Cool thread on pop art! Doesn't all pop music today somehow unavoidably, unintentionally, reference pop art? The marketing. The visual language. Warhol kind of made the mold, or served as its Min-stradamus, in terms of pop, art and manufacture. He understood things about the future of celebrity, mythos, mass production and identity that we are still catching up to, and trying wrap our heads around today. Decades ago, he got what it took to manage a public persona. The very idea of celebrity excited him. We are living in Warhol's world with selfies, filters, social media, reality tv, 'idol'dom and digital projection of self image. BTS make art. They also ARE the art sometimes. Convening with millions of people on video stream and waxing on snack foods is pop art come alive, in a sense. BTS would have given Andy LIFE!BTS's music and iconography can flirt with food, lightness, fashion, the mundane and the commercial. It also contemplates death, life, legacy, existence, solace, persona, youth culture, impermanence, madness etc. Combining them all, and layering meanings is the essence of pop art This could describe Andy Warhol's ouvre as well. The colours, saturation and contrasts in those teaser clips could be compared aesthetically to Warhol's famous silkscreen portraits. But in philosophy, perhaps, they are even closer. Who knows? We will see! It is certainly exciting!
Damn anon, this was a great ask. I could definitely feel your excitement. My knowledge of art is limited but I do share your opinion that basically we are living in wharhol's world or the world is what wharhol envisioned. BTS is certainly a representation of that, in a way their work, not only their music but also everything associated with them can be understood as a manifestation of pop art, the commercials they make about something as simple as a piece of chicken is perhaps an example of that. I think even kpop as such could be interpreted as a manifestation of pop art, I dare say a bit more than the western industry.

VARIOS ARTISTAS
ANDY WHARHOL AND MUSIC

Conversation
A conversation over s'mores
J, KA's best friend: Speaking of saggy nut sack...
KA: Were we speaking about saggy nut sacks?
J: My marshmallow looks like one.
KA checks, agrees.
J: I took my seminary students to the art museum today for a private tour of their collections, which included a set of polaroids from Andy Wharhol that had sketches of his works on the Last Supper next to a bunch of photos he took of men, their penises, and a few saggy nut sacks.
KA: I'm really looking forward to where you're going with this.
J: It was a perfect discussion about how Wharhol was a Christian, but a very private one, whose work included Christian images. My favorite of his Last Supper pieces has the outline of da Vinci's painting juxtaposed with modern logos like GE and Dove soap. I contrasted that with Matisse who was commissioned to paint a chapel in France, but wasn't a Christian. What is the relationship between an artist's faith and specifically Christian art?
KA: I love that we can go from saggy nut sacks to ontological questions.
J: (mumbles cause her mouth is full of s'more)
