.
The forest too was silent. The trees' leaves weren't rustling; birds did not chirp on top of his singing voice and no animals dared to make a noise. It was like the wild that populated that place was admiring his voice.
Hvitserk performance got interrupted by a leaves rustling, as if someone moved them aside to not trip or to get hurt. The prince tried to find the source of the noise, ready to fight it was from a foe-man or an ally. Some seconds later he saw her, a female figure walking directed straight to north.
Hvitserk was able to get a glance of her, taking him just a couple of details: she couldn't be taller than him, maybe some centimeters shorter, from his standing point he couldn't say for sure; her hair were messy and up in a simple braid. He decided to follow her, from a distance to not scare her away and to be in control in case she was enemy to him and his kingdom.
Hvitserk Ragnarsson notice her choice of style was weird, nothing he had saw before. The coat was too long, coming down on her ankles; her feet covered in a colorful pair of...
"What are those called?" he asked, curios and getting the girl's attention. She turned back in an instant, and she had to close her eyes a little if she didn't want to faint there in front of him. The viking approached her carefully, slow in his step and stepping back every now and then.
"What... what are you talking about?" she spoke his language, if that was the case maybe she wasn't an enemy. He pointed at her feet, asking once more what those things were. Looking down, the unfamiliar presence kept silence for some seconds. "Those are called sneakers but you won't need to learn the name, don't worry." was her answer.
"Sneakers." he repetead on and on, as to grab the essence of the word, as if he was trying to taste the word she just spoke.
"I was trying to search for some more historically appropriate footwear but my space ship had a problem and it dropped in the middle of the forest. You know where I can find a river or a lake? I really need some water right about now." Even though Hvitserk could understand what she was saying he couldn't understand what she was talking about, she had dropped a word he had no idea what it meant, it wasn't in his native language. The stranger could tell he was confused. "right, you don't know what space ship means. Again nothing to worry about or for you to keep in mind."
"You say I don't have to worry about a lot of things and still haven't told me your name. I am prince Hviterser son of king Ragnar and Queen Aslaugh." he introduced himself. The figure smiled.
"You are right, how rude of me to not introduce myself. I am The Doctor, but not the doctor you are thinking. I can't cure people." the more this so called Doctor spoke, the more Hvitserk's mind was in a state of confusion, what was she talking about?
"Then what do you cure?" a smirk appeared on her face and the prince was warry of that, was it a good or bad sign? She streatched out her hand tilting her head on the side, it was a clear invitation to take her hand and follow wherever she was goint to. It took him a quick minute to decide to trust her, if she was there to kill him she should have tried already. Not that he thought she could do it, but he felt like she wasn't as weak as she seemed.
"you have nice skin." he commented with a small smile pictured on his features. It hadn't been a long time since he had touched a woman but her skin felt different, it made him feel different.
"I think I've heard someone singing, was it you?" the viking man answered with a quick já that he was sure she understood. "You have a nice voice. Can you sing me a song? If you don't mind, of course." Hvitserk started to sing, a different and longer song than the one he had sung previously to meet her, with a calmer tune. This one talked about a love story between a Valkyrja and a brave warrior.
Hvitersk kept his eyes on the Doctor, thinking that she resembled a Valkyrie. Just like the divine creature, she had come from the sky, sure in a ship made for the space, but still from the sky. He felt like she had found him, maybe he was dreaming and it was all in his head. He thought, for a moment, that she came into his dreams to foresee his imminent death.
He didn't notice her halting in her steps, bumping into her. Hvitserk apologized and she realized something was wrong with the TARDIS' translation circuit because she couldn't understand what he had told her, pretty much he had apologized but still, the word didn't register in her mind.
The language, the one she knew as Old Norse, sounded like an old song. She loved it, and it made it at the top of her list of favourite language--something her ninth version started--alongside Ancient North Martian and Sittuun.
She looked left and right, as to remember which way to go, where did the TARDIS landed? East or West? Hvitserk noticed she never let go of his hand, not even when she had trouble keeping her balance. Her hand still in his.
They walked some more and the prince kept on singing, he performed three songs since she had asked the first time, and he was about to sing a fourth one when she let go of his hand. Hvitserk felt the cold wind now, his hand felt the cold weather and if she didn't rushed towards a blue box he would have kept his hand in hers. He liked it.
He kept his eyes on her, walking inside and he waited a little bit. For what he didn't know but he felt it wasn't right to get inside without an invite. She came out some minutes later, asking him why he was staying outside.
"I didn't think I could..."
"Nonsense, come on. I want to show you something." and back inside she went. He followed her, slowly. He had the idea it was an ambush, he had to be carefull. "I'm down here" she said when he opened the door. His eyes couldn't believe what he had in front of him. He walked outside, went around the blue box and then back inside. "I know she is..."
"Smaller outside." he comented. His choice of words triggered her, he saw it. She stiffened, just for a second and he was about to ask if she was doing fine but she didn't gave him the time to ask. "You remind me of a friend I've lost." he was about to give her his condolecence but once again she didn't let him talk, it was like she could read his mind. "Is okay, I'm used to that but here. Come."
Hvitserk approached her, and once again The Doctor took his hand and walked him in front of a square object, with colorful moving drawings.
"What is this?" he asked looking at her.
"This, my dear Hvitserk Ragnarsson is what is hidden behind the sky. Do you want to aknowledge what there is outside of this world?" he noticed her eyes were blinking, like all the starts decided to move into her eyes. She looked etheral, out of this world, just like her blue box.
He agreed, why not? He had nothing to do, nothing to loose so he decided to follow her. He would have followed her no matter what and he was fine with it. He had found his Valkyrja.
He walked around the weird looking piece of metal, studying carefully everything. There were letters he couldn't name but at the same time shapes and colors he had seen both in Kattegat and in his travels over the icy seas; there were objects, like mirrors but they never reflected his face but people he had never met. He was fascinated and confused at the same time.
An earthquake shook up the little blue box and he lost balance for a second, finding support on one of the weird object that were surronding the space inside the box. Hvitserk heard her giggle, for a second and then she was back working on whatever there was in the deepths of that box.
"Doctor, so what exactly did you wanted to show me?" he asked still looking around. Everytime he turned he noticed something new and he was curious to find out what it was.
"I wanted to show you..." her head appearing from somewhere below him. "Something amazing, but I need to fix my ship" she commented.
"This doesn't look like a ship at all." he retored and once again he tried to fullfill his curiosity about what she had called a ship.
"Not in the sense of what you are familiar, no is not, but is a different type of ship." she answered back. "is a ship that sails through time and space" she tried to use words he could understand and even if he did know what sail meant, I mean he did that every spring and summer, he couldn't wrap his head around how a thing could sail through time and space. "this ship can go whenever on this Earth and in every time you want: back in the past, or foward in the future."
The future, he wanted to see what the future had in store for him and his brothers. Were they going to realise all their dreams? Were they going to rise the name of their father to fame? Was he going to have a happy life with a good wife and amazing kids?
"Can we go the future? Not that far into that, just a couple of years." he asked, this time is full attention on his Valkyrja. She smiled. A nice and warm smile.
"Sadly the TARDIS doesn't work like that. Is like she gives me a mission everytime I set her gears on. She sents me when I am needed." another word he couldn't understand but he remember what she had told him before do not worry, and he did not.
"So you are needed here?"
"Not really. My ship needs some time to fix herself. I think she decided the safest place to land was in..."
"Kattegat, 818 AD." he stated. She repeated his words. "Why here?" he asked. Kattegat wasn't the safest option, he knew that. Not when the city feared invasions from basically everyone.
"I might know a lot but this is something I can't tell. Maybe this old lady..." prince Hvitserk followed her every move while she was speaking. "...planned our meeting." she joked, laughing at it. But Hvitersker was pretty sure Urd, Verdandi and Skuld had worked their web to let the two of them. The warrior made a note to himself to leave some offerring to the Norns to thank them for this opportunity. "Now, would you mind show me around?"
He didn’t mind, the more Hvitserk Ragnarsson was alongside her, the happier he was.
Roaming around the market’s stalls it was his time to feed her curiosity. Every question she asked he had the answer, well most of the times.
Everything was going on pretty good until his older brother, Ubbe, whistled to get his attention, he really wanted to run back in the forest to avoid uncomfortable questions from him and the younger of the Ragnarssons.
“Ubbe.” He simply said asking with his eyes to not say anything inappropriate. “Ivar.” He added turning to the the younger of the four brothers.
“Who is she?” Asked the older viking. He took her hand in his and gave it a quick peck—he had learned this during a trip in Wessex—making the Doctor giggle.
“Such a gentleman Ubbe Ragnarsson.”
“Thank you my lady.” Was his throw back(?)
After a quick introduction, whit Hvitserk lying about her name being Brynild like one of the Valkyrje, Ivar invited her to have dinner with them so the two of them and their mother could know more about Hvitserk’s new friend.
“I see if I can attend dinner with your family but I won’t promise anything. But thank you for the invite Prince Ivar.” The title feeded his ego more than enough, the younger prince was happy and limped back from where he came with a soft thank you; Ubbe rolled his eyes and after another act of cavalry he followed in tow his brother.
“I’m sorry for them.” Apologized the second born.
“Is okay. I think the TARDIS is ready. Do you want to live an adventure outside the ordinary?” The viking wanted to tell her that just meeting her was out of the ordinary, sure in a positive way, but still out of this world situation.
“Lead the way, my lady.” And with that they went back into the forest, hand in hand. Hvitserk asking more questions and the Gallifreyan never saying a word.
Hvitserk woke up with a strong head pain, memory of what he thought a dream flooding his mind. He pinched the bridge of his nose in an attempt to relieve a little the pain he was feeling, not noticing his brothers, Ubbe and Björn were looking for him.
"Here you are. Queen Aslaugh wants you home." started Björn and without giving him the time to get up he left for Kattegat on his own. Ubbe, on the other side, took a seat next to his brother and with a smirk on his face asked him if he had fun all that time he was missing.
Hvitserk had to lie, nodding his head yes. He didn't know how to explain that he didn't know where she went, and what happened between the two of them, he thought saying they had some private time together was easier.
"How was she? Do you think I can have her one day?"
"I don't think. She told me she found Kattegat by accident" that was not a lie, well not completely. "and besides she has to take care of her family so I don't think she has much free time."
"What a shame. Well, at least you managed to get her. But do tell, was she good?" That was the only thing Ubbe cared to know, then again is about a viking man we are talking about.
Hvisterk rolled his eyes and smacked his brother to his chest, a way to ask him to shut up and that he wasn't going to give him details about it.
Weeks passed and Hvitserk had made it a routine to check the market from the main door of the Great Hall. Watching carefully to see if she was coming back anytime soon.
Then months passed and he realized she was not coming back to Kattegat, he needed to move on. But then it came one day, one beautiful spring day where he saw her, or so he thought, because that woman in the market looking for a pin to use for her hair looked almost ideantical to his Valkyrja. What was more astonoshing was the fact she had fall in love with the prince. Hvitserk decided to take it as a sign from the Gods and after a couple of weeks they got married.
Spending nights together, it was not a surprise to hear his wife giving him the news she was with child and Hvitserk was the happiest to hear it. He had told his brothers first. Björn patted his back, proud of him; Ubbe smirked and laughed at his own words when he said that the little brother had been working hard and Ivar just smiled, happy for his older brother. Then when his mother found out, she decided to throw a party, all Kattegat was welcomed to celebrate the news.
Nine months later, or so, Hvitserk's daughter was born. A beautiful and healty baby girl. Hvitserk looked at her with stars in his eyes, she was going to be his first priority from now on.
"How do you want to call her?" asked one of the women that helped his wife deliver the little girl.
"Brynhildr" he said without esitation. The couple didn't talked about the name but that sounded a good fit for the girl. "I like Brynhildr." he added. He started cooing at his daughter, making her giggle and wrapping her little hand on his big pinky.
"She loves you already." said his wife, a weak giggle leaving her lips. "She is going to be a daddy's girl. Boys will be terrified to ask for her hand" she joked.
"She is going to grow into a fine woman." he commented and gave it back to the one who gave her to him, so that the new addiction to the family could spend time with her mother.
Hvitserk left the little house, taking in the cold weather of the winter season, looking up to the sky he closed his eyes and took a deep breath before opening them again.
"I might not see you again, my Valkyrja, but the memory will be always be with until my very end." Was it then, that his brothers came to take him out to drink. He just had a daughter, it was a good enought reason to celebrate.

Parc Natural del Delta de l'Ebre (Terres de l'Ebre, Catalonia). Photos by Miguel Ángel Álvarez and Ferran Aguilar in El Temps.
The river Ebro's delta is one of the biggest wetland areas in the Western Mediterranean. Since 2013, it's declared Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.
This landscape is characterized by its flat surface covered in rice fields, reed beds, sandy beaches and lagoons formed when the sweet river water and the salty sea water meet. It's home to a rich diversity of animals, most importantly birds and fish. It's also one of the most popular stopping points for migratory birds in their routes between Africa and Europe.
A river's delta is a changing landscape, and this one doesn't fall short. It changes depending on the season: in winter, the rice fields are all covered by water, and in summer they're all green. But the biggest changes have been due to the river bringing sediment throughout the centuries. The coastline and the river's course have moved a lot, and for this reason the towns in the area have also had to move.
In addition, in recent years the delta has been threatened by extreme weather conditions derived from climate change. Mid-latitude cyclones like the Storm Gloria (2020) and Storm Filomena (2021) have greatly affected the delta because the sea has entered thousands of kilometres inland, destroying some beaches and flooding the rice fields, which effectively kills the rice plants. This was a disaster for the farmer families, especially considering that this is the poorest area of Catalonia and farmers are particularly affected by poverty.

What If Season 3 - What If... The Hulk fought the Mech Avengers? Thoughts
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"The rage isn't even the worst part when he takes over. It's the fear. The fear I see in everyone else's eyes." Bruce Banner
"And how does that make you feel?" Sam Wilson
"Lonely. Because if I'm being honest, I'm just as scared of myself as they are of me." Bruce Banner
"Well, look around you. Ain't no one's afraid of you here, Bruce." Sam Wilson
Really strong start to the final season. I didn't expect the emotions to be the episode's main focus. I really love what they did with Bruce and Sam while highlighting the tragedy of Bruce's character and Sam's greatest strength: empathy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love how we open with an anime Godzilla and Gundam homage with the in-universe show of the Mech Avengers taking on the Gamma Beasts.
The Sam and Bruce dynamic was something I was not expecting at all (and a nod to the Winter Soldier is always great). But man, it hits you really hard when Bruce lays down the tragedy of his character and situation: how he's just as scared of himself as the people who are scared of him. And you really feel Sam trying to help connect to Bruce. I love it when the MCU remembers Sam is a counselor.
It was pretty noice to see the What If series connect to the D+ shows with Sarah, the family boat, and Moon Knight. It's heartbreaking to see Bruce transform into the Hulk and become scared of how even if Sam understands, he still can't let go of the feeling he's the problem. The episode really highlights how you have to keep on trying to recover (in this case, keep on going to therapy) and not detach yourself from others, or else you'll do actions not that great in hindsight. It's what makes the tragedy of Banner's character in the MCU so compelling. He doesn't want to separate himself from others but he feels like he can't.
I love how the Mech Avenger suits are in-universe supposed to be giant Hulk-Busters. The Gamma War (the closest thing we'll get to a World War Hulk haha) took out the OG Avengers save for Bruce, and man I would love to see what the first war looks like. It really does set the tone of why Sam feels like being friends with Banner was a mistake given the destructive war it wrought.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also love this new Avengers team. I can't believe we got an Avengers team before the discussion of one in the upcoming Brave New World movie lmao. I do find it sad how this is the first time since 2021 and 2022 that we saw some of these characters (Shang-Chi and Mark Spector to name some). I also like Monica's role in the episode, I always like seeing character interactions we don't see in the Sacred Timeline.
I find it sad how Sam, the person with empathy and understanding towards people, thinks being Banner's friend messed up everything.
It was pretty funny how Banner made his home at an abandoned government project (he even noted how it made him fit the most) at the Astra Islands.
"So that's it, huh? The rest of the world gets to fight your monsters while you just hide in fear?" Sam Wilson
"Fear? What do you know about fear, Sam? About being a threat. A living force of destruction." Bruce Banner
"I know you can't get past the things that scare you if you don't face them." Sam Wilson
"Why do you think I built this protocol?" Bruce Banner
"You built it to use against yourself?" Sam Wilson
"I built it to protect everyone from a monster no one can control." Bruce Banner
"Look, I've never seen a monster when I look at you, Bruce. I've only ever seen my friend. I guess I hoped if you faced this thing, then maybe you'd see what I see, too." Sam Wilson
That conversation between Sam and Bruce really set the emotional core of the episode. Despite how Sam felt about earlier, he still saw deep down that Bruce was still his friend and still tried to help Bruce face his fears, even if he didn't think that was possible. I admittedly felt a bit teary-eyed at the episode and the emotional core. I just love to see people tell others that they're not monsters.
"Avenger, assemble." Sam Wilson
The Avenger mech assemble goes so fucking hard. I only wished we got more action sequences with the mechs, but the emotional core of the story really carried the episode. That nuclear explosion shot is done really well. And I love scenes where the human character sees the Godzilla monster and realizes they're not a monster, but a friend. That's what the episode is all about: how people see themselves and how accepting them can save not only the world but themselves as well.
The music by Laura Karpman and Nora Kroll-Rosenbaum is amazing and very emotional in this episode. I can't wait to see their music in the rest of this season (Hopefully, their music album will contain a lot more tracks than just one per episode because Disney did a disservice to the duo by doing just that for S2). The music really captures the emotional and epic stakes of the Gundam and Godzilla-inspired episode.
This was a great start to the final season of What If (hopefully not the permanent end). Hopefully, the next three episodes will be a lot more light-hearted but we'll see.
Tumblr media
"I know you've always been scared that everyone just sees you as a monster. But from where I'm standin', all I see now is a friend. And I'd bet my life that you still see one, too." Sam Wilson
"I'm sorry, Sam. I know he was your friend." Monica Rambeau
"He still is." Sam Wilson
"Big things have small beginnings. Even the way a person sees themselves can change their lives and the fate of the entire world. But in humanity's darkest hour, sometimes the greatest heroes are the friends who accept us for who we really are." Uatu

The Tripledemic That Wasn’t - Published Dec 16, 2024
Covid mitigations kept respiratory diseases like RSV and Influenza at bay during 2020 and 2021. Dropping mask mandates brought them back, giving us the "tripledemics" and "quademics" being experienced right now. Mask up. Keep everyone safe and healthy.
By Marie Rosenthal, MS As the “traditional” respiratory season began during the COVID-19 pandemic, public health experts, infectious disease doctors and hospital administrators were gearing up for a “tripledemic”—they were anticipating months of fighting not only SARS-CoV-2, but also influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
With the three viruses expected to surge across the country, experts were offering advice about protecting family, friends and colleagues. At the time, 12,000 people were dying from COVID-19 each day in the United States alone. Hospitals were barely handling the onslaught of incoming cases. What would they do if 200,000 or more people showed up at their doors with influenza or RSV? A “normal” flu season sees 100,000 to 710,000 hospitalizations and 36,000 to 51,000 deaths. A “normal” RSV season could hospitalize at least 120,000 people and kill 6,100.
Yet, to the relief of many, the tripledemic was not seen during the 2020-2021 respiratory season. So, what happened? Infectious Disease Special Edition spoke with three respiratory virus experts about what they saw, and why they think they saw it, and what that means for the future of influenza.
“The 2020 to 2021 season was the lowest influenza on record,” said William Schaffner, MD, FIDSA, a professor of medicine, Department of Infectious Diseases, and a professor of preventive medicine, Department of Health Policy, at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, in Nashville, Tenn. “The curve was essentially flat. We even had some conversations with our colleagues in Canada, who said that the flu cases we were discovering were probably in error,” he jested.
“Flu was not just mild; it was absent, because of the very things that drove people crazy about COVID: segregation and wearing masks,” explained Arnold S. Monto, MD, the co-director of the Michigan Center for Respiratory Virus Research and Response, as well as professor emeritus in epidemiology and public health at the University of Michigan, School of Public Health, in Ann Arbor.
Mitigating Factors
There probably were two factors at play, according to the experts. The first was viral exclusion or interference, which can occur when people or animals are exposed to multiple viruses simultaneously. As the organisms jockey for position, one becomes dominant and the others wait their turn, so to speak. This is seen frequently during normal flu seasons—one strain of flu, often influenza A, sweeps across the country first, and then influenza B comes through near the end of the season.
“I think that when there is a respiratory virus roaring through the community, it can be hard for other respiratory viruses to break in,” said Richard J. Webby, PhD, the director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Studies on the Ecology of Influenza in Animals and Birds, and a member of the staff of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, in Memphis, Tenn.
“When you look at peaks of influenza A, influenza B or RSV over a winter season, more often than not, those peaks don’t overlay [one another]. One comes first and then when one is coming down, the other one will come up,” he said.
The other dynamic—and probably the biggest influencer—was the actions that were put into place to mitigate COVID-19. Social distancing and masking had much to do with stopping the spread of all the respiratory diseases, all three experts told Infectious Disease Special Edition.
“I think it was the unexpected consequence of everything that we were doing against COVID,” Dr. Webby said. “But influenza activity went to very low levels [that season] as did other respiratory viruses as well.”
Mitigation factors were important, according to Dr. Schaffner, because once people stopped wearing masks, attended church services and headed back to school, influenza quickly regained its place in the respiratory hierarchy.
“Quite clearly people were staying home [during COVID],” Dr. Schaffner said. “And most importantly, children were not going to school. They were not playing together, and of course, children have the great ‘distribution franchise’ … for influenza virus.”
One reason children are such efficient spreaders in the community is they shed flu virus for longer periods than adults do. While at school, daycare or play, they spread the virus among themselves and then bring it home to adult family and friends, Dr. Schaffner said.
“So, it’s clear the opportunities to spread the virus were so profoundly reduced in 2021, and we did not have an influenza season,” he added.
“I don’t think it was the interference between COVID and flu. Most people think it was the lockdowns and the changes in patterns, particularly schools being closed because schools are where everything is usually being spread. Just look at rhinovirus. Rhinovirus season starts after school opens,” Dr. Monto said.
Another factor that typically affects influenza hospitalizations and deaths is vaccination, but in this case, influenza vaccination was down, which is another reason the experts point to nonpharmacologic mitigation factors. Influenza vaccination has been decreasing since the pandemic. The CDC estimates that in the 2023-2024 flu season, only 55.4% of children from 6 months through 17 years received a flu vaccination—a decrease of 2 percentage points compared with the previous flu season (57.4%) and a decrease of 8.3 percentage points compared with 2019-2020 (63.7%).
Flu vaccination coverage was also low among adults. Only 44.9% of adults ages 18 and older were vaccinated against flu, a decrease of 2.0 percentage points from the previous season (46.9%). Adults saw an initial increase in flu coverage right after the pandemic started, but coverage has continued to decline, according to the CDC (bit.ly/49s7iVu-IDSE).
Taking Its Course
To tease out what happened to the other respiratory viruses, an Israeli study examined hospital admissions related to respiratory diseases among children before and after the pandemic. They retrospectively reviewed medical records from November 2020 to January 2021, and compared them with the same periods during the previous two years. They found 1,488 hospitalizations due to respiratory illnesses: 632 in 2018-2019, 701 in 2019-2020, and 144 in 2020-2021. They attributed the significant decline in respiratory viral and bacterial coinfections during the pandemic to viral interference, as well as social distancing and wearing masks (Isr Med Assoc J 2023;25[3]:171-176).
This was reiterated in several studies, including a recent review in Emerging Infectious Diseases, which predicted a return to more normal flu seasons as the COVID-19 emergency abated (2022;28[2]:273-281). “During the coronavirus disease pandemic, nonpharmacologic interventions have prevented the circulation of most respiratory viruses. Once the sanitary restrictions are lifted, circulation of seasonal respiratory viruses is expected to resume and will offer the opportunity to study their interactions, notably with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2.”
As predicted, flu did fight its way back into circulation. The following year, 2021-2022, influenza started later than usual, but in 2022-2023, it started earlier, as “though the virus was getting back into its rhythm,” Dr. Schaffner said, and the 2024-2025 season appears to be behaving “just the way a conventional flu season starts.”
Dr. Webby added: “I think because we stopped doing everything that we were doing during the height of the pandemic—we stopped wearing masks, we started traveling again—COVID settled into more peaks of activity rather than year-round activity, so all of those things that helped keep flu away were gone.”
A Prudent Response
Based on this experience and what they know about respiratory viruses, all three experts agreed that wearing a mask in public during respiratory season is a prudent thing to do, especially if a person is immunocompromised. They also reiterated the importance of staying home when people are sick to stop the spread of all respiratory viruses.
“I recommend a mask for people who are at increased risk of getting more severe disease should they become infected,” Dr. Schaffner said. They should ask themselves these questions: “Are they more likely to become seriously ill and require hospitalization and intensive care admission? Are they at increased risk of dying? Eighty percent of the deaths occur in people 65 and older.
“As a person who is in that group, when I go to the supermarket or the drugstore, or anywhere, I wear a mask,” he said. “So, I think it would be a good idea.”
The viruses are respiratory, and thus spread through airborne particles, reminded Dr. Monto; therefore, anything that reduces that spread is worthwhile. He said he doesn’t understand the resistance to wearing a mask, “because it does work. Why does a surgeon wear a mask in an operating room? Because we know that wearing masks helps to stop the spread of infection,” Dr. Monto said. “It’s not a total answer, but it’s a partial one.”
“In some parts of the world, wearing a mask is still a pretty common practice, so obviously, it does work,” Dr. Webby said, but he added that he thinks it’s the combination of actions that is important. “What impact does wearing a mask on its own have? I don’t think we know,” he said. “People are traveling or were still maybe a little more likely to go to work with a bit of the sniffles as opposed to staying home, so it is hard to tease those out in my mind, but it makes good sense to wear a mask.”
In addition, they said healthcare providers should continue to recommend vaccination against COVID-19 and influenza, as well as RSV, if eligible, because the vaccines help reduce the risk for hospitalizations and death.
Despite the best prognostications, flu is unpredictable, Dr. Schaffner reminded. Although everyone thought a tripledemic would occur, it didn’t. It wasn’t the end of flu by a long shot, and flu came back this season just as it always has.
Dr. Monto concurred: “There are a lot of people who like to say, ‘We understand this.’ But in reality, when you look at what happens, there is a lot we don’t understand. We observe, and we try to predict.”

My Sera Myu Ranking only the ones I've seen so far.
Tumblr media
16. Shin Densetsu Kourin (1998) I don't know exactly why, but something about the musical bothers me. I think the idea of antagonists from three different seasons is cool. But somehow it's too over the top for me. Unfortunately, there's not much to say about the cast, as most of them only appear once. Which I find very unfortunate in the case of the Sailor Pluto actress, for example. Some of my favorites make their first appearance here, like Nao and Ayano. Hikari and Yuuta Mochizuki are also there, which I love.
Tumblr media
15. Un Nouveau Voyage (2015) Perhaps an unpopular opinion but there are a few things that bother me about this musical. For one thing, it's not the musical itself that's to blame. It's the last musical with these Inner Senshi. I like Hotaru and her Inners but I think Satomi & Co are better.I don't like Airi Kanda as Chibiusa. I think she's too old for the role, which is particularly noticeable in Le Mouvement Final. The antagonists are so forgettable. What I think is good is that they gave more light to Professor Tomoe's backstory. But the most important part: the Outer Senshi. And that's where the musical fails for me. Because I don't like the Outer Senshi except for Pluto. Haruka is too shy for me and the role of leader is more likely to be taken by Michiru. Michiru is very cold and aloof. Yes, Michiru is like that, after all, it's reflected in her planet. Neptune is the coldest planet in our solar system. But what is the most important thing for the third story arc: Sailor Saturn.  But in the musical we never have a good Saturn when you need her. Karin is a good Hotaru. The vulnerable and sickly Hotaru. The friendship with Chibiusa is also well portrayed. But I don't know who came up with the idea that Karin also plays Misstress 9. That might sound good in theory, but not in practice. Karin is too young for Misstress 9 in my opinion. After my complaints, there are of course things that I liked. The reference to the 90s anime, for example Venus pretending to be Sailor Moon. The labyrinth theme was expanded more. I like that there is no argument with Usagi and Mamoru over Haruka and the scene in general.
Tumblr media
14. Kaguya-hime no Koibito (2021) A musical based on one of the films/the longest short story. I think it's generally nice that this story has now been made into a musical. It's a beautiful musical that gets emotional at the end. The focus is on Luna, who falls in love with Kakeru. Most of the action revolves around Luna & Kakeru. But the rest of the cast fades into the background and doesn't really play a big role. Sailor Saturn appears in the play even though she doesn't appear in the film or the short story. There are good songs and I like the way Luna was portrayed. The effects are great too. It's a beautiful musical that's very suitable for the Christmas season because of the light winter-Christmas atmosphere.
Tumblr media
13. 30th Anniversary Musical Festival Chronicle (2022) The only small original story in the new musicals. It is more or less a continuation of the previous musical Kaguya-hime no Koibito. I think it's nice that a new story was told. Even if not much was made of it. More could have been made of it. More could have been done with the brainwashed Snow Luna. That she actually attacks the Senshi. That there is a fight and Usagi doesn't want to fight because after all it's her friend Luna that's at stake. Maybe even that Luna herself defeats Snow Princess Kaguya and not Sailor Moon. But the focus is more on the songs. After all, it is an anniversary musical. There so many songs around 30 (lol). It contains songs from all the new musicals, even from The Super Live, one from Bandai Myu and a few new ones. Very good songs were selected and the end is quite emotional. Unfortunately, Bandai Myu was not referred to much, even though there were guests from the musicals. They probably wanted to put more focus on the new ones, as many viewers don't know the old musicals at all and Nelke doesn't have the rights to them yet. Nelke probably wants to promote its musicals more. The cast is good, but the characters are pushed into the background due to the many songs. The problem that it is difficult to say anything about the cast is that there is already a predecessor.  In the predecessor, the focus is on Luna and here are the songs more in the foreground.
Tumblr media
12. Gaiden Dark Kingdom Fukkatsu- Hen (1993) Some people will wonder how this musical has made it this far despite having so many weaknesses. There are logical gaps, plot holes and overall it doesn't make much sense. The wigs and costumes are pretty ugly. The dancing and singing weren't as good as they were later. It takes place after the first season but the Dark Kingdom returns without explanation. Why didn't they just tell the first season straight away? Overall it's more based on the anime than the manga. But why is it so far ahead despite that? I think you could call it a guilty pleasure or compare it to trash TV. It's so bad it's good.Purely in terms of staging and production quality, it's obviously not good, especially when you compare it to Festival Chronicle, KaguyaMyu and Un Nouveau Voyage.
Tumblr media
11. Le Mouvement Final (2017) I know it's an unpopular opinion and I don't know what bothers me. The music is great, the costumes are beautiful just like before, it's emotional. It's a very close adaptation of the last act. Satomi comes back as Sailor Cosmos. But I think the problem lies in the underlying story arc itself. I like the star act, but I like all story arcs. A lot of the characters fade into the background because almost all of them die in the course of the first act. That's why many of the actresses don't have much stage time. The relationships between the characters suffer a lot as a result, and the development of the characters. It's like at the beginning when Usagi is alone again. In the manga, many more characters die who don't appear in the musical, like the three cats and some of Galaxia's subordinates. But it's cool that a story finally doesn't take place on Earth. Sailor Moon is about planetary warriors, but it's always only about Earth.
Tumblr media
10. Mugen Gakuen Misstress Labyrinth & Kaiteiban (2002 - 2003) Like Un Nouveau Voyage, it is a musical for the third season. But it was the first musical for the third story arc that included all the characters. All the antagonists and all the Senshi are there. I really like the Outer Senshi in this musical, but we're talking about Nao, Yuka, and Yuko, after all. It was also Nao's & Yuka's last musical. Saturn doesn't do much, but she also shows the vulnerable and sickly Hotaru. We have a separate Misstress 9 actress who also seems very threatening. I generally like the villains here better. The problem I have with this musical are the supporting characters that were invented for this musical. The alien family from Planet Grimm. I don't understand why they exist, they add a lot more confusion and are unnecessary in my opinion. It becomes unnecessarily complicated. There are far too many of them. There are original characters that are well written, like in Kaguya Shima Densetsu, but not here. Without the supporting characters the musical would be higher.
Tumblr media
9. Amour Eternal (2016) The second musical for the fourth story arc. It is a mixture of the manga, anime and the other fourth season musical. I like the Outer Senshi much more here than in the previous one. The trio is very likeable and Nehellinia can sing very well and seems very threatening. From here on, more effects are used which are very nice. The music is very good. The only thing that disappointed me were the circus scenes. That is probably because I really like the other fourth season musical and the circus scene is incredibly good. Abd I'm also a little sad that Satomi & Co don't play the Inner Senshi anymore.
Tumblr media
8. 10th Anniversary Festival- Ai no Sanctuary (2002) Yes, like Festival Chronicle, it's just an anniversary musical. But with its own story that is much more developed. The wrestling theme didn't appeal to me and that part is a bit tiring. It goes too far with the epicness, as if Sailor Moon had just defeated all the villains from all the seasons at once. But I did have a lot of fun with this musical. I've also watched it without subtitles. I think you can only like this musical if you know a lot about Sera Myu. Firstly, the songs are all really good. It has to be said that they chose very popular songs. Some songs are variations of earlier songs, some songs are completely new and were written especially for this, some songs never appeared again afterwards. Many popular actors made their last appearance here or their penultimate appearance here. An era came to an end here during the Bandai era.
Tumblr media
7. Dracul Arc (2000 - 2001) The only musicals that tell a big, complex story. They were my first musicals, even if they aren't really suitable for beginners. It's an original story with lots of new characters. You have to watch the musicals several times to understand everything. But I like the actors, the music and the extensive story that is told. And Miyuki Kanbe (my favorite Moon actress) plays Sailor Moon.
Tumblr media
6. Petite Éstrangère (2014) I like the musical a lot. I like the Inners a lot, but that was also the case in the previous series. Some scenes are very funny. Chibiusa isn't annoying. I like the antagonists and the plot twist with Saphir and Demande is particularly cool. Some logical gaps from the manga have been fixed. But my highlight is definitely Sailor Pluto. I like Pluto's song a lot and her friendship and motherly relationship with Chibiusa is portrayed very well. Something that I missed in the other second season musical. Pluto's death is very emotional and how sad Chibiusa is.
Tumblr media
5. Tanjou Ankoku no Princess Black Lady & Kaiteiban Wakusei Nemesis no Nazo (2002 - 2003) The first musical for the second season was already mentioned. It's cool that all the Outer Senshi are there even though we're in the Black Moon Arc and how they were included. That's probably because the actresses were very popular. Chibiusa isn't annoying and comes out with the truth very quickly and everything happens a bit faster. I particularly like the antagonists, Demande, who has a very strong character development at the end and gives a very emotional monologue. Of the original characters, I especially like the two little girls Aaron and Mana.Black Lady seems very evil and threatening. Although I have to say that I like the Black Lady from the original better and I don't like the second Chibiusa in Kaiteiban so much. Mao Kawasaki was Chibiusa and Chibi Chibi before and is an incredibly good Black Lady.Unfortunately I think Pluto's death doesn't have as much impact as in Petite Éstrangère because Chibiusa and Pluto only get to know each other at the beginning. In Petite Éstrangère the relationship is there from the start.
Tumblr media
4. La Reconquista (2013) It was the first musical I saw after the Dracula arc. It is the first Sailor Moon Musicals by Nelke Planning and the second musical for the first season. However, it takes a lot of liberties and is the only one of the new musicals that doesn't stick so closely to the manga. The first act has nothing to do with the manga. The Senshi/Shitennou romance plays a big role but with the focus on Ami & Zoisite and that is very cute. It is the only one of the new musicals that has an original character that I really like. I also like some things much better than the manga. Like the Senshi really giving their lives to wake Usagi up again because the (stupid) moon phase clock doesn't exist here. But there is more but I don't want to list it all. I like the soundtrack and I think it's one of the musicals I've seen most often. You could almost call it a guilty pleasure. The portrayal of Usagi and Mamoru's relationship is a little strange and more reminiscent of the 90s anime. I don't know if that was the intention but it is a problem that runs through almost all of the newer musicals.  It reminds me of Bandai Myu because it does its own thing. The remnants of Bandai Myu are still noticeable here in contrast to the musicals that followed.
Tumblr media
3. Nogizaka 46 Version Musical (2018, 2019 & 2024) The musical is pretty much the opposite of La Reconquista. You could say it's an shortened version of the manga as a musical. I have to say that the Dark Kingdom Arc is my favorite story arc. For the first time, the awakening of the Senshi is addressed. Luna returns as a doll after 25 years. Naru & Umino appear for the first time. One thing is for sure, the effects are absolutely amazing. There are real live on stage transformations here. I also really like the songs, but some of them are repeated a lot, which is a bit annoying. The antagonists are also great, especially with the Shitennou, you can see how much fun they're having. We have the Senshi & Shitennou romance again here, but with the focus on Kunzite and Minako. Also, Kunzite's death is the reason why Venus defeats Beryl with the holy sword. It's a shame that Tuxedo Mask doesn't have his own song, but the focus is on the well-known idols who play the Senshi. It also bothers me that the musical ends with the start of the second story arc, but the subsequent seasons were never implemented in this form. I don't think that will happen. I don't want to go into the individual versions and teams in more detail here, since all five versions basically tell the same story.
Tumblr media
2. Kaguya Shima Densetsu & Kaiteiban Natsuyasumi Houseki Tanken-Tai (1999) A musical that, like the Dracul Arc, tells a completely original story. I know there's a remake and a revised version, but I'm only talking about the original and the revised version in particular. What can I say, the cast is great throughout. Almost all of my favorite actors are there. Yuuta Mochizuki and Hikari are there too. I know there's hardly any Senshi Time, but that doesn't really bother me. This way we see a lot more of civilian life and relationships. I also think the idea of two groups of villains with different goals is great. Some of the effects are pretty cool, like the boat getting caught in a storm or the dragon breathing fire.I know the story is developed more in the remake, but as I said, I'm only talking about the original and Kaiteiban here. The kittens can be a bit annoying, but oh well. The songs are all great and I would have liked Fumina to be around longer than Moon.
Tumblr media
1. Yume Senshi Ai eien ni & Kaiteban Saturn Fukkatsu- Hen (1995 - 1996) And finally my favorite musical. Yume Senshi Ai eien ni, especially the Kaiteiban. I think it's great how Hotaru was incorporated into the Death Moon Circus. Thank you to whoever had the idea. We also finally see that Saturn is the Sailor Guardian of renewal and not just destruction. She wakes up with a mega song and brings the Senshi and Mamoru back to life. She also frees the souls of the trio. I think the idea that the Senshi want to take part in the circus is cool and it's funny that Usagi can't get anything done. Fish Eye hits on Mamoru but he clearly shows no interest. (Points that were carried over into Amour Eternal, even if I don't think the implementation with Fish Eye is so good) I love the swing scene. Usagi and Mamoru are very well implemented in this musical. Generally speaking, I think Anza and Yuuta do a great job. Chibiusa and Helios' relationship is also very well portrayed and I'm glad that no one was put in a Pegasus costume.  I find the theory of Yuuta Enomoto as Helios really interesting. Their voices are really similar. Especially since both musicals start with the same song. The Senshi are brainwashed but Usagi can free them. The song is very emotional and I had to cry. The effects are cool and we have a recorded transformation. We get to see Eternal Sailor Moon for the first time. And my highlight is the circus scene. It's actually just a dream of Usagi's but whatever. Usagi and Chibiusa ride unicycles, Ami walks on a ball, Rei and Makoto perform a magic trick, Minako dances with the trio. Tigers Eye breaks balloons with his whip, clowns walk in the air (there's a rope, I know) and lots of acrobatics. The transvestite jokes were unnecessary but you can see that the musical is old and that makes Amour Eternal better.  It was not without reason that I said that Amour Eternal has some similarities or was inspired by it.
Disclaimer: This is just my opinion. I do not own any rights to Sailor Moon. The rights belong to Kodansha, Bandai, Bandai Visual, Nelke Planning, Nogizaka46, Toei Animation, PNP and the creator Naoko Takeuchi.

TPN Committee: Yeah we’re going to horribly truncate this anime adaption by cutting 50+ chapters, removing so much of the nuance people loved about the original story and make it the greatest disappointment of Winter 2021 after the first season was a critical darling, but as compensation you can have some REN Rights in the form of this album cover that wouldn't be out of place for a shoujo series
