Hello and Good day!

Today I got to move the chicks from the grow out pen into the run 🐣🐥🐔 thought I'd share their journey so far :)

We chose to purchase chicks, rather than hatch as we don't currently have a rooster. To be perfectly honest, I'd like to test out with eggs from another source to be sure I know how to incubate properly before getting into that venture. (Though selling or trading chicks with the neighbours would be fun someday!)

They get put in a large tub, with a chick waterer on stone and wood shaving bedding. I leave the box they came home in the tub for shade from the heat lamp. They are so stinking small at this time and cuuute!

Later when they got bigger we upgraded to what we call the grow out pen. It used to be a trellis for one of the raised bed but got repurposed along with a few other things. No sense in wasting perfectly good material.

I started switching to grain and seed feed around 6 weeks of age. Mixing 50/50 chicken feed grain till the last bagw as empty. I also started sharing kitchen and garden scraps around this time. Mostly leafy greens and occasional bread slices.

They are always up and going! Even around 2 am lol

Today's moving day! Their a little skittish still when I snapped this photo and I expect they will continue to be for a few days yet as I try to remain fairly hands free for them. I'll probably move the lamp in tonight, but after awhile more, ill be removing it entirely. Tomorrow I'll be giving them a half tray of fresh lentil sprouts as a treat and they'll be getting some garden clean up too :)

Chef Auguste Soulffle, age 58 (1938-1996) Cooking fire burned down his kitchen with him in it

Amadeus Wolfgeist, age 53 (1754-1807): Heart attack brought on by stress and rage after his performance bombed

King Rory MacFrights, age 46 (764-810): Killed in a joust

Dr. Sylvester Potter, age 85 (1900-1985): Died of old age

(Bonus headcanon: He is the grandfather of the Three Sisters from the second game. They inherited their interest in plants from him, an interest they kept long after they died from an illness)

Mortimer “Morty” Wilson, age 29 (1928-1957): Crushed by a falling stage light while trying to film his masterpiece

Polterkitty, age 6 (2012-2018): Stray cat hit by a car and then enchanted by Hellen Gravely to gain extra powers

Ug, age 35 (25000 BCE-24965 BCE): Eaten by a T-Rex, the same one he is now possessing (since this is the Mario universe, humans and dinosaurs lived around the same time here)

Clement “Clem” Abernathy, age 38 (1948-1986): Hit his head and drowned in the sewers

Pharaoh Serpci I, age 31 (3051 BCE-3020 BCE): Commited suicide as part of a ritual to stop a sandstorm from ravaging her people

Nikki, Lindsey, and Ginny Hawthorne, age 15 (1972-1987): Stage they were performing on caught on fire due to a magic trick gone wrong

(Bonus headcanon: Nikki is the one with long pigtails, Lindsey is the one with the ponytail, and Ginny has the short pigtails)

Captain Fishook, age 70 (1920-1990) Pirate shark killed in a duel with Jonathan “Johnny” Jones, who took over his crew

Johnny Deepend, age 24 (1967-1991): Swim trunks got caught in a pool filter, causing him to drown

Gloria “DJ Phantasmagloria” Townes, age 26 (1973-1999): DJ equipment malfunctioned, electrocuting her

Hellen Gravely, age 40 (1978-2018): Commited suicide after she was suddenly rejected by her lover. After her death, she adopted Polterkitty, became obsessed with King Boo, and brought together the rest of the staff to help defeat Luigi.

After the events of the game, the ghosts (except for Hellen, Polterkitty, and King Boo) all got a second chance, and they now work at the Last Resort, which has since become a legitimate hotel.

Garden update July 21, 2024

Time for a garden update:) I managed to get out before it was over 95*f lol

Cucumbers are doing mighty fine, there is a small carrot batch up towards the front

Top left, a sunflower, towards us. Was supposed to be beans. Unknown pest and sun done em in.

Top right. Squash, only 1 fruit sp far. I am trying to I get seed from it. Towards us. Eggplant that needs a desperate trim.

Don't mind the mess of the next 2 photos. It's a work in slow progress.

Assume you need to get the spelling at least somewhat close, and if a character has multiple names, only one counts. Also, if a character doesn't have a canonical name, I'm sorry, but "that guy's wife" doesn't count.

For reference, if you can name the 9 members of the Fellowship, the eponymous Hobbit and his 13 dwarf buddies, 3 prominent women, and the guy who runs the Rivendell B&B, that's 27 characters right there. And you probably also know the name of a dragon.

For further reference, Tolkien Gateway has 637 (!!) pages dedicated to Third Age characters. (Don't click that link until you've voted, of course)

One of my favorite things about Tolkien's writing is that he has a very specific, recurring trope. For lack of a better term, I'm dubbing this the Tolkien Wife-Guy.

This is mainly obvious in the Silmarillion, but Tolkien loves to write couples where the man is a notable individual- nobility, commits a great deed, or both- but the wife is at least equally notable, if not more beloved or powerful. Manwe is the king of the Valar and Eru's main representative in Arda? Everyone loves Varda more, and Melkor fears her more than his own brother. Elu Thingol is the king of the Silvan Elves? His wife is Melian, whose Girdle is the magic that keeps Morgoth's forces at bay. Beren is a chief among the Edain, who befriends animals and survives one of the most nightmarish places in Beleriand? His wife is Luthien.

Even in Lord of the Rings we see this occur, though the couples are on more even footing. Tom Bombadil is... Tom Bombadil, but Goldberry is the River-daughter, and Tom adores her above everything else, and the hobbits are completely taken in with her when she's their host. Similarly, while Celeborn is a mighty lord among Elves, Galadriel is one of the only Noldor in Middle-earth who saw the Two Trees, and her hair inspired Feanor to make the Silmarils, not to mention her own accomplishments in the war against Morgoth. Aragorn is the king of Gondor and Arnor, but Arwen is the Evenstar of the Elves, the descendant of three(?) different royal Elven lines. And Faramir becomes the Steward of Gondor and is one of the noblest men alive, but Eowyn killed the Witch-king, so you know. She got the grander moment for the saga.

But with (most) of these couples, we never get the impression that the man views his wife as Less-Than, or as a junior partner. Thingol is the main exception to this in how he dismisses Melian's counsel, and that's made out to be his foolishness within the text. Otherwise, Manwe treats Varda as his co-ruler, Beren never tries to downplay Luthien's achievements, and I'm pretty sure most of Tom Bombadil's dialogue is about how gorgeous Goldberry is. It's really sweet.

All of these examples really testify to how much Tolkien loved his wife. People rightly point to Beren and Luthien as the prime example of that, but I think you can find it in these other couples too. Even though Edith is mainly known to history as Mrs. Tolkien, it's evident to me that Jirt saw her as a whole person worthy of admiration outside of being his wife.
