I saw someone on reddit a while back say that Toriyama wasn't a very good storyteller because he's more interested in jokes and I haven't stopped thinking about it.

I can't imagine people who think like that practice critical analysis or creative endeavors, least of all creating comics, and I'm going to explain what I mean using one of my favorite panels from the manga:

Toriyama introduces two new villains who were only mentioned off-screen as being much stronger than Raditz. This one panel both introduces these characters and tells you right away:

The smaller of the two is the superior, based on his attire, the fact that he's in the foreground, and he's the one eating

The superior is callous, both because of his dialogue and the fact that he is the only one eating, despite his meal being larger than he is

The superior is monstrous based on what he is eating (my favorite set of details) -- at first glance some kind of insectoid creature, but upon closer inspection:

This is an intelligent, technologically advanced life-form that used both a gun and a ship

2. Neither Saiyan is damaged, telling us even advanced alien weaponry does not harm a Saiyan (but Vegeta's armor is scuffed while Nappa's isn't, implying there was a physical if not futile attempt to stop him)

3. The arm is still bleeding, implying this kill is relatively fresh

4. The gun is next to the body, implying that Vegeta sat down on this person and starting eating them right where they died

5. There is a second body in the background that is significantly smaller despite being very nearby, which may imply that Vegeta is eating the adult but did not spare the child -- and if you're really into parallels,

6. There is smoke in the background, Nappa is sitting on inorganic architecture, and the ship is on it's side, making the sixth most brutal detail that these two beings were fleeing from the saiyan attack on some kind of community, and not only did Vegeta not allow them to escape, he also punished them for trying to by EATING the one in charge.

Like what do you mean Toriyama isn't a good storyteller. This is a Debut Panel. He tells you how scary this new villain is without having to say anything at all.

prosekai au where everything is absolutely the same except niigo, instead of being a music circle, is a fanfiction writing-ish group. kanade is a writer, mafuyu is her beta reader, ena makes fancomics based on kanade's fanworks and mizuki makes trailers for upcoming fics. and basically that's it. niigo lore but everything revolves around them being wattpad ao3 users

I feel so bad for ATSV animators imagine you animate an entire Gwiles scene for the trailer and few weeks later they tell you to add more details and you think you can just animate them on the already existing scene but no they tell you that you have to animate the whole scene all over again cuz they didn't flirt enough in it 😅

I am ok in team red building at a low key moment or at her moms orphanage or on a mission during the :D we won the caper atmosphere or another date or in a place she actually decided for herself since as much as she loves team red it was very much their slight nudging that got them that building + her saying that if she knew a bit more she'd find a place she wanted to call home so new home or accepting red building as hers as well

I usually think more of who kisses first and I usually lean towards carmen needs to kiss him first since the ball to turn the relationship romantic official is in her court

80 percent chance on a mission/after/before because of their busy bees ways but the amount of times they manage to squirrel away a little privacy for themselves is truly wild so it's not like all of team red will be in on it

-> carmen just kinda getting caught up on the close atmosphere before a mission and giving him a kiss before they start which has them all ! But professional enough to talk about it later

-> carmen giving him a kiss after the mission where he asks if they can go on a date now or because he's getting caught up in the close atmosphere of having everything done so she closes the gap making it a mutual kiss

-> gray getting hurt and carmen being relieved ala tangled kiss

-> VERY RARE OPPORTUNITY TO KISS DURING A MISSION WOULD BE COOL BUT THEY TEND TO HAVE REALLY HANDS ON NEED FOCUS MISSIONS SO 😭

thinking about Frieren and Dungeon Meshi today and just remembered seeing a post/comment or two saying that people have no reason to compare the two stories since they have nothing in common except being non-isekai fantasy. different tones, different pacing, different themes, etc.

i don't know if whoever said that were dunmesh manga readers or not, but i kinda assume they were making judgments based purely on however much of the anime was released at the time, because i think about how similar these stories are a LOT, actually.

[spoilers for the dungeon meshi manga below, and a little bit of frieren manga]

i think that's a pretty fair assessment to make based JUST on the "prologue"/setup arc leading up to the red dragon. while some of the main themes are very in-your-face, others are still being woven into the characters and established much more subtly, and we don't get the full weight and payoff for that early work until later into the story.

Frieren establishes its identity within the first episodes and never drastically deviates from that first impression. on the other hand, dunmesh takes its time to build its foundation...but instead of using it as groundwork to build a house above, it then leads you into the depths of the dungeon below.

the stuff about conflicts between long-lived and short-lived races seem like just jokes/banter and a touch of political worldbuilding, in the beginning, but that tension is absolutely central to both Marcille and Kabru's arcs. both Frieren and dunmesh are about elves facing their (near) immortality in contrast with the brief mortality of their companions.

I think about the ways Frieren, with a thousand years of life behind her, carries the memories of those she's outlived along with her and all the ways she emulates them to preserve their lives and values. I think about the way Marcille, with a thousand years of life ahead of her, clings so tightly to the people she holds dear and fears the future she sees beyond their deaths.

I think about the way Serie talks about training Flamme on a whim, casually dismissive of short human lifespans. I think of the way Kabru resents the way elves treat short-lived species like children and fights so desperately for their agency and right to speak on the same level as the rest, fully informed of the dangers that threaten them all instead of being left in the dark.

beyond that, too--you can really feel that these series come from a place of love for the genres that inspired them. dunmeshi's speculative biology for the monsters and the ecosystem they're a part of, the exploration of how and why different races get different "stat" bonuses (dwarven constitution, half-foot perception, tall-man versatility, elven/gnomish magical affinity), the side comic about "Grease" as a starter spell--all obviously come from deep knowledge and affection for D&D and/or similar rpgs.

meanwhile, Himmel gives thoughtful weight to doing "side quests" for paltry rewards--they help because they're heroes, but they accept scraps and useless items for rewards because no one wants to feel pitied or indebted to anyone. he says they "went the wrong way" if they find the stairs to the next floor in a dungeon, because the "right" way is to explore every nook and cranny first before you progress. it would be very easy to mock how annoying fetch quests are, or make the dungeon bit a pure joke--but this is a story that relishes the process and the journey of it all, down to the smallest detail and silliest quest.

flashbacks to Falin being achingly kind and gentle, and also strange and awkward. flashbacks to Himmel being blindingly heroic and noble, and also vain and goofy.

these are both stories about the weight of death and loss and the things we'll do to see our loved ones one last time, when we are destined and doomed to outlive them. they're about the joy of the journey even when it's painful, thriving on silliness even when things are "serious," and loving the people in your life knowing you will lose them, and how you carry them with you when they're gone. dunmeshi is heavier on the comedy side of things, but both have their fair share of emotional gutpunches, and their themes and values mirror each other.

all this to say, these stories are holding hands.

I can't do a full ranking yet because I haven't finished my rereads (the last time I properly read Fall of the Beasts was years ago, so my opinions have likely changed), but I can attempt to rank the first arc!

1. Rise and Fall (they really gave us everything in this book, and the writing stayed impeccable throughout. This one has been my favourite for years.)

2. The Evertree (incredible and engaging from start to finish. If I didn't have such a strong emotional attachment to Rise and Fall, I would probably put this one in first. The showdown at the titular Evertree is hands-down one of the best moments in the series.)

3. Blood Ties (everything about this one was fantastic, and it felt way longer than it actually is, which I love.)

4. Hunted (this one was so mysterious and dark and good, I want to eat it like candy. Shane would have made it even better.)

5. Fire and Ice (Rollan and Aidana subplot was amazing and still makes my heart hurt to think about. Continuity errors and inconsistent characterization bumps it down a notch.)

6. Against the Tide (it was great, as most of them are, but it felt almost too short. I'm also not big on Tui T. Sutherland's writing style, so that affects my rating. At least there was less caps lock than WOF has.)

7. Wild Born (a good book and solid introduction to the series, but I found the others to be more memorable, personally.)

I will say that I'm absolutely loving part one of Fall of the Beasts so far, so those would be high on the list if I were to do a full ranking. I'm in the middle of Broken Ground right now, and it is so good, just as good as I remembered!

Part two of Fall of the Beasts (which I may be calling Fate of the Legends in A Revised History of Erdas) will probably be at the bottom of the barrel. I hope to be proven wrong, though!
