Blackness Castle is a 15th-century fortress, near the village of Blackness, Scotland, on the south shore of the Firth of Forth.
It was built, probably on the site of an earlier fort, by Sir George Crichton in the 1440s. At this time, Blackness was the main port serving the Royal Burgh of Linlithgow, one of the main residences of the Scottish monarch. The castle, together with the Crichton lands, passed to James II of Scotland in 1453, and the castle has been crown property ever since. It served as a state prison, holding such prisoners as Cardinal Beaton and the 6th Earl of Angus.
Strengthened by Sir James Hamilton of Finnart in the mid-16th century, the castle became one of the most advanced artillery fortifications of its time in Scotland. A century later, these defences were not enough to prevent Blackness falling to Oliver Cromwell's army in 1650. Some years after the siege, the castle was repaired, and again served as a prison and a minor garrison. In 1693, the spur protecting the gate was heightened, and the Stern Tower shortened as a base for three heavy guns. Barracks and officers' quarters were added in the 1870s, when the castle was used as an ammunition depot, until 1912. The castle was briefly reused by the army during World War I. It is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument, in the care of Historic Environment Scotland.
Because of its site, jutting into the Forth, and its long, narrow shape, the castle has been characterised as "the ship that never sailed". The north and south towers are often named "stem" and "stern", with the central tower called the "main mast".

Henry ‘Chips’ Channon: The Diaries (Vol. 1), 1918-38, entry for 21st September 1923
Friday 21st September
Duntreath Castle¹
We motor eighty miles every day to Ayr races, usually in a downpour of rain. Ayr is my favourite meeting, it is so detached and different from the others. Oddly enough it is fashionable especially when the Scottish Derby is run. The members of the Caledonian Club appear in pink coats and top hats, Lord Bute² has a private tent and Lord Lonsdale's³ party arrive in yellow phaetons with outriders. Today⁴ we went to Buchanan⁵ to the Montroses'⁶ for tea. [It is] a glorious position for a castle with a wonderful view of Loch Lomond. The castle itself has been rebuilt recently with the old stone. The exterior has a look of Glamis,⁷ but the interior is frankly barbarously Victorian with paper lampshades. The Duchess is stately and very beautiful, though easily 65.⁸ She was a Graham and is an old friend . . . will she be my aunt I wonder? There were several masculine-looking daughters about, including the one married to the Cameron of Lochiel,⁹ with a flock of perfect children all in kilts and safety pins. The Duke showed us relics of the Great Montrose¹⁰ . . . but conversation was difficult, only grouse and the weather being mentioned.
At Blanefield in Stirlingshire, seat of the Edmonstone family.
John Crichton-Stuart (1881-1947), by courtesy Earl of Dumfries until 1900, when he succeeded his father as the 4th Marquess of Bute.
Hugh Cecil Lowther (1857-1944) succeeded his brother as the 5th Earl of Lonsdale in 1882, and squandered the family fortune. He was known as 'the Yellow Earl' because of his fondness for the colour. He was the first President of the Automobile Association, which adopted the colour for its livery.
Presumably Saturday 22nd September.
Buchanan Castle, near Drymen in Stirlingshire.
Douglas Beresford Malise Ronald Graham (1852-1925), by courtesy Marquess of Graham until 1874, when he succeeded his father as 5th Duke of Montrose. He married in 1876 Violet Hermione Graham (1854-1940).
Glamis Castle, in Angus, Scotland, seat of the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne.
She was 69.
Colonel Walter Cameron of Lochiel (1876-1951), 25th Chief of Clan Cameron, had married Lady Hermione Emily Graham (1882-1978) in 1906.
James Graham (1612-50), 1st Marquess of Montrose, was a hero of the Royalist side in Scotland during the Civil War. He was hanged and his head placed on a stake in Edinburgh, but he was rehabilitated after the Restoration.

Rugby League World Cup Final
The Rugby League World Cup is an international rugby league tournament contested by the top national representative teams. The tournament is administered by the International Rugby League and was first held in France in 1954, which was the first World Cup held for any form of rugby football.
Old Trafford will host the double-header final for the Rugby League World Cup.
Located in Manchester, England, the ground has a capacity of 74,310 which makes it the second-largest sports stadium in the country behind Wembley Stadium.
The famous stadium is the home of football team Manchester United, but with the English Premier League pausing for the FIFA World Cup in mid-November, it is available for use.
Due to this scheduling, no other Rugby League World Cup games will be played at Old Trafford earlier in the tournament.

Toa Samoa v Kangaroos Rugby League
Gallagher Australian Kangaroos Head Coach Mal Meninga has named a 19-man squad for the Rugby League World Cup 2021 Final against Samoa at Old Trafford on Sunday, November 20 (AEDT).
Meninga has made no changes to the 19 players selected for last week’s semi-final.
“I am very happy with the attitude and performances of all 24 players throughout the World Cup but keeping the same team for the final is a bonus,” Meninga said.

Australia beat Scotland 84-0
But you can only run what’s in front of you. With proud parents Evan and Beck watching in the stands, Cleary played Scotland as the violin as the kangaroo scraped off ring rust for a first win over Fiji in the second biggest win in Australian Test history. Only demolishing Russia at the 110-4 World Cup in 2000 sits behind such a superlative effort by Mal Mininga, Cameron Munster running into disarray with five assists in the process. A four-pointer pass to Ado Carr With his first three passes from Cleary, a simple cut-off ball opens the gates almost from the start. Steeden’s first Scottish touch was a kick-off reception, as the ball was delivered straight to Australia, as was largely hinted at. Jack Wheaton was flowing easily minutes later – Cleary again throwing the last pass – leaving little doubt that a cricket score was imminent. Cleary almost joined them with his own four pointer after that, but Angus Crichton beat him to the Scottish confusion that followed Cleary’s high kick. It took the 24-year-old 13 minutes to make his own attempt as he broke off a half-mock, lying new teammate Campbell Graham in between. Addo-Carr and Wighton both treated themselves to a second assist as the Kangaroos kept the clock ticking on their way to a 40-0 lead at halftime. Joined by James Tedesco on the scoring sheet 50 seconds into the resume, Ben Hunt follows exactly on the next set as Cleary’s conversions took longer between Australian attempts than in actual play. Cleary continued to hit the diversions on fun as attempts by Graham and Matt Burton gave him ample opportunity to do so, and his personal score totaled 24 in the process. Only a final fore pass from Cameron Monster prevented Cleary from running on the second attempt and matching Jones’ record of 27, but other attempts by Graham and Penrith’s teammate, Issa Yu, kept the points flowing. Scotland’s best chance to upset the scorers came in the last minute, as a crowd of 10,276 spectators hoped to strike a brave heart. Liam Martin stripped the last unlucky Scottish ball carrier to kill that and left nothing to be said for one of the most dominant performances in kangaroo history.
