EXPLORING THE TEMPORAL FORM

As a starting point in exploring our temporal form Rasmus had been playing around with NeoPixels where he explored how to create wave-like movements through LEDs. He had been successful in doing so and acquainted the rest of us with the code he had used to create the light-waves. However, the light-waves was initiated by themselves (through the code) and were thereby not reliant on any sensory input. Therefore, we still needed to create the interactive aspect by coupling the infrared distance sensor to our code.

We started out by working on a very simplistic level where we tried to outline how to make the speed of hand gestures equivalent to the speed and intensity of the waves created. We figured, that if the sensor registers the initial position of the hand and calculates the time it takes for the hand to get to its releasing point, then this can determine the speed of the movement and thereby the speed and intensity of the wave. In this way, a simplistic calculation would look like this: ‘releasing point’ - ‘initial hand position’ = distance/time. We then talked about how this variable should be used in an if/else statement:  

IF (sensory input > a certain value)

THEN perform activity

ELSE perform no activity

In continuation hereof, Ole acquainted us with how we will benefit from using object-oriented coding and processing in order to obtain our desired interaction. He introduced us to how we can make use of classes and linked lists in order to define and efficiently use the unique data created through interaction:

In the example above (see figure 1) we have created a class called Wave and defined the necessary properties for measuring the speed of the hand movements which will enable us to create waves with equivalent speed- and intensity levels. pos stands for position of the wave’s starting point (i.e. the hands starting point) and vel stands for velocity and defines the speed of the wave. bool stands for boolean and has the purpose of determining whether a statement is true or false. Because the properties in the example above holds zero value, the bol is set to false as nothing is happening.

In the second example (see figure 2) we have created an object called aNewWave which we can then “fill out” with the unique values for each variable created in our Wave class (i.e. pos and vel) which will then be added to our linked list, wavesList. In this way, we can add several waves to the linked list that hold different values and are different from each other - creating a more dynamic and personalised experience for the user. However, in order to move further with creating and exploring the temporal form of our lamp we need to improve our skills in working with object-oriented coding and processing and therefore Ole provided us with some tutorials on this subject. 

These initial coding activities were enlightening in terms of getting a closer perspective on both the temporal form and interaction gestalt of our lamp. Even though it is difficult to relate it to the notion of water and waves, given the lack of a physical form and the clearly exposed technicalities (i.e. the Arduino and the LED strip), we still got a detailed insight into how we can benefit from the expressivity of working with point-lights and use them as stage-communicators. As Harrison, Horstman, Hsieh and Hudson (2012) emphasise: “Although comparatively simple (and inherently one-dimensional), with good design, point lights can be quite expressive. With multiple lights and colors, the design space could be even richer” (p. 1683). For instance it was through this day’s work that we decided on incorporating a twinkle-like stage into our lamp in order to simulate still water and communicate that the lamp is not turned off nor has it yet been interacted with. We imagine that this can contribute to awaken a curiosity for the user and thereby trigger interaction.
