Old Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, 1900

Wisconsin architect and printmaker Charles Clark Reynolds (1893-1969) produced this etching of the Door County port city of Sturgeon Bay for the Federal Art Project of the WPA in 1941. Reynolds, who was born in Sturgeon Bay, ran a successful architectural firm with offices in Manitowoc and Green Bay, Wisconsin from 1920-1934. Andrew Stevens, curator emeritus of prints, drawings and photographs at the Chazen Museum of Art at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, made these observations about another copy of the print at the Wisconsin Historical Society in his 1998 exhibition catalog, 150 Years of Wisconsin Printmaking:

The print's title and the notation on the plate that identifies the image as being "Sturgeon Bay 1900" suggest a nostalgic purpose for the work. Instead of presenting the city as it was when the print was made in 1941, he looked back forty years, perhaps by reference to photography, to present if at the turn of the century [as Reynolds himself would have known it as a boy]. As if to reference further the retrospective stance of the work, there is a pencil notation in the print's margin that identifies it as having been printed on antique paper. This retrospective aspect of the work . . . may also reflect some of the historical goals of other projects of the WPA.

Our copy of the print is part of a portfolio of prints from the Wisconsin WPA, and this image is from a digitized version of that print from our digital collection Wisconsin Arts Projects of the WPA, which was made possible with generous financial support from The Chipstone Foundation.

Is there a masterlist of, like, actors and celebrities that have come forward for trans rights?

I know the internet has all sorts of collections of people who've done something messed up and those always depress me but reading about David Tennant being supportive in the face of the UK government and current legislation and stuff really hit me and I'd love to be able to see who else is out there standing up for us and what's right.

If not, here's a list I'm putting together, feel free to add to it or add context in the notes if you want! I'm including celebrities who have affirmed their support for trans family members even if they're not doing other activism. I'm also only listing celebrities I know of, and this list does not in any way endorse any problematic stuff any of them may have done outside of the topic.

HIMYM: Who should be dressed up as who in the breakfast club.

In How I met your mother, when lily is in labour. Robin and Ted decide to tell stories in order to distract her from the pain. In one part, Ted brings up the time, where they were going to dress up as the breakfast club characters for Halloween, but they fail to coordinate their costumes. It leads to all of them dressing up as John Bender (The Criminal).

So, I was wondering if they did actually coordinate their costumes. Which HIMYM member would be which breakfast club member. I decided to go based on their personality and even appearance when they were teenagers. We'll start with the criminal first.

To me, it makes sense for Lily Aldrin to dress up as the criminal. During the times they talk about Lily's past involving her youth, she has had a habit of shop lifting. In the episode, where the gang were arguing who was the badass of their group. Lily's story ended up being true.

The next person we are going to look at is Marshall, and I think that Marshall should've dressed up as Andrew Clark, aka the jock. Now, the times we see teenage Marshall, he doesn't actually fit in and jock as physical appearance. But he's more of the most sportsman like than the other two men. Being raised by only brothers and being seen as the runt of the family. Marshall had to prove his worth, and doing so is through masculinity. He knows a lot about sports because of his dad, with whom he had a close bond.

Robin is next, and hers was a bit tricky. Through her teenage life, she has gone through a lot of phases. When she was being raised by her dad, he raised her as a son in which she learned like hunting, hockey, etc. After the incident involving her kissing her team member. Robin moved in with her mum, where she grew her hair out and dyed it blonde. She became a Canadian pop star. Then she went through a crisis, where she went into her bad girl phase during her Canadian pop star era.

But thinking it so clearly, Robin is doing to dressed up as Claire Standish, aka The Princess. In Canon, Robin is the most well-known and popular due to her career as a journalist. She is loved or hated by women, and men are attracted to her, that she tends to get free stuff from them.

Now, we are going to do Ted, and his is the easiest. Ted will dress up as Brian Johnson, aka The Nerd. This one is pretty self-explanatory. Ted is a nerd by heart. He's into nerdy things like the coin collecting, facts about everything, Star Wars, Renaissance fairs, and many more. While they never say what Ted's report card would've been. It's possible that he probably got As and Bs except maybe P.E.

The last HIMYM member is Barney, and he will dress up as the last breakfast club member, Allison Reynolds, aka The Basket case. Now, having Barney dressed up as the Basket case doesn't make sense. But when you look at Allison as a character, you notice the similarities between her and Barney. They are both pathological liars. They do their own thing, which the others are entertained by. The fact that Allison went to detention because she was bored feels like something Barney would do.

Pro Andreil and Renison are going on a double date. Paparazzi seeing them and taking it way too wrong.

      Next morning, after the not so bad double date Renee forced him to go, Andrew is making breakfast, pancakes with chocolate chips for him and plain ones for Neil, while Neil turns on the coffee machine and feeds Sir and King, who are watching him closely to guarantee they're being treated. Their phones start to buzz, both have their names on notification on social media, even with Neil mainly using it just for work and PR. Andrew ignores it, flipping a pancake while Neil puts the cat food back in the cabinet and grabs two mugs while checking his phone. He leaves the mugs on the counter and starts to scroll, doing his concentrated face, his eyebrows frown and he worries his bottom lip absently.

Apparently the Minyard-Josten Rivalry just exists inside the Exy court and our loved players cultivate an amazing friendship in their personal lives. 

Who would say this big rivalry was just a friendly competition? Well, the Hawkins' goalie and the Dolphin's newer Striker themselves in a cafe with two former teammates! 

Andrew Minyard (25) and Neil Josten (24) two of exy's big names were spotted on a double date with former -and undoubtedly gorgeous- foxes. Josten and Allison Reynolds (28) are known for their friendship and the striker being the face of Reynolds' newest sportswear collection, is Josten being Minyard's wingman with the stylish? 

And, as this wasn't enough for our poor hearts, Renee Walker (29) was also with them! The activist has a long term friendship with Minyard, in Palmetto days even was rumored about a supposed romance between the two goalkeepers, but if it's true or not we probably won't ever know but is painfully obviously that now they're interested in other people, and said people end up 'just' being Neil Josten, top 10 best striker in the world - in his first year as pro- and Allison Reynolds nominated 3th most influential women in the world last month by NYT. 

I think I'm saying for all fans when i say: Good luck for our newest (or at least recently discovered) love birds"

Neil sips his coffee, "The same as you apparently", he smirks, "...Allison".

Andrew looks almost offended, or as much his microexpressions shows to him be, Neil doesn't know if is for saying he's type is women or just Allison in specific, "I take what I said back" Andrew says, "Renee also has a terrible taste".

"Well", Neil takes a bite of his breakfast, he's still in his first pancake, he became a slow eater with the time, "Allison will be pissed when she sees it", he chuckles.

Geralt of Rivia - Multiple pieces of media

I first saw him in The Witcher series, then played The Witcher 3, then started reading the books. I am definitely obsessed with this man. And if I write too much on Geralt, I'm libel to make headcanons or maybe even an entire fic on just Geralt's hair or the way his eyes seem to glow under moonlight. See? Obsession. He is also my comfort character. I go to sleep and imagine running in the woods to this man. What the actual fuck?

Walter Marshall - Night Hunter (2018)

Seeing as how I am currently writing fic about this man, I think it goes to show this is a well-crafted yet moldable character and he can do no wrong in my opinion. Unless he dates Rachel, that's wrong in my opinion. She doesn't even have a last name.

Joel Miller - The Last of Us Games, The Last of Us series

Now I would be remiss to not mention Pedro's portrayal of Joel Miller (and that it solidified his status a my cool slutty daddy). But I must talk about how Troy Baker's voice in the game gave me strong Daddy vibes and gave me my second crush on a video game character after Lara Croft when I was a kid.

Ethan Hunt - Mission Impossible films (1996-Present)

If you know me, you know I have seen every Mission Impossible film since the first came out when I was 9. I was, and will most likely always be, obsessed with these movies. I love the heart-stopping action moments, the raw emotions, and I really like when Tom Cruise almost dies in every movie.

Peter Parker - Multiple pieces of media but I will focus on the films

In 2002, I was 15 and liked the older man that was Tobey Maguire (I was a superfan of his and of Peter). I had a Spider-man trapper keeper for goodness sake! In 2012, I was 25 and I was crushing on Andrew Garfield as a contemporary, someone in my age group. In 2017, I was turning 30 and had a crush on what, to me, seemed like a little boy in Tom Holland (he was over 18 but still). Either way, when asked what my favorite superhero is, I always say Spider-Man.

Bernadine Harris - Waiting to Exhale (1995)

I was 8 when this movie came out and my Momma let me watch it with her. Little did I know, my mother was ready to divorce my cheating father. This character spoke to me and continues to speak to me. I still see my Momma when I watch this movie. She was so badass. And so sexy.

Olaf - Frozen films

Fun fact: I used to collect snowman figurines and snow globes. Knowing this, my young niece made me watch the first film. Josh Gad as an inept snowman who loves the idea of summer is so fucking dramatic that I watched this movie on my own plenty of times. I love him so much and I just wanted to cuddle him.

Castiel - Supernatural (2005-2020)

I started watching Supernatural by watching the live airing of Simon Said, the worst episode of the series some would say. But I stuck around. I wanted to see what the kids on LiveJournal were so excited about. Cue season 4 and this son of a bitch just waltzes in with his wings and his coat and his chapped lips that, to this day, have never seen any moisture. And I fell in love. Fun fact: my dad named his dog Castiel.

Frank Reynolds (but specifically as Ongo Goblogian) - It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

I have artwork in my bedroom over my nightstand of Ongo. This entire episode was gold to me. It was early season 8, I believe. Charlie was doing a Richard Grieco thing, Dennis was trying to get his erotic memoirs made into a Fifty Shades of Grey type thing. Mac was in the duster. Dee was in a smut film. Just golden. But then Frank was this Andy Warhol-esque art collector just doing the most. It was beautiful.

Louise Belcher - Bob's Burgers series and film

Louise, what can I say about this wonderful human that hasn't already been said? Louise is what I wish trauma didn't take from me. Louise likes to slap beautiful people, as do I. She is confused when she likes a boy, and so am I some of the time. And Louise has her comfort clothing item, her hat. I have my froggy robe and my penguin socks. In the latest season that just ended, it was pretty much confirmed that Louise is non-binary, as am I. My fiancee compares me to Louise on a daily basis and I just smile and tell her she's 100% correct because she is. Louise embodies me when I was 9 years old, right before childhood trauma took all of that away and replaced it with an old curmudgeon. I love my sweet Louise and no one can ever tell me that my love is unwarranted.

Christian voters swayed 2024 presidential election, data show

Self-identified Christian voters are being credited with making a difference in the outcome of the 2024 presidential election as data show that the faithful overwhelmingly backed President-elect Donald Trump, according to a new report. 

George Barna, director of the Cultural Research Center at Arizona Christian University, published a report last week highlighting the findings of his organization’s post-election research conducted in the three days following the Nov. 5 election. Data included in the report is based on “extensive interviews with a national sample of 2,000 voting-age adults.” The survey had a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points. 

The main finding from the report is that self-identified Christians helped deliver the White House to Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, who defeated Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris: “Among self-identified Christians, President Trump won a 56% share of their vote. And because Christians represented 72% of the voters who turned out, their support for the re-elected Republican made the difference in the race.”

“Although Harris won a larger share of the non-Christian vote than Trump’s share of the Christian votes, Christians outnumbered non-Christian voters by a more than five- to-two margin—delivering the decisive Nov. 5 victory to President Trump,” the report added. 

The data collected from the Cultural Research Center detailed information about turnout among Christian denominations and certain groups of Christian voters, as well as support for the two major candidates among voters within religious subgroups. At 99%, turnout was highest among the group of voters defined as Spiritually Active Governance Engaged Conservative Christians, also known as SAGE Cons. 

Characteristics of SAGE Cons include “consistent participation and belief in core Christian principles and religious endeavors, plus above-average political attentiveness and participation, possessing conservative political ideology, and a commitment to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.” While the turnout rate did not budge among SAGE Cons from 2020 to 2024, most other groups of Christian voters examined saw their turnout rates drop or remain stagnant between the two presidential elections. 

The exceptions were Catholics, whose turnout rate increased from 67% to 70%, and Integrated Disciples, defined as those possessing a biblical worldview. Sixty-seven percent of Integrated Disciples turned out in 2024, compared to 64% in 2020. 

The turnout rate among those who attend a Pentecostal church was measured at 62% in both 2020 and 2024. Turnout dipped slightly from 66% to 65% among Christians who attend mainline Protestant churches, while a larger decrease from 65% to 59% was recorded among their counterparts who attend Evangelical churches. Fifty-nine percent of Protestants as a whole turned out in 2024, compared to 62% four years ago. 

Those theologically defined as born-again Christians, who are “confident they will live eternally in Heaven solely because they have confessed their sins to God, repented, and trust Jesus as their Savior,” constituted 58% of the electorate in 2024, compared to 64% in 2020. Among self-identified Christians, turnout dropped from 64% to 56%. 

In the 2024 election, Trump was the preferred candidate among every subgroup of Christian voters. He secured the overwhelming majority of the vote from SAGE Cons (90%) along with 75% of the vote from Integrated Disciples and 74% of the vote from Pentecostal church attendees. Trump also received support from a substantial majority of Evangelical church attenders (64%), theologically-defined born-again Christians (64%) and Protestants (60%).

Smaller majorities of mainline Protestant church attenders (56%), self-identified Christians (56%) and Catholics (51%) backed Trump over Harris. This conflicts with exit polls finding that 56% of Catholics voted for Trump in the 2024 election.

Barna issued a statement reflecting on why Christians' support for Trump was so high, explaining that the candidate “did a better job than Kamala Harris of representing hallowed Christian characteristics such as the importance and support of family, the rule of law, limited government authority, financial responsibility, and the like.” 

“In contrast, Vice President Harris’ doubling down on abortion on-demand, open borders, transgenderism, and central tenets of socialistic governance clashed with the core values of the nation’s dominant spiritual perspectives,” he noted.

“Millions of President Trump’s votes came from people who would not vote for him as the nation’s pastor or as a behavioral model for their children, but who perceived he would protect their traditional, cherished values and lifestyle preferences while Harris was more likely to limit or ban such ways of life.”

The research also asked voters what role their churches played in election-related activities ahead of the 2024 election. A majority of all Christian voters said their churches provided teaching about the Bible’s stand on specific issues (54%), with higher shares of Pentecostal and Charismatic church attendees (69%), Evangelicals (67%) and mainline Protestants (56%) indicating that their churches took this course of action than non-denominational church attendees (52%) and Catholics (41%). 

A majority of all Christians (53%) reported that their churches encouraged congregants to vote, without endorsing a particular candidate. Majorities of Pentecostal and Charismatic church attendees (65%), Evangelical church attendees (61%) and mainline Protestant church attendees (53%) maintained that their churches pushed civic participation as did half of non-denominational church attendees (50%) and slightly less than half of Catholics (48%).

By contrast, less than half of Christians told pollsters that their churches provided written information about the Bible’s stand on particular issues (46%), invited or hosted candidates to speak at the church (30%), provided voter guides (28%), registered new voters (26%) and endorsed or recommended particular candidates (23%). 

While majorities of Pentecostal and Charismatic church attendees (65%) and Evangelical church attendees (54%) said their churches gave them written information with a biblical perspective on contemporary issues, less than half of Christians who attend all other types of churches reported otherwise. Less than half of Christians across all religious subgroups recalled their churches engaging in the remaining election-related activities. 

Barna also urged pastors to take a more active role in the political sphere. “Parents, pastors, and other people of influence must intentionally and strategically commit to shaping the worldview and values of the nation — especially among children — to coincide with the beliefs and values they just voted to protect,” he said. “Successfully refining the worldview and values of the American people is the foundation required to facilitate desired national outcomes such as unity, equality, opportunity, safety, peace, justice and joy.”

The Grue Crew welcome Dave Dreher as guest-host to review the sci-fi/horror 50’s monster flick, Fiend Without a Face (1958). The tagline promises “New Horrors! Mad Science Spawns Evil Fiends!” and the stop-motion animation of the fiends – a brain with antennae and a spine – delivers the goods. The script is based on Amelia Reynolds Long’s 1930s short story, “The Thought Monster,” originally published in Weird Tales magazine. A modern remake has been promised in recent times but remains as invisible as the fiends in the first two-thirds of this British B-movie classic. 

At the time of this writing, Fiend Without a Face is available for streaming from the Criterion Channel, AMC+, and PPV on Amazon and AppleTV. It is also available on physical media as a DVD from the Criterion Collection.
