“Does it feel any better now?” Steve asks, cuddled next to you on the porch swing outside the Byers’ home. He’s been wearing the same worried glint in his honey eyes since the sun went down — when he tried to give you a piggyback ride and then slipped in the mud. He broke your fall for the most part, but your ankle got caught underneath him.

You nod, then grimace when you try to twist your foot. “Sorta…” you shrug.

“Have I said I’m sorry yet?” he jokes with a scrunch to the bridge of his chiseled nose.

“Only a billion times.”

“Well, I’m gonna make it a billion and one now. ‘Cause I’m sorry.”

“I’ve already said it’s okay,” you assure with a giggle, leaning over to knock your shoulder against his. “It doesn’t even feel that bad anymore. I swear.”

“I’ll kiss it better when we get home,” he offers, just to make you get all shy. His soft smirk widens to a fuller beam when his ploy works. “I mean, you are staying over tonight, right?”

“Of course,” you shrug. “How else are you gonna kiss my sprained ankle better?”

“Touché.”

He leans in for a kiss. The tip of his nose just barely grazes the side of yours when the screen door shrieks open. The Talking Heads playing from inside grows suddenly louder, then muffles again when the door shuts. Jim and Joyce stumble out together — eyes glassy and cheeks flushed, obviously not totally sober.

The woman pops a cigarette between her pink lips. Hopper lights it for her. “You know… I’ve already booked the reservation for Enzo’s,” he tells her lowly. His back faces the two of you, totally unaware of your presence and blocking any view of you.

“Oh,” she hums sarcastically, blowing smoke from her lungs. “Is that right?”

“Yep. So either I sit there all alone with my chee-anty, or you come and keep me company,” Jim lilts in a quiet, honeyed tone. “And if that doesn’t sound like a good time, then maybe the bottomless breadsticks will win you over.”

Steve leans against your shoulder. His mouth rests outside your ear. “Do you think they know we’re out here?” he asks.

You raise a silent hand with a pointed finger, shushing him without saying a word.

Joyce giggles like a teenage girl. “Look. I don’t even know if I like you,” she teases.

“But you’re thinking about it, right?” Hopper wonders, with all the hope of a schoolboy asking out a girl way out of his league. “‘Cause you should.”

Steve shifts. The porch swing squeaks. Both parents turn to face you, features softly agape. Jim blinks once. “You guys been sittin’ there the whole time?” he asks in a strangled voice.

“Enough to hear you groveling,” you answer.

“Alright…” he grumbles half-heartedly.

“The bottomless breadsticks are actually pretty good, Joyce,” Steve chirps obliviously, smiling wide and flitting his eyes between the two standing across the porch. “But, you know, if she doesn’t wanna go with you, Chief, I’m always available—”

“Okay, let’s go around back,” Hop announces, guiding Joyce down the steps with a hand curled gently around her elbow. The woman giggles when you whistle suggestively at them. Jim shouts at you over his shoulder. “Watch it! And ice that ankle when you get home!”

“Yes, sir.”

“And Harrington, don’t let her walk on it,” the man sighs, already exasperated. “Be a gentleman, alright? Give your girl a day’s bed rest, dote on her or whatever—”

“Oh, we’re not— I’m not his girlfriend,” you correct with a forced laugh.

Your words seem to take Steve by surprise. He flashes you a look, scruff features swirled with confusion. “What are you talking about?”

“We’re not dating, Steve.”

He scoffs an awkward laugh, brows pinching. “You’re joking, right?”

“Well, this is awkward,” Jim mumbles, grateful he’s not the butt of the joke for once.

Joyce slaps his arm. “Hop.”

“We’re gonna go,” the man announces, heading towards the backyard. “Have fun with… this.”

Steve waits until they’re gone to face you fully. He turns on the swing until his knee brushes the outside of your own. The hurt puppy expression on his face hasn’t quite ebbed. “You don’t think we’re dating?”

“You do?” you retort.

“Yes!” Steve shouts, talking wildly with his hands. “Our first date was at Enzo’s! I brought you flowers and everything!”

“You never asked me to be your girlfriend, Steve—”

“I thought it was implied!”

“—I thought you didn’t wanna be, like, official with me or something!”

Steve goes suddenly silent. His chest starts to ache like there’s a fire rising behind his ribcage. He swallows hard. “Have you been… Have you been seeing other people?”

“No!” you answer instantly, face twisted in abhorrence of the thought. “Of course not!”

“Okay. Good,” he nods, raking a hand through his wild hair and settling again. “‘Cause I haven’t either, so… We’ve basically been dating this whole time.”

You meet his smile with a playful glower. “You still shouldn’t asked me, though.”

“Well, I’m asking you now,” he announces and wraps an arm around your shoulder. He leans in until you can smell the birthday cake and soda on his breath. You don’t notice until now that your lipstick is smeared on his mouth. “Do you wanna be girlfriend-boyfriend with me?”

You purse your lips to the side with a playful hum. “Mm. I’ll think about it.”

ok so im never gonna shut up about daughter helly. for lack of a better word irving and dylan raised her? like mark was technically supposed to be training her but she was too busy thwarting him at every turn for that to happen.

the people who actually get to instruct helly are dylan and irving. dylan is able to more effectively explain refining to her than mark was and he's even kind of stern about it for a second there ("don't fuck around, take it seriously") very fatherly imo.

irving in turn tries to instruct her on the more spiritual aspects of life as an innie and yes she resists that too, but come on. his chewing out mark for eagan bingo is sooooo dad.

they both also get their chances to be protective of her. i've said this before but helly straight up offers to do the OTC instead of dylan privately. and like, objectively dylan was the BEST candidate to OTC because he was the only one that they had any information about, and that info was that he had a family and thus trustworthy people to whistleblow to. but he refuses because he says it's "only fair" and ehhhh because of the previous statement i call BS.

he knew he was doing the most dangerous part of the mission with the most to lose and everything to gain whereas helly (the least content with her life as an innie from the jump and already demonstrated a willingness to die) has the least to lose. BUT HE WONT LET HER! because he is a father, outside and inside lumon. and he almost is killed for it, if not for mark's insistence on getting his team back.

there's also obviously the topic of the week too in irv's self-sacrificing to save the real helly who would have probably been dead forever without him exposing helena in the way he did.

like i know they all come out somewhat fully formed adults but theyre also children. helly is like 2 months old shes a baby to someone like irv who's like 7 years old or something.

god the way he tells helena that its ok, whoever she was outside won't change anything. he really does say it with such gentle earnestness. even a noble heart must crack. that was when he knew it wasn't his baby girl but some phantom possessing her.

i dont usually like literally assigning nuclear family roles into the found family but the paternal relationships helly has with irv and dylan are just so?? compelling? like. thats her dad whos her bestie whos her coworker who died for her.

my totally 100% correct opinion on which haikyuu ships would go canon if it were heterosexual

Kagehina: yes. regardless of which of them were a girl. however they would not get together within the canon of the show but have 1 or 2 almost kisses and then after the series ended you'd find out they got married. Like there'd be 2 lines total talking about them getting married and thats it.

Tsukkiyama: yes. regardless of which of them were a girl. they'd be together at the start of the series and be a relatively boring couple basically just there to make weird heteronormative quips (if yamaguchi were the girl, tsukki would roll his eyes a lot at having to go shopping, etc, and if tsukki were the girl, yamaguchi would be way too insecure about other guys looking at her) BUT late in the series there would be a short arc dedicated to them breaking up and then immediately getting back together and I hate to tell you, it would be cute.

Daisuga: my heart and soul - not in any fucking universe. I dont think there would even be jokes or innuendos about it. I think if Suga were the girl there would even be moments of Daichi like straight up not realizing it. "wdym you cant change with us???" bitches are the Pillars of Reliability for Karasuno they wouldnt bother giving them relationships.

Asanoya: if noya were the girl, yes. If Asahi were the girl, no. Noya could be a fiesty little girlfriend but they'd be too chicken to give a short man a big, bashful ladyfriend and that is the ONLY reason they wouldnt be canon.

Iwaoi: sorry to break it to you but probably not. the writers would be pouting and slamming their fists around like "nooooo they see each other like siblings, we wanted to show male-female friendships were possibleeeeee." however I think the chances would be slightly higher if Iwa were the girl. In that annoying tsundere way of "oh she's never going to admit she likes the guy everyone else also likes" but it would probably only be implied, never canon.

Kyohaba: yes! if Yahaba was the girl. Their entire thing would be switched to "kyotani finding a girl who smacks him around and decides to devote himself to her" where Yabaha would pretend she hates it. Less chance if Kyotani were the girl but I suppose not impossible.

Ushiten: Complicated. I think in general if they were male-female their friendship would play a bigger role. But it would be canon if Ushijima were a girl. Only because of the double standard for women. In the same way that all women characters eventually have children even if they claim they dont like them initially, I think the writers would be too chicken to let a woman be mean and formidable and stern and they would have to temper her with her quirky, ecclectic best friend/boyfriend to make sure people understand she's still Woman. They would be canon within the actual text and not just implied/afterwards but it would only be given enough screen time to establish Ushijima as a feminine woman and then be forgotten so Ushijima could proceed to beat the shit out of whatever team they were up against next. However if Tendou were the girl she would 100% have an overt and obvious crush on Ushijima (probably literally saying she was in love with him out loud) BUT they would let Ushijima keep his intensity and it would only serve to make Tendou quirkier and/or played as a joke, it wouldnt be canon.

Arankita: No! Only because if Kita were a girl, Atsukita would be canon. And I think if Aran were a girl, they would be given a much stronger Best Friends energy in that "male-female friendship" way. both a female kita or a female aran would still be "one of the boys."

Bonus: Atsukita: Yes, but only in promotional media or extras, they wouldnt give screen time to it. Like there'd be a bunch of promotional stuff of like Atsumu picking Kita up or teasing her. yknow.

Bokuaka: Yes, obviously, geez. Doesnt matter which is the girl. Thet would already be in a relationship from the time theyre introduced.

Kuroken: Yes, but they wouldnt get together. It would be like a slow burn where they keep looking at each other with flowers in the background, but it would feel like the writers forgot to put them together. Like the series would end and everyone would go "huh. weird we never got a kuroken confession but alright" No kisses, no hand holding, but like 12 extra minutes of gazing at each other and blushing. But only if Kenma was the girl. If Kuroo was the girl they'd be too chicken á la Asanoya and would instead pull an Iwaoi.

Rarepairs as a general rule are a "No" just due to them not being canon for reasons unrelated to gender, however, I want to shoutout these rarepairs:

Kogagoshi: Wouldnt be canon due to not enough screen time, but regardless of who was the girl, Kogane would have been used as a joke developing a spontaneous crush on Goshiki for the camp that is basically just there for comedic relief

Kenhina: regardless of who was the girl this would be an UNBERABLE implied attraction that serves only to create drama between Kagehina. Like nobody who's read love stories with love triangles before would ever think theyd end up together but the writers would try their fucking best to convince you this was plausible over the obviously intended endgame of kageyama.

so nico and blake had met before obviously, but they never really hung out because they were both super busy with their own sports. but with blake injuries, jack and nico go over to her apartment a lot to check up on her and thats where they get super close

SO! here are some things that made them realize they liked the other person:

blake:

whenever her phone rang or buzzed, her first thought always went to nico and hoping that he was the reason behind her notifs

when jack would come over to her apartment and she'd catch herself being disappointed when nico didn't come with him

nicos brown puppy dog eyes. once hes talking to her, literally sitting like a foot or two away from her, and shes just completely mesmerized. she doesn't realize he stopped talking and once she catches on shes like "did i really just sit here with my cheek resting on my palm mesmerized by this man..."

when she was scrolling through the njd merch website to buy something to wear to one of jacks upcoming games and she decides to impulsively buy nicos jersey (she doesn't admit that she's bought it tho she keeps it in her closet and periodically pulls it out to stare at)

she starts giggling and blushing whenever hes talking to her even if what he said isn't funny

when she downloads duolingo to try and learn some swiss german after one too many glasses of wine tho is when she realizes she truly has a problem and that she fr likes him

when hes cooking himself dinner at night and he immediately thinks of making enough for blake and bringing it over to her apartment. hes like "well... i know shes upset right now so..." and so he doubles whatever recipe hes making

when jack tells him that blakes starting to feel better and that nico doesnt have to come with him to her apartment anymore and nicos first thought is ... "but i want to see blake"

when theyre out one night with the rest of the team and the boys keep urging him to go talk to this girl who's staring at him but he refuses because "why would i leave blake to talk to these idiots without me"

when hes hanging out with friends and blake calls and so he's immediately excusing himself from the room so he can hear her properly

he remembers all the little things like her coffee orders, favourite songs, snacks, etc... all saved into his notes app "just in case she needs something"

when jack comes over to nicos apartment to hang out and nico distractedly asked where blake was... (gagged jack bad)

nico watching a whole season of a tv show on a plane ride just because blake mentioned that she liked it

overhearing jack asking blake when she was gonna get a bf... his heart started beating fr hoping that she had no prospects (aside from him ofc) when this happens he reevaluates and is like... "okay maybe i'm not doing all of this because i think of her as just a friend.." and then he goes down that spiral of "if its morally wrong to date my teammate / bromance twins sister"

long answer ; depends on your areas of interest.

i find its something both magical girl and non-magical girl fans enjoy from existing in the fandom, but i do understand its not everyones cup of tea!

i think if youre even mildly interested in it its 100% worth the watch, its only 12 episodes and 1 movie [ or 3 movies if you watch the series remake but i digress ]. so only abt 6 and a bit hours of watch time !

Obviously i am biased but i genuinely think its respected and liked for good reason, and theres lots of good elements past the madohomu yuri lmaoo.

the characters are written very well, and the plot too. even if you dislike those aspects i find everyone appreciates the art and music because. OH MY GOSH THEYRE SO GOOD.

if you decide to watch it id suggest holding out for the whole series and not stopping partway, since the last few eps are very important to appreciating it! then decide if you wanna watch the movie ^_^

Honestly I have a theory that sheik was ORIGINALLY early in development supposed to be their own character but became Zelda’s alter ego later. Link's mom. There is a chance that her design in the manga was actually by Nintendo originally and not the akira himekawa. So, here me out, the German Club Nintendo comic, it's called Hyrule under fire, its supposed to be about the end of the civil war that happens before OoT, so, since Link's dad is so close to just looking like Link with cheek bones (designs that drive me up the way in a funny way for reasons that if you ever ask me I'm gonna throw up on a post) I think he was just made up for the comic.

that was until, with you both being the school ambassadors, you got paired up to welcome an important guest in your school. some kind of professor with media staff: so an important task indeed, you had to showcase the best traits of your school.

so you and jiseok started hanging out more to prepare everything you wanted and make a plan. he was sooo silly, easily bringing you out of the shy shell you were in. you started talking more, he even invited you to one of the band practices. even though you found him playing the guitar extremely attractive, his friends noticed how nervous he was (and all the small mistakes he made due to that. but they ignored it, having in mind his slowly growing crush on you).

when the day came, you and jiseok decide to wear matching sweaters in representative colors of your school. it all goes smoothly, you send each other encouraging looks and nods. the professor seems pleased, happy with your presentation. at the end, you take a picture with him and jiseok.

you hoped it would stay that way after it ends – you’d stay friends with him. and luckily, you do. everyday you wait for the material to drop and when it does, jiseok runs up to you in the hallway.

haha thank you for asking you are correct i think about it SO much. this is a really long post so read more below:

a big part of all that thinking is i've been having a lot of trouble with them because I don't think theyre super clearly defined by the game. i think there are characters who are all like.. most obviously duos or kind of paralleling eachother, but i don't consider those The Ships/Pairs necessarily. (think that one fanart of them all paired up dancing and its like color coordinated)

Off the top of my head, these would be my rival "ships"-

My "Real" Ships..

Valen/Juniper (obviously i don't even need to explain this. these two require no other thought they're just like practically-almost canon.)

Eiland/Caldarus (well. yes. history nerd meet living history dragon)

Reina/Balor (new ship but i think there's something poetic about Balor after staying at her family inn and spending all this time casually together. i want the slowburn. it's very hallmark movie and ALSO both of them love honey apple curry. idk it just clicked for me recently. i think they'd have a lot to learn from eachother and could both travel the world and return to their home in mistria. i have a vision.)

March/Ryis (semi neutral about this but also they're ALWAYS hanging out together so MAYBE... im still searching for an "angle" into this other than i think it would be cute if they're both like quietly pining. its about yearning.)

HOWEVER this leaves me with-

Celine/???, Adeline/???, Hayden/??? which is difficult bc I don't see too much romantic chemistry between these three.... I COULD pair them off with other Non-romanceable characters, but I don't feel super strongly about them yet..
