Finished it. It was a very good read, would heavily recommend it to anyone who likes astronomy but is unsure where to begin. Might post some quotes here later, because some parts of this book are incredibly poetic for a technical text.

These quantum fluctuations are the seeds of the galaxies and therefore the seeds of our existence frozen into the oldest light in the cosmos and photographed by a satellite built by the people of Earth 13.8 billion years later.

Practicing meditation for long periods makes it possible, at least temporarily, to know what it means to have no relationship to the passing of time and the movement of mind and memory. And not only that, it provides us with access to our own primordial depths, which inevitably gives rise to a profound and abiding sense of happiness. And that is because, slowly but surely, we awaken to that dimension of ourselves that has never been born and has never entered into the stream of time. Repeatedly experiencing such an enormous shift of perspective makes clear the liberating truth that the source of real contentment has nothing to do with satisfying any particular desire. And it reveals to us, over and over again, that who we are always has been perfectly free from who we have been as a personality…

Mayer Hawthorne Brings New Tunes to Sold-Out Music Hall of Williamsburg
Tumblr media
Mayer Hawthorne – Music Hall of Williamsburg – January 31, 2024
DJ-turned-crooner Mayer Hawthorne drips rizz. For more than a decade, he’s charmed with his throwback falsetto, and expanding his swagger, he teamed up with fellow producer Jake One in 2015 to form Tuxedo, a soulful pop duo that asks, “Do you Fux with the Tux?” He returned to his solo outfit last fall with his fifth studio album, For All Time, a soundtrack that welcomes you through a beaded curtain into a smoky jazz club. With interludes of “Hawthorne Rides Again” throughout, the singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist took his latest release for a spin at Music Hall Of Williamsburg on Wednesday night.  A trio of ladies, sporting matching black-and-white herringbone-print pants, cascaded onto the stage followed by the man himself. They kicked off the set with the new LP’s “The Pool.” Hawthorne donned a smoking jacket to fully embody the night’s relaxed and playful vibes, as they performed music from across his catalog. The crowd was fully in the palm of Hawthorne’s hand happily obeying when asked to sing, “Na na na nana” on “Back Seat Lover.” Beatboxing to introduce the funky “Out of Pocket,” Hawthorne spotlighted the bassist as she throbbed the beat for this toe-tapping ditty.
The disco ball rotated for “On the Floor” as the man of the hour indicated that his shiny shoes were meant for dancing. While the ladies continued on with “Deuce and a Quarter,” he departed for a brief wardrobe change, returning in a snazzy, brick-colored suit with flared slacks. The back half of the set featured classics from his debut studio album, A Strange Arrangement, including “Green Eyed Love,” a dancehall version of “Maybe So, Maybe No” and a brief outro of “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out,” before Hawthorne capped off a spin through New York City with a two-song encore of “Eyes of Love” and “Henny & Gingerale.” —Sharlene Chiu | @Shar0ck

'Netflix has commissioned Einstein And The Bomb, a feature documentary exploring Albert Einstein’s relationship with Hitler, Germany and the atom bomb.
The film will be directed by UK director Anthony Philipson in his feature debut; he has previously directed for series including Our Girl and All or Nothing: Tottenham Hotspur. BBC Studios is producing Einstein and The Bomb, with executive producers James Van Der Pool and Andrew Cohen.
Combining archive and dramatisations, the film will explore key points in the German-born physicist’s life, and how his work changed the course of history.
It comes shortly after Einstein appeared in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer played by Tom Conti, with the film depicting the creation of the atom bomb as part of the life of Einstein’s collaborator J. Robert Oppenheimer.
In 1939, Einstein signed a letter written by fellow physicist Leo Szilard and sent to US president Franklin D. Roosevelt, warning that Germany might develop atomic bombs and suggesting the US should start its own nuclear programme. It was reported years later that he regretted signing the letter...'

i like to go back and reread the book sometimes and i already can't really take him seriously but cohen essentially being ryan's only real propagandist is actually fucking hysterical. if i was trying to manage a city that's on the brink of an all out war because of my terrible economic ideals and the only person that i can count on to make a bunch of art to sway people back to my side is someone im already starting to suspect is a musical terrorist i think i would've blown everything to smithereens and start a new city

monster theory reading list
this list is going to be some recommended reading when it relates to literary teratology or monster theory. some of these works predate 'monster theory' as a concept (which was coined in 1996 by jeffrey jerome cohen) but are foundational to that work regardless.
i'll try to include links to any readings that are freely available online and links to doi etc but if something isn't and you're really keen, hit me up and y'know we'll see what i can do.
monster theory: reading culture (1996) by jeffrey jerome cohen - the original and defining text on monster theory by the man himself. here is a link to a pdf of the first chapter, which i spoke about at length in another post.
the horror reader (2000) by ken gelder (editor) - an incredibly insightful collected edition about the horror genre as a whole, however gelder's introduction to part three, as well as marie-hélene huet's chapter introduction to monstrous imagination were incredibly helpful to my work personally. very generously, gelder has allowed free access to the entire work in pdf form!
the monster theory reader (2020) by jeffrey andrew weinstock - an amazing collected edition featuring cohen, creed, kristeva and a number of others that provides a really good foundational background knowledge of what contributed to the creation of monster theory as well as some fantastic takes on it post cohen.
classic readings on monster theory (2018) by asa simon mittman & marcus hensel - similar to weinstock, this collected edition features a number of classical foundational essays and some more modern ones surrounding monster theory. a very helpful starting point! here is a link to the introductory chapter by mittman and hensel in pdf form!
the monstrous feminine: film, feminism, psychoanalysis (1993) by barbara creed - creed's idea of the monstrous feminine is one of the foundational underpinnings of monster theory and is key in comprehending the 'other' as monstrous, particularly as it relates to women in a patriarchal society. highly recommend! here is the entire book in pdf form!
powers of horror: an essay on abjection (1982) by julia kristeva - kristeva's idea of abjection is a precursor to a lot of theoretical frameworks regarding the horror genre, in particular as a direct precursor to creed's work, then to cohen's work. here is the entire book in pdf form!
this is definitely not an all encompassing list of sources, but it is a good starting point for anyone interested in this particular niche field of literary theory. these are texts that were crucial for me in understanding the basics when i was starting work on my thesis.
