“The Women of DC Comics: A Retrospect” - Day 28: Andrea Beaumont:

Another female character spotlighted in our session that originated outside of comics is the beautiful Andrea Beaumont, debuting in the animated film Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, which hit theaters December 1993. According to provider Alan Burnett, they wanted to have a major love interest for Bruce Wayne since he really didn’t have one for the ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ tv show. In the film, wealthy daughter of Carl and Victoria Beaumont, young Andrea attended Gotham University where she met socialite Bruce Wayne and they instantly fell in love. As time passed two had planned to marry with Bruce deciding to give up his new life of crime fighting. But the idea of a normal life was shattered when Andrea returned the engagement ring to Bruce and went away with her father, resulting in Bruce transforming into Batman. It turned out that her father had been stealing money from his criminal associates, which lead to Andrea and her father having to flee to Europe and lived in secret. Consequently, the mafia tracked down Carl Beaumont in Europe and hired a hit man, now known as the Joker, and killed him. After this tragedy, Andrea Beaumont descended into darkness and adopted the costumed vigilante guise of the Phantasm to get her revenge. While investigating, Batman runs into Andrea briefly, her realizing his identity. Discovering Arthur Reeves was behind her father’s death, Andrea as the grim reaper guise of the Phantasm, proceeded to kill the old mob bosses and would have killed the Joker if Batman had not stopped her in a violent battle. Badly bruised by the revelation of Andrea’s dark secret, in the end she disappears without a trace with Joker. Referenced in The New Batman Adventures and other DC media such as Batman Beyond 2.0, Andrea and Bruce are foils of one another, leading a secret life from dark tragedies. This femme fatale is one of many examples illustrating that Bruce’s heart and his cowl cannot co-exist.
