I read the first issue of Animal Castle years ago, really enjoyed it, then promptly forgot about it in the rush of everything else going on. I', so happy I got the chance to check out Volume 1 from the library because wow what a good comic!!!

Animal Castle takes its basic setup from George Orwell's novel Animal Farm. In both Orwell's classic and in the given comic, common barn animals rule over themselves, and a violent hierarchy eventually asserts itself. Where the comic differs from the novel is in the common animals' reaction to their tyrant ruler. Animal Castle follows the animals' quest to win rights from their authoritarian ruler through peaceful means like protests, art, and humor. It's a tricky path, and Volume 1's pessimistic end implies that it will be a long, hard road for them.

The art of the comics speaks for itself - the linework and coloring are absolutely gorgeous, expressive and beautiful and terrifying and simply wonderful stuff. The character work is also top-notch - I was not expecting to like Ceasar as much as I did, but man what a classy bunny (if this changes in Vol 2 please no spoilers !!!)

This comic is great, and I think Vol. 2 is available now? So I'm gonna go read that and I encourage others to do the same.

I love the style in that comic so SO much but unless I’m directly referencing a drawing I just can’t apply it (yet). Even in these pages there was a lot of like. Struggle.
