Rain poured in sideways sheets that blew over the rooftops, filling the pitted roads to the brim and turning them into a sea of mud and horse shit. The wind whipped around the corners of the buildings smacking around anyone unfortunate enough to be caught in the deluge. Tugging the edge of your hat down a bit further to keep it from flying away, you pushed through the dark of night toward the glowing windows dead ahead. A golden glow and rowdy voices spilled out from the pub whose presence was the only source of life in the grim surroundings.

Warmth rolled out in a most pleasant wave as you pushed your way inside the bar. The place was full to the brim with intoxicated patrons letting off steam after a long day of work, their faces and hands still coated with the filth of their jobs. Thankfully the men seemed too far gone at this point to notice your presence. Behind the bar stood a kindly-looking man, a smile pulled at the corners of his mouth as he pulled another beer from the tap. Watching from the shadows, you waited for the men to grab their drinks before approaching the bartender.

Catching your movement out of his peripheral, he began to speak before getting a good look at you, “What can I get for ya? Beer or …” wiping his hands on a rag, his eyes roved over your figure before speaking again, “Sorry love, we don’t serve unaccompanied ladies at the Garrison. I’m afraid you’ll have to leave.”

“That’s all right, I’m not here for a drink. I uh… I’m lookin’ for someone. I was told that I might be able to find ‘em here.”

“Not sure if I’ll be of any help, but who are you lookin’ for?”

“His name’s Thomas Shelby.”

The man’s eyes narrowed as he sat down the cloth he was holding on the countertop, “I don’t know who told you that he’d be here, but I can assure you that this isn’t the place.”

“But you do know who he is, yeah?”

“Yes, I do, but he isn’t ‘er, and it isn’t my job to meddle in other people’s business. If you want to get in touch with him, you’ll have to figure out a different way.”

“But I don’t ‘ave another way. Please, I came all this way. I-I don’t even need to speak to him, I just-”

Clearing his throat he glanced toward the side of the bar as he continued, “Listen, I can’t help ya, and moreover, it’s not safe for a lady to be out in Small Heath at this hour. What I can do is get someone to walk you home, but beyond that, I’m afraid I’ll be of no help.”

“Fine. I’ll leave, if you promise to give him this.” reaching into the hidden pocket of your coat, you pulled out a worn envelope and held it out for the man to take.

Hesitantly, he looked closer at the paper, “Why should I do that?”

“It’s from William Butler,” Swallowing hard, you worked up the courage to keep eye contact, “He’ll want to read it.”

Catching your face, he noticed the way your jaw twitched as you spoke the name. There was a sadness in your eyes that worked its way over the rest of your features, pinching the corners of your mouth in a frown as you stared at him.

“I’m sorry. I’m sure you mean well, but I can’t do this for you.”

“Why the fuck not? I ‘aven’t asked you to kill a man, I’ve asked ya to deliver a letter.”

“As I told ya, I’m not here to get involved with other people’s business, and certainly not Thomas Shelby’s.” Turning away, he shouted a name into the crowd, drawing another person to the bar, “Make sure she gets home safe, all right? And then get your ass back here and clear up the mess you and the rest of your mates made. No extra stops, you ‘ere me?”

“Yes, sir. No, problem, sir.”

Giving you no time to protest further, the young man grabbed you lightly by the elbow and did his best to guide you through the crowd. The walk back to your rented room was quiet other than the sounds of the wind whipping through the air. The boy who accompanied you had the good sense to keep his mouth shut, but whether that was from a fear of the hateful look you’d given him when he’d introduced himself or fear of the bartender's wrath if he didn’t take care of this business in good time, you’d never know.

Safely inside, you hung your sopping clothes wherever you could find room before slipping into a dry set of pajamas. Grabbing the flask from your bag and your gun, you took a seat in the stiff wooden chair near the window. The whoosh of heavy drops and bright flashes of lightning flooded the tiny space and did nothing to steady your nerves.

Staring blindly into the night, you fought a silent battle with your mind. Pushing it back from the dark recesses you tried so hard to avoid. Some nights the battle was more readily won, the odds tipped in your favor by early and heavy consumption of whiskey and laudanum. On other nights, the fight was lost before it even began. The cool metal of your gun pressed hauntingly into the palm of your hand as the memories of that night pounded against your soul and overwhelmed your senses. The iron tang of blood, warm and wet upon your skin. The profound silence was broken by the desperation of your screams. No, on those nights it was only sheer willpower that kept you from falling into the abyss.

This night would be one of the latter.

Murky gray light filtered through the lacey curtains, the brightness was enough to rouse you from the weak sleep you’d fallen into the previous night. Sitting up, you rolled your head from side to side in an attempt to release the tension in your muscles. Falling unconscious in the chair with your head pressed against the window did little to alleviate the bone-deep exhaustion that had become your constant companion.

The cap of your flask squeaked in protest as you spun it open. Tossing back a swallow of the astringent liquid, you stood from the chair and assessed your surroundings. A singular suitcase sat open and mostly empty on the bed. From the looks of the clothes you’d hung around the room the previous night, they had a long way to go in terms of drying before they’d be ready to wear again. Only one other outfit remained untouched in your bag.

Setting down your drink, you moved to the bed. The weight of your body caused the mattress to creak, the whole frame moved with you as you adjusted your position. Your fingertips brushed over the black dress that sat folded neatly in front of you. The cotton was soft if a bit threadbare, but it would do.

By the time you made your way out onto Watery Lane, sunshine had burned away the morning clouds, leaving behind a beautiful blue sky. Tipping your face up, you let the warmth rush over your skin for a moment. Hearing the sound of voices barreling down the walk, you forced yourself to move. At a loss for how to proceed after the failure of the previous night, you decided to give the Garrison one more shot.

In the light of day, the clattering of heavy machinery echoed through the streets. Its noise was a welcome distraction from the pounding of your heart as you strode toward the bar. Its humble black exterior blended into the ambiance of the city, matching the looks of the buildings and the people who inhabited them perfectly. Wasting no time, you made your way inside. The clip of your heels on the floor clearly announced your entrance.

“We’re closed. You’ll have to get your drink elsewhere.”

Stopping in your tracks, your focus turned to the man behind the bar, his back still turned to you as a cigarette hung loosely between the fingers of his right hand. The fine black suit he wore was certainly a cut above the rest, its pristine fabric hugged his figure perfectly. Pouring three fingers of whisky, he took a sip and continued to ignore your presence.

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to interrupt.”

At the sound of your voice, the man turned, his piercing blue eyes locked onto you immediately, “No worry, you’re not interrupting anything. Is there somethin’ I can help you with?”

“Uhh, maybe. I’m lookin’ for someone.”

“And who’d that be?”

“It’s Thomas Shelby. I, I was told by some people at the station that if I wanted to find any of the Shelbys I should try the Garrison.”

“Really?” clearing his throat, he tossed back the rest of his drink before speaking again, “An’ what do you need with him?”

“I have a letter I need to give to him. That’s all.”

“A letter. What’s so important about this letter?”

“Why do you care?”

“Curiosity. Drink?” Sitting down an empty glass on the counter, he held out the bottle of whiskey as a question.

“Sure.” Closing the distance to the bar, you hoisted yourself onto one of the seats, and tossed back the amber liquid in one quick swallow, “But you didn’t truly answer my question. Why do you care?”

“Call it a vested interest.”

“Jesus. You know what, thank you for the drink, but I think I’ll be going now. No reason to stay since you obviously can’t help me.”

Tossing a coin on the counter, you slid from your seat and turned away toward the door, but you didn’t get far before the man’s powerful voice called out.

“Eh, wait! Where the hell do you think you’re goin’?” his strong hand clasped tightly around your wrist as he spun you around.

Unwilling to give him the upper hand so easily, you cooly held his gaze, “ I’m goin’ to find someone who can actually fuckin’ help me.”

Fed up with the bullshit, you turned around rapidly to exit.

“For fucks sake, it’s me. I’m Thomas Shelby.”

Frozen in place you let the hot wave of anger that flooded your veins simmer for a second before gathering up the strength to face him.

“Now that we’ve got that on the table, why are you really ‘ere?”

“I have a letter, as I told you.”

“That’s not what I’m fuckin’ asking.”

“Then what is it you want me to say, Mr. Shelby? Do you want me to say that I’m here because of my dead husband? Or is that not enough? Maybe you want to know that it’s because the last thing he left me was a fuckin’ note telling me to bring this to you?” pulling the letter from your pocket, you held it up for him to see, “Is that what you want to hear?”

A blank look fell over Thommy’s face as he contemplated what you’d told him.

“What’s your name?”

“Y/N. My husband is… was William Butler.”

“William.” a lost look replaced the blank stare, “He… he and I… we served… he was a good man.”

“Yes, I know. Now, are you gonna take this letter? Or should I haul meself all the way back home and explain to him over his grave that I failed to do the last thing he asked of me, hmm?”

Reaching out, his hand shook as he took the paper from you.

“Thank you, Mr. Shelby. Now, if you don’t mind, I’ll be going.”

“Hold on, you can’t just leave me with this letter, and then disappear. Where will I be able to find you?”

“First of all, Thomas, let’s get one thing straight. I can do just that. I did what I came here to do, and now I have no use for this shithole of a city. But if you read that letter, and decide that you need to clear your conscience or whatever the fuck it is you feel you need to do, you’ll be able to find me at 725 Watery Lane. I’m there until the end of the week.”

With that, you stormed out of the Garrison, slamming your palms against the wood of the door so hard that it stung up to your wrists. Wobbly legs took you back across the road. Tears streamed in hot rivers down your cheeks as you pushed inside your room. Unable to move any further, you sunk to the ground behind the door, your back flush with it. With unsteady hands, you pulled out your flask and took a swig before reaching back into the pocket in search of the tiny vial you kept hidden inside for emergencies.

Your finger closed around the tan bottle and pulled the cork. Tipping it back, the liquid slid down your throat, mixing with the cheap alcohol you’d just consumed. Soon, the harsh edges of the world began to fade, easing the grief and anger that had threatened to pull you under. Resting your head back against the door, you let your eyes close as you slipped away from reality.

This is a large part of why I'm here. When I was working, especially at my last job, I interacted a lot with people young enough to be my children. Then I retired. Other than my daughter's boyfriend, the only people I meet under 30 now are on social media. Even then, it would be few and not much under 30 ... except for here. This is by far the best place for me to stay in touch with younger folks, and it really does seem to help.

Yes, I do still have plenty of "get off my lawn" moments. Sometimes "young people" music or slang just really grates on my nerves. Every so often a young person makes an ignorant comment about history I've lived through, in a way that's so nasty toward people of my age or circumstance, that I can't help but bite back. But mostly I remind myself that young people in every generation have done the same things. Even my own. I personally was worse than most, and remembering that helps me avoid a lot of unnecessary conflict.

But on the important things - issues of bodily autonomy, self determination, inequality and injustice, climate, health, how society should structure itself - I'm far more aligned with young folks than with people my own age (or older). I find myself constantly weighing whether it's worth it to push back when my peers express outdated views - not particularly bad ones, which are rare in my circle, but ones which fail to account for decades of change in both the reality or our understanding of things like economics, mental health, climate, urban design, etc. These small differences have even caused some strain in my marriage, because my wife doesn't really talk to anyone on a regular basis and gets most of her information from older talking heads on NPR or NPR-adjacent podcasts.

There's an old joke about how only the things that existed when you were 18-25 will ever seem cool to you. Everything else is old-people crap or young-people garbage, and the same for ideas as for entertainment or fashion. It's a joke, but there's more than a grain of truth to it. We do form most of our ideas about how the world works at (approximately) that age. It is harder to replace an existing idea than to form a new one. It's important to keep up, to continually update ourselves, but it does get more difficult because of both changes in ourselves and changes (or often lack of changes) in who we interact with. I've been lucky in that regard, but not everyone my age is.

I know I've rambled on a bit, so here's where I circle back to the original point. "Make an extremely conscious effort not to repeat the fucking pattern"? Yeah, sure, as long we also recognize that aging is a form of neurodivergence. Many older people's discomfort with doing new things, or doing old things in new ways, should be familiar to anyone with executive dysfunction or on the autism spectrum. "If you’re close to [30], make a conscious effort to be open to and accepting of younger people"? Yes again, but it also goes the other way. Make a conscious effort to be open to and accepting of older people and their differences too. If you want to think of yourself as a person who celebrates diversity, there can't be one innocent (and inevitable) difference that draws condemnation instead of acceptance. Old people are still people, and not just when they're your own grandparents. The responsibility for maintaining connection between the generations is shared.

I have something to say

this post is for general shippers, anti's, pro shippers, minors, and older folks who still create content; and possibly you too if you are a consumer.

entertaining content of characters who are canonically minors is FINE, but before you take this as a free for all, finish this post.

it is fine under these conditions (in my opinion)

You should never ever write nor draw sexual content of a minor, i understand it is fiction but here's the issue- they are literal kids. you are correct, it is purely fiction, and no, it doesn't affect real life. this isn't just about the people it triggers though (referring to survivors of SA) but it's also about the minors consuming your media, the ones who are exposed to this content will think it is okay to for these things to happen, you have to remember that you aren't going to be able to check all of your followers, these kids aren't fucking dumb they know how to consume this content without you finding out it is quite literally not that hard, but it does affect them developmentally. also, it's just gross.

But, if the characters are canonically minors and you are creating content of them as adults (18+) it should be fine, so long as you aren't making them appear as children and using it to cover it up. we can tell.

to the anti-shippers i do want to say something on behalf of the pro-shipper community. now bare in mind i don't speak for everyone, but there is probably a large group that agrees with me- just don't forget there will always be fucking creeps. being a pro-shipper does not immediately make you a Ph3dophil3, it's called a 'problematic-shipper', not a 'child shipper,' you can't be coming for anyone with a pro shipper in their bio. this can mean anything, interspecies, enemies to lovers crap, literally ANYTHING considered 'problematic,' ...the definition of pro shipper only exists because of antis. literally. you are the ones who deemed stuff as such. age gaps don't just mean children and grown-ass adults, i won't deny that it's gross, but age gaps can also mean a 30-year-old and a 50-60-year-old. either way, i don't give a shit. and to that one person on Twitter talking about how they don't like t!cest because they were groomed by a t!cest shippers, that's okay. your feelings are valid there, you associate t!cest with that memory, but you cannot group all t!cest shippers like that, the choice of one individual does not affect a community as a whole, if it did them churches, the goverment, everyone's uncle or step dad and all celebrities would be gone, it would be ripped to shreds you'd all cancel it. Naruto works way more than any of his predecessors and sleeps in the office or couch so as not to disturb Hinata, when Hinata is specifically designed to accommodate anything that Naruto might require.

Don't get me wrong, I think Boruto is trash. But I am still in interested in SNS in Boruto because that's still canon. Just makes me wonder how Kishi will finally conclude SNS, because their bond still shows clearly in Boruto. Do you think he will kill them any time soon?

Before answering this, I am going to tell you that I don’t watch Boruto. But I know what happened so far, vaguely. Like, Gaiden arc, Karma seal, Kawaki adoption, Kurama’s death, loss of Rinnegan, Time travel arc. Anyways, I might have missed many interactions between Sasuke & Sakura in the filler episodes or other canonical episodes. I would be happy If you send me an episode list or timestamps in where they interact, so that it saves my time instead of me, watching that entire shit show. 

So does Kishi officially hate NH and SS?

In this post, I dissected SS from a non-SNS perspective. It seems Kishi went all out of his way to make their interactions too insincere, blunt and toxic. I mean Sasuke’s absolute lack of interest in her was very evident even until chapter 693. That is right before, their final VoTE fight. And even after Sakura comes to heal their injuries, he just said ‘Ummmm..... I guess Sorry’... 

Kishi could have made Sasuke say some corny shit to Sakura like how he felt bad inside for hurting her, how he missed her, wiping her tears or whatever (Puke!!!! 🤮🤮🤮). Because in the previous chapter, Sasuke basically confessed to Naruto internally about how he felt about Naruto when he was a child. Kishi could have done the same for Sakura in just 4, 5 panels. But anyways, my point is, Kishi’s moment to salvage that ship is chapter 699. 

But he didn’t.

Did Kishi tried to build their bond after marriage?

He definitely could’ve. But he didn’t. 

This shows his clear distaste in SS.

As for NH, Kishi is indifferent. He neither hates them nor loves them. Kishi created Hinata as a pairing fodder and she still is.

Hmmm, I don’t know whether Sasuke hates her, anon. Again, maybe I’ve missed those parts. But when he looks at her, it’s always filled with regrets and an urge to avoid her (like Itachi avoided Sasuke, but for totally sad and genuine reasons). 

But this again begs the question, ‘Why feeling regret or hesitant even after 12 years?’. 

Believe me anon, Love/Bonds/Understanding can happen at anytime of your life. From where I come from, not everyone marries out of love. Arranged marriages are common. But still, many couples make effort and work out their difference, and find love. Kishi could’ve done the same for SS too. 

Is Sasuke that heartless? No.

He was once a boy who bear hugged his brother every time Itachi comes back from the Academy. Itachi’s presence itself made Sasuke so happy. 

Did he become heartless after the massacre? Also no.

Even after the trauma, Sasuke just became aloof and cold. But he always becomes a child who can pout, be silly, becomes animated, bicker around Naruto. So, he can be lovely, but only around the people he choose by himself. 

Still, Sakura is not that person. So, he looks like he is depressed and wants to escape from her at any given chance because of a certain guilt.

To answer, this goes way back, anon. 

Kishi is a person who prefers to write love through intense friendship, sensei-student dynamics and brotherhood. He can occasionally write cute and sweet romance but it can only be short like 2 or 3 pages... or a chapter, max. He can’t go on doing it for 70 chapters for romance. Which was evident from Minato & Kushina, Dan & Tsunade, Obito & Rin. 

But the real deal of Naruto manga is the bond between Naruto and Sasuke. The bond between Itachi and Sasuke also played a huge role in this series. And then comes Hashirama and Madara, Jiraiya and Naruto, Kakshi and Obito, Kakashi and Naruto and many more. So, Kishi pretty much gave an ending he wanted for a long time in chapter 699. He successively pulled off a great manga without corny and shitty romance but with just friendship and brotherhood alone. He didn’t give two shits about NH or SS before chapter 700.

Naruto series’ another success lies on it’s characters tragic backstories. I simply loved them all and most of them made me cry. 

Kishi wanted to move on from Naruto.

But then Money played a big part. Naruto series can be milked in a lot of ways. Editors wanted all the characters to become some baby making dolls. So you have to create pairings. Based on the popularity polls, they decided NH and SS.

In my opinion, Sasuke is a goal-oriented person. He is a wanderer who works on his own accords. Ever since he left Konoha when he was 13, that was his path, so you can’t make him stay in one place. At every stage of his life, he had different goals.

At age 8-15, he had one goal. To kill Itachi. Can he have a romance here? Nope.

At age 16, his goal is to destroy Konoha. No chance of romance in that dark path.

At age 17, he wanted to Revolutionize the shinobi system. Since he wanted to be alone for that goal, no possibility of romance.

At age 18, he adopted Naruto’s dream as his own. To make all shinobi cooperate and look out for Kaguya remains. Romance cannot happen here as he was constantly wandering around and he prefers to work alone.

This is how Kishi designed Sasuke’s character throughout.

Now all of a sudden, if you ask Kishi to go OOC by asking him to write corny romance for his favorite character Sasuke just for the sake of making him relevant to Boruto series, what will he do? 

Since Boruto is a series which is a sequel to Naruto, you pretty much know everyone’s backstory. Those 12 year old New Gen kids possibly can’t have tragic stories like Naruto or Sasuke. 

Kishi being a troller, used this opportunity to create a piss poor sob story for Sarada by making Sasuke as an absentee father and an unloving husband.

He created a sad story for Sarada and he gets to shit on SS ship. Two birds, One stone!!!! 

Now, Sasuke being an unloving husband is OOC ? Nope. He was never a marriage material in the first place. So he is perfectly in-character.

Sasuke being an absentee father is OOC? No and Yes. No, because it’s the effect of the cause I mentioned above. Yes, because unlike Naruto, Sasuke once had a father. He can try to reach her out now and often. but he prefers not to do instead he cares more about Boruto. LOL.

Sasuke being not family oriented is OOC? Nope. He is a goal oriented person. His goal is same as Naruto’s dream. He will go to any extent to fulfill it, even at the expense of his family’s happiness. Because that’s what he learnt from Itachi. What Itachi taught him was, even at the expense of his own happiness and Sasuke’s trauma, he preferred Konoha and Shinobi World’s peace. That’s what Sasuke is doing now. 

Naruto works way more than any of his predecessors and sleeps in the office or couch so as not to disturb Hinata, when Hinata is specifically designed to accommodate anything that Naruto might require.

As for Naruto, 

I think it’s very funny. And I guess, I know why.

Just like Sasuke, Naruto is also a goal oriented person. 

Remember, in that Boruto movie, Sasuke knocks Naruto’s door at the midnight?

Imagine if Naruto opened the door. 

Sasuke will be like, ‘Alright mothafucka!!! I wanted to die in the VoTE itself. You wanted me in your dream world. Am working my ass off for your stupid dreams and trying to reach you without even meeting my own family. And yet here you are, sleeping well and sound. Am just gonna Chidori you!!!’ LOL.

I think you get my point. 

If you make Sasuke to be an hardworker, then Naruto must work even hard to fulfill his dream. So you possibly can’t have Naruto playing duet with Himata or whatever trash. 

So kishi pulled his Two birds, One Stone for NH here!!!

In short, Kishi gets to make his New generation shine through this pathetic sob stories and at the same time, kept his favorite characters without going OOC. 

So, it’s a polite way of Kishi showing middlefinger to SS and NH for making him do this. He is saying, ‘Alright folks, you wanted this all along. But this is what you will get!!!’.

Just makes me wonder how Kishi will finally conclude SNS, because their bond still shows clearly in Boruto. Do you think he will kill them any time soon?

I think about this all the time. How will they end?? How will they die??

Now, don’t think I am some sadist for wanting them to die. I am just being practical and honest here. This is a new generation series. Of course, at some point, Naruto and Sasuke has to die for the sake of character development. And I will be happy if they die because I don’t like their miserable portrayal in Boruto at all. 

Naruto series has a pattern when it comes to death portrayal. Meaningful characters (except Neji) always die protecting someone/something they cherish. Jiraiya died for Naruto, Yahiko died for Konan & Nagato, Itachi died for Sasuke & Konoha, Haku died for Zabuza, Obito (younger) died for Kakashi & Rin and so on.

Ever since Naruto became Hokage, his death is pretty much plastered on his head. He will die protecting Konoha just like all the Hokages from First to Fourth who sacrificed their life for Konoha. 

But Sasuke??? 

I am going to say he will die protecting Naruto or the village. But for Naruto mostly. Either way, Sasuke will die first. 

Dying for Naruto, the reasons are crystal clear. He already died protecting Naruto once in the Zabuza arc. He will never hesitate to do it again. Which was evident from the way he told Naruto in the Boruto movie while giving his Susanoo, ‘If they capture the real you, then everything is gone’. Somewhere in Boruto Manga chapter 38 (I don’t remember properly), Sasuke was yelling at Naruto, ‘If you are gone, it’s pretty hopeless’ and was praying ‘Naruto, don’t you die’. 

So it’s pretty much Sasuke saying to Naruto, ‘I’ll protect you, You protect everyone’

But why the village?? Why will Sasuke die for Konoha which caused him so much pain?? I know anti-konoha stans wont like this, but that’s the reality.

It seems many Sasuke fans never paid attention to his character. After hearing the story from all the Hokages, Sasuke said, ‘I will not let Itachi’s life and this village into nothing’. He really meant it. Because for Sasuke, Itachi was more precious. Itachi died saying, ‘I’ll have protected my village as Uchiha Itachi of Konoha once again. I have no more regrets’. Sasuke wanted to respect his brother’s wish finally and that’s why he openly claimed in the battlefield, ‘I am going to protect Konoha and become it’s Hokage’. Sasuke’s another precious person is Naruto. He is the Hokage now. 

Don’t you think Sasuke will die protecting something Itachi and Naruto values so much??

He even claimed it openly in Boruto Manga. ‘I would die anytime for Konoha, as has your dad (Naruto)’

Sasuke even said to Boruto, “I will stop you even if I have to kill you”. And do you think Sasuke is just pouring out some empty words??? Sasuke will not let Boruto to turn into an Otsutsuki monster and destroy the village.

Like I said, Sasuke will go out first. And eventually Naruto will follow him. Or they both die protecting the village together. I don’t see them dying for their wives or children. Because, their relationship with their family is not too strong and their ambitions are far beyond their own families.

Maybe for this reason, Kishi is trolling NH and SS in Boruto. LOL.

I have a question.

Is there a difference for you in terms of properly representing a selective group of people, whether that be race, ethnicity, identity and sexuality V.S. Survivors are of trauma, assault, psychological damage, mental illness and otherwise?

I know that you don’t mind people who romanticize dark events like rape, Stockholm syndrome or like incest (I’m not sure about that last one)Like do you not mind when people romanize rape or racism?

For me personally. I don’t mind people writing about dark elements of society. That is because it brings awareness to these serious issues in our society. I’m not so sure though about painting them in rose colored lenses or portraying it as something that is good. (Unless it usually from the victim’s warped perception)

I think a lot of things are interesting. Like your own stories. To me they don’t give out a message. Like yes this is an amazing relationship go do the same thing or this is something you should look for in a relationship/person! But some of the stories that are darker and portray like pedophilia and rape make it seem like ‘oh they really wanted it’ or ‘it’s okay, it’s not that bad’

I think those are dangerous messages to give out. Whether to children or adults. Because there is a thing like when you start off by put off by it, but the more you read things like that the more accustom to it and it becomes not as bad as a thing. Ya know.

That’s how like a lot of serial killers, rapists and other people start on the path to do those horrible things. It’s because they become accustomed to the message that it’s alright to do what they want.

Sorry for the long ask. But just wanted to ask your opinion on the matter because I see both sides of the argument and I want to find a middle ground. Ya know.

Hello! This will get a bit long, but I’d like to start with asking everyone: please don’t send me asks about the morality of fiction. While I can write essays on it, it’s not the topic that interests me and I don’t want to spend my time on it, no matter how genuine and respectful you are. I’m going to say everything I think about this subject in this reply, and that’s it.

Anon: I indeed don't mind romanization of such things as rape, age difference, incest, violence, and so on in fiction. These kinds of stories exist for adults only, and it's expected that adults can tell the right from wrong without having everything spelled out for them. In an ideal world, children shouldn't have access to fiction like this, but they are curious and easily bypass restrictions. In this case, the responsibility is on them and/or their parents. When I was about 11, I discovered the world of fanfiction. There were no tags then, and I readily clicked on "I'm 18" warnings to read the content I wanted. Some of it affected me badly - I still vividly remember the story where my favorite character was graphically raped, and it left me terrified and upset. With time, I learned how to recognize and filter such content, and it's especially easy now, when tagging has become commonplace.

There are indeed stories that portray very problematic things in a fluffy and positive way, though I'd say they are a minority. I read *a lot* of stuff and I probably saw just a few of them over my whole life. Even then, though, it is expected that adults read such content. And adults, along with most teenagers, won't decide that if one or even ten stories showed a fucked up relationship very positively, then it must be a good thing in real life. People are surrounded by parents, relatives, friends and their families, classmates, folks on the streets: this influence is far more profound than a story they might have read.  

Fiction can reflect the society, but it doesn't direct it. Every day, we see the normalization of smoking, drinking, toxic masculinity, heteronormativity, and racism in movies, TV shows, cartoons, etc. But they are there because the society is like this. These things existed long before fiction as we know it started developing. At the same time, murders aren't normalized in the society at all no matter how many action, thriller, and horror movies we all see. And murders are shown much more often than incest, minor/adults, and abuse portrayed in positive light. So if nothing happened with the former, nothing will definitely happen with the latter. 

Fiction can indeed have a small positive impact by normalizing things like equality. For example, it's natural for random female characters to kiss a male character. It's present even in 'Hannibal', where Chiyoh kisses Will and Bedelia kisses Hannibal out of blue, with nothing to really justify it. But it's almost unheard of male characters to do the same: if they do kiss other male characters randomly, it's usually within the "ewww, gross!" joking context. If things were to change, as they are slowly doing, if characters were allowed to interact equally regardless of their gender, then it could make an impact on the society. But fiction alone could never be responsible for it: same-sex marriages are being legalized. Punishments for homophobia start being enhanced. There are changes happening in the real world, and fiction is just a nice addition that helps solidify them.

There should be more diversity and more representation in fiction because it could aid in the positive practices that are already happening. But no matter how many stories feature romantization of violence, it's not and won't be accepted in the society because people have a general understanding of what is right and what is wrong.

There is also a big difference between fandom content and mainstream content. Someone's fanfic about romantic rape won't re-write the morals of a person. It's a work published for free and you can never guess what motivated the writer to create it. Mainstream fiction, on the other hand, is expected to show a little more care because millions are being poured into it and it has a far wider reach. POC and LGBTQ people already suffer from discrimination. If fiction further contributes to it, it's bad. If it chooses to contribute to the positive changes that take place, it's great. But everything still and always goes back to the real world.  

Finally, serial killers don't become killers because they saw a message about it being okay in fiction. They were already fucked up and considering it, and they just wanted to find a justification. What you see in real life has a far bigger influence than anything you experience in fiction, and the numbers don't change. It's been decades from the moment violence started being glamourized, and the majority of population don't think it's okay to beat someone up. 80% of women have rape fantasies, but most people don't think they actually want to be raped. The same principle applies to every type of fiction out there. People with unstable minds, people who cannot differentiate between the real and the made-up, people who are easily triggered by dark material should not be consuming fiction of this type. If they do, the fault for that doesn’t fall on the shoulders of the creator, just like it cannot fall on producer of peanut cookies if a person with peanut allergy decided to eat them.

Armie Hammer wants a sequel to The Man From U.N.C.L.E.—shouldn’t you?

This post is a long time in coming, Gentle Readers and @jammeke​, but now, though it might be here, before your very eyes, to think it will be well-laid out would be a mistake. It’s set to be just about as messy as Ilya’s misplaced loyalties and murky motivations.

I probably first watched this film well over a year ago (courtesy @jammeke​ posting things about it). I used Sling OnDemand (I think on TNT). In the ensuing viewings I also watched it in that way, but as I was sitting down for a fourth(?) viewing, it kept coming to me that I was tired of watching it with commercials I couldn’t skip, and I had a sneaking suspicion that it had been edited for time and I was missing out on scenes. [pointless aside: I was also watching the film in chunks, and never as a whole]

Where is she now? What’s the time stamp? How far along did she get? Are you shagging the hotel hostess yet?

So, I, uh, set out to buy it on DVD—without any luck! In the sense that copies I could find cost more (w/ shipping) than buying it to stream. So, I bought it to stream on Amazon. Do I regret my choice, Gentle Readers? No, no I don’t. I do regret burden of knowledge in learning that TNT was already playing the entirety of the film. That was a hard pill to swallow.

Nope, I’ve looked. That’s absolutely everything. Nothing additional lurking around here...

So here it is, as it is, @jammeke, “My Notes on The Man from U.N.C.L.E.”

Look, I don’t know what this film is. I probably can’t fully articulate its appeal. Or maybe I can--certainly after transcribing four page I’ve tried. Number One thing to know about me and fiction/films is that a top draw for me is seeing something out of the ordinary, such as beautiful locations, a historical era, delicious costumes. There are times, frankly, this can trump weak story and undefined character for me. (The best films, of course, combine all three) Certainly, The Man... delivers in the delight of the eyes. Additionally, I must confess that growing up as a person older than @reblogginhood​ but younger than Miss Fisher, so much of what was on TV was essentially reruns of this film’s iconic Look(tm). So, when I see women dressed like Gaby I am just another three-to-seven-year-old overcome with the drop dead glamour of it all.

Darling, tell me how you really feel...

Some questions I have:

·         IS Armie Hammer a hulk of a man? Everyone in this film seems to think so, yet he always tracks to me as trim (rather than hulking)

·         Why translate via captions some Russian speaking, but not all?

·         IS Napoleon’s backstory directly cribbed from USA’s White Collar?

·         DOES Gaby have a German accent?

·         Does Ilya get preternaturally attached to all the people he’s ordered to look after? Also, what is his bonding rate with kittens?

Sorry, wrong iteration. 

 ·         If Lady Villain knows the lens is wrong—if her technical understanding is that in-depth--does she really need Gaby’s dad to make the bomb?

·         How old was Gaby during the war?

·         What happens when Ilya gets a NEW puppy assigned to him? (please let this be addressed in film #2)

Hooray for:

·         That bathroom fight! *all the Burn Notice feels!

·         Gaby is her own lady, and chooses sides as necessary—not always unilateral in her support for either male character. Case in point: she sides with Ilya over the clothes, and Napoleon over the incident of the wallet.

·         That delicious (speaking as Rusty, here) Ocean’s 11-stylized action. It’s pretty, so I’m not bored with it. Sometimes a sandwiched montage gets shown, so I’m REALLY not bored. I’ve got 18 tiny moving boxes of things to look at!

·         Pinkie rings. There, you’ve told me everything I need to know about that character.

·         Solo in a beret. English has not yet found a word for the feeling it evoked in this viewer. Somewhere between ‘precious’ and ‘oh, no’.

See, there? Now you’ve felt it too.

·         Goggles! All the accessories! Dune Buggies! (I mean, that’s what I’m calling Napoleon’s chase-scene ride)

Things I adore:

·         It seems (after some research) that more than a few folks view Gaby as a third wheel, and though she’s not exactly a Princess Leia commandeering her own rescue and exuding competence and a deserved take-charge-attitude at every corner, she IS a foci for both male characters (though romantically it would seem only for one), just as Ilya is a foci for both her and Napoleon [no one seems to worry about Napoleon, though they should--film #2, anyone?]

·         Mechanic Gaby not needing a beauty makeover, or being dragged into one. She gets some nice clothes, but it’s never suggested that she’s not attractive or acceptable before putting them on, and I respect, nay, embrace it.

Oh, my heart. She’s still not as tall as them!

·         Ilya, drab pigeon Ilya, knowing fashion

·         Oh man, don’t even get me started on the power of the statement, “it doesn’t have to match”

·         You knew it was coming on this sublist: the wrestle-fight. I mean, c’mon. Poor little Gaby, locked behind the Iron Curtain, living a life of always being watched. She’s in the swankest hotel (I mean, Napoleon chose it, so we can be sure it’s swank with an E). She’s trying to celebrate her freedom, her liberation. She’s playing verboten music, she’s drinking to excess. Girl wants—and deserves—a party. And Ilya is…not built for that (that he knows of). For some fun, just imagine if she had been given Napoleon to room with instead.

                            o   I will say that this scene, and some of their other interactions have what I would call early (non-sibling) Luke and Leia energy. Ilya seems to have moments of being struck by Gaby in a way Luke is struck by Leia in the early part of the trilogy. When Leia takes charge, and Luke accepts it. When Leia does something incredible, and Luke is left open-mouthed. *no, I don’t see OT Star Wars in everything. Shut up.

·         “He fixed the glitch.”

·         Again, shout-out to the non-action action.

·         “I left my jacket in there.”

·         The whole race to rescue Gaby I am in love with beyond words. [I have noted it as “Crazy Jeep Drive with Warhead!”] Probably b/c it comes across as totally egalitarian. Both men want her rescued. They’re no longer in competition. It’s just as important to Napoleon as it is to Ilya to catch up to her. Also, it is bonkers, like some sort of X-games version of a commercial for the vehicles they’re driving. And screaming Willie Scott does not make an appearance.

         Someone says “winkle” out.

·         Look! Another note about the screen divisions and how I love it, shout-outs to the original Steve McQueen The Thomas Crown Affair (a contemporary of when this movie is meant to be set), and TV’s 24.

Things that get a great, big NOPE:

·         Jerrod Harris: you’ve been in so much streamable content in the last decade I can’t hate you, but frankly, you’re terrible here—unless you’re supposed to be giving a mannered, not-campy-enough-to-be-enjoyable performance here. Your American English puts me in the mind of Alex Hawaii 5-0′Loughlin where it feels you’re concentrating so hard on your accent that you fail to convince anyone that you’re a harried, over-worked and exasperated spy handler. Your performance is at odds with every bit of dialogue you’re given to say.

·         That awful, mishandled title that doesn’t even connect to the film until the final moments (a sequel set-up, for sure)

·         Look, you don’t introduce Hugh Grant casually mid-way through your film in a throwaway appearance. I mean, he’s HUGH GRANT we all know something’s up now.

·         This is not exactly a great big NOPE, b/c I love a flat cap, Tommy Shelby—but I feel like a less tall man with a far rounder face in a flat cap would track more as Russian to me that AH does. To me, he just looks like he’s about to go golfing.

Over par? Unacceptable!

·         Is Victoria a British-accented Italian? A British woman who married—what? Gaby’s uncle isn’t Italian!? An Italian who went to school in Britain? My head hurts. Also, is her hair meant to be unconvincingly bleached?

Other commentary:

·         Napoleon’s adult ne’er-do-well backstory is so far from being emotionally equivalent to Ilya’s childhood trauma [and his enslavement to the USSR] it seems bestial when he calls it out on multiple occasions. Badly done, Solo.

·         Gaby is the film’s key (sorry, Buffy fans). Everyone is connected to her. Yes, she could have been given a bit more on the character front, but I don’t see her as as much of a flaw in the film as some others/reviewers seem to.

·         Look, essentially (and not very nuanced-ly), Ilya is a stalker. I think the film goes a certain distance in establishing that his early behavior toward Gaby is not normal, but concurrently it does not truly call him out on it. He’s essentially viewed as an odd-duck, sure, but not a true threat to her (should she not reciprocate or tolerate his intensity toward her). I think I might be able to cite his behavior when Gaby comes on to him (that he doesn’t jump at a chance with her) that maybe he’s given a little more nuance than a straight-on stalker, and it helps that he and Napoleon never get into a pissing match over Gaby’s person, only over her new clothes. But overall the film has to walk a fine line (and the jury is still out on how successful it is, I’d say) between playing Ilya’s laser-like attention to Gaby for its humor, and calling it out for the unsettling, threatening behavior it is.

·         Honestly, it wasn’t until I engaged the Closed Captioning that I understood Napoleon was calling Ilya the ‘Red Peril’. So, that was nearly three viewings in.

·         I give the screen credits A+, on both ends. Not to mention the end credits are actually INTERESTING with lots to see and learn! (Certainly we learn more about HG in them than we do at any time during the film)

Things I would have liked:

·         More of fish-out-of-the-Iron-Curtain Gaby moments

·         A better dichotomy shown of East vs. West Berlin/Germany. There’s nothing easy either visually or otherwise to distinguish the two.

·         HC being given a more specific American accent (from an actual locality). This, for an American viewer, works better than the flat, unlocated American accent many a British actor will bust out. *Mind you, HC does a generally good job, but he fails utterly on both “Immediate” which he pronounces at least twice as “immeedeejt” [rather than imm-E-deeot] and “Nazi” as “NAHT-zee” [rather than “NOT-zee”]. And let’s not get started on that late in the film use of ‘earnt’, a word that—well, it’s just not in the American English twentieth century lexicon.

·         C’mon. You gotta tease the Hugh Grant more.

·         Solo is a blank before the war. I’ve read thoughts on the film calling out Gaby as the blank character, but they’re wrong. Solo is the blank. He’s the ‘made’ man, his identity seemingly assembled during the war and after. For example, he doesn’t go into the war a thief, nor (it would seem) a particularly educated or urbane individual. Now THAT’s a juicy backstory I’d love to learn about, perhaps in film #2--or #3? What creates a Napoleon Solo? What would he be doing if he weren’t on the government’s leash/incarcerated? Is anyone left caring about him back wherever he calls home? I mean, who doesn’t love a gender-flipped 60s-era Holly Golightly backstory? [And yes, I would love there to be an ex-wife or even a current wife mixed up in his origins as well—Guy Ritchie, call me!]

Notes I have that I’m not sure if they still make sense to me:

·         Only mom calls me Napoleon (do he say it ‘mum’?) Is he a secret Canadian?

·         Solo’s torture, 1st view recall Napoleon’s childhood? *I think this means that after watching the first time I somehow erroneously believed that during the torture Napoleon’s childhood was a topic gone over. This was wrong. HOWEVER, this would have made far more story-sense than the backstory we’re given on an easily disposeable villain.

·         “Even the average Russian agent. You’re special.” ?

·         Uncle is Baddie (*so glad I made this note to myself)

·         Ilya’s dad IS an embarrassment. I’m not sure what genius commentary I had in my mind, here. Perhaps that Ilya himself is embarrassed of him? Not just Ilya’s handler’s? [Also, aside: Napoleon totally slut-shames Ilya’s mom, which is the doublest of double standards from ‘I got myself the biggest and most ornate suite b/c I-wanted-plenty-of-space-for-my-random-seductions’ and I really wish Ilya had thrown that back in his face] *yes, of course I know that Ilya and Napoleon would not likely equate a wife/mother’s sexual exploits with that of Solo’s, but let’s be honest, this film tweaks the nose of (I won’t say reverses, it doesn’t go that far) plenty of tropes and gender expectations, and this certainly seems like a missed opportunity to call Solo on the carpet (which I hope film #2 does far more)

What does film #2 look like? What title does it get? Will the Peter/Neil White Collar dynamic continue to grow? *note that I have no confidence a second film will ever come to pass...

In the end, all I know is, “It didn't help when American Tom Cruise, who was slated to play U.S. spy Napoleon Solo, dropped out, prompting the casting of Cavill (who had previously read for the Russian role).“ I would not have watched that film.

Alright, I think i’m done BOTW 2 spamming for today. Anywho, time for some thoughts in general!

1) I hated how the shrines in BOTW were so cold and dark compared to the bright and lively nature outside (I wish they had all looked like the Master Trials challenge where there were trees and stuff incorporated inside), so I hope if we’re forced to have dungeons they’ll be more like the Wind Waker ones. 2) I hope they don’t make us use the grappling hook or anything like in Wind Waker to move around the sky islands (I hated that mechanic). 3) I’m probably one of the few people who wanted less Zelda and more of the Champions in HWAOC since i’m only really attached to BOTW (and we saw a fair amount of Tetra in Wind Waker)/apparently Zelda’s been sidelined in all the other games, so i’m hoping in vain that we get more Champions material in BOTW 2. Also, Link could stand to have some more cutscenes centered around him as well (the few we got in some of the sidequests in BOTW were great). 4) I only really somewhat care about Riju and Sidon, so I won’t mind if the new gang gets sidelined in BOTW 2 (I still think Nintendo wasted the found family/band of brothers aspect on the dead characters--I love them so much and they’re all I want!! The problem is, they’re dead and I don’t really care all that much about their replacements!!! I dunno, maybe i’m hampered by the fact that I can replay the original champions’ memories whenever I want/read their diaries, but I can’t rewatch the new gang’s cutscenes AKA i’ve forgotten their characterization since they don’t talk to me much now that the game’s over). It’d be great if they have some weaving storylines in BOTW 2 that will get me more invested in them, but currently i’m not that interested. 5) Speaking of which, I know it’s 100% not going to happen, but goddang if I don’t want the Champions to have been returned to life. Nintendo totally squandered HWAOC by not making it a true prequel/canon to BOTW (the Champions Ballad confirmed that the Divine Beasts had trials in order to be synced to the champs, so the new gen use of them wouldn’t have happened without that + Mipha thought Link had changed in BOTW yet says in HWAOC that he hasn’t changed + some scenes like “Champion Revali’s Song” never happened at all/got replaced with alternative scenes that really changed some dynamics + basically all of Revali’s time-relative characterization from his diary/pre-100 years of solitude got thrown out + I feel like Daruk got totally sidelined), so i’m still craving that Champions content. Also, I feel like it’s totally unfair that Zelda came out of 100 years totally unaged while everyone else died. Life seems to really suck for people in the LoZ universe who aren’t chosen by divine powers. 6) They’d better keep it open world and non-linear. I can’t go back to being forced to backtrack/trudge through things, I just can’t. BOTW was everything i’ve ever dreamed about in a game (truly open world + non-linear + interactive + meaningful story + lots of outfits + beautiful landscapes) with Skyrim previously being the only thing that came close to what I wanted, so I really hope BOTW 2 doesn’t deviate too much from that. 7) I really liked Kass in BOTW, but i’m not sure what direction they’d go with him in BOTW 2/i’d be fine if he sat BOTW 2 out. I worked so hard to complete all his quests in BOTW so he’d go back home to his family, GODDANGIT, KASS. 8) Someone mentioned that since the first trailer had underground aspects, we’re probably going to be playing as Zelda with the Slate there, and I agree. They didn’t make a playable model for her in HWAOC for nothing. 9) I want to be able to stable the deer and bears and stuff, but I know that won’t happen. Being able to ride the moose and rhino things from the Hebra area probably won’t happen either, but I want to ride them!!! 10) I hope there’ll be at least a few new buildings and stuff in the towns/they’ve started construction on some areas in Central Hyrule, but I guess that’ll depend on how long it’s been in-universe since BOTW. Or maybe not, considering how there’s still Karson and Hudson even though Bolson retired from Bolson Construction--insta-towns like Tarrey Town could totally be feasible if they wanted! 11) I have one foot in the camp that believes there’ll be time shenanigans in BOTW 2. HWAOC totally threw me off with it being an alternate timeline, so i’m not sure whether we’re going to be experiencing that again or time travel itself, but I definitely won’t be surprised this time around if Nintendo goes that route again (and it would be super interesting to see the Link from 10,000 years ago). I’m not entirely convinced that the Link we see exploring the sky in the second trailer isn’t our Link, mainly because he seems to still have on the blue boxers from BOTW. 12) I also heard that maybe this will be the last LoZ game ever since something something Demise something Skyward Sword something something lore from games i’ve only vaguely looked into (i’ve only ever played BOTW --> Wind Waker --> HWAOC)??? If so, it kind of sucks that I came in just when they started making games with playstyles palatable to me (I had to look up every single thing when playing Wind Waker, but BOTW let me solve things according to MY logic/I missed being able to explore in HWAOC), but at least it’ll end on a super high note/I won’t experience later disappointment, I guess. If BOTW 2 involves breaking the reincarnation cycle for the Triforcers, I would be really surprised. (On a related note, Nintendo making Ganondorf good would also be a 100% shock to me, but it would be great to end on that as a subversion. Yes, I want them to bring back the semi-complicated Ganondorf from Wind Waker.) 13) I hope they don’t rush releasing it. I heard they pushed back BOTW originally (I got it in 2019), but it came out fantastic for it! I know COVID’s been affecting things, so I really hope they’re treating their staff right and are mindful of crunch. 14) I want even more outfits (there seem to be at least two new ones, if the variant of the Hylian Tunic crossed with Link’s Champion’s Tunic counts). Give me all the outfits!!! Also, I hope we get even more hair variations in addition to the hair down option (which is all i’ve ever wanted since I saw the mod that altered the Ancient Helmet). 15) I wonder if we’re going to get a bonus for having both BOTW and HWAOC save data. 16) I wonder if we’re going to be keeping the Champions’ skills. I’m going to miss being super overpowered, if not. 17) I hope Nintendo doesn’t cave in and make surfaces climbable in the rain. Having that limiter is more realistic and Link would otherwise be too overpowered with a super climbing ability. 18) I liked BOTW’s scattered music that got more noticeable in populated areas because it was fitting for the post-apocalyptical/nature aspect. Hearing your footsteps in an open field and the buzzing of insects was super nice and prevented me from getting music fatigue (which i’d probably experience since whenever I play BOTW it’s for 5-10 hours at a time). I hope Nintendo either keeps that or makes audio options. 19) I heard that BOTW 2 is going to be super dark or something, and i’m okay with dark, but not GRIMdark, so I hope it doesn’t go that far. From what we’ve seen in the second trailer it still looks beautiful, but I hope it doesn’t do that thing that some games do where after the midpoint/a certain story point all the scenery permanently changes to be dark and scary (that’ll seriously hamper post-game playability for me if so). 20) If they expand on the Zonai, that would be super cool! Doubly cool if the time travel shenanigans involve them/ancient Link being one! 21) I kind of want windstorms to be a weather feature. We had lightning, heat, and cold, but no wind! No, I don’t count the wind geysers and the occasional breeze in Tabantha. 22) I want a chest in my house to hold more weapons than just the gear mounts. BOTW only had enough mounts for the champions’ gear, but it also had rare items like the Kite Shield and Forest Dweller’s Sword that you can’t get anymore once you use them up! 23) I want to be able to stable my horses at my house. What’s the point of that little area if you can’t stable your horse there! 24) Speaking of Link’s house: where is Zelda going to live? If the castle’s not reconstructed, it’d be neat if Link adds an extension to his house for her. 25) I hope they open up part-time jobs (think Mabinogi) as an option to earn rupees. Having to hunt for Luminous Stone deposits or feed Trott to make money can be such a chore. I think some of BOTW’s minigames/sidequests might count as those, but those minigames were either frustrating if your goal is to earn money (since most of them cost money to play in the first place and the mechanics weren’t always easy), or didn’t earn that much in general. 26) I wonder if Kilton is going to have updated items since the monsters seem to have changed. 27) I want to be able to dive underwater (mainly so I can explore the beautiful reefs over at Lurelin). A dive meter like the one from Super Mario Sunshine would be cool. Also, it’d doubly be neat if you had a separate stamina wheel for swimming and could permanently upgrade your swim/diving stamina (the speed+ swimming items just consumed your stamina faster, which was a pain)! 28) It’s definitely too late for this, but it’s a shame that the Hylians have so many face/body/hair and outfit variations, but the Zora, Rito, and Gorons don’t. The Gerudo were kind of okay with the hair and body variations, but the other races seemed to have a serious copy-paste problem. I guess technically some of the more important NPCs (ones with quests/cutscene triggers) had different coloring, but they were severely lacking in clothing variation. Also, the only old Rito was the elder??? At least the Gorons and Zora had some old folks besides their leader walking around. Very weird, but I don’t think BOTW 2 can fix any of this. 29) I wonder how they’re going to do the final boss battle, considering how epic/cinematic the BOTW 2x battle was. What can top fighting (on horseback, no less) a giant, flaming boar made out of malice? 30) I wonder what the Yiga are going to be up to, considering how Ganondorf seems to be somewhat kicking in BOTW 2.

Can I be nosey about your OT6? I know they're from HTTYD right? Which I haven't seen so feel free to be detailed! My first question is are they all on equal footing or are some just friends? Any grudgingly accepting dynamics? Anyone considered another's primary?

Sure! 

This is quite long because I got detailed and I like talking about my ship so... under read more.

Yeah, my ship is from HTTYD. They’ve known each other all their lives because they’re from the same island village, with two of them knowing each other since the womb. In the franchise, the six of them become a team because Hiccup looked at a beautiful dragon and saw himself and decided, yeah, we’re gonna be Dragon Riders and fight for dragons and stop Vikings from being jerks to Dragons. They literally call themselves Dragon Riders and are very proprietary about that term. The six of them are: Hiccup, Astrid, Fishlegs, Snotlout, Ruffnut, and Tuffnut. Ruff and Tuff are a set of fraternal twins, but within my ship, my preference is pretty clear: they only share partners, there’s no twincest. Also within the books (different from the DWA franchise, but the franchise is based on them but... diverged a bit), Snotlout and Hiccup are cousins, but I don’t consider them cousins in the franchise (plus in almost a decade of the franchise, there’s been nothing of the sort mentioned, so…). 

Now, within canon (not just me playing with canon, and fanworks and all that), technically, that’s all they are, friends/teammates, and two of them (Hiccup and Astrid, which is like, the main romantic pairing of the franchise) do marry and have kids. A hookup for Ruffnut and Fishlegs and as well as Snotlout and Tuffnut is implied at the end of the third movie, so… I guess it is canon in a way. Plus, in another scene in the franchise canon, in the tv series, Astrid tells four of them that “Where Hiccup goes, we go” and THEY FALL IN LINE real quick. (And they really do abide by that “Where Hiccup goes, we go”. They’re very devoted to him.) 

So, ultimately, me shipping this ship is a result of having seen the tv series, in particular the Race to the Edge seasons… well… my shipping of them started with the first season of that in summer 2015, but escalated as time went by, until I finally became really out with it in early 2017. So, I’ve been shipping this for four of the six years I’ve been a fan. I saw how they interacted (they touch each other, they call each other pretty, Snotlout openly crushes on a version of Fishlegs, their lack of personal space, they live together), and was like… yeah, I ship this. But yeah… as I noted, I was quiet about it for like, 18 months because I’m pretty anxious on my own but Tumblr is hell. I figured folks would react badly for a number of reasons. (Though, I was surprised how supportive folks were!)

Now within my OT6, as I noted above, there’s a set of twins in it, and they are just friends/siblings, who happen to share four partners. So, yeah there’s some folks within my ship who are just friends, but otherwise, everyone else is together. 

Regarding the question of primaries, I think that if there was one, it’d be Hiccup and Astrid, because I like to align myself with canon, and because for one, there was an episode of the tv series, where the two of them sort of focused on themselves-as-a-couple and they got called out by their friends for doing so. So, I could easily see that being something the OT6 would have to deal with. Plus, it’s easy to see given how much Hiccup relies on Astrid within canon that even in the context of a poly relationship, she would be his primary. Now do I focus on them much? Nah. With fanworks and canon providing a large amount of material for that specific relationship in general, I don’t really feel the need to. (So I guess this paragraph sort of answers the dynamics question.)

Though, I’d also like to note that I tend not to think about the primary/secondary concept within the context of my OT6. I could see it being possible depending on how I choose to interact with canon in the context of my fanworks, but I think overall, I tend to lean towards, that’s not a concept they concern themselves with. Plus, I could easily see Hiccup shying away from such an idea.

So within my own works, I tend to focus on other characters/smaller ships within the ship as a whole (mostly because it’s easier to deal with a couple of characters than six, when writing), and usually, ones that involve Hiccup because he’s my favorite character of them all (though, yes, I love them all), and I feel like he’s the linchpin to their group.

I also do see them as practicing polyfidelity. Like, there’s a scene in the tv series where the topic of adding a 7th person to their Dragon Rider group comes up, and Hiccup is like, okay, we’ll invite her to stay for a bit, “But nothing permanent happens without us all agreeing.” 

Also! There’s a scene in the tv series where Snotlout outright says that the twins are a package deal, and I essentially take that to mean that whoever wants to be in a relationship with either Ruff or Tuff, kind of has to be with both of them, and for them this relationship would work, because they get to be together in their sibling way and be with four partners who love them.

Anna is NOT going to be pregnant in Frozen 2

This has been a popular theory going around because of the mom-hair connection, but guys...unless this was a serious time skip or Disney was going crazy it’s NOT going to happen, for three main reasons.

ANNA IS 18 WHEN FROZEN ENDS. This would mean, even if it’s like 3 years later, she would still be college age. I really don’t think Disney would let the main character of their most financially lucrative franchise become pregnant that young. Not only would it likely piss of MANY parents, but it makes Anna a lot less accessible to the target demographic. It’s been 5/6 years since Frozen came out. That’s a long time! But not THAT long. The 6-10 year olds that made Frozen so successful are STILL KIDS. Older kids, sure, but still kids. They don’t necessarily want to see Anna’s first real big adventure outside of Arrendale be bogged down by morning sickness. It also eliminates the possibility for any further sequels that wouldn’t at least partially focus on Anna being a young mother. Because if 20 year old Anna goes off on adventures to fight badguys and discover magic and all that while leaving her 2 year old at home with Kristoff, some parents are going to be PISSED.

COLLEGE AGE ANNA WOULD BE PREGNANT OUT OF WEDLOCK!! To have this plot work we would either need to completely skip Anna and Kristoff’s wedding entirely, including all of the development that took place in their relationship that led them to thinking they were ready for marriage (one of the huge themes of the first movie), OR Disney is going to have Anna, the star of their most lucrative and popular franchise, GET PREGNANT BEFORE SHE GETS MARRIED. Which Disney...would not do. If it was the plot of it’s own totally original movie, maaayyyybeeee. But they wouldn’t just throw that plot into Frozen, ESPECIALLY with the cast and crew actively pushing Disney to let them make Elsa gay. ESPECIALLY especially in a movie where there’s going to be even MORE focus on Anna and Elsa’s relationship. Remember, the Let It Go of Frozen 2 has been confirmed to be a duet between Anna and Elsa. That means the two characters who are most involved in the pregnant plot (because that can’t really be a removed B plot) are Anna and ELSA, not Anna and Kristoff. Even if Anna keeps it a secret from Elsa, the focus is still on what Anna thinks ELSA would feel about her pregnancy. With the ‘lesbian incest sisters’ thing still big in the 1 Million Moms crowd, the crew and cast of a movie WHO WANT ELSA TO BE GAY/BI would NOT risk feeding into that whole mess.

IT LIMITS THE ADVENTURE/COMEDY POTENTIAL. Yes, there’s a lot of story and drama potential in this idea, but it also means that Anna can’t get seriously injured. Anna, the super slapsticky, impulsive, charge into danger for the ones she loves main character constantly surrounded by super dangerous and fairly volatile magic CAN’T GET HURT. Every time she falls off of a ledge, or gets hit by a blast of magic, or rushes in front of a bad guy to protect someone, the first thought will ALWAYS have to be the baby. She literally CAN’T put herself in harm’s way for the people she cares about while pregnant. To a lot of parents (and even some kids), that won’t be seen as brave or selfless anymore, that would be seen as prioritizing the life of her sister or husband over her child. The only way to circumnavigate this is by Anna shoeing that she believes the lives of others alive around her are more important to her than the potential for a life that rests in her first trimester pregnancy, but Disney would...NOOOOOOOOT DO THAT. Hahahaha, no. Or maybe they could have it be that Anna needs to learn to be more responsible with herself for the sake of her unborn child, but Jennifer Lee wouldn’t do that. She wouldn’t make Anna’s second film appearance be her learning that she can’t adventure and fight and explore the world like she dreamed of her whole life because she has to take care of a baby now. With an already born child, that’s not an issue. Because her doing all that fun stuff wouldn’t literally directly endanger the life of her kid every second. But with Anna still pregnant, that’s the message the above story arc conveys, even if Anna literally turns to the camera and says “This is only until my child is born and done breastfeeding. THEN I’ll do all that stuff you want to see again!”. And that brings me to...

4(B). WHAT HAPPENS TO ANNA’S PREGNANCY IF SHE GETS HIT WITH AN ICE BLAST. This is SUCH a glaringly obvious question that it literally cannot be glossed over without hurting the story. Anna getting hit by ice blasts is what makes the story and characters happen in the first movie. Without Anna getting hit by an ice blast, the plot doesn’t happen, and Anna and Elsa’s characters don’t happen. The fear of hurting Anna with her magic isn’t just going to disappear from Elsa’s character in Frozen 2. Which means that, no matter how the writers phrase it, at some point Elsa will have to worry that she might cause Anna to have a miscarriage because of her magic. And that is... You know, I like when Disney goes darker and more mature. I Ioved the addition of canonically suicidal Elsa in Frozen the Musical. But Disney, Jennifer Lee, Idina Menzel, please don’t make that a thing that happens in Frozen 2. Please. Please don’t make Elsa stress about causing her sister to have a miscarriage because of her neurodivergance metaphor. Please.

And that, folks, is why Pregnant Anna isn’t going to be a thing in Frozen 2. And...do we really want it to? There’s a LOT of great story potential in the idea of Anna having a child (especially if that child has magic), but not yet. This is only the second movie, and all of the leads are so young and sheltered. Having a baby, even just physically being pregnant, doesn’t mean you can’t adventure and grow anymore, but it is still a HUGE shift in your life, and makes it a lot harder to explore and adventure and heal from past traumas when you don’t have a solid foundation of life and experiences to help you transition. Maybe if Anna grew up in a band of traveling adventurers who interacted with hundreds of colorful characters and had tons of children and tasks Anna had to watch over from time to time, a baby at 19-21 would be fine for her. But she’s not. She’s a sheltered princess who didn’t leave her home from ages 6-18 and probably NEVER left her country, who has had one real romantic relationship, no real parental figures from 15 on, and is only just starting to rekindle a deep connection with her sister. She’s only beginning to understand herself and the world and complex interpersonal connections and having serious responsibility. Kristoff is a lot better with that stuff, but even so. We’ve also only seen literally FIVE DAYS of Anna and Kristoff’s relationship (3 in the movie, 1 in each special. I know the specials time skip but Anna and Kristoff only share a few lines in each and those lines are intentionally written so that you can watch Frozen 2 without having watched the shorts and missed basically nothing.). It doesn’t matter how much we time skip in the sequel, ‘show don’t tell’ is an important rule in cinema for a reason. If the audience didn’t see Kristoff and Anna go through huge character arks involving their relationship to get them to the point of being ready for a kid, it doesn’t matter how they act or what they say in the sequel, the audience won’t buy it. “You can’t marry a man you just met” transitions really easily to “You can’t have a kid with someone who’s last notable interaction with you was him asking for permission to kiss you for the first time after meeting for the first time and becoming a couple that week”. Let’s face it, if these characters existed in the real world, Anna, Kristoff, and Elsa would have a long sit down discussion about the pregnancy, ending with Anna deciding to get an abortion/give her child up for adoption. That’s where their characters all are right now. That would be the decision that implements the lessons Anna learned in the first movie. Why do we want a story where Anna learns to deal with something she would handle an entirely different way in the real world? The lessons in these movies are useless if they can’t be applied to the real world as it is now. The only way to circumnavigate this is if Anna and Kristoff we’re actively trying to have a child, but that wouldn’t happen period. Not ‘it wouldn’t happen in the real world’, it just wouldn’t happen. The whole message of the No Instant-Love plot was don’t rush headfirst into things you’re not ready for because you think it will bring you happiness based on the idealized fairytale version of it in your head. Anna and Kristoff (and Elsa, because it would affect her too) are not ready for a child right now. They wouldn’t make the choice to have a child right now, because they (especially Anna) learned that lesson the hard way. When Frozen 4 comes out, I’m all for some kids. But based on everything we know about Disney, the people working on Frozen 2, and the characters/story itself, Pregnant Anna will have to stay in AUs until then.

Chapter 1

“I’m new too!”

Davey pulls Les closer to him, they had talked about this before they left the house this morning. Davey was to do all the talking with the distributor. He’s not that surprised though that Les is already ignoring the plan - he has been excited to sell newspapers and be “A real Newsboy, Davey!” for days now.

“Hey, don’t worry kid!”

Davey’s head snaps to the boy talking, the same one who had tried to flirt his way into getting his newspapers just moments before. He’s smiling at Les and Davey notices that it’s a very nice smile. Before he can chastise himself for starring, the boy is talking again.

“It rubs right off.”

The boys smile falls and he rolls his eyes. And then suddenly all the boys around them are laughing. This is exactly what he is trying to avoid - drawing attention to themselves.

The plan was to keep their head down, sell their newspapers, and get home before it got to be too dark. If the looks they’re currently getting from the boys around them now are any indication, this plan is not working out so far.

Great. His parents were trusting him to do this and he was already failing.

After paying for his newspapers - before selling them! Which just seems unfair - he goes to count them while Les grabs their bags for the day.

‘16, 17, 18, 19…’

“Uh, excuse me? I paid for 20 newspapers, but you gave me 19.”

Apparently he’s said something wrong. Arguing breaks out, voices are rising, and some random boy is snatching his newspapers from his hands.

“I just want what I paid for.”

Some more arguing between this random boy and the distributor - Weasel, as the boy with the nice smile had called him - and Davey is being handed his newspapers back, all 20 of them.

Before he can get his bag situated and grab Les’ hand to get going, the random boy is speaking again. He’s trying to get them more newspapers. The random boy he soon learns is “The famous Jack Kelly” and is striking up a deal with Les to be partners for the day.

And just like that, all his plans go out the window. It seems him and Les will be selling with this Jack fellow and who knows how long it’s going to take to sell all the newspapers they now have between the three of them.

He also quickly learns that Jack has many tricks to selling. Tricks that Davey really doesn’t want Les to be learning, but he does have to admit they are selling their papers way sooner than he thought they would. The day is passing by fairly easily. Les has only gotten distracted a handful of times, Davey and Jack have only argued about tactics and morals a few more handfuls of times. Davey definitely doesn’t agree with the lying and how Jack goes about selling, but he does start to notice things throughout the day that make Jack seem to be more than just your every day con artist.

They cross paths with the other Newsboys throughout the day and every single time, Jack takes time to talk to each of the boys. Davey keeps to himself mostly and just observes as they discuss how the day is going and how much they have left to sell. Jack also always sends them on their way again with reassurance and encouragement. It’s actually nice to see how much he seems to care about the others.

Davey starts to recognize some of the other boys - at least the ones they run into a couple of times. There’s Crutchie, who he instantly likes, who jokes with Jack about being the “obviously better Newsie”. There’s Specs, who keeps checking in with how the others are doing as well and they seem to be the ones who take care of the others. And then there’s the boy with the nice smile…

Race.

What an odd name. Most of the newsies, he’s learning, go by some kind of nickname. They all seem pretty friendly, but Race especially. Every time they cross paths with him, which is quite often actually, Race is smiling and Davey finds himself starring. He can’t really put his finger on it, but there’s just something about him that Davey feels drawn to.

Weird.

He tries his best not to think too much about the boy with the nice smile as the day goes on, and he succeeds for the most part - he has work to do, after all. They are down to their last few papers for the day as the sun has just began to fall behind the buildings and Davey is exhausted and can’t wait to be finished. All he wants to do is get home, have supper, and maybe spend some time out on the fire escape to himself. Once he’s by himself, he’ll let his thoughts of the days wander. The hardship of working his first job, the ever-morally compromised Jack Kelly, and yes, even Race. The boy with the nice smile. Davey’s pretty sure he’s going to spend a lot of time tonight on that thought.

He's sorting out their money for the day - way more than he thought they'd be going home with - and explaining how they need to get home, and his heart sinks.

“Oh. You've got folks?”

He can tell Jack is trying to play it off as a casual question, but the look on his face just seems… broken.

“Doesn't… everyone?”

Oh, Les. So young. Even if he wanted to, how would he go about explaining that some people don't have parents or families at all? He looks at Jack again and he seems so uncomfortable. Inviting Jack home with them for dinner seemed like the right thing to do, but Jack is now making excuses and trying so hard to leave. Before Davey can say much else to ease the tension Jack is so obviously feeling, their night takes a surprising turn.

“Run for it!”

Allen’s Seinen Adventure

Well... it’s finally happening, I’m finally talking about Seinen manga like I said I would last month. This is my first time talking about manga specifically and tagging it, so... hello manga readers and fandom people reading this, as well as my usual followers that like these sorts of essay-type posts I do when I’m not shitposting about Blazblue. For those that don’t know, I’m Allen X, I post little essays about niche fandom stuff I’m into on tumblr called Ramblings, and every so often try to write stories and fanfics when the mood hits me. A month back I made a post saying I was going to talk about Seinen manga since I’ve reached that lovely age of 23 where theses types of manga would interest me given my age group. I’ve been buying more and more manga in this genre as of late and I wanted to give my thoughts on the ones that have grabbed my interest and why I like them.

In my last Rambling on this topic I said I was going to try and make separate essays for each Seinen manga I wanted to talk about, but... I can’t. I just can’t. I realized it when I talked about Symphogear, I really don’t feel comfortable breaking down manga and anime the way I do with video games. I don’t know, video games are more inclusive and universal than anime and manga. When I talk about video games, gameplay, enjoyment factor, and so on, I feel like I’m talking on a level that everyone would get, at least every gamer. With manga and anime... it’s kind of niche genre, especially the stuff I’m into, so to try and talk about them in the same manner of general appeal and interest just doesn’t feel right to me. Plus, God forbid I miss something super vital about an anime or manga from my western perspective and get roasted for not understanding something in context and harping on it... God, that’s a fear I have every time I tag a Rambling. 

In any case, I figured I’d do this in the style I do my Anime Updates. I’ll give a brief summary of each manga, say what I like about them, what I don’t, and if I think others should into it. So, let’s get started.

Oh actually, before I get started, just gonna’ warn everyone now that since I’m talking about Seinen manga, sexual content is bound for all that I talk about. I won’t be showing pics or anything, but just know these are +18 rated manga. Anyway, back on topic... 

So, first up is Murcielago. If I had to give this show a western comparison I’d say the show Archer would be a good one. Now, I’ve only seen bits of season 1 of Archer, but I think the idea is the same. Murcielago is about a State Appointed Executioner named Kuroko Koumori, a former serial killer turned government agent, and the adventures she goes on with her loli sidekick and driver Hinako as she kills, slaughters, and executes criminals just as, if not more, dangerous than she is, as well as attempt to bang every female without a two-mile radius. Actually, now that I think about I think Killer is Dead is better comparison for this manga. Now if only Kuroko gets voiced by Patrick Seitz if an anime comes out... 

I don’t know, there’s just something engaging about watching this sex-addicted, murderous lesbian go about her day. This is sort of a popcorn read, something wacky and ridiculous that just makes you laugh. The gore is over the top, the situations Kuroko gets into are just so nonsensical that you can’t help but laugh at them, and the way she gets out of jams and gives out cheesy one-liners just makes me think this manga is just a hyper-violent, hyper-sexual action movie with an sociopath protagonist. And I'm always cracking up a little when I see Hinako react to all the hyper-violence going on around her. The fact that Hinako is so innocent and carefree despite who she works with is actually pretty endearing. I like how she’s, for the most part, an innocent little loli just having to put up with all of Kuroko’s shit. I hope it remains a running gag that Hinako is at most just inconvenienced by all the violent, sexual nonsense around her and is never truly effected by it.

Like I said, this manga’s a popcorn read, and if you need some crazy, B-tier action movie nonsense in your manga collection, I recommend buying this when you can. The second volume is out and it concludes the Murder House arc. I’m looking forward to volume 3 and seeing where it goes from there.

And since I’m sticking this in the Murcielago tag, yes Murcielago Lamborghini fans, Kuroko does, in fact, drive Murcielago Lamborghini. Well, Hinako drives it specifically, crashes it every other chapter, and Kuroko buys her a new one in the following chapter... I hope that remains a running gag too.

Next up is Ubel Blatt, AKA, Not-Berserk. 

Now, before everyone tells me to stop reading this and start reading Berserk just hear me out. The main thing keeping me from reading Berserk is the fact that it’s currently on volume 38 here in the West, and I’m not sinking money into an on-going manga that’s ran that long. My personal rule for long-running manga is that if it exceeds past 18 volumes I either stop at 18 or whatever arc I feel is a good stopping point and wait until that manga finishes, or I have a damn good reason to pick it up again and sink all that money back into something that could get put on hiatus at a moment’s notice depending on that artist’s health and condition. Berserk... is just too risky an investment for me to get into, and Ubel Blatt’s plot is telling me that this manga’s gonna have a clear ending at some point, likely around the volume 15 mark, so I’m choosing this one for my edgy, medieval, violent story... thing. I was scrolling around the tags a bit for Ubel Blatt to get a consensus on this manga and saw a few people essentially calling this a poor man’s Berserk. Well folks, since I’m poor as hell I’ll glad sink money into what is currently at volume 10 and not play catch up with Berserk until it finishes.

Now, onto the manga itself,  I find Ubel Blatt interesting in that this series has a very clear goal and that main character is making clear strides in accomplishing that goal. The main character, Koinzell, simply wants to avenge himself and his fallen comrades after being betrayed by his former allies. It’s... basically an even edgier Tales of Beresia except with a half-fairy-elf man instead of Velvet Crow. The world is already saved, but the ones that were sacrificed for that end are less than happy about it and want revenge at the cost of screwing the stability of the world over again. I’m on volume 3 at this point and I’m pretty hooked. It really does remind me of Tales of Beresia with out they show the heroes being flawed and even devious, but the public love them regardless... well, those that aren’t being enslaved by their rule anyway. 

I especially like female lead, Aht. I’ve always like the warrior-princess archtype, and Aht is definitely winning me over with her loyalty toward Koinzell, even willing to change her body and appearance to help him in combat. My only regard about her is that we don’t get to see her in that badass black dragon rider armor she was wearing in the first few volumes when she was going to try and kill Koinzell for killing her brother. That armor just hit all my aesthetics for warrior princesses... but alas, I still like her though. 

I believe this manga is up to volume 10 here in the States. Now I say 10, but it’s numbered 9... for some inane reason there’s volume 0 that is not a prologue volume, so please read, as it is mandatory to understand the plot... it’s the one thing I’m gonna’ knock about this manga, but it’s a good read so far. Looking forward to getting the rest on payday.

Alright, time to talk about a manga I’ve been reading exclusively online for awhile now. As of this point I know the light novel of Goblin Slayer is out in the West, but I’m... hesitant to get it since I was hoping the manga would come first, and I honestly prefer manga to light novels anyway, the only exception I made was Magical Girl Raising Project. According to Amazon a physical copy will be for sell around December and there is a digital version out, so I think I’ll get the digital copy as a way to support the series.

 Anyway, Goblin Slayer is basically about... the adventures of a goblin slayer. Yeah, I know it sounds generic, but it’s good, I swear. In Generic RPG Video Game World #492, this fine fellow kills goblins and only goblins after they killed his family. He is basically medieval Batman if Batman killed. He knows everything about goblins and how to kill them, and with his party of a healer, an archer, a shaman, and a dwarf, he’ll make sure all of them pay for taking away the ones he loved. 

This manga is a bit of a deconstruction of typical RPG tropes. If you guys are familiar with anime Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash, then I’d say this is very similar to that, but with more mature themes in it. I found the world of Generic RPG Video Game World #492 rather interesting in how the goblins themselves are enough of a threat that they can kill newbie adventurers who are unprepared (and often are given goblins are seen as weak in this universe), but not enough of a threat for the higher leveled adventurers to bother fight them without high prices. It creates a cycle a of death and tragedy, real depressing stuff as the characters lament on their situation. The Goblin Slayer’s party members slowly start to understand why he hunts goblins and only goblins despite his rank, and the healer is such an endearing character. I like her interactions with the Goblin Slayer. Her innocence really compliments his gruff, silent nature, and she’s one of the few that can get more than a sentence out the guy save for his other love interest the Female Farmhand.

I know it sounds like I’m giving them generic names and whatnot, but manga really doesn’t give these characters names, like, at all. The Goblin Slayer is just called the Goblin Slayer by everyone in-universe, the healer is called Priestess I believe, and so on. It’s... really weird, but it works. I like where the story’s going so far, and it tempts me to get the light novel to see where things go from there. I’ll skim a few pages next time I head to the bookstore and see if the writing interests me.

In name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Lord grant me strength as I speak about this manga. 

So... Tsugumomo... where do I even begin with this one? I dread talking about this manga. It’s a guilty pleasure of mine, emphasis on guilty. I... don’t know if I can do this, but I’ll try.

Before I start, I’ll say this much, I like the premise. It’s basically a more Japanese version of Soul Eater. Special beings called, well, Tsugumomo, are objects that gain sentience after generations upon generations of use. Once sentient, they can take a human form and weaponize their original form so that exorcist can use them as tools and weapons to battle against evil spirits and demons. So yeah, basically a mix of Soul Eater and Twin Star Exorcist, other manga I happen to enjoy reading. And being the giant weeb I am, anything with a Japanese aesthetic to it is gonna’ get my interest. It’s how I got into Nioh, it’s how I got into Samurai Warriors and the Warriors series, so it appealed to me on a surface level. So when the anime came out, I watched the first episode and... immediately dropped the show there. The first minute had me clicking away to something else since it opened on a boob gag with middle school aged characters. However, episode 3 had a really good fight scene in it, I saw some gifs of it, and being a sap for a good fight scene, I gave it another shot. Episode 2 wasn’t that bad, episode 3 wasn’t either, but... I believe it was episode 5 that had me drop the anime again. I’m not against middle school aged characters discussing sexual topics, but... well, I can’t stand the first omnibus volume of Negima! for a reason. However, much like Negima! I decided to see if the manga was just as bad. After all, if The Sacred Blacksmith had talk me anything, it was that anime spin offs tend to play up the fanservice for the sake of making a quick buck. So i went to the manga to see if that was the case.

It was the exact opposite. The anime turned down the fanservice by quite a degree.

However... despite that, I’m still interested in the story. I’m going to spoil a bit from her, so be warned.

Much like with Negima! I skipped quite a few chapters, starting at around chapter 72, when they went into Kanaka, the main character’s mother, and Kiriha’s, Kazuya’s former Tsugumomo, past and relationship. I didn’t want to bother reading chapters of fanservice to get to what was interesting, so I skips around until I found something worth reading, and boy was this part worth reading. I found Kanaka to be real interesting character. It an interesting take on the whole “Too Strong to be Approached” angle. Or I really liked how she was emotionless until she was able to find a good opponent to fight and then essential became a more cheerful version of Blazblue’s Azrael, her strength being seen as something to be feared to the point of the Exorcist organization literally feeding her demons and evil spirits from their SSS-rank list just to make sure she wouldn’t try to take them out due to boredom. I liked how she trained her kids solely so they could give her a good fight when they mature. Her personality and how she grew in those chapters really hooked me to her character. 

To read those chapters, get attached to those characters, only to realize both Kanaka and Kiriha were dead and that Kanaka’s son had to kill his own mother because of a mistake he made when he was younger... I was shocked by how invested I was already. 

Also, there’s a tournament arc going on as of chapter 100, and learning about the exorcist academy and how they have different political beliefs in how Tsugumomo should be treated interests me as well, so there’s that.

With Tsugumomo I feel like it’s a Shounen manga trying to be a Seinen one by adding a bunch of nudity and sex scenes. Trust me, there are enough bare breast and sex scenes to be a hentai in this. And this very much much hits a nerve when it comes to my limits on fanservice. Dear god, the lewdness of this manga. I swear every chapter someone’s getting naked for some asinine reason or another. The sheer amount of underage nudity and sexual content is just enough to make me [RETRACTED]. Seriously, this the manga equivalent of Shadow the Hedgehog and the Dante’s Inferno video game. The mature themes in this manga detract more than add to the story...  Also, Kazuya’s character design makes me want to stab my eyes out, but that’s a story for another day.

Again, I didn’t read anything else before that, so if anything I think Kazuya’s abilities are a little OP since what was keeping him from his full potential was goddamn amnesia of all things, but... I’ll let it slide since I don’t have the full context. Much like Wanna’ be the Strongest in the World and Ikkitousen, I wouldn’t recommend this manga to anyone, I can’t do it with a clear conscience, but this is certainly a guilty pleasure of mine... and boy do I feel guilty for liking it.

And lastly, to get the taste of Tsugumomo out my mouth, we have a good manga, The Scared Blacksmith. I’m gonna’ be brief with this one because talking about Tsugumomo drained me a tad, but... 

I. Love. This. Manga. 

I just finished it last week and I’m so glad I bought. I’m actually shocked this is a Seinen. Save for a bit of fanservice in a first few volumes and... the stuff that happened in volume 6, this manga’s actually clean for the most part. It’s mostly about the Knight Cecily Campbell and her life in the Independent Trade City... no, that’ really the city’s name. Okay, quick tangent, but what’s with these fantasy Seinen manga and their borderline parody location names? I know the names just serve a means to an end in the grand scheme of things, but... really? 

Anyway, Cecily Campbell is a female knight joined the knight guard since she’s the only daughter of a noble family of knights, and... the story takes off from there. Again, Tsugumomo drained me a tad, but trust me when I say this manga is good. It’s got action, romance, a decent female character. I said this before in some of my other Ramblings, but Cecily is one of my favorite female characters ever. The anime didn’t do her justice... but anyway, this is a good manga overall. It fully out in the West so I recommend you all buy it when you can.

And so... on a lackluster note, I ended my rambling about Seinen manga. I’ll do The Sacred Blacksmith justice a later day. I’m beat now, so I’m gonna’ just... read some manga, maybe draw a bit... feel free to message me if you guys have question... I’m just... gonna’ be here. Phew, I’m tired now...
