2 projects research of the week

The Hotel Britomart

directed by Dajiang Tai and Nat Cheshire

main points that stuck out to me:

Dajiang Tai

Dajiang Tai explained the experience of staying at the hotel to be a “date with the city”. Importance of texture yet soft and welcoming aspects. it is intertwined with the urban spaces around it to flow together. “ New Zealand's first 5 green star hotel”, the elements in the hotel are made to fit a certain criteria down to details such as water flow and fabric choices. a “Heavy building” made from brick it stands out more compared to the many glass buildings around it, however is is juxtaposed by the glass it seems to “Float on”. 

Nat Cheshire:

first talks about the area the project is in, calling it “the leading edge of Auckland as a city”. textures called, rough, small, irregular. “constellations of windows”. wanted the building to “ belong to this time but  is leading to somewhere new.”  one of my favorite quotes “  They’re intended to be rooms that you can run your fingertips over. “ meant to be a complete shift from the world outside with natural textures and materials. 

my thoughts:

The thing that caught my eye to research this project was the light piece in the bar area as this is similar to the looks I liked and related to my elbow cushion design sketches. the way light can be refracted and played with by the many ununiform shapes and placements of the glass. it give a more earthy and alive feeling to the piece and feels as though it has grown like leaves on a tree rather then been built . I was met by a homely, inventive and a natural meets industrial feel. I loved the natural pieces they placed within the space that seemed classy yet keeping the natural shapes and textures of the material.  I love the use of the many textures done in this way. it feels as though nature has been brought and incorporated inside with out conforming fully to the seemingly geometric and often stale feelings restaurants can present. 

Tū Ana Ngā Pou Angitu

directed by Benjamin Thomason and Angie Frires

main points that stuck out to me:

the use of light and absence of light to create Maori designs shapes, and patterns. the clients wanted the pieces “reflecting the Kawa of Whānau Ora within the pieces, representing their uara in a physical sense.”. the six different Pou are have been designed to reflect the different uara (values). these pieces were to be center pieces for a Hui (gathering or ceremony). the cultural materials and methods were changed to give it a more modern looks, as acrylic and etching had to be used, they were illuminated by LEDs which allowed individuals to change their colors so it could be easier to connect with them on a more personal level. the ability to change the colors allowed to the pieces to contrast or compliment their chosen environments. The Pou all represent different and specific Uaras. these pieces were designed to be a temporary installation piece however the project was so successful they were made into 300 miniature pieces to be shared with the community, meaning now they could be held in your hands.

my thoughts:

this project stood out to me for the amazing detail in patterns and how it stood out in its surroundings. when reading about this project I began to love it even more, it was a way to create a modern and standout version of an important cultural practice. it not only served as a whole Pou to the group but allowed for a more individual connection, so much so that it was made into pieces that could be held and appreciated more closely. the choice color ties to them being able to compliment their environment, the photo of this project at the beach really amazed me and caused me to look for a very long time. it was not only beautiful as it blends yet stands out from the environment but it seems to enhance the feelings and energies of it rather then outshine it. This project did not only stand out because of its lighting design but for the amazing meanings and cultural connections it was able to fulfill.

“I've run most of my life, the usual cross country and athletics at school, then several years in the army with mandatory fitness tests and PT sessions. However, I really discovered my passion about 5 years ago when my friend took me on a trail run in the Manawatu Gorge. It (and she) kicked my a$$, but I was hooked. It was challenging in a different way - the hills, technical footing and views all took my mind off how far or fast I was running and gave the run a different focus. I love exploring and adventuring, and found trail running an awesome way to discover parts of our region and beyond that I would never have normally gone to. Along the way, I realised that being in the ngahere, the bush, was the perfect way to destress, re-set and re-calibrate. Where I work I'm inside all day, functioning in a high stress, complex work environment, requiring communication and interaction on many levels so getting out for a run is essential to my well being. Running has also allowed me to finally find my "tribe" - being a bit of an introvert this is something that took me a long time to do. I have met so many fabulous like minded people through running, many whom have become close friends. While I enjoy the solitude of the bush, running with mates is pretty darn great too! Taking part in events is something that keeps me motivated too as I love the whole deal - the training journey, travelling, sharing the experience with friends, meeting new people, taking photos, the atmosphere, finish line beers (oh, and the run itself, haha)...I've just done @taraweraultramarathon and I'll be riding that high for weeks! Last of all, I really love sharing my running and exploring experiences and hope to inspire others along the way to take that step and give things a crack. "Olivanam" ist eine Theorie, die aus "Al-luban" kommt, was auf Arabisch "Milch" bedeutet, Es scheint zwei Arten von "Oreum Livanum" zu geben, was auf Latein "Libanonöl" bedeutet. In Japan wird es "Nyuko" genannt. Es ist weit verbreitet als Weihrauch verwendet worden, vor allem in religiösen Zeremonien seit der Antike. (Es ist sehr nützlich zum Beten und Meditieren, weil es den Effekt hat, die Atmung zu vertiefen und die Anzahl der Male zu reduzieren.) In der Antike gaben Ägypter und Hebräer viel Geld aus, um von Phöniziern importiert zu werden. Es war sehr wertvoll zu dieser Zeit, und es war fast den goldenen Blick wert. Übrigens gibt es eine internationale Handelsroute aus der Antike, die "die Straße des Weihrauchs" genannt wird. (Dieser Ort wurde im Jahr 2000 zum Weltkulturerbe erklärt.) Weihrauch: Der Weihrauch ist schon lange so wichtig, dass es eine Beschreibung in der Bibel gibt. Darüber hinaus benutzten die Ägypter es, um Schmerzen in ihren H��nden und Füßen in Verbindung mit Zimt zu lindern. Es wurde auch für Verjüngungspackungen, Kosmetika und Parfums verwendet. Darüber hinaus sind die Chinesen Es wird gesagt, dass es entdeckt, dass Weihrauch nützlich ist. Harz und Öl werden derzeit in Seifen, flüchtigen Halterungen in Kosmetika und Rohstoffen für Duftstoffe verwendet. Als ich es zum ersten Mal roch, dachte ich: "Ich rieche es irgendwo." Ich erinnerte mich, dass dieser Duft mit dem Wachs für das Instrument gemischt wurde, das ich in der Vergangenheit verwendet habe. Es ist nicht so irritierend und einfach zu bedienen, und es ist sehr nützlich. Es ist so ein Duft, der das Summen eines kleinen Herzens beruhigt. 2aroma.jpg Dies ist Weihrauch, besonders zu empfehlen.
