“The ABC’s of Robin” - ‘C’ is for “Clayface Walks Again”: After #DickGrayson debuted as the first #Robin The boy Wonder in #DetectiveComics 38 in April 1940, the #Batman Family was born. However, there were already important figures in #BruceWayne’s life before the ‘sensational find of 1940’ and that was #JulieMadison, Bruce’s fiancé. Madison’s last Golden Age appearance comes in #BillFinger’s “#Clayface Walks Again” originally published in Detective Comics (Vol 1) 49 from March 1941, illustrated by #BobKane, #JerryRobinson and #GeorgeRoussos. After escaping prison, ex-actor Clayface (#BasilKarlo) returns to the theatre to cause deadly havoc. Discovering this news, Batman goes to the movie set of the film "Argus", which stars his fiancée Julie Madison, now dubbed 'Portia Storme'. Trying to get his revenge on Madison, Clayface nearly kills her and everyone around him, including Robin the Boy Wonder, by burning down a large piece of the set. In order to have Clayface emerge from the shadows, the #CapedCrusader has Julie Madison don the Robin costume. This plan is successful and Clayface returns to jail. Julie’s appearance in this tale is the last for decades because in this story, she calls off her engagement to Bruce Wayne due to the fact that she wants someone who is more than just a playboy millionaire. Ironically she desires a companion like #theBatman, a theme that is reoccurring throughout the #DarkKnight’s romantic history. While Batman’s love life takes a hit and there’s some fantastic house ads within the issue (panels 2 and 3), “Clayface Walks Again” is the first time a woman wears the Robin costume, even if for a plot to catch the bad guy, which evidently will pave a way of future Girl Wonders we will highlight in this Robin celebration. ✌🏼💛❤️💚🦇 #HistoryoftheBatman #DCComics #BatmanArt #ComicArt #ComicBooks #Comics #BatmanFans #BatFans #InstaBatman

“The ABC’s of #Robin” - ‘B’ is for “#BorntoKill”: When #BruceWayne returned to #theBatman mantle after his apparent death, he discovers how to be a father to #DamianWayne through forming a Dynamic Duo with his son, the 5th (canon) and new Boy Wonder. The early stages of this adjustment is seen in #TheNew52’s #BatmanandRobin arc ‘Born to Kill’, originally published in 2011’s #Batman and Robin (Vol 2) 1-8, written by #PeterTomasi and illustrated by #PatrickGleason and #MickGray (cover to 2012’s issue 6 presented). The new #DarkKnight and Robin go up against a new lethal foe of Gotham City named #Nobody whose mission is to rid #BatmanIncorporated. During this hunt for Nobody, Bruce is trying to calm Damian’s literal and natural killer instinct and skill; Bruce wants to do right by his son and doesn’t want to nurture the assassin taught by his mother #TaliaAlGhul. The arc illustrates not only this struggle between Bruce being a father to Damian and heroic mentor but also Damian’s temptation to kill, reinforced by Nobody who wants to bring him under his murderous wing. In the end, fed up with physical and mental torcher, Damian succumbs and kills Nobody, resulting in Bruce and Damian having a heart to heart (while #AlfredPennyworth heals their wounds) Bruce teaching him that murder continues the cycle of violence each day they swore to rid within their city. “Born to Kill” is an essential modern Robin arc showcasing Damian’s new role as Robin, his dynamic with his father and how, in comparison to others who have taken up the mantle such as Dick Grayson and Tim Drake, the Boy Wonder persona can be more morally complex than being the #CapedCrusader’s sidekick. ✌🏼❤️💛💚🦇 #HistoryoftheBatman #DCComics #ComicBooks #Comics

“The ABC’s of #Robin - ‘A’ is for “A Lonely Place of Dying”: #JasonTodd killed by the Joker in “Batman: A Death In The Family” had the #Batman not only emotionally broken, but also without a sidekick. The year 1989 left #DCComics creators wondering if they wanted to resurrect the character again. The answer came in #MarvWolfman and #PatBroderick's character Timothy Jackson Drake whose origin was detailed in the 5 part crossover story arc 'Batman: #ALonelyPlaceofDying', originally published in Batman (Vol 1) 440-442 and New Titans 60-61. The #DarkKnight has become reckless and more violent in his crusade for justice, which makes the Bat Family of Alfred Pennyworth and #DickGrayson aka #Nightwing worried for his well being. As Batman attempts to track down #TwoFace, Nightwing comes across young #TimDrake who, through his natural detective skills and slight fascination with the #CapedCrusader of Gotham and the Flying Graysons, has deduced that #BruceWayne is Batman, Grayson is Nightwing and #theBatman hasn’t been the same since the death of the Boy Wonder. Drake pleads with Dick to return to the Robin mantle for Batman’s sake, but Grayson wants to stay as Nightwing and lead the #TeenTitans. However, with his mentor in pain, Nightwing goes to help Batman in Gotham to stop Two-Face. This results in Tim briefly wearing the Robin costume when he learns that Nightwing and Batman have fallen into one of Two-Face’s traps. Drake saves this Dynamic Duo despite having the villain escape. In the end, between Batman and Nightwing and Tim Drake’s brilliant detective work, the trio are able to apprehend Two-Face. Although Batman worries about Tim Drake’s knowledge of his true identity, he does realize that he needs a partner to balance out his guilt and rage since Jason Todd’s death, leading to Tim Drake’s training to become the 3rd Robin. A fan favorite character to take up this celebrated persona “A Lonely Place of Dying” is an essential read to learn more about Robin’s history. ✌🏼❤️💛💚🦇 #HistoryoftheBatman #BatmanArt #ComicArt #ComicBooks #Comics #BatmanFans #BatFans #InstaBatman

In #Batman's creation by #BobKane and #BillFinger in 1939, he was a mixture of the pulp fiction character Zorro and the world's greatest detective, Sherlock Holmes. After a year in #DetectiveComics under National Publication as the lone masked vigilante solving crimes and saving countless citizens in a New York metropolis, Finger noted that something was missing. "Holmes had his Watson.", Finger says, "The thing that bothered me was that Batman didn't have anyone to talk to...I found that as I went along Batman needed a Watson to talk to. That's how Robin came to be." And so, with his initial design inspired by N. C. Wyeth's Robin Hood, in Detective Comics (Vol 1) 38 from April 1940, the character of #Robin the #BoyWonder, the sensational find of 1940, bursts through the cover with #theBatMan standing by his side with a smile. This began the Batman Family and the start of the popular comic book sidekick that we all know and love today. Over the last 78 years, the Robin persona has evolved not just with several characters (art presented by #DustinNguyen @Duss005) but what the mantle represents within the #CapedCrusader’s mythos. In our new history session “The ABC’s of Robin”, we will highlight memorable moments within the Boy (or Girl) Wonder’s time in #DCComics from A to Z in hopes of further understanding how this icon has defined the sidekick and hero concept in American comic books. We’ll begin with the first letter of this unique alphabet soon here on #HistoryoftheBatman, so stay tuned!
