Dom news— a couple of weeks ago, Dom was invited along with his friend Andy Burrows, who is the illustrious drummer with the 00s indie band Razorlight (now reunited with their classic lineup), for an interview with BBC Radio 2’s Edith Bowman, who was sitting in on Jo Whiley's show, obviously to talk about the new Razorlight album Planet Nowhere since that’s just come out. Edith also knows Andy personally, she’s been interviewing the band for the last 20 years, and also is married to Tom Smith from Editors, who is also in a creative project with Andy called Smith and Burrows. So Edith is super casual and comfortable with them, and when Andy showed up for the interview, she mentioned that the original idea was for him to bring his friend and fellow drummer Dom Howard from Muse along: they had been hanging out and watching a film the previous night, and at the end of it, Dom had just gone, you know what, naaaahh; and decided not to come in with Andy the next morning.

I meant to clip that and post it here, since the interview is only available for the next 1 week or so, but my laptop has decided to die so tragically to the point where I could not edit and submit my radio show yesterday (annoying and tragic the way things can suddenly decide they don't want to work when 12 hours ago they were fine). So I am stuck at the moment. Anyway, you lose nothing because there was indeed no Dom present. Or we may have had a question or two about what's going on with Muse right now.

Here's the listen back link for the next few days. If someone else wants to clip the audio the interview starts around the 40-minute mark and ends at 1h10m-ish, they mention Dom around the 44th minute and at the end, where they cracked open a soundtrack vinyl on air and dedicated that to Dom, so there.

Happy 20th Anniversary to Jackson's Return of the King!

In honor of the 20th anniversary of Peter Jackson's Return of the King, I drew my favorite scene in the movie!

Déagol: I caught a fish, Sméag! Sméagol! Sméagol: Pull it in! Go on, go on, go on! Pull it in!

I saw this movie in the theaters when it was released, and I was very excited to see young Sméagol!!! And shocked! I was also very incredibly disappointed because I hadn't read ROTK yet at that point and didn't know Sméagollum died. Very depressing! BUT, I'm glad at least that he didn't die miserably in the films, he finally reclaimed his precious and had a nice big smile, and didn't seem to be in a great deal of pain, he was so focused on the ring. And at least he was alive for most of the film, and very fun to watch ~

This is the order of my favorite scenes in ROTK:

1.) The Finding of the Ring (I really love that we got to see young Sméagol, see what he was like before the Ring, see Déagol and his relationship with him, see the transformation Sméagol went through! Amazing!)

2.) Gollum's Villainy (I just really love when Gollum and Sméagol talk to each other, they're very funny and it's wonderful to see them scheming.)

3.) The Stairs of Cirith Ungol (I LOVE how Sméagollum convinces Frodo that Sam wants the Ring, how close he gets, whispering in his ear, it's delicious~)

4.) Mount Doom (I love when Sméagollum attacks Frodo, it pleases me in many ways, the way he CHOKES him, mocks him! "Sméagol lied"!!! it gives me the shiveries ~ )

5.) Sam's Warning (Sméagollum knowing Sam knows he's up to something, and knowing Sam can't do anything about it, he just SMILES, and leans against the rocks looking so devious and pleased with himself, I love him so much)

6.) The Parting of Sam and Frodo (Sméagollum pretending to be asleep, so cleverly framing Sam, convincing Frodo that he TAKES things! Frodo choosing Sméagollum over Sam, YES!!!)

7.) Shelob's Lair (Sméagollum's clever plan, I love when he mockingly sings to him as he's stuck in the web, and I also love how Frodo wants to choke Sméagollum but stops himself. Sméagol's face when Frodo tells him he has to destroy it, Frodo saying "I have to destroy it for both our sakes", he cares about Sméagol even yet, beautiful!!)

8.) Crack of Doom (Sméagollum attacking Frodo, biting his finger off, reclaming the precious at last! Dancing and overjoyed! He and Frodo becoming one, fighting over the Ring, neither able to let it go!)

9.) Journey to the Cross-Roads (Wake up SLEEPIES!)

10.) Cross-Roads of the Fallen King ("We're not IN decent places..." "Come on HOBBITS!")

11.) Minas Morgal ("Full of... enemies...")

Well maybe Guy FOUNDED Guy Towers and left the helm after he retired. Maybe the reason why he founded it was because he didn't have a retirement plan and had to make money to afford one. Maybe he simply retired from hosting EXCLUSIVELY. All we know for sure is that it's been confirmed that he's retired as a host, and honestly good for him! I hope he has a good retirement.

Mer enrichment

The pair are given puzzles to solve for enrichment, they have to figure out how to open the flap that holds a piece of salmon or, on the harder puzzles, a small piece of scallop. They got taken away for a bit bc dream tried smashing the puzzle with a rock to get to the treats and sapnap was sat back just watching this go down.

They also have no concept of slight of hand so when a guest comes up to dream and makes a playing card disappear he is S H O O K and drags sapnap out of the burrow to see this witchcraft.

They stay at the glass for like half an hour watching this dude make various things disappear and reappear and they're in awe the whole time it's also the longest sapnap has been out of the burrow so there are lots of pictures and videos being taken of them.

Andy: To be honest, that's a rather clever use of a tool to more efficiently achieve a result.

It's been observed before in wild mer species so it makes sense a wild rescue would do it too, like smashing open clams or snails and other crustaceans to get to the meat inside so Dream just used what he was taught to get to the good stuff easily. The handlers weren't too happy tho bc those puzzles can be expensive and if one gets broken the plastic/ whatever it's made of can be dangerous for the mer alsoSo instead dnap get terracotta shells made for them to utilise the behavior.

They finally made the second one! This was my favorite part ~ he pets Sméagol and Sméagol gets so happy!

Then Frodo betrays him and poor Sméagol is all beaten up while the hobbitses kiss and betray him!! He's so sad! He wants Frodo's kisses! :(

The only way to survive the pains is to LET GOLLUM TAKE CHARGE!

I hope Sméagollum and Frodo kiss in the next one hehehe ~

It’s dark outside, and Nicky stares contentedly out of the window into the comforting nothingness of night. His elbow is propped against the arm of his chair, an empty mug on the table beside him, and his fingers pull absently at his bottom lip. There’s a fulsome quiet to the house, a silence filled gently with the soft creaks of wood and stone settling into slumber. He sits and does not think, preferring instead to simply exist in warmth and solitude, vaguely aware that his toes are growing colder in his socks as the fire dies down. 

Eventually he stirs, and crosses to rake the coals of the fire across the grate. The lamps give a satisfying click as he turns each of them off, though he leaves one lit beside the window, a habit born of long years welcoming travelers back home. He pads into the kitchen and checks the heavy lock on the door; pads down the hallway and does the same at the front of the house. 

Nicky climbs the stairs, avoiding the creakiest steps by muscle memory alone, Two doorways stand wide open at the landing, showing neat bedrooms with duvets piled on fresh-made beds. Moonlight tumbles through the windows and onto the plain wooden floors, and Nicky smiles to see the simple welcome he and Joe have made for Andy and Nile. They’re expected, but not by the day, and if experience is anything to go by, will show up tired, bedraggled, and hungry. There’s already soup stowed in the fridge, and Nicky lifts a hand to sniff the faint scent of garlic that still clings to his fingertips.

He pushes open the last bedroom door and steps inside. Joe is fast asleep, sprawled on his stomach, one arm flung out onto Nicky’s side of the bed. His hair is already disheveled, a riot of curls, and one foot sticks out from under the duvet and twitches slightly as Nicky passes. It’s chilly now, away from the comfort of the fire, and Nicky makes short work of undressing so that he can slip under the covers and burrow into the warm cocoon Joe has made.

Joe grumbles slightly, but turns onto his side and gathers Nicky in. “Hmmmm,” he says softly, a question and an answer all in one.

“Shhhhh,” Nicky whispers, which earns him a disgruntled snort – fair, he thinks, since he disturbed Joe’s sleep.  He smiles and presses a soft kiss to Joe’s forehead, and even now, barely awake and with his eyes fast closed, Joe smiles clumsily in response. “Amore mio,” Nicky breathes, filled with a wash of warm affection. He closes his own eyes.  

Outside an owl hoots low, but neither Joe nor Nicky hears it.
