What should one do if one ends up loving a woman one can never be with? Asking for a friend.
Wish I had talked about what it's like with my grandmother when I still could. But she got her wish at long last.

basically if it's your first time you're going to get assigned on the inner border and you're never going to see battle as long as you're there so don't worry/reconcile yourself to that depending on what your attitude is.
unless the leaguer breaks but then I have no idea what it could be like since it's never happened before.
so yeah, bring some cards, board games or whatever. a stash of trinkets since the only thing people do half the time is gamble lol. things you're prepared to lose.
most the watchtowers are pretty well equipped so if there's any food from home you really can't bear to part with now's the time to learn how to prepare it.
decide whether you want to mingle with elves a lot or not because whether you do really depends on your posting and you can pull some strings to get assigned where you want. by which I mean ask nicely. it can be more strict on the outer border but for early timers it's pretty easy-going. also try to ascertain if you have any family you want to be with and where.
do not bring arms unless you have some heirloom of really good quality. no use lugging a piece of metal around when you're going to be told it's more danger to you than to hypothetical orcs and lent something better.
same with basically anything you don't have a proper version of. except blankets. there's always a shortage of blankets for no discernible reason - it's an injoke at this point - and you want to have several.
don't take letter paper. it hurts to see recruits arrive with a soggy mess in their backpacks when we've literally got reams of it in the storeoom.

'Nonetheless for all your valor, I say again: "what know ye of death?" To you it may be in pain, it may be bitter and a loss—but only for a time, a little taken from abundance, unless I have been told untruth. For ye know that in dying you do not leave the world, and that you may return to life.
'Otherwise it is with us: dying we die, and we go out to no return. Death is an uttermost end, a loss irremediable. And it is abominable; for it is also a wrong that is done to us.'
i've seen takes that aegnor eventually departs from the halls after making peace with his parting from andreth, but imo it's so much more fitting that he chooses to never be reborn in aman and remains in mandos for all eternity (or at least until the end of arda marred). andreth here points out what she perceives as one of the differences between death for elves and death for men: that elves may be re-embodied and live their lives anew, while for men death is the absolute end, from which they have no chance to return. but aegnor voluntarily rejects the ability of the elves to live anew, he voluntarily refuses the chance to return, because to him life has no meaning without andreth whom he loves so deeply. in a way, his death -- being forced to leave beleriand and in doing so being forced to leave andreth forever -- is an absolute end for him

To Be Loved By The Secondborn
Tumblr media
Finrod writes a letter to his father. He writes a letter because some things can't help but be left to the boundaries of a sheet of paper and a stain of ink. Some things are left unsaid for the world to let them nurture in peace.
To my father who grieves a son,
To be loved by edain is to burn with the light of the Silmarils. Feelings so blinding that they often take away any sense of self. Men don't love the same way as the elves do. The elves love like the fire that burns in the core of the Earth, like the water that loses itself in the air, like the roots that grasp the ground with passing decades. It is love destined forever. The kind of love that thrums throughout immortality and love given only to one.
But father, men love recklessly. No bond, no oath, no ring holds power to bind their hearts the way it does for elves. It is only the will of their soul that their love blooms even in the floating sand of the desert.
Their love does not grow old like the roots of an aging tree. Instead, it blooms like the blossom of incoming spring. Troubled marriages, estranged relationships, or even indifference can't help but bow to that kind of love.
It is in no form perfect, for nothing on the face of Arda remains unmarred. Yet, despite its flaws and its impermanence, it remains cherished no matter what.
Even Eru's bittersweet gift of death could not stop our distant kindred's love for life. Men who are unbound to Arda, dare to love it. They love so deeply as to lose themselves in it. A love beyond the creator and its creation.
Maybe we elves love truer, deeper, and better but Men father...they love with the intensity of light beyond this world. Maybe it is the spark of fate that awaits them. Maybe it is the reason that even Eru holds them closer.
Such love, I have seen in the eyes of Andreth. The world could mock my brother for falling for a human but I know better. I have seen the love that runs in the bodies that barely have the power to foster it. Maybe I would have grieved for Aegnor, had I not met the edain woman who held the power to challenge an elven lord.
Most view my brother's tale as a tragedy of separated lovers. They do so because for us elves the tale of Beren and Luthien comes closest to our love. Yet, most of us have not known love as humans do. Aegnor and Andreth are not a tragedy. They are a tale unfinished. An end yet to be written and believe me father, the end of their story lies beyond our world.
I will wait for that end. I will wait with my brother who dared to love like an edain.
Yours,
Finrod

I left out Finwë & Míriel & Indis, since that situation is quiet complicated to put it simple😅
I only included ships I (for some reason) found fanworks about during my time in this fandom, if there is a canon/noncanon ship that i did not include that isn't because I don't like it but simply because I didn't find it here (I'm still kind of new to the fandom, I've only been here for like three months...)

This is a version, though, where I could see Haleth and Moryo talking to Andreth and Aico, maybe even convincing them to get married. Andreth is about 20 years younger than Hal.
My new favorite Halenthir idea:
Haleth does battle, meets Caranthir, feels some feelings, heads west per canon and eventually reaches Brethil...and becomes acquainted with Finrod Nom Felagund as he tries to talk his kinsman into letting the Haladin settle in the area.
At some point, Haleth and Finrod are talking and he compliments her on her mastery of elvish languages, and she's like "oh yeah, the lord of Thargelion and his people taught us". (Note: this is not the AU where Caranthir only teaches them Quenya.) And Finrod's like, "hey, that's my annoying grumpy cousin!"
And they chat about Caranthir a bit, because Haleth also thinks Caranthir is annoying and grumpy and is willing to joke back and forth with Finrod on the subject, but she's not willing to go along with it once she feels that Caranthir is being insulted/mocked. And somewhere along the line Finrod clocks that "oh, there's something going on here".
Which is confirmed when, at one point, she mentions that Caranthir wanted her to stay and as good as proposed marriage.
She's about to reel off her usual list of rationalizations for why she couldn't possibly have, but Finrod gets there first with "oh, but of course it was for the best in the end that you left him, elves and Men are just too [dramatic gesture] metaphysically different to ever be together, it's always destined to end in tragedy", and basically tries to Athrabeth her.
Except that Haleth doesn't particularly care to be Athrabethed. Like, yes, she made the choice to do what needed to be done for her people instead of what she maybekindasorta wanted, but that was her choice. She's not really into this smarmy know-it-all elf patiently explaining to her like she's a child that she can't have Caranthir because ~*Fate*~ said so.
And, well, her people have a safe home now. Her sister-in-law will make a good enough peacetime leader until her nephew is grown up.
So she gathers the Haladin, explains what she's going to do. Most of them, naturally, opt to stay in Brethil, but a few adventurous or Thingol-averse sorts join her on the trip she ends up making back to Thargelion.
Where she marches up to Caranthir and essentially says, "I'm going to marry you to spite your irritating blond cousin."
Which is the best reason Caranthir has ever heard of for doing anything.
(They're married for like seventy years and ridiculously happy and in this one, Caranthir's brothers find out fairly early on because he won't stop sending smug letters to Finrod every year with updates on his marriage to his amazing adaneth wife and sketched peredhel baby pictures and so forth.)

Monna Innominata, Sonnet 14 by Christina Rosetti
Youth gone, and beauty gone if ever there Dwelt beauty in so poor a face as this; Youth gone and beauty, what remains of bliss? I will not bind fresh roses in my hair, To shame a cheek at best but little fair,-- Leave youth his roses, who can bear a thorn,-- I will not seek for blossoms anywhere, Except such common flowers as blow with corn. Youth gone and beauty gone, what doth remain? The longing of a heart pent up forlorn, A silent heart whose silence loves and longs; The silence of a heart which sang its songs While youth and beauty made a summer morn, Silence of love that cannot sing again.
The Andreth vibes are killing me.

“I know not how many years my life will go on,” he told her once. They were newly courting then – by a mere handful of hours, in fact, and none save for themselves had even known of their decision. “And I know not what shall become of me, the west or the beyond of creation. Perhaps I will cease to be altogether. If we wed, it may conclude very painfully. But I love you, Nimloth. Far better to me is it that I spend my life with you, even if I must lose you at the end of it.”
that snippet is part of a dior/nimloth-centric wip that may see the light of day anywhere between a few months to several years from now -- but looking at it i just realized that dior/nimloth to some extent is a sort of inverse to andreth/aegnor? well, they're not in precisely analogous situations because aegnor had the war going on which influenced his decision not to go forth in a relationship with andreth. but it was also the pain at the thought of being helpless as andreth grows old and dies and he loses her forever that shut down the possibility of a real relationship between the two of them, despite them mutually being in love. dior/nimloth, meanwhile -- dior clearly ages much faster than elves do, even if maybe slower than a human, so they must know there's a good chance that if they get married nimloth might also be unable to do anything but watch as her husband ages and dies, and there's a good chance he'll go beyond arda and they'll never see each other again. for their part dior and nimloth decide to take that bullet, and bear the pain that comes with possibility, to be together. that's just. hmmm. i never thought about that, of andreth/aegnor and dior/nimloth being in similar (though again, not identical) situations and taking opposite paths. anddd both relationships end in tragedy anyway so there's that too :))))

THIS. This is why the Athrabeth of Finrod & Andreth is my absolute favorite piece of writing. I am a SLUT for tragic romance and NOTHING is more tragic than Andreth & Aegnor, who loved each other deeply but were unable to be together in life OR death. Whenever I need GOOD DEEP cry, i read that. Those final words of Finrod “Wither you go may you find light, and await us there, my brother and me.” Have CARVED themselves on my heart and I WILL have them Tattooed on my person at some point.
Okay, but can we talk about why there is so much "doom" around the idea of Elves/Men romantically linking together in Tolkien canon?
The fates of Elves and Men are separate in the afterlife. When Elves die, their spirit is sent to the Halls of Mandos in the Undying Lands known as Valinor, which rests on the continent of Aman in the far West, where they await judgment for penance or reincarnation into a new body in the Undying Lands. If Elves don't die in their physical body, they simply sail West and are granted passage to the Undying Lands.
Men are not allowed into the Undying Lands. Should Men attempt to sail West to the Undying Lands, they will be stopped by the perils put in place to stop their entrance—storms, drowning, leviathan sea monsters, you name it. The Valar will strike you down. When Men die, they go beyond the Spheres of the World to an afterlife the Elves know absolutely nothing about.
Should an Elf, who is not a direct descendant of the Half-elven line of Eärendil (whose line, due to Eärendil's sacrifice, was granted the choice from Ilúvatar to shed their immortality for a Mortal fate—Elrond's father was Eärendil, so his daughter Arwen is a perfect example of that) . . . should an Elf not of Eärendil's line fall in love with a Mortal, when they or their lover dies, they will never meet them again in the afterlife as their fates are permanently severed until the End of Time itself. They will never see each other again unless the World is broken and remade as Ilúvatar wills it.
That is why Elf/Men relationships are doomed. Not because, oh, racism. Because, when they die, they will see never see each other again until the World is broken and remade and Time itself ends. They will have no afterlife together. They will not spend eternity together. They will have love only for a brief glimpse of time that will be gone in an instant, and then they will be permanently severed from each other forever.
To fall in love with a Mortal . . . yeah, it's like that. Now, imagine, Elves having full knowledge of this, as they do, and they still find themselves falling in love with a mortal woman or man.
And, instead of backing away, they choose to stay with their lover.
If that isn't metal as fuck, I don't know what is.

Beginning of the End
Chapter 1: His Name
Tumblr media
Summary: Worlds change. So did Arda. But what happens when the strings from the past tug the buried bonds again? Faces from the past have returned with the dreams plaguing the Eldar in the Blessed Realm. Is this the beginning of their end?
Pairing (this chapter): Aegnor x Andreth
Chapter 2
She was different. His dreams had changed over the years, but they had always been of her. Aegnor dreamt only of Andreth. Dreams shifted at times. As if living through different ages and like a fool Aegnor never stopped. He could not. The prospect of getting to see her was greater than anything.
He had come to find it greater than any honor or custom. And so, after death, while healing, and after rebirth, Aegnor still held on to the dreams. It had been a blessing, Irmo had given it to him as the only solace the world offered.
The dreams were not all good. They were lives that she lived without him. He did not know if it truly was the fate of the children of Illuvatar or if it was a ploy to appease his broken heart.
A maid, a knight, a healer, a merchant, a five-year-old who drowned and never got to grow up into an adult, a slave, a slave owner, he had followed her through all the ages. Somehow even confined to the hidden lands of Valinor Aegnor had kept up with the world.
In some lives, she had been married off to an unknown man and in others, she was born as a man and married another woman. In one life she had the body of a man but the soul of a woman. In another, she was pursued by a woman.
In all the ages of change, she had never once said the words she had said to him. There was romance and sex but it was never love. Maybe he should have given up when he had first witnessed her marriage to another man but he stayed and he saw it go down. How the man would come back drunk and then without care beat her, his Andreth in another hroa. The man, who married her in that life killed her.
Aegnor stood there and saw her husband abuse her and he could not have done anything to save her. He had seen her husband lock her up in the darkest of rooms and heard her fading breaths. In that life, she died bloodied in a cold dark room. Murdered by her husband who later accused her of eloping with another man.
In another lifetime she was a healer, proficient in the arts of healing. In that lifetime, she scummed to death while treating the plague patients. A lonely existence. She died and there was no one left to look after her. Her body; buried under piles of the rotting flesh of other dead.
Every one of her death was painful. It was a reminder of her mortality, the reason for their separation. Had she died alone in the life she shared with him? A wise woman left to face death with no one but herself.
However, this life was different. His Andreth had never looked this similar to her past. Same eyes, nose, lips, hair, everything about her was unchanged. As if a wraith from their past had come to life.
While in the past Andreth carried some semblance of her features it was never the same. There was some change. Darker or lighter hair, eyes with the color of sky or grass, or mannerisms varied in different lives. This resemblance was agonizing and addicting at the same time.
Her eyes were full of life, mimicking the color of the Earth that gave life to everything. Her hair- long and untamable like it had been when she raced her mare through wide-open fields. This version of her was just as curious as her past self. A spark of innocence and awe lingered around her.
Smile and laughter came easier to her, unlike in the past. Melancholy and misfortune that followed her were nowhere to be found. This life came like a much-awaited spring after harsh winter.
Aegnor could not hold his smile back as he watched the woman from his dreams. Uncaring of anything the woman danced to the music that played in her ears. Her eyes closed as she moved around to the beat he could hear clearly because of his keener hearing. Her lips moved to mouth the lyrics she listened to.
Hair tied up, clad in baggy clothes that she loved in this life. She danced around the kitchen as a pan sizzled with food in the middle of cooking.
Had he been there he would have joined her. Dance with her, hold her, and look at her. Run his fingers through her hair. Was he given another chance he would do all this without any regrets?
And so, the days came to pass. Aegnor continued to dream of Andreth. He did not dream every single day of her life. His dreams were some stolen instances Irmo granted him.
It was one such dream that changed everything.
“Aegnor,”
The dreaming Aegnor flinched at the mention of his name. How long had it been since he had last heard his name in that voice?
“Andreth,” he called out on an impulse as he took in the scene unfolding in front of his eyes. Huddled on a couch, surrounded by blankets, staring at the book in her hands was Andreth.
She did not look at him. Her eyes were captured by the written words.
“Yeah, he was the one who fell in love with a human woman,” somehow in his trance, Aegnor had failed to notice another woman sitting right next to Andreth. His mind reeled in confusion, anxiety, and sudden nervousness as the other woman continued speaking of him.
“Did they end up together?” Andreth asked, stopping her friend’s excited rambling.
“No,” her friend answered without missing a beat. “Apparently, he could not marry her because they were in a ‘war’,” rolling her eyes the other woman made a gesture with her fingers. It did not escape Aegnor that the gesture was not a kind one.
“So, it's a tragic love story…” Andreth plopped her head back into the sofa cushion. Neither a question nor an answer.
“Aegnor and Andreth,” a muted whisper- Aegnor heard as conscience came back to him in Valinor.
