I love Steph's origin as told in the Secret Origins 80 page giant- I just overall think it strengthens her character by giving her a lot of pathos and adding to her heroism (which isn't something writers were focused on in her actual intro in detective comics #647 since she was just meant to act as a plot device back then) BUT there is one tiny detail in it i will begrudge, and that is the portrayal of her having a minor love at first sight moment for tim

The adventure in 'tec where they first meet -> Tim investigating the same crime scene as Steph -> she beats him up not knowing it's him at first, apologizes but says he shouldn't have scared her -> he remembers her/the moniker she goes by -> they talk about plot for a few pages -> Stephanie starts flirting

Which...is so fascinating to me and says so much about Stephanie. She highlights the fact that Tim "remembered" her. Like. Steph. Girl. This is our bar? It's sweet but kind of speaks to how much Stephanie is ignored at home/how little and sporadically she's shown interacting with her peers (and rarely ever the same kids twice). Her idea of peak romance is just...being on someone's mind even when you're not there.

Kind of also adds layers to Steph's proclivity towards jealousy later on, a manifestation of her insecurity and loneliness (though don't get it twisted, she's not written this way bc Dixon and co think it's an interesting character flaw, they wrote it bc they think it's an inherent character flaw of (particularly young) women/girls, which is very apparent in how he approaches Ariana's character as well from what I've read)

Also the fact that Steph becomes so smitten for Tim almost immediately after this is (a few issues later she aggressively flirts with him during AN ACTIVE HOSTAGE SITUATION. WHERE SHE'S THE HOSTAGE) again is kind of a mixture of kind of funny and sad. One boy is nice to her once and she's fully ready to wife him. Girl you are deranged (affectionate) (concerned)

Darker skin and flat noses are so frowned upon and even mocked by Filipino beauty standards, which have existed in precolonial times rooted in classism, where royalty avoided the sun, as peasants were often laboring in the fields. This was only exacerbated by the 300+ years Spanish colonization and the American occupation during the turn of the 20th century.

So it’s refreshing to see rep that’s more like like the average Filipino than, say, any actor from our mainstream media (who are often half-Filipino, half-white! See how that ties back into the Filipino beauty standard?)

Reading Uncle Rick’s books at the ages of 11-12, and getting introduced to LGBTQ+ I just went ohh cool. Like I didn’t even know the terminology I was like ohh that’s a thing, must be really common. And then reading other books, and realising that homophobia is a thing was honestly so jarring. Like what do you mean people are against love??? His books introduced it so normally.

I think watching Invader Zim as a 4 year old autistic kid was probably one of the best things that ever happened to me, because I’ve always related to how horrible Zim found the Earth to be on like a visceral level, like I could not stand certain textures or the feeling of other humans touching me and so many things around me always just felt repulsive by default, and most of my earliest memories involve tiny me screaming and slamming my head into walls for very long periods of time because of it.

And the show illustrated how that felt, how the whole world felt to me perfectly and twisted it into something hilarious that I could laugh at crack jokes about and make fun of, and to top it off the idiot going through it still had a monumental amount of unwavering passion for what he did and self assurance and confidence despite it all

And I’ll never know for certain, but I think I may have ended up becoming a pretty different person if I hadn’t had that

I like to think back when I watched the show and I started joining groups because of my love for Malec and I kept hearing how the books were better- and so I wasted my time and money on them and learned how shitty of a person cc really is, and then when I say “no the books are trash”, then book fans get mad and say how the show changed everything. but one of my fav arguments that book fans make (I don’t know why this makes me laugh so much) but they say the one of the worst things they did for the show is that Matt is taller and he doesn’t have blue eyes

like that’s the complaint you have? that’s what bothers you the most out of this whole ordeal? (I’m being for real, I actually see this complaint a lot from book fans) that Alec doesn’t have blue eyes so we don’t get to hear Magnus going on about his fav black hair and blue eyed combo ✨ like that’s what makes you mad the most? the only Alec thing I don’t like is the storyline with Magnus and valentine and the fact Matt doesn’t speak with his actual accent and he doesn’t get to stay sassy and call more people out lmao (the New York accent is EVERYTHING)

Malec on screen was one of the first lgbt+ couples and characters I saw that weren’t toxic, didn’t cheat, weren’t miserable because they’re gay, don’t die once they get together, or whatever bury your gay trope someone can think of. this representation matters. I’ve always related to Alec and Magnus so seeing them actually being healthy and not falling to those tropes was everything to me

Me when I remember that forcing myself to think a character is straight until proven otherwise is actually damaging to my mental health because it subconsciously tells myself that I can’t be someone like that —a hero, the good guy, have power, be anything— and queer because it is a rare thing (near impossible) for someone to be both.

I am pushing my dreams further away from myself whenever I agree with a homophobic fan that a character is probably straight and I’m probably crazy.

mostly because while yeah, that whole conflict comes to a head at the climax of the series, it also doesn't end in some annoying shit where either gammamon Learns To Control His Evil Side (functionally destroying gulus) or Finds A Better Higher Power (technically he does as siriusmon but), he just goes DUDE YOU NEED TO CHILL and gulus grumpily obliges after getting the shit kicked out of him.
