Do you think Rebekah and Hayley would work as a romantic pairing?

I want to say yes because this show definitely needs more sapphic rep, but I fear they are too similar in personality but too different in desires. Haybekah to me is similar to Klayley. They could have a hot night together, but ultimately it would burn out fast.

Their personalities are too hot headed and stubborn to make a long term romantic relationship work. Even their friendship seemed to center around Klaus and Elijah.

It's also hard to say because Rebekah's character goes through a lot of different forced growth. Rebekah in TVD would have annoyed Hayley to no end. She would have seemed spoiled and self-centered, traits Hayley wouldn't have respected. Rebekah in TO becomes more mature and even has moments of great wisdom. Hayley and Rebekah both go through a lot of self discovery throughout TO, but they end up deciding they want different lives.

Rebekah thinks she wants a domestic life: husband, kids, etc. But we never actually see that from her. Any time she is given the opportunity to have it, she runs. We see her crave a romantic relationship which is often denied by Klaus. But there are periods of her life she could have sought a more domestic life. She could have been a mother figure to Marcel, but we know how that worked out. When Klaus leaves for New Orleans, she doesn't settle down, rather she wants to explore the world. When she is forced away from her family, she settles down in New York City. There were so many times where Hope needed more parental figures and Rebekah did not step up. She liked to mother Hope as a baby but spent much of Hope's life living her own life. I'm not saying she is wrong for this, but it just goes to show that she didn't truly know what she wanted out of her life. She was figuring it out for the first time in her life since Klaus was allowing her to be on her own. She wanted to discover the world and be her own person, not be tied down to one place.

Hayley wanted a calm life with Hope. She also had the opportunity to travel the world. But instead, we see her gravitate to characters that could promise her a more domestic life. When she is on the run, she doesn't go to big cities, rather she shelters in the middle of nowhere. She doesn't crave an exciting life because that's all she's known. Hayley craves stability.

All of that to say, their wants for their life weren't compatible. It's easy to see characters have chemistry on screen and ship them, but it's not always practical for the characters. They would make a hot couple, but likely would struggle to find common ground to base a relationship on.

Do you like Rebekah and Hayley's friendship?

I like Rebekah and Hayley's friendship but I do think the fandom overhypes it sometimes because of Phoebe and Claire's friendship.

I think the writers intended for Hayley and Rebekah to be super close, like sisters but when Claire decided to leave the show it fell flat. I have no evidence but I've always believed that they came up with the idea of Freya's storyline simply because Claire Holt decided she couldn't continue as a regular on the show. They needed a sister to even out all the men. So I think the closeness we see from Freya and Hayley in the later seasons was originally meant for Rebekah and Hayley. But with how the show played out, Freya and Hayley or Hayley and Cami end up having closer friendships than Rebekah and Hayley do.

I wish Claire would have stayed, but I also kind of like that she got to be free of everything for a lot of the show. However, because of this, Rebekah and Hayley are more of long distance friends rather than sisters.

We don't even get to see Rebekah's reaction to finding out Hayley's dead. They have minimal reactions after the first half of season 1 and as far as we know don't keep in contact nearly at all while Rebekah is gone. For instance, when Rebekah comes back in season 3, she isn't even aware that Hayley was no longer living in the compound. She was daggered months after Hayley moved out and we saw in the beginning of season 3 that she was keeping in touch with Freya, but not Hayley when Hayley's curse is broken.

The writers constantly did a terrible job developing off screen friendships. And even the ones we get, they always put on the backburner for the romantic relationships. The writers need to learn the importance of platonic relationships.

I love both the characters and I do enjoy their friendship, but I wish it would have been more. They probably don't even rank in my top five friendships on the show simply because we see so little of them actually being friends.
