honestly, how do any (or all!!!) of your OCs feel about Gordon? You have a lot of interesting, multifaceted takes on how Gordon is perceived in the HL2 world, and I’d love to hear how your peeps fit into that
wishing for all is like a monkeys paw on your part, cuz i have quite a few, god speed with reading all this o7 ill be going in order as they appear on my master post of ocs, ill pu tthis under a read more since its soooooooo long
Brock Fuentes: previously knew of Gordon before the rescas, got piss scared of him during the res cas when he refused to help gordon open some doors becuz he was to scared to leave his hidey hole so gordon man handled him and slapped him around a bit. so by the time of half life2, hes had people around him who believed in the messianic nature of gordon which is quite the departure from his memory of both the up-tight asocial man he heard about and the violent forceful deranged man he met. if he were to see gordon acting much the same now or hear about people having that pure image they had be shattered hed feel a bit vindicated
Richard Montague: He roomed with gordon before the rescas and thought he was a pleasant roomate if not somewhat intimidating due to his serious and minimal socialization, but by the time the rescas happened, they were amicable sorta friends. At most during the rescas he might have heard that gordon was killing swathes of soliders which would be terrifying knowing how much he was struggling to survive in comparison. BY half life 2, gordon is mostly a memory and he had been mostly innundated from resistance culture, having spent most of his time working for the combine using his background in biology to help with xen infestations, so he heard more propoganda against gordon freeman if anything. he doesnt really believe it but it sticks around mentally and mixes with his knowledge of fondness for gordon. eventually when he teams up with the resistance after fleeing the city, he hears more about gordon from their point of view occasionally, which sits better with him, but ultimately, what the perspective of gordon is doesnt matter much to him since hes more focussed on not dying. then when gordon comes back and people start talking about how he acts its concerning and sounds unreal so he doesnt really believe its actually gordon unless he sees him for himself since it sounds so unlike the man he knew.
Jill Pobst: she sadly doesnt make it out of the rescas, but she knew gordon during it, at that point he was still mostly mentally present, and was still learning the curve of combat so she helped him out before her death. he was just a lab coat who was less of a coward than most and didnt talk much
Isiah Poole: he worked at black mesa before the rescas, his sector of work was far removed from sector C, but he wouldve heard of gordon thru the newspaper. post rescas, gordon wouldnt have likely come up where isiah is existing in anyway that would have a permanant impact on his psyche
Knipex: as a borrower in black mesa, they arent super clued in to the personnel and any drama that arent posing a direct threat to the colony and post since theyre with isiah most of the time, they also arent going to hear much about gordon post rescas
Timmy Ridgewell: grew up under the combine so for most of his life, he wouldve heard only the propoganda about gordon and the resistance in general but as he gets older hell start running into the resistance and slowly hearing more about gordon as a messianic figure, but he is rather ressiitant to the concept since it just doesnt make sense, so hes more of a distant saint figure than some greater power who can actually help anyone, and hes almost sore about gordon coming back in hl2 and being real, but also disappointing his friends by being less than stellar personality wise
Bagels: Behind the guise of just a cat, Bagels is actually a controller, and harbors a great deal of resentment towards gordon for destroying everything the nihilanth had built to escape the oppression of the combine, and is smug over everything gordon did failed to protect his people in the long run, but still is willing to work alongside the resistance so that the combine is toppled, the enemy of my enemy is my friend and all
Angus and Ed: also only knew minimal second hand knowledge of gordon through the newspapers, and have been living in xen since the rescas (and one of them is just dead) so their knowledge of gordon never updates with time
Galvanizer: just a lil rollermine, isnt sapient, nor has audio receptors and never meets gordon to form an "opinion" of him
Fred Otten: didnt read the newspaper or socialize much with people who wouldve known gordon while he worked at black mesa so he didnt know gordon really existed, and post rescas, he is willing to whore himself out for the combine for a variety of reasons, so even if he doubts one man could do anything that big, hes willing to accept the propoganda idly however and when gordon does return hes very motivated to kill him for the reward and any rewards unofficially that he can et his hands on even if he is terrified of what gordon is capable of based on the years of propoganda hes internalized
Robert Briggs: he knew gordon through Richie, met him a couple times, he thinks hes somewhat rude sometimes but ultimately kinda harmless and nice in his own way. he doesnt survive the rescas so his opinions of gordon never changes
V-8751: during the rescas it knew that gordon exitisted and that he was a high priority target, but never ran into gordon and was isolated from people who would know of gordon for most of its life post rescas even during hl2 before it made friends with cicada who both has their own experiences with gordon and access to the rest of the knowledge and opinions of the rest of the vorts thrut he vortessence, so learning about what happened to the nihilanth whats happened to him the variety fo opinions about gordon, kinda confuses it and its just a lot fo conflicting information so since he isnt important to the life its living, V-8751 so it sorta lets all that information settle without much concern, at best is glad he killed the nihilanth, and regards the way fletcher treats him as kinda strange
Fletcher Lamb: spent time in a variety of places before leaving the purview of the combine, so heard a variety of rumors about gordon before he left the sphere of influence that gordon has reputationaly, so she holds him in regard as a sort of icon but only loosely treats him religiously, she treats his name the way that people treat a piece of candy that supposedly keeps a computer system running, it comes up when things get rough and is kept quietly in place to be effective but isnt a main focus of his life until something goes wrong
Cicada: was nearly killed by Gordon and had many friends killed by him as well so is rightfully afraid of and dislikes gordon, even if they knows in teh past present and future that gordon frees them, but because of thier hyper connection to the vortessence, much of their personal opions are muted and mixed with the wider consensus on gordon (and most things) in a way that can be confusing and more uncertain than most vorts are perceived as
Felix Kessler and Alexis: prior to hl2 as metrocops, they both didnt really care about gordon as a figure in propoganda since he wasnt anything that could further thier careers since eh wasnt real, at best Alexis was annoying enough about his job to learn as much as he could about gordon to better identify what he thought could be secret organizational code talk which did result in innocent people getting killed or punished, during hl2, they are both very annoyed that they werent put on the case to kill gordon, and felix in particular is vying to be deployed near gordons predicted path since of the two hes the less despised of the pair
Antoine-Valery Veilloux: travels around a lot so has seen a lot of different interpretations of gordon and has even met people who knew him, so he doesnt really buy into him as a god or saint like figure, but knows he did a lot of the things people claim he did, just not as bombastic, thinks he was a bad ass guy but uses his name as a expletive for fun (ie, freeman damnit, oh for freemans sake)
Damned Crows: didnt pay much attention to anything the human residents of white forest say outside something they find funny, but once gordon is on his way to white forest, they pick up on his arrival and mostly watches since things seem tense. from a distance they can tell that gordon is respected by most if not all the humans of white forest but also they think hes kinda scary and theyd rather not tangle with him
#ponderingradioactivedecay#oc: jill pobst#oc: richard montague#oc: cicada#oc: lazar#oc: alexis#oc: damned crows#oc: felix kessler#oc: antoine valery veilloux#oc: fletcher lamb#oc: v 8751#oc: robert briggs#oc: fred otten#oc: galvanizer#oc: angus#oc: ed#oc: timmy ridgewell#oc: bagels#oc: knipex#oc: isiah poole#oc: brock fuentes#ask#ive excluded the ocs that are gordons family memebers and family frineds since they dont make it to the second game and would have#generic opinions about him tbh lol

Learning how to analyze stories is practical because humans process the world through stories.
Every news article out there is telling you (selling you, generally) a story. So is every advertisement and corporate website and startup business. So is every politician - the story of what's wrong with the world and why they're the ones who can fix it and how. Teaching is often more effective when it's done through stories - just look at educational media and children's media.
There are studies showing that reading books makes people more open-minded, less biased, more empathetic, and more accepting of people who are different from them. There's some really fascinating writing and research on storytelling as emotional technology - storytelling as a tool for understanding others, or catharsis, or a ton of other things. Narrative therapy is a very powerful modality of therapy where you heal by changing the stories you have about yourself and the world around you.
When they say that history is written by the victories, that's because history is fundamentally a story - the stories we use to understand the past and the people in it. Stories are very often what tell us who is worth saving and protecting - and who isn't. Religious beliefs are stories - competing stories of where we come from, why we're here, and what will happen to us in the end.
Humans communicate through stories constantly, whether explicitly or not. And it's by far usually not.
Teaching kids to analyze literature (and even just having them read it) is vital to developing their ability to thoughtfully, critically, and fully understand the world around them, imho
The further I get from high school the more surreal English class seems. Deeply strange part of our culture. Literary analysis is fun and interesting to read but like. You shouldnt make people who don't want to do it do it. It's insane
#not trying to inject any of this with a hostile tone btw in any way esp at op#I'm just Passionate about storytelling as a quintessential human way of understanding the world#not pulling citations#except that you can google the reading = empathy studies because that's totally a thing#I know they've specifically conducted studies on Speak and on the Harry Potter books#also Wonderworks by Angus Fletcher is a fascinating book on storytelling as emotional technology#anyway learning how to analyze storytelling makes you a lot better at say figuring out how politicians/advertisers/businesses/etc#are trying to manipulate you#and how#me

Finally got back to my favourite local café for some studying! I've had tonsillitis for the past week so I've just been comfort (/low-key hate) reading Julia Quinn books since last sunday.
Finished up some practice questions, caught up on my daily vocab in one of my books (still haven't started making the flashcards I specifically bought for this month though rip ㅠㅠ).
Today's audiobook read was Upright Women Wanted by Sarah Gailey and I had some fun with it! It was super short which I'm not complaining about and it was a really good introduction to the future western genre! A pretty solid read overall, and I'm interested in picking up more from Gailey in the future!
I also started a new physical read with Wonderworks by Angus Fletcher, and now I want to reread the Iliad lmao.

Propelled chiefly by last year’s London production, I have written a (rather) long form piece to do with Rebecca the Musical. Though focusing mainly on this eventual and heavily expectant premiere of the English production of the musical, discussion relates also to the original and other iterations of the show, and musicals more generally, too.
The piece is anchored by the central theme of insatiability while looking in turn at:
the process of tracing the evasive histories of character representations and theatrical productions over many decades – including also flickered and largely forgotten records of the play and opera forms of Rebecca, and the “apparitional”, equivocal lens that queer female sexuality is handled with across large spans of time
decoding evidence of sparse, if periodically rather dire, female queerness in theatrical, musical contexts – guided by the disciples of dykeish dissatisfaction in the musical’s character of Mrs Danvers or the story’s primary author of Daphne du Maurier herself
considering what it means to exist as an audience member responding in situ to (principally female) performers with thrilling voices, both in and outside an auditorium, and the delicate but frequently under-discussed predicament of queer female diva devotion.
Take a look if you're interested!
In further expansion of photographic documentation of each of the examined stage-based, theatrical iterations of Rebecca, more images are presented below.
Discussion originates from the existence of the 2023 English premiere production of Rebecca the Musical at the Charing Cross Theatre in London, where cast principals included Kara Lane as Mrs Danvers (alternated by Melanie Bright), Lauren Jones as I (the new Mrs de Winter), and Richard Carson as Maxim. Photos by myself.
The first stage production of Rebecca arose much earlier, concerning the 1939 play by the same name at the Queen’s Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue (now The Sondheim Theatre). Daphne du Maurier herself wrote its script. Margaret Rutherford played Mrs Danvers, Celia Johnson was the new Mrs de Winter, Owen Nares appeared as Maxim. The Queen’s Theatre was bombed in 1940 during WWII at the time of Rebecca’s occupancy, becoming the first theatre in London to be hit by a wartime bomb, and bringing to an immediate premature close the show’s successful run - and highlighting earlier associations of this story's connection to tumultuous tales and dramatic events in histories of it's staging, as the attempted primary stagings of the English musical iteration would later return to.
Photos from this first theatrical, London production include those by Angus McBean from a periodical spread entitled ‘Mystery and Murder in Stately Cornish Home - Dramatic Moments of Du Maurier’s “Rebecca.”’, published in The Sketch (vol. 190), May 1940.
The play also then appeared on the road in America, and subsequently on Broadway in 1945 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre for a fleeting 20 performances; and of this entity, record remains even more scarce. Cast principals included: Florence Reed (Mrs Danvers), Diana Barrymore (the new Mrs de Winter), Bramwell Fletcher (Maxim).
The next and last distinct adaptation of Rebecca to appear on stage before the musical was the 1983 opera production devised for Opera North, with music by Wilfred Josephs and libretto by Edward Marsh. It toured the UK before being revived briefly in 1988 and never seen again. Cast principals included: Ann Howard as Mrs Danvers, with Gillian Sullivan and later Anne Williams-King as the new Mrs de Winter, and Peter Knapp as Maxim.
Finding these few, historic photographs in obscure newspapers or consulting original scripts and librettos, for instance, in libraries and archives during this effortful and active treasure-hunting felt special and rewarding. But possible reconstruction of these stage iterations in the present day is only incompletely possible, because of reduced ease of access to or apparent remaining visceral evidence of a visceral art form.
The frustration in trying to seek out these apparitional traces not only foregrounds the importance of maintaining accessible, comprehensive primary records within the theatre, but mirrors also the act of trying to seek out records of queer female sexuality across history in works of literature, cinema or theatre, as a process typified by a similarly effortful navigation of apparitional erasure. This facet connects with the notion that consideration around Rebecca entangles with a web of insatiability or dykeish dissatisfaction, a web that stretches from this erasure and liminality of representation, to character constructions within the work – including of its infamous housekeeper, Mrs Danvers, to contextual backgrounds like those of the story’s primary author itself, Daphne du Maurier.
The entity of Rebecca, then, across its many themes, productions and decades, is uniquely useful in the way it can in turn encompass and facilitate explorations of these many facets – being capable of simultaneously holding consideration of these expansive webs of documentation, erasure or dykeish dissatisfaction that can be found lurking in historical margins, as well as also the contrasting luminous energy that can be produced in the present in association with the musical, as physical audiences interact with and respond to the material of the show and its performers within theatres in real time. These considerations have transferrable applicability beyond this singular context of this particular show to more general notions of theatrical pieces and the practice of theatregoing, too, as they foreground the question of how audience members respond to, process, and interact with shows; and, as a matter of far less common discussion or scholarly writing on the subject of diva devotion, how female fans specifically navigate the complex predicament of queer, female, performance-driven high regard.

THE WORLD'S GREATEST DETECTIVE: ROUND 2
Alright folks, it's time for round two! This round brings in the final members of the competition not in the first round. Let's take a look at who figured out all the clues to make it to round 2, and who got stumped.
Sherlock Holmes VS L: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's most famous character was no match for the King of Cat and Mouse it seems. L managed to beat Sherlock handily, and now goes on to face Batman in round 2.
Mystery Inc. VS Angus McDonald: It seems 5 heads are better than 1. Mystery Inc. easily outmatched the boy wonder in round 1. The Scooby Gang will be moving on to face Columbo in round 2.
Agent Hank Schrader VS Agents Scully and Mulder: Even though Hank has taken down some of the most dangerous men in New Mexico, he wasn't able to compete with a duo that has gone up against threats of humanity itself. Scully and Mulder will be moving on to round 2, going up against Goro Akechi.
Benois Blanc VS Professor Layton: It seems that Layton's keen eye was able to prove itself better than Blanc's. Along with that, it seems his win gave him the confidence he needed to come out of retirement and announce a new adventure! But he's still got a competition to get to, and next round he's up against Connor.
Sam and Max VS Hercule Poirot: Just like Sir Doyle's detective, Dame Christie's own famous inspector was bested by the mad duo of Sam and Max. The two of them will go on to the next round and face off against Shuichi Saihara.
Basil of Baker Street VS Detective Pikachu: Even though the electric mouse might have been the cutest in the contest, the eclectic mouse pulled ahead in the competition. Basil will continue on to round 2 and face Jessica Fletcher.
Nancy Drew VS Nick Valentine: Nancy pulled ahead against the synth and snagged her spot in round 2. Her opponent next round will be Jessica Jones.
Dick Tracy VS The Hardy Boys: Even with all his gadgets and gizmos, Dick Tracy still lost against just a couple of brothers. The Hardy Boys will find themselves up against Auguste Dupin in round 2.
The round 2 polls will be rolling out shortly. Remember, vote for the better detective, not who is your favorite!

Damned Crows: a sapient crow living at white forest who enjoys fucking with the resident humans, in particular a man named Magnusson
Rafał Lewkowicz: A citizen in city 17. His job is keeping the advisors being held in the citadel healthy. He has a developed an obsession with the advisors after having been shown visions of worlds and knowledge far beyond the comprehension of humans and longs to understand them
The Tor: Once a community leader among other vorts under the nihilanths reign and forced to be a commander during the rescas, he now roams without access to the vortessence with ex-farmers due to a teleportation accident in a portal storm

Part 3
While I wouldn’t call family the main theme of Phineas and Ferb, it is still one of its core themes.
Our main family is a clear example of family being more than blood, and how the creators are interested in exploring multiple facets of the family even beyond the scope of the household.
Of course the titular characters Phineas and Ferb are step brothers and best friends. An extremely heartwarming dynamic. But the real heart of the show is Candace and her complicated feelings towards them. Their mom's frequent absences and supernatural obliviousness to her son's activities drives the plot, flavored by her worry for Candace. Their father's eccentric nature rounds out the family. While there is conflict aplenty, most notably between Candace and... almost everyone, there's a fair share of it among everyone else. Ferb is occasionally caught in the crossfire of Phineas's perpetual obliviousness, their dad once got in hot water with their mom by forgetting their anniversary, Lawrence once thought Linda was overreacting to something he had build, and of course when Linda DOES see the boy’s (bigger) activities she’s usually not pleased. We believe easily that they really do love each other deeply, while not being a completely ideal family.
The fact Flynn-Fletchers are a blended family DOES escape the notice of many causal viewers, due to how rarely "Step" anything is brought up and how the kids non-Flynn-Fletcher family is not present, it does help add depth to the family. Ferb and his father are British immigrants, and thus, Ferb has family and traditions that Phineas and Candace are new to. Ferb's relationship to Phineas and Candace is a bit different, though no less precious to them, than their relationship to each other, and is the same in all the ways that really matter. And a lot of how well this family meshed together is illustrated through the extended family.
Lawrence has at least one younger brother, whose married with 6 kids and the focus of a two part episode, where Phineas and Candace meet Ferb's cousins and uncle for the first time, and where, we see a different side of Lawrence with his and Adrian's sibling "rivalry", Eliza and Candace developing a friendship, and of course the Peles and Beckhams doubting how "British" Ferb really is. Ferb also has a Scottish cousin, and a "Aunt Maura and Uncle Angus" who he keeps in contact with, but who it seems Candace is generally unfamiliar with. But despite this unfamiliarity, it’s clear that the Fletcher and Flynn extended families see the other side as extended family too, even if not quite in the same way as they see each other.
Both sets of grandparents treat all 3 of the kids as their own. Candace is shown to be just as much a moody teen to her biological grandmother as her step-grandmother. Phineas may be unfamiliar with Grandpa Reg’s vocabulary and requires Ferb to translate, but at the same time both he and Ferb are treated as grandsons when it comes down to it and both admire him. The grandparents themselves are rather fleshed out characters, who appear in multiple episodes.
They also have an aunt on their mom's side whose marriage is a plot point in an episode. Their maternal grandmother has a twin sister who appears once. Despite the minor role these characters play they really flesh out the whole Flynn Fletcher family, highlighting that Lawrence and Linda themselves are siblings and how their own sibling relationships function which could be shown to parallel their own children. Adrian and Lawrence may be "competitive", but Phineas and Ferb aren’t in the slightest. Tiana and Linda seem to get along really well (at least now), but Candace is constantly irritated by her brothers. And Lorraine may just be a one off gag, but it does show that plotting sibling duos run in the family.
Not to mention how many of the family members are shown to have lives of their own, we meet Bob Webber first as Candace and Jeremy's boss, Betty Jo Flynn has a roller derby rivalry with Hilda Johnson, Reginald Fletcher was a daredevil in his youth, and Linda was a pop star.
And of course I can’t forget Perry. Perry is a cherished member of the family, even if the Flynn-Fletcher’s don’t know the real him. While Perry doesn’t actually spend a whole lot of time on-screen with the Flynn-Fletcher’s it’s clear he cares for them deeply. There are several episodes, (not to mention the movie), dedicated to how much Perry means to the boys and vice versa, even if their relationship is predicated on the false assumption of Perry’s lack of sapience. Not to mention, the Candace and Perry relationship development, Candace and Perry care for each other too, even if their relationship looks different from Perry’s with the boys. She reacts calmly to the news he’s not what he seemed, he rescues her from Doof’s self-destructing lair, and she spends all day looking for him after she thought she chased him off.

Actually, now that I have thought it over, I think it would be better to add live action TV adaptations to possible candidates for the 40, but for characters from Live Action TV Shows.
I would include...
Jon Snow from Game of Thrones
Shawn Spencer from Psych
Michael Scott or Jim Halpert from The Office
Leslie Knope or Ron Swanson from Parks and Rec
Edmund Blackadder or Baldrick from Blackadder
Neil from The Young Ones
and Gilligan from Gilligan's Island
What live action TV Shows would you pick?
There were so many shows that it was so hard to pick! But I did my best:
The Addams Family (1964): Gomez or Mortica
BBC Sherlock: John Watson (I know there are some who don’t like this version, but I like the idea of John becoming even more badass and getting a leg up on Sherlock).
Good Omens: Aziraphale or Crowley
Merlin: Merlin of Arthur (I’m just imagining Arthur being surrounded by modern technology and calling it “sorcery!”)
House MD: House
Gilligan's Island: Gilligan
M*A*S*H: Hawkeye or Klinger (Look, the man KILLED IT in those dresses and was committed!)
Star Trek: The Original Series: Kirk or Spock
The Nanny: Fran or Niles
The Golden Girls: Rose or Dorothy or Sophia or Blanche (Listen, for so long I have wanted to see Niles from The Nanny and Sophia go toe to toe in an insult competition, so this is the closest I can get!)
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air: Will Smith
Knight Rider (1982): Michael Knight or KITT (Can you imagine three of the people waking up in a room only to find a talking car with them as well?)
Dexter: Dexter
Fringe: Olivia or Walter or Peter
Stranger Things: Steve Harrington (The babysitter needs to be prepare) or El
Doctor Who: Tenth Doctor
Supernatural: Sam or Dean or Castiel
The Good Doctor: Shaun Murphy
Breaking Bad: Walter White or Jesse Pinkman
The Handmaid's Tale: June Osborne
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Buffy
Roswell (1999): Liz Parker or Max Evans
Fleabag: Fleabag
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: Miriam Maisel
Orange Is The New Black: Piper Chapman
Psych: Shawn Spencer
The Office: Michael Scott or Jim Halpert
Parks and Rec: Leslie Knope or Ron Swanson
Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Jake Peralta or Ray Holt
MacGyver (1985): Angus MacGyver
NCIS: Leroy Gibbs
Criminal Minds: Spencer Reid
The X-Files: Dana Scully or Fox Mulder
Full House: Jesse Katsopolis or Danny Tanner or Joey Gladstone
Corner Gas: Brent
Downton Abbey: Charles Carson
Monk: Adrien Monk
The Queen's Gambit: Beth Harmon
Columbo: Columbo
Murder, She Wrote: Jessica Beatrice Fletcher
