I am quite sure my attempts at understanding the previous decade musically brought me to a state close to aporia. The thought expressed here might be connected with the lack of optimism I currently feel about the world, which the records that the musicians did as the introductions of the era contain. To give you an example – Big Music by Simple Minds does possess a going-back-to-what-we-are-good-at nostalgic ethos, yet there's a feeling they rejuvenated themselves this way. To be honest, Simple Minds' latest LPs get ignored thanks to them being always severely underappreciated, those who have them for their idols caused us to realize what a great group they are. Thus, Big Music does, ha, big stuff for them, but I still feel like they can find more space for improvements.

I’ve been thinking about how special this night was. It was my first time hearing the band live and the last show I attended at Roseland Ballroom before it was demolished in 2014. Although Kerr and company have been touring since 1977, this gig was only their 15th time playing somewhere in the city. 

According to simpleminds.org, they formerly hit both Trax and Hurrah’s in 1979, the Ritz in ‘81 and ‘83, Madison Square Garden and the Beacon Theatre in ‘84, Radio City Music Hall four times in ‘85, the Beacon in ‘91 and ‘94, the Brooklyn Academy of Music in ‘95, and the Beacon again in 2002. 

After their Roseland performance, lead singer/songwriter Jim Kerr dashed off this on the band’s website:

Last show of the North American tour, it was important to go out on a high. Thanks to the audience in New York for giving us more than we had hoped for. I put out a message/rallying cry here on Facebook last week asking for support at this gig. We got it! No doubt about that. Noticed familiar faces in the crowd, people came from far and wide. Across the ocean even. How amazing indeed. Also great to see so many of our old friends in the cities. We have missed you. Thank You!

Sadly, the band hasn’t ventured back to North America--let alone New York--since. Here’s hoping they won’t forget about us for too much longer.

Ny singel med Simple Minds Singeln First You Jump är det andra spåret från Simple Minds artonde studioalbum Direction Of The Heart som släpps 21 oktober.  First You Jump är skriven av Kerr-Burchill tillsammans med Simple Minds mångårige basist Ged Grimes. Det är en klassisk transcendent Simple Minds-hymn, en om tidens ångest och hur vi kommer att höja oss över dem. Videon filmades i juli under soundcheck för Simple Minds konsert i Ancient Theatre Taormina, Sicilien. BACK IN THE BOOKSHOP: THE READYMADE BOOMERANG: CERTAIN RELATIONS IN 20TH CENTURY ART - THE 8TH BIENNALE OF SYDNEY 1990 (1990) • First edition of the incredible (huge) catalogue published to accompany the 8th Biennale of Sydney 1990 "The Readymade Boomerang: Certain Relations in 20th Century Art", held 11 April-3 June 1990 in Sydney across various venues. The eighth Biennale began from ‘a trio of Dada originators’: Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray and Francis Picabia. A large number of artists across generations joined these key figures in Artistic Director René Block’s exploration of the ‘readymade’ in twentieth-century art, which aimed to highlight ‘its invention and pure use by Duchamp, to its resurgence in Nouveau Realism, Pop Art, and Fluxus of the 60s, all the way to new versions by young contemporary artists’. @isitandwonder Ha, for much of my youth, my career goal was to write like Julie Burchill ‘but nicer and with ethics’. ;-) As if that was remotely viable re. Burchill, who was notoriously inconsistent – she lurched from Communist Party membership to Thatcher-worship – and could even be remarkably stupid at times. (I can’t forget a demolition job on Roman Polanski she published in The Face in which she confused some of his films with Bunuel’s. Anyway.) That said, The Boy Looked at Johnny (1978) remains iconic (have you read it?): shrill but gloriously aphoristic, and what an opening: ‘Bob Dylan broke his neck – close, but no cigar.’

‘And I remember wondering if M-I ... could pull off contemporary New York ... They could.’ YESSSS. What a pleasure to meet someone who rates this film too! Back in the late 1980s I was brainwashed by the catty reviews, and so I didn’t watch Slaves of New York for the first time until recently – and WHAT a GREAT surprise. The soundtrack is so right too. Logically, no one should have been surprised that M-I could do it – they and Jhabvala had been New Yorkers for years (and, e.g., they’d already made Roseland). But evidently Ivory making a contemporary-ish NYC film featuring black drag queens, a Jeff Koons-type artist, Steve Buscemi, and Boy George on the soundtrack (right after Maurice!) was more than critics could stand.

Great Time article (ehehee, Morgan on Neil Armstrong’s first step onto the moon: ‘I don’t think they should be doing that’) – and YES, the Mark Lancaster Forster–Warhol connection is what I was thinking of. Lancaster was the first-ever artist in residence at King’s, Cambridge; his studio was even in the old room of Forster’s friends and mentor Goldsworthy Lowes Dickinson. And Lancaster was one half of the gay kiss with Joe Dallasandro in Andy Warhol’s 1964 film Kiss.

I love the feeling that, through Forster, an invisible thread connects the Lancaster–Dallasandro kiss for Warhol with Maurice–Alec’s kiss for Ivory in Maurice 22 years later. In addition, Forster experienced the (pre-Warhol) NYC queer Greenwich Village scene directly in the 1940s; Ivory later nearly met (the very elderly) Forster; and you should see what Ivory says about Warhol. ;-) ‘Only connect’ indeed.

My special affection for Interview dates partly from a much earlier (and, to me, astonishing) portrait shot of Rupert they published 30 years ago which used to be my icon…

A banda escocesa passará pelos coliseus de Lisboa e Porto, a 3 e 4 de maio respetivamente, para dois concertos em formato acústico. Just nu är Simple Minds ute på en bejublad Europaturné (”Back in fashion and back on thrilling form.” – The Times).

Första singeln, Vision Thing, är en självsäker och hymnisk hyllning till livet. Låten är euforisk med sina dunkande trummor, synthwash och det omisskännliga gitarrspelet av Simple Minds livslånga sexsträngade underverk, Charlie Burchill. Vision Thing är en hyllning till frontmannen Jim Kerrs far som gick bort 2019, med text av Kerr och musik av Burchill.

Direction Of The Hearts öppningslåt Vision Thing, sätter tempot för ett koncentrerat album med nio spår.
