More Lluna and Baudouin 🎀
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alhamdulillah this is the first time in a while that I am sorta proud of a drawing. Please show it some love 😭🥺👉🏻👈🏻
The next update of the story is taking longer because things are starting to pick up (many new characters making their appearance) and there is a lot to research and cross reference to do. It’s kind of exhausting.

This poem tells the story of the poet Ibn Zuraik Al-Baghdadi, who fell in love with and married his cousin. However, due to financial hardship and poverty, he repeatedly left his home to seek a livelihood but was unsuccessful. Determined, he decided to leave Baghdad for Al-Andalus. His wife opposed this decision and begged him to stay, but he insisted on his plan. He traveled to meet Emir Abu Abdurrahman of Al-Andalus to praise him in hopes of a reward.
The Emir wanted to test Ibn Zuraik and gave him a meager gift. Ibn Zuraik felt great sorrow and said, "To Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return. I have crossed deserts, wastelands, and seas to reach this man, and he has given me this meager gift." His spirit broke, and he isolated himself in the inn where he was staying. Consumed by grief, he fell ill. Days passed, and the Emir, occupied with other matters, forgot about him. When the Emir finally asked about him, they found Ibn Zuraik dead in the inn, with a note beside his head containing this poem.

A fairy dies every time I hear andalusi moors being described only as black when they, in fact, and most particularly the higher classes, were pale as ghosts because ✨️they were descendants of basque slaves✨️

This is in The Land of Darkness by Ahmad Ibn Fadlan and several other Arab authors, such as Abu Hamid Al-Andalusi Al-Gharnati who wrote this section in the 12th century.
White ppl jumpscare is in reference to the Yura people who dwell North of the Bulghars, "They are reddish in colouring with light-blue eyes and hair like linen, almost white." Mind you according to Al-Gharnati the Yura are also prohibited from visiting the Bulghars in the summer for they bring freezing weather and kill crops wherever they go.
Also consider:
1) there are and have always been Arabs and members of numerous other cultural groups across Western and Central Asia who had light coloured hair and/or pale complections. No, this has no bearing on 'whiteness' as an arbitrary modern racial category that intentionally mischaracterizes human biology.
2) the ambassadors, traders, pilgrims etc. who wrote these accounts were likely to encounter other travellers from afar where these traits are more common.
3) the Saqaliba. In the Land of Darkness there are numerous accounts of Saqaliba, primarily slavic peoples who were frequently enslaved by the Rus and sold across Eurasia. Other accounts describe some among them as having pale complections and blue eyes.
4) Ibn Fadlan gives brief descriptions on the physical appearances of most of the diverse groups he visits without special attention to the few Yura he saw in Bulghar.
Reading a book about slavery in the middle-ages, and as the author sorts through different source materials from different eras, I am starting to understand why so many completely fantastical accounts of "faraway lands" went without as much as a shrug. The world is such a weird place that you can either refuse to believe any of it or just go "yeah that might as well happen" and carry on with your day.
There was this 10th century arab traveller who wrote into an account that the fine trade furs come from a land where the night only lasts one hour in the summer and the sun doesn't rise at all in the winter, people use dogs to travel, and where children have white hair. I don't think I'd believe something like that either if I didn't live here.

My biggest digital artwork yet!
Lluna and Baldwin in his chambers 🌔
Thank you for 2k hits, 100+ kudos on AO3 and almost 4k reads on Wattpad! <3

(Original colors) Two version of Safiyyah, because technically she’d be bigger in a scene like this, but little Safiyyah with Baldwin was too cute

Heaven Can’t Wait
/I have never been able to draw a scene like this, a composition with basically no references. I know the perspective and Baldwin’s pose/proportions may be off—it’s because of that (I have always needed references so I have no idea how this happened) 😬 I am just happy I was able to pull this off! 24+ hours of work
My idea was to animate the lighting of the candles but I tried and it didn’t look good. I also animated them blinking which was cute, but there were too few frames overall to make it look like a natural pace. I was being too ambitious for the little animation experience I have 🥺 sorry for the gif quality

An Iberian lynx takes its first steps after being released in the Sierra de Arana mountain range near Granada, Spain. Five Iberian lynxes, three females and two males, were released in a mountainous area of Andalusi as part of the LIFE Lynx Connect project to repopulate this native species from the Iberian peninsula in the ecosystems most adapted to its characteristics

Verdigris pigment made to the medieval method, mainly following al-Qalalūsī's recipe from the thirteenth century Andalusi manuscript Tuhaf al-Khawāṣ. (tl. Joumana Medlej)
Verdigris is obtained by exposing copper to the vapours of vinegar/acetic acid in a sealed environment over the course of several weeks. Here i used a clean copper sheet over 12% distilled vinegar, but many more shades can be made by playing around with the copper and vinegar sources !
