Iriel de Fiscarde, the last anguissette before Phèdre. Married a Kusheline duc to prevent a civil war in Terre d’Ange. My headcanon for her is that the great source of agony/joy in her life was when she fell in love with her husband's sister.
Vibes of Like Water for Chocolate, you see it?

Kushiel’s Legacy GIF sets || Iriel de Fiscarde
“The last living anguissette I know of was Iriel de Fiscarde of Azzalle, who went willingly into a marriage of servitude to the Kusheline Duc de Bonnel to avert war between their Houses. A matter of D’Angeline politics.”

5) How often do people (not family members) tell you they love you?
8) Are you a jealous person?
5. My bf tells me multiple times a day. This is my first relationship so it’s never happened in my life with any other partner, and with friends it’s every so often but only with my best friends
8. Yes, but I’m trying to work on it
thank you for asking!!

Why did you first pick up Kushiel and what age? Then telling me why you love it.
Ha! I actually have record of the year I read Chosen and Avatar which are both 2006, so I assume that’s true of Dart as well. All things considered, this was my senior year of high school. My stepmother is a big book person and has quite the home library, and I found it on her shelves. I think the graphic drew me in. A topless woman with an extravagant back tattoo?? Yes please! Also my ex was a bit of a masochist, so when I read the concept of Phedre as an anguissette, I was quite intrigued! The concept drew me in. It was pretty dense for me back then, with all the politics and all the exposition, but I quickly fell in love with Phedre.
So why do I love it? Phedre. I love Phedre so much. Like the world building is neat and all, and the ‘love as thou wilt’ society was really refreshing as a young wlw and where in other worlds the sort of queer culture the book uses would be this taboo oppression the characters would have to fight against, it’s just taken as casual stuff. Phedre only stands out because she’s the only anguissette and less what that means for her.
But I had been reading for years about the warrior heroines, which I love. But this helped draw me back into the idea that warrior women are not the only ways for women to be strong, compelling, or even powerful. Phedre is seen as just a courtesan, but she’s still powerful in so many ways that are taken for granted and I adore all the ways she is acknowledged for that and the ways it is explored.
I don’t think I appreciated Joscelyn well at the time. When I first read it he mostly annoyed me or I felt a bit indifferent to him. Like I appreciated him and didn’t hate him as things went on or anything, but I wasn’t there for him. Now I appreciate him all the more and really, really need to do that reread of book two. XD
(This is a thing I’m doing with friends that others are welcome to join or take bits and pieces for themselves.)

So, now that I finished Kushiel’s Legacy series
It’s probably the most extreme change I ever had - I went from loathing to adoring them and am genuinely distraught to leave this wonderful world behind. (I’ve read Carey plans to rewrite Dart from Joscelin’s side and I don’t care if it’s redundant, I want it!)
I still have some issues with some of the takes on sexuality in it (the whole character of Anafiel Delunay, for one) but I ended up loving the characters and the adventures and the world so. The second trilogy gave me a lot less hurdles (I get Imriel a lot more than I will ever get Phedre - I love her but she is very alien to me - and connection helps with a narrator) but the first trilogy had some amazing amazing highs that make me very confused as to whether I prefer the last book of the first or the second triligy as my favorite.
Anyway, without further ado:
Favorite Book: Either Kushiel’s Avatar or Kushiel’s Mercy. They are both conclusions of their trilogies and heartbreakingly epic and utterly romantic and so very hopeful in their own ways.I think I will go with Avatar because its epicness is truly out of another world (no other book goes quite from such utter lows as the hell of Darsanga to such highs as the Name of God) and because this was the first time in this series I truly fell insanely and utterly for every part of a book.
Least Favorite Book: Least favorite is pretty easy: Kushiel’s Chosen. It’s by far the least favorite of the bunch, with both Phedre and Joscelin behaving in ways I do not care for for a large chunk of the book, and the plot just didn’t grab me. The ending sequences are epic, Joscelin storming La Dolorosa singlehanded is amazing, and it was fun to visit La Serenissima, so it’s not all a wash or near it, but there is no question this is the one I will only reread parts of.
Favorite male character: You cannot make me choose between Joscelin and Imriel, sorry. Both intense as hell, damaged, great fighters, stubborn, loyal, a little insane (OK, a lot insane), in love with amazing women blah blah blah. At this point, it’s really down to whether you prefer blonds or brunettes, pretty much. OK, fine, Joscelin, because his only ever being with Phedre and for Phedre his entire freaking life is sexy as hell. Also, I am not into even mild BDSM in the bedroom.
Favorite female character:  Sidonie. Yes, yes, I know, I am probably the only one to not pick Phedre, but while Phedre is smart and amazing and with big heart and savior of the world etc etc etc, I wanted to thump her for a large chunk of book 2 and I never felt that way with Sidonie, plus I get Sidonie the way I do not get Phedre (I am, thankfully, very far from an anguissette and those personality traits or relationship needs.)
Most hated character: The Mahrkagir (sp?). He was beyond monstrous. Phedre, being Phedre, might have been able to feel sorry for him. I could not.
Character you didn’t think you’d love as much as you do now:   Phedre. I started out Kushiel’s Dart rolling my eyes at her and thinking she was insane and unlikable and now - I love her and root for her and happy she got her happy ending and just - she’s a joy. (I still think she was abused and groomed as a child, but I understand why she never saw it that way and never will.)
Character you were supported to like but didn’t: Anafiel Delaunay. Hi there, groomer and abuser! If you buy two ten year olds and train them for the oldest profession, there is a term for you and it’s not “beloved mentor.” He never gave them a choice, not really, and while Phedre might have always ended up that way due to the whole chosen of Kushiel way, her fellow pupil was actually repulsed and did it only out of brainwashed gratitude to their mentor, who never bothered to figure it out. He makes me ragefully sick. Runner up - Melisande. I don’t think we were supposed to like her, but to find her interesting, and I did neither.
Favorite OTP: Imriel x Sidonie. They are perfect for each other in every way - from romantic to brainwise to sexual to to to to. Also, there is so much faith and hope and love and angst and desperation and gritted teeth honor there, I love it.
OTP you didn’t think you’d like but did: Phedre x Joscelin. Mainly because I started out disliking Phedre and not getting how she could ever commit to anyone. But they won me over during their time in Skaldia in Dart and I was devastated to see the ten steps back in Chosen and then in Avatar they were sheer and utter perfection and continued that way from then on. Even their very basic incompatibility (she needs to be hurt/he can’t bear to hurt her; he wants nobody else/she has needs he cannot satisfy) somehow made them all the more shippable.
Other OTPs you like: Most of them. Ysandre x Drustan is fun, Eamonn x Brigitta, Ti-Philippe x Hugues, Maslon x me. OK, I kid on that last one, sort of.
OTP you do not like: Anafiel x Alcuin. I am sorry, that whole set up was grooming. I never got into Deirdre and her love for Imriel either. I mean, good for you, lady, but she was pretty darn boring.
Favorite secondary character: Maslon de Lombelin. He could definitely be a protagonist in another novel. He is a mirror of sorts to Imriel and I was so happy they actually became friends that it was one of my favorite scenes in book 5.
Most disturbing scene: All of Dursanga in book 3. I want to scrub my brain. But more specifically the stuff that happened to Imriel (when he mentions some of it in books 4 and 5, I - I - OK, I thought I’d never have to read about after book 3) and the havoc it wreaked on Phedre’s sense of self that she loathed what she was made to do yet the kushiel’s chosen part of her somehow loved it despite the horror and that was the greatest horror of all. And of course Joscelin having to sit there and watch innocents get abused and murdered, watch the woman he loves more than life get abused and tortured, and do nothing. Yikes.
Angstiest scene: Either Joscelin throwing Phedre at Mahrkagir’s feet as “tribute” in book 3 or bespelled Joscelin fighting Imriel at the end of book 6. Poor Joscelin, he has a bad time of it.
Most romantic scene: Joscelin and Phedre rediscovering each other and love and finding healing in that oasis in King’s Avatar. Runners up are the scene in the cave in Kushiel’s Dart where Phèdre and Joscelin sleep together for the first time, or the bit in Dart where he duels Selig for her and prepares to kill Phedre to save her from torture and himself at the same time because he is not living without her or Imriel and Sidonie before he has to sail to Alba in book 5 to marry Dorelei or on book 6, when Sidonie comes to herself after the spell or in book 5 when Sidonie claims Imriel in front of the whole court.
What you wish for the characters after the story ended: .I got what I wanted. I just want to read more about it.

I wish we’d gotten to see Phedre patronizing Mandrake House. You know those adepts would absolutely love to test their skills on an anguissette. Missed opportunity there IMO.

Kushiel’s Legacy GIF sets || Anafiel Delaunay
“She is a comely child,” I heard at length spoken in a bored voice; a man’s rich tenor, cultivated, but with the lack of modulation that only nobles can afford to display. I know this now, because Delaunay taught me to listen for such things. Then, I thought merely that he disliked me. “And the incident you describe intrigues. But I see nothing to intrigue me overmuch, Miriam. I’ve a pupil in hand these two years past; I’m not looking for another.” “Phèdre.”                                         My head jerked up at the command in the old Dowayne’s tone and I stared at her wide-eyed. She was looking at Delaunay and smiling faintly, so I transferred my gaze to him.                                    Anafiel Delaunay sat at his ease, canted languidly, elbow propped on the arm of the chair, contemplating me with his chin on his hand. He had very fine D’Angeline features, long and mobile, with long-lashed grey eyes flecked with topaz. His hair was a pleasing shade of ginger, and he wore a velvet doublet of deep brown. His only adornment was a fine chain of chased gold-work. His sleeves were russet, a hint of topaz silk gleaming in the slashes. He stretched his well-turned legs out lazily, clad in rich brown, the heel of one highly polished boot propped on the toe of the other. “Elua’s Balls!” He gave a bark of laughter that startled me. I saw Jareth and the Dowayne exchange a quick glance. Delaunay unfolded himself from the chair in one smooth, elegant motion, lowering himself to one knee before me. He took my face in both hands. “Do you know what mark you bear, little Phèdre?” His voice had turned caressing and his thumbs stroked my cheekbones, perilously close to my eyes. I quivered between his hands like a rabbit in a trap, longing. . . longing for him to do something, something terrible, fearful that he would, rigid with suppressing it. “No,” I breathed. He took his hands away, touching my cheek briefly in reassurance, and stood. “Kushiel’s Dart,” he said, and laughed. “You’ve an anguissette on your hands, Miriam; a true anguissette. Look at the way she trembles, even now, caught between fear and desire.”

Characters from Kushiel’s Dart 1/ - Phèdre nó Delaunay
Thus did I enter the world, with an ill-luck name and a pinprick of blood emblazoned in my gaze.
...
Delaunay unfolded himself from the chair in one smooth, elegant motion, loweing himself to one knee before me. ‘Do you know what mark you bear, little Phèdre?’
...
‘Kushiel’s Dart,’ he said, and laughed. ‘You’ve an anguissette on your hands, Miriam; a true anguissette. Look at the way she trembles, even now, caught between fear and desire.’
...
‘“Mighty Kushiel, of rod and weal/ Late of the brazen portals/ With blood-tipp’d dart a wound unhealed/ Pricks the eyen of chosen mortals.”‘
...
I wanted desperately for Anafiel Delaunay to prevail. He had laid his poet’s hands on me and changed my very nature, transformed the prick of my unworth to a pearl of great price. Only Melisande Shahrizai ever named what I was so surely and swiftly; but that was later, and a different matter.
(From Kushiel’s Dart by Jacqueline Carey)
An anguissette is a mortal chosen by Kushiel to set a balance back in the world. They are marked by Kushiel with a red mote in their eye, referred to as a wound unhealed. They are essentially extreme masochists, finding pleasure in pain. Their function as Kushiel's chosen is to restore balance to the world in some way. They have the benefit of healing quickly.

I’m deep in this 1,000 page book and I thought of you when I came across a name in it I liked, Ysandre, and thought of the names you like that came from fantasy books you’d read. You’d like this book — it’s about a girl/woman marked by the gods to be an anguissette, ie someone who takes pleasure from pain, and she’s raised as basically a sex worker, and gets involved in lots of palace intrigue, including some hella gay shit. If you have the patience for such a long book, it might tickle that old fancy in you of loving long nerdy fantasy books and kink and pervy shit and being hella gay.

Only then did I fully realize that I stood upon the rock of Third Sister, the isle of the Master of the Straits. I raised my gaze to meet that of Hyacinthe, who stood near enough to touch. “Phèdre,” he whispered. I flung both arms about his neck and burst into tears. He felt the same, under my touch. Whatever changes his long ordeal had wrought in him, whatever powers endowed him, beneath it he was Hyacinthe still, my childhood friend, my Prince of Travellers. The scent of his skin triggered more memories than I could count. Before Joscelin, before the Queen, before Thelesis de Mornay, Cecilie Laveau-Perrin, before my lord Delaunay himself… before them all, I had known Hyacinthe. “Phèdre,” he said again, drawing a wracking breath, holding me close. “You said you were sure. You said you were sure!” I lifted my tear-stained face. “I am, Hyacinthe; as sure as I can be. You wouldn’t risk any of us. Should I risk them, when I am the only one needed?” His smile was a ghost of its former self as he released me. “You’re awfully willful for an anguissette, you know. A sickness in the blood, my mother would say.” I laughed through my tears. “I remember.”
