The Great Goodreads Diss List (Part 1)
Context: For many years now, I have been collecting funny lines from Goodreads reviews to share with my coworkers. (I do collection development, reader's advisory, and weeding at a public library, so I read a LOT of reviews)
Are some of these, perhaps, rather mean? Yes, but they are also very funny, and come from a place of honest frustration. In the tradition of Bargepole threads and lists everywhere, names and titles have been censored.
"First, I want to say that I understand how hard it is to write a book and how amazing it is when it is actually published. Congrats to the author for that accomplishment. That said--"
"Warning: This review will be lengthy due to pure hatred."
"I found myself feeling really, really annoyed with the world that this book is allowed to exist. We live in a universe where the passenger pigeon is extinct but this book goes along merrily being read by unsuspecting lovers of words and ideas and stories? It just seems like too much, you know?"
"Don't do it. Don't spring the cash for the hardcover. Instead, eat an entire bag of Twizzlers, spend some money you don't have at a high-end department store, look up on Facebook the shady college boyfriend that made you cry, research the current value of your home or 401K and then read all about how the big hedge fund managers are faring during the economic crisis. You'll feel about the same stomach pain if you waste your time reading this book."
"This wretched novel begins with the mugging of an old lady and it appears I may be in the process of repeating that loathsome crime as [author] was 78 when she wrote it. It is not nice to put the boot into such a poor defenseless old creature lying there with only a damehood, a Booker Prize and a few million quid. It’s a nasty job but somebody has to do it."
"I think this is the way dead people would write, if they could."
"I am considering setting up SPABB: Society for the Protection of Accurate Book Blurb. This blurb appears to have been written by someone from the publishers who met [the author] the night before, got very drunk, lost his notes and then constructed something in a fug of hangover the next morning."
"I congratulate [the author] on the early half of his book, which was thoroughly fun and made me laugh and think. I congratulate [the author] on the second half of his book, for finishing it. It reads like that was difficult."
"…a woman whose taste in contemporary literature has roughly the same batting average as a pitcher in the National League."
"The author is a pompous windbag."
"Recommends it for: No one. Recommended to me by: A friend who apparently wished to cause me great suffering."
"Makes me wonder: is it possible to obtain similes at a volume discount?"
"The repeated phrases made me want to mail a thesaurus to the author."
"I'm disappointed in myself for finishing this book."
"if the author described [character's] eyes as "obsidian" one more time I was tempted to write her and ask if her thesaurus broke."
"They say that an infinite number of monkeys with an infinite number of typewriters would, if given infinite time, eventually produce the complete works of William Shakespeare. [This book], on the other hand, would probably take the average monkey just under two hours."
"I can't imagine what the author had to do to get this nadir of Western literature printed on innocent trees, but he does seem to know a LOT about being well-connected in New York."
"This book is so bad it is almost worth reading just to make you appreciate the other books you are reading."
"Reads like it was written by a brilliant author, the night before it was due."
"raises interesting questions, like: can a book be so bad as to constitute an act of terrorism"
"has this author ever spoken to a human woman"
"This acorn has fallen so far from the tree that it can’t even see the forest."
"I’m guessing they are touted as ‘beach reads’ because no one will care if they get dropped into the ocean."
"This book begins with all the energy of a hand vacuum near the end of its battery life, and the pace doesn't quicken much from there."
"At least everybody’s eyes stayed the same color this time around.”

Aemond Targaryen x Martell!reader

Warnings- the reader is sort of like Margeary, sort of simp Aemond, injuries, protective! Aemond
wc- 2k+
1 3
-
Aemond didn’t see you for the rest of the day after that moment in your chambers. His mother said you were just settling in and to leave you be for the day. But that did not stop the Queen from pestering her son the next day to take you around Kings Landing.
Aemond stood in front of your door, just staring at it. He was nervous, too nervous. The encounter from the previous day was locked in his brain. There were voices on the other side, yours and two males who Aemond hopes are just your brothers.
He held a bouquet of roses from the garden. He knocked three times and the voices stopped. Then there was a clatter and shuffling, the door was ripped open and Deziel leaned against the frame.
“Oh, Prince Aemond.” He looked down at the flowers in his hands and Deziel put a hand on his heart. “Oh I'm flattered my Prince but red isn’t really my color.” Aemond opened his mouth to say something but the man in front of him got shoved.
“Leave him alone you idiot. Aemond come in.” You opened the door for him. Aemond stepped through and held out the flowers.
“For you.” You grabbed the flowers and gave him a bright smile.
“Thank you, they’re beautiful.” You walk over to your side table where an empty vase was and you put them in there. Then grabbed the pitcher of water that was given for breakfast and poured some into the vase.
“What are your intentions with my sister today Prince Aemond?” Ryon asked as he snacked on a biscuit.
“If she accepts, I would like to take her into the city.”
“And-.”
“I think that is an amazing idea.” You grabbed Aemonds arm and he tensed but you didn’t realize as you started dragging him to the door. “Let's go now.”
“With a chaperone I assume?” Ryon asks and raises an eyebrow.
“Yes, my mother has arranged it all.” You slammed the door shut and you let Aemond go.
“Are we actually going into the city?” You asked with amusement.
“Yes, my lady.” He puts his hands behind his back and starts walking.
“And what are we going to do?” You start walking next to him.
“Anything you want, no matter the time or cost.” You smirked.
“No matter the cost? Be careful, it's only my second day here. Don’t put the crown in debt already.” Aemond gave a small nod to your joke.
-
The smell of manure got stronger and stronger the farther you went in.
“You’ll get used to it,” Aemomd says from the other side. The chaperone sat at the head of the carriage reading a book. Your face grimaced but you kept looking out the window. You could hear a baby crying over the noises from the carriage rolling and the hooves of the horses against the floor. You tried to look for the baby but all you could hear was the cries.
“What is done with the less fortunate here?”
“Enough to keep them from rioting.” You nodded and sighed.
“Can we stop here?”
“The market-.”
“Please.” You cut him off and he sighed.
“Stop here.” He calls out and the horses come to a stop. You opened the door and stepped out, Aemond following close by.
“Y/n what are you doing?”
“I want to see the people.” You stepped over a flipped bucket. Aemond grabbed your arms and pulled you back once you approached an alleyway. The guards had gotten off their horses and were building a perimeter.
“It's not safe.” You grabbed his hand that was wrapped around your arm making him tense.
“You and the guards will be here to keep me safe.” His jaw tensed but nodded. He dropped his hand but you didn’t let it go. You pulled the man with you through the alleyway.
The people stared at you two and the guards. They were clearly nervous. A small child let out a cry and your head whipped around to the source.
A little boy sat against the wall whimpering holding his bleeding knee. You dropped Aemonds hands and slowly approached the boy. You crouched down with your hands on your thighs.
“What happened to your knee?” You ask softly and the boy sniffles and looks up.
“I fell.” He whimpered and removed his hand. There was a nasty cut on it.
“Oh I'm so sorry, let's make sure that doesn’t get infected.” You look up at Aemond who stands silently behind you. “Do you have a water canteen?” He shook his head. “Do any of you men have one?” You turn to the knights. None of them responded until one fumbled with a strap.
“Here you are, Princess.” He hands his canteen to you and you smile.
“Thank you, Ser?”
“Arryk.”
“Thank you Ser Arryk, I will be sure to have a new canteen brought to you.”
“No need.” He says.
“Nonsense.” You smile brightly at the man then turn to the boy. “What is your name?”
“Kenton.” He says and you smile.
“Hello Kenton, I'm Y/n and that's Aemond behind me.” You point your thumb at Aemond and the man kept a stern face. “Can I take a look at your knee?” He nodded and lowered his leg. You gently grabbed it and inspected it. “I'm going to wash it okay, you can hold my hand if you need to.” You held out your non-dominant hand, Kenton hesitated but took your hand and squeezed it.
Aemond watched carefully, you were so gentle with the boy. Caring just like a mother. He’s only known you for two days and he already knew you would be the perfect mother to his children.
You poured the water over Kenton's knee and he squeezed your hand.
“It's okay.” You whisper and watch the dirt fall away from the wound. It only took less than half to clean off the wound, now you just needed a cloth to cover it with. You looked around, Aemond most likely had nothing, and the knights couldn’t rip their cloaks so you settled on your dress.
You grabbed the bottom of your dress and ripped it. Others who were watching close by gasped.
“Why did you do that?” Aemond asks but you don’t answer. The long strip went up to your hip, revealing the under of the dress. You ripped it off then saw the mud at the bottom of it and tore that part off with ease.
“I'm going to wrap this around your knee, keep that on for a bit.” You say as you wrap it around his knee. Kenton now sported a deep yellow piece of fabric on his knee.
Aemond spotted two men approaching, they had hardened faces on. Aemond bent over to your ear.
“Time to go.” You looked over and noticed the two men, by then Arryk and another guard had noticed them and blocked them off. You turn back to Kenton and hand him the canteen.
“Keep this, stay hydrated Kenton.”
“Thank you, Princess.” Kenton gave you a big smile through the tears, it warmed your heart. You stood up and Aemond placed a hand on your lower back. His hand has found itself stuck to the hilt of his sword since the two men approached. They were blocking the way to get back to the carriage.
“I'm going to have to ask you to stay back so the Prince and Princess can pass,” Arryk says.
“And you have not told me of your business here.” The man says.
“I was helping the boy.” You pointed at Kenton. “He was hurt.” The man peered over.
“It's true, father. Princess Y/n helped me.” Kenton says. “She even gave me water!” He held the canteen high to show the man who is his father. He shot a glare at you and his fists tightened. You smiled at him but you couldn’t deny he made you nervous, even with the protection you had. Aemond gently put an arm across your body and moved you behind him.
The man sighed then he and the other with him stepped to the side. The knights in front of you looked back and nodded at Aemond and he nodded back.
“With us,” Arryk says and Aemonds arm is behind you again. He gently pushed you forward to start walking. Once you were in front of it, Aemond stopped you.
“Your dress is ruined.” You both looked down. It was torn, and muddy, and your shoes were destroyed.
“Oh that's alright, I have others.”
The door to the carriage opened and just as you stepped up a loud meow came from above. You looked up and saw a beautiful cat. Large cat. It was brown but the tufts of white shown said the cat was white.
“Hello there.” You reach up slowly to scratch its head. It purred instantly and closed its eyes. Aemond slammed his hand against the sides and the cat jumped up and scurried off. “Aemond!” You hit his arm.
“Now is not the time for the creature princess.” You pouted and Aemonds nose twitched.
“But it was cute.”
-
Aemond did eventually get you to the markets. On the way there he pointed out places as you passed them. At the markets, he followed close behind you as you went to each merchant.
“Look at this Aemond, isn’t it wonderful?” You showed him a painting of a herd of horses.
“Hmm.” You huffed and set it down. You went through the other options until one with black bordering caught your eye. You looked back at Aemond to see if he was looking but he was standing at another shop just next to the painters.
The contents of the painting made you smile.
“This one.” You tell the painter and they grab it.
“Good choice, your grace.” They say and take it back. “4 gold.”
“Aemond.” You grabbed his sleeve and he looked over. “4.” You smile brightly at him. He sighed and reached into his little pouch and took out 4 coins and placed them in the painter's hand.
“Have it brought to the Red Keep,” Aemond says and the painter nods. You grab Aemonds arm and he once again tenses.
“You don’t like me touching you, do you?” You pulled him away and let his arm go.
“I don’t care.” You sigh.
“I want you to be comfortable around me, I want this to work. I appreciate you taking me into the city, I appreciate you getting me these things I do. But we’re supposed to get to know each other and doing this doesn’t do that. I want you to know me, and I want to know you. The real you.”
Aemonds breath hitched and his jaw tensed. He didn’t know how to react to your words. He’s never had to do this with any woman, this is his first solid potential betrothal. All other women take one look at him and scurry off in fear or look at him in pure disgust.
Not you though.
You’ve been nothing but kind to him. Maybe you could be a tad bit forward but in all honesty, Aemond enjoyed it. You could have fun, but you also understood the prospect of duty.
“I'm not asking for a heart-to-heart, but like I said yesterday. Equality. And not just in duty, this relationship.”
Aemond mouth quirked up to a wide smile. He held his hand out to you and you looked down at it. Your hand joined his and he squeezed it.
“Tomorrow you will break fast with me in the library after my training.” You nodded in acknowledgment. “I'm taking you back to the Keep before you drain me.”
-
Nightfall came and now Aemond and Arryk were back in the streets.
“Are you sure it will still be in the area, my prince?” Arryk asks as he carries the cage usually meant for a bunch of rats and a wrapped fish on top.
“We will only know if we try,” Aemond says and they stood in the section where the cat from earlier was spotted. Arryk set the cage down and unwrapped the fish. Aemond grabbed the slimy aquatic animal and started walking around and shook the fish slightly.
“Maybe you should call for it,” Arryk suggests.
“How?” The knight then started clapping and snapping his fingers, and kissing noises?
“Ser Arryk what-.”
‘Meow’
The two men looked over to the large cat coming out from the shadows, already interested in the fish. Aemond tossed it into the cage and the cat stopped. But the poor thing was too hungry to care and dove right into the cage. Arryk shut it and the cat snarled but went back to the fish.
“Now what?” Arryk asks.
“Another gift for the princess.”
-
Aemond and Arryk stood in front of the door and Aemond knocked. He heard nothing so he knocked again. This time he heard a groan and your voice slightly. Shuffling was heard and the door opened.
“Aemond? Ser Arryk? Is everything alright?” You asked and tightened the robe around you.
“Sorry to disturb you, but one final gift.”
“Aemond-.”
‘Meow’
Arryk brought the cage into your view and you saw the cat from earlier.
“You went back for it?” You broke out into a smile. “Open the cage!” Arryk set the cage down so it opened towards your room and he lifted the door. The cat backed out and ran into the room with half the fish in its mouth.
“So you don’t feel lonely,” Aemond says softly, making your heart flutter.
“Thank you.” You reached up on your toes and kissed his cheek. “You’re nothing like they say you are.” You whisper into his ear and kiss the corner of his lips.
Aemonds face turned pink and his eye closed.
“Have a good night my lady.” He says and starts walking away. Arryk simply bows and follows after Aemond.
If one thing was certain that Arryk noticed was that Aemond was smitten already.

I LOVE YOUR WRITING IT'S SO ASDFJKFTICDHBDIGDGXSJOHCBCFG
so I wanted to request Sirius x reader where the reader is on veritaserum and has a banter/ tongue in cheek sorta relationship with Sirius. And then when she's on the truth serum she has to hold back witty comebacks because when she opens her mouth all she keeps saying is how disgustingly cute Sirius looks when he smiles, and how she just wants to snog his face off PLEASE IF YOU CAN 👉👈 🥺
REMINDER: YOU'RE AMAZING AND I'M HAPPY AND PROUD OF YOUR SERVICE TO THE FANFIC COMMUNITY
thank you ♡ —you can't hide the truth from sirius, and he doesn't want to try. 1.3k
cw spiked drink
"Why would someone put veritaserum in the pimms?" you ask James meekly.
"Shortcake, I'm really not sure. Don't get upset about it, alright? Remus is going to tear them all a new one." He squeezes you by the shoulders. "Don't worry, Jamie's here."
"You're very handsome, but I don't fancy you. Much."
James smiles. "Good to know, lovely. I don't fancy you much either. I'll assume you're saving yourself for our mutual dark-haired friend and I shan't be offended."
You slap a hand over your mouth and shake your head, but the truth comes out muffled into your palm anyways. "I really like him," you say, eyes wide with terror, "I don't want anyone else. Oh, James! You're such a dick!"
"Do you mean that, or are you just angry with me?" James asks, helping you out into the garden away from the party and your peers, who can't be trusted to leave you alone when you're set to tell them any secret they want.
"Both!"
"What's wrong?" Sirius asks.
Your neck almost snaps as you look up. James swears, trying to save it as your body instinctively answers. "Someone's spiked our girl," James says extremely loudly to mask your more honest confession, "I'm worried I'm going to tell you I like you," you say.
Sirius, sitting on a low garden wall with a packet of cigarettes in his hand, is puzzled. "What?"
"Someone's put veritaserum in her drink. Maybe in the pitcher. I've brought her outside so she doesn't accidentally tell everyone she's in love with me."
Sirius grins. "Don't be daft, Prongs, she's clearly team Black. Aren't you, sweetheart?"
"You're the prettiest of your trio," you say, sincerity like a blade at the back of your throat, aching, "I'm definitely on your team."
James squeezes your shoulder and helps you into a garden chair, the metal cool against your back. "I'll forgive you because I know you can't help it, and because I know you're dying of embarrassment," he murmurs.
"Thank you. I love you."
"I love you too, shortcake," James says easily, kicking out a chair for Sirius and flopping into his beside you. "Aren't feeling ill, are you?"
"Just terrified I'll say something too honest," you say, holding your breath between words.
Sirius sits in the chair that's been kicked out for him with a cigarette held between his lips, unlit. He lift a his hips to pull a lighter from his back pocket and you flush with heat at the motion, wondering if you're a pervert for looking, for thinking, but lately your flirty banter has your heart doing front flips, and every time you see him you're zoning in on his hands, his arms, the slip of skin at his navel when he stretches, the low sound he makes when something pops.
"Stop ogling me," he says without looking from his cigarette, the end glowing orange in the flame of his clipper.
"I don't mean to," you say.
James shifts uncomfortably. Everyone knows you like Sirius, maybe even Sirius, but he hasn't said a thing about it and you've stopped yourself (so far) from telling him. Any truth has been said under the guise of a joke.
Sirius takes a short drag and holds the cigarette out and away from you, smoke curling in the cold autumnal night. "Shall I go help defend your honour? I assume that's where Remus is. Being spiked isn't funny."
"I'd like it if you stayed here," you say.
James laughs. Sirius leans forward a touch. "Then I'll stay here. Do you need something to drink?"
"My mouth is really dry," you say.
Sirius sends a saccharine smile James' way. It's the look of an older brother used to getting his way, to which James sighs and grumbles, standing from his chair, "Don't ask her anything cruel," he says severely, kissing the top of your head quickly. "I'm serious."
"I won't. I quite like her, in case you forgot. I've no interest in torturing her."
You believe him. James departs with a pat, leaving you and Sirius alone at the garden table, still but for the little motion he does every now and then to fleck ash onto the floor.
"You sure you're okay?" Sirius asks.
"I feel fine. Warm, but that's probably because you're smiling at me."
He raises his eyebrows. "Maybe we should talk about something else. I really don't want to ask you anything too personal while you can't keep a secret. James gave me veritaserum once, when we were kids."
"He did?" you ask.
"Too much of it. I was sick, and I couldn't stop telling him how much I wished we were real brothers. Which he knows now, but at the time it was, you know, very sincere."
"You and James are real brothers," you say.
"I'm glad you can say that. It must be true," he says. "I'm lucky, even if he has tried to poison me."
"James is lucky too. We all are."
"Yeah?" he asks. He's about to continue, but your mouth does the choosing for you, and you cut him off.
"I love knowing you, Sirius, I feel lucky to be your friend, and I–" You bite your tongue hard enough for tears to catch in your eyes immediately.
Sirius' blasé fades, falls away slowly, like a moving cloud unveiling a slice of light, "Don't hurt yourself," he says, alarmed at your wincing. He drops his cigarette and smashes it with his heel, shuffling his chair closer to yours.
"I just don't want to tell you something," you say, shaking your head.
Sirius touches your hand. "Okay, I won't ask you any more questions. I'm sorry. Everyone's allowed their secrets, lovely, I didn't mean to make you answer me. I thought it would be easier to skirt around the issue."
But it's a big feeling, and it's in everything you do. You really, really like him. If you can't be honest about that, maybe you can be honest about something else..
There's no shame in finding a handsome man handsome. And maybe you can convince him that that's all it is. "I just want to kiss you stupid, Black," you say, "like, kiss you until I can't feel my mouth anymore. You look like you know how to really kiss someone."
Sirius laughs suddenly, startled. "I want to kiss you stupid, doll. You're a fucking dime piece," he says through laughter, "and that's the truth."
"You look really nice when you laugh," you further, wondering if this is the wrong thing to do.
"You look beautiful when you laugh," he says.
"Joking with you about stuff is the best part of my week."
"It's the best part of mine. I wish we saw each other more often," he says.
"Did you drink the pimms, too?" you ask.
"No. I'm stone cold sober, sweetheart." Sirius looks behind you and you follow his gaze to the patio doors, where James and Remus are arguing good-naturedly, a tall pint glass filled literally to the rim with water in James' hand.
"Has he left you alone?" Remus asks, quick down the short step to defend you. "I love you, Sirius, but I don't trust you to not ask her embarrassing questions."
"I'm starting to get offended. No, she hasn't told me anything embarrassing. Only that she wants to snog my lips off, but I knew that already." Sirius smiles at you dopily while his friends seize up. "And that's hardly embarrassing, because I want to do it to her first."

On days when he found himself tired and in need of a quick way to relax, he’d subconsciously find himself binge watching videos on your channel— even repeating several videos since you were only starting. HIHIHIH OMG ILYSMMM UR WOEK IS AMAZING!!!
SOOOOOO i have a few req idwas!!
idea 1: reader is lucifers s/o and finds out luci is cheating on them so for payback they hook up w alastor luci may or may not find out up to you!
idea 2: reader is alastors s/o and they are at readers parents house (theyre also in hell) and reader goes to ask their dad sum like "hey daddy..." and her dad and alastor both respond....
JUST A FEW IDEAS I HAD FOR AWHILE BTW IDK IF I DID THIS RIGHT THIS WAS MY FIRST REQ..
You did a wonderful job! Thank you for the request! i did the 2nd idea! I thought it was funny hehehe
Your parents had invited you and Alastor to Sunday dinner. Funny thing that the most church-loving couple ended up in Hell. They never broke tradition even down here.
“Ooh honey we are so happy you two could join us” Your mother chirped, beaming as you hand her the bouquet of flowers you had picked up and pulled you into a hug.
“Its always a pleasure to get a chance to eat your fine cookin maam” Alastor smiled as his mother in law gave him a squeeze, letting y’all inside and heading towards the dining room.
Your mother talked about the latest gossip she had heard, hissing murderously at the mention of Susan joining her book club.
”Oh can you believe that hag? Just can’t let me have nothin”
“I told ya momma if she hate the woman so much why not just smoke ‘er, but nope she too sweet.” Your father’s deep brawl met your ears as you entered the living room.
He smiled at you, pulling you into a bear hug as he kissed your forehead “Ooh there’s my princess” he said affectionately making you giggle. He straightened up, turning to Alastor, he gave a smile
”Aaah how are you doing my boy? heard you were managing a fancy hotel! Me and the Mrs should come check y’all out sometimes.”
They shook hands and you slipped away to help your mother get dinner.
And what a dinner indeed.
Dinner was filled with chatter as the two parties caught up with each other.
Everything was wonderful.
“Daddy can you pass me the pitcher of lemonade please?” you asked as you realized you had a empty glass.
“Why of course”
”Sure thing”
two voices said, making you tense and look up with wide eyes.
Your father and Alastor were now looking at each other as both had reached out to grab the pitcher.
Alastor ears were perked as he gave your father a sharp smile, slowly retracting his hand as he chuckled.
Your father however had a frown on his face and his lips pulled into a snarl, eyes narrowing.
You wanted to be swallowed up by the floor.
Your father’s eyes cut to you, making your cheeks burn as you looked away, embarrassed.
“You wanna tell me why he responded to that? You know what i already have an inkling. Alastor meet me out back” your father growled standing up, making a move to grab his shotgun.
”There’s no need for that!” You whined, standing up to block your father from Alastor.
”Sir i assure you that isn’t half of what she calls me” the red demon chuckled darkly, making the older demon rush at him.
Alastor disappeared in a shrew of shadows, taking you with him.
”Dinner was lovely as always Madam” he kissed your mother’s cheek, disappearing as the sound of a shot rang out.
”Well dinner was rather eventual” he smirked, you facepalmed
”i am never going home again. How will i face them again after that?” You whine. Alastor kissed your cheek
”Dear you’ve called me worst, I’m sure hell forget about it”
———————————————————————————-
“Um guys why is there a demon with a shotgun shouting outside the hotel?” Charlie asked.
You groaned, glaring at Alastor

The weeks flowed effortlessly. Sebastian and Claude were eating your very beck and call. Dinner to your liking, perfected. Your baths, steamed and appointed with the finest of milk from across the countryside. Your bedding and linen, crisp and neatly arranged each and every morning. And your clothes, freshly hemmed and adorning to your body in each and every way.
Ciel kept his commentary to himself but you could tell he was annoyed with you and your requests. Day after day of your requests regardless of the hour. On one end, he found it amusing to see Sebastian be tormented by someone else, but then on another he wished he hadn’t blackmailed you with your own letters.
Tsk. Like you gave a shit what he had to say. You and him both knew that your stakes in the family business would expand the Phantomhive market internationally, globally if presented correctly. Biting the bullet of perversion for one summer for a lifetime of legacy was doable.
For you, at least.
You didn’t even want to be here for the summer in the first place. If you were going to wear out your welcome you were to be sure to do it in the most luxurious way possible.
Using the time without Sebastian to his own advantage, Alois and Ciel were spending more time together doing and discussing God knows what, but you paid it no mind. This just gave you more opportunity to have your wants and wishes catered to like back at home.
But something else was burning inside of you. Something that.. you just haven’t asked for yet.
“What a wonderful morning!” Cheerfully, you sprang up in your bed, your nightgown barely hanging onto your shoulders. You looked over to your right and there they stood. Sebastian with a smile and your bath towel and warm milk for the baths and Claude, in his permanent frown, holding your day dress in both of his hands.
“Is this to the lady’s liking? I think we found this color to compliment your skin tone the best.” Sebastian held the hem of your dress up so you could appreciate the fine stitching at the end. Its rich pigments and hues would certainly look amazing on you. You just couldn’t wait to try it on!
“It’s amazing.” You cooed. Your eyes wandered up to Claude’s who, ironically, avoided yours. With a ‘hmm’ and a downward turn of your lips, you quickly shrugged your shoulders and turned to assume the position.
“Sebastian,” you called out, your feet already dangling off the edge of the bed. You could have easily placed your feet on the ground, but where’s the fun in that?
Sebastian, his charming grin never wavering, neatly placed the milk and your towel on the chaise next to him and took his appointed place at your feet. He fished to your side for your slippers and slid each one on carefully, caressing your ankles as he moved them closer and closer on your feet.
That.. shock, that you felt made you retract your feet from his hands, making him look up at you curiously.
“Is the lady hurt?” He played into this role too well.
You broke his gaze. “No.” Your seemingly mature disposition kicked right back into gear. You huffed, nose to the sky, jumped off the bed and sauntered into the bathroom with one slipper still attached to your foot. Claude looked at Sebastian and Sebastian to Claude with neutral stares. They held their glances for a few more extended moments before Sebastian walked ahead to follow you inside of the bathroom.
Sebastian walked in with you sitting at the edge of the tub. You looked at him and the pitcher of warm milk briefly before scooting to the side, avoiding his gaze yet again while you fished behind you to unbutton your nightgown.
He poured the contents in the steaming water, his eyes never wavering from the water. It was awkward to say the least but you pretended to ignore the silence that crept up behind you.
Dammit. This button is so fickle! You couldn’t undo the top of your gown to save your life and the steam around you didn’t make the process any easier. You fumbled and fumbled with  your clothing long enough for even Sebastian to grow annoyed.
“Lady Y/N,” he sighed, “If I may.” Before you could even agree, he stood in front of you, crouched down to your knees and promptly pulled the nightgown over your head with ease. With a squeal, you covered your chest and crossed your legs, your cheeks burning hot in embarrassment.
“Sebastian, you brute! You didn’t even wait for my permission!” You barked.
“Were you going to get in the water fully clothed otherwise?” You looked away. Damn him.
“Y/N,” he sighed, rubbing his temples. “For someone of your age and status you sure are behaving like a prepubescent child.” What?! “If you’re going to pretend to have the confidence of a woman then I would suggest you to improve on your acting.”
“Improve on my- Now you listen here you- you butler from oblivion!” He couldn’t hold his chuckle which amused him even more. “You don’t tell me what to do.” Your voice dropped to a whisper, afraid that Claude would eavesdrop in.
“Remember our deal. You do as I say and how I  please. You got that? So if I want to be a child. If I want to be pampered, you do just that!” Sebastian raised his eyebrow at you, a frown curving at the ends of his lips.
“I don’t care that this isn’t your desired task for the day. You should have thought about that before you and my brattish cousin thought to-!?” You didn’t even see him move. He gripped your chin in his hand, tilting it upwards so you could look in his eyes. It’s purple pigment unsettling, but you couldn’t look away.
“Y/N, if I were you I’d be very careful of who you speak about. Cousin or not, he is my master and you are just borrowing me. I’ve been quiet about your sass and your attitude so far, but don’t make me change my tune.” Your voice was a mere whimper in response. You tried to close your legs, but it was no use. He stood so close to you that you had no choice and no option when-
Sebastian’s hellish magenta hue quickly faded back to red. A confused look plastered over what was just one of the most intimidating snarls you ever seen.  He leaned his head to the right, then to the left, then back in the center with you. Realizing he still had your chin clasped in his hand, he quickly stepped backwards, clearing his throat as he stood at the doorway.
He didn’t say it, but he could sense something different about you.
“My apologies, Lady Y/N, that behavior isn’t something that the Phantomhive-“
“No.” You protested, slowly closing your legs back to its original position. “No, it’s not all your fault.” His eyebrows twitched at your sudden change in voice.
“I wasn’t behaving how a lady should. And for that I apologize.” With a blush, you looked away, your arm still covering your breasts as Sebastian stood there, neutral. Unwavered.
“Can you turn around so I can get into the bath?” Sebastian shook his head in decline.
“I’m afraid I cannot. If I am to accompany you I have to be sure I can see you at all times.” Your heart thumped in your chest. This would be the opportune time to curse him and excuse him from the bathroom, but you didn’t. With a blush, you dropped your hands, turned around with your back to him and climbed into the tub.
It was a slight movement, but the one subtle catch of your scent confirmed Sebastian’s suspicions from earlier.
“Sebastian, can you wash my back, please?”
The air was thick with a slightly sweet aroma from the milk, its vapors clouding the air and opaque white mist. Sebastian leaned over the tub, his jacket removed and dress shirt rolled up to his elbows as he assisted in your bath. His large hands poured handfuls of water over your back, coating each inch to make sure it was free of soap. Your eyes fluttered downwards in bliss as soft moans escaped your lips the more and more he scrubbed your back.
Your mind wandered, images dancing across your mind as you rested your arms on the edge of the tub, signaling for Sebastian to continue. As he washed your back, thoughts played across your head. One of back home, one of your father, one of your dogs, and one of your lover back home in the countryside. You saw the two of you, wrestling in the field of flowers, enraptured in eachother’s arms. Next thing you saw, you were passionately kissing eachother, his large hands roaming your body as yours quickly unbottoned his shirt.
When you came up for air, your lover was replaced by none other than Sebastian, but when you tried to get off of him, Claude’s hands covered your mouth as he leaned close to you. His lips kissed your ears with a devilish smile as he whispered in your ear:
“Stop resisting.” He pushed you forward and Sebastian held you close, kissing your lips as he guided himself inside of you. Claude positioned himself behind you, ready to enter your second hole until-
“My Lady?” Your eyes shot open. You forced yourself to inhale deep as you looked around. Sebastian was looking back at you, an eyebrow raised with a loofah and makeshift soap in his hand.
“Huh?” You shifted around in the tub and you could feel yourself between your legs. “Did I fall asleep?”
“You did. If you weren’t making so many noises in your sleep I would have let you continue on. But now that you’re up, would you mind leaning to one side?”
You couldn’t even look at Sebastian right now. With a shy nod, you leaned over, brushing your hair back with a blush.
Minutes passed and the only sounds between you and Sebastian were the splashes of water. He didn’t engage nor did you indulge but curiosity got the better of you.
“Sebastian.” You gained his attention, but he continued his task. “If I were to ask you to do something, anything, would you have to oblige?”
“Under the circumstances, yes.”
“Well… if I were to ask you to choose to do something, would you do it?”
“What is the lady suggesting?” He was growing weary of the riddles.
“I mean… we’re in this circumstance because- well- my letters.” You admitted with a blush. “But- You see-“
“Are you saying that the Lady has needs outside of eating and bathing?” He took your silence as a yes.
“And are you asking for me to choose whether to indulge you during your stay?” He lapped the water around you, his hand tracing the inner portions of your thighs. Your breath hitched, but you continued to watch his hand disappear in the water.
“Maybe not in that direction way.. but it’s not fair for me to be deprived for the sole purpose of maintaining the business. It’s-“ his hand cupped your sex, rubbing against your clit with his index finger.
“It’s unethical, to say the least.” Sebastian neatly placed the loofah to the floor and used that same hand to gently wrap around your neck. He tiled it away from you, his warm breath lining the nape of your neck. In the water, his pacing intensified as he watched your face twist and contort into various signs of pleasure. You knew it was wrong to ask for this, you knew that your needs were selfish, but you didn’t want to run from it anymore.
Your pussy grew wetter and wetter under the water, its creamy, sticky substance coating Sebastian’s fingers as he pumped inside of you. He groaned in your ear, enamored at how perverted your cunt grew for him. You clenched down on him, pulling him in deeper. And with a smile he answered your call.
Splashes of water escaped the tub but his vigor never wavered. You threw your head to the side, trying your hardest not to moan out loud since Claude was just out the door! But he didn’t stop. He pushed further and further, his face hovering over you, looking down on you as your hushed moans threatened to escalate. He looked down at you, determined to make you cream all over his hands. With three more pumps, he retracted his fingers, using the milky water to clean his hands. Wiping his hands with a spare towel, he extended his hand to you, a small smirk on his face.
In between breaths, you tried to read him. Was he annoyed? Was he disgusted? Did he enjoy it? There was nothing more than his usual disposition.
“I think the lady is ready to start her day. Don’t you think?” That same smirk was on his face as he helped you stand to your feet. He wrapped the towel around you, purposely leaning closer to your body while his hands wrapped around you, casually sneaking strokes of your soft flesh here and there. You watched his hands, body growing warm again, but you didn’t stop him.
“If you ever wish to engage like that again, simply ask. You hold the cards, Y/N.”
Hold your Ace closest to your chest, my dear. Because the Joker is out to play.

As Bradley pulled into the lot at Petco Park, he flashed a VIP parking pass at the guard. You still weren't sure why you needed to get to the game so early, but honestly, you didn't mind spending some extra time around Bradley today. He made Everett happy, and you were really considering giving him a second chance. Because he made you happy, too.
Bradley and Everett were singing a song about the Phillie Phanatic, and now you were singing along too. He held your hand tight while he parked the Bronco next to the ballpark, and when he grinned and pulled you out through his door with him, you couldn't help but smile.
"I'm so happy you came," he whispered, looking down at you with a crooked smile that had your heart melting. "I planned a lot of stuff to surprise Ev, but if you and he aren't having fun, then we can always just get some food or leave early."
You shook your head at him, amazed that he didn't get it yet. "There's nothing that kid wants more than to spend the day with you, watching the Phillies."
"That's what I want, too," he replied, opening the back door and lifting Everett down. "Ready, kiddo? I have something cool to show you."
You walked a few steps behind them as they made their way to the turnstile hand in hand. "What's faster, a slider or a changeup? And how does the catcher know when to get the pitcher to throw a curveball?" Everett rambled. They looked adorable in their matching backwards caps.
"They practice together a lot. Just the two of them. And they get really good at knowing how to communicate."
"That's cool. I wanna be a pitcher and a power hitter."
"Kid, if you can manage to combine those two, you'll hit the majors for sure," Bradley told him, glancing over his shoulder to make sure you were there. With a smile, he handed three tickets to the guy in the booth, and next thing you knew, you were all being ushered through an underground tunnel.
"Where are we going exactly?" you asked Bradley, losing the battle to slip your hand into his free one. The three of you were being led down a long ramp by a tour guide named John who had given each of you VIP badges to wear.
"On a locker room tour," he replied, and then Everett really got excited.
"I get to go in the locker room?" he asked, skipping ahead and making John chuckle.
"I told them you wanted to see the visitors' locker room," Bradley told Everett. "Maybe some of the Phillies uniforms will be hanging up."
And they were. You stood in the middle of the visitor's suite that looked more like a luxury hotel than a men's locker room while Everett ran around with your phone taking pictures. "Mom! Take a picture of us in front of the bats!"
You snapped a few photos of Bradley and Everett standing near the equipment, and then you tucked your phone away. "This is so cool," you whispered to Bradley while the tour guide showed Everett the snack bar that was reserved for the players. "Thank you."
Bradley sighed. "Jake hooked it up. He begged the groundskeeper. I think he felt bad for what he said to you at the bar."
You nodded and met his eyes. "He told me he likes moms." You watched his eyes narrow just a fraction as he licked his lips.
"Yeah, well I love moms, actually. I was just overcompensating for my insecurities before. You and Ev are intimidating."
You scoffed. "Intimidating?"
Bradley nodded, his brown eyes sincere. "I told you, Kitten, you two are perfect. And I got in my own head."
"I'm eating the snacks that the players eat!" Everett announced, holding up a bag of peanuts. The tour guide let him take a few as he led all three of you into one of the press boxes.
Your hand ended up in Bradley's and he kept pulling you closer, but once he saw who was in the press box, his grip on your hand tightened until it was almost painful.
"Ev, you asked who the starting pitchers were?" Bradley said in awe. "Well, here they are."
"Hey, are you Everett?" asked the Phillies starting pitcher, and you were afraid your son and Bradley were both going to faint.
"Yeah?" your son asked, and John led him closer to the table where two men were sitting.
"Wait, are you really a Phillies fan? I heard you're from San Diego!" said the Padres pitcher with a laugh.
"I like you, too!" Everett said hurriedly. "The Padres are my second favorite team, I swear!" You laughed and both pitchers smiled at you.
"How about we both sign a shirt for you?" asked the Phillies pitcher. "I don't think anyone else has a shirt signed by rival pitchers."
"Holy shit," Bradley muttered as he watched them each sign an MLB all-stars shirt and hand it to Everett.
"Why don't you get in there with him for a photo, Coach?" you asked. Bradley let go of your hand so fast to scramble behind the table with Everett, and you snapped a few pictures of the four of them. Then the pitchers stood and shook hands with Bradley, and it amazed you to see that he was built exactly like the professionals were. Tall, broad and strong.
"Have fun with your parents, Everett," the Padres pitcher told him, knocking his Phillies cap crooked and smiling. "Enjoy the game."
"We will!" Everett and Bradley said in unison, and you stood frozen in place. Maybe they had been too excited to process the word parents, but you'd heard it loud and clear.
They both looked dazed as John led them back through the tunnel. "Are you both okay?" you asked with a laugh as Bradley's hand found yours again.
"That was awesome," Bradley said, tossing Ev's new shirt over his shoulder as they emptied out of the tunnel and onto the ballfield. It was a perfect, clear day, and you heard John tell Everett he could run around anywhere except on the outfield. You watched your son take off like a rocket and run around the bases while you cheered for him. He looked so small out on a real infield.
"Oh, fuck it," Bradley said, and he took off running the bases too while you laughed and cheerer for both of them. Bradley caught up to Everett near home plate where you were standing, and after they both crossed the bag, he scooped Everett up into his arms.
They were both out of breath as Bradley said, "You'll have to get used to running that far if you're a power hitter."
"I can do it," Everett told him, and they had gigantic, matching smiles on their faces.
You snapped a few more photos, and then John asked, "Want to throw some pitches?" He handed Bradley a few pristine baseballs, and he and Everett took off toward the pitcher's mound. You stood off to the side as Bradley got Everett set up and in position with one of the balls. Then your son threw a pitch that didn't quite have enough force behind it to make it all the way to home plate, but it was thrown so accurately, you watched it roll to where the batters normally stood.
"Wow! Great job, Ev! Very accurate!" you shouted, thoroughly impressed. He threw a second pitch, and it was just as good as the first one. Then you watched Bradley trade places with him and wind up to throw what you thought was a slider. It sailed beautifully past home plate and bounced off the advertisement signs. He threw a second one that looked like a fastball.
"Hey! You're good!" said John as Bradley and Everett ran from the mound to home plate. "Did you play?"
"Just in college," Bradley replied, collecting the balls so John didn't have to. "A long time ago."
"He's a tee ball coach!" Everett announced. "He coaches my team!"
You didn't know if you could remember a time Everett looked this happy, and you felt like you were going to cry. This wasn't a one off. You needed this kind of day to happen again. Maybe not on the grand scale of gallivanting around Petco Park like VIPs, but you needed more days in the park getting ice cream. You needed more pizza nights. You need to have Bradley touching you at the batting cages and making love in his Bronco.
"Come here, Kitten," he called, waving you over. "I want a picture of the three of us on home plate."
You closed the distance to them, and Bradley tucked you against his side with Everett in front of both of you. John took some pictures with Bradley's phone, and you let your head rest on his shoulder. "Thank you for doing this," you whispered, leaning up to kiss his cheek. "He's in heaven."
"So am I," Bradley replied softly before kissing your lips. "I didn't do anything though. All I did was mess up, Kitten." He was being sincere, and you knew it. You thought you'd have to be an idiot to not forgive him. When John handed his phone back to him, you wrapped your arms around Bradley's waist.
"Cute family photos," John remarked, and Everett turned to see you in Bradley's arms.
"Thanks," Bradley replied as he rubbed your back. "Hey, Ev, why don't you run the bases one last time, kiddo?"
"I'll time you," John told him, setting the stopwatch on his phone and telling Ev when to start.
You looked up at Bradley and whispered, "I forgive you." He squeezed you tighter and let out a deep sigh of relief that made you smile. "And not just because today is perfect, but also because Everett and I are both attached to you, so you better not mess this up."
His lips were on yours in the sweetest kiss that had you reaching for more as he pulled away. He kissed you a little harder and whispered, "I'll be so good to you. Both of you," against your lips. You knew he was telling the truth.
------------------------------
Bradley was trying to stay calm, but it was nearly impossible. You were sitting two seats away from him, eating some nachos and smiling at Everett. Whenever your eyes met his, Bradley sighed in relief. He would ask you to be his girlfriend later tonight after the game. He was completely ready for that. Ready to be around for you and Everett.
"Thanks, Bradley," Ev told him, and Bradley managed to get a napkin under Everett's hot dog before it could drip ketchup on his jersey. "This is probably the best day I've ever had."
It was only the bottom of the first inning, but the Phillies were already leading by one run. The day had been perfect up to this point, but Bradley desperately wanted them to win for Everett. "Probably the best day I've ever had, too, kiddo."
The smile that touched your lips before you bit into a chip had Bradley grinning too. And as the innings wore on and the sun started to set, the stadium lights glowed to life. Everett was sitting on the edge of the seat when the Padres had the bases loaded, and it was all up to the pitcher that had autographed his shirt to save it for the Phillies. Without a word, Everett scrambled onto Bradley's lap to get a better view, and they both held their breath as the pitch count reached three balls and two strikes.
"Come on," Bradley muttered, wrapping his arm around Everett's middle. When the pitcher struck out the batter, Bradley jumped to his feet with Everett, and they cheered with the few other Phillies fans sitting in the section. "Still have the lead!"
You were sitting in Everett's vacant seat when Bradley settled down with Ev on his lap again, and he wrapped his arm around your shoulders. "You boys having fun?" you asked.
"Yep!" Everett said, clapping as the Phillies shortstop walked up to bat.
Bradley leaned in and kissed your cheek, his mustache tickling your ear. "We should do this all the time. At least until he gets to see every team play the Padres."
"And what if he decides he likes a different team better than the Phillies after he sees them all?" you asked, and Bradley scoffed.
"Do we look like fair weather fans?" he asked, gesturing to himself and Everett. "No. That's not going to happen, Kitten."
You laughed and leaned in to kiss him. "You're right. What was I thinking?"
"If the Phillies make it to the playoffs, we'll go to Philadelphia and watch them play and eat cheesesteaks and meet the Phanatic in person," he told you with conviction.
"Yeah, mom," Everett agreed, never taking his eyes off the game. "Because the Phanatic only goes to home games."
"Yeah, Kitten," Bradley echoed. "The Phanatic only goes to home games."
"You're both ridiculous," you said, but your smile was wide as you let your head rest on his shoulder.
---------------------------
You felt a tinge of disappointment as the Padres managed to tie the game in the eight inning. Everett was squirming a bit on Bradley's lap in anticipation, and Bradley had his fingers laced with yours.
"Do you want to switch laps, Ev?" you asked, and both Bradley and Everett replied with a firm No.
But Everett hopped off of Bradley's lap when the inning ended, and it didn't escape your attention that his gaze settled on your joined hands on the armrest. "I'll only be a little bit sad if the Phillies lose, okay? Because I'm having a lot of fun." Then he climbed back on Bradley's lap as you chuckled.
"Me too, kiddo, but wouldn't it be great if the Phillies hit a homerun to win the game?" he asked, straightening out Everett's cap.
"That would be so cool," Everett agreed as a new batter came up to the plate for the Phillies.
You pulled Bradley closer, and he gave you his undivided attention. You kissed his lips softly and said, "I think you're right. I want to do this all the time, too." Bradley's lips curled into a smile as he nodded, so you continued with a smile of your own. "The Padres play the Pirates here on Ev's birthday next month. So maybe we can do this again? I know it would be a late game, since it's during the week, but we could see if Molly and Bob want to come too. It could be really fun. What do you think?"
Bradley let go of your hand and wrapped his warm fingers around your neck, pulling you closer until your hand found his cheek while he kissed you. You moaned softly against his lips, you'd missed him this way so much. Then his nose bumped yours as he released your lips but kept you close to him. "Kitten, I think I love you."
"Look!" Everett shouted, and both you and Bradley turned to see what was going on. The echo of the solidly hit ball was still in the air as Bradley dumped Everett onto your lap and stood. You managed to stumble to your feet with Everett as Bradley jumped and caught the Phillies home run ball with his bare hand while the player rounded the bases to the sound of everyone in your section cheering. Then you watched as Bradley toppled over the armrest and into the aisle with a look of elation mixed with terror on his face.
"He caught it!" Everett cheered, launching himself onto Bradley who was trying to sit up awkwardly on the stairs. But he smiled and hugged Everett, handing him the ball while he clenched and unclenched his hand.
"Are you okay?" you asked, laughing as Bradley stood with Everett hanging onto him.
"Yeah, Kitten," he grunted, kissing your lips while everyone cheered. "Just gonna be a little sore. Damn, my hand hurts," he said, shaking it out again. The three of you were being featured on the big screen as they showed a replay of Bradley jumping up over and over again.
"Dad of the year!" the guy across the aisle shouted to Bradley, and you couldn't stop smiling.
"Thanks, man," Bradley replied with a laugh as he sat down. Everett had Bradley in a headlock as he examined his souvenir baseball with wide eyes.
"Wow," Everett said over and over again. "You're good at catching too, Coach."
"I'll teach you everything I know, kiddo."
"That was insane," you whispered, and Bradley laughed.
"I had to catch it. That was a once in a lifetime ball."
Everett was distracted by the end of the game as you leaned in close and pressed your lips to Bradley's. "I think I love you too, Coach."
------------------------
Bradley hadn't stopped touching you for a single moment. He was a little sore from landing on his ass in the aisle, but he honestly couldn't remember a better day in recent memory. When the game ended in a victory for the Phillies, Everett hugged him tight, but Bradley kept his hand wrapped around yours.
When Everett scrambled onto your lap for a hug, you asked him, "Do you want to come back for your birthday? We haven't seen the Pirates play yet."
"Yeah!" Everett cheered, clearly running on a Phillies high. But by the time the three of you were exiting the ballpark, Bradley scopped Everett up and carried him. All of the excitement of the day seemed to have the kid running on empty all of a sudden. When the three of you finally empied out into the parking lot with the rest of the crowd, Everett was mostly asleep in his arms.
"He's wiped out," Bradley told you with a laugh. You had your hand wrapped around his waist, your fingers rubbing his side, and Bradley couldn't stop grinning.
"All the excitement caught up to him." You took the keys from Bradley's pocket and went ahead to unlock the Bronco and open the back door. Bradley carefully deposited Everett into the booster seat and buckled him in as his eyes opened briefly.
"I'm tired," Everett mumbled, and Bradley laughed as he kissed his forehead. "I know, kiddo. Love you." Then he closed the door and you were reaching for him in the shadows of the parking lot, pressing your body to his and kissing him just like he had become accustomed to. He had missed you so much.
He pushed you up against the back door of the Bronco, and you gasped as he sucked on your neck. Your body felt warm against the chill of the night air, and Bradley's hands found their way up inside your shirt. "Kitten," he moaned below your ear. You had one hand wrapped around his neck, and the other was pressing against the fly of his jeans. You could make him go insane. "Kitten, baby, I can't get enough of you."
"Take us home," you demanded. "And stay with me."
"God, yes," he agreed, and then you were climbing in the driver's door and crawling across the seat.

Assigning WHB demons plants/flowers based off the vibes: Abyssos
⟡ Masterlist ⟡
A/N: I think I need to start attending some botany classes again bc from the way these post are turning into me rambling about plants i can tell I miss it :D
─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ───
Tumblr media
Nepenthes rajah
I don't think this plant has a common name, but if it did it would be smth like Rat/Mouse eating pitcher plant
Bc that's exactly what the plant does
It's just big enough for the small rodent to climb into and never see the light of day again
This also probably explains why I picked it for Beel
I mean, he literally eats angels whole
(I find pitcher plants really cool bc they're literally just a pitchers filled with digestive fluid, but they're not necessary carnivorous - some life off of animal droppings or insects)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
       ༺☆༻
Tumblr media
Venus flytrap - Dionaea muscipula
At first i was gonna include maybe some other pitcher plant or completely different plant...
But then again, Bael is literally catching the King of flies on daily basis
Idk why, but looking at pics of the open leaves is really calming to me
Having them is kinda cool bc sometimes you just walk past and see one of their leaves closed bc it caught a fly and you'll feel kinda proud of your little baby for catching something
From my experience they don't close when you give them dead one, though
They might also be a bit harder to keep alive...
Mine made it few months, but then bloomed and died shortly after I cut the flower off (similar thing also happened to my friend who specialises in succulents and carnivorous plants so I don't think I did anything wrong)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
       ༺☆༻
Tumblr media
Poison Ivy - Toxicodendron
At first I was thinking I'll give Stolas something bird-named, but I really wantd somethinig that looks harmless, and the moment you mess with, you're in for a lot of pain
And this plant baby delivers
I've never had the misfortune of meeting it, but I haver heard the stories
For those who don't know: Contanct wiht the plant gives you a nasty rash, sometimes with some blisters
Interestingly, looking it up on wikipedia, there's even what would happen if you smoked or eaten it....
As if you'd wanna do that after getting a rash just touching that thing
(You skin is pretty much reacting to the oil on the leaves, so after you come to contact make sure to wash it off or you'll spread it on other things too)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
       ༺☆༻
Tumblr media
Hypoestes
I can only talk about this moody beauty from experience since there isn't much info online
From what I've found there's about 150 scpecies in this family
Doesn't require much sunlight, but needs water
And oh boy, the amount of water...
The reason why I picked this plant for Amon is how easy it is for the leaves to start drooping
Just like him being constantly tired
But oh boy, the drooping... One minute she looks good and then two minutes later she's on the verge of death
It's not good to have planters just sitting in water bc of the risk of mold, but this one might just need it
Tumblr media Tumblr media
       ༺☆༻
Tumblr media
Common Ivy - Hedera Helix
Originally I wanted to go again with a plant based off his animal form, but then while writing for Amon, I saw normal Ivy
The ultimate Dark Academia plant that looks so good growing around anything
It's perfect for a demon they sometimes call Class President
I really love Common Ivy bc of how much you can use her for
Amazing use for Ivy is putting her into floral arrangements and the amazing thing is that it'll mostly keep its color as long as it's not left out in the rain or your glue gun set on too high temperature
Fun fact: The leaves of the plant are different on normal branches from the branches with a flower

Scout x reader who's never been to a baseball game before (ROMANTIC)
(I was bored and wrote this, I actually have been to multiple baseball games before but my ass still doesn't know anything about it. Reader's gender neutral as always. Trying to get better at writing oneshots so have this ig :/ Word count: ~1400)
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
It was strangely calm that day, it was one of the occasional days off that the mercs had. You sat on your bed, reading through some random magazine you’d picked up here or there when your boyfriend Scout barged in. “Hey doll!”
You continued flicking through the pages of the magazine, not flinching. You’d gotten used to this after a year of knowing him and two months of dating him. The door might as well not have existed at this point. “Yes?”
“Wanna go to the game today? With me?” he said, flashing you two tickets in his hand.
“What kinda game?” You looked up.
“Only the best game to be created,” he said with a smirk. “Baseball.”
You shrugged. “Sure, I don’t have anything else to do—” you barely got out before you were tackled with a hug by Scout, your magazine falling somewhere on the bed as you were wrapped up in his arms. “Jesus, you’re that excited, huh?”
He only chuckled and kissed your cheek. “Hell yeah I am! I get to have my two favorite things, baseball and you, dollface.”
You roll your eyes and give him a kiss on the cheek back, relaxing into his arms for a moment as you soak up his warmth. “...wait, am I below baseball?”
“Uhh…”
ੈ♡˳
“Bye Engie! Thanks for the ride!” Scout yelled out as Engineer drove away in his pickup truck, leaving the two of you to the sea of people waiting to get in despite the insufferable heat.
“Geez, are there normally this many people at these things?” you said as you held onto Scout’s hand to not lose him as you walked to the back of the line for the ticket booth.
“What, ya never been to a baseball game before?” he said with a laugh. It was a rhetorical question from his perspective, but not for you.
“No.” Scout’s jaw dropped.
“W- whaddya mean you’ve never been to a baseball game before, w- why? How?” In his mind, baseball was the most amazing game in the world, and it was simply a crime that the most amazing person in the world had never seen it.
You shrugged. “Just never did.” Scout was full of feelings about this. On one hand, you were his dollface and it hurt that you had been deprived of one of the greatest pleasures life could offer. On the other hand, he got to be the guy to introduce you to your first baseball game, which had the same significance as a first kiss. In his mind at least.
“D’ya at least know the game? Like, how it works?”
You thought for a moment before saying: “Um, you hit balls and run a lot?”
Hoo boy. Scout sighed. “I mean- you ain’t wrong but ya ain’t right. Listen doll, so there’s nine guys on each team, right? And one of the guys is the pitcher for the inning. The pitcher, he’s the fella who . . .”
ੈ♡˳
“. . . and then the outfielders, once you have those fellas you can get somethin’ called a line drive where it hits right to ‘em without touchin’ the ground–”
It had twenty non-stop minutes of Scout explaining the entire concept of baseball to you, and if you heard another way a ball can be thrown you were gonna snap. You took his face in your hands and kissed him before another move could be explained.
His ears flushed red and he froze for a moment after you pulled away. “Uh, what was that all about, doll?”
“I love you but if I hear another word about baseball I’m gonna lose it. Can I just watch the game with you and enjoy it that way?” you ask.
“Fine, fine—” he cuts himself off as the two of you are both hit with the realization. You said I love you. Shit, shit, shit shit shitshitshit!
Before you can stammer out a sorry or any other form of explanation, the woman in the ticket booth says “Next!” and you’re left to panic while Scout gives her the tickets.
We’ve only been dating for a few months, is that weird to say? It must be, he didn’t say it back. Maybe he didn’t hear me? No, he definitely heard me. Oh god, I fucked this up bad, fuck—
“Hey dollface, she said we can go in, c’mon,” he said with a smile, squeezing your hand and leading you into the stadium. You two found a spot in the bleachers, luckily under the shade of an awning. You nervously bounced your leg as you prepared for the game to begin.
He’s not treating me any differently, maybe he’s just gonna ignore that I said that. Please, god just ignore it.
“Geez, real anxious to see the game, huh doll?” he said to you with a smile.
“Yeah, yeah.” Maybe this would all be okay, another normal date. Just ignore that gross feeling in your gut and it’ll be fine.
ੈ♡˳
It was not all fine. Everytime the word ‘love’ came out of Scout’s mouth you couldn’t help but feel a growing annoyance. And he said it a lot.
“Man, I love that guy!”
“ —fuckin’ love this hot dog—”
“Love the view, right doll?”
It’s like he was rubbing it in. The gross feeling, the loud noise and the tight packed crowd all teamed up to give you a headache. Great. You distracted yourself from the feeling by leaning into him and eating your popcorn, desperately trying to understand the game in front of you. Maybe you should have listened a little more to your boyfriend’s explanation. “You cold dollface?
“Nah, just tired and have a little headache, ‘m fine,” you said as you popped another piece of popcorn in your mouth.
He wrapped his arm around you so you could have more support. “We, uh, don’t have to stay if you don’t want to, y’know. It’s the bottom of the fifth if you wanna get out of here.”
“No, no, it‘s fine, gotta stay for my first baseball game. Besides, isn’t that rude to just leave?”
“Naw, it’s fine. ‘S pretty normal not to stay the whole nine innings for your first game. ‘Sides, I don’t want you to feel like shit. We could go to a game some other time, how’s that sound?”
You smiled softly. “Sounds perfect.”
“Good, now c’mon,” he said as he picked you up in his arms to carry you out of the stadium.
“Jeremy, my head is the thing that hurts, not my legs. I can still walk, you doofus,” you laughed. He kissed your forehead.
“Whatever you say, sweetcake, but I’m still carryin’ ya.”
ੈ♡˳
It was dark out, and Jeremy had just finished calling Engineer on the pay phone while you sat on a nearby bench: Scout’s jacket draped over you. Only a few people milled about, leaving to their cars underneath the street lamps.
Jeremy sat down next to you, reaching to hold your hand. “Engie’s gonna be here in ‘bout ten minutes...you alright doll?”
You delicately took it. “I dunno…”
“Did anything happen?”
“I mean, kinda? It’s stupid though, dunno why I’m getting so focused on it.”
“Can you tell me?”
You took a deep breath and looked at the concrete. “Well, I don’t know if you actually heard me, but earlier I accidentally said that I love you. I- I mean, not accidentally, I do, but it just, y’know, slipped out.”
“I heard you doll,” Scout said, tilting your face up to look at him.
“Then why didn’t you say anything? I mean, I get if you don’t love me yet, I’m not gonna blame you, but just say something.”
“I didn’t say anything because I didn’t know if you were bein’ serious, doll,” he said, scratching the back of his neck. “Y’know, you’re amazing and sweet, and almost every time I’ve liked someone this fantastic they’re just with me for laughs.”
“Jeremy…we’ve been dating for two months, did you really think that I don’t care about you?”
“Well I mean, two months right. I kinda thought you would’ve already said ‘I love you’ by now, so just- I dunno. . . do you actually love me?”
“Of course I do, Jeremy, I just was nervous because I thought I said it too early,” you said, leaning closer to him, looking at how his face caught the light of the street lamp.
“I love you too,” Scout said with a dorky smile before pulling you close and kissing you. You probably would’ve kissed for much longer but the sound of a truck horn interrupted you.
“Hey lovebirds, get in!” Engineer shouted from the truck.
Scout pulled away and blushed before getting in with you, holding your hand tight the whole time.

Batter Up
Happy bday @llamagoddessofficial , most amazing person in the world :] I hope you enjoy baseball Ramattra kisses ehehehe
(Baseball Ramattra x F!Reader)
—————
You have a sip of your (intentionally) spiked punch, more to look distracted rather than actually wanting to drink the concoction. The Iris baseball team sat on the bleachers, lounging and chatting amongst themselves, (looking particularly masculine and attractive.) Ramattra, the largest of them all. sat further up, keeping to himself as usual. He throws his head back and chugs a can of Sparks Soda aggressively, before he slams the entire thing against his head and crushes it.
You grit your teeth. You would feel a little guilty for staring at him for so long, if the reason you were looking at all was because he stared first.
As if on cue, the omnic turns and looks you square in your eyes, and you almost spill your punch from the shock, quickly drinking it to avoid his eyes.
You don’t know what Ramattra’s unbroken gaze for you meant. The guy had quite the reputation for being a rough, aggressive type, while also being silent. He didn’t talk much to anyone beside his ‘brother’ Zenyatta, the pitcher of the team. It was obvious to see where he got said reputation from. Whenever he was on the field, he’d bat like a monster.
And whenever you watched him during his games, everytime he hits and gets to a base, he would always look for you in the crowd and stare. Just like he’s doing tonight. You came to the party earlier than the baseball team, and when they walked in it’s like Ramattra was surprised to see you there, and after he sat, he didn’t even try to hide his glaring from you.
You’ve been checking every now and again to see if he was still looking. He always was. The only reason you were able to look at him uninterrupted for so long in the first place, was because one of his mates called on him to ask him something. You can’t quite make out what he’s saying, but you’d recognize Ramattra’s soft, digitized growling voice anywhere.
“Hey, you ok?” Vitri gently prods you. The omnic was wearing a tux-patterned t-shirt and a costume store-bought tophat, and looking at him gave you a bit of levity from how ridiculous he appears.
“You’ve been really quiet.”
“Sorry, it’s just… it’s Ramattra. He’s been staring at me all night. And I mean I know he always stares but- am I crazy? He’s really looking at me right?”
Vitri turns towards the men sitting on the bleachers and hisses. “No, yeah, he’s definitely looking at you.”
“Why’s he always doing that? Does he have some beef with me or something I’m not aware of?”
Vitri’s finger clink against his chin. “Actually… I’m not in the campus’ baseball community or anything but, I’ve heard from the grapevine that he likes you.”
“Ramattra? Likes me??” You laugh in disbelief. “I’m sorry but how? I heard he doesn’t like humans all that much,”
“That’s what I thought too, but I also heard that he likes you. I don’t know! Not like I’m friends with the guy, haha.”
“It’s… a bit hard for me to see. He has uh, ‘I want to kill you’ vibes. Have you ever experienced having someone hold a bat give you after hitting?”
“Eh, I guess not. Look, if he keeps bothering you like this, you need to confront him about it.”
“Ha! As if, even without the staring he’s already scary!”
“Yeah, well, if you’re up for it someday, I’ll back you up. I’m not letting some brute get away with making you feel unsafe, ok?”
That’s… actually really sweet. Right now other than the staring, the omnic hasn’t done anything too weird. Nonetheless, it gets you to smile. “Thanks Vitri. I’ll hold you to it,”
Vitri nods.
“Well, I’m going to get some more more of that cocktail Neela’s making. I don’t know what she has in them other than Refizer but damn, it’s so good. Don’t mind me if I get buzzed later,”
“Go ahead,” you tell him, while swirling your unfinished punch, “I’ve still got this to finish.”
You lean against the wall and look away from the… distractingly intimidating omnic, at the rest of the room. There’s a group of girls, humans and omnics on the other side of the bleachers, chatting among themselves, their bright phone screens shining on their face, tittering. There’s a human couple on the same table as an omnic table clinking their glasses together. Vitri was at Neela’s drink station and the omnics were in discussion with a human girl- apparently Neela could make human drinks too, impressing her.
It wasn’t a high bar or anything, but it makes you grateful to have picked a uni that fosters a healthy human-omnic environment.
Now that you’re not looking at the scary baseball player, you enjoy your drink more. It’s still cold, and there’s a blend of soda and something fruity in it that tastes refreshing. You think you’ll need to ask Neela about her blends sometime.
Someone taps your shoulder. You turn around expecting Vitri to be back with his drink, but instead you’re faced with an unpleasant face.
Mick stands there, his weight on one foot, swiping his hair ‘candidly’. You certainly weren’t expecting him to ever approach you. Why was he even here? This party felt a little too low-key for the likes of him.
“Hey, what’s up girl? What’re you doing all alone here? Your boyfriend ditch you?”
“Vitri’s not my boyfriend, and he’s just over there. I’m just trying to enjoy myself here,”
“Hey, isn’t that what everyone’s trying to do in this life? We’re just trying to get the little pleasures in life before we die…”
Why is he trying to get all philosophical? Was this his idea of hitting a girl? You don’t know what is it about him, but him standing so close to him makes the air feel… itchy. He makes your skin feel hot and prickle, less like romantic blushing and more like you fell into a bush of nettles.
“Haha, I guess,” please leave please leave please leave-
“Hey, since we’re here, why don’t you and I go somewhere private and have some of that ‘little joys in life’?”
And there it was. Mick was well known for sleeping around a lot, and you heard him and his little gang liked to make a challenge out of it, which… you didn’t think real people like that existed, yet here you are.
You scoffed. “What the hell dp you think you’re doing right now? Sorry, but I think you looked in the wrong place. Go to a club or something, not a campus get-together,”
“Aw, c’mon babe, I’m not always a hardcore partier. I like a good time no matter where it comes from! I heard nerdy girls can get freaky too,”
I’m going to be sick, you thought to yourself. This must be one of those ‘challenges’ you’ve heard about. You can’t imagine why else he would be here.
“Look- you don’t even know my name, Mick. No, don’t even try. I’m not looking for a one-night stand, ok? Go try your luck somewhere else people are trying to enjoy themselves, in peace,” you emphasized with your fingers.
His face scrunched into irritation, and you’re glad, because there’s finally some mutual ground you could stand on. He drops his ‘flirting voice’ into something more natural and authentic- even if it sounded nasty.
“Come on. I know you’re not some dead-inside loser. Stop acting like you’re all high and mighty for rejecting me, you could use a guy to change up that bitchy tone of yours-”
You were about to start yelling when his hand reaches for your shoulder, but he stops. He looks over your shoulder and you could see the blood draining from his face.
A hand settles on your shoulder, distinctly metal.
“... Leave.” A dangerously soft voice spoke from behind you. Without another word, Mick scrams, running off with a tail between his legs.
You almost want to run yourself, recognizing the voice. You can’t believe that out of everyone, he came to your rescue.
“Ramattra?”
His face was shadowed by the cap he still had on. His height meant that at this distance, you had to tilt your head up towards him. Normally the fact that omnics couldn’t change their expression without augmentation didn’t bother you, but Ramattra was especially hard to read.
“Um, thanks for coming to my rescue,” you smile at him. He nods at you.
The sounds of metallic footsteps clues you into the fact that Vitri was running towards you, and he quickly stands in between you and Ramattra. The batter backs away, giving him space.
“Hey!” Vitri yells, “You keep away from her-!”
“No- no Vitri it’s ok! It’s all solved now, Ramattra just fended off a creep.”
“I- … he what?” Vitri stares at you incredulously, looking back at Ramattra. The omnic stands unwaveringly.
“Oh, um, then. Thank you. For keeping her safe,” Vitri ‘coughs’, correcting himself. “So you’re good here?”
“Yeah, we’re fine Vitri. Thanks for worrying.”
“Ok. If you’re sure, I’ll be back with Neela, unless you want me to stay?”
“Uh…” you look at Ramattra, who’s standing as if he was addressing a military leader. “It’s ok Vitri, go ahead. I think I’m going to chat with Ramattra for a while, if that’s fine with you, I mean?”
Ramattra tilts his head, you assume a ‘yes’, and Vitri, being an omnic you know well, looks at you with shifty eyes.
“Ok. I’ll leave you two alone, then,” He emphasizes, a teasing tone in his voice that leaves you wanting to smack him, before he promptly returns to the drink station.
For the first time since he drove Mick away, Ramattra addresses you. “(Y/n). Can we go outside? It’s loud.”
“Oh. Yeah, sure,”
Normally you’d be afraid to end up having to confront Ramattra alone, thinking back to the times where you’d pass him alone in the hallway and pointedly looking at the floor. But the way he made Mick run made you feel safe. Maybe it was quick judgement on your part, but you’d really like to trust him.
It wasn’t as if his apparent attractiveness escaped your notice.
You went outside the basketball court. It was on a floor slightly higher than the ground, and that gave you a short ‘balcony’ area with railings. At night it was nice and private, the street lamps of the campus few and far between, giving you just enough light but not enough to distract. You and Ramattra find a bench which you sat on. Politely, Ramattra sits half a space away from you.
You sat there with him in silence. Every once in a while he would move, you assume to speak, but he’d stop. He didn’t know where to put his hands, putting them beside him then on his lap, then back beside him. If you didn’t know any better, you’d think he was being shy.
“Something on your mind, Ram?”
He starts. “What did you call me?”
“Oh- uh, sorry. It was the first nickname to come to mind, I didn’t mean to offend,”
“No, no. I like it. Everyone on the team calls me that.” He assures you. “I was just looking at the stars,”
You look up to the sky with him. “The stars?”
“You can see them here, but it makes me miss home. You can see much more of them there. I used to count them with my brother,”
“You have a brother?”
“Zenyatta. Brothers by name, not blood.”
“I see,” you didn’t know that, but it makes sense. Out of everyone, Ramattra seemed to be closest to the star pitcher. “I miss the stars back home too. The air is much clearer and there’s so little lights around you can see the whole milky way. I’d never dream to count the stars there- but I liked to lay on a blanket outside, and see how many constellations I could find that night.”
“Constellations,” Ramattra repeats, “I’d like to learn about your constellations one day. We have constellations too,”
“R-really?!”
Ramattra points to the sky.
“That’s the dragonfly.”
It was a chain of 5 stars as its body, with a few stray ones around it as its wings.
“I didn’t know omnics had different constellations,” you say with awe.
“I could teach you more of them, sometime,” Ramattra offers, “If you teach me yours,”
“That sounds fine to me,” you nod at him.
You spend a bit longer in silence. The tension was thinner now, that he spoke. It was weird, hearing the normally wordless omnic get so chatty. Somehow, it made the omnic seem less intimidating, less like the campus ghost that haunted the hallways and frequently frightened passerby. He was a person.
“Hey,” you say at length. “Can I ask you something?”
Ramattra nods.
“Uh,” now that you’re actually doing it, you could feel your heartbeat rise to your throat, and you swallow. “Why… why are you always staring at me?”
He sputters, and you quickly try to explain yourself.
“I-I mean, you’re always looking at me, whenever I see you. In the hallway, at the campus cafe during lunch, a-and when I watch the games!”
You’ve never seen the man so bashful before. Ramattra had pulled his cap to cover his face and was turtling into his uniform. How can someone so big act so small?
Ramattra coughs, and you never realized a cough could sound so handsome.
“I am so sorry about that,” he apologizes, sounding defeated. “I’ve always liked you, (Y/n). But I’ve been waiting for the right moment- or perhaps, I was too timid to speak to you. I wanted to confess to you here, tonight, more elegantly, but it that’s not what happened. I’m sorry,”
He. “You what?”
“I’m-”
“The rumors are true?!” You squeal in disbelief. Ramattra looks shocked, and leans towards you.
“Rumors? What rumors?”
“I mean, I literally just learnt about this like, ten minutes ago, but. Vitri said the omnics around this campus say you have a crush on me, or- or something,” you add in the end, suddenly feeling unconfident though the man just admitted to liking you.
He stares at you, similarly to how he always did. You’ve never seen it so close, though. Even with the context, it’s no wonder you were intimidated by him. He was intense.
“Zenyatta…” he mutters, before he adds “It’s true. I like you,”
You falter under his eyes.
“O-oh,” you giggle, your cheeks warming. “I uh, I always thought you were gonna kill me or something, haha,”
“What? Why?”
Was he that unaware of how he was coming off to you?
“Because you were always glaring at me! Especially when I watched the games, you’d be staring at me… while holding a bat. What was I supposed to think?”
“Oh,” he leans away from you, “I’m sorry. I didn’t want to be intimidating.”
“Then, what were you trying to do?”
Ramattra… steams? There was a gush of air from everywhere in his body, not just his mouth, and you could hear his machinery clicking inside him before they settle.
Huh. I’ve never seen that before.
“I was,” he sounds hesitant. “I was trying to gage your expression. Everytime I did good on the field, I wanted to know what you thought. It makes sense now why you looked so unnerved,”
“Wait, hold on. Were you trying to… show off?”
He exhales, this time through his mouth.
“Oh my god,” you laugh, months of tension from perceived hostility draining out of you. “That explains a lot. I didn’t know you were cute,”
“You. You think I’m cute?”
You blush at the question. “I-I mean, well, it’s just not expected, you know? You’re this… cool omnic guy on the Iris team, one of the best. You’re so strong and cool- and you keep to yourself. You scare most people on campus. It’s just, you don’t expect that guy to be having a crush on you all this time, and that silent scary face was just shy.”
He’s silent for a while, staring at you. Then, “Do you like me?”
He asks so bluntly you stammer. “Y-yeah. I always thought you were handsome, you know, before you started acting scary. You’re a real attractive guy,”
“... You’re very pretty. And cute.” He breathes.
If your eyes could twinkle, they definitely were.
“Th- thank you, Ramattra.”
He’s leaning in closer now.
“Can I,” he murmurs, “Can I kiss you?”
You didn’t know omnics breathed, like, really breathed. You could feel it on your face with how close he was. With anyone else, it’d be too close for comfort and you’d loudly deny that request, but… for some reason, with Ramattra, you could only feel your cheeks getting redder, and your heart pounding in your ears. You’ve never kissed an omnic, and you find yourself staring at his mouth.
Not knowing why, you answer, “... Yes.”
Ramattra moves. He gets up from his seat and stands in front of you, taking his hat off, scrunched in one of his hands, before bracing them on the back of the bench, on either side of you. He’s so close to you, you could see the optics in his faceplate, his eyes peeking from within their slits, looking deeply into yours. You feel goosebumps on your neck, his free, mechanical hand brushing hair behind your ear. His breath fans your lips, and you close your eyes as he closes the distance.
He kisses gently. You weren’t expecting that, you were expecting him to be a bit rougher, but no. You find yourself really enjoying this. He was surprisingly warm, and though you were expecting the sensation to be akin to kissing a flat metal sheet, he felt alive. He moves against your lips, the softest of presses against you. Despite the slow, soft way he was kissing you, you quickly find yourself becoming overwhelmed. Slow meant long, and he kisses you so tenderly and delicately that it felt… intimate. A private moment no one else is supposed to see, unspoken affection all directing at you.
When he finally pulls away from you, your mind is spinning. You looked up at him with new excitement, confusion, and something else. Ramattra doesn’t seem all that collected either, his breaths becoming more labored, his chest visibly rising and falling, his mouth slightly parted. When he pulls his hand back, he double takes at his hat, and it’s not hard to see why.
“R-Ramattra?” You say in alarm, “your hat..!”
As he peels his fingers from his hat, you could see how abused and crumpled it looked, thoroughly crushed. And when he pulls on the panels, you could see the omnic actually left puncture holes from where his fingers had pushed the hardest.
Instead of irritation however, Ramattra actually looks delighted.
“This… is great!” He exclaims, holding it up to the nearest light. “A memento of my first kiss.”
You sit there, staring up at him. “What,” you questioned, “do you mean that was your first?!”

Tumblr media
part one - part two - part three - part four - part five There was something living inside Joe’s chest.
It was only small, but definitely there. Ugly. Green. Growing. With potential to do real harm. It crawled around and scoped him out, exploring his heart from all different angles, carefully tasting it.
It hadn’t bitten him yet, but Joe knew if he lost sight of it – if he stopped trying to control it – that eventually, it would. And it would hurt. It didn’t exactly feel great now, but once it’d sink its teeth in, Joe knew he’d be done for.
He remembered when it still good. Still nice. Warm. And soft. And joyous, all full of love.
It used to be kind and sweet and would make him smile until his cheeks were quite literally cramping.
But it’d changed. It’d turned bad.
He wished he could’ve seen it coming.
It was a good thing that he found he was able to easily control it with rational thought. Problem was that rational thought had the habit of abandoning him once it got dark outside and he was alone in his flat.
His new flat.
Where everything was his.
Where everything got put in places that he chose. All his things were where he wanted them, all catering towards his routine. Which was why a basket of underwear made it into a bathroom cupboard, and why a shelf got put up near the balcony door, so he had a place to keep his cigarettes and a lighter. Gone were the days of rummaging through coat pockets ‘til he found what he was looking for.
It was sort of great, Joe wasn’t going to lie, living on his own.
It didn’t look quite as nice, not quite as homey, but Joe was sure he’d soon learn what the place was missing. He didn’t worry about it. There were more important things to worry about. Like, how quick dust built up into bunnies underneath the sofa and how every time he’d open his front door, it’d waft out from underneath, only to settle in the middle of the room for everyone to see. Or how somehow he panicked so much about keeping his plants alive that he was systematically overwatering all of them.
Idiot.
It was fine.
Rational thinking.
It was all fine.
Things were different now.
Good different.
“Oh, you shouldn’t have!” Joe joked as he let you in, pointing out the large bouquet of flowers in your hands.
His place already smellt amazing. Joe made a good roast, and had one going now, things in the oven, bubbling and simmering away.
“If I never did things I shouldn’t do, life would be very boring,” you said, laying the colourful bunch down on his island.
“Did... wait, did you actually get those for me?”
“Have you got a vase?” you were already opening cabinet doors. “You don’t, do you?”
When you didn’t get a reply, you turned to see Joe stare at the flowers. He looked a little dumbfounded.
“Joe?”
“Hmm?” he looked up at you and blinked a few times. “Oh, um...” he squeezed his eyes shut a second, trying to gather his thoughts.
Took too long, you thought.
“A vase?” you repeated, trying very hard to keep a straight face, to not let the smallest inkling of a smile slip through.
“Sorry, I don’t... I don’t think I’ve got a vase.”
Why the fuck would he own a vase, Joe thought.
“I’ll get you one as a housewarming gift,” you found a pitcher. “This’ll do for now.”
There was evidence on the counter of what Joe had been in the middle of, cutting veggies, preparing the gravy. But as you filled the pitcher with water, Joe still kind of hovered in the same spot in silence. Looked at the flowers that you’d brought in and felt silly for how those made him feel.
When you placed the pitcher in the middle of the island and reached for the bouquet, you broke his trance, and Joe softly laughed at himself.
“This is... my God, this is so sweet? I don’t think I’ve ever gotten flowers before.”
“Well,” you smiled back, about to throw stones into your own windows. “I didn’t get them for you.”
“Oh?” Joe immediately felt embarrassed. Mortified. Felt the skin of his neck flush with heat.
“I got them for your flat.”
Got him.
Joe let out the breath he was holding in defeat, dropping his head and smiling. Scoffed softly at himself because you were joking, and he was an idiot.
“You know, give it some colour. Give me something nice to look at when I’m here.” you plopped the flowers into the pitcher and didn’t get the chance to make it look nice, to arrange it a little, because before you could, you got picked up by the waist and shaken about. You shriek-laughed a loud, “No!”
“Something nice to look at?” Joe pressed his face into your cheek as you squealed through your giggles.
“Am I not nice to look at, huh?” Joe squeezed extra tight before he put you down, turning you in his arms and keeping you real close.
“You’re nice to look at,” you said sweetly, still grinning widely, nose nudging up at his. “If I could put you in a vase and arrange you all nice, I would.”
Joe snorted, and you felt it on your face.
“Hmm. You’re funny.”
You got kissed by soft lips that almost felt shy to kiss you.
“Don’t get me a vase.”
And then you got kissed a little harder. Bit more firm.
“I’ll get my own.”
“No,” you objected, speaking right into his mouth. “You’ll get a stupid one with like, frosted writing on, or something. Live, love, laugh.”
You felt Joe’s smile as he kissed you harder, both arms squeezing as they wrapped around your waist tighter. You sighed into Joe’s affection and took great comfort in the fact that you were alone. You were outside of your flat, which was still wild in your opinion, but at least you were alone.
Alone was good.
Joe’d gotten into the habit of showing affection when you were around others, around strangers, and you didn’t think you were ever going to get used to it.
The first time Joe reached to hold your hand, you’d nearly had a panic attack.
It wasn’t very cold, but the wind was cutting. Hurt your forehead as you walked and made you hunch as you pulled up your shoulders to shield yourself as best you could. Joe’s hand finding yours was a welcome warmth for your cold fingers, but it still made you fall silent as you tensed up.
Joe just held on for a few steps, and looked at you. You could see him stare from your peripheral, could feel the burn of it high up in your cheeks, and tried your best to ignore it.
“You can relax.” Joe humorously said, speaking softly and leaning in a little to make sure you could hear him.
“I am relaxed.” You immediately argued, because holding hands with Joe shouldn’t be weird. It should actually be normal. You tangled up with your full bodies more days than you didn’t when you shared a flat. If anything, Joe’s touches were exactly what turned you lax, all floppy and boneless.
“S’just cold.”
“Hmm,” Joe sounded unsure, very obviously not believing you, and squeezed your fingers a couple of times. When you didn’t smile, Joe let his own drop too, and asked if you were okay.
“Fine.” You reassured, growing a little defensive. If Joe could just stop talking about it, that’d be great.
“Should I– do you want me to let go?”
“No, it’s okay.” You said, sounding a little squeaky, but you doubled down with a squeeze of your own.
Joe took it, accepted it, albeit a little unsure if maybe he’d made the wrong move here. But you’d walked along, and you held hands, and when you fell into random conversation again, holding your hand became something Joe stopped thinking about. He absentmindedly rubbed his thumb along yours, and at one point used his grasp to pull you in front of him when you had to share a narrow bit of pavement with oncomers.
You weren’t like Joe.
Not for a single second had you been able to be as casual about it as Joe had been.
You focussed on your hand the whole while you walked, and couldn’t help but check to see if others were looking at it. If strangers that passed you looked down at your hands. To check if they could see. If they somehow knew that you’d never done this before.
You had.
But not like this. Not outside. Not in public.
It wasn’t that you didn’t want to hold Joe’s hand, but there was something about this new phase you were in, where Joe walked over to yours to pick you up to go out for dinner together. Where he had to ring the doorbell and ask if he could quickly come up to use the toilet before you left. Where he pretended he didn’t know where the bathroom was and made you show him the way. Where he faked being anxious when you left your flat, saying that he hoped you liked the restaurant he booked a table at. Where he nervously asked if you liked Italian food, as if you hadn’t shared a million pizzas together.
Things were different now, and although you were close, would often do everything you could to dissolve into his skin, walking hand in hand through the streets of London felt insane. Like you were moving too fast, even though you understood how silly that sounded.
You’d spent that entire walk thinking of a natural reason to let go of his hand, and Joe had felt your fingers twitch. Felt how you seemed to change you mind about it every three seconds. But, you’d said he could hold onto you, so, he simply did.
It wasn’t until you reached the restaurant and used the heavy door as an excuse to wiggle your fingers from Joe’s hand, using both of yours to pull it open.
Baby steps, Joe thought as he smirked to himself, astonished that he’d gotten to hold your hand out in public for over ten minutes.
He was sure you’d slap him away the second he even attempted to intertwine your fingers together.
Which, coincidentally, was exactly what you did the first time Joe tried to lean in for a quick peck on the lips as you said goodbye to each other outside of his flat.
You’d been out, and were both in a bit of a rush to get home. You thought that the way you’d hugged his arm for a second was plenty goodbye. You’d pressed the side of your face to his bicep and said you’d see him later.
You’d reached the point where you wanted to go cross the street as Joe would walk the other way to get to his front door, and when you tried to step away, he yanked you right back by the elbow.
The way you recoiled away from him was so extreme, it startled Joe. You almost made it look like he was about to hit you.
“Jesus,” he mumbled under his breath, and you immediately apologised. You stepped back closer to him, were about to accept a quick kiss as an apology, but let your eyes nervously dart around to see if there were other people. If there were witnesses.
Joe just looked at you, blinked a few times and then, instead of leaning in for a quick kiss, squeezed you in your side.
“Calm down. Call me when you get home.”
And you’d blushed at how Joe’d smiled at you before he turned to head inside. Your face had remained hot until you got home where you then had to take a moment to shake all the nervous jitters from your body.
It was such a weird spot to be in, Joe thought.
How he couldn’t get too close if there was the slightest chance of someone seeing, but to have you literally whine at him inbetween his sheets if he didn’t touch you in the right spot with the right pressure at the right speed.
But steps were being made in the right direction.
You each had you own place now, and Joe made a point to sometimes not see you for a few days. He kind of enjoyed getting to miss you. He liked how his stomach did flips when you’d ring his doorbell after not having been over for a few days. He liked how absence made his heart grow fonder, and how that felt healthy.
Joe assumed you felt the same way; maybe you didn’t like it as much as he did, but surely you also understood how this was at least more normal.
He never thought that what the two of you were before was toxic.
It was just... weird.
Good weird.
But this was better.
Still a little weird, he wasn’t going to lie. But better.
He got to tell you to call him when you got home now. He got to invite you over to his flat for Sunday roast now. And you would then come and bring him flowers now.
Joe had never received flowers before. Well, maybe he had. But not like this. Not from a girl who brought them just for him. Just because. He kind of loved it. Kind of loved you.
“God, you were right.” Joe said, eyes unblinking, comfortably staring.
Both satisfied and full after an early dinner, the two of you laid out on Joe’s sofa - the one that took six weeks and then two more to arrive - and both looked at the bouquet up on the kitchen island. You were tucked into his side, with one of his arms slung around your frame. You held one of his hands with both of yours and absentmindedly played with his fingers.
“I don’t know how this works but they kind of make the whole room look better.”
“They do.” You agreed, smiling, because you did that. You turned your head, tilting up to look at Joe’s face. “Please let me pick out a vase for you, though.”
Joe’s grin slowly grew as he said, “Absolutely not. Might just keep the pitcher for flowers only, I kind of like it.”
“Ugh,” you grimaced. “This is such a boy’s flat.”
“Well,” Joe started, raising his eyebrows, finally breaking eye-contact with the fresh bloom, tucking in his chin to look down at you. “I am a boy, so, that checks out.”
For a moment you just looked at each other, smiling, cuddled up into the corner like you always were cuddled up into the corner together. When you saw Joe flick his eyes down to your lips, you pulled the hand you were still holding closer to bite right into the skin between his index finger and thumb.
Joe pretended to flinch, but you were barely leaving marks as you smiled through the bite, big eyes looking up at him. Joe took a moment to just take you in. The way you looked at him had him biting his own lip before he tried to grab hold of one of your hands to pull into his mouth.
You were already scream-laughing and trying your best to pull your hand away before he even got close. It left you in a wrestling pile of limbs, Joe with his mouth open, growling and ready to bite at whatever got close enough. He ended up getting at bit of your sleeve in between his teeth, pinning you down into the soft seat-cushions and he felt drunk with joy.
He was so fucking happy.
Pretty girl in his flat, giggling away on his sofa, and she’d brought him flowers. It was kind of disgusting how he’d turned to goop on the inside.
Joe didn’t wait for your giggles to die out to get his lips on yours and kiss you silly.
There was something living inside Joe’s chest.
It was sticky and sugary sweet and Joe loved the taste it.
Loved how it bubbled over and leaked into his stomach.
Loved how it swirled into his limbs and made him reach for your hand to hold when you were walking outside.
Loved how it made him put his arm around your shoulders to pull you tightly into his side as you waited to get your coffees whilst the barista prepared them.
Loved how it grew as he took the lead on this new way of being together the way you had done before when you still lived together.
It made Joe want to introduce you to someone as his girlfriend, knowing full well that you hadn’t had that conversation yet, and that you’d likely have a melt down, but God.
It was just what he wanted to do, he couldn’t help it.
He wouldn’t.
There was a high probability that you’d actually murder him if he pulled a stunt like that.
The fact that you were kissing like this outside of your flat right now was already sort of stretching it, Joe knew.
You let Joe kiss you on his sofa for a minute. Let him slide his nose around yours with an open mouth that hovered over yours inbetween kisses. He made you work for it, having to lift up your head for more when he teased you for too long.
When you felt how Joe started readjusting his position on top of you, you knew you had to break it off.
“Hmm– Joe, no, I gotta–”
“Hm?”
“I gotta go, there’s– stop, there’s a potential flatmate coming over in a bit, I gotta– Joe!”
Joe finally broke away with an annoyed grumble leaving his throat as he did.
“Fine.”
“I can... I could always come back after?”
Joe shifted enough to let you escape the sofa.
“Hmm, you could, but I do have an early morning, so it’s probably not worth the trouble.” Joe sighed, lying back with an arm curled behind his head, watching you twist your clothes so it all sat right again.
“No?”
“I’ll probably be asleep by the time you make it back here.”
“Well,” you started, slinging your arms into your coat. “All depends on how long this is going to take. If it’s another 19-year-old trying to negotiate for a 30-70 rent split first thing, I’ll only be a second.”
“God, for your sake, I hope it’s not another student. But for my sake...” Joe made big eyes, giving you a suggestive look that broke into a smile when you laughed.
You gave Joe a last quick kiss as you bent over the sofa and told him you’d see him later, all casual.
Joe’s smile lingered as he watched you walk out.
“Call me when you get home!”
Yea... there was something living inside Joe’s chest.
And it was cuddly and fuzzy and comfortable and good...
For now.

Note
ur like the only person who depicts mlm astarion as a top and i am so grateful for ur existence 😭 i just can't see him preferring to bottom after being used like a fleshlight / having no bodily autonomy for 200 yrs that's just my take (controversial ik) obviously he can switch but id say there's generally a preference for either position at the end of the day 🤷 regardless ur art is amazing thnk u for existing and feeding the poor
I know you're just being a little facetious with your word choice here, but I do wanna take this opportunity to clarify that that's NOT the reason why I depict him as a top. I'm sure he's had sex in all the standard (and some not so standard) ways while acting under Cazador's command, and If you were to ask me, the joy and autonomy has been sucked out of all the acts and roles pretty equally.
Rather, after spending time with the character, that's just the vibe I got from him 🤷 Probably his go-to before ever being turned, and probably thinks it's very hot to fuck a guy thrice his size and bulging with muscle - there's a little blink-and-you'll-miss-it bit in ANE where Astarion asks DU drow if he can be the pitcher, and I consider that to be an important little character moment for him. He reminds me very strongly of a very particular subsection of flamboyant, twinkish homo; if you know, you know LOL
DU drow too. His reasons for bottoming actually have slightly more explicitly to do with control (or lacking it) but he does enjoy entrusting his partners with his body. You see that too with his relationship with Orin.
Not saying I'm right and you're wrong or that that's even 100% your implication here, just taking the opportunity to share my thoughts on the character and why I depict him how I do! I enjoy getting headcanons that are a little different from mine because they get me thinking about my own thought process a little more in depth.
Thank you so much for the message and your kind words! I'm happy to be providing the goods all the same LOL

Love Potion Number 9
Will 'Ironhead' Miller x female reader Co-written with @absurdthirst
Rating: M for Mature but this blog is always 18+ Word Count: 15.4k Warnings: Not too many! Alcohol, food mentions, some fakey suburban witchcraft stuff written by an actual pagan, probably incorrect descriptions of a town that actually exists. Making out and undressing. Mentions of protected sex. Summary: Halloween is a really big deal in your hometown, and this year your sister is in town to celebrate with you. But what you don't know is that she isn't the only old familiar face around. Your childhood crush Will Miller is back, too. Notes: Happy Spooktober everyone! We're starting off nice and fluffy this year, with a little love for the older Miller brother. We're starting the spice level out low 🧡
Tumblr media
Red Feather Lakes might be a small community, but for the little corner of Colorado where you grew up, Halloween is a way of life. The annual kids parade on Elf Lane, and Main Street Trick or Treat are the highlight of the year, and the costume party at town hall is not to be missed.
This year is the hundredth anniversary of the big Halloween shindig and on the night before, which is making such a splash around town that people are coming in from all over to see what the town council has managed. Even your little sister is back in town, which is how the two of you ended up on the back porch of your parents’ house drinking margaritas and eating cold pizza way too late at night, catching up and reminiscing about Halloweens of years past.
“Don’t you remember that night that Ben Miller scared the ever-loving shit out of us?” She snorts, feeling tipsy and better than she has in a long time. This little trip was needed. Especially since she has some news that might change the dynamic of the next time you get together.
“Which time?” You raise an eyebrow at her and pour the last of the pitcher of margaritas evenly between your glasses. While most of your friends — and even your little sister who is your best friend — had grown up and left town, you had come back again a few years ago after a change of careers. Seeing her again at any time of year that isn’t the winter holidays is such a treat. “The time he jumped out at us in that King Kong mask up in Elf Lane? Or the time he tried to climb in the kitchen window dressed like Freddy Krueger and dad nearly clobbered him with a baseball bat?”
The Millers were your next door neighbors growing up, and you had spent a lot of time together since you and Will were in the same grade and your sister was the same grade as Benny. For a while when you were kids, the four of you were inseparable.
“That time that he snuck in and grabbed our ankles from under the bed.” She laughs, even though at the time it hadn’t been funny. She had cussed him out and Will had actually knocked him upside his dumbass head a few times after he had calmed the two of you down.
Snorting at the memory, you take a big sip from your crazy straw and laugh from somewhere deep in your belly that you swear you had forgotten. "You screamed so loud you woke up Mrs. Peterson two houses down. It was amazing, but I still wanted to kick Benny's ass."
“Will did.” She rolls her eyes and takes a sip of her margarita. “I can’t believe it’s been so long. We were fucking kids. I think that’s the moment I lost my little crush on Benny.”
"When you realized he was never going to stop pranking you for shits and giggles?" Chaos has always been Benny Miller's energy. You will agree to that completely.
“Yeah.” She blows out a sigh and shrugs. “Worked out for the best, I guess. At least I don’t have to sleep with one eye open.”
"Maybe not the best..." You shoot your sister a smirk. "I heard from Janie Calitri that he's doing MMA fights now." Gossip is just about all there is to do in a town as small as yours, and that multiples exponentially when the gossip is about your small-town heroes. The Miller brothers are solidly near the top of that list. Everybody in town loves them and remembers them fondly. Even if Benny was a little shit.
“God.” She blows out a laugh that is half surprise but mostly resignation. “MMA? I guess that’s the next step after the army.”
"Seems like it." It isn't worth mentioning that you also heard in the same conversation that Will Miller is now a firefighter or personal trainer or maybe both. Janie hadn't been clear on the details except that she'd somehow seen a picture of him looking drool-worthy on Instagram shared by a gym. But Will Miller had always been drool worthy. Even when you were gangly, awkward teenagers.
“So, how are you liking living here?” She asks, taking another sip and glancing around the screened in porch and then back at you. “I know that wish I live closer - I do too, but please tell me you’ve been going out and dating?”
“Please tell me who I’m supposed to date in a town of less than five hundred people where we know everyone already and they all know us?” The best you can do is shake your head and take another long sip of your drink. “I don’t mind being back and I actually really like my job, but I basically hang out at home with the dog all day since I telecommute. Mom and Dad will probably never retire just because they hate being bored, And they go line dancing or to the movies or to the bowling alley all the time.” Snorting again, you shrug. “Our parents have a way more active social life than I do.”
“Come on, you used to have huuuuuuge crush on Will!” She yelps it out in disappointment. “You mean you didn’t jump him when he came home from the Army without that twat he was going to marry?”
There it is, you think with an internal sigh. The downside of having your little sister as your best friend is that she knows literally everything about your life — and the things she’s somehow missed she just barges into the middle of. “No, I didn’t. Though that girl was fucking awful.” She was some girl he’d met in a bar while he was in. Someone who just wanted to go around making sure everyone knew how important she was as an Army Wife, while not wanting to do a thing to help her serviceman partner. Will’s PTSD had been terrible back then and she had done less than nothing to help. The day he blacked out and almost attacked a man in the grocery store in town, it was you who talked him down and helped him out of the panic. Not her. She had gone back to the house and packed. “He’s moved again, anyway. He’s living with Benny in Florida.”
“What? No way.” She scrunches her nose and makes a face. “That sucks. You would have married him and had his babies in a New York minute if he would have looked at you.” She sighs softly. “Where in Florida?”
“Sarasota.” You answer far too quickly, and duck your head away and when she raises both eyebrows at you. “We…may follow each other on Instagram still. Not that we ever talk.”
“And how often do you stalk his page?” She demands, smirking slightly at the way you are avoiding eye contact.
“I see on my feed when he posts something new,” you defend, concentrating very hard on petting your parents’ dog at your feet. “I don’t go stalking him.”
“But I bet notifications are on.” She snorts and grins when you shove at her. Only tipping sideways slightly but manages not to spill her drink as she rights herself. “Yeah. You still drool over William Miller.”
“Childhood crushes die hard.” It’s a weak defense, and you would more accurately call him your first love, but she isn’t wrong. You definitely still drool over Will Miller.
“God, do you remember when we were going through that little goth phase and decided we were witches?” She cackles. “We should whip up that love potion we had a recipe – I mean spell for.”
“The foolproof one you got from some rando on MySpace?” It had sounded genius back in the day. Absolutely brilliant. To two preteens from a middle-of-nowhere mountain town, it had seemed perfect. “It was so useless, wasn’t it? With just cooking herbs and normal stuff in it?”
“Yes! But that’s not the point.” She sends you an exaggerated pout. “The point is to do something. Start working on your love life.”
The look you give her is incredulous at best. “By making…weird love spell tea to lure Will Miller back to Colorado and into my chronically single arms?”
“Absolutely!” She giggles like it’s the funniest phrasing she’s ever heard, but she wants to do it. “We should do something silly and fun. Doesn’t matter if it’s not going to work.” She grins. “We will just be summoning our Practical Magic sides again.”
Maybe it’s the margaritas. Maybe it’s that tomorrow is Halloween. Or maybe it’s just that you missed your sister. But whatever it is, you tilt your head to look at her and end up grinning. “If you tell me you wrote the love spell down somewhere I’m going to laugh my ass off.”
“Oh I made a Grimoire.” She tells you, looking both pleased with herself and a little embarrassed. “I was really into it!” She huffs when your eyes widen and she throws a napkin at you.
“You were, but do you think it’s still upstairs?” The idea, silly as it is, seems to itch something very intriguing in your tipsy mind.
“Let’s go see!” She drains the rest of her margarita and slaps the cup down. Now that you are not protesting the entire idea, she is ready to make this happen for you. “We will make Will Miller fall in love with you
******
"Come oooooon!" Benny is flopped on his back on the sofa in the apartment he shares with his brother, staring up at both the ceiling and at Will's incredulous face. "It's gonna be even better this year, and you pulled the short straw at work last year and couldn't come home with me for Christmas. Mom will flip her shit if you come home with me as a surprise. She'll be so excited dude."
“It’s Halloween.” Will snorts. “You’re just going to pass out or eat all the candy and scare the shit out of the kids.” He could go, but giving Benny a hard time right now is much more fun.
"Yes." Benny waves his hands, outstretched arms punctuating his point like a giant bird's wingspan. "Yes exactly. What else would I do on Halloween? It's going to be amazing." They grew up loving the holiday, loving their town's traditions, and always putting their full effort into costumes and parties. Halloween in Red Feather Lakes is really its own whole world. "Which is exactly why you should come home with me and enjoy yourself for once."
“I don’t find scaring the shit out of the neighbors to be a good time like you do.” He points at finger at his mischievous younger brother. “You climb under their beds this time and they’re liable to shoot your dumbass.”
Benny's face splits into a grin. "If that's what I gotta do to get your ass alone with her for any fucking reason, you bet your ass I'll do it." he promises, waggling his eyebrows suggestively.
“Who?” Will demands, even though he knows exactly who Benny is talking about. The same girl he has casually been bringing up for the past six months every time he talks about home. You.
"The girl you were in-fucking-love with for every year of your life ending in teen." Benny deadpans, and moves to sit up from his place on the couch. "Don't you ever want to find out if it could actually happen?"
“Except for the fact that she was never interested in me.” Will reminds him, knowing that it is a moot point once Ben Miller has made up his mind about something.
"I still don't buy that." The younger Miller brother sits up fully and somehow manages to spring up from his seat without a massive rush of dizziness. Pure luck. "Dude, just come home with me for the weekend. Mom will flip her shit to see you and cook whatever you want. Isn't that worth the trip in and of itself?"
“I haven’t had her meatloaf in a long time.” He admits, knowing that he could use the break from work and bullshit. Frankie is busy with his girl and the babies and there isn’t a fight coming up for a few weeks. “But I don’t know.” He shrugs. “Maybe I could just stay home. Have a break from you.” He teases.
"If you stay here, Pope is gonna drag your ass to some club to wingman for him." Benny points out, already smirking victoriously. "Mom's meatloaf or Pope's cocky ass bullshit? It's not a hard choice, bro."
Will rolls his eyes, aware that he’s not lying. Santiago has already been talking about some club where the drinks are hot and the women even hotter. It’s not really Will’s kind of thing. “You’re driving.” He snorts, giving in.
Cackling with glee, Benny loops his arm around his brother's neck and pulls him toward the back of the apartment. "I already bought your plane ticket, asshole. You were coming whether you liked it or not, now pack! We gotta be at the airport in three hours!"
“Shit.” Will hisses at the impulsiveness of his brother, but he grins. He will take the weekend to recharge and refocus. If he just happens to chat with you and see how you’ve been, that will just be a happy coincidence.

Though you aren't technically hungover, the headache that has lingered all morning isn't going away as you head into town with your sister. Breakfast was a trial for her queasy stomach but she seems to be in lighter spirits now, chattering away as you head together toward town hall. Apparently she had thought it would be a blast to sign you up as volunteers to help decorate the place for the big Halloween party tonight, even though you aren't quite sure why.
“We just need to get the last ingredient while we are in town and we will brew the tea before the party.” She chatters happily after tucking her phone into her pocket and linking her arm through yours.
“And what, pray tell, is the last ingredient?” It had taken over an hour of routing through her old room and closet to find the teenage grimoire aside by that tins you had been exhausted. So it was agreed upon that the witching hour would be three in the afternoon instead of three in the morning like the lame, adult witches you now are.
“Fresh thyme to chase away the bad vibes of previous relationships to usher in true love.” She hums, shooting you a grin. “And I want a special shout out at your wedding.”
"You can give a speech and take credit," you promise her, rolling your eyes only gently. She seems utterly convinced that this will work and what the hell – it's been a long time since you did something dumb with your kid sister just for fun.
“Oh I absolutely will.” She snickers, bumping her shoulder against yours playfully. “And you will absolutely be doing Will.”
“You can see the future now?” You tease as town comes into sight. She’s so determined that you have half a mind to ask if she’s been conspiring with Benny.
“No.” She rolls her eyes. “I wish. I would be hitting the lottery just often enough to not be suspicious.”
“We’d become aces in sports betting.” Much good may it do you. Having enough money to take care of yourself didn’t make your last relationship work.
“Yep. One hundred percent.” She snorts, knowing her team always loses. “Become ladies of leisure and live on that round the world cruise ship. Place our bets online and live off the proceeds.”
"That's the retirement plan." You tell her sagely, and the two of you end up in giggles as you park the car on Main Street, halfway between town hall and the general store. You'll need both before you head home again.
“Plus I figured we could get some of those Halloween sugar cookies.” She admits with a grin. “And a last minute bag of mini KitKats.”
"That's why you're my favorite sister." The grin you beam in her direction is bright, and because she's your only sister, you're both laughing when you climb out of the car.
“Might be because I’m your only sister.” She hums smugly. “So let’s go do this decorating so we can get our munches on.”
"We're getting popcorn, too," you bargain, matching the long strides of her legs as you hustle down the street together. "So when we dip out of the party early tonight we can turn on horror movies and make popcorn."
“Carmel popcorn?” She counters, waggling her brows.
"Okay we're getting two kinds of popcorn."
The laughter that follows the two of you lasts all the way into town hall where party decorating is well underway and several people are already walking around with pieces of their costumes on. Your parents are both already there, helping some members of the town's council to hang streamers and a group of kids from the local high school are making signs for their charity fundraiser. It's a homey, welcoming atmosphere and you breath in the scent of pumpkin spice potpourri when you come further into the big function room.

“Come on man.” Benny hustles Will through the baggage claim, neither one of them packing anything that needed to be checked, but you have to go through that area to get to the rental desk. “We need to get our car.”
The hour drive from the airport in Laramie, Wyoming doesn't bother them. Red Feather Lakes was always a beautiful place inside of beautiful mountains, and being able to surprise their mother would be worth it. Ever since their father died any chance they get to see her is doubly worthwhile. It was more the nuisance of paperwork that both Miller brothers disliked. They'd rather just step out of the airport and be at their childhood home again.
“You’re driving.” Will tosses Benny the keys and smirks when the younger man groans. “Fine.” He huffs, pouting slightly. He had obviously wanted to work on something for his scare plan tonight.
"Driver picks music." Benny declares, regardless of the fact that it goes completely against their usual bargain. If Will is going to make him drive, he's not going to listen to Queens of the Stone Age for the entire drive.
“Whatever man. Just don’t fucking put on Miley Cyrus.” Will opens the backseat door and tosses his bag in. “You call mom, make sure she is home?”
"I texted her to ask what time she was going into town to hand out candy to the trick or treaters at her shop. It's still early enough, she'll be home." The florist shop that Dana Miller had managed for their entire life was squarely in the middle of the town's before-dark trick or treating event where little kids could go storefront to storefront to get candy from business owners, and she had never missed a year with the kids. These days she would finish that up and then head over to town hall for the party right after.
“Okay.” Will nods as Benny hops behind the wheel and cranks the car up. “We drop our bags and see if mom has some candy for later?” He has a wicked sweet tooth, although he never admits it
"Yes, we'll see if she has your mini Snickers, you overgrown child," Benny teases as he peels out into the road.
“You know you eat about half of them.” Will huffs, always annoyed when he goes to get some of his favorite candy and the little shit has eaten all of them.
"She got my Reese's." The younger brother of the two brothers announces happily. "I'm all set. The kids may not get any candy, but we will."
“Of course she does.” There’s no spite in his tone even thought it’s always been obvious that Benny is the favorite. It’s only because he’s the baby of the family.
"Don't pout." Benny throws his brother a smirk. "I bet if you go next door you can get all the treats you want."
Will groans, but he doesn't say anything. Since he's agreed to come, his brother has just intensified the comments about you and it does him no good to try to argue against him. He will just keep on so he's trying to ignore it.
The drive is reasonably marked with snark and ribbing, and when Benny pulls the rental car up in front of their old house it feels a little bit like coming home from bootcamp. That was the last time they had really surprised their mother with an arrival. "C'mon." Benny shoves Will and climbs out of the SUV. "Quiet. Get your shit."
"Jesus.' Will rolls his eyes but silently creeps out of the vehicle. "I think mom will notice me at some point." He points out. "It's not like the time you tried to have Aaron Rodgers live with us without telling our parents."
"His parents' divorce was vicious, he needed someplace to go." Benny defends, though he does make Will shut up before he very carefully opens the door in his best effort to be silent. He even avoids the creaky fourth plank in the entryway floor that sounds like a cartoon coffin swinging open. But the dog spoils it almost immediately with barking his head off.
Will's shoulders shake in silent amusement as Benny makes more noise than the dog trying to shut him up. Only getting the barking to stop when Scruffy comes into view, sees it's his second and third favorite humans and immediately rushes over to beat his tail against the walls as he jumps up for love and kisses.
"You ruined it!" Benny is huffing at the Malinois, but he's still bent over giving him all the cuddles he could possibly want when their mother appears around the corner.
Dana Miller is wearing her Halloween apron with an episode of Supernatural playing on the kitchen television, flour in her hair and even on her cheek when she unceremoniously drops the towel from her hands at the sight of her boys. "Benjamin Miller is this why you wanted to know about my schedule for the day?" She crows, before hurrying forward to wrap both of her sons up in hugs. "Almost gave me and the dog a damn heart attack, come and hug your mother."
"Hey ma." Will smiles as he scoops her up, even though her own grip on him is bone crushing. She's not a frail woman, despite being petite. "Ben thought we should surprise you, so send him the medical bills."
"I will, don't you worry." She squeezes them both tight, one after the other, and doesn't mind the fact that she's a little teary eyed at the sight of them. "What's the occasion then, besides Halloween? Or are we just giving your old mother palpitations for fun these days?"
"You know Benny." Will snorts. "It's all fun and games for him." His tone sounds surly but now that he's here, he's happy Benny dragged him along. It's been too long since he's seen his mother. He needs to make more of an effort.
“It is.” She knows that. Her younger son’s whimsy is something she loves about him. “But it got you both home, so I’m very happy about it. How long are you staying?”
"Just the weekend." Will shrugs apologetically. "I have to be back at work Monday afternoon."
"How is the firehouse?" Dana ushers her boys toward the kitchen after they drop their bags at the foot of the stairs like they always did after school every day. Old habits die hard.
"It's.....fine." The truth is, he's not exactly happy there anymore. There's been a change of command and for some reason, he clashes with the new fire chief.
"Oh?" Their mother raises an eyebrow as she moves to the stove, immediately dishing up some of what she was cooking. It was going to last just her all weekend, but now that her boys are home it will be one lunch and that is perfectly fine. "What's caused the change of heart?"
"New chief." Will sighs. "He's a very 'my way or the highway' type."
"You never do well with that." The beef stew from the pot is ladled into bowls without hesitation or even consultation. The Miller boys are always hungry. "Benny honey, get the tray of rolls out of the oven," she instructs, setting the full bowls one by one on the kitchen counter. "Are you thinking of asking for a transfer?" She asks, bringing her attention back to her elder son.
"Problem is, there isn't anywhere to transfer to." He complains, having been really pissed about that when he had found out. "Not without a significant loss of pay or having to move to BFE Florida."
"BFE?" Their mother asked, not sure she really wanted to know.
"Military term." Benny supplies helpfully, shooting Will a grin. "Butt Fuck, Egypt. Means the middle of nowhere."
"Charming." Dana rolls her eyes at her sons. "Put those rolls on a plate, Ben. Will, there's sodas in the fridge if you want." She ushers both boys toward the table on the other end of the kitchen and puts the bowls on a tray. "So what will you do, Will? Have you decided? Or found your solution but pretended you haven't decided yet?"
"Honestly, I don't have a clue right now." He had stopped giving the talks at the different commands, finding it too difficult after losing Tom last year. "But I need to figure it out. He doesn't even respect my VA appointments."
"Maybe you'll find a little inspiration. A Halloween miracle?" She winks and laughs at her own little joke. "A little mountain air might help clear your head, at least."
He groans at her lame joke and shakes his head. "Sure, why not?" He snorts. "It's closer than a Christmas miracle."
"So you're coming to the party tonight, then." It isn't a question. She will be bringing her boys to the costume party since they're in town. "We'll have to get some costumes sorted out."
"We have them." Benny announces with a grin.
"You brought some?" She raises an eyebrow in interest as they start to eat.
Benny cuts his eyes over to Will, still ignoring him. "I brought some." He admits. "Planned it out for my helpless older brother."
******
"I love that we're grown ass women and still getting banished to the backyard to make potions on Dad's old camping stove." You snort, carrying the equipment out to the back porch where your sister is lining up all of her bottles of 'love potion' ingredients. "Feels very teenage of us. I love it."
"Mom said she didn't like the smell of the herbs." It was such a lie, but neither of you called her on it. It's more likely that she just didn't want to put up with your giggling and cackling as you 'brewed' the potion.
"She should just be glad that we didn't do this last night after an entire pitcher of margaritas." That would have been even more giggling and probably a disaster waiting to happen. "Alright, do we have a spell or something? What are we doing here?" Since moving past the silliness of it, you've come around to just embracing the absurdity of the idea. If like isn't about being ridiculous with your best friend, then what is it about?
“Well of course we have a spell.” She rolls her eyes and snorts like you are ridiculous for even thinking otherwise.
"Pull out that grimoire, baby sis." The table on the porch becomes your staging area and you set up the camping stove and pot then start to look through the bottles that your sister has brought out. "Fennel pollen? What the hell is fennel pollen?"
“Fennel, ground.” She snorts, pulling out a small container of the spice. “Substitutes are okay.”
"Why is there a piece of...is that from my prom dress?" A scrap of lace fabric is out with the bottles and you hold it up in confusion. "Are we like...burning things related to wedding dresses to summon a groom?" You ask, already bursting out laughing all over again.
“It’s a part of the spell!” She snorts, even as she starts laughing too. “It was the dance you and Will danced at, remember?”
“I remember.” How could you forget? Your whole friend group had opted not to have official prom dates but to all go together, and then everyone had paired off anyway. The memory of it — how Will had grumbled about why didn’t we all have dates, then? as the two of you sat at the table together, and how it took him half the night to dance at all — makes you smile softly.
“So this is the pinch of closeness the spell requires.” She tells you as she takes the bottle from you. “From the waist of the dress where Will held you close.”
“This is a really fucking specific spell,” you joke, actually feeling more warmth from the nostalgia than anything else. You had ended up having a wonderful prom with Will and that was the whole reason that your dress was still upstairs.
“It’s specialized to the couple so it’s more likely to work.” She points out practically. “Too bad I don’t have something of Will’s.”
“I mean…” Glancing next door, you shrug your shoulders and move to the end of the porch that bitts right up against the border of your properties. There’s no fence or gate or wall or anything, just two backyards running together. “Does something from his yard count?”
“I don’t know.” She shrugs and shoots you a grin. “It couldn’t hurt.”
"Let's go see!" Ready to just throw yourself all in when the memories of prom make you all warm and fuzzy with nostalgia, you hop down from your back porch and slip over to the Miller's yard. It takes all of three seconds to find something that Scruffy left outside. Helpfully, it's one of Will's old bandanas that the sleek Malinois sometimes wears with his collar, and you pick it up with an air of victory. "Scruffy's doing his part for the spell," you call out, and hustle back to the porch.
Laughing, your sister shakes her head but takes the bandana. “Ode de dog slobber.” She jokes, although the bandana looks clean.
“Alright.” Back up on the porch, you motion to your sister with a flourish. “Break out the grimoire and let’s do this,” you proclaim, running your hands together.
"That's the spirit!" She reaches out and slaps your butt playfully and then turns to pull an old notebook out of the bag she had brought down. It might not be the spookiest but it was what she had as a teenager.
One by one each ingredient goes into the pot. A pinch of this, a dash of that. Mostly kitchen herbs, or the contents of a broken up tea bags. The live flame from the camping stove is there to singe the scrap of your prom dress. Will's bandana goes into the brew like a Hail Mary from his days as quarterback of the high school football team. By the time everything is in and your sister has read the makeshift spell aloud from her notebook with flare, you're both cackling with glee and feeling like there may really be something magical about Halloween after all.
“I feel like we should be wearing all black and living in a very mysterious house.” Your sister admits with a grin as she gives the ‘tea’ a final stir and pinches in the thyme that you had to buy earlier. “Okay, we let this steep one minute and then you drink it while saying Will’s full name after every sip.”
"You didn't tell me I had to drink it!" It's so like her to leave that detail to the very end, and you scowl at her for a whole three seconds. "I would not have put the dog's bandana in there."
She cackles with a slightly evil grin on her face. “How did you think it would work?” She demands, pulling it off the heat to let it steep as she pulls out your favorite old teacup. It was one that you had found in the attic years ago and rescued from the trunk to become your teacup.
"I guess I didn't give it much thought," you admit with a huff. Because you never intended to go through with it, but the prospect of having fun with your sister had won out.
She snorts and shrugs. “Maybe we add a little honey for taste.”
"Maybe more than a little." But the suggestion brings you both to the edges of giggles again, and you shake your head as she goes inside to retrieve the honey bear from the cupboard.
There's an odd moment of warmth in the quiet that follows, and you pick up the photo of you and Will from that prom night, savoring the nostalgia that blankets you like a gentle hug.
If you had known you were being watched through the window by an unexpected audience, you're not sure you would even have cared. Sometimes good memories are worth a moment to honor them.

“We don’t have to be there right when the doors open.” Will rolls his eyes as Benny hurries him along. Because of the military he has always been early for everything, but he’d spent too much time today by the window and then looking through an old box in his closet to even think about getting ready until his younger brother had burst into his room.
"If we want a crack at the punchbowl before Deputy Warren starts nitpicking at anyone who drinks, yes we do need to be there when the doors open." Benny contends. Pointing to the bundle of clothes on Will's bed, he frowns animatedly. "Get dressed, dude."
“You are gonna have a bottle out in the truck anyway.” Will points out, but he still gets up and pulls his shirt off. “What the hell did you get me for a costume anyway?”
"They had a costume for that Sons of Anarchy character you like when I went to the Halloween store." Benny tells him. He's already in his cowboy outfit and twirls his hat around one hand. "I figured if I got you a Disney outfit you'd refuse to go, and that defeats the purpose of coming out here."
“You know better than to get me some stuffy Prince Charming costume.” He snorts. He’ll be happy with the Sons outfit and he can slick back his hair, “I’ll be ready in five.”
"Good." Benny whirls around and stuffs his hat on his head. "You're driving!" He hollers back as he strolls out of the room. "I wanna pregame!"
“Shit.” He shakes his head and blows out a sigh. He has a feeling tonight is going to be a long one.
"I heard that!" Benny calls back, already heading down the stairs. He's going to enjoy the hell out of this weekend and is going to push Will's buttons until he figures out what it takes for his brother to enjoy it, too.
True to his word, Will is downstairs four and a half minutes later. His hair slicked back with some ten-year-old gel he had found under the sink in the bathroom and a silver chain that he had forgotten he had around his neck. He doesn’t have but two rings on, but one of them is a skull ring.
"You boys go ahead and have fun." Their mother is bustling around the living room, tidying up from the board game they had been playing before. "I'm going to come a little later. I want to catch the neighborhood trick or treaters before I leave the house."
“Are you sure?” Will walks over to her and drops a kiss on her head.
"Absolutely." She nods, giving her older son a squeezing hug. "The Olsens down the street always do a family costume and their granddaughter is just two years old now. I don't want to miss that."
“Okay.” Will palms the keys and looks over at his brother. “Ready, jackass?”
"I've been ready." Even the cowboy boots he borrowed from Fish are ready, and Benny slides right out the front door with a mock square dancing move, calling back: "See ya at the party, Mom!" And climbing directly into the rental car.
“Kill me now.” Will sighs as he shakes his head, following him out the door and closing it behind him. There’s already kids running up and down the streets with bags in their hands. Soon ghosts and goblins will haunt the streets and the witching hours for youngsters will begin.

"Oh wow..." Your sister gasps sharply walking into the town's Halloween party and seeing how much decorating had been done after the two of you left. The finesse, it seemed, was everything. A band composed of several town council members, the middle school principal, and the town librarian has set up on one end of the room to play the night away. Tables of food and drink line the opposite wall for new arrivals to mingle and find their courage, and some couples are already out on the dance floor at the beginning of the party.
Having doubled down on the idea to dress as Barbie movie characters this year, your sister rolls in as Cowgirl Barbie in her bright pink jumpsuit complete with bell bottoms and the kerchief around her neck with a grin on her face. She's always effortless, your baby sister, and instead of being huffy when she spots someone else in the same costume as her, she just sprints off to make a new friend instead. It leaves you standing in your pink and white gingham dress as classic Barbie just a little awkwardly by the door.
“Come on.” As soon as he finds a spot to park, Benny is rushing Will out of the SUV and towards the door. Eager to start the night off, even though he had been drinking on the way.
The party is in full swing already but the punch bowl is full, which is all Benny cares about at the moment. He heads straight over to get a black plastic cup and scrawl his name on it with a metallic sharpie when he hears his name screeched at top volume. Old friends seem to pour out of the woodwork to say hi, and practically before Will even hits the doorframe, his little brother is surrounded by a mob of people.
Will is more the type to ease into a room. The military training and life had led him to scout out exits and breach points. He finds himself searching those out and spots a pink gingham dress in the process.
"Oh shit!" Your sister has spotted him first, as she's facing the rest of the room while you were pouring two cups of punch.
"What?" You barely look up, making very sure that you don't spill on your dress. "Did you spot more Barbies?"
“No.” She shakes her head and grins. “Will’s here!” She hisses and motions you away from the table. “Go give him a drink.”
"Will's here?" There is hardly enough time to react before she is spinning you around and nudging you toward the middle of the room like she's going to shove you clear across the expansive dancefloor and straight into his arms.
When you turn around, Will swallows. The dress looks incredible on you and you look shocked to see him. He shuffles slightly, rolling his shoulders back as for once wishes he had a cigarette even though he quit eight years ago.
"Hey." One single, stupid word comes out of your mouth when you get within an arm's reach of him, still clutching both cups and trying to pretend your heart isn't beating out of your chest.
“Hey.” He reaches out to take the cups from you and stupidly takes both like you weren’t wanting one for yourself. “You don’t look like the Barbie dolls I remember Benny pulling the heads off of.” He jokes, flashing you a quick grin. “I think they were all yours too.”
With your cheeks instantly on fire, you manage to smile and shrug like you aren't well aware that Benny had a penchant for doll destruction when you were all kids. "Barbie is a state of mind," you tell him with an air of someone giving sage advice.
“That’s true.” He chuckles, glad that you hadn’t taken offense to that comment. He had almost stuck his foot in his mouth. “Besides, you make a better Barbie.”
It actually draws a nervous little giggle out of you, and you have to clear your throat to keep from looking or sound like a besotted middle schooler when you are a grown-ass woman. "It's good to see you, Will."
“Good to see you too.” He nods, handing you back one of the cups. “Here, I’m an idiot.” He snorts. “Don’t know why I took both of them.”
"You were trying to be helpful," you predict, seeing the impulse as one of chivalry, even if it wasn't necessary. "I, um...I didn't know you'd be home this weekend. What's the occasion?" It's your turn to be a little bit of an idiot, considering you're both standing in the middle of a party.
“Benny dragged me home.” He rolls his eyes, even though he’s happy that he has. You’re here. “It’s been one thousand sixty five days since I’ve seen you.” He blurts out suddenly, having calculated it earlier.
The way that tugs at the corners of your mouth makes your lips twitch up in a smile and all of a sudden you can't look him in the eyes momentarily. "You counted?"
“Always count.” It’s a habit that hadn’t been that noticeable in high school to careless teenagers, but that trait had been exacerbated in the Army. “Pretty much everything.”
"I know." A lot of people didn't realize, but you noticed. You always noticed. "But I didn't know you counted that." It was a little less than three years ago when you saw him last. After everything had gone to hell with his now ex-fiancée and he had left Colorado to move out east with Benny. Without a doubt, he counted because of the heartbreak, not because of you.
He shrugs and takes a sip of the punch. “You really helped me screw my head back on straight.” He reminds you. “Should have called you more when we moved.” It’s a half assed apology and he knows it. “Sorry about that.”
"It's fine. Not like we promised it or anything." You hadn't. It really was okay that he hadn't called. Your crush isn't his responsibility, after all.
“No, but I should have.” He repeats. “How have you been? Mom said you moved home?”
"Yeah." It isn't anything to be ashamed of and you won't pretend it is, even if the plan was for the move to only be temporary. "I work remotely and there was nothing keeping me where I was, so I came back for a while. It gives me time to save and really think about where I want to go next." The smile you offer him is small but bright. "How's Florida?"
“Hot.” Will snorts. “Muggy.” He shrugs. “Ben’s happy there, and our friend Fish settled down there too, but I don’t know.” This restless feeling has been getting worse since Tom died. He has a lot of guilt being around Molly and the girls. Even they were planning on moving soon. Wanting to be closer to the colleges they were choosing.
"You're not happy there?" It extinguishes your smile almost instantly, worried that he's made a decision that has made him unhappy and knowing that you were one of the people who encouraged him to stay close to his brother in the first place. Benny is his best friend, after all.
“I think I want a change.” He admits out loud. “Nothing horrible, but just…restless, I guess. Fish and his wife had another baby. Makes number three and I haven’t been on a date in two years.”
Before you can stop yourself, you're huffing at the idea that he somehow would have any trouble finding women willing to date him. "I'm sure you can flip the switch on that any time you decide to," you assure him, immediately taking a sip of your punch so you don't stick your foot in your mouth.
He shrugs again. “Maybe. But I don’t want to have to explain all my issues.” He shoots you a grin. “And all my scars.”
"You're never going to let me off the hook for that, are you?" Like you're seventeen all over again, you could just stick your tongue out and tell him to deal with it. "I warned you to use a pot holder, William. The fact that you thought you could take the cupcake pan out of the oven without protection is not my fault."
He chuckles, always loving the way your nose scrunches when you look at him like that. It’s why he always teases you about the scar on his palm. It’s barely noticeable now and he has more prominent ones, but he likes to bring it up at least once every time he sees you. “You told me the oven was off.”
"Yeah, the oven being off doesn't mean the pan instantly stops being hot!" It's so ridiculous to get into every single time, but he does love to bring it up. It was mother's day and he had wanted to do something nice for his mom, but now it's the thing to tease each other about.
“How was I supposed to know that?” He demands, even as he starts to laugh. It’s stupid now, looking back on it, but it had been one of those brainless teenage moments. “You didn’t even kiss it to make it feel better.”
“I—I didn’t—” The insinuation makes you fluster, skin burning hot all over again. “You didn’t ask me to,” you justify. If he had asked, you would have done it in a heartbeat.
“I thought that was like, an automatic thing.” The way your lips pinch together is adorable and he sends you a smirk. “Kiss it to make it feel better.”
“I mean…” You’re going to burst into flames any second, you can tell. Just burn to ashes on the spot. “I mean I guess, but—” You sputter inelegantly. “Weren’t you dating Annie Neville when that happened?”
He would have dumped Annie in a heartbeat if you had given him any indication you wanted him. It might not be something that would have been right, but it was the gods honest truth. He takes another sip of his drink. “Broke up with her two days later.” He doesn’t admit that he had broken up with her because she thought it was weird he would do something for his mom on Mother’s Day, but that’s not the point.
“Right.” Nodding slightly, the warm allure of deeply alcoholic punch sounds like a great idea and you sip. “I remember now. She bitched and moaned about losing out on boyfriend bragging rights.”
He rolls his eyes. “That’s the dumbest thing I ever heard.” He cuts his eyes towards his brother. “And I grew up with that one.”
You follow his eyes and grin, seeing the gaggle of friends surrounding Benny. Including one hot pink Barbie jumpsuit. “Surprising no one, my sister has found your brother,” you hum in amusement. “I wonder what havoc they’ll wreak this time.”
“They might burn the town down.” He huffs. “Then Benny would expect me to put it out.”
“That’s right.” An innocent like sound escapes you. An assent. As though you didn’t order a copy of his fire department’s Hunky Heroes calendar last year under a different name just because his photo was your birthday month. “Firefighter. That seemed like it would be right up your alley.”
“Might be an ex-firefighter.” It’s always been easy to share with you. Which was why his ex’s comments about being closed off were so confusing to him. He shares. He just never shared much with her because she never seemed to give a shit.
“Really?” That surprises you, since giving back to his community has always been so important to Will. “You’re thinking of leaving?”
“Yeah.” He notices that you have finished your own punch, so he takes the cup from you and guides you back towards the bowl. “Just not sure where to go.”
“I’m not sure I’m the person to ask,” you admit, trying not to get all girlish and swoony at the gentle press of his hand on your back. “I just ran home to my parents when I felt lost.”
“Nothing wrong with that.” He insists, his fingers twitching against your back. “Home is where you feel safest. It’s normal to want that when you are hurt. Emotionally or physically.”
“But it’s not where I want to stay.” Somehow talking to Will has always been easy. Even when you were in that place where you clammed up around him sometimes because your teenage hormones went out of control, you comfort and safety of him was enough to bring you back down. As it turns out, that’s true no matter how long you’ve been apart. “So we’re sort of in the same weird place.”
“Where would you go?” Will asks, comforted by the fact that you seem to be in the same boat. He’s always presented himself as very in charge and forward thinking, so finding himself floundering without a real plan was new.
“I have no idea.” It’s not a thing that you’re comfortable admitting, but somehow knowing that Will is feeling the same is a comfort. He always seemed so steady. “I just know that I’m not in the place I thought I would be by this age and I’m restless.”
He chuckles and nods in agreement. “Benny keeps telling me that I’m ready for another duty station.” Being in the military required moving every three to four years.
“You’re not thinking about going back in, are you?” Between his chronic pain and his PTSD — both from military service — your expression turns to one of deep concern and worry at the idea.
“No.” He quickly shakes his head. “That ship has sailed.” Even if he could pass the fitness requirements, he’s too old to go back to being a Captain. His peers are all too far ahead. “Just feeling that need for a new adventure.”
“I fully understand that.” The itch is something you have always shared, back when you used to dream about leaving the mountains and seeing everything the world had to offer. Will had succeeded in that front. At least far more effectively than you ever had. “Maybe…” When he hands you a fresh cup of punch you pause and thank him. “Maybe our paths will cross again? Who knows.”
“You can work anywhere.” He reminds you with a grin. “You should pick a place and go.”
“I would.” You shrug half-heartedly. “But I never got the taste for traveling alone.”
“Where would you want to go?” He asks curiously, wondering where you would go, what you would want to see. If those dreams had changed since you were a child.
“The ocean? The forests? Desert or huge cities?” Feeling ridiculous, you laugh at yourself and just shrug. “There’s so much of the world out there and I’ve barely ever left home.”
“Tropics.” Will decides. “Salt and sand. Beautiful breezes and sun kissing your skin.” His idea might be influenced by his own location in Florida.
“Sounds perfect.” And if the idea of being there with him is in your head, you’ll swear it’s only because you’re talking to him about it right here and now. “But again…I hate being alone. So it’s sort of a moot point.”
“I don’t understand how you aren’t married.” That has mystified him for years. Always expecting to hear the news that you were engaged every time he called his mom. It had surprised him when he had ended up engaged and you still had not found a steady boyfriend, although you had both ended up in the same single status after a few years.
“I guess…the right guy just never came along.” You’d sooner die than admit that every guy you’ve ever been with has been accidentally compared to the man standing in front of you. “It happens.”
“Prince Charming?” He hates that he could never be that guy for anyone, but it wasn’t him.
“Prince Charming is overrated.” Sipping your punch, something about the whole thing just makes your heart clench and it feels like the world is taunting you even more than it was when you saw him walk in the door. “All I ever wanted was a partner I could be proud of. That seems to be too tall of an order.”
“It shouldn’t be.” Will admits softly. “I know plenty of men who would jump at the chance to be with someone who just wanted to have a loyal, loving partner.”
“I guess I just haven’t met the same guys as you.” It hurts your heart, clutches it and squeezes tight, that you never could bring yourself to admit that you liked him. Not out loud. Not to anyone but your sister. Wondering what could have been has poisoned your chances at finding someone else to the degree that you were doing a phony love spell ritual in your backyard less than three hours ago. He is literally everything you ever wanted and he’s standing right in front of you — but you can’t say the words. “Just like…” you swallow hard, shoving down the ache in your chest. “I know plenty of girls who just want someone honest and caring.”
“I’m honest.” At least he is in his personal life. Work is a different story, but he has regrets about that. “I care.” He shrugs, his leather wearing biker look making him look a little more dangerous than normal, but never as dangerous as he actually is. “Point me to the girl.” It’s an invitation, wanting to see what you would say.
“Will…” It feels like he’s just shoving the red hot poker of years’ worth of yearning deeper into your chest and you shake your head. “I’m just saying. It shouldn’t be so hard for you to find someone to make you happy. You’re a sweet guy and you always have been.”
He stares at you for a long moment, something curling in his chest, and he realizes that you will never admit it. “Had someone in mind when I asked.” He admits.
“Then you should probably talk to her about it, not me.” Ugly disappointment rises in your throat like bile and you shift in place uncomfortably. Of course he has someone in mind. He’s incredible and he deserves that happiness.
He decides to be a little more blunt than normal since you are obviously not getting the hint. “I am.” He tells you, lifting a brow at you in amusement.
"You—" No. No. You heard him wrong. You had to have heard him wrong. There is no way in the world There is no way because if that's true then how much time did you throw away by keeping your mouth shut? "No. That's—" Your head spins and you put down your cup, deciding that there is absolutely no need for alcohol when your head is spinning like this already. "What?"
“Circles and light and all that’s might.” Will murmurs, starting to grin. “Give me what I wish for tonight.”
"Oh....oh no..." The clench of panic that grabs hold of your chest when he starts reciting the damn 'spell' that your sister had written down in her notebook -- the ridiculous words you had been in giggle fits over in your backyard a couple of hours ago -- makes you take a step back from him as embarrassment settles into every bone in your body. "Did you--" Oh you're going to absolutely massacre your sister. "That's the most awful prank anybody could ever play on a person. Is my sister put you up to this I'm going to kill her."
“What?” Will frowns at you, confused as to why you look completely mortified. He had thought it was cute. “No.” He shakes his head. “Put me up to what?” He murmurs your name and steps closer to you. “She didn’t put me up to anything.”
"So it's...a coincidence?" You swallow hard, trying to wrap your head around absolutely any of this situation. "That my sister talked me into doing a stupid love spell on the same weekend you come home?" If you could curl up into a ball and hide forever, you would do it instantly. It still hasn't hit you that he's said out loud -- in a reasonably straightforward way -- that he's interested in you. "And that you heard me?"
“Benny insisted I come home this weekend.” Will defends, even though he had started to realize what the trick was this year and if it backfired on Ben - he was going to murder him. “I— I was in the backyard. I heard you and your sister giggling like when we were kids, so I pulled the board in the fence.” There’s a section of fence that you can remove a board easily and see into the other yard. He had never admitted it, but it was how he had often watched you while you were reading until he realized how creepy it was.
"What board in the fence?" There is a privacy fence that runs between your houses but for some reason it never really divided your yards, and you can't say that you ever thought about it very much before. Or now, clearly, since you're astonished to find out that it ever had a loose board.
“The one near the tree.” He licks his lips and has the decency to blush slightly. “It’s come loose since eight grade.”
The way your heels dig into the floor beneath you, it's like you're trying to dig a hole to the center of the earth to fall into feet first. "How...um...how much did you hear? Or see?"
“I just want to see you.” He admits, setting the cup down to shove in his pockets. “I heard the giggles and the ‘spell’. It was cute, reminding me of when you went through that phase in high school.”
"We...got drunk on margaritas last night and she managed to make it sound like a silly, harmless thing..." Mortified doesn't even begin to describe the way you're feeling. Your whole face is on fire with it. "I'm so embarrassed I could evaporate...I don't even know what else to say."
“It’s cute.” He insists, smiling softly at you as he shuffles closer. “I didn’t do some kind of love spell, but I was glad I heard yours.”
"You--?" Swallowing the lump of fear in your throat, you manage to not back up a step when Will comes closer. "You...were glad?"
“I am.” He agrees, his smile widening slightly as he reaches out and takes ahold of your waist and steps closer to you. “Because now I know that the crush I’ve had on you for most of my life hasn’t been moot.”
"You...what?" You gasp out, eyes shooting up to meet his when you finally realize what he's said.
“Guilty.” He hums, his smile managing to curve wider and he nods. “You’ve been that girl that I always wanted and never thought I could have.”
Something inside you swells, actually absorbing the words with the soft way he's looking at you. "All you ever had to do was say the word."
“You too.” He points out, lifting his brows in amusement. “Years ago.”
"Well how was I supposed to know?" You defend, finding that that feeling in your chest is bubbling and transforming into laughter and disbelief.
“You ask.” Will chuckles, leaning in and brushing his nose against yours. “You don’t rely on Love potion number nine.”
"You could have asked too." The warmth of him washes over you like the most gorgeous invitation in the world, taking your breath away and inviting you closer all at once.
“I guess I could have.” He admits. “Now I know.”
"So..." One of his hands is on your hip and he's bent down to keep your faces close, so all you have to do to hear each other is murmur. "What are we going to do with this new information?"
“I think we are going to have to leave this party.” He pretends to care about that, but there’s much more interesting things to do.
“Just like that?” Wherever he wants to go, whatever he wants to do, it doesn’t matter. Even the chance to be close to him in any way is worth it.
“You want to stay?” He asks seriously. If you want to stay, he will. Just for you.
“I…want to dance with you,” you admit, even though it feels silly. “Just once. After that we can go anywhere you want.”
“We can dance.” He agrees, chuckling slightly and nodding. “Let’s wait for the next song to start.” This one is a little more peppy than he would want for a dance.
“So Benny dragged you out here, huh?” He has his arm around your waist now and something in the back of your head tells you to just keep talking so you don’t start to worry it’s a dream. “Did he, um…did he…ya know…know?”
“Honestly? I don’t know.” If he did, once things were official, he would probably crow and take all the credit for it. “Probably. I know he knew that I always had a thing for you.”
Sighing slightly, you shake off a laugh and bask again in the warmth of having him beside you. “I think our siblings may have meddled.”
“I don’t doubt it.” He rolls his eyes. “Can’t be mad at them, though.” He huffs. “Not when we would have been really bad about doing this ourselves.”
“Clearly.” You huff quietly. “We have been really bad about it.”
“Obviously.” Will snorts right as the song transitions into a slow song. “Ready to dance?”
“It feels like prom all over again.” When he holds his hand out to you, you settle your palm to his and try not to let out a shaky breath at how alarmingly right it feels.
“Do you know how badly I wanted to kiss you that night?” He asks as he guides you out to the floor and spins you around to fit into his arms like you’ve always belonged.
“How badly?” Giddy glee and joyful awe are starting to supplant the confusion and disbelief in your heart, and you melt into him when he takes your hand in his on the dance floor.
“Remember how you kept asking if your lipstick was messed up?” Will reminds you, the hormones and embarrassment of youth had seemed impossible to overcome, but now you are grown. If it doesn’t work out, hopefully you could remain friends, but he doesn’t foresee it being an issue. You know him inside and out. “I was trying to decide if you would slap me if I stole a kiss.”
“It…wouldn’t have been stealing.” Your cheeks burn all over again at the memory. At how pathetically transparent you had been — but apparently not transparent enough. “That was my very bad attempt at hinting that I wanted you to kiss me.”
“No, I got it.” He promises, his blue eyes flashing possessively. “But I’m man enough to admit I don’t want to kiss you with an audience.” He murmurs with a smirk. “Think we can wait that long?”
“It’s been like fifteen years,” you point out, smothering a laugh at how ridiculous that actually sounds out loud. And how badly you’ve wanted a moment just like this one for so much longer than that. “I think a few more minutes won’t kill us.”
“It might.” He teases. “You look even more beautiful than you did on prom night.”
“Are you…” A smirk broadens your smile exponentially. “Are you flirting with me, William Miller?”
“Flirted with you a lot over the years.” He snorts. “But yes I am.”
“I guess it’s just the first time I’ve noticed.” You laugh work. Self-consciously. “Or wasn’t convinced it was just wishful thinking.”
“So tell me the truth.” Will grins. “Did you really drink that concoction you and your sister brewed? It smelled worse than. Benny’s gym bag.”
“Of course I drank it.” One hand would clutch your plastic pearl necklace but you would have to stop holding his hand and that’s simply not going to happen tonight. Instead, you pout to pretend to be offended. “It’s called committing to the bit.”
“Dedication.” He laughs, shaking his head and pulling you closer. “Then I think you should be happy to know that it worked.”
“Oh yeah?” The grin on your face turns beaming all over again, but you can’t help teasing him. “That little love spell planted a whole lifetime of yearning in you?”
“Nah.” He admits that easier than he had expected. “Just made it easier to talk about all this.”
“It did.” As much as you hate to admit it, your younger siblings’ meddling may have paid off. And you are convinced they meddled together. “It did, and I’m not upset about that at all.”
“You shouldn’t be upset about anything, beautiful.” Will murmurs softly, rocking you to the beat and smiling into your eyes.
Shrugging slightly, you're actually able to sink into his gaze for the very first time and end up feeling that ache in your chest twist in an entirely new way. "I'm a little upset we wasted so much time," you admit. "But better late than never."
“Yes it is.” Will pulls you off the dance floor as the song ends and starts to head towards the doors.
If you could think about anything beside the feeling of his arm around you, you might have remembered to fire off a text to your sister that you are taking off from the party early. But then, if you could think about anything else you might have noticed your sister standing on the other side of the room with Benny, giggling like conspiratorial idiots.
But it doesn't matter at all. It doesn't matter, because when you and Will make it out into the chilly night air, his arm tightens around you and you slip yours around his waist. Twined together like you were always meant to be.
He had driven. So he has the keys to the SUV. Guiding you over to it, he frames your body between the door and himself, pressing closer.
Your pulse ticks up immediately, heart rate skyrocketing, but you don't hesitate. Not when the thing – the person – you've wanted since you were old enough to want anyone at all. You reach up, hands set on Will's shoulders, and use that leverage to pull yourself up just a tiny bit more. This time it's your nose that nudges against his, but you don't pull away.
“So pretty.” Will murmurs, leaning against you more, feeling your body against the length of his as he tilts his head and fuses his lips to yours. Years of wanting pouring into the kiss.
Your hold tightens on him, hands sliding around his neck and into his long hair as his own wrap around your waist to drag you flush against him. There is no hesitation for either of you, diving deep into the kiss and sharing a mutual, needy moan at the fast-beating desire in that first kiss. You've both kept it locked up for far too long to pretend anymore. Now that the flood gates are open it seems to be all or nothing.
For Will, sinking into your embrace feels like coming home. The instant acceptance and love that swells make him desperate for more as he starts to lick into your mouth deeper.
For the hungry way you start to devour each other, you may as well be the teenagers you were when this mutual infatuation first started. If anyone were out in the parking lot to witness it, you're sure you would have gotten cat called or interrupted with a loud clearing of someone's throat to be shooed away to a more private location. As it is? The relative privacy of the parking lot means that you forget yourself and are tugging on the strands of Will's hair as his hands start to map the curves and contours of your body.
Will groans into your mouth, his arms banded around you and holding you close before trailing over your dress. He’s not shy about touching you, cupping your ass and his hardening cock twitches against your stomach. The whimper that he pulls out of you is unapologetic, knees shaking even as you tug on his hair sharply to pull a groan out of him as well. This is much more than a kiss would have been fifteen years ago. Still just as needy, but deeper, more sure. Will knows what he is capable of.
It takes a long time before either of you are willing to part, and when that time comes you're panting desperately while you try to maintain any sort of composure. "I, um—" But your thought breaks off when you realize you just can't string more than two words together yet. All you can think is more.
He grins, feeling as disoriented as you look, but he's been trained to handle overwhelming situations. "We should leave." He murmurs before leaning in and stealing another kiss. "Before we get arrested for public indecency."
"At the risk of sounding very teenage." You can't help but giggle at that, feeling like you're bubbling over in every way. "My parents are home. So maybe your place?"
He chuckles and lifts a brow, considering all of his options. "We could do that. Or we could go get a hotel room."
"Beaver Meadows?" Raising your own eyebrow to meet his, you offer the first hotel you can think of. The resort ranch for mountain tourists is on the other side of town but it's better than driving an hour out to Fort Collins.
He tilts his head slightly, shrugging one shoulder. "That's up to you. Don't know how you feel about being in my old bedroom and possibly hearing Benny catcall outside the door." His younger, dumber brother absolutely would.
"I care less about Benny and more about having to look your mother in the eyes tomorrow morning," you admit, laughing at even the idea of it. "I don't think she needs to hear me riding you."
Will's eyes flutter slightly and he growls softly. "Hotel it is." He decides, nodding to himself. "Do you want to swing by the house and get something? Or we can both do the walk of shame tomorrow."
"Nuh-uh." You shake your head animatedly, reaching up to place a much softer kiss on his lips. "I'm not ashamed of you. I don't care how many people see us in the same clothes or figure out what it means."
He hums and his hand slides up your back as he steps back, pulling you with him to open the passenger door. "Then let's go."
"We do have to make one stop." When you climb into the SUV together, you buckle your seatbelt and sigh happily as his fingers tangle with yours. He raises his eyebrow again but you shrug. "Condoms. I haven't been on a date in years so I stopped worrying about birth control."
"Fuck." Will hisses under his breath, cock twitching at that new piece of information. He can't say that he's not disappointed to not be able to feel you bare, but your comfort is more important than his ideal night. "Condoms, roger."
"I know." You squeeze his hand, sharing the feeling that you would rather be as close as possible. "But I doubt we want to risk it without."
He huffs out a small laugh, tapping the steering wheel after the engine is brought to life and he puts it in drive. "Don't bet on it." He jokes.
Turning your head immediately, you stare at him for a second before letting out a shaky laugh. "Not the first time," you bargain, feeling warm and flush and...deeply giddy at the way things are unfolding around you.
He flashes you a grin, feeling just as light hearted. "Yes ma'am." He promises, squeezing your hand and then looking back at the road as he pulls out.
******
It's a quick drive, mostly because Red Feather Lakes is such a small town. There's a Halloween party going on at the resort that you and Will look like you're immensely prepared for, but you just check into the last available room and happily accept the pair of leys handed to you by the young desk agent.
Will might have paid for the room, but he lets you lead the way to the room. Wanting to watch your ass as you walk, and to allow you time to change your mind if you wanted. Just because you both have wanted to be with each other since you were teenagers doesn't necessarily mean you are ready to jump into bed with him and he would respect that.
"Here we go." The room at the end of the fourth-floor hallway clicks open with a tap of your keycard, and you nudge open the door to reveal the ranch-themed room waiting for you. The rug looks like cowhide and the bedhead has horns, but you're barely looking at it. Instead you turn around, much more inclined to take in the sight of Will Miller as you reach for his hand to drag him inside with you.
You are enthusiastic, making him chuckle as he closes the door behind him. “Nice room.” He hums, not looking around, but staring at you. “But this view is better.”
Completely addicted now that you’ve had a taste of him, you toss your purse onto the nearest table without a second thought and go straight into his arms. “I’m certain mine is even better.”
He doubts that, but the eagerness in your eyes makes him groan as he pulls you against him again. “You are so damn beautiful.”
“Please tell me you put the Do Not Disturb sign on the door?” Once you have him to yourself you’re not going to want to stop, so you’re damn well going to ask the question now.
He smirks and winks at you. “Of course I did.”
Your face splits into a grin. “You’re perfect.”
Will reaches up and caresses your cheek. “Shit.” His eyes widen. “We didn’t get the condoms.”
“Shit.” That grin slackens, and you realize along with a drop in your gut that you’d gotten so distracted by having Will’s hand inch up your thigh and under the skirt of your dress while he drove that you’d totally forgotten to stop.
“It’s okay.” He takes a deep breath, cursing himself for being too distracted by you. “You stay here. Get comfortable.” He points at himself. “I will be back in five minutes.”
"Thank you." Safety means the world to both of you, and you're not about to turn what could possibly be the best night of your life into the reason he resents you five years down the line when it results in a little kid and a marriage he would have felt forced to commit to. No way. If you and Will are going to be together you're going to make that decision together, not because of an accident.
“Five minutes.” He promises before he is out the door. He will make it in three and a half flat, but he adds extra time as a precaution.
As soon as the door closes behind him, you look around the room in a more flustered state of nervous excitement than you've ever been in your entire life. It takes about thirty seconds before you can think coherently enough to pick up the hotel phone and order a room service tray to be sent up -- ordering food that can safely sit until you're hungry and a bottle of wine to share because it feels more romantic that way. After that, you grab your phone from your purse and finally send that text to your sister.
Sissy: Don't wait up for me tonight. I left the party early.
Incoming text: You left with Will!!! Omgggggg it worked! You owe me that speech at your weddddddding!
Sissy: You and Benny are still on my shitlist. But yes. I left with Will. Happy Halloween, kid.
Instead of waiting for a reply, you put your phone on silent and tuck it back in your purse, sitting down amongst the pillows on the bed just seconds before the door opens again.
He’s out of breath and probably looked like a fucking idiot, but he doesn’t care. He’s got an entire box of condoms and he’s back before the time frame. “Got ‘em.”
"Four minutes." You grin, pointing at the clock on the wall. "I was just about to get undressed for you to have a fun surprise when you got back, but you're too efficient."
“Oh, don’t let me stop you.” Will throws the lock on the door and shoots you a dirty grin. “I like shows.”
"I did not think anyone was going to see what I have on under this dress," you warn him, but you shrug your shoulders and reach for the zipper of your costume. If he has a problem with the dumb saying on your little bootie shorts, you don't really care. They're cute and fun and that's what counts.
"I don't care what you have on under the dress." Will promises you. "It'll be on the floor soon enough." He strips off the biker vest and starts to kick off the boots he had worn with the outfit. They are his regular boots but they are laced up loose, so they slide off easily.
It's too unbelievable that you're actually undressing with Will with the purpose of climbing into bed together, that it almost seems like the tiny black booty short with the bright yellow Slippery When Wet logo on the ass that are revealed when your dress hits the floor, are simply there for comic relief. Like you need to break the tension of the situation and remember that you're just people.
You turn around to show him the lettering on your ass and he starts to chuckle. "Oh baby girl, I truly hope so." He pulls his shirt over his head, the last scar he collected on that botched job with the guys is healed, but it's still pink skinned so it looks alarming against the rest of his body. "I want to feel how wet you get."
"For you?" You grin, turning around to face him again. "It'll be record breaking, I promise." With just your bra and tiny shorts on, you start to climb onto the bed but pause when you catch sight of a new wound amongst all the well-healed scars. It doesn't matter what it is, or how he got it. You bend down, placing a soft kiss on the pink skin that stands out against his tan, and then settle your knees on either side of his hips. There are more clothes to shed, but the battle wounds that mark his skin are a stark reminder of how close you came to never having this moment together at all.
Will grabs your hands, holding them for a moment while he stares at you. The softness of your touch was soothing, and he lifts your hands to his lips. "You've always been there for me." He murmurs. "Now I want to see what we can be together."
"Truth is?" You squeeze his hands gently before letting go and letting your hands drop to his belt, toying with the buckle before he nods his consent and you start to work the strap loose. "I've always been yours. So whatever we're going to be? I'm all in."
"Me too." He can quickly agree with that. "I'll just – I should have asked you out when I came home from boot camp."
“It’s alright. We got here eventually.” His belt pulls loose from his jeans and you fuse your mouth to his, letting the kiss burn you and swallow you and take you wherever you’re going to go tonight. Room service will be left outside your door and you’ll refuel for round two when you’re ready.
Will touches you, mapping your body with his hands and memorizing every curve and dip with pleasure. Finally touching you like he has imagined over the years.
It’s far more certain than it would have been then. Wandering hands have purpose and searching kisses pressed against bared skin find their mark every time. Those damn condoms are probably the only thing that keep the first time from lasting more than five minutes — both of you are so touch starved that finally getting the touch you’ve been wanting feels exponentially more wonderful.
Will pants, collapsing against you before rolling onto his side and bringing you with him. One leg dragged over his hips to keep you close and your chest pressed against his as he catches his breath. “Fuck.” He chuckles, unable to stop touching you even though he’s exhausted from how overwhelming his orgasm was. “I think I died and this is heaven.”
“Noooo,” you giggle against his chest, damp with sweat, and leave a kiss over his heart. “If you died we can’t do that anymore and that can’t be the only time we do that.”
His eyes are closed and he smiles. "You mean we aren't both dead?" He jokes.
“No, babe.” You laugh, still trying to catch your breath. “You’re thinking of le petit morte.”
“Same thing right?” He grins, rubbing his hand up and down your slightly sweaty back. “We should have done this prom night.”
“Can you imagine?” The thought settles over you like a dreamy blanket. “We would have been inseparable.”
“We’d have four kids by now.” Will predicts. “I’d probably be a Major.”
“You think?” It sounds positively dreamy, you have to admit. Except for one detail. “I don’t think you would have stayed in. You’d have retired like you did anyway. But I like the sound of a big family.”
“Probably not.” He will disagree with you on that. “The stability for that many kids.” He points out. “I wouldn’t have chased contracts.”
“Well…” Knowing that he’s safer now and that he’s searching for a new adventure anyway, you offer him a smile. “Who knows what would have happened if we’d done this back then. But we get to decide what happens next.”
“Yeah.” He closes his eyes and pulls you closer. “We will have to talk about that.”
“Hold that thought.” Pressing another kiss to his skin, you crawl out from under his arm and wrap yourself up in a robe to slip out to the hall and grab the room service tray. You bring it back inside along with the bottle of wine and shoot him a grin. “I planned ahead,” you tell him, setting down the charcuterie tray on the room’s coffee table.
"You are perfect." Will groans, tucking his arm under his head and watching you with zero shame. He still can't believe you are here, even after taking off the condom to dispose of in the little trash can by the bed. "Are you hungry now, or do you want to wait?"
“Maybe we can eat and drink and talk?” It seems like a very civilized way to do it, even if you’re going to be doing some very uncivilized leering at the same time. Will looks even better with his clothes off than you ever dreamed.
"Bring it over here." He smirks as he pats the bed beside him. The bare spot noticeable now that you slipped out of it. "We can eat in bed just this one time, I think."
“Special permission for a special occasion.” You agree with a nod. The tray is beautifully set up but the cheese is set aside in a container on ice as you requested and the kitchen has sent up some chocolate dipped strawberries as well. “I guess they got our vibe when we checked in.” It wouldn’t have been too hard to do, of course, but it makes you smile as you slip back under the covers beside him.
"Wonder if they think it's an affair or elopement." Will takes the bottle from you, sitting up and quickly peeling off the foil to uncap the cork.
“Maybe.” The two wine glasses that came with everything are basic and a little on the small side, which is probably good for balancing everything in bed or on nightstands. “How very mysterious of us.”
"Very mysterious." Will agrees as he pours out the wine and sets the bottle onto the nightstand so it doesn't get knocked over. "I think their theories will only get more absurd the more noise we make." He teases, tapping his glass to yours.
“In that case I’ll be louder,” you tease, leaning over to steal a kiss before your first sip of wine.
He snorts and takes a sip of his wine. "I wonder if those shit heads set us up for this entire thing." He ponders. "The spell, being here and Benny reminding me that you had moved home. Knowing I would go into the backyard."
“Oh, I guarantee it.” Although you studiously avoid mentioning that your sister is already predicting a wedding. That is far too much pressure. “They’re going to gloat forever.”
"Jesus." He rolls his eyes and sighs. "Yeah they are. Unless we can get them together."
“Do we really want to do that, though?” It sounds amusing, but the logistics would be a nightmare. “They’d gloat and try to be cuter than us.”
"It would be mildly amusing." He chuckles. "But you're right. The headache wouldn't be worth it."
“But…” Glancing up at him, you take another sip of wine and reach for the tray to keep your hands busy. “We should probably talk. About…whatever this is.”
“We should.” Will agrees. His face pulls into something serious, wanting to take this conversation cautiously, not make demands or put too much pressure on you. “Do you want to go first?”
“I’m not sure I know where to start,” you admit, although it’s mostly out of fear that you’ll ask too much and scare him off.
“Do you see yourself staying here?” He asks. “Would you want me to move? Try long distance?”
“I never intended to stay here. It was supposed to be temporary and I’ve been here for years.” The offer to have him move is unexpected, but more than anything you know that the third alternative won’t be satisfying or comfortable for you. “I don’t think long distance would be ideal, but I know that moving in together right away is way too much to ask for.” The two of you slowly start to snack on your tray and you consider him beside you. So incredibly handsome, loyal, and always a pillar of strength. “But…if you wanted me to come out to Florida, I would.”
“Ben and I bought a house.” He explains. “It was cheaper than renting and it’s one that needed some work.” He shrugs slightly. “If you wanted to come to Florida, you have a place to stay until you decide if you could stand me long term or not.” He huffs out a laugh to keep it lighthearted.
“I’m not worried about that.” Slipping your free hand into his, you lace your fingers together and give it a gentle, encouraging squeeze. “It’s…sort of a relationship test drive. Dive into the deep end and see how we do. When we’re ready to say it’s working, I can officially make the move.” In your heart you know it will. It’s all you’ve wanted for so long that you’re willing to fight tooth and nail to have it. To have him.
“That would be good.” He agrees with you about being cautious, even though he believes it will work out. “Especially since you are mobile.”
“My office is wherever I am.” You nod and press a kiss to his hand before letting go again. “And where I want to be is with you.”
“So why don’t you come visit me this next week?” He offers. “You can see where we live. See if you like it.”
“I feel like I should pinch myself.” When you smile at him, it is bright and warm, tinged with disbelief. “Teenage me is getting everything she ever wanted.”
“That’s a good thing, baby.” He reminds you. “You should have everything you want.”
"So should you." As far as you're concerned? Having him completes that list of wants in a way you never expected. You had given up on the dream of Will Miller years ago, only to find your world turned upside down and the man of your teenage dreams in bed beside you.
“Right now, I can’t think of anything else I want than what I have right here.” He murmurs softly.
"Oh yeah?" You face splits into a grin all over again. "Well, I'm very glad we agree."
“So now that we have a plan, what else?” He picks up a cube of cheese and pops it into his mouth. “Do you want to go on birth control? Do you want to use condoms? Do you want to start working on kids?”
"Those are three very different options." The casual way he tosses out kids as an option makes your ears burn like they're on fire and your heart skip two beats. "Offering me space in your house and talking about kids while we eat snacks in bed after the first time we have sex?" You giggle softly, brimming with disbelief at how right it all feels. Still, you have to tease him. "Might as well whip out a ring or plan an elopement, Miller."
“Jewelry stores are closed.” Will hums and smirks at you as he takes off the skull ring he still has on his finger. “But this could work.”
That light, ribbing tone evaporates from your voice and your eyes widen, flicking between his face and the ring. "Are you...do you really mean it?" Instead of being high and laughing, your voice cracks in shock, but only because you've hit another level of shock and awe in what was already a perfect night.
He has only been partly joking, but the second your eyes go wide, he realizes that he’s serious. He’s known you all his life, he’s loved you for most of it. If Tom’s death taught him anything, it’s that he never knows when his ticket might be punched. Why shouldn’t he be serious? “We could get you a real ring later on.” He rationalizes. “But a skull ring is appropriate for Halloween.”
"How about this?" The way you just want to leap forward and say yes and dive in headfirst is the sex and the wine and the fantasies talking. Will deserves all of that, but also the measure of love that is support and care. He deserves someone who is going to take care of him. And if you're going to be that person, you want to do it right. "I'm going to wear this skull until we decide that we're ready for me to move to Florida once and for all. When that happens, we can go ring shopping and start talking about kids. How does that sound?" You really don't think it will take long. Not with the way tonight has gone. "If that's in two weeks or two months or two years, it doesn't matter. We decide together."
“That sounds perfect.” He flashes you a perfect set of white teeth with a gigantic smile. “Happy Halloween, baby.” He murmurs before he presses his lips to yours, thinking that Benny’s Halloween prank might have actually been a good one this year.

Hey Fanguins! Want to Help Real Life Penguins? :D
Tumblr media
Why Now?
5 out of the 18 penguin species are listed as endangered
That’s approximately 28% that are endangered, not including those under the “vulnerable” or “near threatened” statuses.
These endangered species include:
The Yellow-eyed Penguin
Northern Rockhopper Penguin
Galapagos Penguin
Erect-Crested Penguin
African Penguin
Tumblr media
Cute little guys like these African penguins are predicted to go EXTINCT by 2035.
Biggest Threats to Penguins:
Overfishing
Plastic Pollution
Oil Spills
Habitat Disruption
Invasive Species
Climate Change
So… What can We Do?
I know sometimes it seems hopeless when there are major corporations having extensive negative impacts on the environment.
But there are small, everyday changes you may be able to make to contribute for the better (at least a little).
Small actions can add up over time.
Shop Consciously
Overfishing and unregulated fishing are big contributors to penguin populations decreasing.
Less available prey means penguins have to spend longer time at sea to feed their chicks and themselves. This could force them to abandon their chicks, reach the point of exhaustion and pass away as a result, or return to emaciated chicks.
Seafood Watch is a wonderful resource to ensure the seafood you’re buying has been caught sustainably. https://www.seafoodwatch.org/recommendations/download-consumer-guides
Tumblr media
Swap for More Sustainable Options
Aside from seafood, you might be able to make many swaps to reusable products.
Reusable grocery bags/tote bags can actually make transporting groceries easier while reducing plastic usage.
If you have access to clean water, a water filter pitcher or a reusable water bottle are also great options when available! 😊
Swapping plastic containers for aluminum cans or cartons (these are easier to recycle)
Swap balloons for other party favors (many released balloons end up in our oceans). Penguins and other sea animals can choke on or get tangled in these while swimming.
Conscious Pet Ownership
Choose pets responsibly and never abandon a pet if you can no longer take care of it. This could lead to the rise of invasive species.
Keep pets on a leash when outside even when you do not see local wildlife.
Penguins, especially those whose habits are around human populations, are regularly attacked and lethally injured by unattended dogs or cats. These include feral or stray animals that have become invasive.

Learn More Directly from Non-Profits:
SANCCOB is an internationally renowned rehabilitation center for South African seabirds (including African penguins) leading conservation efforts for this species. https://sanccob.co.za/about-sanccob/
The Yellow-Eyed Penguin Trust is another great non-profit located in New Zealand that tracks behavior and nesting patterns of the Yellow-eyed penguins. They also remove invasive predators to ensure Yellow-eyed penguins have a chance at repopulating to sustainable levels. https://www.yellow-eyedpenguin.org.nz/yellow-eyed-penguin-trust/about-the-trust/
Penguins International is a nonprofit that educates about penguins and penguin conservation efforts. https://www.penguinsinternational.org/about-us/
Any AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums that support conservation efforts
Tumblr media
Advocate:
Sign petitions encouraging legislation change that aims to reduce climate change or regulate fishing
Write to/email legislators when penguin species are at risk
Donate (if you can/would like):
Both Penguins International and SANCCOB do symbolic penguin adoptions to support penguin conservation.
On SANCCOB’s website, you can choose an egg, hatchling, rehabilitated penguin, or long-term penguin resident to symbolically adopt/sponsor. You even get to give your adopted penguin a name!
The Yellow-Eyed Penguin Trust also accepts donations of various amounts.
I figured since if you follow this blog, penguins have inspired media and art that means a lot to you or that has at least brightened your day. If you’re as amazed as I am about the real life species, please consider taking steps to help or learn more about real penguins. I figured sharing this information, while trying to make these changes myself, are the least I could do to honor these amazing creatures!
Thank you for reading! 😁
(Lol I’ll get off my soapbox now 😉)
youtube
Maybe Tom McGrath can explain it better 😉 (skip to 3:16 to hear him talk about how amazing penguins are! 😊)
