Delicious In Dungeon Episode 6: Court Cuisine/Boiled In Saltwater
Being a manga reader, I really don't have much to say in the world of story for Delicious In Dungeon. Conversely, I have a world of stuff to say about the adaptation end of things, but I'll keep it short.
Keita Nagahara, the storyboarder for this episode, perfectly understood the assignment. They know what Trigger does best, and they know how to make the most of the source material.
Comedy, action, excessive character animation, Nagahara's episode has it all in spades, wrapped up under very solid awareness of dimensionality and space.
Their use of foreground obstruction to force depth and awareness of space is incredible, and insanely novel. Using party members as those obstructions is impeccable, and I love how they further subvert expectations by using party members for first person perspectives as well.
It's certainly recency bias telling me that this episode is the best of the season, but at the very minimum it is 100% on par with episode 3. Makes me wonder if every episode that's a multiple of 3 will be this good.

Dandadan Episode 7 Review - A Mother's Love
If Episode 4 hasn’t put Science Saru on the map for high quality animation, then this episode surely did. I haven’t read the source material, but even as an anime-only watcher, I can definitely see the love and passion the studio puts into this. It’s crazy how a Japanese anime studio owned by a Korean person can make such invigorating quality.
Tumblr media
The rest of the fight with Acrobatic Silky was animated well. I love how the kids outwitted her by running away just so her hair gets caught in the nook and cranny of the warehouse. Okarun manages to defeat her by going full throttle. However, their victory isn’t a happy one as devouring Aira caused her to die. Turbo Granny explained that since she’s an ordinary person, being devoured by a spirit would easily kill someone. I sort of like that detail, honestly. There’s no anime logic about how she could survive this. She’s dead and that is what the rest of the episode is about.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What I also like is that seeing her dead easily causes Momo and Okarun to start doing what they can like telling Turbo Granny to call the ambulance and for Momo to resuscitate her using her psychic hands. Though, it does feel odd that a group of teenagers know how to resuscitate someone so skillfully, even if it’s an attempt. They’re both not doctors and are on the opposite spectrum of them. The only way she can be saved is having Acrobatic Silky connect her aura to Aira’s like connecting two cords together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That’s where the highlight of the episode comes in the form of Silky’s tragic backstory. Man, it broke my heart seeing Silky’s life before her unfortunate end. She was a single mother working as a prostitute alongside several jobs in order to provide for her and her beloved daughter who was her entire world and her purpose for living. Her daughter was sweet in that she was essentially her light in her life. She worked hard in order to buy the red dress that eventually becomes what she wears as a ghost and she was also teaching her daughter ballet. The tragedy comes from debt collectors or mobsters coming in to assault her and then they later took her daughter away, which is severely tragic because the sequences of her life before the tragedy shows that her daughter just celebrated her fifth birthday. If the mobsters are related to trafficking, this means that her daughter’s fate became that of a trafficked child and that’s horrendous in itself. Also, props to Hina Kino for voicing the daughter. She's excellent at creating a child-like voice, especially with how she wailed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Silky’s dance sequence before meeting her end was seriously beautiful, yet so tragic. The scenery with the starry night was gorgeous but Silky starts dancing. Ballet is an elegant, graceful and poised style of dancing and that’s how she decided to meet her end. The way it was animated was so gorgeous. Also, if you noticed, Silky’s dancing was used in the full music video of Dandadan’s opening song.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are some people out there wondering if Silky’s daughter is Aira. She’s not. When Silky became a ghost, she could only stand listlessly until little Aira came and mistook her for her recently deceased mother. Realizing that she had a daughter, Silky latched onto Aira and decided to protect her until it became obsessive and psychotic.
Tumblr media
This sequence also showcases why Aira behaved the way she did earlier. She’s a narcissist primarily because of what her father had said about her needing to become stronger in order to let her mother be proud of her once she sees her again. That was why she developed a high self-confidence in order to one day show her late mother. She may have been insufferable before but the memories have completely humbled her. The way she hugged Silky just so she could have solace and not be forgotten in death was such a powerful scene. This shows that underneath her pompous attitude, Aira had a kind heart. My opinion of her instantly changed after this. Wow. I legit shed some tears.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wonder if Dandadan’s story is just encountering a ghost or an alien and learning of their stories or what not. There doesn’t seem to be an overall grand scheme of things. I like that honestly. It’s just a story about kids encountering the supernatural and learning a lot of life lessons amidst the craziness. Please correct me if I’m wrong. Anyways, what are your thoughts about this episode?

First episode of YoHaji finally came out!
And boy I'm pretty upset because they skipped so many details 😭
The very first incident with his power, the tanuki chase across the school, meeting the other teachers, visiting the dorms, Hijita explaining beforehand why it's his fault that Zashiki isn't there, etc...
Like, they literally melted together 3 chapters in one single day! While each chapter is actually a day or so!
I don't know if should be so looking forward the next episodes if they keep cutting off so many details....
At least the graphisme isn't too bad

Okay, I watched the original Hellsing tv series and, I'm sorry, Hellsing Ultimate, I'm sorry I was blaming you for bad plot and even worse finale, we both stand against the greater evil.
Tumblr media
Like seriously, what the fuck is original Hellsing series after episode 4? It was so good, and then they tried to make their own plot and characters and what they came up with was this ugly mf? Seriously? Who are you, ugly
Tumblr media
I was SO hyped when I saw first few episodes because they had more interactions between characters, humans weren't useless in fight, everything seemed more like it was supposed to be and the plot was understandable but still had the edgy from the manga, and, yes, Alucard was incredibly sexy and I loved how his interactions with Victoria shifted to softer side with him being more conciderate (also no sexualization jokes! (or they were very light at least)
Tumblr media
If anyone hasn't watched original tv series yet and is thinking about watching them, please, I beg of you, just watch first 4 episodes and consider this anime was abruptly finished due to the lack of funding and other episodes do not exist. You will thank me later.

So I was thinking about Gintama and this one episode where Gintoki and Hasegawa decide to go out and gamble all their money on horse races. Hawegawa’s doing all the horse math and Gintoki’s just guessing since he’s never done this before. And on his last chance to gamble Gintoki bets all his money on the first horse Hasegawa rules out. I love the idea that Gintoki sees Hasegawa as some kind of anti luck monster, that not only will Hasegawa bet wrong, he will bet as wrong as humanly possible. Luck hates Hasegawa so much that Gintoki thinks he can monetize it. (And he’s right, but he still manages to lose anyways.)
Gintoki’s life hasn’t been easy, but he’s never met someone as unlucky as Hasegawa, who started off as an upper crust-ish bureaucrat and now can’t even keep a job or house. But then I thought, Gintoki also doesn’t really have a real job, the Yorozuya barely gets any work, and the only reason Gintoki isn’t homeless is because of Otose.
Otose.
And then I started thinking about Otose. And this is how Gintama gets me. The average episode is high octane comedy, all the goofy hijinks the Yorozuya gets up to on the day to day, and it draws no attention to the fact that Gintoki would be dead without Otose. That this story began when she found him freezing to death on her husband’s gravestone. The comedy is like jangling keys, like haha, Gintoki didn’t pay his rent and Otose’s coming after him again! But it’s only funny because she will never kick him out. Never. Otose being a grumpy old woman is only funny because it’s not true, because we know that her kindness is what saved Gintoki’s life. And what does Gintoki do with that kindness? He gets into ridiculous situations because he will never turn his back on someone in need. The Yorozuya is just a business to justify what Gintoki would be doing anyways: what little he can to help the people right in front of him. Because Gintoki is only alive because of that kind of kindness. Even in the episode that started this thought train; Hasegawa has lost everything, just like Gintoki (and partly because of Gintoki) so Gintoki shows up to at least be his gambling buddy. And when push comes to shove Gintoki will fight to the death for a stranger on the street.
Has anyone noticed that Gintoki never asked Shinpachi or Kagura to join the Yorozuya? That ten years passed after the Joi war before he met them? That after Otose saved him, he ran the Yorozuya alone, wielding his kindness like penance for the longest time? Like kindness was the wage he needed to pay to keep living. His kindness was like suicide, his self-sacrifice so rooted in him Shinpachi needed to beat it out of him.
Gintoki didn’t ask Shinpachi and Kagura to join him. They hamfistedly forced their way into his life. They saw his kindness, the principle he lives by, and wanted to follow him. And they made the Yorozuya. And Gintoki kept caring about every person who passed through the Yorozuya’s doors. Every person he met in the street. And his connections grew.
Now he goes out to gamble with Hasegawa, and knows to bet on the first horse Hasegawa rules out. Because to Gintoki Hasegawa is a guy who drives away luck. And to Hasegawa, Gintoki is the weird guy who keeps showing up, no matter what. And I think that’s beautiful.

attention!!!!
anime / manga / animanga fans who have not yet seen or read World Trigger. WATCH IT. READ IT. IT IS GOOD AND FUN.
Some highlights:
THE KIDS MAY BE SOLDIERS BUT THEY ARE SAFE. How??? You might ask. Go on and watch it to find out ;)
Wholesome x shonen x found family
MC is not overpowered and have humble beginnings, knows that, and finds a way to work with what he has.
NO BULLIES. The kids/agents here are nice & give constructive criticism rather than be rude to our not-so-physically-powerful MC.
As a seiyuu fan, the abundance of characters = more seiyuu appearances! Guess-the-seiyuu is fun to play!
First bullet point because after watching a ton of shonen with kids in the frontlines, it is refreshing and so so nice to see a story where they can fight AND BE SAFE during battle.
WE NEED THE NEXT ARCS TO BE ANIMATED T^T

This episode was hilarious.
Yor got isekai'd

Yor and Anya are too funny, i never know what to expect with them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her face this whole episode. If it wasn't for the promise of a personal chef I think Anya would have just stayed in her room the entire episode.
Then there's poor Loid.
He can't catch a break.
Tumblr media
I want him drawn like this for the rest of the show.
Despite his distress at everything Yor does he still never questions her. Gotta love him for that.

Delicious In Dungeon Marcille Faces: Episode 2
I couldn't help it. Our little adorable girlfailure is just too goofy and silly to not want to share the dozens of different faces she dons in just a single episode. Endlessly grateful to Trigger for all the expressiveness, and to Marcille's VA (Hayaka Senbongi) for delivering a near perfect performance.

Dandadan Episode 11 Review - Jiji Goes Hehe
In a previous review, I did mention that Momo is the Shounen MC, but female, Okarun is the heroine, but male, and Aira is the rival, but female. The new character Jin Enjoji, or Jiji, joins in the reverse shounen story gender tropes as the fourth angle of the growing love square. Usually in shounen stories, there would be several girls who develop a crush on the MC, ranging from various types. For example, if Momo was male, Okarun would be the shy girl in love with the male MC and Jiji would be the girl that’s the total opposite of the shrinking violet. That’s essentially how Jiji is introduced throughout the episode—the total opposite of Okarun and a possible love interest for her. Don’t worry, though. Momo only has eyes for our male heroine.
Tumblr media
Speaking of Jiji, he’s certainly…an interesting character. From a general standpoint, he’d be a divisive character, but for me, I find him hilarious. He’s entertaining, but doesn’t seem to go too overboard. He sort of reminds me of Kei from Oblivion Battery but less obnoxious. While he likes to clown around, Jiji does know when to shut up and not make a joke of everything like how he explained his situation to Momo about how the house he moved into was cursed and caused his parents to be hospitalized and how going to five different spirit mediums caused three of them to end their lives. He’s staying at the Ayase’s because Seiko is a spirit medium and is someone he’s acquainted with. The only downside is that Seiko’s not the one going to exorcise the cursed spirit; that’s Momo’s job. Haha, typical shounen MC mentor laziness.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jiji probably means well, but he definitely is a source of emotional conflict for Okarun in this episode. Throughout the episode, he starts feeling jealous of Jiji as he’s everything he’s not and the fact that Momo used to have a crush on him back in elementary school. He was worried about whether Momo would want to spend more time with Jiji and not with Okarun because of his good looks and entertaining personality, but also failed to see that Momo doesn’t really care about a guy’s looks and that she was already over him a long time ago. The incident with Taro helps Okarun realize that he’s in love with Momo. I really did like the parallels of how Taro fell for Hana and related it to him. The day Momo stepped in to help Okarun from being bullied was when his gray world became full of color. It feels poetic in a way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Regarding the animation, I can see why Science Saru was THE studio for Dandadan. The reason is because I don’t think other animation studios can animate Jiji’s movements as fluidly as they can. Jiji is a very bombastic character—he moves around A LOT and is also expressive. You need a studio capable of handling all that movement without missing a beat and is able to handle his expressions too without stock footages. I also loved the moment where they were running after Taro. It was really nice to look at.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Did I mention Dandadan has good voice actors? Because it does! Jiji is voiced by Kaito Ishikawa and he does an AMAZING job with him. Like, I know Ishikawa has a history of voicing comedic characters, but Jiji is practically an amalgamation of all of his comedic voice acting and taking it up a step further because of that experience. Not only that, this is the second time I’ve watched an anime where Kaito Ishikawa and Natsuki Hanae have interactions! The first was where both played the leads of my favorite anime of all-time, The Case Study of Vanitas and the second is Demon Slayer’s third season where Ishikawa voiced one of Hantengu’s clones (the green one) that attacked Tanjiro. In addition, in English, Jiji is voiced by Aleks Le! He’s clearly a rising star in the voice acting world as he’s been getting good roles in both games and in anime! If you’re not familiar with him, he’s the ENG VA of Sung Jinwoo from Solo Leveling! Though, his first major role was the comedic Zenitsu from Demon Slayer, so it does feel as if he’s going back to his roots of being comic relief. I quite like Aleks a lot, so I am a bit biased in my opinion of his acting. Also, Taro is voiced by Tomokazu Sugita and Hana is voiced by Fumi Hirano. They’re both veterans and the casting still amazes me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Other than that, there are some small details in this episode I liked like Seiko giving Jiji more food every time he compliments her, Muko standing up for Okamomo and Okarun organizing his shoes and placing them in the corner before chasing after Momo and Jiji. These sort of small details really give life to the story and to the characters!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But yeah, that’s it for this review. The Dandadan fandom has been a war zone ever since the beginning of December due to all this art and racial drama that does feel a little too overblown. I won’t get into much about it as YouTubers talk about it more concisely than I can ever possibly do. Since then, it has been a mess, but I did my best to not get too involved in the drama and just ignore it as much as I could. Speaking of which, this is the penultimate episode! It’s crazy how Dandadan is finished next week! It feels like a waste because I want more! I hope that they announce a second season! What are your thoughts on this episode?
