when I tell people I coach competitive climbing they often ask how it's scored and their assumption generally is that it's whoever gets to the top of the wall first and there is a kind of climbing called speed climbing that does work like that but that's a fairly minor subsection of climbing which essentially exists only for competition and most climbers like never participate in it.

in most types of climbing, when a comp is scored it's literally about who finishes the most routes. and the thing that's so interesting to me about the speed question is that it assumes that everyone is getting to the top of everything, which is never the case. it's more common that a climber doesn't finish a single problem in a comp than that they send everything.

and I've been thinking about that a lot recently bc in climbing there is no guarantee or even assumption that you'll finish a route. outside of competitions people spend weeks and — on problems outside — literal years working on one singular problem until they can do it. the question climbing asks an athlete isn't "how well can you do this?" but "are you capable of doing this at all?" and the thing is that if you stick with it, it can teach you amazing things about perseverance when you know you're getting your ass kicked in the short term and pushing yourself past what you thought you were capable of and problem solving (under a time limit and in three dimensions) and body awareness and trusting yourself and being brave. and to stick with climbing is either to learn those things or for it to just eat you alive.
