"A Pawprint in the Snow"

On a chilly winter morning, an old dog named Max sat by the window, his gray muzzle resting on his paws. Once full of life and energy, Max had grown slower with age, but his love for his owner, Emily, remained as strong as ever. She had adopted him as a puppy twelve years ago, and they had been inseparable ever since.

Max's favorite memories were of their long walks in the woods, chasing squirrels and rolling in the leaves. But Emily had grown busy with her new job, and their walks became shorter, then stopped altogether. Max didn’t mind—he waited patiently by the door each day, wagging his tail, hoping she'd have time for him.

One evening, Emily came home later than usual, her face tired and distant. Max trotted over, his tail wagging furiously, but she barely glanced at him. She set her bags down and sighed, “Not now, Max. I’m too tired.” The words stung, but Max stayed by her side, laying his head on her lap, offering silent comfort.

As the weeks passed, Emily’s visits home became sporadic. Max spent his days alone, staring out the window, his heart heavy with loneliness. The vibrant world outside, once their shared playground, now felt distant and unreachable.

One snowy morning, Max’s frail body gave out. He collapsed near the door, where his leash hung unused. Emily returned home to find him lying there, his breathing shallow. Tears streamed down her face as she knelt beside him, whispering apologies she could never fully express.

She wrapped Max in his favorite blanket and carried him outside into the snowy yard. For the first time in months, she took him on a walk, holding him close as the snowflakes fell. Max looked up at her, his eyes filled with love and gratitude.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, Max took his last breath in her arms. Emily buried him under their favorite tree, a place where they had shared countless moments of joy.

Though Max was gone, his pawprints remained, etched not just in the snow but in Emily's heart. She vowed never to let her busy life overshadow the love and loyalty of those who gave her everything.

Once upon a time, an injured squirrel fell out of a tree. Rescued by her human neighbors, she was fed and serenaded with music and the buzz of Formula 1. After being transported to a Malibu rehab facility, she was able to roam free with other squirrels like her and was eventually nursed back to health – living happily ever after 🐿️

Outerworld, based on a poem written by Luis Levy, tells the story from the squirrel's point of view.
