every time i go back to working a normal food service job after coming from my student worker collective job (when i dropped out and now bc i graduated) i feel so crazy. as young people managing a restaurant together outside of a more typical hierarchical business model its easy to frame it as like 'wow lol we're just blundering our way through things and barely managing to look presentable' but like in actuality every time it turns out that hierarchically managed corporate food service jobs are doing a worse job at pretty much every procedure because no matter how many resources they have on the whole, if it doesnt significantly cut into their profits they just don't care

i ain't gotta tell him (i think he knows)
Tumblr media
pairing: spencer reid x reader
wordcount: 1.4k
summary: sometimes, you take things a little too literally. this can be both a blessing and a curse. in terms of your first meeting with spencer reid, you're not sure what to call it.
notes: based on the prompt "give me Spencer Reid telling reader, who is very literal about most things, its safer to kiss on the lips than to shake hands while introducing themselves at the Bureau for his first day and Spencer gets so surprised when he does kiss him." the reader is not gendered specifically in the actual piece, though (no pronouns or gendered anatomical language), so read as you please! this is also my first reader-insert so if you could give me some feedback, i'd appreciate it greatly :)

“And here’s your desk,” Agent Hotchner finishes, stopping at an unoccupied seat, the only unoccupied seat, within a quad. Two of the three taken spaces are void of their people at the moment, but at the seat across from yours, you can just see the top of a head, bent over in concentration, peeking out from over the divider between the two workspaces.
“Got it,” you nod, setting down your armload of things. “Thank you, sir.”
Hotchner dips his chin in acknowledgement, and although he doesn’t smile, his voice isn’t unkind when he tells you, “You’re welcome. I’m happy to have you here with us, and I think I speak for my whole team when I say that we’re looking forward to seeing what you bring to the table.”
“Speaking of the rest of the team,” you start hesitantly before he turns to leave. He pauses, raising an eyebrow as he waits for you to finish. “Will I get a chance to meet them before our first case? I’m hoping to at least introduce myself before we see any dead bodies, no matter how interesting a first meeting that would make.” You wince and watch Agent Hotchner’s face carefully. The joke had just slipped out—you tend to run your mouth when you’re nervous, but the unit chief doesn’t seem to be the kind of person to appreciate your impulsive wit.
To your relief, you aren’t kicked out of the building. You allow yourself a brief, silent exhale of the breath you’d been holding—you had not wanted a repeat of The Incident of 2006. Instead, your boss looks at you for a moment, considering, before his gaze flicks away to something behind you. “I’m sure you’ll see them around soon enough. In the meantime, why don’t you and Agent Reid get acquainted?”
Ah. So not something—someone. Agent Hotchner had been referring to the owner of the head you had seen a few moments earlier. The person in question doesn’t seem to have noticed that his boss is looking at him expectantly. He’s still bent down over something that you can’t see, deep in his own world.
The unit chief clears his throat. “Reid?” he says again pointedly. Finally, the other man manages to tear himself away from his work, gaze leaving the papers he’s been writing on a split second after his head.
“Yeah?” he answers absentmindedly, eyes finally making their way up to see who’d been calling him. He’s young, mid-twenties at most, and lean, not built like many of the men you’ve worked with in the past. Curly chestnut hair sweeps across his forehead, a couple of the unruly strands sticking out at the nape of his neck. You resolutely ignore the urge to finger-comb the fluffy-looking locks. That would be absolutely inappropriate and more than unprofessional.
His eyes, the color of earl gray tea that’s been steeped until it’s just on the darker side, are warm when they lock on yours. He looks down hurriedly, hands twisting in his lap seemingly unconsciously. “Oh, hello. I assume you’re the new recruit? I’m Reid. Doctor Reid.” He’s speaking fast, clearly stumbling a little bit. “Um. Well, you don’t have to call me doctor. Agent Reid is fine. Or—or just Reid! Spencer Reid. Yeah, that’s me.” He looks up at you again for a second, an anxious twist to his mouth, and you feel simultaneously endeared and empathetic. You’ve been in his position all too many times before, tripping over your own words in front of a new acquaintance. In fact, you’d done that just this morning when you’d come face-to-face with Agent Hotchner, nearly dropping your box of things as you stammered out a greeting. In your defense, the man was intimidating. That was probably why he made such a good FBI agent.
Anyway, that’s beside the point. You smile at him, trying to put him at ease as you introduce yourself, giving Agent (Doctor?) Reid your name and holding out a hand over the divider. He’s stood up as well over the course of your short conversation so that the two of you are about a foot and a half apart, and you notice that he has a couple inches on you. It isn’t surprising—he looks the long and lanky type.
However, Dr. Spencer Reid decidedly does not take your proffered hand, instead looking down at it, held in between the two of you, like you’ve just offered him a whole stick of butter. Not disgusted, per se, but hesitant and doubtful, like he’s figuring out how to politely reject the metaphorical dairy product. You lick your lips, a nervous tic. You’ve never been great at meeting new people, and this doesn’t seem to be heading in the right direction. With your luck, you’ve just made a grievous error in the Unspoken Code of Social Interaction and now your new colleague will never want to speak to you again.
Agent Reid clears his throat uncomfortably, bringing you out of your despairing rumination. Your hand is still hovering uncertainly in the space between the two of you. “Actually, did you know that the number of pathogens passed through a mere handshake is astonishing?” Evidently, he’s a hand-talker—his long-fingered hands have been brought up together, gesturing vaguely as he speaks to you.
“Um,” you put in, but he plows on.
“It’s technically safer to kiss someone,” he finishes, glancing at you again to see your reaction.
Oh. You furrow your eyebrows. Well, it’s not a conventional greeting, but to each their own. Hopefully this will make up for whatever faux pas you’ve committed. Shrugging internally, you step forward and press your mouth to Dr. Reid’s, eyes falling half-lidded.
His lips are slightly chapped and taste faintly of coffee. You keep your tongue firmly to yourself—after all, this is just a greeting—but after half a second you realize that his mouth is hanging open, not to receive the kiss, but agape with shock.
What?
Wait a minute. A terrible realization dawns on you and you stumble backward, breaking the very much one-sided kiss. Agent Reid—Spencer—is staring at you, doe eyes wide and face abloom with a fiery blush.
You lick your lips again, but this time, you can taste the fading memory of your colleague’s mouth. Your voice is faint when you manage to speak again, low and husky with embarrassment. “Um. It just occurred to me that I may have taken that a little too literally.”
A wolf whistle breaks the stunned silence that ensues, and you whip your head around, feeling your face heat up.
“First day here and you’re already pulling moves on our resident genius. Who would’ve guessed?” A group of three other people have just arrived in the bullpen: a muscular Black man, a blonde woman, and a woman dressed sharply in a dark-blue blazer. Fuck, you think, but the man, the one who’d spoken, is grinning gleefully as his eyes dart between you and your new…acquaintance. The two women behind him wear expressions of shock, amusement and disbelief warring on their faces.
The dark-haired one raises an eyebrow. “Is that what the young people are doing these days? And here I was thinking I was still hip and cool.”
“It’s—it’s not—,” you stammer, not daring to look at Spencer.
“Welcome aboard, agent,” the man says, striding across the room. He looks you up and down, assessing you, before sticking out a hand. “I’d prefer a handshake, if that’s alright with you. My name’s Derek Morgan.”
Trying to regain your composure, you take his hand and let him shake it once, twice, in a firm grip. Unable to resist, you shoot a glance back at Reid. The other man is still standing stock-still where you’d left him, but he’s touching his lips with the fingertips of his right hand like he’s trying to ground himself. There’s no disgust or anger in his face; on the contrary, there’s a look of dizzy surprise, and somehow, he seems almost…pleased. Uncertainly so, but unless you’re mistaken, there’s a glimmer of delight in those big brown eyes.
It’s not real, you tell yourself, trying to focus on introducing yourself to Agents Morgan, Prentiss, and Jareau. You’re imagining things. That was completely unacceptable and you must apologize as soon as possible.
But you can’t suppress the warmth bubbling up within your ribcage when you think back to Dr. Reid’s face when you’d stepped away, flushed and dazed, the way his head had cocked ever so slightly like a confused puppy.
Maybe you hadn’t made a complete mess of your first meeting with Spencer Reid after all.

For a kingdom that worshiped the sun, Dawn was strangely beautiful in the moonlight.
Standing on the balcony overlooking the city, with music and chatter spilling out from the ballroom behind him, Scott could almost pretend this was a perfectly normal social event, like all the other events each empire took turns hosting. But lately it was harder and harder to pretend anything was normal. There was nothing jovial about the atmosphere inside. Gem and Fwhip stood off in a corner, faces serious as they whispered together. Shelby and Katherine stood on opposite ends of the room, glancing over when they thought the other wasn't looking, with downturned lips and forlorn expressions. No one had seen False in months. No one seemed concerned about it.
Scott saw movement along the shoreline, and leaned over the railing a little further to get a better look. His breath caught in his throat - was that sculk? Darkness crept over the pier, a tendril snaking its way across the boards. He needed to find Pix -
A hand clapped down on his shoulder, and Scott resisted the urge to yell even as he flinched away from the touch. "Whoa, easy there," said Sausage, sounding amused. "What's got you so on edge?"
Scott wanted to move away, but the hand on his shoulder kept him in place with a firm grip. "Hi Sausage," he said warily, and tried to tell himself the unusual glow he saw was simply the lights behind them. "You just...startled me, that's all." He looked back at the shoreline, but saw nothing but starlight reflected in the waves. Everything was normal.
"Sorry about that." Sausage didn't sound sorry at all. "Why don't you come back and dance some more?"
Scott let Sausage lead him back into the ballroom, fixing a polite smile on his face even as his skin crawled when Sausage put one hand on his waist and gripped the other hand firmly. "Weren't you dancing with the sheriff earlier?" he asked as they swayed together across the dance floor. Seeing Sausage sweep Jimmy into his arms and spin him around was one of the reasons he'd stepped outside in the first place. Sausage had once reassured him that he and Jimmy were only friends, but lately he seemed to take delight in making it obvious just how close their friendship was.
Sausage laughed. "I sure was! But he's mad at me, so it didn't last very long." He dipped Scott low without warning, his hold loose, and for a split second Scott felt like he was about hit the floor. Sausage's eyes glittered when Scott's grip on his arm tightened in fear, but he pulled him back upright, and Scott breathed a sigh of relief.
"Why is he mad at you?" asked Scott.
Sausage spun him around before pulling him close again. "We played a little joke on him the other day, and he didn't take it well." He smirked, and Scott frowned. Sausage was always the first to apologize when a joke accidentally went too far, always rueful when he overstepped a boundary and eager to make up for it. But now, he sounded like making Jimmy upset only amused him more.
Scott wanted to shake him, demand to know why he was acting so strange lately, but he settled for a disapproving look. "Did you apologize?" He was sure he knew the answer, but felt the need to ask anyway. "If he's upset, you should - "
Sausage snickered. "Whatever for? We were just joking, and he overreacted. It was Gem who did it anyway. I was just there." He looked at something over Scott's shoulder and grinned. "Oh, there he is! He's perfectly fine. Check for yourself if you're so worried."
He spun Scott around as he let go, a little harder than necessary, and just as Scott thought he might lose his balance he found himself wrapped securely in Jimmy's arms and swept smoothly into the next steps of the dance.
"Are you all right?" asked Jimmy, shooting a glare in Sausage's direction. He looked out of place in the ballroom. Everyone else was dressed in elegant finery, whether it was their usual look or not, but Jimmy looked like he'd walked straight out of the fields and put no more effort into his appearance than a quick washing up. A simple farmboy in a room full of royalty and divinity. Scott thought he looked incredible.
"I'm fine," said Scott. "He's just a little high-energy for me tonight, that's all." It wasn't entirely a lie. The steps Jimmy led him through were part of the same dance, but slower and steadier, and it gave Scott's pounding heart a chance to calm down. But, Scott realized as he noted the tension in the arm beneath his hand, there was a difference between 'steady' and 'relaxed.' A muscle tensed in Jimmy's jaw as he clenched his teeth. Scott wanted to run his fingers over Jimmy's stubble and massage away the stress.
"He's an ass," said Jimmy, and spun him around. "Everyone is lately."
"Everyone? Even me?" Scott's lips quirked up, intending his comment to be lighthearted and teasing, but his smile faded when Jimmy didn't return it. "I'm sorry. You've been having a hard time. I shouldn't tease."
"It never stopped you before." Something painful flickered through the closed-off look in the sheriff's eyes. "You've been right there with them all, laughing at me too. Why be sorry now?"
He dipped Scott down low, his hold secure. Scott's hand rested softly on Jimmy's arm, and he knew if he let go entirely he still wouldn't fall. Even angry and hurt, Jimmy wasn't going to let him fall.
Trusting in the grip that held him, Scott moved his hand up to touch Jimmy's cheek. "I haven't been good to you," he said quietly. "You deserve more. I'm sorry."
Jimmy stared at him, a wary look on his face, like he was waiting for Scott to laugh at him and turn it all into another big joke. He swept him upright again and resumed their dance. "It's a little late for regret, I think."
"It's a lot late for regret," said Scott. "But I'm full of it all the same."
Jimmy sighed and shook his head. "You and me both." They drifted to a stop in front of the balcony as the music dwindled down, and remained still when the next song began. But Jimmy's fingers were still entwined with Scott's, and his other hand still rested on Scott's waist, like he was ready to join the dance again on a moment's notice.
Jimmy leaned a little closer. A gentle breeze blew in, and on the night air Scott could swear he smelled a distant note of honeysuckle. "You?" said Scott. "What do you have to regret?"
Jimmy laughed. "There's an old general store in Tumble Town," he said. "Do you know the one I mean?"
"I do." Scott looked at him curiously. "Why do you ask?"
Jimmy finally let go of his hand, but only to pull him close. "I feel a lot like that store," he said against Scott's ear. "Fun and exciting for some people, at first. But then the novelty wears off, and I'm just...ragged and dirty on the inside."
Scott wanted to cry. His own words were being used against him, and now he knew how Jimmy must have felt that night under the stars hearing those same words. Jimmy tightened his hold, and Scott closed his eyes and leaned into him. So many words burned on his tongue. You're wrong, you're wonderful. Did you say that on purpose, to see what I would say? Does it mean you remember us? It feels like you remember us. You're in pain; how do I make it stop? But they all tangled up with one another, jumbled up so much that none of them would come out. How do I make it stop?
Could he make it stop?
"There you are! Sausage said you might be out here." Fwhip's voice cut through his messy thoughts like a knife. The chill when Jimmy stepped away from him felt even sharper.
"Oh? Were you looking for me?" said Scott as Fwhip took his arm. "I'm sorry I didn't say hello sooner. You looked preoccupied."
"It wasn't anything super important," said Fwhip. "I've always got time for you." He looked Jimmy up and down. "Wow, you sure put a lot of effort in tonight," he said snarkily. "Gem must be thrilled to see how much you care."
Jimmy scowled at him. "Gem's lucky I even bothered to show up," he snapped. "Seeing as how she hasn't cared enough to apologize for almost killing me on the bridge with Sausage's sword."
"It was just a little cut. You're so dramatic," said Fwhip.
"Gem did what?" said Scott at the same time. "That doesn't sound like her."
"Oh, like you don't know?" snapped Jimmy. "Fwhip and Sausage thought it was hilarious. I'm sure they told you all about how I almost bled out and drowned."
"No, I didn't know!" said Scott desperately. "Fwhip, what on earth - "
"You know what, I've had enough of this," said Jimmy. "No one cares what I have to say anyway. I'm leaving." He shoved his way through the crowd and disappeared, leaving Scott staring after him and Fwhip rolling his eyes.
"Fwhip," said Scott slowly, "what did you do?"
Fwhip only grinned. "Come dance!" he said, and Scott allowed himself to be tugged back into the ballroom. "Told you, he's just dramatic. And mad about the new gunpowder farm Lizzie and I built."
Scott sighed, only half listening as he and Fwhip danced and Fwhip told him all about the new business agreements between Gobland and Animalia. He needed to go to Tumble Town tomorrow, he decided. It was time they sat down and had a very long and - as much as the thought frightened him - a very honest discussion.

Longstar AU — Chapter Six
“These two kits are ready to be apprenticed,” Bluestar began to the ceremony, gazing down at Bramblekit and Tawnykit. “Until they have earned their warrior names, they will be known as Bramblepaw and Tawnypaw. Bramblepaw will be mentored by Fireheart, and Tawnypaw by Brackenfur. Teach them all you know.”
The new mentors touched noses with their apprentices. Bluestar, once again, had nothing to say. No well wishes from StarClan, nothing. She hopped down, and slid into her den.
“Longtail!” Bramblepaw rushed up to him, his ears flattening. “Oh, sorry,” He gave a soft smile. “How’s Swiftpaw? I’m kinda sad he couldn’t see our apprentice ceremony..”
“He’s.. doing fine,” Longtail murmured. “He’s not awake yet, but Cinderpath said he’s gonna be okay.”
“Good,” Bramblepaw mewed. “C'mon, Tawnypaw, Fireheart and Brackenfur wanna show us the territory!” The two apprentices rushed off together.
“I remember when you were a wild apprentice like that,” Darkears flicked his tail across his back.
“.. I don’t think I was so bad,” Longtail mewed, resting his gaze on Darkears.
“I was your mentor,” His whiskers twitched slightly. “I would know.”
“.. I guess you would.” Longtail huffed, “What do you want, Darkears?”
“I’m going to meet with Blackfoot, of ShadowClan,” His meow dropped to a whisper. “I’m giving you a chance to come with me. To realize what mouse-dung this clan is, and come to ShadowClan.”
“.. Are you going to ShadowClan?”
“Yes,” His amber eyes narrowed. “There’s no point staying here. This clan is run by a mouse-brained leader, who barley ever talks to her clan, and made a kittypet her deputy. We are weak. In ShadowClan, things would be different. We'd be respected warriors again.”
“No matter how much they want to say that I’m working with Tigerstar, or you, for that matter,” Longtail narrowed his eyes, taking a short pace toward Darkears. “I’m going to remain loyal to this clan. I was born here, I grew up with the cats here, I’m loyal to them for the rest of my life. No matter what they say. I don’t care if I’m not a respected warrior, I will live and die by my clan. No matter what happens.”
“Than you're just as mouse-brained as the rest of them,”Darkears hissed. “Goodbye, Longtail. And if you ever change your mind, we’re waiting for you.”
With no other words said, Darkears padded away, his tail flicking behind him.
Longtail swiftly padded out of the camp, stopping in a bushel of trees. He stayed quiet, listening for any shuffling of prey. He picked up the gentle thumping of a rabbits feet, dropping into a hunting crouch.
He readied himself to pounce, but before he could spring forward, something grabbed the small creature. Longtail backed up, gazing at a large, black and orange dog. The dog was ten times his size, and had blood spattered around its muzzle.
I’m near Snakerocks, He thought for a moment, slowly and quietly backing out of the situation. The same place Brightpaw and Swiftpaw were when they got attacked..
   Dogs!
That’s what was stealing the prey! And more importantly, that’s what attacked Brightpaw and Swiftpaw.
I have to tell Fireheart, Longtail dipped into the taller grasses, waiting for the dog to disappear. Thankfully, it was too focused on the prey to smell him and seconds later disappeared. He turned tail, speeding back to their camp.
“Woah, woah! Where are you coming from?” Runningwind gave him a cheeky smile, “What’s the rush, Longtail?”
“I need to speak to Fireheart,” Longtail spat out.
“He’s in the medicine den with Bluestar and Cinderpath, as well as the apprentices,” Runningwind replied, Longtail's eyes narrowing. “I’m not sure why, exactly. I was just about to take out a border patrol.”
“Stay away from Snakerocks,” Longtail warned.
“.. Why? What’s at Snakerocks?” Runningwind pressed.
“.. That’s where Swiftpaw and Brightpaw were attacked, it just isn’t safe!” Longtail hissed hurriedly.
“.. Gotcha,” Runningwind mewed, rounding around the Tom with the rest of his patrol behind him.
Longtail padded into the camp, rounding around the fresh-kill pile and padding into the medicine den.
“.. Let StarClan see these two as Lostface and Deadleg, to show what StarClan allowed to happen to them.”
“What?” Cloudtail's voice hissed, “You can’t name them that! It’s cruel!”
“The names are truthful,” Bluestar hissed, “They show what StarClan let happen to then. How StarClan abandoned them too and let them almost die because of it.”
Bluestar turned out of the den, brushing past Longtail in silence. Longtail padded a few paces into the den.
“.. What happened?” Longtail questioned, glancing at Cloudtail.
The white tom rolled his eyes, “Bluestar gave them a warrior ceremony,” Longtail's eyes widened, “.. And named them Lostface and Deadleg.”
“What?“ He growled, “How.. how could she do that? They worked so hard to receive their names, and are still fighting hard to pull through.”
“I know,” Cloudtail curled around Lostface, “And despite their scars, they shouldn’t have such cruel names.”
“I agree,” Fireheart sighed. “I thought you'd gone out, Longtail. Why back so soon?”
“I needed to speak with you, it’s urgent,” He meowed.
“Is it okay that Cloudtail's here?” Fireheart asked, “We can go outside.”
“It’s fine,” He settled down, his tail curled round his paws. “I was hunting close to Snakerocks. As I was hunting, something pounced on the prey before I could. A dog. And a large one, at that.”
“.. You're sure?” Fireheart gazed up at him.
“Of course I’m sure! I saw it with my own eyes,” He mewed, flattening his ears. “You.. don’t think I’m lying, do you?”
“.. I just want to make sure, Longtail. That’s all.” Fireheart took in a deep breath, “Thank you for telling me.”
“.. Yeah.” Longtail murmured, slowly turning out of the medicine den. As he padded out, he could hear Fireheart speaking to Cinderpath and Cloudtail. He didn’t believe him.
Longtail trotted into the warriors den, settling in his nest. He didn’t want to eat, he didn’t want to speak with anyone, everything was just mouse-dung.
But, before he could fall asleep, paws pattered at the entrance to the den.
   “Longtail,” Fireheart mewed, “I’m sorry.”
“Hm?” He hummed, turning to face the deputy.
“I’ve been suspicious of you,” He sighed, “Thinking you were working with Tigerstar, with Darkears,” He glanced off as he said the name. “But I was wrong. You are a loyal ThunderClan warrior. You’ve just been looking out for our best interests, and I’ve been mouse-brained to not believe you. So, I’m sorry.”
“.. Thank you, Fireheart,” He gazed up at the tom. “I appreciate it.”
“So.. let’s.. start over,” Fireheart gave a smile. “Let’s trust each other, and work together as clanmates.”
“I'd like that,” Longtail gave a small smile back.

//~~//~~//
Kanji and Aone felt like the comfort of home, which they were. Living with them had always made you feel safe and loved. Those broad shoulders and firm arms holding you close and keeping you warm.
They knew how to make you feel okay to be yourself.
So, even though you knew you could trust them and they'd love you regardless, you felt nervous telling them you were a virgin. The anxious knot boiled in your tummy all throughout the day. Distracting you from work at the boba shop, and studying afterwards with your boyfriends.
"What's wrong, babe?" Kanji asked suddenly, making you jump when his large hand grasped your small one. "You don't look happy."
Aone hummed, sharing the saddened expression with his lover. You nodded quickly and waved a hand in your face.
"I'm fine, Kanji! I swear, don't worry you two."
They didn't believe you. Of course they didn't. The constant looks of worry that formed on your face gave away something was wrong. Aone and Kanji didn't like seeing you unhappy, a bad feeling forming in their guts whenever that sour expression reared its head.
So, once you all were home and had dinner, Aone and Kanji asked you to your shared room to talk.
Are they mad? Do they feel unloved? Oh no, if that's it we need an immediate cuddle session with ice cream, blankets, and stuffed animals!!
Thoughts raced through your mind as you walked up that flight of stairs and down the hallway. Opening the door to see both of them sitting comfortably on the king sized comforter, sharing a calm but worried look.
"What's wrong? Are you guys not feeling loved properly?" You asked, not even giving them a second to open their mouths.
"I'll bust out the extra blankets and get a movie running so fast if that's the case!"
"N-No, love. It's not that!" Kanji giggled, blushing a little and your antics. "We've just been wondering why you looked down today."
"Even during our date you looked sad." Aone interjected, pressing his legs together.
Glancing at each of them, you felt your tummy tighten at the feelings of guilt you carried. You've been worried about confessing your virginity and this is what you cause? Oh god, you felt like an ass for worrying about something so small and trifle.
"Oh, you're still on that..?" You looked at the ground, feeling the bundle of anxiety forming in the pit of your stomach.
"Yes. We're worried we might've done something wrong." Kanji responded, standing and walking over tentatively wrapping his arms around you.
"It's not you, I promise."
"Then what's wrong? Is it exams next month?" Aone asked, scooting to the side and patting the empty spot next to him.
You smiled softly and sat next to his large figure, feeling a large dip in the mattress as Kanji followed suit. They're eyes trained on your face and lips, waiting for your answer.
"Honestly, it's nothing really important at this point. I know that now." You mumbled, blushing as the rough hand of Aone came up to grasp yours.
"If it makes you worry this much, it's something we need to know, love." He said, calmly but with a little push, circling his thumb around on your hand.
Oh my God, you both are too sweet to me- You thought to yourself, looking between them and feeling your eyes burn.
"It's about, uhm.... intimate things.." You blushed, staring straight down at your thighs and feeling them clench together.
A small silence that soon filled the room once you muttered out those words, feeling a heat rise in your tummy, waiting for their next move.
"'Intimate things?' So, sex?" Kanji said, rather bluntly, making your heart flip.
Aone hummed with a nod, looking back down at your pouting figure as you stared at Kanji in embarrassment.
"Y-Yes, but, don't go saying it like that! It's embarrassing!!"
They shared a laugh, hearts melting over your cutely embarrassed figure. Soon, you crawled away from them as they continued laughing, stuffing your face into Kanji's large pillow and trying to calm your heated face.
"Stop laughing!!" Your muffled voice called out from the cushion.
"Okay okay, Kanji stop it." Aone muttered softly, controlling his laughter as his boyfriend continued his.
"I-I'm sorry, it's so cute~!" He cried out, laying on the soft bed.
You stayed in the pillow even after your face stopped it's frustrated blushing and the echoes of giggles stopped from at the end of the bed. Ignoring the shifting movements until there was obviously an extra weight above you pressing into the mat.
Slowly, you lifted your head and looked upwards, coming into contact with a pair of dark brown orbs looking down at you. Your face heated up once again, seeing the serious look on Kanji's face made your tummy do flips.
"What about sex do you feel anxious about?" He asked, resting back onto his knees, Aone leaning onto his elbow.
They looking like some damn snacks- Fuck, stay focused! You scowled, shaking your head before taking a breath and looking back up at him.
Your cheeks still a flushed pink color as you answered. "I'm worried about whether I'll be good when it happens."
"What do you mean, Y/n?" Kanji smiled, coaxing more information out of you against your will with those pretty ass eyes of his.
"I don't know if I'll do a good job since I'm a virgin." You finally answered, whining and lifting the discarded pillow to your face.
"You're a virgin?" Kanji mumbled, surprised.
He nodded, taking in the information and scooting closer, pulling you to his chest and rubbing your back. Soft kisses peppering your temple as Aone's own strong arms wrapped around you both. The warmth shared between their bodies made your own swell up with love.
"It's okay that you're inexperienced, Y/n." Kanji mumbled, continuing the peppering of kisses as he spoke.
"Nothing's wrong with that." Aone's soft voice chimed in, butterflies flying in your stomach.
Their warmth.. it's so nice.. You hummed, letting your cheek press against Kanji's firm chest.
Love and warmth enveloping your quaking heart and body. After a few moments, Kanji let go and lifted your chin up to meet his gaze. The warmth from earlier made it's way down to your tummy, and into your core. His deep eyes make your cheeks heat up when he smiles down at your shivering figure.
"Would you mind Aone and I teaching you?" He asked, pressing his thumb pad against your lower lip and dragging his own between his teeth.
"T-Teach me what?" You asked, cringing at the stutter leaving you.
"How to have sex, make love, whichever you want to call it." Aone blushed at Kanji's blunt words.
His own chest filling with embarrassment and a hot knot forming in his throat at the mentioning of having sex. The thought of being your first, teaching you things, made his adrenaline pump through his veins.
"Oh! Uh.." Your face heated up, tearing your gaze away from the duo and to your clenched thighs.
"If you don't want to, that's fine." Aone muttered out, scooting up behind you and rubbing circles on your hips with his thumbs.
"We can wait til you're more comfortable with it."
A small pause lingered in the air, making the lump in your throat harder to swallow when you muttered out your next words. Not knowing that your body was going to feel things you've never felt before.
"F-Fine. Teach me, please?"
//~~//~~//
'Warm' wasn't exactly how hot the air felt. Steamy? Nah, this felt more intense.
Oh, wait. Scalding. Yeah, that's the word.
"You're comfortable, right?" Aone asked, pressing your back into his firm chest. "It is about you, remember?"
"Y-Yes, Aone. I know.." You trailed off, eyes locked onto the wandering hands heading towards Kanji's lower half.
His hands clasped the hem of his shirt and lifted it over his torso, exposing the already hot skin underneath. Tossing it to the side before he took a breath and leaned forward, smirking as he did so.
"Gettin' so red over a little skin?" Kanji teased, chuckling when you whimpered. "You're such a cutie, Y/n."
You felt Aone's fingers working under the hem of your shirt, tickling your sides and hips as they found a small spot to comfortably sit and wait for further instruction at your waist.
"Lift your chin, that's it." Kanji smiled, lifting your chin up and pressing his warm lips against yours.
Lips working wonders and molding with yours so perfectly, it made your legs weak and breath shake. When your mind focused on the kisses Kanji gave you, your voice hitched when Aone's own attached themselves to the crook of your shoulder. Their warmth adds to Kanji's and makes your heart flutter.
"That's it, relax." Kanji mumbled between breaths, barely opening his eyes as he pressed deeper into your lips.
Swiping his tongue over your lower lip and slipping into the gap they made. The slick muscle swirled in your mouth, feeling out the grooves and crevices as the heat between your thighs grew. Aone's suckling of hickeys adding to the mounting pleasure you were feeling.
"So warm.." Aone muttered, letting his fingers lift up towards your still covered breasts an inch.
This felt so much more intense than the normal grinding against their crotches and touching through clothes. And with the feelings in your chest, you're surprised that you waited so long to tell them. All the worrying that you did was a waste of time. The soft skin of their fingers and palms calmed you, made you feel safe and less anxious.
Working miracles on my anxiety..
"May I take this off?" Aone asked, tugging lightly at your shirt.
Giving him a quick nod, you pressed against Kanji's shoulders and took a moment to admire his strong form. His slightly tanned skin made your body squirm as he undressed your top half. Kanji's eyes wandered and locked onto your cute pink bra.
"Aw, that looks like one of my favorites, baby."
Aone rolled his eyes, undoing the clasp on the back and letting the straps fall down your shoulders. Licking his lips, Kanji helped you get the bra off and let your garments join his shirt on the floor. His dark orbs fogging at the sight of your hard nipples, his lower lip being pulled between his teeth in a hard bite.
"Fuck. Excuse my language, bunny. But, I didn't expect your tits to look so... filling." He mumbled, lowered his head and let his lips latch onto your fight nipple and suck gently.
"I'll work on this one then." Aone smiles, cupping the underside of your left breast and molding it in his large hand.
"So soft.."
Shutting your eyes didn't stop the soft mewls from leaving your throat. Kanji's tongue makes your head spin as it spun around your areola, licking the soft flesh before nibbling it and sucking harshly. A soft moan was caught by Aone as he twisted your face to look up at him and kiss you. His rough lips contrast Kanji's in the best way possible with being tender and gentle.
He always took extra care of you in anything, worrying if he'd hurt you because of his large size. Even when you had told him you could take the big hugs and rough kissing, Aone still made sure that he was softer than a cloud's fluff. It always warms your heart, but sometimes it was fun to coax at the oblivious creature he was hiding from you sometimes.
"God, your tits taste amazing, darling." Kanji spoke up, muffled by the large lump of your nipple in his mouth.
Aone's eyes trained on your clenching thighs, watching them press against each other at the teasing of Kanji. With a few flicks of his wrist, Aone slithered his large hand under your skirt and palmed at your heated sex.
Feeling out the moist spot at your shivering cunt and pressing down before moving north and circling your clit over your panties.
"A-Aone-! Wait! Mmm~" You teared up, looking down at the large hand between your thighs.
The intensity that was gathering in the cloudy air around you only got worse when your eyes glazed over and watched Kanji lower his shorts and let them fall onto the floor. Looking past the bed's side, you noticed Aone's navy T-shirt and grey sweats underneath Kanji's shorts.
"Let's take these off~" Kanji mumbled, removing Aone's hand from your panties and pulling them off.
Your skirt and undies fell to the floor, exposing your drooling clit and clenching cunt. The sight made both the mens' cocks twitch in their boxers. Being the first to see your pretty pussy made their hearts flutter and feel special; and the growing need to make you feel that emotion too only made their adrenaline pump faster.
"C'mere." Aone lifted you up, placing you down onto his lap and groaning quietly when he felt your slick press against his bulge.
Kanji watched in ecstasy as Aone gripped your hips and pressed you against his erection, the sight alone making his dick pulse. Wishing he could be both you and Aone made him shiver, the thought washing over him while he observed the gentle grinding of nethers and swallowing the lump forming in his throat.
"A-Aone- oh, please~" Not knowing what you were begging for, your fingers found the nape of Aone's hair and gently tugged at them.
A low grumble and a sharp snap of Aone's hips were the only response you got. Feeling the tip pressing against your soft lower lips even though your clothes made you mewl, your cheeks heating up when you looked down and saw Kanji inching his way over to your grinding bodies.
"You look so ready, doll." Kanji mewled, a slight edge in his voice as if he was holding back.
"But I know better than to rush a good thing. We'll make sure you're fully prepared before we decide to stuff you full."
An embarrassed flush covered your face and neck, closing your eyes moments later and pressing your cheek into Aone's chest.
Stopping his movements though, Aone let out an agitated breath and spread both his and your thighs for Kanji to make his way forward. His face heated up when his lips connected with your cunt.
"Mmm~" He moaned out, convinced he's never tasted something quite this sweet in his lifetime.
Kanji let his instincts take over and worked his tongue around your clit and teasing your quivering hole. Aone's fingers find your inner thighs and tickle the soft skin before coming together to join Kanji's tongue and lips.
Mewling out pleas for more and soft moaning of how good you felt, Aone and Kanji had never felt more proud of you. Seeing you slowly loosen up and let the pleasure overwhelm you was a sight they knew they'd love to see again and again.
Working their fingers around your aching cunt, you writhed in their arms as you felt that odd knot forming in the pit of your stomach.
"K-Kanji~ Aone~ 'm g-gonna-'' You were cut off by Aone's lips once again.
His quiet groans filling your mouth and going down your throat as yours did the same. Aone's tongue prodded at yours, whimpering into your wet cavern and making your heart skip beats.
It's too much! All of it, it's too much! I'm gonna cum soon, shit-!!
"Aah~" Kanji groaned, licking up your spilling juices into his mouth. "You taste so good when you're a cumming mess, bunny."
"A-Aaah~ Kanji~"
Aone tensed up, seeing the glint in his lover's eye as you came undone; Kanji's sight slowly making it's way over to Aone's and locking on him.
A small smirk grazed the setter's lips and it flustered Aone.
"C'mon, up you go." Kanji chirped, lifting your body up and into his lap.
Aone took the opportunity to slip off his boxers, tossing them to the side and letting them join the pile below. When he lifted his gaze back over to you and Kanji, he felt his cheeks warm up when he saw the bulge pressing up between your thighs. Flustered and embarrassed, Aone turned his attention to the nightstand. Reaching inside the drawer to find two condoms for both him and his boyfriend.
"Got 'em, 'Nobu?"
Aone nodded, raising the two packages and placing them onto the mattress next to him. Kanji smiled, turning his attention back to the soft skin of your neck, peppering a handful of kisses before flipping you around to face him.
Using his shoulders as leverage, you squeaked. "Kanji?"
"Sorry, love, but I don't think I can wait anymore." With a soft kiss to the lips, Kanji's fingers wrapped around your wrist.
"Do you mind prepping me and Aone up real quick?"
That's when you finally looked down, seeing the large member pressing against your lower tummy and thighs. A hushed whimper escaped as you gazed down at the twitching length.
Geez, didn't think she'd look so adorable.. Kanji's mind wandered to your pink cheeks. The pretty shade fitting you perfectly and making him giggle, drawing your attention away from his erection and to his eyes.
"Here." Kanji guided your hand lower to grip his base, immediately eliciting a response from you as your fingers struggled to wrap around him.
"Th-There."
"I can barely get my hand around it-" You shivered, trying your hardest to not choke on a moan.
"Yeah, I noticed." Kanji smirked, continuing to guide your soft hand up and down his shaft. "Now, move your hand like this.."
After a few moments, you got the hang of helping Kanji get hard. Fisting the semi-soft length in your hand was getting you all kinds of embarrassed. His soft groans made your face flush more than once as your heart rate quickened only added onto it.
Soon, Kanji was bucking his hips up into your palm, gritting his teeth and throwing his head back as he desperately tried to gain more friction.
You found the sight of Kanji getting a little needy was a nice one, admiring it as you continued. Aone soon helped himself and started to pump his cock into his hand, biting his lip to stop the moans from escaping.
"I think that's enough, love." Aone chuckled, pulling your hand away.
Kanji mewled in response, wiping away the tears that had managed to leave a stripe down his cheeks. Aone smiled a little, stopping himself from fisting any further and letting go of his length.
"What's next?" You questioned, looking from one partner to the other.
"C-Condom, please?" Kanji sputtered out, blushing when Aone handed up one.
"The next part is getting inside of you, bunny." Aone answered, ripping his own package open and slipping the messy thing on.
Swallowing the lump in your throat, you watched as the condoms slipped onto their trembling cocks. The heat rising in your core didn't help the warmth in your cunt, feeling you clench on nothing when Aone brought you back into his lap.
"Ok, ready?" Kanji asked, pressing his hands into your thighs and peppering kissing on your collarbone and jaw.
"M-Mhm." You nodded, feeling your lower half tense up the moment his tip brushed against your clit.
A small cry left you begging to be stuffed full, the want to do just that egged on both males. The need to breed you and make your theirs was overpowering, but that had to be done another time, when you were more comfortable with sex.
But the fire burning in their hearts told them to comfort you; to take the utmost care of you at this time, which you greatly appreciated.
Their soft words of praise comforted your shaky heart as they began pushing their tips into your small hole.
"God, you're so tight, bunny- fuck-!" Kanji cursed, letting his forehead press against your shoulder.
"M-Mmph-" Aone choked, his grip on your waist seeming to strengthen as he pushed his head inside.
Your fluttering pussy lips slicked up their heads as they pushed past that little barrier inside. Knowing that they were both massive in size was surprising you when it didn't even hurt. A small ache was most of the pain you felt, maybe a light sting in your abdomen, but that was the most of it.
"Sh-Shit." Your muffled tears streaked down your cheeks. "Kanji- 'Nobu- Y-You're too b-big, aaah~"
"Does it hurt?" Aone asked, kissing your temple. "Want us to stop?"
Slowing their movements, Aone rubbing circles on your sweaty skin as you took in short breaths.
They're both so goddamn big! The stretch is starting to affect my breathing and my sight- God, it's so blurry-!!
"Baby, you ok?" Kanji brought you back from your cloudy thoughts, kissing your soft lips and groaning quietly.
You nodded, letting your hands take hold of Kanji's shoulders and take some weight off of Aone's chest. After a few seconds more, Kanji and Aone started to make themselves at home on your insides.
Their heads tapping against your sensitive cervix before dozens of kisses were butterflied all over your forehead and moist cheeks.
"Comfortable, baby?" Aone asked, his steamy breath fanning your ear and making you squirm again.
Giving a quick nod, both the males began to slowly grind more and more into you. Retreating their hips back until they could completely pull to the tip before sheathing back into your warm mound.
"..m-more, please?" You whimpered, sighing at the full feel and wanting more.
Kanji and Aone took some time to get used to the stretch and their cocks before they were able to fulfill your wishes. Easing you into a quick pace was easy, letting your pretty lips form the perfect O shape as moans and gasps left your lungs.
"You like it? Feeling good?"
You could only nod in response, letting your head fall on Aone's shoulder and arching your back against him. Kanji angled himself to where he could brush his pelvis against your clit moments after Aone grinded his balls against you. Not ever leaving you empty as one pummeled into your soft walls one after the other.
"Fuck! Fuck! Fu-uck~!" You cried, tensing up as you felt a familiar knot in your tummy.
"C-C'mon, hold it. Don't cum just yet, baby, please?" Kanji asked, slowing and grinding into your hole with Aone's cock brushing against his.
The feeling of being inside of you with Kanji was soon getting to be too much for Aone; the slickness of your lower lips and Kanji's cock stroking his underside made his head spin. He could feel his own load coming soon, which he found a little surprising since he could normally last a lot longer.
Kanji wasn't in the best shape either. The tightness of your hole and the thickness of Aone's cock being fucked against his got him so close. He had to edge himself, make it last. Make it last, Kanji.
Continuing their previous movements, Aone started creating dark purple hickeys that covered most of your neck. Lapping his tongue over the finished markings, Kanji soon picked up speed with Aone.
Chasing their highs made you cum, head reeling from the unbelievably mind blowing orgasm that ripped through your core and gut.
"A-Aaah~!" You cried, eyes rolling and drool pooling from the corner of your lips.
"A-Almost there, Y/n. Almost-"
Aone was first to erupt, Kanji soon followed afterwards and cumming their brains out. The extra cum oozed from the condoms and onto the bed between your hot bodies. The large damp spot only growing underneath you as Kanji pulled from your cunt and tied off his condom.
"H-Hehehe...~" You giggled, laying next to Aone and closing your eyes.
The shifting weight on the bed let you know Kanji and Aone were getting into their cuddle spaces. Pulling blankets to cover you and them, Aone sighed and pulled you to his chest. Kissing a line up your neck and finding comfort in your hair, nuzzling into you as he slowly drifted off to sleep.
"You did good, baby." Kanji whispered as to not wake up Aone, curling up into your backside.
"Th-Thank you for taking care of me." You mumbled, the heaviness in your eyelids begging for sleep.
Kanji gave a few more kisses to your cheek and neck before he too nuzzled up to your small frame and fell asleep. The steamy air surrounding you and your boyfriends made your sleep that much more peaceful.
The stress of the day long gone, and your comfort at it's peak in Aone and Kanji's arms.
//~~//~~//
(This, by far, was the longest one yet!!)
I've had this in my drafts for a while, but I honestly had fun writing it! I've never really written for characters like Aone or Kanji so this kind of opened up things to me I might need working on! <3
Sorry it's been a minute since I've last posted! Personal problems like anxiety and the lack of creativity was taking it's toll on me, but I'm fine now!!
Can't wait to see you next post!!

The wind was howling outside the whaling hut. It was so harsh the windows and doors were rattling in their frames, fighting to stay put. But the two occupants inside didn't notice. They were both too cold and uncomfortable and pointedly ignoring the other to do much more than sit by the fire, bundled in furs, wearing someone else's clothes underneath.
Of course, they were both as far apart from each other as physically possible whilst also staying within the warmth of the fire. Matthias was silent. Y/N was silent. Neither said a word.
Matthias leant forward and poked the fire with the poker, nudging the logs around. They sparked and crackled as fresh wood was added, feeding the fire. Matthias glanced over at Y/N, barely visible under the furs. "You need to eat."
"I'm not hungry."
"That does not matter," Matthias said, leaning back. "Because you're so cold it means you don't feel hunger. Your body needs to eat."
"I'm fine. I just want to sleep," Y/N muttered, tightening the furs around her, trying to block him out.
Matthias looked back at the pot that was simmering over the fire. "If you sleep, you'll likely not wake up again."
"Oh, good, that saves you from having to kill me," Y/N said, refusing to look at him.
"If I was going to kill you, I would have done it by now," Matthias replied, rolling his eyes as he spooned the soup into two bowls. "Now, eat," he said, holding the bowl out to her.
Y/N reluctantly reached out a hand from underneath the furs and took the bowl, putting it on the floor in front of her. "And if I don't want to eat?"
"Then you'll succumb to hypothermia and pass out," Matthias said, shrugging. "All Drüskelle learn that mistake in their first few months. Most recover. Some don't. Brum always says that a Drüskelle-"
"If I eat the damn soup, will you shut up?" Y/N snapped, turning to glare at him.
Matthias nodded. He watched Y/N intently as she picked up the bowl and took a small sip of the soup, letting it digest before taking another sip.
"It's good soup," she reluctantly admitted, dipping her spoon back in. "If you've poisoned it, I won't mind dying this way."
"For Saint's sake," Matthias muttered, swearing in Fjerdan under his breath. "I haven't poisoned it! I am eating it too."
Y/N raised her eyebrows but returned to her soup.
Silence fell in the whaling hut again.
"You can have the bed."
Y/N looked over at Matthias as she finished her soup. "Don't be ridiculous, there's room for two of us." Matthias was silent so Y/N looked at him again. "Oh, don't tell me little Matthias is scared of sleeping next to a woman."
"I am not..." He paused, forcing himself to calm down. "I am not scared."
"Good, then we will before sleep in the bed," Y/N said, standing up, setting her half-eaten soup aside.
Matthias reluctantly stood up too. He watched as Y/N clambered onto the bed, wrapping herself up in the furs and getting comfortable.
"Oh for Saint's sake, stop being such a prune and come here," she snapped. "You're the one going on about hypothermia and yet you're over there, freezing."
"I'm fine."
"Oh, look how the tables have turned," she muttered.
Matthias climbed into the other side of the bed and lay down on the very edge - as far away as possible from Y/N.
"Drüskelle," she said, turning her head to look at him. "Do you want to freeze to death? No? Then move closer."
He shuffled closer.
"Closer."
Mattthias shuffled even closer. Y/N could feel his cold skin against her back and shivered slightly.
"There, now neither of us will die in the night and we can go back to hating each other in the morning, happy?"
Matthias grunted, burying himself under the furs. Y/N turned onto her side and pulled the furs up over her shoulder, tucking them around her. She closed her eyes and wriggled down a bit, getting comfortable.
The wind kept on howling.
Tumblr media
Matthias awoke suddenly as something jolted him. He sat up, expecting to see Y/N standing over him with a knife, about to cut out his heart. But the room was empty. It took him a moment to realise that someone was crying and that the someone was lying next to him.
He looked down at her and could see the tears falling down her face, the terror clearly written on her face as she relived something. Matthias wasn't sure why, but he felt his heart ache for the girl. He wasn't immune to nightmares - no one was.
Part of him wanted to leave her. A Grisha deserved to live through the terrors they had seen as punishment. But he couldn't believe that this girl - barely younger than him - could be so heartless and brutal. at such a young age, what could she have possibly experienced and seen that would have traumatised her in such a way.
Matthias reached out a hand and put it on her shoulder, shaking her gently. "Roëd," he said, for he didn't know her true name. Neither one had decided to share that information.
Y/N let out a panicked yelled and sat up, almost falling out of the bed. She pushed Matthias' hand away, flinging back all of the furs until she was just in the shirt and pants she'd found in the corner of the hut. Y/N pushed herself up from the bed and bolted from the room and out into the cold, cold night.
Matthias quickly got up and followed after her, not wanting her to get lost in the Fjerdan landscape or end up being attacked because, despite the death threats and the mutual hated, he did care for her. She'd saved him from the shipwreck and, somehow, they were still going.
Y/N fell to her knees in the snow - in the dark - and plunged her hands into the cold, wet snow, needing it to ground her and wake her up from her nightmare. Matthias stood in the doorway, watching warily in the background.
"Sorry," Y/N said quietly, her voice almost being lost in the wind. She sniffled and ducked her head, hiding her face. "I'm sorry."
Matthias approached cautiously. He hovered behind her for a moment before kneeling down behind her, putting a hand on her shoulder. "Don't be sorry for something you can't control."
Y/N chuckled, a shiver wracking through her body. "You surprised that Grisha have nightmares too?" She asked, turning to look at him. "That we're human?"
Matthias was silent. Y/N scoffed quietly, knowing she was right.
Their silent argument ended abruptly when a wolf let out a loud howl, only a few feet away. Both Y/N and Matthias looked up, struggling to see the animal through the dark and blinding snow.
The wolf stalked forward, baring its teeth at Y/N. She didn't move.
"Don't attack it," Matthias said quietly, slowly rising to his feet.
"No offence, Drüskelle, but I'm not going to let a wolf attack me because it's a sacred animal to you," Y/N hissed.
"Just wait," Matthias insisted. "Let him move first. If he attacks first then we know."
"And if he just stands there?"
"Then we wait."
The wolf snarled, taking another step forward. It howled. And then turned around and walked off.
"Get up, slowly," Matthias said, holding a hand out to Y/N.
Y/N reached behind her and took his hand, letting him pull her into his side. Matthias wrapped an arm around her shoulders, trying to warm Y/N up, as they watched the wolf walk off into the night.
"I've never seen a wolf just leave before," Y/N said quietly, shivering under Matthias' arm.
"They're mainly peaceful if not provoked," Matthias replied.
"As are Grisha."
Matthias looked down at her, his eyes finding hers. He looked at her for a moment in silence. Y/N looked up at him. She met his gaze for only a few seconds before she swayed against him, her knees giving out and plunging her back into the snow.
Matthias fell to the snow with her, pulling her into his side and putting an arm under her legs, another around her back, and lifting her up out of the snow. He carried her back inside, sitting her in front of the fire.
He grabbed the furs off the bed and piled them onto her, wrapping them around her shivering form. Y/N didn't protest, her eyes closing involuntarily as she tried to stay focused on the fire.
"Now who's dying of hypothermia," she muttered, her teeth chattering as she gave Matthias a half-hearted smile.
Matthias sat down next to her and wrapped an arm around her shoulders, rubbing her shoulder as he tried to warm her up.
"For a man who hunts Grisha for a living, you are very determined to keep me alive," Y/N said quietly.
Matthias sighed to himself. "It was Grisha who killed my entire family. They set the village on fire and let it burn. My mother, sister and father all died. Because of Grisha."
Y/N was silent. Eventually, she spoke, her eyes focused on the fire. "Not all Grisha are good, Druskelle. Not all Grisha are bad. Like people. The Grisha who murdered your family are the minority. We are not all like that. And we are certainly not witches. We create from elements that already exist in the world."
"Such as?"
Y/N pulled her arm out from under the furs. She looked up at Matthias. "Are we friends?"
Matthias nodded. "We are."
Y/N nodded. She held her hand palm up and then made a scooping motion, her eyes closed. She felt Matthias stiffen as fire appeared in her hand, orange flames dancing around her fingers.
"It's not magic. I simply summon all the combustible gases in the world, for there are thousands, and fire appears." Y/N waved her hand and the fire vanished. She pulled her hand back inside the furs. "That's all it is. Small Science, as we call it. No magic."
Matthias nodded. He didn't seem to be able to speak. He eventually decided on what he wanted to say. "What was your nightmare about? Only if you want to tell me."
Y/N shifted closer to Matthias. "I'm sure you've heard of General Kirigan - or the Darkling."
"I think it'd be impossible to find someone in all of Ravka, Fjerda and beyond who hasn't heard of it."
"It?"
"It was not a man, nor a human. It is simply it."
Y/N smiled to herself. It slowly faded as she returned to her mind. "I was a Grisha under his orders when Sankt Alina first appeared. I was fresh out of school - a young Grisha desperate to prove herself. And he used me like he used hundreds of others. I was trapped under his control until King Nikolai broke us out.
"But the Darkling had done enough by then. Being used by him - controlled by him is something I do not wish to repeat. Sometimes in the night, I think I see him. I know he is long dead and burnt but... I hear his voice in the wind, I see his shadows in the darkness and all I can think about is what he did to me."
Matthias was silent. He knew about the Darkling. Everyone did. But very few knew about what it did to the young Grisha under its command.
"My name is Y/N Y/L/N, by the way," Y/N said quietly. "I feel like since I'm pouring my heart out to you, we should know each other's names."
Matthias smiled. "I'm Matthias Helvar."
Y/N nodded. She dropped her head onto Matthias' shoulder. "Nice to meet you, Matthias."
Matthias sat there, an arm around her shoulders, watching the flames dance away until morning came.
Tumblr media
It took them five days to find civilisation. The snowstorm passed after three days and it took them two days of walking - and almost falling off a cliff - to reach safety.
The inn wasn't much - it was full of Fjerdan sailors on their way out or back from long trips out at sea. But it was warm and it was safe - for now.
"I don't know how I feel about stealing," Matthias said as Y/N unlocked the door to their room.
"I didn't steal, I borrowed," Y/N corrected, walking inside.
"Are you going to give it back?"
"Indirectly, yes."
Matthias laughed. Y/N stared at him.
"Saints, Matthias, I didn't know you could laugh!" She exclaimed.
Matthias chuckled as he took his coat off and sat down on the bed, stretching his legs out.
"It appears we have learnt a lot about each other this past week," he said softly, smiling at her.
Y/N approached him and sat down on his right, dropping her head to his shoulder. "You know, I have no idea what Roëd means."
"What?"
"The other night, when I was having a nightmare, you called me Roëd..."
Matthias' smile grew. "It means red in Fjerdan."
"Red? Why red?"
"Well, when we first met -"
"When you kidnapped me, you mean."
Matthias rolled his eyes. "You were wearing a red skirt, like the one you're wearing now. Since I didn't know your name... I thought Roëd was subtle."
Y/N nodded, a smile working its way onto her face. "I like it."
Matthias put his arm around Y/N's shoulders - an action he'd found himself doing numerous times over the past week. He ran his thumb up and down her arm, gently following an imaginary line.
"What will you do now?" Matthias asked quietly.
The question had been praying on his mind for days now. What happens next. He could easily go back to Brum, resume his training, tell his tale. Y/N could easily return to wherever she came from - carry on leaving her life. Nothing would change.
Except something had changed. The world had shifted. Just a bit, but enough to know that there was no going back to the before.
"Find a ship back to Ketterdam," Y/N said softly. Her left hand was entwined with his, her fingers playing with his. "Tell my boss what happened and hope he gives me my job back. What about you?"
"I don't know."
"Have I changed you that much, Druskelle?" Y/N asked, tilting her head up to look at him.
Matthias looked down at her. "Perhaps. What is... Ketterdam like?"
"First of all, excellent pronunciation," Y/N said, looking back down again. "Second of all, it's shit."
"Then why would you want to go back?"
"Because it was the only place to welcome me after I left Ravka. I fitted in seamlessly there. No questions were asked about me or my powers. I got a job and they treat me well. It works for me."
"I cannot imagine what it must be like to be... persecuted everywhere you go."
"Saints, I have changed you!" Y/N said, looking back at him. She smiled. "It's hard. Trusting people is harder. I haven't used my power in years as a result but... I prefer it that way, oddly. I was used and wanted for my power in Ravka. In Ketterdam I am just me. I'm just Y/N."
Matthias stared at the wall for a moment. "I'd like to go somewhere like that. Where it is simply just... you and I. Simply Y/N and Matthias."
"No prejudice."
"No hatred."
"Just us."
Matthias looked back at her and leaned down, capturing Y/N's lips in a kiss before she had a chance to move. He leant back and pressed his forehead to hers.
"I'll miss this," Matthias said quietly, knowing deep down, that it would inevitably end as all good things did. "Us."
Y/N closed her eyes, pressing her lips together. "You know, Matthias, I could be in love with someone like you."
"I know. As could I."
And that was the truth. She could love him and he could love her. Despite the ways they'd been raised. Despite what they'd lived through and experienced at the hands of their people, both of them, Grisha and Druskelle, could and did love each other.
It was the truth and the pain of it. Knowing that their love was never meant to be.
And that it was never destined to last.

Yoonoh woke up on a strange bed, the mattress stiffer than the one he had back home. He refused to open his eyes, fearing that the daylight would worsen his headache.
Yoonoh woke up on a strange bed, the mattress stiffer than the one he had back home. He refused to open his eyes, fearing that the daylight would worsen his headache.
“Wake up, sunshine.” He groaned, all the memories from the past night hitting him like a truck. “Come on, I made breakfast.”
His eyelids finally fluttered open, frown softening at the sight of you in a messy bun and your cute pajamas.
“How come you look so fresh?” The dark circles under his eyes had deepened in the span of a few hours. Thank God he didn't have to work that day.
“I always look fresh.” You seemed to be more comfortable around him. Perhaps it was because you had to tuck him in last night. “Up.”
You tugged both of his limp hands, forcing him to sit up.
“What did you cook? It smells nice.” He scrunched up his nose like a little kid.
“Eggs, bacon, and hash browns.” Fast as lightning, he got up from bed. On his way to the kitchen, he noticed the blanket hanging from the edge of your sofa. Disappointment pinched his heart.
“Why didn't you sleep with me? You would've been more comfortable.”
You set two plates on the small table, pulling the pan out of the stove to serve them.
“You spread yourself all over the bed as soon as I laid you down.” You lied successfully. You didn’t have the heart to tell him you weren’t that comfortable yet.
You let the pan down on the kitchen counter, taking a seat in front of him.
“Do you still want to visit my father?” Sparkling orbs stared at him timidly, fearing his answer would be negative.
“I mean…” You hummed, trying not to give it as much importance. “I do want to go!” He quickly corrected himself, frantically shaking his hands. “It’s just that I don't want to meet your father like this.” He pointed at his bed hair, which had only become messier since he woke up.
“You’re acting like he's gonna see you.” There was a slight bitterness in your tone, along with a fake grin.
“Alright, let's do this instead...” Yoonoh sat up straight, clearing his throat as if he were about to give a speech. “We’ll have breakfast, you'll shower quickly, and then we’ll drive to my house so I can fix myself. How does that sound?”
“So I'm finally gonna see your mansion? How exciting.” You kicked his leg teasingly under the table, his cheeks inevitably dipping as he tried to suppress a smile. “I bet you have some peacocks in your backyard.”
“And there's also a dolphin in my pool.” He let out a hearty laugh, extending his arm over the table to grab your hand.
His house was most definitely not what you expected.
It was about the size of the one you grew up in, the decoration inside minimalistic. There were no expensive paintings framed with pure gold, only pictures of him and his family. There was a small backyard you could access through the French door in the kitchen. Half of it was occupied by a greenhouse.
“I had to donate the peacocks to the zoo.” He whispered as you looked through the glass door, squeezing your shoulders with his slim fingers.
“What a shame.” Hesitantly, he wrapped both of his limbs around your torso, letting his chin rest stop of your head. Your heartbeat was thumping loudly against your chest. Yoonoh surely felt it but decided not to comment on it.
“There’s a Tv in my room in case you want to watch something while I shower.” A hint of mischief adorned his honey-like voice. “Or you can come in and watch me instead.”
“Stop!” Your elbow connected with his ribs out of pure panic, making him bend in pain with his hands covering the injured spot.
“It was a joke...” He whispered, teeth gritting together.
I made him mad, you thought. Should you escape or face the consequences of his anger? All thoughts erased from your mind as he grabbed your calves, lifting you over his shoulder.
“Put me down!” You hit his back with closed fists, unable to see the expression on his face. “Yoonoh!”
He went up the stairs, proceeding to enter his room and throw you on his bed. Thousands of dirty scenarios crossed your mind before he threw himself on top of you, crushing your bones under his muscular body.
“My...ribs...”
“Oh, sorry, what is that?” To make matters worse, his fingers tickled your sides, provoking a fit of desperate giggles to escape your mouth. “I’m not hearing an apology.”
“Sorry! Sorry!” His hands finally stopped, giving you time to breathe. Nonetheless, he remained laid on your chest, using his forearms to lift his weight. “Aren’t you gonna shower?”
“I like you.”
The confession was so sudden, so raw it took you some time to finally react. But you had no words to give him an answer, instead, you combed your fingers through his long hair, massaging his scalp while waiting for him to speak up again.
“I never thought I'd be feeling more than friendly affection for you. Our agreement doesn't include love, after all. But I've started feeling like a teenager all over again. I can't help but get excited whenever you call me. Do you know how sweet your voice sounds through the phone?” He sighed, discouraged at your lack of response. “I guess you're not there yet.”
Instead of verbally answering, you planted a sweet kiss on his head, right where small, grey hairs had started growing.
“I’m not good with words.”
“That’s alright.” He snuck his hands under your back, holding you tightly as a sudden need to nurture you took over him. The mature image he had of you faded in less than a second, leaving behind a young, troubled woman. “I’ll shower quickly so we can go see your pops. I bet we’ll get along just fine, maybe even go golfing when he wakes up.”
“I forgot you're almost the same age. Creepy.” He smiled, though uneasiness started steering in his guts.
“Does that bother you?” He asked without giving it a second thought.
“I don't know yet.”
(...)
The man with high cheekbones and bruised skin laid limp on the hospital bed. Yoonoh had been working on his case for about a month, yet, it only started feeling real the moment he entered the room.
“This is my dad.” All emotions had escaped your eyes as if your soul wasn't there anymore. Only an empty shell.
“You look so much like him.” he was afraid touching you wouldn't be the right thing to do, so instead, he said: “He seems like a suitable golf buddy.”
Tension finally loosened its grip around his body as you snorted, pigment returning to your cheeks. Finally, he wrapped his hand around yours.
“He will wake up, y/n.”
“He’s taking his sweet time.” You glanced back at the laying figure, skinnier with every day he spent asleep. “I want someone to pay for taking away the last person that loved me.”
The last person that loved you. Would Yoonoh be able to fill that spot? Not yet, probably. He couldn't modify the depth of his feelings, but he could surely give you the vengeance you longed.
“Do you trust me?” With your eyes still glued to your father, you nodded. “Then I can assure you we’ll win the case.”
“I know we will.”
He sat silently with you, holding your hand without saying a word. The smell of alcohol and the beeping noise of machines made him nauseous. He hated hospitals. You noticed the change in his demeanor, his hand becoming cold while holding yours with strength.
“Do you wanna go?”
“No!” He smiled through the pain, scooting his chair closer to lay your hand on his lap.
He wouldn't agree to get his ass off the plastic chair. You had to tell him you were hungry for him to finally stand up, still clutching your hand like your father did when you were still a kid. His parental behavior caused several emotions to stir inside your guts, so mixed up you couldn't quite put a finger on any of them.
“What do you want to eat?” The tension finally left his body once out of the building.
“Soup.” You smiled while swiping your thumb on top of his knuckles. “I know a place, but to be honest, it isn't good. So we can go to the store and get the ingredients to- but you can't cook.”
“I’m up for a cooking lesson if you are.” He wanted to see your pretty smile again. Maybe making a fool of himself would help. “Let’s hit the road.”
“Wow, so cool.”
“I know.”
(...)
“Can you grab that can of chicken broth?” You pointed at the high shelf, letting go of Yoonoh’s hand to allow him to move freely
“I have a better idea.” He dragged you by the arm so you were standing in front of him, trapped between his body and the shelf. “I’ll lift you so you can reach it.” Matching his words, his hands grasped your waist, ready to carry you.
“Stop!” You slapped his hands repeatedly between giggles. Ignoring your complaints, he started lifting you. “Yoonoh!”
“Yoonoh?” A feminine voice had him placing you back on your feet in less than a second.
“Seryeong, I didn't expect to see you here.” His hands remained seated on the curve of your waist.
“Neither did I. I was surprised when Sungchan told me you'd left early yesterday.” She seemed a bit older than you but still younger than the man behind you.
“I had some matters to take care of.” She eyed you from head to toes with a smug grin plastered on her lips. Just by the look of her clothes, you could tell she was as wealthy as Yoonoh. You feared the scene would turn into a tv worthy drama.
“I’ll go get the chicken breast.” You tried escaping his grip, only to be pulled closer to his warmth.
“No need to. It's already inside the cart.”
Why am I so dumb?
“Does your father know about your little girlfriend?” She asked without hesitation.
“I guess.”
“And why didn't he tell me anything?” She cocked an eyebrow, his hands finally loosening around your body and allowing you to move from your position.
“Look, this is something you should talk about with him. Now, if you excuse us...” With a hand on your shoulder, he began pushing the cart to the next aisle, the chicken broth long forgotten.
“Is this some kind of arranged marriage situation?”
“Something like that.” His hands were tense while holding the cart, knuckles turning white from the strength used. “Before you start asking, I'm not really in the mood and I don't want to direct my bad mood toward you. Let's talk about something else, alright?”
Who was that woman that had the power to turn him into a literal raging ball of fire with just a few words?

The room was dimly lit with candles and the r oaring fire that burned passionately at the fireplace. White tiles were plastered with gold diamonds, the shade almost as if it was antique jewelry, Old but could tell an amazing story. The colour completing the beige-coloured room
You waited patiently, cross-legged glaring at the clock that ticked every second or so. 10 minutes you thought to yourself while you grind your teeth. That man seemed to be early only when it was for his own convenience, how distasteful.
Just as you finished that thought you saw the dark oak wood door being pushed open. A man walks in, he wears a white loosely fitted blouse, with bishop sleeves which was decorated with frilly fabrics. Along with death-black dress pants that were worn up to the waist. His face where his mask usually is is replaced with glasses and the man's delicate bubblegum pink hair is loosely braided and thrown on the right side of his shoulder.
“Your late” you glare crossing your arms
He let out a sigh “Well pardon me for taking a while to get ready, It's almost like you didn’t come here unannounced” he spoke sarcastically.
He walked over to the glass tray and picked up a small glass cup with a gold ring around it and poured himself a drink. He eyes you “Would you care for a drink y/n?”
“I don’t drink”
He shrugs “Suit yourself”
“Technoblade, I didn't come here for idle chatter.”
He arched his eyebrow slightly “Oh?” Techno placed his cup down “Pray do tell, what exactly did you come here for?” You watched him walk to the other side of the room as he said that.
“I-“ you could even finish before being rudely interrupted by a rustling noise. You watched as your patience grew thinner by the minute he took out a black vinyl disc and placed it on a wooden box making sure the oin was adjusted well. A soft tune of the piano came out of the music player.
“Would you care for a dance?” He holds out his hand, you stare at it contemplating whether you should grab his hands, you really shouldn't, you didn’t want to play his games, you wanted what you came for, but then again it would harm a dance. Or course your brain chose the latter considering how you delicately placed your hand in his letting him place his hand on your waist the the other on your shoulder. He lead the way,(just like he always does)
“Apologies for interrupting music helps me think.” He spoke as he spun you around the floor “They calm the voices” . You knew all about the voices, how much they love to chant and clog his brain with different variations of thoughts, perks of being his ex-partner you suppose. But you watched as he hid a smirk, you guess he’s just telling only half the truth. You roll your eyes
“You can finish”
“Wouldn’t you mean start idiot” you snap
“Meh”
You clicked your tongue in annoyance, his inability to ever grasp the mood of the situation was flawless. It seemed as if he never cared about the other person's feelings, unless you were the god of death you were out of luck for a serious conversation. You’ve dealt with that for decades
You could remember once in a lifetime the two of you were partners, fast and precise that's how the job went. The blood god and the angel of destruction are an amazing duo. You remember when the two of you used to watch as people begged on their knees for their life or perhaps a mercy kill. Watching as your foes tried to retreat to their bases only for their pitiful lives to end in such a disgraceful manner. At the end of the day the two of you stood in the battlefield side by side knowing the world could shake in fear knowing you two were alive
And you loved it like that desire to make people fear you brought giddiness to your body and enlightened your world. You wanted one thing and it was to get revenge.
Revenge on all who did you wrong from your youth up, and now you were strong enough to bring it tenfold.
Everything was fine, It wasn’t until one day the two of you had sat down for a cup of tea like you usually did on Thursday evenings. He told you he wanted to retire, he was done with the killings and the torture.
He was finally putting down the title ‘Blood god’
At first you thought it was a joke but then you saw his eyes and they were as serious as he could ever be, anger rose up in you unable to process the statement.
How could he leave you like this, he promised to be by your side when no one else would.
A liar that's would your made him out to be
A slap to the cheek was all you left him that day
Now here you were decades later, hand in hand dancing to the sounds of the instruments harmonizing becoming one just the way you two were.
He spun you around gracefully on the tiled floor, there's something about dancing in an empty room that makes you feel weird inside. What was this feeling? Him making you feel weak in the knees, perhaps it was the fact the last time you did this it was when you two were young and reckless. He always seemed to know how to brighten your life, even to the point the friendship you two had was envied amongst the other gods.
He twirled you across the room dipping you slightly “Cat caught your tongue”
You rolled your eyes “As if”
You saw outside the glass panes, the sky was painted a blood orange mixed with lavender purples and hints of blue. The sun slowly sets, bringing the nightfall.
You chuckle to yourself, how romantic of the sky to show such a sight for people who would die before dating each other.
You turn your gaze to the god “I need you one last time” you say cutting to the chase
Technoblade glared at you “I already told you I’m retired, don’t be so stubborn”
“I’m not, your being selfish putting your needs before anyone else's”
He snorts “Isn’t that what you're doing y/n? Or am I reading the situation wrong?” He says sarcastically “Plus I thought you made it clear that you wanted nothing to do with me, or was that slap something you did on impulse and you couldn’t face me after?”
You grind your teeth “It was not, and why are you making it seem like you're the victim? You're the one who wanted to leave me!” You snapped
He took his hands away from you and pinched the bridge of his nose “See, this is why we cannot have a conversation. You always jump to conclusions” he growls
“I do not!”
“You do! I never intended to leave your side, only retiring. Is it so bad I wanted to stop killing and do something better with my life, and here I thought you’d be happy with it.”
You stared at him shocked, “I..”
Was he right? You were known to act on impulse which did cause problems in the long run but he’d be there to be by your side every time. But yet, you couldn’t fathom the thought of him leaving his life behind to start a new one. Why? You weren’t sure.
Techno sighed “You act so tough when actually you're broken inside. The thing is you weren’t mad at me for retirement, you were mad that things were changing. You're scared of change because you don’t know where you’ll fall between it all.”
The piano falls into a soft handsomely rhythm
The violinist quietly drag their bows delicately
You cast your eyes aside, you couldn’t argue with the truth. You swallow hard fighting back the tears. You couldn’t fathom the amount of times you’ve been in the wrong or how much you’ve hurt him
Stupid
Stupidstupidstu-
A hand is placed on you head
“You think too much, stop that”
“I’m sorry”
“For overthinking or for being impulsive” he questions
“Both” you whisper keeping your eyes on the floor
“And?”
You huffed “You were right about everything”
He grinned showing his pearly whites “I’m sorry what was that? I couldn’t hear you?”
You laughed slightly making your worries go away for the time being “You asshole, get your head out of the skies as if I’m repeating that again”
He chuckles shrugging “Worth a try”
“So, let's get something straight. I’ll help you one last time then I’m forcing you to retire. Seriously you have no say so.” He eyes you “You probably need therapy too jeez”
“Fuck You I’m perfectly fine”
“Whatever helps you sleep at night” he responds ushering you out the room
“Bold of you to assume I sleep”
“Bruhh”

↳{Fluffy first baths together are nothing short of what you’d expect with Inosuke}
The gentle pitter-patter of water droplets drizzling down bamboo shoots and swaying green leaves filled the otherwise quiet space. The welcoming scent of dew and greenery danced through the night air as you overlooked the outdoor bathing area, “absolutely perfect” you thought as your muscles cried in despair. You, along with your team of idiots and sweet Nezuko, had walked miles in search of a home bearing the Wisteria crest, everyone in desperate need of some rest, repair, and (hopefully) lots of delicious food. “Come in, young child, as weary as you may be, your body needs food to begin the healing process” a grainy voice beckoned. An elderly woman, just barely 5 feet wrapped in purple with shimmering silver hair, waited patiently beside the open door, “I think my husband was too excited to greet you all because he got carried away and made far too much food” she continued. “Oh don’t worry, my boys are very capable of eating you out of house and home, especially my boyfriend” you giggled while climbing the wooden steps to meet her.
You walked side by side to the dining room, the smell of beef stew and rice already reaching you, “Thanks again, to you and your husband, we’ve spent weeks running around and I know we desperately needed the break” she chuckled, “No need child, my husband misses the thrill of battle even in his old age, so we are thrilled to have you.” your eyes widened slightly but before you could ask the shorter woman of her husband's past, a loud crash could be heard behind the thin sliding door. Behind its papery protection was a scene that couldn’t be anymore hilarious; wrestling on the floor was an older man, thick and burley with round rims sliding down the bump of his nose, hovering over a wailing Zenitsu whose body was being forced into a backbend with his head held tightly in a choke-hold by the man’s hairy arms. Tanjiro stood beside the duo desperately trying to pull his friend out from under the other, trying to talk over the hefty laughter and screaming, while Inosuke stood cheering the man on as if this were some sort of cage fight.
You could feel the twitch in your eye act up, ready to pull them apart but before you could open your mouth the elderly woman cleared her throat, causing the wild bunch to freeze. Her husband's eyes slowly fell on hers as fear overcame them and as for the other three, they couldn’t help but shiver at the dead set look on yours. “What’s going on here?” the women commanded, her steel set tone sending the group scrambling into seated positions as she prowled into the room- you followed slowly behind her. Tanjiro croaked first, “W-well Mr.Shimura was telling us about his days in the force and he just wanted to show us some of his, uh, moves'' Tanjiro's voice wavered a bit at the end, not sure if ‘moves’ was the right way to describe assault. “Y/n! Please don’t let this man torture me anymore, he’s crazy!” the blonde rushed to your side with teary eyes and a tight grip on your arm. The women pulled her large husband up by his ear, “Don’t worry, you children enjoy your food, my husband,” she tugged on the lobe for emphasis, “and I will be off to bed” she turned to you, “I assume you’ll be able to find the bathing area and your room?” “Of course” you assured. The moment the couple became shadows behind the door, you could hear the wife’s grumbling- you couldn’t help but chuckle.
Unsettled by the silence, you turned to find all eyes on you, waiting for a reprimand you had no intention of delivering, “Oh ease up, eat before the food gets cold'' a collective sigh could be heard around the table, your hand gentle releasing the part of Zenitsu that was still clinging your clothes. The spot open next to Inosuke was as inviting as the mouth-watering scent of a hot meal that had been calling your name since further down the hallways. Your fingers faintly fell on the tuft of your boyfriend's hair, ruffling them a bit, before diving into your own bowl of rice and soup. While Inosuke felt your small act of affection and craved it a bit more, he only offered a messy smile as he shoveled spoonfuls into his mouth.
Ceramic dishes once filled with hand-cooked deliciousness were now cleaned empty, stacked into small towers all across the wooden table in some sort of toppling city. The room was almost empty too, Zenitsu and Tanjiro both eager to wash the wear away and to finally allow themselves to be consumed by uninterrupted dreams, had already taken off for the night. “I’m going to die,” the bloated heap on the floor cried, his duo-toned hair sprawled out around him and his robe strewn on the ground. You laughed, “No, Inosuke, you aren’t going to die” you laid on the carpet beside him, propped up by one elbow. As the man heaved and sighed as if he were going into labor, your nose caught a whiff of something salty and musty and earthy and gross, “I swear if you don’t go shower right now, my eyes are going to melt from my skull” you complained nasally as you pinched your nostrils shut; You were met with only louder moaning and heaving. “C’mon everyone else already-” you stopped yourself short, an idea too good to pass up crossing your mind. “Since everyone else is already tucked away, why don’t we bath together?” before you could even finish the question, Inosuke sat up faster than light, his eyes challenging yours as if saying “Are you playing me?”. “We never get to do anything just us so if you're up for it, I’m down” you concluded slightly smug as he clung to each word you uttered like a puppy waiting for a treat. You stood to leave, crouching down once more to balance your fingers below his chin, forcing him to face you, “But, no funny business”.
You didn’t even have to look to see Inosuke was following, his second set of steps echoing yours as if they were the thunder that follows lighting; two things equally as powerful, yet relied on the other for strength. Again, you were greeted by the soft flow of water streaming into the natural spring, the brilliant moonlight above lighting the large basin carved from polished rock that sat in the middle of the space. “Turn around” you asked, to which Inosuke surprisingly compiled too with only a tiny grumble. You slid your filthy clothes off layer by layer, the black garments piled together as you tip-toed into the warm water, the steam instantly feeling irresistible on your skin. “I-I’ll close my eyes so you can get in, too” you stuttered, the heavy realization of the intimacy that was to come next, an intimacy that had never been shared before. “Whatever you want, we’ll be naked anyways in the water” Insouke pointed out as he too discarded his smaller pile onto yours, however, you didn’t dare peek before you heard the breaking of water as he climbed in, didn’t dare breathe as he groaned in relief. Slowly, you uncovered your eyes, trained steadily past the demon slayer's face; awkwardly and in unusual silence, you two sat five feet apart, waiting to see who dared to move first.
Well of course it was Inosuke who shuffled through the water first towards you, “You can look at me, ya know” he said with a sort of want in his voice, as if your gaze offered an approval he sought from only you. Whether the pink that painted his skin was from the temperature or the heat of the moment, you couldn’t tell, but you didn’t dwell on it for long because other things piqued your interest. While the number of times you’ve seen Inosuke wear a shirt was almost non-existent, the steam rising from the water altered his scarred chest into something else; it was more chiseled, more tanned, each dip and mark was more perfect, the reflection below somehow glowed in a way that was more than you had every painted Inosuke to be and it took your breath away. “What are ya looking at?” he asked defensively, fidgeting in an almost timid way; it reminded you that you shouldn’t be nervous around him, “You, ya dummy”. He scoffed at your bluntness, grateful to hear the normal bite in your tongue instead of the disgust he feared you’d feel towards him. His stunning pair of green orbs watched as you leaned closer to him, arms stretched as you grew even closer, “What the hel-” he panicked slightly only to be fooled as you grabbed something that was behind him; two bottles waved in front of his face as you teased, “What? Afraid of some soap, piglet?”. He muttered a string of complaints, ‘tease’ and ‘mean’ being the only two you could work out.
You squeezed the white shampoo into your open palm, setting it down somewhere on the edge of the bath, “May I?” you asked, hovering your hands beside his head. He sucked on his teeth before mumbling a raspy “fine”, easing himself between your awaiting limbs. You worked the suds into his scalp, gently massaging his dark roots with the pads of your thumbs before working your way down to bunch his falling strands, lathering them in the floral-scented soap. As you worked to cover every last inch of his scalp in bubbles, Inosuke struggled to keep quiet; his half-lidded eyes fluttered with every circular rub, his mouth slightly agape as he relished in your touch and had to work at suppressing the purrs that threatened to escape his chest like a cat.
“Bend down a little, will ya” you pushed against his head till he was close enough to the water that when he tipped back, his long tresses would be covered. You rinsed his hair gently, taking your time to enjoy this rare chance  with your loved one (along with the funny faces you knew he was making). Inosuke wanted to say something, anything would do really, but he just couldn’t put syllables together as if with every trail your fingers followed, you sucked away his ability to think. You had already rid his scalp from the soap, however, you weren’t ready to let go just yet; you ushered him out of the water so you could use your nails to push the soaked strands back, twirling them into a loose bun at the back of his head. Inosuke was so close, he was sure he’d make it out of this without any weird noises but the subtle scratching against his skin was too much for any man. A low rumble emerged from his throat followed by a relieved sigh, “If I knew all it took to tame this wild boar was a few head scratches, I’d have started a long time ago” you giggled, sliding your palms down the length of his neck to rest on his shoulders, “all done”. His brows furrowed at the weight behind his head and the lack thereof on his back, “It’s a bun” you explained, “Yea, well I feel bald” “Don’t knock just yet, it helps keep your hair from your face when you’re fighting, plus I think you look hot with it” you tightened your hold on him for a second as a blush crept its way onto his skin.
“It's getting late, you can get out if you want, I’m going to wash up” you reached for the same bottle of shampoo, tipping it over to collect its contents, but before the suds could touch your skin, Inosuke’s grip caught your wrist. “I’ll do it” he stated firmly, “You don’t have to-” “I’ll do it” he repeated, already taking the bottle. A glop of shampoo slapped against his palm as he rushed to spread it between his two hands. You closed your eyes, ready to be serenaded by his sweet touch when you were quickly reminded of who you were dealing with here- the furthest thing from sweet. Water splashed haphazardly as Inosuke drilled into your skull, roughly kneading your scalp. “Ouch! Stop it! Is that what it felt like to you?! Any harder and I’ll be the bald one!” you yelled, moving away from his hands still hanging above the water. Inosuke shrunk a little, visibly upset as he looked to his right at nothing specific. Instantly regretting your reaction, you acted to fix the situation, “Here” you gently placed his thick fingers against your scalp once again this time placing yours above his, easing them into a gentle, rhythmic massage. “See,” you sighed, “not everything in life is a race.”
Inosuke looked at the way your face fell at the feel of his fingers gently working against you, he almost had to double-take to make sure it was his touch that was providing you so much pleasure- in fact, it sort of inflated his already bulging ego. Although he spent less time washing and rinsing your hair as you had hoped (you could have sat there for hours) the water was growing cooler and time was nipping at both your ankles, reminding you of the sleep you oh so needed. Washed and feeling refreshed, you reached for his shoulders, using them to glide through the water until your chest was pressed against his, becoming more familiar with the feel of his warmth against yours. Your arms dangled over his shoulders with your head buried in his neck, while his large palms found themselves holding your waist, “this was fun” you whispered into his skin. Inosuke grunted, exhaustion creeping up on him too. “Let go to bed” you yawned ready to detach yourself reluctantly from the strong man when you were suddenly carried above the water, exposed and shivering you wrapped your legs instinctively around him. “What are you doing?” you asked embarrassed and flushed red. A wide grin overtook his face as he held you tighter, “Figured you’d be too weak to walk after I almost put you to bed with my magical fingers” he replied as he trudged through the water and out the bath, two towels already waiting to dry your skin.
Later that night as you both lay covered in cotton robes and silk sheets surrounded by the gentle buzz of the others snoring around the room, together on one futon with eyelids as heavy as stones, something occurred to you. “Hey babe?” you whispered, getting a half grunt in response, “you never took that bun out, did you?” the arm that was holding you securely to his side flicked you gently, “hush women” he breathed. You chuckled low, snuggling closer into Inosuke's warmth, falling effortlessly into a peaceful sleep.
Thank you~

infinities within infinities
Tumblr media
"Don't get me wrong," Xie Lian says, "I'm really grateful for the donation, but I don't think it's right to name the library after me."
But the man in the three-piece suit seems insistent. "You're a groundbreaking force in the world of philosophy," he says ardently. "I've read your Man, Thrice Ascended at least ten times. What you have to say about the concept of self as the infinite is revolutionary." He grins. The leather of the eyepatch over his right eye gleams in the sunlight. "The least you deserve is to have libraries named after you."
Xie Lian looks him over. This Hua Cheng is known as a reclusive billionaire, but there’s nothing withdrawn about him now, as he surveys Xie Lian with a bright eye. Instead, he’s almost preternaturally relaxed, hands in his pockets, smiling as bright as if he’d captured the sun. Despite the money and the insistent words, there’s nothing intimidating about him.. Xie Lian rather likes him.
“Well, thank you, I suppose, Mr. Hua,” he says carefully. He still isn’t sure about the Xie Philosophy Library concept. He looks up at the building and tries to imagine his name on the placard; it just seems preposterous. The dreams of a very young graduate student who thought he could change the whole nature of philosophy. Now, a fool’s wish. That it would be granted so suddenly, and by the young man in front of him who can’t be out of his twenties? Unimaginable.
“No need to thank me,” Hua Cheng says, shaking his head. “The very least I could do. Do you need a ride anywhere, Professor?”
**
Hua Cheng’s car might as well be a spaceship for how much it sticks out among the dumpy minivans and compact cars that surround it in the parking lot. Black, sleek, and gleaming, it truly seems to have beamed here from some point in a glittering future. Hua Cheng unlocks it with the touch of a button, and then, with another, the passenger side door swings open of its own volition. Xie Lian peeks inside. The interior is black as well, but for some touches that stand out in burning crimson.
“Go on, Professor.” Hua Cheng is leaning on his side of the car, casting a sideways glance at him. “Make yourself comfortable.”
Xie Lian obeys, ducking his head to get in. “You really needn’t call me Professor,” he says as Hua Cheng joins him on the driver’s side.
“What should I call you, then?” Hua Cheng’s smile is devastatingly brilliant, and Xie Lian is glad he’s sitting, because his knees have just gone to jelly. “I could call you gege, if it’s not too informal.”
He’s teasing -- at least, Xie Lian thinks he’s teasing -- but honestly the word comes out of his mouth more naturally than professor, and Xie Lian likes the sound of it better. “Gege is fine,” he says lightly.
“But in return,” Hua Cheng says, starting up the car, “you have to call me San Lang.”
“Why?” There’s something buzzing in Xie Lian’s brain now about the concept of naming, what we call ourselves versus what others call us, but he shunts it aside.
“Why do you think?” The car pulls out of its space, and a low rumble echoes in Xie Lian’s gut as it starts to navigate the parking lot. Hua Cheng is glancing at him between peeks in the rearview mirror. “You know what they say about us billionaires, we’re eccentric. Humor me.”
“Very well, San Lang,” Xie Lian replies, and he likes the sound of that, too.
It’s ten minutes of buzzing around the downtown streets before Xie Lian realizes he never gave a destination. “San Lang,” he says carefully, “where are we going?”
“Here and there,” Hua Cheng says. “I want to pick your brain about Man, Thrice Ascended.”
“Oh.” Xie Lian is flattered, and honestly the concept of riding around aimlessly in this sleek machine appeals to him. “Go right ahead, then.”
“To tell you the truth,” Hua Cheng says, “I have trouble wrapping my head around the concept of the self as infinite. Unless you believe in a higher power, the concept of self seems painfully finite to me, as it only exists between birth and death. Isn’t that a pretty limited span?”
“Only temporally,” Xie Lian replies. “Did you know that there are 22 million seconds in the average lifetime?”
“22 million is a lot, but it’s not infinity,” Hua Cheng counters.
“Ah, but a second isn’t instantaneous. Seconds take time. If you’ve ever tried to hold a plank for more than a minute, you know that well.” And he really does look like the type who could hold it. If not for two. “The unit of time I’d rather use is the moment.”
Hua Cheng glances at him. The car pulls onto the highway. “The moment?” he asks, gently spurring Xie Lian forward.
“Exactly,” Xie Lian says. “The moment is instantaneous. Maybe there are hundreds of millions of moments in the span of a single second of time. Maybe more than that. We can conceptualize, then, that each second of a lifetime contains within it infinite moments, and each lifetime 22 million infinities.”
“But a moment is hardly an appreciable measure of time,” Hua Cheng says. “How many moments can we experience as moments with our limited consciousness? The moments experienced are still finite to the mind of the human who tries to count them. Even if you count as fast as you can, you can’t count to 100 within the space of a single second, much less infinity.”
“You’re asking good questions,” Xie Lian comments.
Hua Cheng glows a little. “I told you, I’ve read the book a thousand times.”
“Well, if you did read the book, then you know that our concept of moments here is merely a framework.” They’re driving along the coast now, the bay blue and the sun starting its daily fizzle from yellow to red. “The infinities that truly populate the self are not of time, but of possibility.”
“Infinite choice in each moment.” Hua Cheng nods. “Explain it to me one more time, please, won’t you, gege?”
There’s a little plaintive moan in his voice - just a sliver of an entreaty - and it gives Xie Lian the goosebumps. Here is someone who’s truly appreciating his work, and he’s pleasant to look at and his voice is pleasant to the ear, and Xie Lian is reeling with how much good sensation is rolling into him with every second of this drive. It’s like the best of good dreams, and he doesn’t want to think of it ending.
“In any moment -- and I do mean moment, with our earlier definition,” he says, “I could lean to the left. I could lean to the right. I could blink. I could lean to the left but just a little bit harder. I could think of the color red. I could think of the color blue. I could speak. I could stay silent. I could open the door and throw myself out of this car, if I wanted.”
“Please don’t,” Hua Cheng interjects, sounding a little unnerved.
“It’s just a possibility,” Xie Lian reminds him. “There are, essentially, an infinite number of things I could do with each moment of my life. Each of them takes some time, but the process of choosing is instantaneous. So you have infinite possibilities in every single moment of infinite moments.”
“Not infinite possibilities," counters Hua Cheng. "What you decide to do in one moment, as you said, takes time. The time it takes to perform that action necessarily negates the infinite nature of the next moment. You can’t make certain decisions while performing other actions.”
“Your possibilities are still infinite in each moment,” Xie Lian argues. “Just because some actions can’t be taken doesn’t mean there aren’t still infinite possibilities open to you. Think of numbers. An infinite number of numbers end in the digit 4. It’s still an infinite set, even though numbers that end in the digit 5 aren’t included.”
Hua Cheng frowns. “Perhaps my limited mind isn’t fully able to capture it,” he says after a time. “You’re very impressive, gege.”
Heat blooms in Xie Lian’s cheeks. “Thus,” he says, “we have the three ascensions. When the mind is able to grasp the concept of infinity within limited time, it ascends once. The second ascension comes when one accepts that infinite actions can be performed within that limited time. And the third ascension…”
“...is when the mind grasps that the possibilities are infinite for each of an infinite number of moments,” Hua Cheng fills in. “Infinities within infinities, all within the self.”
They’ve pulled off to a scenic outlook point on the bay. Hua Cheng eases the car into one of three parking spots and turns off the engine. He turns to Xie Lian. “Gege always explains it so well,” he says brightly. “Thank you for indulging me.”
Xie Lian can feel the flush creeping into his cheeks. He looks away. “You’re welcome.”
Another beep, and the car’s doors are opening again. Hua Cheng gets up, rounds the car to Xie Lian’s side, and holds out his hand.
They stand for a time side by side, watching the reddening sun dip its toes into the rippling water of the bay. There’s a strange peace to standing here, Xie Lian thinks, with this person he barely knows but is so ardent about his work. I’m safe. I’m appreciated. The sureness of that is unexpected but so, so welcome. Xie Lian thinks back, trying to remember the last time he felt that way. He can’t recall.
“It’s beautiful,” he murmurs. Cars thunder past on the road behind them.
“This is one of my favorite spots,” Hua Cheng says. “I’m always taken by the vastness of the ocean here. It seems so full.” He gestures down to where the water buffets the base of the cliffs below them. “Like it’s a moment from overflowing.”
Xie Lian ponders this. “I’ve never thought of the ocean as full or not,” he says. “The implication being that no more water can be added; that it’s complete as is, existing within its bounds.”
“It’s a philosophical puzzle, isn’t it?” says Hua Cheng lightly. “Of course, climate change is solving it as we speak. Rising sea levels and all. It seems the ocean has the potential to be boundless, even as we denote lines between sea and shore.”
“And the question then becomes, how accurately can we draw those lines? And is it human folly to even attempt to do so?”
“Of course,” Hua Cheng says, “none of these problems has practical application.”
Xie Lian laughs. “Most of philosophy has no practical application. That’s why it’s philosophy.”
“I wouldn’t say that,” Hua Cheng replies. “Your philosophy has had effects on my psychology, at the very least. To think of myself as infinite has changed the way I look at the world.”
“And how does it look?” Xie Lian inquires, tilting his head.
Hua Cheng gazes at him, then turns back to face the sea. “Boundless,” he says.
Xie Lian nods. The wind whips past them, whispering coldly against his cheeks and ears. He shudders.
Without a word, Hua Cheng removes his long coat and drapes it over Xie Lian’s shoulders. The coat is warm with his body heat, and all that heat seeps into Xie Lian in a rush. He draws in a breath. When Hua Cheng’s fingers touch his neck to adjust the collar, he wants to shiver again, this time not from the cold.
“Gege.” Hua Cheng’s honey-rich, low voice touches his ear like the strains of a cello. “Would you let me take you someplace nice?”
Xie Lian looks out at the darkening bay. He thinks of the view from his office window, the wall of an adjoining brick building. He could go back there, write and read until the early morning hours. Perhaps he would sleep on the cot he’s laid out in there. Staring at the mottled ceiling, contemplating eternity.
Or he could go with Hua Cheng, who is holding out his hand, looking hopeful.
Xie Lian takes it.
They drive for another 10 minutes along the coast, then take an exit into an area filled with green fields. Huge houses dot the landscape -- this is the domain of the super-rich, Xie Lian thinks, because these fields aren’t used for farming. They’re simply green as far as the eye can see, well-manicured, sometimes interrupted by copses of grand old trees with outstretched branches. Some of the houses are surrounded by lush flower gardens. It’s not an area Xie Lian’s ever been too, nor does it seem like the kind of place he would want to live. But it’s fascinating just to see it for the first time.
Hua Cheng pulls down a narrow road, then turns onto another. Xie Lian squints as he makes out something odd on the horizon. Whatever it is, it’s silver, and a cluster of buildings sit low and flat around it. When wide concrete paths start to interrupt the endless greenery, he realizes what he’s looking at.
“I thought,” he says gingerly, “when you said someplace nice, you meant a fancy restaurant.”
“We can go to a restaurant,” Hua Cheng answers airily. He pulls the car into the yard, and they park. Holding Xie Lian’s fingers loosely, he leads him along the paths toward the airfield. The private jet sits on the runway like a horse at the gate, already humming. A movable staircase leads up to the main entrance. A number of people are working around it. One of them sees the pair approaching and offers Hua Cheng a bow.
“How soon can we be ready?” Hua Cheng asks him.
“Twenty minutes,” the man says. “We’ve been prepping since we got your text.”
Xie Lian wonders when Hua Cheng had managed to text them. “This is your plane?” A silly question; Hua Cheng nods easily, as though everyone has a private airfield with a jet ready to go at any moment. “Where are you taking me?”
Hua Cheng meets his gaze with a smile. “Where would you like to go? Tokyo? Hong Kong? Thailand is stunning this time of year.”
“San Lang,” Xie Lian starts, his heart pounding. Hua Cheng smiles that much more widely at the sound of the name. “Isn’t this a little…”
“Much?” Hua Cheng finishes for him. “Not at all. Not for gege.” He lays a hand on the small of Xie Lian’s back -- Xie Lian gasps at the touch -- and ushers him forward until they are both standing at the bottom of that staircase, the airplane’s door a wide unblinking eye at the top. Hua Cheng bows and makes a gesture with his hand toward the staircase -- after you.
Xie Lian’s brain rockets into high gear. He has brought nothing with him but his briefcase, and even that is still in the car. No one knows where he is or where he’s going. He’s traveled a little in life -- nothing too far from home -- but this would be a trip like no other, totally unplanned and utterly irresponsible. Every ounce of common sense in his brain is urging him to shake his head politely and back away.
But this man. This fascinating man, who is offering him the world. For every voice inside Xie Lian that says no, there’s a current of pulsing blood in his veins whispering yes, yes.
“I’m not sure,” he begins, tentatively.
“Gege,” Hua Cheng murmurs, “You speak of self as containing an infinity of possibilities for every moment of life. But the paradox of infinity is that some infinities are larger than others. At this moment, you have more possibilities than ever before. Given those infinite possibilities, at this moment, what will you choose?”
He’s right. The possibilities facing him right now are truly endless. And hidden in Hua Cheng’s words, there is a challenge -- do you dare? And Xie Lian finds, to his surprise, that he does. He not only dares, he wants. To see this through, to learn more about this man, to take a crazy chance. His heart is pounding with the force of his desire. And once, just once in his studious, conservative life, he listens to it.
He smiles at Hua Cheng, lifts one hand to the railing of the staircase, and begins to ascend.

In hindsight, a trip with your best friend sounded like a more than sound idea. The two of you had combined what limited knowledge you had about general adulting, scrounged up most that you could considering your financial situations as two college kids, and, in essence, had made things worked.
Or at the very least, you think, eyes scanning the room, taking in the general gist of the next addition to your mountain of already existing issues, made things happen.
And to answer a question; yes, there is a significant difference between work and happen.
Mark sighs wearily. It’s most likely due to the ridiculously lengthy car ride the two of you had been subjected to just to get here (and the back-and-forth bickering over whose bright idea it was to decide to go on holiday when the travelling industry is at its peak—it had been Mark’s, by the way, something about promotions and discount prices) and the even more absurd hike—or as the cheery staff liked to call it—expedition to your room.
“I can’t believe you convinced me to take a trip to the middle of nowhere, Mark.”
“Excuse me, this is not ‘the middle of nowhere’. According to the website, this is a ‘refined establishment which offers a fresh look into life alongside Mother Nature’,” defends Mark, letting the duffel bag stuffed with clothing he has slung over his shoulder slip to the ground with not an ounce of care.
“Well, that’s marketing for you.” You roll your eyes. “Just admit, you screwed up.”
Mark scoffs, unwilling to admit his defeat. “Not my fault that you’re a city girl.”
“This has nothing to do with me being a ‘city girl’. And you say that like you’re not a city boy.” Mark is tempted to say something petty in response but bites back his words. “And we have a bigger problem at hand right now, Mark.”
“I wouldn’t say it’s a big problem…”
“Dude,” you deadpan. “It’s a big problem. There’s only one bed.”
Mark clicks his tongue. “We can come up with something… I, uh, I could sleep on the floor?”
“In this weather? You’ll be dead of hypothermia by morning. So, no.”
“Christ, alright then I guess we’ll just have to sleep on the same bed,” says Mark casually, falling onto the linen sheets. The bed creaks under his weight.
You shoot him an incredulous look. “Together? On the same bed?”
“Yeah, why not? We’ve done it before when we were kids.” Mark stares blankly up at the ceiling. “What’s so different about back then to now?”
You laugh wryly. “What’s different? We did it when we were kids, Mark. Kids.” Your face warms as you give Mark a once-over, taking it how much he’s grown into his good looks over the years. “I can list off plenty of things that have changed since we were literal children.”
Mark flips onto his side to face you head-on, an elbow propping him up. “Why? What’s wrong? You got a crush on me now?”
You roll your eyes, but your cheeks pool with even more blistering heat. “Ugh, as if.”
“Damn, alright then, Cher Horowitz,” jeers Mark.
You stick your tongue out at Mark. “Whatever. Pass me a pillow. I’ll take the floor.”
Mark jolts upright like a meerkat on the lookout. “What? No, you take the bed. I’ll take the floor.”
“No, I’m good. You can have the bed to yourself. I don’t mind, honestly.” You jerk your thumb towards yourself, pushing your chest out proudly. “This ‘city girl’ can handle a little bit of cold.”
There’s the muffled rustling of sheets and the padding of feet against the floor before a pair of arms coil themselves around your waist from behind you, which by the way, doesn’t help your cheeks which only grow hotter by the second. You turn to face Mark who stares at you with nothing but genuine concern.
“No way. This ‘city girl’ is taking the bed.” His arms curl tighter around you, pulling you even closer to him. “Come on. I’ll sleep on the floor.”
“No, Mark it’s—”
Your refusal is cut short when you feel your body grow weightless as your feet are lifted off of the ground.
“Oh my God! Holy shit, Mark.” Like a hapless ragdoll, you’re almost effortlessly thrown over Mark’s shoulder. You’d be impressed by how surprisingly strong he is given his skinny-looking exterior, but you find that this isn’t quite the right time to be complimenting his physical abilities just yet. Mark grunts when you writhe in his hold. “Put me down!”
“With pleasure.”
You yelp, startled when Mark nonchalantly drops you onto the bed, following suit not too long after, his face inches from yours. His arms cage in your face and you feel your head grow dizzy, intoxicated by his scent. Your heart lurches when the bed groans with all the brute force being heaved onto it.
Mark grins cheekily at you, an airy laugh leaving his lips. “Jesus, you should’ve seen your face! It was priceless.”
You stare up at him, subconsciously drinking in his beautiful features; from the hairs of his eyebrows to the flutter of his eyelashes to the rosy apples of his cheeks and right down to the dip of his cupid’s bow, you gawk at him in silence for a moment or two. You realise that it’s actually been a moment or two too long since you’ve said something by the way Mark’s smile falters and his eyes begin to roam your face with just as much intrigue.
You clear your throat, averting his keen gaze. “Yeah, alright. Haha, very funny, Mark.”
For once, Mark doesn’t have any witty comeback for you in response. In fact, the room is drop dead silent save for the mechanical whirring of the ceiling fan. Mark’s adam’s apple bobs up and down in apprehension as his eyes scan your face once more. You can’t look away from him. Your eyes are glued to his as your heart hammers in your chest, its vibrations ringing in your ears.
He makes a move to get off of you but freezes when he feels your hand wrap around his bicep, urging for him to stay as he is. Mark watches you with interest, waiting for something more, but all you can do is continue gaping at him. You pull your bottom lip between your teeth, blinking up at him. You wait with baited breath as Mark licks his lips.
“What?” he whispers. “What is it you want from me?”
You inhale sharply.
Mark’s voice drops several octaves, turning almost gravelly, which is so out of character for him you nearly blanch. “Come on, I want to know. Tell me what you want me to do to you.”
You mumble your words incoherently, your mind too clouded over to formulate an actual sentence.
“Speak up, pretty girl. I can’t hear you.” Mark leans into your ear, his hot breath making your hairs stand on end.
“Want you to kiss me, Mark.”
“God, you’re so cute. Stop being so cute. Say it again.”
You huff, growing impatient. “Please, Mark. Just kiss me already.”
“Holy shit.” He tucks a strand of your hair behind your ear. “That's really hot.”
Mark kisses you tenderly. His lips press softly against yours, testing the waters and gauging your reaction. He tastes of the spearmint gum you gave him on the ride here and he smells like the fabric softener you always use when you go over to his place.
His hand cups your cheek, and at your hum of appreciation, he finally decides to kiss you with a little more fervour.
You’re not sure how, but you soon find yourself in Mark’s lap as he rests his back against the headboard. You chase after his lips when he pulls away and he giggles, the sound so bizarre considering the atmosphere. You don’t stay displeased for too long though, as Mark begins kissing down your jaw, which tickles, if you're being frank.
Mark’s grip on you turns bruising when you scratch at his nape, savouring the way his breath hitches. As things progress, you can’t help but wonder how this exactly happened. Sure, you’ve had those moments where the idea of being more than friends with Mark excited you, but it’s not like you dwelled on the thought often. All throughout your friendship, you’d never had any moments like this, but you’re surprised you two hadn’t done this sooner, because God, this feels amazing. Thinking back on it, there have been moments where you’d caught Mark staring a little too intensely at you and vice-versa, but you brushed it off as a common occurrence, being friends with a guy. But, you suppose, given the fact that you and Mark are making out right now, probably means that those stares meant a little more than you had first surmised.
You pull away when Mark grips the back of your neck. He pauses, his gaze finding yours.
He swallows dryly. “You okay?"
You exhale shakily, a whirlwind of thoughts consuming you. “Wait- I- Can we,” you take a breath, “can we stop?”
Immediately, Mark’s expression melts into one of distress. “Yeah, of course we can.”
“Thanks.” You nod timidly, climbing off his lap and sinking into the spot beside him. You chew on the flesh of your inner cheek, guilt washing over you. “I- I’m sorry.”
Mark’s head swivels to face you. “What? No, don’t be sorry. It’s fine.” He fiddles with his fingers. “Are you okay? Did I do something wrong? I didn’t hurt you did I?”
“What? No, no, you didn’t.” You laugh reassuringly. “I just- I don’t know- I just—”
“No, it’s okay. If you want to stop, I'll stop. No explanation required.” Mark smiles at you. “But… we’re still cool, right?”
“Of course we are, dude.”
Mark snickers. “Wow, I can’t believe you just called me dude after we made out. You’re really something else, huh?”
“Hey! You should take that as a compliment.” You shove him playfully. “I don’t call just anyone dude.”
“Well then, it’s an honour. Dude.”
Your conversation dwindles into silence. You feel anxiety begin to make its way up your spine as it latches onto you, sinking its gnarly teeth into your back. What now? Can you two really go back to being just friends if that’s what you ultimately decided? The faint spinning of the fan is the only thing that nulls your worries. Cautiously, you reach for Mark’s hand beside you and thankfully, he reciprocates the gesture. You sigh happily, finding solace in the warmth radiating from his fingertips.
“Can I—no I mean—can we cuddle?” You await a response from Mark, only to be greeted by nothing. “Uh, I’m sorry. That was dumb of me. Pretend I didn’t say anything.”
You attempt to pry your fingers from Mark’s but he refuses to let you slip away. Instead, he brings your hand to his lips, placing a chaste kiss on the back of your palm. “Hey, no. Let’s cuddle. I’m down for that. I need a hug, anyway.”
It’s astounding how easy it is to get into a spooning position with Mark. And as corny as it sounds, you feel like you fit perfectly in his arms, snug against his chest. You allow yourself to relax in his embrace until you feel something digging into your thigh.
“Is that—”
“Yeah, sorry,” says Mark sheepishly. He shifts in his position, but to no avail. He just hisses in discomfort. You smother a giggle. “I’m still, uh, a little… excited?”
“My bad.”
Mark pokes your waist, fishing that repressed giggle out of you. “Dumbass.”
And as you lay there with Mark, your laughter fading as the moon rises, you can’t deny the sparks of attraction that have ignited. You’re not quite sure exactly how you feel, but you think, whatever the outcome, the two of you will be alright.

i loved your mingjue/jiang cheng fic so much! if you're inspired, maybe something about the wedding or their siblings reacting?
sequel to this
--
In their defense, neither Nie Mingjue nor Jiang Cheng were especially good at being romantic – and anyway it wasn’t supposed to be a romantic arrangement in the first place.
It was an arranged marriage for political benefits. Unlike his parents, Jiang Cheng wouldn’t be so foolish as to get his heart involved when it came to one of those.
Sure, now that matters had been arranged and the contracts all signed, they were able to relax a little and spend time together as friends and future spouses rather than as mere allies, sitting together late into the night and speaking freely instead of making excuses to avoid saying the wrong time.
And yes, obviously Jiang Cheng was significantly more invested in showing Nie Mingjue around the Lotus Pier – around Yunmeng generally, even. After all, it wasn’t just politeness now - Nie Mingjue was going to be the second master here, just as Jiang Cheng would be second master at the Unclean Realm; that was what they’d agreed on, an equal balance that respected both of their commitments to their homes.
As for why Jiang Cheng made a point of taking Nie Mingjue’s hand into his when they walked around – well, that was just logic, too. Jiang Cheng didn’t especially enjoy the physical touch of strangers, which would be an impediment to marriage, but he was determined to make this arrangement between them work.
And for someone like him, who wasn’t naturally talented, that meant –
“Practice,” he said, putting his hand into Nie Mingjue’s.
“Practice,” he reminded him when they sat by the dock, until Nie Mingjue yielded and put his arm around him.
“Practice,” he said pointedly, raising his face for a good-night kiss.
“It’s nice to meet someone else who appreciates practice as being worthwhile in its own right,” Nie Mingjue remarked a little later, while they were waiting for Jiang Cheng to remember how to breathe. “My brother is always complaining that there’s no point to training day in and day out if you’re just doing the same things over and over again, but there’s no other way to build a strong foundation. Don’t you agree?”
Jiang Cheng nodded, pressing a palm to one of his cheeks, which were red for some reason. Probably the same reason his heart kept beating too fast – really, this was why he needed to practice. If he collapsed every time they engaged in the smallest bit of physical intimacy, this marriage would be called out as a sham immediately by anyone who saw them, and Jiang Cheng wasn’t willing to endure what his parents had.
Luckily, Nie Mingjue seemed to feel similarly on the subject, and raised no objections to Jiang Cheng’s proposed approach. Best of all, he didn’t do anything in the other direction, either: no silly romantic gestures Jiang Cheng would be required to match, no secret expectations that Jiang Cheng would inevitably disappointed.
No: when Nie Mingjue brought him gifts, they were practical ones, like a new sheath for Sandu or more ink when he was nearly out. Once he’d brought him an assortment of snacks typical to Qinghe, since they’d agreed that any visit by Jiang Cheng would have to wait until the Lotus Pier was a little more stable, but that was practical, too: it wouldn’t do for him to get sick from the local food once he arrived.
Nothing romantic.
Just like Jiang Cheng wasn’t romantic, either. Getting up earlier than usual to train alongside Nie Mingjue was just courtesy, and spending time together doing paperwork until he fell asleep on Nie Mingjue’s shoulder was just properly allocating the little free time they had.
Neither of them were romantic, and it was a relief.
Jiang Cheng had always lived in fear of having to try to sweet-talk someone, but luckily Nie Mingjue found the poisonous lash of his tongue far more amusing – anything even remotely resembling an endearment made Nie Mingjue look lost and awkward, which was about the same for Jiang Cheng.
It made it much easier.
It did also, Jiang Cheng later admitted, make it a lot easier to miss.
-
“Do you two ever talk about anything other than reconstruction?” Nie Huaisang moaned, his head under his hands. Jiang Cheng had come for his first visit to Qinghe, a short weekend jaunt when his existing plans had been unexpectedly cancelled and the Lotus Pier progressing nicely even without constant supervision. “This is the most boring dinner I’ve ever attended. Ever!”
“We talk about cultivation, too,” Nie Mingjue pointed out – quite justly, in Jiang Cheng’s mind.
“That’s not better, da-ge!”
“I like talking about cultivation,” Jiang Cheng offered. “And reconstruction.”
Nie Huaisang gave him a look that suggested he’d betrayed their ancient friendship (which Jiang Cheng wasn’t sure several months of suffering Wei Wuxian’s presence next to each other qualified as, but whatever). “Have you ever talked about anything else?”
“…the war?”
“Hopeless,” Nie Huaisang declared.
Jiang Cheng rolled his eyes over his head at Nie Mingjue, who just looked amused. “I’m going to sleep; I just flew the whole way here,” he said. “And don’t forget that you promised you’d show me around in the morning, Sect Leader Nie.”
“Of course, Sect Leader Jiang. You can meet me by the western training grounds when you wake up; we can leave once we’ve finished morning exercise.”
Jiang Cheng nodded, the plan sounding good to him. He stood up and tapped Nie Mingjue on the arm pointedly in warning – they’d agreed on a signal that indicated when a gesture for physical affection was welcome, since both of them were war veterans with a tendency to spook at unexpected gestures that came too close – before leaning down to claim his good-night kiss before heading out.
“You can show me your fans tomorrow as well, Huaisang –”
“Stop right there!” Nie Huaisang shrieked. “What was that?!”
Jiang Cheng blinked at him. “A…blatantly dismissive offer to let you torture me with your stupid fans for a shichen or so even though I clearly don’t want to?”
Nie Mingjue snorted. He really did find Jiang Cheng funny, and Jiang Cheng still found that bizarre.
“Not that! The kissing! You kissed my da-ge!”
“Well, yes,” Jiang Cheng said. “We’re getting married. It’s important to set up habits early to –”
He was about to explain the idea of practice, but Nie Huaisang seemed disinterested in that, jumping up from his seat and waving his hands around about why he hadn’t been informed yet.
In fairness, Jiang Cheng highly doubted Nie Huaisang understood the idea of practice in any form, so it was probably just wasting his breath.
“Stop fussing,” Nie Mingjue said. “I’m going to let you help plan the wedding.”
“That isn’t the point! You should have told me!”
“Am I required for this conversation?” Jiang Cheng asked.
“No, he’s just making a fuss.”
“I am not. And, no, Jiang-xiong, but thanks for offering – I’ll have words for you in the morning, probably. I can’t think of any right now.”
“Words?”
“Threatening words of some variety,” Nie Huaisang explained.
Jiang Cheng thought that was fair enough, given that he was marrying Nie Huaisang’s beloved brother. “Tomorrow, then. Good night, Huaisang, Sect Leader Nie.”
“Why do you still call each other by your titles?” he heard Nie Huaisang complaining as he left. “You’re going to get married…!”
Because we’ve only just become engaged and change is hard, obviously, Jiang Cheng thought, rolling his eyes.
Nie Huaisang really just didn’t understand things sometimes.
-
Jiang Yanli made a point of visiting the Lotus Pier on a regular basis, her doting new husband in tow, and Jiang Cheng was there to greet her every time.
This time was no different, and he showed her around the most newly rebuilt areas before bringing her back for lunch.
“When are you two going to give me happy news?” he said, aiming for teasing but mostly coming off grumpy. “You’re already married – there’s no reason to wait to have children.”
“Give it time, A-Cheng,” Jiang Yanli laughed while Jin Zixuan rolled his eyes but generally looked too happy to protest. “What about you, though? What’s your happy news?”
Jiang Cheng blinked at her, running through their conversation so far in his mind. He’d updated her on all the important things: the new pier district, the housing for war veterans, the new orphanage…he’d even mentioned the new dam they were constructing.
Had he omitted something?
“Your neck,” Jin Zixuan said.
That didn’t exactly clarify anything, and Jiang Cheng looked at him, utterly bewildered.
Jin Zixuan covered his eyes. “You have a mark on your neck,” he said. “It doesn’t look like an insect.”
Jiang Cheng got up to go look in the mirror, and sure enough, he did. It would have been covered by his collar, but it was a hot day and he’d been sweating, so the collar had dipped down just enough to show.
“Oh, that,” he said, making a mental note to tell Nie Mingjue to aim a little lower next time.
Jiang Yanli laughed, but Jin Zixuan’s expression looked a little more serious, and a moment later he asked Jiang Yanli if she happened to have any of that particular delicacy he’d enjoyed last time. She did, and she excused herself from the room to go get it.
Jin Zixuan turned the serious expression onto Jiang Cheng. “If it’s not anything serious, tell Yanli now. She’s convinced that you’re marrying whoever it is that left the mark on your neck, and I don’t want her to be disappointed.”
“Of course I’m marrying them,” Jiang Cheng said. “Who in the world would I allow that close to my neck if I wasn’t planning to –”
That was about when he remembered Jin Zixuan’s father and broke out into awkward coughing as he frantically searched for a subject change. “While you’re waiting for jiejie, why don’t you try some of these pastries?” he tried. “They were brought over from Qinghe.”
Despite the obviousness of Jiang Cheng’s conversational dodge, Jin Zixuan’s expression eased significantly and he looked happy again. “No, that’s fine. That’s good! What’s her name?”
“Sect Leader Nie,” Jiang Cheng said.
“No, not the one who brought you the pastries – the person you’re marrying.”
“Sect Leader Nie.”
“No, I meant –”
“I’m answering your question.”
“…oh.”
Jiang Yanli came back shortly with the little delicacy and looked surprised at how Jin Zixuan looked as if he’d been punched several times in the face – without any swelling, though, so it hadn’t actually happened. “What’s the matter?”
“He’s being weird over the fact that I’m marrying Sect Leader Nie,” Jiang Cheng said with a scowl. “I don’t know why.”
“Sect Leader Nie?” Jiang Yanli said, putting down the tray. “Oh, he seemed very nice. Do you like him?”
“I think we’re well matched?” he said, a little hesitantly. Like was such a strong word, after all. “He’s refreshingly low-key.”
Jin Zixuan muttered something incoherent under his breath, possibly something about Baxia not being low-key in the slightest, but Jiang Cheng ignored him.
“I’m sure he’ll make you very happy,” Jiang Yanli said, with a slight touch of their mother’s steeliness in her eyes suggested that he’d better. “Have you started planning the wedding yet?”
“No, not yet. We’ve drafted the contract, but we’re taking a little bit of time to make sure we’re compatible before proceeding with the details.”
“Good idea,” she said, and the memories in her eyes were the same as his – they both loved their parents dearly, but that was not a marriage experience either of them wished to repeat. “Well, let us know when you make the official announcement and we’ll toast to you.”
“I won’t tell my father ahead of time,” Jin Zixuan put in suddenly. “I promise.”
“…thanks,” Jiang Cheng said, not entirely sure what the point of the offer was – Jin Guangshan would find out eventually, one way or another – but aware that Jin Zixuan was trying to do something nice. “I appreciate it. Jiejie, would you like to try some Qinghe delicacies? Sect Leader Nie left them behind when he left.”
“I most certainly would.”
-
There were various phrases Jiang Cheng could live his entire life without hearing, and The Yiling Patriarch just attacked the Nie sect delegation was probably one of the top ones.
He ran over at once.
Luckily, Wei Wuxian was not, in fact, attacking the Nie sect; he was mostly just yelling at Nie Mingjue, who hadn’t even drawn Baxia and mostly looked (if you knew him well enough to read the gradation of scowl on his face) as if he was trying very hard not to laugh. That was probably why Lan Xichen, who was standing nearby with his stone-faced brother at his side, didn’t seem inclined to interfere, though he mostly looked confused.
“What’s going on here?” Jiang Cheng snapped, striding up to them. “Wei Wuxian..!” No, Wei Wuxian’s explanation wouldn’t make any sense. “Sect Leader Nie, Sect Leader Lan…?”
“I’m taking advantage,” Nie Mingjue said. “Apparently.”
“Of what?”
“As far as I could determine from the shouting, the answer would be – you, Sect Leader Jiang,” Lan Xichen said.
Jiang Cheng stared. “Of – me?” He looked at Wei Wuxian. “What? How? For what?”
Normally he’d dismiss such a charge out of hand, but for all his recklessness, he could usually trust that Wei Wuxian usually had his best interests in mind…but on the other hand, Jiang Cheng really couldn’t imagine Nie Mingjue doing anything underhanded like that.
Besides, if he wanted something from Jiang Cheng, he could just ask.
Wei Wuxian crossed his arms, still glaring at Nie Mingjue. “He knows what he did.”
“Good for him, but that’s not really helpful to me, is it?” Jiang Cheng said, throwing his hands up. “It doesn’t exactly seem like Sect Leader Nie to be cheating me; I’d appreciate some facts.”
“Oh, I’m not cheating you,” Nie Mingjue said, and he was distinctly cheerful now. “I’m taking advantage of you.”
Jiang Cheng’s brow barely had time to wrinkle in irritation and confusion before Nie Mingjue added, “Sexually.”
Jiang Cheng had never had his emotions shift from irritation and rage into sheer hideous embarrassment so quickly before. “Wei Wuxian!” he howled. “That had better not be it!”
“He went into your tent last night!” Wei Wuxian argued. “You were already asleep at your desk, and he kissed you –”
That sounded a lot more like Nie Mingjue than the idea that the man was somehow cheating him. After all, Jiang Cheng had arranged for him to visit that evening, only to fall asleep before he arrived – it was only reasonable that Nie Mingjue keep up to their agreed schedule of good night kisses…
Huh, Jiang Cheng’s cheeks were red again.
“It’s fine,” he said. “I don’t – it’s fine. I don’t mind.”
“What do you mean you don’t mind? You can’t go around giving your first kiss to whoever wants to take it –”
“First off, that’s a bit hypocritical from the man who’d come back singing the praises of his ‘secret admirer’ in the forest after the Phoenix Mountain hunt,” Jiang Cheng said, because he was petty and because it made Wei Wuxian splutter (and Lan Wangji twitch for some reason – probably disapproval). “Secondly, what makes you think that was my first kiss?! Because it wasn’t!”
“Oh yeah? Who was your first kiss with, then?”
“…also Nie Mingjue, as it happens,” Jiang Cheng allowed. “But that’s because we’re getting married! He’s allowed to kiss me!”
“He’s not allowed to – wait. Married?! Since when?!”
“That is a very good question,” Lan Xichen interjected, looking thunderstruck. “Da-ge, you’re getting married?”
“Yes,” Nie Mingjue said. “We haven’t worked out any of the logistics of the ceremony yet because Huaisang can’t make up his mind about which method to use to pick an auspicious date, so I didn’t bother telling anyone.”
Jiang Cheng thought that that sounded perfectly reasonable – no point in claiming time on people’s calendars before they’d even selected the date – but Wei Wuxian seemed to be even more offended.
“Why didn’t you tell him? Aren’t you proud of getting married? Don’t you want the whole world to know?” he demanded.
“Weren’t you against this just a moment ago?” Jiang Cheng asked. “And he just said why. It’s not like I’ve been going around telling people, either.”
Now Wei Wuxian was glaring at him. “Does shijie know, at least?”
“Of course she knows –” Since that incident last week. “– and she’s fine with it.”
“...oh. She is?” Wei Wuxian abruptly deflated. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I was going to,” Jiang Cheng said, exasperated. “But we didn’t pick a date yet. It’s not like I thought you would have trouble clearing your schedule to attend, what with your – your – your corpses and your radishes and all that.”
“Corpses and radishes,” Nie Mingjue echoed. “Fascinating.”
“You know, I haven’t been to Yiling in years,” Lan Xichen said thoughtfully. “That would seem to be appropriately neutral ground for an announcement of this magnitude, don’t you think?”
Jiang Cheng hadn’t even thought of that, but that would be perfect – everyone would have no choice but to come peacefully, and he’d be able to have his shixiong (however technically distanced) present. And, even better, he would be socially obligated to invite the person who hosted the announcement of his wedding to the wedding itself, no matter what his reputation was.
He turned to look at Wei Wuxian, who was gaping. “You want me to host…I wasn’t even officially invited to this gathering! I had to crash it!”
“And next time you won’t,” Nie Mingjue said. “It’s settled, then. You should probably go get ready.”
Jiang Cheng thought to himself that he’d never seen Wei Wuxian look so surprised – by anything, ever. He wasn’t sure it was possible for him to look any more surprised than he currently did.
Pleased with himself, and with Nie Mingjue, he leaned over and kissed his soon-to-be spouse.
Oh, huh.
Apparently it was possible.

YO I JUST GOT INTO THE BRAWLSTARS FANDOM!! If you're looking for tk requests
Then how about a tickle fanfic with Colt and Shelly having a Tickle Fight (Could be a ship fic or not its up to you!)
(Ack! Sorry it’s taken me so long to get to these requests!! When I opened them I had motivation but when they started coming in I lost it, but now I’m finally (and slowly) starting to get to them!!)
(Also ngl it actually took me a while to think of how this specific scenario would play out)
(Also, I don’t know spanish, so I had to used a random english-to-spanish translator so if some of the things Shelly says doesn’t make any sense to you spanish speakers, I’m so sorry lol)
***
Shelly was unpacking some of the boxes in her room. She’d moved in a few weeks ago but never fully unpacked some of the boxes she’d brought over. She had moved in with her “friend”, Colt, because she’d been running low on money and it had been getting harder to pay the bills, Colt had offered to let her move into a spare room, she’d only planned to stay for a little while to get her situation figured out but Colt kept insisting she stay.
She’d been on the fence about staying with Colt, on one hand it was super easy to deal with bills if they both pitched in and would split their money to pay for them, on the other hand... Well, she was living with Colt. As much as Shelly liked Colt, the sheriff was... full of himself, and that was putting it lightly.
Don’t get her wrong, Shelly liked Colt, he was friendly and nice, he was a good shot as well and every now and then he says something that’s actually funny, but he also was cocky and obsessed with his appearance. This normally wouldn’t annoy Shelly that much if these things just happened every once in a while, but Colt constantly spent hours in the morning getting ready and would get sassy and snap at her when she pointed this out to him.
She’d been mulling over her options when she heard a knock at her door, “Yeah?” Shelly asked and Colt peaked his head in “Speak of the Devil and he shall appear...” Shelly thought sarcastically and Colt smiled nervously “Hey... Was just checking in on you, you’ve been in here for a while and was getting a little worried.” Colt said.
“Worried? Why would you worry?” Shelly questioned, “Well, you’ve been in here all day and I haven’t seen you that much!” Colt said and allowed himself into the room, Shelly looked out the window and saw that the sun had began to dip below the horizon, shoot, had she really been in here all day unpacking?! She looked down and saw that she’d only gotten through a 2 and half boxes of her unpacked items and frowned, she hadn’t even been unpacking she’d been lost in thought the whole day...
“I’m fine Colt, just been thinking about things...” Shelly finally respond, “Thinking about what?” Colt asked and Shelly sighed before rubbing the back of her neck “About... Your offer to stay here..” she said before then pinching the bridge of her nose “I just... It’s been...” she stammered, why was it so hard to just explain to him the situation?! Shelly growled before looking at Colt, he just stood there with this deadpanned expression that held some slight concern to it.
“I’ll... I’ll tell you later, are you cooking tonight or are we getting takeout again?” Shelly said before sighing again afterwards, Colt was silent for a moment before he responded “Oh! Uh, I can cook for us! How would uh, spaghetti sound?” Colt said and flushed slightly “Sounds good, don’t burn it this time.” Shelly said and closed up the box next to her, she’d deal with that later. “It was one time Shell!” Colt said as he exited the room.
+*+*+*+
Shelly was sitting in front of her mirror brushing out her ponytail, she never liked having her hair down, not even when she was getting ready for bed or going to sleep. Colt had managed to not burn the pasta this time, but the meatballs he’d made with the spaghetti were a little hard to chew, “How did this man survive by himself?” Shelly thought to herself while rolling her eyes and smiling.
She set the brush down and yawned while stretching, she’d already changed into her pajamas and was about to flop on her bed when she heard a knock at her door again “Yeah?” she asked. Colt poked his head in once more and smiled slightly “Hey uh, mind if I come in?” he asked “Sure, just be quick I’m tired...” Shelly said and flopped onto her back on the bed and looked at Colt.
Colt walked in, he was also wearing his pajamas and approached the bed “You said that you’d been thinking about my offer to stay?” he questioned and Shelly huffed through her nose and sat up “Yeah... I’d been thinking about it...” she said and Colt sat down on the bed as well, “I, haven’t decided fully if I’ll stay-stay, but I might stay for a bit longer...” Shelly said and Colt leaned in a little closer.
“Why not stay? I mean, I know your a little reserved and like your privacy, but isn’t it easier to share a house with someone?” asked Colt and Shelly felt her cheeks heat up a little “I mean yeah, it’s easier and yeah, I like my privacy... But, well...” Shelly said and looked away “Well?” Colt asked and shifted a little closer to her, “Well, I-” Shelly looked up at Colt and noticed how close he was to her, she flushed a deep red before quickly putting her hands to his sides and pushed him away.
** Colt let out this startled, squeal and giggled(?) as he was pushed back. Shelly, who was still flustered was now slightly confused, why did he giggle? Colt looked up at her as his face flushed as well. There was a moment of silence between them, before Shelly reached out and squeezed his side again.
“ACK! Shehehelly no!” Colt giggled and quickly swatted her hand away. Shelly for a split second sat there dumbfounded, before an evil look crossed her face, “S-Shelly...?” Colt said trying to crawl away, Shelly grabbed Colt by the legs and pulled him back over to her and she moved up so she was now looming over the sheriff “Colt... You never mentioned that you were ticklish!” she said and sat on top of the gunslinger’s thighs “WHAT?! Pfffft! I’m not ticklish!” Colt quickly said nervously pushing at her.
“Oh? Well then, if you’re not ticklish you wouldn’t mind if I did this would you?” Shelly said and began to quickly scribble her fingers into Colt’s sides. Colt made this half strangled noise as a peal of laughter tore out of him “WAHAHAIT! Shehehehelly nohohoho!!” Colt laughed as he quickly grabbed hold of Shelly wrist and tried to pry them off “What? I thought you said you weren’t ticklish?” Shelly said and started to squeeze all over his sides.
“Shehehehelly! NOHOHO! Stohohohop!!” Colt laughed and started to squirm violently underneath Shelly “Pfft! Stop? No way, I just started!” Shelly said and started to move her way up to his ribs. Colt made weird noise as her hands started to travel upwards, he started to kick his legs and shake his head “NOHOHO!! HAHAHA SHEHEHELLY DOHOHON’T!!” Colt cried out “Why not? This a bad spot?” Shelly teased as her fingers scratched at his lower ribs.
Colt let out a shriek as his ribs were being tickled, they were pretty bad. He tried pushing and slapping her hands away, but Shelly had surprisingly strong hands. He panicked for a moment before he quickly placed his hands at her sides to try and push her away. Shelly arched her back “AYE!!” she squawked and for a second she stopped her assault.
It didn’t take long for Colt to realize what he’d done “Nohoho way! You’re ticklish too?!” Colt said while giggling and Shelly flushed again “Not nearly as you!” Shelly said quickly squeezing his ribs, Colt gasped and squealed before rapidly squeezing Shelly’s sides. Shelly gasped and quickly shut her mouth and tensed up, she tried to focus on tickling Colt, but his hands were just as quick as hers, and he kept squeezing up and down her sides.
Shelly lasted a whole 20 seconds before she bursted out into belly laughter “COHOHOHOLT!!” she bellowed, but she kept up her attack at his ribs “IHIHIHI CAHAHAN’T BEHEHEHELIEVE YOHOHOU’RE THIHIS TIHIHIHICKLIHIHISH!!” Colt laughed as he started to spider quickly up and down her sides “YOHOHOHOU’RE OHOHONE TOHO TAHAHAHALK!!” Shelly laughed as she started to scratch between his ribs.
Colt using what little strength he had left pushed as hard as he could against Shelly’s middle and managed to knock her back. Filled with adrenaline he quickly turned the tabled and now loomed over Shelly, “Yohohou’ll pahahay fohor thahat...!” Colt said wiggling his fingers over Shelly’s middle. For a second Colt could see regret flash in her eyes before it was replaced with uncertainty and anger “Dohohon’t yohou dare!” Shelly said but a nervous and shy smile was already on her face “I would dare..” Colt said and plunged his fingers back to her sides.
Shelly once again arched her back and howled before she tried to fight Colt off. Colt pushed against her, keeping her pinned as he spidered all over her sides and occasionally her toned stomach as well, “COHOHOHOLT!! LO JURO POR DIOS, ¡BASTA!” Shelly howled as she shook her head “Sorry Shells, I don’t speak spanish! Could you repeat that?~” Colt teased as he tried her ribs, she apparently wasn’t as ticklish there as her laughter calmed just enough- “¡IDIOTA, HE DICHO QUE PARES!” Shelly said, she was still laughing enough to where it was a little hard to understand her.
“Pfft, who are you calling an “Idiota”? You’re the one who started this!” Colt chuckled, he may not know much spanish but he was able to pick that work out loud and clear! Shelly thrashed underneath Colt and squeezed his sides again “Nohoho! Shehehelly!!” he chortled “¡VAS A PAGAR POR ESTO!“ Shelly said and started after the gunslinger again.
+*+*+*+
After a few minutes of back and forth tickling and many things being said to each other, both in english and in spanish the two finally stopped. They both layed there on the bed gasping and panting, and giggling like madmen. Colt was laying on his back while Shelly was on her stomach, the sheets on the bed we half off and one of the pillows was on the floor.
Colt looked over at Shelly, “Whahat wehehere yohou trying toho sahahay before..?” he said through some stray giggled, Shelly was silent for a moment, “No lo tiene-” she stopped herself “It doesn’t matter, besides, I’m too tired to remember...” Shelly said dropping her head back down onto the bed.
Colt rolled his eyes before getting up off the bed and walked to the other side of the room, turned the light off before walking back over to the bed and flopped back down onto it “Hey! You have your own room and bed!” Shelly said and pushed his side, Colt giggled as he picked the stray pillow off of the ground and placed it under his head, “Sorry Shells, can’t hear you over the sound of me sleeping...” Colt said and quickly fell asleep. Shelly huffed and turned on her side away from Colt.
... She thought she might stay a little longer with Colt.
***
(Here, have this monstrously long fic, also once again sorry to anyone who speaks spanish, I don’t know it ^^’)

You're sitting on the couch when your fiancé walks into your shared house. You're watching the new season of Cobra Kai on Netflix when he walks into the living room. He puts his title on a little table by the doorway and you pause the TV.
"Hi," you say, watching him walk over to you on the couch. He hugs you from behind, wrapping his arms around your shoulders. "How was work?"
Finn says, "Exhausting, as per usual. I got my arse beat by Kyle O'Reilly, Adam Cole, and Roderick Strong in the ring for a promo."
He kisses your temple and you ask, "Is there something I can do to make it better?"
You turn your head and look up at Finn. He says, "I was thinking about going for a little swim to make sure my muscles don't tighten up. It's a warm night so maybe ya could come with me?" The last part was more of a question.
"This isn't a plot to get me into a bathing suit, is it?" you tease.
Your fiancé laughs and says, "As much as I love the sight of that, no. I do want to keep my muscles loose. Will ya join me?"
Nodding, you say, "Of course I will. I won't pass up the opportunity to see you in swim trunks, but I have ten minutes left in this episode so I'll join you after it's over."
Finn smiles and kisses your cheek. "See ya in the water," he says before letting you go. You hear his footsteps go up the stairs and you resume your episode of Cobra Kai.
You're curled up on the couch as you finish up the episode. When there are five minutes left, you hear Finn walk back downstairs and the back door opens. You glance back into the foyer to see Finn closes the sliding glass door. He's in a pair of black swim trunks and no shirt. Your thoughts immediately start to go to the dirtier side as you turn your attention back to the TV show that's on your screen.
Once your episode is done, you turn off the TV and you walk up the stairs to your and Finn's shared bedroom. You grab a black bikini. The top has thin ties that tie behind your neck and behind your back. You fix the top so you're not falling out of the top. You pull on the bottoms, which tie at your waist. You tie your hair up into a messy bun on your head.
You peddle out of the room when you've changed into the bathing suit. You grab a beach towel out of a closet in the hallway on the second floor. You walk down the stairs, and you can faintly hear music coming from the backyard. You open the sliding door and step into the warm and humid air.
Finn's swimming laps in the pool and you smile at the sight. His workout music playlist is playing via a Bluetooth speaker that sits on a chair by the pool. You throw your towel on another chair before sitting on the side of the pool by the five-foot area. You kick your feet in the water, trying to get used to the cool water on your skin.
Your fiancé takes a break in the eight-foot area of the pool. He wipes the water out of his eyes and you get his attention. "Hey, stranger," you say, leaning back on your hands. Finn looks over at you and smiles.
"Look at ya," he says, slowly swimming over to you. "I like that suit."
Giggling, you say, "That's because it barely covers me, Finn."
He stands between your legs in the water, his hands on your thighs. They're cold from being in the cold water. You shiver slightly as Finn says, "Ya should just take it off since it barely covers ya."
You run your fingers through Finn's short wet hair and say, "You would like that, wouldn't you?"
Finn nods and smiles. "It's not a bad night for a nice skinny dip, Y/N," he says, starting to negotiate with you. "Live a little, baby."
His hands run up your thighs to the ties on your bottoms. "Finn," you giggle. "We have neighbors."
Your fiancé leaves light kisses on your thighs and gives you puppy eyes. "I'll take my pants off if ya take that off," he negotiates with you.
You gently nibble on your lip before you slide off the wall and into the water. You're up to your collarbone in the cool water as you stand between the wall and Finn. You stare up at your fiancé and say, "Baby, we have neighbors and they can look out their windows to see us."
"It's almost midnight, and the only light we have is the lights in the pool. All they'll see is two people in the pool," Finn says, making a good case. You blink at Finn.
After making a decision, you reach behind your neck. You pull the tie until it's untied. The top falls and Finn's eyes are on your exposed chest. You pull the fabric away and put it on the wall behind you. Finn pulls at the ties on your bottoms and pulls them off of you. The bottoms join your top on the wall behind you. Now you're naked in the pool in front of Finn.
Finn's eyes are on your body as you hook your fingers into the waistband of his swim trunks. "Time to get these off since you told me you'd take your pants off if I took off my bikini," you say, pulling the swim trunks off Finn.
He laughs and helps you get them off. He throws the trunks with your bathing suit. Now you're both naked in the pool. Finn takes your hands and says, "Come swim with me, love."
You giggle as he pulls you off the wall. You kick your feet so you can keep up with him. He brings you into the deeper end of the pool where you can't stand. You kick to stay above water and Finn has to do the same.
"This is nice," you say, trying to keep your eyes on Finn's face instead of glancing down into the water to see what you've been wanting to see since his trunks came off.
Finn smiles and says, "I told ya that it was a nice night for a skinny dip."
A smile forms on your lips and you say, "You just wanted to get me naked."
Your fiancé says, "No way." You give him the look. "Okay, fine. Maybe I wanted to just a teeny tiny bit. I have wanted to see ya like this for a while. I've been so busy with defending that title and keeping up with my training. It's been a little bit since I've seen ya naked."
You laugh and swim a little closer to Finn. "This is the longest we've ever gone with being naked and not touching each other, you know. I'm surprised we haven't yet considering we haven't done anything for a while," you say to him.
"Ya trying to tell me something, love?" Finn questions.
Smiling, you say, "Possibly. You come home from work and just go to sleep. Plus, we're already naked."
Finn smiles at you and says, "Now who's the one negotiating something."
You tease, "Fine, don't have sex with me. It's not like I actually wanted you to fuck me anyway." You stick your tongue out at him and begin to swim backward, away from Finn. His eyes are on you as a smile forms on your lips.
"Who said that I didn't want to have sex with ya?" Finn asks, swimming after you.
You climb out and say, "I just assumed." You wrap your towel around your nude body and Finn gets out of the pool.
He walks over to you, but just before he gets to you, he says, "Ya assumed wrong, love. Ya know how much I love to fuck ya." Then he cups your face and pulls your lips to his. The kiss is quick and intense from the start. Your hands are on his waist and you pull him closer to you. Finn's tongue finds its way into your mouth, a moan leaving your lips.
Finn walks over to one of the pool lounge chairs under the awning that's connected to the house. He lays back on it, breaking the kiss. You crawl onto his lap, straddling his thighs. Your lips attach to Finn's neck and soft sighs escape his lips as he pulls at the towel around your body.
As you leave marks on his neck and chest, Finn pulls off the towel you're wearing. It falls to the ground and you pull back from Finn. You look at your work and say, "I hope makeup can cover those up."
"Oh well if they can't," Finn says before he kisses you harshly.
All the pent up sexual energy between the two of you is coming out now. It's been months since any kind of intimacy between you and Finn. Since he won the title, it's been the only thing he's been focused on. Of course, he's always made sure you were taken care of and that you were okay, but he'd been training harder, working more hours, and traveling a little more so he's exhausted when he's home so he usually sleeps.
You don't know why he actually wanted to go for a swim on a random January day and have sex with you on a chair next to the pool. Honestly, you don't care why. You're just happy you have something other than your fingers to pleasure you.
Finn's hands are roaming your body and you sigh softly, having missed his touch. You grind slowly against his member. The tip runs through your folds and you bite back a moan in your throat. Your hands are on Finn's six thousand abs to keep yourself balanced.
"Love, ya keep doing that and we're gonna have a problem," Finn warns you.
Instead of stopping, you move faster. Moans pass your lips and Finn cups your face with his hands. You sigh, "I've missed you like this, Finn."
Your fiancé brings your face close to his and you meet his pretty blue eyes. You sigh softly as you roll your hips. Finn's lips brush against yours as he says, "Baby, please do something because ya are driving me crazy."
You lean in and kiss Finn as you take his hardened length in your hand. You pump him a few times as you position him outside your entrance. The kiss deepens as you sink onto his member. A moan leaves your lips as Finn begins to will you. Finn's hands slide into your hair, holding your face to his. Your hands are on his chest as you adjust to Finn inside you.
Finn's fingers curl in your Y/H/C locks as you begin to slowly move your hips. You drag your fingers down Finn's chest as you pull back from the passionate kiss to get some air. Your breathing is becoming more and more labored with every roll of your hips. Finn's eyes are on yours as you move.
He not-so-gently pulls your hair back and tilts your head up, exposing your neck to him. A soft moan leaves your lips when he does this. Finn smirks and begins to kiss your neck. "Did ya like that, baby?" Finn mumbles against the sensitive skin on your neck.
You gasp, "Kinda."
"I'll have to remember that," he says.
One of Finn's hands leaves your hair and you wonder where it went until you feel his thumb start to rub your clit. You gasp softly, moving your hips faster. Finn groans, "Just like that, mo ghrá. Ya feel so good around me."
Your body shakes with overstimulation as you move faster. The tip of Finn's member hits your g-spot as he finds the sweet spot on your neck. You cry out in pleasure, moaning Finn's name. A knot forms in your stomach as you're pulled closer and closer to an orgasm. Finn says, "Ya look so good on top of me, baby."
You look down at Finn and pant, "You should let me do this more often then."
Finn pulls you down to him and you kiss him as you move rougher. Your moans and the sound of slapping skin fills the warm night air.
"I'm about to cum, Finn," you moan against Finn's lips.
Your fiance says, "No one's stopping ya, love."
After a few more movements, your body jerks as you cum around Finn. You moan his name mixed with profanities as you ride out your high. Finn quickly pulls out of you and he cums on his stomach. You're panting a bit as you look down at Finn. He looks up at you.
You say, "Please start letting me top occasionally. It's fun."
Finn laughs and kisses you slowly, full of tongue. He says, "We'll see."
You giggle against his lips. A small makeout session is ignited from this kiss. Your hands roam his body and yours roam his.
After about ten minutes of this, Finn grabs a towel and cleans you both up before saying, "Let's head inside, yeah? It's getting kinda cold."
You don't object to going inside. You get up and quickly run inside. Finn's right behind you. The two of you retire to your bedroom, where you cuddle naked beneath the sheets.
Both of you lay intertwined with each other when you say, "I don't wanna go weeks without doing this again, Finn. I need to be close to you like this."
Finn looks down at you and says, "Regal is going to cut back my hours that I spend at the Performance Center so I can spend some extra time with ya before our wedding. We have two weeks before the wedding, and I'll be spending half the time at the Performance Center."
You smile and say, "Really?"
Your fiancé nods and says, "Really. It was also his idea, and I wasn't gonna object to spending more time with my beautiful fiancée."
Overwhelmed with excitement, you say, "I'm so happy." You happily kiss Finn and he smiles into the kiss. "I love you."
"I love ya too, my ghra," Finn tells you.

The Way It Is
Tumblr media
Prompt: Fake Dating
Pairing: Lambert & Essi Other Characters: Julian (Jaskier), Eskel/Geralt
Rating: Teen Content Warnings: No Archive Warnings; platonic/queerplatonic dynamics; pressure to engage sexually; coarse language; alcohol/intoxication; modern AU.
Summary: When Essi and Lambert are setup on a blind date, they don’t expect to get along as well as they do. However, when they decide to keep their relationship platonic and non-romantic, they realize they might face some uncomfortable pressure. For the sake of simplicity, they decide to tell people they’re dating, but is it sustainable?
@witcher-rarepair-summer-bingo
Essi fidgeted with the bent corner of her cafe menu, looking around at the various styles of local artworks hanging on the walls. She was early by about ten minutes, but that didn’t stop her from checking the pearlescent dial of her watch every thirty seconds. Finally, the bell above the door tinkled and a man walked in. Essi could tell from the way he was looking around that he was there to meet someone—her. The only other people sitting alone in the cafe were working on laptops and tablets; no one else waiting for a date. And this man was most certainly looking for one.
He was handsome in a ruffled sort of way, though he’d clearly put in a bit of effort. His black casual dress shirt and slim light-wash jeans fit his lean frame impeccably, and a subtle quantity of mousse was clearly doing its best to tame his short, scruffy brown hair. Even his bristly beard appeared to have been trimmed recently. Though there was nothing particularly remarkable about his clothing, there was something striking about the way he carried himself, a devil-may-care sort of presence that Essi appreciated. For a blind date, she thought, it certainly could be worse. Allegedly, they knew each other, at least based on his abruptly out-of-the-blue text, and the closer she looked, the more her memory of him crystalized.
A loud ping! emitted from Essi’s phone and the man looked up from his own cellular device, clearly having just texted.
“Uh, Essi? Essi Daven, right?” He took a step towards her and leaned in, pointing to his phone screen.
“Yes,” Essi stood to shake his hand, “hi.”
“Nice to see you again. Lambert.”
They sat down awkwardly, both struggling to find the will for smalltalk.
“So…” Lambert had become keenly interested in a black-and-white digital photograph behind Essi’s shoulder.
“Listen,” Essi could feel the words start to tumble out of her mouth, and it was too late to do anything about it. Lambert raised an eyebrow,  “I don’t really know how to say this, so I’m just going to be honest and probably regret it later: I don’t really do this. Dating. I find it strange and uncomfortable and if I’m perfectly honest I think I’d rather die.” She didn’t cringe apologetically, which would have been the expected behaviour to accompany an outpouring of disinterest. Instead she stared at him, wide-eyed, lips slightly pursed as a muscle in her neck twitched, waiting for his response.
Lambert laughed. Genuinely laughed—a joyful release of tension and dread, “Oh, thank Fuck!” Essi blinked in pleasant surprise and watched as Lambert began to relax.
“Excuse me?” Her startlingly blue eyes widened in amusement.
“No, no, I just mean—I would absolutely and one-hundred percent, without a doubt, rather die in a hole than date,” Lambert slotted the edge of the menu under his fingernails and let his eyes wander a little more freely around the cafe.
“So then… why?”
Hm. Direct, frank, amusing lack of filter… the memories were starting to come back from what limited, heavily inebriated, time they’d spent together.
There was something about the straightforwardness of this endearingly odd woman that made Lambert feel infinitely more comfortable. Usually, any kind of interaction with the potential of building mutual interest made him feel like he was playing a game he didn’t know the rules to. The signals, the code words that never meant what they said: having sex on the first date means you’re a slut; not having sex on the third date means you’re a prude; grabbing coffee means this; having dinner means that; if they your arm but don’t invite you up, it means that they’re actually a KGB operative and need to give you the launch codes for a super secret missile...
Fuck that, we have words for a reason. Say what you mean and don’t waste my time. For that reason alone, Essi was already scoring quite well in Lambert’s books.
He shrugged, “You somehow remembered me from the KM Christmas party almost six months ago, and still asked for my number. I figure that at least deserves a coffee and a conversation.”
Essi was bewildered, “I didn’t ask for your number, you texted me.”
Lambert shook his head, “Impossible. No offense, but I absolutely guarantee you I did not.” He produced their short text exchange and scrolled to the top of their conversation:
Hi, is this Lambert? From the KM Christmas party?
You might not remember me, we got talking about
the political situation in Kashmir after about…
Too many drinks. Eeep!
Anyway, I’d love to get a coffee sometime, if
you’re interested.
Sorry, this is Essi Daven.
You called me Goldilocks at one point and
seemed amused XD
Hope you’re well!
Essi snatched Lambert’s phone, shocked and slightly outraged as she reached for her own device, opening her thread with Lambert. The text at the top was not from her, but from the man across from her:
Yeah, hi, this is
Lambert-from-the-KM-Christmas-party.
As it happens, I remember you and our
conversation quite well. Not many folks
happily get into drunken political discussions
You know what, I wouldn’t mind grabbing a
coffee.
Let me know if you’re free in the next couple
weeks!
Lambert gestured emphatically at Essi’s phone screen, “In what world is this an acceptable way to ask someone out?! I wouldn’t have said yes to that!”
“I don’t know,” Essi fired back, “It was straightforward! I found it charming, okay? Is that a crime?”
“No, but I have some serious concerns about your taste in men.”
“Like you’re in such a fine position to judge after the hollow, paltry invitation you accepted—which I absolutely did not write, by the way. I want to make that perfectly clear.”
“Alright, alright, cool your jets, we’ve got bigger fish to fry.” Lambert narrowed his eyes as he passed Essi’s phone back to her, “You didn't fire the first shot, so who texted me from your phone and cleared the history?”
Essi nibbled the inside of her cheek, “I can think of a few.”
“Okay, next question,” Lambert pocketed his phone, “who added you to my contacts before you texted. Because we did not exchange numbers six months ago, but your name was already there when I received it.”
Essi shrugged, “Who has access to your phone?”
“I dunno. Really just Eskel and Geralt and neither of them would—”
“Geralt.”
“Why him?”
Essi’s bright blue eyes turned steely and murderous, “Julian… They’re working together.”
“Wait, wait, wait. Are you telling me that Geralt the-last-thing-I-need Rivia and Julian Alfred these-aren't-my-pants Pankratz think we're so helplessly undateable that they decided to secretly set us up?”
“Eskel doesn’t know me that well; he wouldn’t try to set you up with someone he hadn’t vetted. Who did you talk to first when you got that text from me?”
Lambert’s eyes widened, “Holy shit, they’re working together.”
Essi nodded, a flood of embarrassment warming her cheeks. “Sorry to waste your time. You’re very nice but, um, I should just…” she got up to leave.
“Wh-hey, hold up. I mean, if you wanna go, go, that's fine, but there's something you might want to know first.”
Essi tossed her yellow bangs out of her eyes, “Oh? What's that?”
“This,” Lambert produced an Amex credit card from his breast pocket, “is Geralt's.” The cheeky glint in his eyes was a very convincing argument.
“Fine then. Coffee and a conversation.”
The coffee was hot and decent, and the conversation meandered through the usual topics of music, movies, and television, but also dipped into deeper waters as they grew more comfortable with each other’s company. Of course, it didn’t hurt that neither of them had any stakes in the outcome of this “date”. It made it easier to be frank and open, which in turn led to them quickly enjoying their time together. So much so that coffee turned into lunch, which turned into a long walk in the pleasant weather, which finally landed them outside Essi’s apartment, just around dinner time.
“I have to say, this was actually a pleasant encounter,” she said, turning to face him with a characteristic toss of her bangs.
“Yeah, who’d’ve thought two people forced together by meddling friends would actually find it enjoyable?”
“In light of that,” Essi squared her shoulders and found Lambert’s hazel-brown eyes, “I think it’s fair to say I want to see you again.”
He cringed regretfully and scratched the back of his head, “Ahh, yeah, so… I don’t know if that’s really--”
“Oh, relax,” Essi smirked with a casual touch to Lambert’s forearm. “I don't mean like that. I just mean--you're interesting and fun and, well I don't have many close friends and I feel like we connected well today.”
“Well…”
“I'll make it even simpler: I absolutely, one-hundred percent, am not interested in dating you.”
“Easy there, you know I love it when people get all straightforward with me.”
“I mean it, I just want to be friends,” she toyed back, trying her best to look sultry. It kind of worked.
Lambert bit his lower lip in mock arousal, “Mmm, oh yeah...”
She swayed her shoulders forward and back, doing her best to emulate the seductive actresses and models of the 1950s, “I want to Netflix and chill with a documentary about Soviet propaganda.”
Her last comment prompted a playfully stern look from her companion, “Careful now, you’re wading into actual turn-on territory.”
“You're such a weirdo,” Essi chuckled, giving him an endeared shove. “Seriously, though, would you like to do this again? Friends?”
He nodded sincerely, “Yeah, I think I'd really like that. Just one problem, though.”
“If we claim not to be interested in each other but keep hanging out we’ll never hear the end of it?”
“Bingo.”
Essi hummed thoughtfully and nibbled the inside of her bottom lip, “Well… we could always… pretend?”
***
“Sounds like you two are hitting it off. I’m glad. I know Essi’s been feeling a little isolated between work and being new to the city.” Geralt closed the fridge with his foot and headed towards the sofa, popcorn in one hand, three beers in the other. “I’ll take my card back, by the way.”
Lambert reluctantly handed the Amex back in exchange for a beer and perched on the arm of the sofa. “She’s really something. We’re, uh—yeah, hitting it off is a good word.”
And hitting it off, they were. The last ten days since their first “date” had been more enjoyable than all the dates he’d had in the last year combined. Essi was a fantastic companion: sharp, witty, kind, took no bullshit… They had done absolutely nothing but hang out, and no one had pried them for many details about the nature of their relationship. As far as their friend group was concerned, they were simply dating in the way that most adults dated. This also meant more time to themselves without unwanted interruptions (namely Julian barging in with his spare key to gossip about whatever fires were currently alight on twitter). The first night Lambert had been over, it took Julian all of five minutes to “grab something from the fridge” before parting with a knowing wink.
To her credit and imagination, Essi had expertly fielded her cousin’s initial barrage of questions when she first announced their “involvement.” It wasn’t that she didn’t like her cousin, Essi adored Julian, but she was also the first to admit that the man had no boundaries. What he lacked in that arena, he certainly made up for with opinions, which he was always more than happy to bestow on his younger cousin—usually dating advice, almost always unsolicited. Lambert had a much easier time convincing his side that he and Essi were taking it easy to see where things went. Between Eskel being a consummate gentleman and Geralt having his own Delicate Sensibilities, neither of them had demanded any details.
“As long as you’re both happy and everything’s healthy, that’s all that matters,” Geralt’s partner reiterated, reaching into the bowl on Geralt’s lap.
“Jesus, Eskel, you sound like my Nonna.”
“That's no way to talk to your father,” Geralt smirked into his hand of popcorn
“You're no better,” Lambert took a swig from his beer, lips popping as he lowered the bottle. “I swear, you've turned into a couple of mother hens since you two got together. Quit fussing and watch the game.”
Geralt put his arm around Eskel’s shoulders, “We have gotten a little soft haven’t we?”
Eskel huffed out a laugh, “Probably. Hey, Lambert, don't fuck it up or I'll kick your ass into next week.”
“Thank you. See? Was that so hard?”
“Eh,” Eskel shrugged, helping himself to another handful of popcorn, “I stand by my original statement. Geralt agrees.”
“It's true,” he said between mouthfuls. “Essi’s a good woman. Smart, talented, kind, attractive.”
Eskel cleared his throat.
“Eskel, she is, it's just a statement of fact it doesn't mean that she doesn’t have other…”
“I know it doesn't but I still think you could bear to be a little more…”
“Funny thing,” Lambert interrupted, “I still can’t figure out how this smart, talented, kind, attractive woman’s number programmed itself into my phone. Because I may have been drunk the night we first met, but I have never in my life forgotten a successful number grab. Fess up, fellas. Who was it?”
Eskel’s eyes widened, “Geralt, you didn’t.”
“I… may have… helped Julian gain access to Lambert’s phone.”
“Unbelievable. The betrayal,” Lambert shook his head, eyes still on the game. “If only there was some way to square things up…”
“You charged everything to my company card, didn’t you?”
“First two dates and a fresh pair of pants. Thanks, bud.” Geralt accepted a pat on the back as Eskel began gently but sternly berating him.
Lambert shook his head, smirking as he took another swig of beer, leaving the two lovebirds to bicker amongst themselves. His hip pocket buzzed and he checked his phone: Essi.
Next Wednesday? Pizza and a movie?  Still can't believe you haven't seen  Ocean’s Eleven.
Yeah, okay, fine. Jeez :P 7:30 my place? I'll provide beverages.
If by ‘beverages’ you mean watery beer…
Fuck off, I'll get the good stuff. Unless  you prefer Arbor Mist or some shit.
*gasps* I am offended! (but also it's delicious)
*sigh* do you want me to get you some?
*turtles into hoodie* ...peach or cherry pls?
Haha okay, fine, I'll get a bottle. Can't promise  I won't judge you forever, though ;)
It's okay, I deserve it.  g2g, see you tomorrow! xox

Lambert groaned contentedly, massaging his stomach as he sprawled back on his aging brown sofa, long legs resting habitually on the coffee table. The now-empty pizza box lay abandoned on the far edge, accompanied by four empty beer bottles, and a nearly-empty, unfavourably warm Peach Arbor Mist. The toilet flushed and Essi emerged. Her dark gold hair had long ago been pulled into a messy bun, but her indigo skinny jeans had been replaced by soft-looking grey leggings.
Lambert shook his head in amusement as she settled back next to him on the couch, "I still can't believe you brought your own lounge pants"
"That's because I'm a genius," she quipped, crossing her legs and adjusting the height of her waistband. "Besides, when else will I have the opportunity to actually be comfortable during a date?"
"You took your bra off, too, didn't you?" Lambert asked without missing a beat, eyes never leaving the screen.
"Yup!" Essi confirmed, her sparkling blue eyes glinting with joy as she raised her glass to her lips.
The movie continued as the new friends settled into comfortable silence, their food-drowsy, alcohol-fuzzy states lulling them into a new level of comfortability around each other. Legs fell asleep, positions were adjusted, and shoulders leaned on as the two sought maximum comfort for minimum effort. Soon, an arm was around Essi's shoulder as she settled her cheek on a comfortable spot on Lambert's chest.
"You good?" Lambert asked, only half-irritated at her seemingly endless search for the perfect angle.
"I'm sorry, I thought I'd found a good spot, but..." A few more adjustments of her head and Lambert couldn't take it anymore.
"Jesus, woman, here. Get up for a sec."
Essi sat up as Lambert rearranged himself into a sort of semi-recline with one foot on the floor so his other leg could make room for the tiny pain-in-the-ass that was taking up the rest of the couch space. At his invitation, she wriggled up to the crook of his arm and quickly settled in. Lambert hadn't really thought about what they were doing. Not when Essi had harmlessly leaned against his arm; not when their weight settled into each other; not when Lambert had put his arm around her; not even as he was rearranging to get to where they were now. It had all just... happened. Now, though, with Essi lying still, Lambert felt the weight and warmth of her body shifting gently against his, and it dawned on him that this had the potential to be, well, weird.
But the strange thing was, it didn't feel weird. He'd fucking cuddled before, but there was always a sense of holding back, a tension in his body, being on the lookout for signals from the other person to move onto the Next Step. But now, he actually felt comfortable. There wasn't anything that was supposed to happen after this. Nobody was asking anything of him, no one sending signals he could pick up on but never read properly, no sinking feelings of dread as the other person moved in for a kiss that always felt too soon. Essi was just there, breathing, content. And Lambert was relaxed.
The woman half-on top of him gave a twitch as the credits started to roll, and Lambert let out a private laugh, "Hey, Sleeping Beauty, show's over."
Essi inhaled heavily through her nose and lifted herself up, "Hmmm?"
"Movie's over."
"Did I fall asleep? I'm sorry!" she sat and rubbed her eyes, taking a sip of water to rinse the stale taste from her mouth.
"Eh, only a little." Lambert exited Netflix and tossed the remote back on to the table. "Thought you might wanna start heading home before it gets too late."
Essi nodded in response as she grabbed the pizza box and brought it to the kitchen trash, leaving Lambert to bring the empties.
"You going to finish this atrocity of a beverage?" Lambert waggled the near-empty wine bottle at Essi as he passed on his way to the sink. She merely scowled and shook her head, letting him pour it down the drain 'where it belonged anyway'.
Essi gathered her things and met Lambert by his front door, checking her pockets for her phone and keys one last time before putting her shoes on.
"You okay to walk? Want me to come with?"
It was only 10:30 on a weeknight, and she appreciated the gesture all the same, but it was fine to walk. "Thanks, though. And thank you for tonight. I really needed to get out of the house. I hope, um..."
She trailed off, not sure how to ask. She didn't have the same physical boundaries that most others seemed to have. She was affectionate—often overly so, and it had led to more than a few misunderstandings in the past. She didn't want Lambert to feel as though she had ulterior motives when the simple fact of the matter was that she hadn't really been thinking. Between the instant relief of not actually being on a date and Lambert's easy manner all evening, she'd forgotten that most friendships didn’t generally involve that much physical contact. Would Lambert be confused now? Thinking they were onto something more than friendship? Had he been wanting more? Had she pushed past a point of no return and doomed their friendship?
She inhaled, "Were you comfortable tonight?"
For a split second, Lambert flailed, wondering whether he’d made her uncomfortable. Fuck, she'd seemed comfortable, if anything it felt like he’d been following her lead but maybe...
"I—yeah. That was, I enjoyed that. Were... were you not—?"
Essi smiled and Lambert relaxed again, "No, I was. I wanted to ask in case, that's all. Boundaries and all that. I'll text you when I'm home."
Lambert opened the door and waved her off toward the elevator, "'Kay. 'Night!"
The door clicked shut.
Okay, alright. Fine. Did they cuddle? Yes. Did he enjoy it? Fuck yes. He absolutely didn’t care what anyone might think about how he chose to enjoy his time with other people. However, this didn’t stop him from acknowledging that he was in uncharted friendship territory. More than anything, he was worried about how Essi really felt. Of course, she had no reason not to be honest with him. But the last thing he wanted to do was play fast and loose with someone’s emotions, especially not a friend, and definitely not one as close as Essi. Time would tell. As Lambert’s head hit the pillow, the memory of her warmth and weight settled over him again, and he slept soundly for the first time in months.
***
“Yes Poppet, but have you slept together yet? Honestly, you’ve been dating for almost three weeks now, what could you possibly be waiting for?”
Oh, I don’t know, hell to freeze over? You to mind your own business? Whichever comes first…
“I mean, you clearly adore one another, I’ve never seen you happier. What’s there to lose?’”
Essi scoffed.
Julian placed his hands on her shoulders, “I know it’s been a while for you, but I think you can afford to let yourself go a little, have some fun, hm? Besides, it’s better to find out sooner rather than later if you’re sexually incompatible.”
She took a deep breath, “That’s a very good point, Julian, I’ll think about that.” The dating act was starting to wear a little thin, but it was worth not having to explain to anyone that they weren’t doing exactly what it looked like they were doing.
Julian took time to give his cousin a scrutinizing look, “Well, by the look of things it won’t be long anyway. If you spend all of your time together as tangled up as you were the other night when I came over, it’ll happen sooner rather than later. Just trust your gut, and when in doubt, a little hint never goes awry.”
Needless to say, Essi more or less ignored her cousin’s advice.
As the weeks stretched on, it became evident that they were quickly becoming what most people would consider to be more than friends. The first time they pulled the covers back and climbed into bed, each on their half of the mattress, they were aware that yet another boundary of friendship had been pushed a little farther into the grey zone. But, they woke up the next morning feeling happy, content, and refreshed, and surely there was nothing wrong with two people sharing a comfortable bed. Essi had woken up with crust in her eyes and her nightgown bunched around her waist. Lambert had woken up with morning wood and his hair a mess. Neither of them cared. People wake up in the morning, big deal.
Still, it didn’t stop the questioning that oscillated in the background of Lambert’s mind. Was he unknowingly leading Essi on by allowing her so much closeness without a clearly defined relationship? She’d made her own disinterest clear enough on their first “date”,  but feelings change over time. What she’d told him three weeks ago might not be true anymore…
And then there was that soft warm tingle in the middle of his chest every time she lay her head in his lap, every time he ran his fingers through her hair. He knew he wasn't in love. Not that he was an expert, but what was all that "when you know, you know" bullshit if he couldn’t trust his own feelings? He loved her, sure, but more like a... not a sister, that would be weird. He didn't know what like. Whatever. Fuck it. Eskel had said it best three weeks ago: “As long as you're happy and everything’s healthy, that’s all that matters.” Yeah, sure. We’ll stick with that.
As far as Lambert and Essi were concerned, it was what it was, and whatever it was was working… wasn’t it?

"Fuckin' finally!"
The door to Essi's apartment clicked closed as the tenant wilted against it, emitting an exhausted groan, "Two. Hours. It took me two hours to get home!" She toed off her penny loafers and abandoned her purse and jacket in a pile by the front door, ignoring the hook three inches to her left. She flopped heavily onto her living room carpet.
"I see you found my spare key," she added, not at all surprised that Lambert had managed to let himself in.
"Yeah, you should probably put that in a less obvious spot," he answered, crossing to the door to hang her things up. "So, I see it's a lying on the floor kind of evening. Can I interest you in a drink to start? Vodka pairs well with the general vibe of Done-With-This-Shit, or we also have tequila if you feel like shouting out the window after a couple shots. Alternatively, there's gin if you want to cry later."
Essi smiled with her eyes closed, feeling her body slowly relaxing into the spongy throw rug underneath her, "You know me so well."
"Vodka?"
"Vodka. Euch, I need to vacuum!," Essi peeled herself to a seated position as clinks and clatters began in the kitchen. She hopped in the shower to rinse the day off, and after a few minutes, there was a knock on the bathroom door.
"Yeeees?" she called, playfully.
"Drink delivery!" Lambert hollered back, "you want this now or later?"
"Why are you so good to me?"
There was a draught of cool air as Lambert opened the bathroom door, "Because you only marginally annoy me. Here," he passed his hand between the shower wall and the opaque fish-scale-patterned curtain. "What's on the docket for tonight?"
Essi groaned, "I don't know, I'm sorry. I used all my brain cells trying not to murder people on the streetcar."
"Okay," Lambert sat on the lidded toilet, "here's the thing. I kinda maybe figured that might be the case so I kinda maybe picked up a few things to make dinner."
A shampoo-piled head poked out from behind the curtain, "You're kidding."
"Nuh-uh."
"I love you."
Lambert chuckled, "Yeah, you're alright. Come on, hurry up, this bathroom's a fuckin’ sauna, and I don’t want the croutons to get soggy." Essi burbled an answer about conditioner and almost done, and Lambert took that as his cue to leave.
Dinner was simple: pan fried Salmon with crispy skin (delicate and buttery on the inside); wax beans in butter (tender and not overcooked); grilled brussels sprouts (just beginning to brown on the edges); and a fresh caesar salad. Everything done to perfection. Full, content, and ready to take their relaxation to the next step they settled themselves on Essi’s blue-grey sectional to begin the arduous task of deciding what to watch.
This was proving particularly difficult with the addition of Essi's caveat that whatever they chose not be "too plot-heavy" which so far had included Masterchef, an interior design show, and program about shepherding in the Orkneys.
"Sweetheart, you gotta give me some slack here. I thought I was on track with the sheep!"
"I know, I'm sorry!" Essi muffled into his shirt sleeve. "I do like animals..." She gasped loudly. "BLUE PLANET."
Lambert stopped the endless scrolling and pushed play as the soothing voice of David Attenborough filled the small living room.
"Hey! Why'd you pause it?"
Lambert was standing up, "If we're going to do this, then we're doing it right. Hang on."
Essi slumped on the sofa as the microwave kicked on. In a few minutes, there was popcorn in their laps and half a bottle of vodka on the table with an ice bucket and lemon wedges in a bowl. Lambert read off his phone screen.
"We will take a drink when:
-David says 'Extraordinary' -David uses a clear understatement such as 'But then again, living in an active volcano is not without its risks' -An animal is being eaten -An animal is mating -There is sped up footage of a plant growing."
"Oh no," Essi lamented, chewing her popcorn ungracefully, "I'm going to get so drunk."
"You got it, Goldilocks. Fill up."
And with that, they were off, taking it slow with their vodka twists, but nonetheless feeling the warm buzz start to tingle under their skin. The box of microwave popcorn was empty by halfway through, and the remains of Essi's exhaustion had almost dispersed entirely.
"Ooh! Understatement! Drink!!"
By ten o’clock, pink-cheeked and feeling boisterous, they had finished with their favourite parts of Blue Planet, or at least the ones they had patience for, and had moved on to Planet Earth II.
“Holy fuck, that’s a lot of snakes—Go, you little fucker! Go!”
The drama on the screen had caused the two to separate from one another while Lambert invested himself in the success of the small lizard. Once the baby Galapagos Iguana had made it to safety, they were once again able to recline without Essi risking an elbow to the face.
She bundled against him, scooting farther between his legs where he leaned in the corner of the sectional. He gathered her hair and draped it over her left shoulder so it wouldn't get caught in his buttons—they'd learned that the hard way. It was still damp, cool to the touch, and smelled like verbena sea salt shampoo. He felt a pulse of affection ripple through him as her weight resettled. He loved that feeling. It had taken some time to get used to it. But now it was high on his list of favourite things. He was happy. And it was healthy. And that really was all that mattered.
Right?
Eskel’s words turned themselves around again in his mind as he wrapped his arm around the front of Essi’s shoulders. He let himself indulge in the texture of her cotton knit nightshirt under his fingers. He relished in the peace of mind at being able to just be there with someone who meant something to him and made absolutely no demands. He let himself relax.
Essi felt a kiss land on the top of her head with a playful, "Muwah!"
She giggled quietly, "Thank you!" Then, upon further thought… Did he want to kiss her? Her mind did a double take as she tried to get on top of the ball.
It wasn’t impossible. They were close after all, and she wasn’t opposed to the idea. She’d recently found herself in a balancing act of realizing she could, in theory, have a deeper kind of feeling for Lambert. Only if, for whatever reason, it turned out he felt the same way. These weren’t the helpless uncontrollable feelings of ride-or-die infatuation; they were malleable, translatable, general feelings of affection and fondness that belonged in any number of different relationships and dynamics.
No sense risking it, she thought. They'd found a liminal space of comfort and safety that she'd never experienced with anyone else before, and if the options were between being a little confused and ruining everything, the choice was an easy one. Then again, if Lambert was developing feelings for her, she didn’t want to miss an opportunity. Shit. Her cheeks burned as she felt the question rise closer to her lips.
"Lambert?" she sat up abruptly and turned to her friend who was still moulded into the corner of the couch, watching the mating rituals of exotic birds with bewildered skepticism.
He jolted at Essi’s sudden movement, "Hello, yes."
Her bright blue eyes were now slightly unfocused, "Do you—? Nevermind." She lay back against him, suddenly skittish..
"Mm, nah, try again," he said, sluggishly. "What’s up, buttercup?"
She swayed a little when she sat up, "Are you happy with what we are?"
Lambert blinked, caught slightly off-guard. The question was easy enough to answer, "Yeah! I mean I don’t know what the fuck we are, but I’m feeling pretty good about it. Shit, why? Are you not? I can be less… whatever. Or… more?" It wasn’t like he was repulsed by the idea of anything else happening between them—in theory it was a possibility. In practice, however...
Essi put an emphatic hand on Lambert’s knee, her glassy eyes going wide, "Do you want more?"
"What? No! I dunno, I—maybe. I haven’t really thought about it. I mean…” Lambert searched Essi’s face for any clue that might help him know how to proceed, “I don’t not want anything else. Fuck, I don’t know! I’m used to doing things the other way around. You know the drill: uncomfortable date, smoosh faces together, have sex, hope feelings fall out. Lather-rinse-repeat. I dunno, do we have to… But what if we try something and...? I don’t wanna lose this."
Essi leaned in close and whispered, “I have an idea.”
"Why do I feel like I'm going to regret this?"
"We should kiss."
Lambert nearly swallowed an ice cube, "What?!"
"Just once. Quickly. Just... in case."
"You want me, Lambert, to kiss you, Essi Daven, on the lips."
She nodded sincerely, "For science."
There was a brief pause during which Essi felt the beginnings of panic brewing in her stomach, but by the time she'd finished grappling with potential consequences, Lambert was filling their glasses.
"Alright. Fine. My friend wants me to kiss her for science? Fuck it. I'll drink to that."
They downed their drinks and squared up, knee to knee on the edge of the sofa as they each prepared for their best form—or as good as they could offer given the circumstances. They counted down, 3-2-1...
The kiss was quick, over as soon as it had begun, and both friends pulled away with questioning looks. Inconclusive. They tried again for a little longer, still returning with the same quizzical expressions. They went in for a third time, committing more thoroughly, and for a brief moment it seemed they might have found the semblance of a spark. But it didn’t build. It felt… fine? But no different than if they were lying together on the sofa. It was just another thing they were doing. They each tried to find the right word for what they were feeling, but were soon distracted by the oddness of it all.
Essi started to giggle. Less than a second later, Lambert joined her, and they both pulled away, thoroughly satisfied that their experiment had yielded a strong No on the subject of More. There was a dull thud as Essi slid from the couch and onto the floor, still holding her drink in one hand and laughing hysterically.
Lambert sighed and shook his head, "I think it’s time we got you to bed."
Headaches and dry mouths greeted the two friends the next morning when they blinked awake. Essi’s hair was a cotton-candy mess, having still been slightly damp when Lambert put her to bed. The brunet himself didn’t look much different from his usual scruffy state as he gathered Essi up in an armful of duvet and squeezed tight.
“Gods, Lambert, I still need to breathe,” Essi chuckled, pressing her back into his chest.
“You’ll get over it,” he teased and self-indulgently nuzzled even closer. “You feeling alright? I mean, aside from the hangover. About last night?”
“Oh no,” Essi groaned, “I’m so sorry, Lambert. I shouldn’t have said anything. It’s just—you kissed my head and then that got me wondering about whether you might want something else, and then I didn’t really know what was happening and—”
“Hey, easy on the rambling, okay, I’m running on limited brain cells, here. Look,” Lambert sat up to find those big blue eyes, now shining brightly, “I have no idea what the fuck this is that we’ve got going on, but I like it fine just the way it is.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah. And we can keep talking about that. Just, you know, maybe next time something’s on your mind, don’t wait ‘til we’re wasted at 2am?”
“Okay, deal. Can we go get bacon now?”
Lambert chuckled, “Yeah, alright, fine. Make me put pants on, I see how it is.”
Their conversation continued over strong coffee and eggs benedicts. Between their check-in that morning and everything that had happened the previous night, it was well-established that they were perfectly happy where they were. Rather, the main topic of conversation was their growing desire to level with their friends about the nature of their relationship. Eskel and Geralt, they both agreed, would be the easiest—Lambert could tell them that evening. Julian and Essi’s friends on the other hand would be a little more difficult.
Telling Julian together would be best, Essi thought. He was bound to have questions, and if both she and Lambert were there to answer them definitively and explain that no, they didn’t have secret feelings for one another; and yes, they really were just friends and not at all interested in exploring the relationship further thank you very much. Exactly when this discussion with Julian would occur still wasn’t clear. Realistically, they could pick any time, but they decided to wait until Lambert could tell the Old Men. At least then they were assured some less invasive support.
Their reaction was easy enough to predict: Eskel reassuringly repeated his standby “As long as you’re both happy with things…” and twirled a forkful of pasta; Geralt tilted his head thoughtfully and said, “That sounds very nice. I’m happy for you.” Lambert had expected mild disapproval, concern that they were deviating too far from the norm and into a complex dynamic that would be too messy to manage. Instead, Geralt simply said it ‘sounded very nice.’ Lambert smiled into the open refrigerator on his way to get a beer.
The following weekend was Julian’s birthday, and, as per their annual tradition, the group all gathered on Friday evening at the birthday boy’s favourite restaurant—Vegelbud’s. The two decided to tell him the week after his birthday so as not to detract from his Big 3-0. Just one more week, and it would all be in the open. Easy breasy.
The afternoon of the dinner, Eskel and Geralt received a group text: Haven’t told Julian the details yet. Keep the beans to yourselves please (I’m looking at you, @Eskel).
“Why me?” Eskel turned to Geralt over his paperwork, looking a little hurt.
Geralt chuckled, “You have a slight tendency to overshare when you want to be supportive.”
“I do?” He turned on the bar stool to follow his partner on the way upstairs.
“It’s not a bad thing, but…” Geralt sighed, “Lambert has always needed to feel in control of situations like this. He doesn’t want one of us bringing this up before he’s ready to talk about it, especially in a public place, you know how he gets when he feels cornered. And Julian is Essi’s cousin…”
Eskel raised a hand, “You’re right, you’re right. All points taken. Are you showering?”
Geralt smirked as he headed for the stairs, “Come on then.”
Four hours later and halfway through dinner, everything had gone swimmingly. The food had been expectedly delicious, the company and conversation excellent, and so far no one had felt the need to bring up Essi and Lambert’s relationship on any level. That is until Julian got a few drinks under his belt, and decided it was time to document the occasion. Geralt and Eskel were the first victims.
“Aww just look at you two! So in love, so vivacious and full of adoration,” Julian held up his phone as Geralt touched the side of his head to Eskel’s. Beep-Chk! A perfect image of a happy couple was captured and posted to Instagram (#julianturns30 #dinneratvagelbuds #dinnerout #cutiesofinstagram #favoriteotp #gaycouplesofinstagram #livelaughlove…). There were a few more photos of the three of them together, the white chocolate raspberry cheesecake with the candle in it, a group shot taken by the waiter. It was all so close to being over, Essi could practically taste the refuge of the streetcar.
"Come on, lovebirds, show us a smooch!" Oh no. Oh no, oh no, oh no. Essi’s stomach lurched and she felt her cheeks start to warm. Lambert’s hand landed gently on her knee under the table, his fingers pressing firmly into her leg as she desperately tried to think of something to say.
"Oh, um..."
Across the table, Geralt and Eskel shared a wordless communication: de-escalate, distract, redirect.
“You’ll want to eat that cheesecake before it gets warm” Geralt offered. “I hear it’s so light it’ll disintegrate in a heartbeat.” Eskel nodded in encouragement, taking a bite of his own.
“I know, I know,” Julian shrugged, “Just a quick one. Say Cheese!”
"Not right now, Julian," Essi tilted her head, her eyes flashing a little.
"Oh come on, Poppet! I know you don't like PDA, it's just one little picture--"
“Don’t call me Poppet.”
Eskel cleared his throat loudly, "Doesn't seem they're that keen on it. Maybe let's try for one another time."
"It's past your one-month-a-versary, let everyone see how in love you are."
"Julian," Geralt growled, "leave it."
Julian covered his mouth in alarm, "I’m so sorry, have you not used that word yet? I didn’t mean anything by it, I just want the world to see how happy my beautiful cousin is!"
“Really Julian, it’s not necessary we—” Essi’s fingernails were starting to dig into Lambert’s palm from the sheer effort of maintaining composure. She wasn’t sure whether she wanted to cry or disappear, and with neither of those being an option, it seemed the only possible escape was for them to kiss. They’d done it before. No big deal. It would feel off, but they’d just go back to her place and drink about it after.
“Essi, what’s the matter with you, it’s just one little picture, and we all know you’re not camera-shy. On three, ready? One, two…”
"For fuck's sake we're not dating!"
The table all silently turned their attention to Essi whose cheeks had been turning progressively redder.
“What?” Her cousin laughed incredulously.
“We’re not a couple, Julian. We’re friends. We have been from the beginning, but we didn’t want to tell you because we knew you wouldn’t fucking leave us alone until you could boast about having set us up.”
Lambert shared a brief look with Eskel before lowering his eyes to the tablecloth, his hand still firmly clutched in Essi’s.
Julian gaped, “So, it was all… the cuddling, the laughing, that time I came over and you were asleep on the couch, that was all… a ruse?”
“No, Julian, that was real. I told you, we’re friends.”
“That’s not friends! Since when have friends watched a movie half-on-top of each other?”
“Two people can enjoy each other's company lying flat, Julian,” Eskel’s rich voice interjected across the table and the discussion ground to a halt.
Geralt shrugged with his tea at his lips, “It is the twenty-first century after all.”
Julian’s cornflower blue eyes flitted back and forth between the two friends, utterly bewildered. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Well what with your complete and utter invasion of privacy for the sake of hooking us up, we didn’t necessarily trust you to believe us,” Essi answered curtly, her hand shaking slightly.
“Poppet, you could have just told me—”
“Stop. Calling me that. And I did tell you, Julian!” she exploded. “I told you the first day I moved here. The first. Day. I said, ‘Julian, I think I want to take a break from dating until I’ve been settled for a year.’ And what did you do? Conspired with my well-meaning former mentor to hook me up with someone I had one good conversation with at a Christmas party. And do you know what? We are happy. But we’re happy in our own way. And maybe our boundaries with each other seem a little strange to you, but we’re not fooling ourselves. We don’t want to kiss each other, we don’t want to have sex, and we don’t want a relationship. And even though it’s absolutely none of your damn business, I’ll tell you anyway: we’ve talked about it. All of it. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I don’t think I want to be here anymore.”
The chair legs scraped against the floor of the restaurant as Essi stood to leave, throwing her purse over her shoulder as she went. Lambert looked hesitantly around the table, “I should probably, you know…” He gestured after Essi with his thumb. Eskel gave Lambert the go ahead and he quickly stood to follow his friend out of the restaurant, leaving a very stunned Julian with the other two. He found her perched on the parking barrier in the small lot to the left of the front doors. He called to her and she looked up. Eyes shining, mascara running...
“Ah shit, you know I’m no good with this kind of thing.”
“I’m sorry, Lambert, I just—” she blew her nose, “—he just wouldn’t stop and I didn’t know what to do or say, and it all just came pouring out. I didn’t want it to. The whole time I was begging myself to stop, but I just couldn’t, it’s been bottled up for so long and-and—but it’s his birthday, and—oh, he must feel so awful! I didn’t want to make him feel bad, but—and with Eskel and Geralt there too! They must think I’m horrible! I’m so sorry, Lambert, I didn’t want it to be like this, I wanted to have him over and sit him down and be patient, and instead I’ve just made a complete mess of things. And on his birthday! It’s his birthday, oh God, this is the worst thing I could have done.” Essi choked back bitter tears as she tried desperately to stem the flow with her soggy tissue, “Are you upset with me, Lambert? If you are, I understand. Maybe we should take a break of some kind, you know. Not see each other for a while and—”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold it right there. Look, I’m probably not going to say any of the right stuff here, but I am absolutely not upset with you. You got that? And for what it’s worth, I don’t think us taking a break from spending time together is going to do anything. Unless you’re looking to punish yourself by taking away a nice thing which, okay. But the fact that you’re willing to ditch me instead of Arbor Mist says something about our friendship I’m not too pleased with.”
Essi turned her wide, pleading, bloodshot eyes to Lambert who cracked a smile, “Jesus, I’m kidding! You adorable fucking mess, c’mere.” He pulled his petite friend into a hug and rested his chin on the top of her head until she quieted down. Neither of them was quite sure how much time had gone by, but Essi found herself wishing it had been long enough for everyone to have gone home so she didn’t have to face whatever aftermath she’d left behind.
Meanwhile, Eskel and Geralt had settled the bill and offered to give Julian a lift back to their place for a night cap, not wanting to leave the evening on such an unsettled note. Essi needed space, and whatever company she needed, Lambert was clearly capable of providing. It was for the best, they suggested, and dissuaded Julian from trying to call her.
“Best to sleep on things,” Geralt said, tucking his card back into his wallet and giving the waiter a nod in gratitude. “We can meet for coffee this weekend and sort this out. For now, just let her cool down.”
Eskel clapped Julian encouragingly on the shoulder as they made their way into the damp summer night air. As they turned into the parking lot, they came face-to-face with Essi and Lambert who had clearly just turned to come back inside. Both cousins looked like they had seen better days: Essi’s eyes were puffy and red, her cheeks blotchy and streaked with inky makeup stains; Julian was perhaps less dishevelled, but the dark circles under his eyes were more pronounced, his boyish features now dejectedly weighted down with remorse and hurt.
“Juian, I’m so sorry, I didn’t—”
Essi’s cousin raised his hand, “Don’t. Please don’t. Essi, I am so, so sorry. I never meant to push you like that, I didn't realize... you both have been so happy this last month and—"
"It's okay, really, we can talk about this all another time. I'm just so sorry I ruined your birthday. We wanted to sit down with you and talk properly but..." Essi's tears welled up again, and Julian smiled weakly.
"But we both did what we always do?"
She sniffed, nodding emphatically with a tearful, "Yeah.” Julian pulled his cousin into a fond embrace while the other three clumped together to watch the reconciliation.
“Oh! Here,” Essi reached into her purse and pulled out a small, neatly-wrapped box. “Happy birthday!”
Julian opened his gift without a second thought, his face brightening instantly. The box contained a set of premium ultra-light guitar strings and a pair of concert tickets. The perfect gift. Overwhelmed with gratitude, and the atmosphere having been recovered, Julian suggested they all attend brunch together that Sunday morning, his treat by way of apology. Geralt offered to split the bill as a peace offering for his part in the initial setup, and the five made a date.
A fresh start, a promise of spending time together with fewer secrets and, Julian conceded, a few more boundaries.
