Chapter 22: Farm & Orchard
Welcome back to my Totally Lit Road Trip blog, where the lit stands for literary!
Today’s adventures took us all around Concord, MA, as we learned about Henry David Thoreau and Louisa May Alcott, as well their relationships with each other and other authors in the area. I think it says a lot about the authors that despite age and gender differences, they inspired each other’s writing and played a role in each other’s lives.
Jess and I started our morning at Thoreau Farm, where we were treated to a private tour, because we were the only ones there. Our tour guide, Barbara, is an amazing historian who told us the saga of the Thoreau family’s life on this farm. Even though Henry David Thoreau only lived there for eight months after he was born, the farm played a large role in his writing due to the stories his mother told him about the place. His grandmother, Mary Jones, was living in the house with her husband, and when he died, the “widow’s third” rule went into effect, meaning that even though she couldn’t own the house, she could legally continue living in 1/3 of it. Mary “swapped” homes with her daughter Cynthia (Thoreau’s mother), since she was younger and would have an easier time farming the land to make a profit. This is how Thoreau came to be born on a farm not technically owned by anyone in his family.
In 1995, when the last living owner of the house passed away, developers wanted to purchase the land and build condos. This prompted a group of historians and literature lovers to create a trust and raise the nearly $1M needed to purchase the land and restore the house. Rather than restoring it to its original form, as a lot of historical societies do with old houses, the trust wanted to refurbish in a way that would honor Thoreau’s memory and lifestyle. Given that he was a huge proponent of finding harmony in nature, the house was refurbished using recycled material and environmentally friendly paint, and uses solar panels to provide most of its electricity.
One interesting tidbit about the house is that its original foundation was about 300 yards away from where it lies now, and no one really knows why it was moved. It certainly would have been easier to just build a new house on the place where it is now, and historians have not discovered a reason for its move.
Inside the house you can see most of the original floorboards and walls, which were repainted to match the original colors in the house, although they left a few spots un-painted for comparison.
On our tour, Barbara told us about Thoreau and his siblings. He and his brother John both (unsuccessfully) proposed to the same woman. A few weeks later, John cut himself shaving and ultimately died of lockjaw. Thoreau was so distraught over the death of this brother that he wound up developing what we now know were psychosomatic symptoms which mirrored John’s so strongly that his family was convinced Thoreau must have cut himself as well. He eventually recovered, and went on to write A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers, about a boat trip he took with John before his passing.
Thoreau’s younger sister Sophia (pronounced So-Fye-Uh) was an accomplished artist, and drew the cover art used for Walden, the book for which Thoreau is probably most well-known. Additionally, the family were abolitionists, and his older sister, Helen, founded the first woman’s abolitionist group.
Thoreau Farm is also still a fully functional farm, and volunteers from a non-profit organization called Gaining Ground farm the land and donate all the produce to local food pantries and meal programs. We took a few minutes to stroll around their crops, and it was really impressive.
My favorite new plant discovery came in the form of Egyptian Walking Onions, which were growing in one of the small garden plots near the house. When I said I wondered how they tasted, Barbara gave us permission to pick a few, if we would try them and let her know what they tasted like. Can confirm they tasted like red onions, just in miniature form! The Egyptian Walking Onions are an heirloom plant, meaning the seeds were from Thoreau’s time period.
(The little purple buds in the phot above are actually the Egyptian Walking Onions! They’re very small, but very tasty!)
After a quick and delicious lunch at Nashoba Brook Bakery, we headed over to Orchard House, the family home of Louisa May Alcott.
As you approach the house, the first thing that stands out is the lovely little garden out front, which is planted with the same plants and flowers that each of the four March sisters plants in her own little garden plot in Little Women. The plots are labeled accordingly with the sisters’ names - Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy.
The first part of the tour takes place in the Concord School of Philosophy building, which Alcott’s father built in 1879. He was a Transcendentalist, who believed in education reformation. He believed in things like recess and field trips, and opposed corporal punishment, which was widely used at the time.
In the Concord School of Philosophy, you’ll find benches that were created for the schoolhouse scenes in the 2019 Little Woman film, and donated to Orchard House after filming. You can sit on them as you view a short documentary about Orchard House, narrated by a very compelling “Louisa May Alcott”, played by Jan Turnquist. You can watch the documentary here, if you are a member of Thirteen PBS.
After viewing the documentary, it was time to tour the house. Unfortunately, photography is not allowed, so if you want to see the residence in all its glory and fine detail, you’ve got to come visit for yourself.
We learned that the family bought Orchard House when Louisa was 25 years old. Prior to that, the family had lived in 29 houses over a span of 30 years, which sounds exhausting. After purchasing the house, which was only a few rooms, Alcott’s father had a nearby tenant house rolled in using logs, and attached it to the main house, making the whole residence much more spacious for his family. Louisa and her sisters helped with painting and setting up the house, although her sister Beth died before the family officially moved in. Beth’s melodium (a reed organ that resembles a small keyboard) and her portrait reside in one of the sitting rooms.
Due to the success of Alcott’s writing, she was able to furnish the family home with a lot of nice things, many of which are still present in the house today. She was also able to finance her youngest sister May’s art lessons in Europe, which were necessary because in America, art was not seen as a viable career for a woman. May had a small studio room in Orchard House where she gave art lessons, and one of her students, Daniel Chester French, eventually went on to design the Lincoln Memorial.
May spent many years in Europe learning art from the masters, eventually marrying and having a daughter, whom she named after her sister Louisa. Unfortunately, May passed a way shortly after giving birth, and then Lulu was sent back to America to be raised by Louisa for about nine years. Lulu eventually moved to Switzerland, where she lived until her death in 1975 at the age of 95.
May’s artwork lives on, however, as it can be found in every room in the house. From sketches to paintings to ink drawings all over the windowsills and walls, May’s art gives visitors glimpses into the lives of the Alcotts and the art styles of the time period. Due to a current art exhibit with the Concord Library, more of May’s art was on display than usual, including a silk dress which she hand painted. In addition, the wedding dress of the eldest sister, Anna, was also on special display in Louisa’s bedroom. The silvery gray silk was certainly unlike any modern wedding dress you’d see today, but it had a very sophisticated look nonetheless.
Some other items of note in the house were Louisa’s boots and writing desk. The boots are kept in a costume trunk from when the sisters and their friends would put on plays. The very same boots are mentioned in Little Women as belonging to Jo, who wears them to play Roderigo, the same role Louisa wore the boots for in real life. Louisa’s writing desk, though small in size, was large in what it represented - her family’s faith in her writing ability. During her lifetime, it was unfitting for a woman to have her own writing desk, as writing wasn’t seen as an appropriate career for them, similar to art. Louisa’s father build the desk for her, showing how strongly he believed in her.
Something I already knew before visiting Orchard House, but that I still think is interesting and important to mention is that when Alcott was writing Little Women, she fully intended for Jo, the character modeled after herself, to remain a “spinster,” just as Alcott was. However, her publisher absolutely forbid that, so as a “compromise,” Alcott created a sort of unexpected character for Jo to marry, rather than the fan favorite pick, Laurie.
One thing I didn’t know before our tour was how involved the Concord authors were in each other’s lives. Nathanial Hawthorne lived next door to the Alcotts, and Thoreau and Emerson were contemporaries of Louisa’s father, Amos Bronson. They even joined the family for Anna’s wedding.
After our tour of Orchard House, Jess and I explored downtown Concord a bit, and visited a few antique stores, a chocolate shop, and a cheese shop. Then we went back to our hotel to unwind for a bit before heading to Copper House Tavern for dinner. We both had fancy burgers that were quite scrumptious, and very satisfying. Now we’re back at the hotel resting up for tomorrow. We’ve got a lot planned, and it looks like rain all day, but luckily most of our adventuring will take place in doors.
Tune in tomorrow for some more literary adventures in Concord!
<3 Theresa

Apache Beam For Beginners: Building Scalable Data Pipelines
Apache Beam
Apache Beam, the simplest method for streaming and batch data processing. Data processing for mission-critical production workloads can be written once and executed anywhere.
Overview of Apache Beam
An open source, consistent approach for specifying batch and streaming data-parallel processing pipelines is called Apache Beam. To define the pipeline, you create a program using one of the open source Beam SDKs. One of Beam’s supported distributed processing back-ends, such as Google Cloud Dataflow, Apache Flink, or Apache Spark, then runs the pipeline.
Beam is especially helpful for situations involving embarrassingly parallel data processing, where the issue may be broken down into numerous smaller data bundles that can be handled separately and concurrently. Beam can also be used for pure data integration and Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) activities. These operations are helpful for loading data onto a new system, converting data into a more suitable format, and transferring data between various storage media and data sources.Image credit to Apache Beam
How Does It Operate?
Sources of Data
Whether your data is on-premises or in the cloud, Beam reads it from a wide range of supported sources.
Processing Data
Your business logic is carried out by Beam for both batch and streaming usage cases.
Writing Data
The most widely used data sinks on the market receive the output of your data processing algorithms from Beam.
Features of Apache Beams
Combined
For each member of your data and application teams, a streamlined, unified programming model for batch and streaming use cases.
Transportable
Run pipelines across several execution contexts (runners) to avoid lock-in and provide flexibility.
Wide-ranging
Projects like TensorFlow Extended and Apache Hop are built on top of Apache Beam, demonstrating its extensibility.
Open Source
Open, community-based support and development to help your application grow and adapt to your unique use cases.
Apache Beam Pipeline Runners
The data processing pipeline you specify with your Beam program is converted by the Beam Pipeline Runners into an API that works with the distributed processing back-end of your choosing. You must designate a suitable runner for the back-end where you wish to run your pipeline when you run your Beam program.
Beam currently supports the following runners:
The Direct Runner
Runner for Apache Flink Apache Flink
Nemo Runner for Apache
Samza the Apache A runner Samza the Apache
Spark Runner for Apache Spark by Apache
Dataflow Runner for Google Cloud Dataflow on Google Cloud
Jet Runner Hazelcast Jet Hazelcast
Runner Twister 2

Contribute
The Apache v2 license governs Beam, a project of the Apache Software Foundation. Contributions are highly valued in the open source community of Beam! Please refer to the Contribute section if you would want to contribute.
Apache Beam SDKs
Whether the input is an infinite data set from a streaming data source or a finite data set from a batch data source, the Beam SDKs offer a uniform programming model that can represent and alter data sets of any size. Both bounded and unbounded data are represented by the same classes in the Beam SDKs, and operations on the data are performed using the same transformations. You create a program that specifies your data processing pipeline using the Beam SDK of your choice.
As of right now, Beam supports the following SDKs for specific languages:
Java SDK for Apache Beam Java
Python’s Apache Beam SDK
SDK Go for Apache Beam Go
Apache Beam Python SDK
A straightforward yet effective API for creating batch and streaming data processing pipelines is offered by the Python SDK for Apache Beam.
Get started with the Python SDK
Set up your Python development environment, download the Beam SDK for Python, and execute an example pipeline by using the Beam Python SDK quickstart. Next, learn the fundamental ideas that are applicable to all of Beam’s SDKs by reading the Beam programming handbook.
For additional details on specific APIs, consult the Python API reference.
Python streaming pipelines
With Beam SDK version 2.5.0, the Python streaming pipeline execution is possible (although with certain restrictions).
Python type safety
Python lacks static type checking and is a dynamically typed language. In an attempt to mimic the consistency assurances provided by real static typing, the Beam SDK for Python makes use of type hints both during pipeline creation and runtime. In order to help you identify possible issues with the Direct Runner early on, Ensuring Python Type Safety explains how to use type hints.
Managing Python pipeline dependencies
Because the packages your pipeline requires are installed on your local computer, they are accessible when you execute your pipeline locally. You must, however, confirm that these requirements are present on the distant computers if you wish to run your pipeline remotely. Managing Python Pipeline Dependencies demonstrates how to enable remote workers to access your dependencies.
Developing new I/O connectors for Python
You can develop new I/O connectors using the flexible API offered by the Beam SDK for Python. For details on creating new I/O connectors and links to implementation guidelines unique to a certain language, see the Developing I/O connectors overview.
Making machine learning inferences with Python
Use the RunInference API for PyTorch and Scikit-learn models to incorporate machine learning models into your inference processes. You can use the tfx_bsl library if you’re working with TensorFlow models.
The RunInference API allows you to generate several kinds of transforms since it accepts different kinds of setup parameters from model handlers, and the type of parameter dictates how the model is implemented.
An end-to-end platform for implementing production machine learning pipelines is called TensorFlow Extended (TFX). Beam has been integrated with TFX. Refer to the TFX user handbook for additional details.
Python multi-language pipelines quickstart
Transforms developed in any supported SDK language can be combined and used in a single multi-language pipeline with Apache Beam. Check out the Python multi-language pipelines quickstart to find out how to build a multi-language pipeline with the Python SDK.
Unrecoverable Errors in Beam Python
During worker startup, a few typical mistakes might happen and stop jobs from commencing. See Unrecoverable faults in Beam Python for more information on these faults and how to fix them in the Python SDK.
Apache Beam Java SDK
A straightforward yet effective API for creating batch and streaming parallel data processing pipelines in Java is offered by the Java SDK for Apache Beam.
Get Started with the Java SDK
Learn the fundamental ideas that apply to all of Beam’s SDKs by beginning with the Beam Programming Model.
Further details on specific APIs can be found in the Java API Reference.
Supported Features
Every feature that the Beam model currently supports is supported by the Java SDK.
Extensions
A list of available I/O transforms may be found on the Beam-provided I/O Transforms page.
The following extensions are included in the Java SDK:
Inner join, outer left join, and outer right join operations are provided by the join-library.
For big iterables, sorter is a scalable and effective sorter.
The benchmark suite Nexmark operates in both batch and streaming modes.
A batch-mode SQL benchmark suite is called TPC-DS.
Euphoria’s Java 8 DSL for BEAM is user-friendly.
There are also a number of third-party Java libraries.
Java multi-language pipelines quickstart
Transforms developed in any supported SDK language can be combined and used in a single multi-language pipeline with Apache Beam. Check out the Java multi-language pipelines quickstart to find out how to build a multi-language pipeline with the Java SDK.

Branding Luxury: Marketing Strategies for High-End Villa Rentals in Ubud
Ubud, a charming town in Bali, Indonesia, is renowned for its lush landscapes and cultural richness. This setting has made it a prime location for luxury villa rentals in Bali. Catering to a discerning clientele requires strategic branding and marketing. We will explore key strategies that can elevate high-end villa rentals in this competitive market.
Understanding the unique selling points of your property is the first step. Luxury villas in Ubud should not just offer comfort but also an immersive cultural experience. Balancing modern amenities with traditional Balinese elements is crucial. This blend appeals to travelers seeking both luxury and authenticity.
Effective branding goes beyond property features. It encompasses the entire guest experience, from initial inquiry to post-stay follow-up. Every touchpoint is an opportunity to reinforce your villa's luxury status. Your brand should promise and deliver an unparalleled experience in Ubud’s serene environment.
The Essence of Branding in Luxury Villa Rentals
Effective branding is pivotal in the luxury rental market. It sets the tone for the entire guest experience. A well-crafted brand story can be a powerful tool. It should resonate with the values and expectations of affluent travelers. This story should highlight the exclusivity and unique offerings of your villa.
Visual branding is equally important. This includes everything from the logo to the interior design of your villa. Each element should exude luxury and attention to detail. Consider hiring a professional designer. They can ensure that your visual branding aligns with the high-end positioning of your villa.
Incorporate local culture into your branding strategy. This can be a major differentiator in the competitive market of Ubud. Showcase local art, architecture, and traditions in your villa’s decor. Highlight these cultural elements in your marketing materials. This approach can create a deeper connection with guests.
Leveraging Digital Marketing
A robust digital presence is essential for high-end villas in Ubud. Start with a professionally designed, SEO-optimized website. It should reflect the luxury of your property and be easy to navigate. Include stunning images and detailed descriptions of your villa. Ensure the booking process is straightforward and secure.
Social media is a powerful tool for visual storytelling. Platforms like Instagram and Facebook are ideal for showcasing your villa’s beauty. Regularly post high-quality photos and videos. Engage with your audience through these platforms. Respond to comments and messages promptly. This interaction builds a community around your brand.
Content marketing is another effective strategy. Write blog posts about the unique experiences available in Ubud. Share tips on local cuisine, art, and cultural events. This content positions your villa as an authority on the Ubud experience. It can attract potential guests looking for an authentic Balinese adventure.
Targeting Affluent Travelers
The key to success in the luxury market is understanding your audience. Affluent travelers seek exclusivity, privacy, and personalized experiences. Your marketing efforts should cater to these desires. Highlight aspects of your villa that offer privacy and exclusivity. This could be a secluded location or private amenities.
Develop partnerships that can help reach your target audience. Collaborate with luxury travel agencies and high-end event planners. These partnerships can increase your villa’s visibility among affluent travelers. They can also help tailor unique experiences for your guests. This approach can significantly boost your booking rates.
Personalized experiences are crucial. Offer services that cater to the specific preferences of your guests. This can include private chefs, bespoke tours, and personalized wellness programs. Highlighting these services in your marketing materials can set your villa apart. It demonstrates a commitment to providing an unmatched luxury experience.
By implementing these strategies, high-end, private villa rentals in Ubud can stand out in a competitive market. A focused approach to branding and marketing can attract the right clientele. It ensures that guests have memorable experiences. This approach can transform a beautiful property into a successful luxury rental business.

5 Creative Ways To Conquer Maths With The Best Homeschooling
Bored of teaching the same old maths lessons? Break up the routine and give your homeschool maths lessons an exciting twist with these five creative ideas. From numbers cubes to virtual tours, you’ll find something that will make your lessons fun and engaging for your students.
Creative Representations: Allow Kids To Express Their Understanding Of Numbers And Equations Through Writing, Artwork Or Music.
A great way to get kids engaged in mathematics is to go beyond the typical written formulas and equations and find creative ways to enhance and develop understanding. Let your student express their math knowledge through writing stories or journal entries, creating works of art using shapes and numbers, or writing musical pieces based on the rhythms of equations. Allow your student to experiment and explore their ideas without judgement – exploration and creation can take mathematics learning much deeper than traditional methods.
Creative Representations can help to expand a student’s understanding of mathematical concepts. Through art, music or writing, students can explore new perspectives and gain meaningful insights into equations and numbers. It is also an excellent way for them to practice both their artistic expression and their problem-solving skills, as they work out how best to develop and exhibit their newfound knowledge. Let your student explore their creative side when it comes to learning math — it might even make them more excited about maths than you expected!
Online Maths Platforms: Take Advantage Of Virtual Resources Like Online Maths Games, Tutorials And Group Activities For Kids.
Online maths platforms can provide an engaging way to learn and practice maths skills like the four operations (addition, subtraction, division and multiplication) as well as more advanced topics like algebra and trigonometry. They offer tools such as virtual calculators, interactive games and group activities which can help students gain a deeper understanding of mathematical principles without the use of complicated equipment or materials. These digital programs are time-sensitive and usually record results – similarly to their real-world counterparts – so you can use them to measure progress and keep your student on track with their studies.
With virtual maths workshops and activities, students can work collaboratively or alone in order to complete tasks such as solving equations. Online maths platforms often have interesting mindsets to let kids explore maths problems in new and creative ways. Many programs also offer tutorials which divide the process of solving a problem into multiple steps so that children don’t feel overwhelmed by the task ahead. As well as this, as mentioned — online maths platforms often monitor their user’s performance individually allowing them to identify their strengths and weaknesses better in order to progress at their own pace rather than trying to keep up with classmates or instructors. Most sites also provide virtual rewards for completing activities or goals which can keep students motivated, especially throughout the summer holidays, when extra work can feel like a drag.
Games: Make Learning Maths Fun By Incorporating Board Games That Include Numbers And Simple Equations.
Board games such as Monopoly or Snakes and Ladders are great tools to introduce concepts such as budgeting, probability, inequalities and problem-solving. As your students progress in their maths skills, more complex board games will present additional challenges to develop a deeper understanding of mathematics. Incorporating these types of game-based learning methods into your homeschool lessons can help make maths appealing and enjoyable.
For younger learners, simplified versions of popular board games can be played. These versions will contain the same concepts, with fewer rules and an easier difficulty level. For younger kids, playing games like “Chutes and Ladders” (for our US audience!) allows for the introduction of basic counting and problem-solving skills. Higher-level targeted maths topics of probability and inequalities can also be taught through classic card games such as War or Crazy Eights. Each player’s turn will involve basic arithmetic to add up their hand of cards in order to determine a winner. Have a Google to find the best maths games — both online and offline — to see which ones are most suitable for your children. With simple variations on these types of classic games, your students will learn key maths skills while having a fun time playing them!
Number Cubes: Create A Hands-On Math Lesson Using Number Cubes Or Dominoes.
The most simple and easy games to incorporate into daily study sessions are number cubes and dominoes. These are a great way to introduce your students to all sorts of math concepts. Whether it’s addition, subtraction, multiplication or division, create a fun hands-on lesson with these versatile tools. You can create math towers to show multiplication, line them up for addition and even use them for fractions. Have your students work together in teams or individually to come up with creative solutions to problems.
To make the lesson more engaging, you can use different colored cubes and put a math word like “sum” or “difference” on each cube to challenge your students. Make sure to explain how you want them to use the cubes before starting the activity and walk around during the lesson to help out when needed. As an added bonus, this activity works for any age group and is an excellent way for kids to practice their math skills in a way that feels more like play than learning.
Virtual Tours: Educational Field Trips Don’t Have To Be Physical — Explore Math-Related Places From Around The World Via Google Earth!
Exploring virtual places can be a really fun and engaging way to foster a deep understanding of mathematical principles. Try taking ‘virtual tours’ of math-related places from around the world, for example, international landmarks with powerful geometric shapes (such as the Parthenon in Athens, Stonehenge in the UK or The Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt). By using Google Earth or another similar service, your student can discover how mathematical concepts are used in architecture and design, and even explore educational quizzes related to these places. Virtual tours can be a boon to both homeschoolers and parents – satisfying learning objectives, while providing quality entertainment – an important part of homeschooling!
Once you have chosen a place to explore, challenge your student to identify the mathematical shapes present within the structure. If your student is not familiar with some specific geometric shapes, use online resources, textbooks or a handy ruler to engage in a joint exploration. You can ask questions such as “What shapes are used in the columns?”, “How many sides has that structure? etc.” Explore further details about your newfound discoveries and discuss how, why and when structures were created and how they affect our lives today. Finally, to expand your math virtual tour experience even further; consider hunting for fun educational quizzes related to these places. From Mondrian’s Mitochondria painting quiz to Saracenic Architecture quizzes — there is an endless supply of mathematical exploration ideas out there!

I have a master's degree and fifteen years of experience in my field.
In my current job I manage our program calendar, hire speakers, file permits with the town, manage event volunteers, edit our website, write a weekly newsletter, develop tours and educational programs, run some of those programs by myself, order catering, do setup and breakdown at events, write, design, print, and sometimes distribute marketing materials, do graphic design, editing, and sometimes all the writing for exhibits, graphic design everything else people ask for because I'm literally the only one in the office who knows how to use adobe suite, deal with A/V issues when I'm the only one stuck in the space with renters, sit at the front desk when we can't find anyone else to do so, sit on after hours planning meetings for things I'm not even a part of, answer the phone when the office manager isn't here, work weekends without being able to take comp time due to workload, receive lists of petty complaints from people after every event I run and complaints that I'm not doing enough, and all while not having had a boss in six months and an interim who can't rotate a PDF and has refused to cancel any of her many weeks of family vacations since we have been without leadership.
I make far more than minimum wage and it is still not enough to afford a one-room apartment in my area.
I have still been deemed unqualified by every job I have applied to.
Don't work in a museum.
If you learn one thing from reading my blog, don't work in a museum.
Why couldn't my parents have forced me into a soulless but at least well-paying job where you actually have to do what's written in your job description and no more. I'm so fucking TIRED

By Paul Tingen
From sketches to final mixes, engineer Jonathan Low spent 2020 overseeing Taylor Swift’s hit lockdown albums folklore and evermore.
“I think the theme of a lot of my work nowadays, and especially with these two records, is that everything is getting mixed all the time. I always try to get the songs to sound as finalised as they can be. Obviously that’s hard when you’re not sure yet what all the elements will be. Tracks morph all the time, and yet everything is always moving forwards towards completion in some way. Everything should sound fun and inspiring to listen to all the time.”
Speaking is Jonathan Low, and the two records he refers to are, of course, Taylor Swift’s 2020 albums folklore and evermore, both of which reached number one in the UK and the US. Swift’s main producer and co‑writer on the two albums was the National’s Aaron Dessner, also interviewed in this issue. Low is the engineer, mixer and general right‑hand man at Long Pond Studios in upstate New York, where he and Dessner spent most of 2020 working on folklore and evermore, with Swift in Los Angeles for much of the time.
“In the beginning it did not feel real,” recalls Low. “There was this brand‑new collaboration, and it was amazing how quickly Aaron made these instrumental sketches and Taylor wrote lyrics and melodies to them, which she initially sent to us as iPhone voice memos. During our nightly family dinners in lockdown, Aaron would regularly pull up his phone and say, ‘Listen to this!’ and there would be another voice memo from Taylor with this beautiful song that she had written over a sketch of Aaron’s in a matter of hours. The rate at which it was happening was mind‑blowing. There was constant elevation, inspiration and just wanting to continue the momentum.
“We put her voice memos straight into Pro Tools. They had tons of character, because of the weird phone compression and cutting midrange quality you just would not get when you put someone in front of a pristine recording chain. Plus there was all this bleed. It’s interesting how that dictates the attitude of the vocal and of the song. Even though none of the original voice memos ended up on the albums, they often gave us unexpected hints. These voice memos were such on‑a‑whim things, they were really telling. Taylor had certain phrasings and inflections that we often returned to later on. They became our reference points.”
Sketching Sessions
“The instrumental sketches Aaron makes come into being in different ways,” elaborates Low. “Sometimes they are more fleshed‑out ideas, sometimes they are less formed. But normally Aaron will set himself up in the studio, surrounded by instruments and synths, and he’ll construct a track. Once he feels it makes some kind of sense I’ll come in and take a listen and then we together develop what’s there.
“I don’t call his sketches demos, because while many instruments are added and replaced later on, most of the original parts end up in the final version of the song. We try to get the sketches to a place where they are already very engaging as instrumental tracks. Aaron and I are always obsessively listening, because we constantly want to hear things that feel inspiring and musical, not just a bed of music in the background. It takes longer to create, but in this case also gave Taylor more to latch onto, both emotionally and in terms of musical inspiration. Hearing melodies woven in the music triggered new melodies.”
Not long after Dessner and Low sent each sketch to Swift, they would receive her voice memos in return, and they’d load them into the Pro Tools session of the sketch in question. Dessner and Low then continued to develop the songs, in close collaboration with Swift. “Taylor’s voice memos often came with suggestions for how to edit the sketches: maybe throw in a bridge somewhere, shorten a section, change the chords or arrangement somewhere, and so on. Aaron would have similar ideas, and he then developed the arrangements, often with his brother Bryce, adding or replacing instruments. This happened fast, and became very interactive between us and Taylor, even though we were working remotely. When we added instruments, we were reacting to the way my rough mixes felt at the very beginning. Of course, it was also dictated by how Taylor wrote and sang to the tracks.”
Dessner supplied sketches for nine and produced 10 of folklore’s 16 songs, playing many different types of guitars, keyboards and synths as well as percusion and programmed drums. Instruments that were added later include live strings, drums, trombone, accordion, clarinet, harpsichord and more, with his brother Bryce doing many of the orchestrations. Most overdubs by other musicians were done remotely as well. Throughout, Low was keeping an overview of everything that was going on and mixing the material, so it was as presentable and inspiring as possible.
Mixing folklore
Although Dessner has called folklore an “anti‑pop album”, the world’s number‑one pop mixer Serban Ghenea was drafted in to mix seven tracks, while Low did the remainder.
“It was exciting to have Serban involved,” explains Low, “because he did things I’d never do or be able to do. The way the vocal sits always at the forefront, along with the clarity he gets in his mixes, is remarkable. A great example of this is on the song ‘epiphany’. There is so much beautiful space and the vocal feels effortlessly placed. It was really interesting to hear where he took things, because we were so close to the entire process in every way. Hearing a totally new perspective was eye‑opening and refreshing.
“Throughout the entire process we were trying to maintain the original feel. Sometimes this was hard, because that initial rawness would get lost in large arrangements and additional layering. With revisions of folklore in particular we sometimes were losing the emotional weight from earlier more casual mixes. Because I was always mixing, there was also always the danger of over‑mixing.
“We were trying to get the best of each mix version, and sometimes that meant stepping backwards, and grabbing a piano chain from an earlier mix, or going three versions back to before we added orchestration. There were definitely moments of thinking, ‘Is this going to compete sonically? Is this loud enough?’ We knew we loved the way the songs sounded as we were building them, so we stuck with what we knew. There were times where I tried to keep pushing a mix forward but it didn’t improve the song — ‘cardigan’ is an example of a song where we ended up choosing a very early mix.”
Onward & Upward
folklore was finished and released in July 2020. In a normal world everyone might have gone on to do other things, but without the option of touring, they simply continued writing songs, with Low holding the fort. In September, many of the musicians who played on the album gathered at Long Pond for the shooting of a making‑of documentary, folklore: the long pond studio sessions, which is streamed on Disney+.
The temporary presence of Swift at Long Pond changed the working methods somewhat, as she could work with Dessner in the room, and Low was able record her vocals. After Swift left again, sessions continued until December, when evermore was released, with Dessner producing or co‑producing all tracks, apart from ‘gold rush’ which was co‑written and co‑produced by Swift and Antonoff. Low recorded many of Swift’s vocals for evermore, and mixed the entire album. The lead single ‘willow’ became the biggest hit from the album, reaching number one in the US and number three in the UK.
“Before Taylor came to Long Pond,” remembers Low, “she had always recorded her vocals for folklore remotely in Los Angeles or Nashville. When I recorded, I used a modern Telefunken U47, which is our go‑to vocal mic — we record all the National stuff with that — going straight into the Siemens desk, and then into a Lisson Grove AR‑1 tube compressor, and via a Burl A‑D converter into Pro Tools. Taylor creates and lays down her vocal arrangements very quickly, and it sounds like a finished record in very few takes.”
Devils In The Detail
In his mixes, Low wanted listeners to share his own initial response to these vocal performances. “The element that draws me in is always Taylor’s vocals. The first time I received files with her properly recorded but premixed vocals I was just floored. They sounded great, even with minimal EQ and compression. They were not the way I’m used to hearing her voice in her pop songs, with the vocal soaring and sitting at the very front edge of the soundscape. In these raw performances, I heard so much more intimacy and interaction with the music. It was wonderful to hear her voice with tons of detail and nuances in place: her phrasing, her tonality, her pitch, all very deliberate. We wanted to maintain that. It’s more emotional, and it sounds so much more personal to me. Then there was the music...”
The arrangements on evermore are even more ‘chamber pop’ than on folklore, with instruments like glockenspiel, crotales, flute, French horn, celeste and harmonium in evidence. “As listeners of the National may know, Aaron’s and Bryce’s arrangements can be quite dense. They love lush orchestration, all sorts of percusion, synths and other electronic sounds. The challenge was trying to get them to speak, without getting in the way of the vocals. I want a casual listener to be drawn in by the vocal, but sense that something special is happening in the music as well. At the same time, someone who really is digging in can fully immerse themselves and take in all the beauty deeper in the details of the sound and arrangement. Finding the balance between presenting all the musical elements that were happening in the arrangement and this really beautiful, upfront, real‑sounding vocal was the ticket.
“A particular challenge is that a lot of the detail that Aaron gravitates towards happens in the low mids, which is a very warm part of our hearing spectrum that can quickly become too muddy or too woolly. A lot of the tonal and musical information lives in the low mids, and then the vocal sits more in the midrange and high mids. There’s not too much in the higher frequency range, except the top of the guitars, and some elements like a shaker and the higher buzzy parts of the synths. Maintaining clarity and separation in those often complex arrangements was a major challenge.”
