Imagine you’re a second year college student at the same university some of the jackets went to (I’m thinking Rutgers with Shauna, Lottie, and Jackie). They find a four person apartment and send out an ad which you take

Shauna Shipman's spirit animal

Wolf: powerful,highly intelligent, intuitive, has a strong sense of protectiveness.

Wolves are pack animals. They do better when they stick together.

We see from the beginning how Shauna, despite being close to Jackie (close being an understatement/ meant to say intertwined), and maybe her interactions with her teammates, she does seem to be better in her own company. She is a loner.

The loner. The odd one out. The different one.

Javi carves her a little wooden wolf as a present. To me, that symbolises Shauna's nature. She's a lone wolf. She's surrounded by people but she always feels like she's walking the path alone.

But wolves are pack oriented. Shauna craves to be part of the pack, craves to be seen, and craves to be the Alpha.

Lone wolf : a pack wolf that travels alone temporarily during the summer.

Shauna refuses to share her pregnancy with the team, she's reluctant to ask for help. But she soon realises she needs people. Winter comes and she's part of the pack. The pack takes care of her,they help her deliver the stillborn baby. She's not alone anymore.

But ...she is not the Alpha either. She's still not seen as she truly is. Wild,primal, driven by emotions and the need to be wanted as she is,not as what she became under Jackie's shadow.

We saw her howl during Doomcoming. We see more of her howling in the S3 trailer.

She is fully embodying her spirit animal,the wolf.

She's too cold and distant to let anyone in, but a wolf needs its pack to survive.

Her knife is sharp but her teeth are sharper.

Shauna Analysis: Identity and the Boob Dress

One of the main overarching themes of Jackie and Shauna’s friendship is that Jackie feels the need to imprint herself onto Shauna, and that Shauna’s identity is entangled into Jackie. We get pieces of this throughout precrash flashbacks but it really gets thrust to us in their fight resulting in Jackie’s death, where Shauna says “you tell me what to wear, what to do, who to hook up with.”

So with that in mind let’s go back to the scene of Shauna trying to decide what to wear to the party

Jackie initially shoots down this outfit (which I still think is cute) and says “wear the red dress I got you. The boob dress.” I see some people zone in on Jackie saying “wear whatever you want” when Shauna pushes back to say that she did in fact have a choice, but skip over her response “thanks, I won’t.” There’s two ways we can view this, and I think both are right. One is that Jackie is being passive aggressive to make Shauna feel like it’s her choice. It’s the classic “whatever, I don’t even care” that I imagine many of us have experienced. The other is that Shauna’s identity is so entangled into Jackie that is impossible for Shauna to just wear what she wants without Jackie’s explicit permission

When we get to the party Shauna does in fact wear the dress but she adds in one of her own jackets on top, which we can see in the background hanging on her door earlier. Now, this may be the point where I’m overthinking things, but I find it really interesting that Jackie calls it the boob dress and Shauna uses her own jacket to cover up her chest.

Jackie buys her a dress with the intention of having Shauna show her cleavage and pressures her into wearing that dress, and Shauna uses her own jacket to hide that. She typically doesn’t wear revealing clothes, and I imagine there was a sense of discomfort. We’re going beyond Jackie just imprinting into her and into pushing Shauna’s boundaries

Notice how closed off she is compared to the other girls. Most of the other Yellowjackets stand far more open throughout that scene.

I can hear some people saying “it’s not that deep” but I actually think it is. Clothes are a really interesting part of identity. You use them for individuality or conformity depending on the setting and social climate. People all have their own aesthetics, which we can really see in the show. Jackie’s the preppy girl, Natalie’s the alternative girl, Van’s the butch girl, Laura Lee’s the modest Christian girl, Lottie’s the rich girl. We get all that through clothes alone. But what’s Shauna?

The girl who sleeps with her best friend’s boyfriend because she wants to be her. The girl who wears her friend’s clothes even after she’s dead. The girl who finally pushes back against it all, just to drive her best friend to death, and spends her life being haunted by her

So it’s more than a dress. It’s a conflict of identity that burdens Shauna her entire life
